If you are here after being bit and looking for help quickly here are my tips: GET THEM OFF YOU!! Hognoses will latch on and keep chewing on you if they think you are food. I have read other people say that pushing up on their little noses (almost like pulling on a soda can tab) will do the trick. But it is very important to get them off quickly, because the more they chew the more venom you will get and the worse your reaction will be. Clean the area of the bite! Apply a WARM compress. I used a wash cloth soaked in warm water. Do not use cold water or an ice pack. You will probably not need to go to the emergency room. I saw a lot of people online say this, and after my experience I agree with them. Of course you should go if you are worried, but in my case and a lot of other people’s cases, it was just a waste of time and money as there is not really anything they can do for you. So here is the full story. Back on March 10th, 2025, I was bit by my hungry hognose, and was being way too careful about getting him off me. All my other snakes are constrictors, meaning on the rare occasion they have bitten me thinking I was food, they would eventually let go if I waited it out. But Hamlet (my hognose) just kept chewing and chewing into me. I tried running water over his face, gently tugging him off, etc. I was worried about hurting him, and so he chewed on me for probably a solid two minutes before I was more forceful in getting him off (this was before I knew about the soda tab method). After he was off, I began cleaning the area (my sister insisted I put liquid bandage on the wound, which is why it looks like that in the pictures. I do not recommend doing this as it was very itchy and annoying) and my thumb immediately began swelling up, then the swelling just kept spreading to the rest of my hand and fingers. This part was pretty painful, and the severity of it was making me freak out a bit. With my hands no longer preoccupied with getting Hamlet off, I started looking up online what to do for a hognose bite. People talked about “light swelling,” “some numbness,” and warned against going to the emergency room. I think I only saw one or two pictures of people’s swollen bite areas. This was making me freak out more, because my swelling seemed WAY worse than what I was seeing anyone else talk about. I was also surprised by how painful it was, the skin on my hand was turning white in places from being stretched out so much so quickly. And the swelling just kept spreading, it had started going down my wrist and forearm. In the pictures you can see what I called the “lump of swelling” where it is traveling down my forearm. You can also see the ice pack that I initially got to help. In normal situations, swelling = cold/ice pack to help the swelling go down. But in this case, the swelling isn’t “normal” swelling, you are going to swell no matter what. So having cold against your skin will “shrink” it and will just make the swelling hurt more. Online I finally found people recommending heat instead. I soaked a wash cloth with warm water and the relief was instant. I didn’t take many pictures after this because I was busy keeping a warm towel on my hand to stop the pain of the swelling, but the swelling kept traveling down my arm. I must have had a very bad reaction, or let Hamlet bite me for too long, because I could not find anyone else online who seemed to have swelling as bad as me. Oh and also, my whole hand was either numb or tingly. My thumb, where I was bit, was completely numb. The swelling kept going past my elbow and eventually stopped on my upper arm a few inches away from my armpit. The next morning, my arm was so swollen I couldn’t physically bend my elbow or any of my fingers. I called out of work (my coworkers were very surprised by the reason lol). My family was of course very worried and urged me to go to the emergency room, but after what I read online about how futile that was I told them I would only go if things got worse. For the next day or two my arm pretty much stayed the same, the swelling might have even gone down a little bit. But then on the third day I started to develop a rash. Now, you could barely see this rash at first, but it was very painful. Anything that touched my skin, even just a gentle brush of fabric, felt like sharp needles. So, I (regretfully) decided to go to an urgent care. This was kind of funny but also kind of not, but the person who saw me at the urgent care literally couldn’t spell the word “snake.” I saw them type it out incorrectly on their monitor twice before asking me, saying it had been a while since they’ve needed to spell that word. They of course couldn’t do anything for me, and told me to go to the emergency room. I went, explained to the people there that I was bit by a hognose snake, which is technically venomous, but it was my own pet snake and the venom isn’t lethal to humans. There were a lot of people waiting, and I thought I was going to be there for ages, but I was immediately taken back to a room. I think they heard “snake bite” and thought the situation was much more dire than it actually was and gave me priority treatment, which made me feel a bit guilty due to all the other people in there who had probably already been waiting a while. They tested my blood for an infection, did an EKG to make sure the swelling hadn’t reached my heart, and then did X-rays on my arm. After all that, a doctor finally comes in to my room just to tell me “It would seem that you definitely got an envenomated bite.” I guess I looked surprised, because he started explaining to me “you see, sometimes when a snake bites you they don’t use any venom” blah blah. But I was just surprised because, duh? OBVIOUSLY I got a bite with venom?? My whole entire arm is swollen and I cant move my fingers? Of course the average doctor isn’t going to know all about different snake species, so I shouldn’t have been surprised I knew more about them than he did. I started explaining to him how hognose snakes work, that the venom isn’t in their fangs rather their saliva, but realized he will probably never need to know this again and he also didn’t look like he cared lol. Basically I paid over $4,000 to find out I got an envenomated bite, from a venomous snake. I guess it was also a relief to find out my heart was unaffected and I didn’t have an infection, although they sent me home with antibiotics anyways. It did also help my family to stop worrying about me. Over the next several days, the swelling went down and the rash developed more. Luckily, even though the rash began to LOOK much worse, it was really only painful the first two days when you could barely see it. Most of the pictures I have included are of this rash, it was the weirdest rash I have ever seen. It had the appearance and texture of those weird bubble head goldfish who look like you can see their brains. The red dots that would appear in the rash were apparently blood vessels bursting because the skin membrane was so thin, according to my coworker’s nurse boyfriend. The swelling I think took one week to fully go away, and the rash took over two months to fully disappear. The last arm picture is what my arm looks like right now, in late December, 9 months after the bite. In the right lighting, I can sometimes see the very outline of where the rash was, my skin just barely has a different color and texture. I almost wish I had a cool scar or something people could ask me about haha, but you really cannot tell anything happened at all. The only lasting effect from this incident is that part of my thumb is still numb. When Hamlet was chewing on me, there was a moment when he bit down and I felt what I can only describe as a bolt of numbness shoot up my thumb. Like he got me right in the tendon or something. My thumb went immediately numb when this happened, and that was also the moment I kind of freaked out and decided I needed to stop being so gentle and get him off me. Most of my whole hand was numb for a couple days after the bite. Unfortunately, I never regained full feeling back, although the numbness is only in a small section of my thumb and not the whole thing. I included a picture where I tried to draw a circle representing the area that is numb on the side of my thumb. So it could have been a lot worse. And of course, I still love Hamlet. This was the first and only time he has ever bitten me to date, he is a little bit stupid but a really cute guy and usually everyone’s favorite out of my snakes. Male, 6ft 150lbs in the US. I have an awkward clean cut on my finger that just won't stay closed. It doesn't bleed but is painful. I tried NuSkin liquid bandage, but it doesn't stick very well and comes off after and movement of my finger. I do a lot of work with my fingers. I was wondering if anyone has tried using NuSkin liquid bandage for attaching their grafts. This may help someone. I went from bag changes ever 12 hrs to every 3 days. August 2 will be my 1 month mark from getting Patricia (stoma) i had such horrible skin because of leaks and once i started using the cement paired with liquid skin it finally cleared up. The liquid skin does sting. My routine is this. Put powder remove excess then put liquid skin. Let dry then add Nu Hope to skin and a small amount where ring will sit then wait 4-5 min. While waiting for the skin to become tacky i cut my bag and stretch my ring. I put paste in the divets, put ring on skin because nu hope will make it cling to the skin, then put flange push and throw on a bag. Warm water and mild soap will get extra residue off just try not to wet flange. I actually leave it. It dries up after a while. Make sure to use gloves. This stuff gets everywhere. My whole problem with leaks was i could not get the ring to stay on with weepy skin no matter what. But with the liquid skin and nu hope it had been way better. Misty Lake, the largest pool of water in Gensokyo. Known to produce a strange mist around noon of each and every day, shrouding the waters and the sight of any who approached. Despite this, it was popular among anglers and fishermen who go there to hook the large catches, for they sell well and taste delicious when prepared properly. Such as what two people decided to do that morning before the mist came, one a priestess donning red robes, red hair and horns on head, the other a priest in white and blue robes and glowing red eyes. They brought fishing rods and bait hoping to catch a monstrous beast of aquatic life, one large enough to feed a person for weeks. However all they got were little fish that couldn’t even feed a child for a day. “Another small one…” The priestess named Shin said. She released it into the bucket next to her; which was already half full of small fish, before reeling the line out again back into the cold waters. “I don’t get it. Kasen knew what she was thinking and spoke up about it. “Hey, I know what you’re feeling, but it’s okay.” Kasen patted Reimu on the back and showed her a little smile of assurance. “We’ll try again tomorrow.” Reimu smiled back, though her expression didn’t match her eyes which remained doubtful. She got up on her own feet afterwards and went over to Marisa and Alice to talk and play. Behind, Genjii approached Kasen with a different feeling in mind regarding Reimu. “I know what you’re thinking also, Genjii.” Kasen was aware of what Genjii was going to say. She turned around to face the grumpy old turtle with a more serious look. “But it takes time to learn, Reimu just needs a little more-” “It’s been two years, Kasen.” Genjii interrupted her. “Gensokyo needs a Shrine Maiden. Youkai attacks have already been rising in numbers and both Yukari and Okina are getting impatient with the lack of progress. We can only wait for so long before it becomes clear if she’s ready or not to truly take the mantle.” “I know, I know…” Kasen said. “But Reimu is ready. She’s resolved incidents before, even without her powers manifesting completely.” “But what good is a Shrine Maiden that can’t fly? Answer me Kasen.” Genjii said with a gruff voice. Kasen however did not, knowing the answer to that question. She turned away and was about to go to Reimu and the others when Genjii spoke again. “I understand you care for my lady. We all do. She’s important to us as she’s important to Gensokyo. But don’t let your personal feelings get in the way of your duties as a Sage of Gensokyo.” Kasen listened, but again did not say anything. Her bandaged arm tightened with her grip before letting go, walking over to Reimu. — The Vengeful Spirit Mima flew over Gensokyo, gazing down in deep thought. Thoughts of plans on how to take over the world popped into her head as always, yet most of the plans she conjured were either too complex or not her style. Those thoughts were always frequent in her head, but lately they have been replaced with thoughts of Marisa; how she’s been, what she would like to eat for dinner, how her training in magic is going, and so forth. She winced at the thoughts clouding her mind. She didn’t enjoy having her headspace filled with Marisa when she could be thinking about wiping out humanity. Did she grow soft? “What is going on with me?” Mima thought. She looked down again, noticing something happening over by Misty Lake. She flew downward to inspect. People have gathered around a tomb, many of whom pulled and tugged at the front entrance which remained sealed shut. Shin and Gyoku were among the people trying to pry it out, but there was also Rika, Ellen, Orange, Kana, Kurumi, and several other youkai and fairies. Rika tried to help, strapping the tomb’s door to her flower tank hoping the force of pull would do the trick. “This won’t budge!” Shin shouted with her teeth gritting while gripping against the gate. “Are you sure your flower thing will work!?” Gyoku said in a similar pose to Shin. “Certain. Now let this baby drive!” Rika drove the tank forward. The ropes attached straightened upon reaching their max length, only to snap like rubber bands in defeat. “Darn it…” Rika looked back at everyone else, then an idea popped up. “Want me to shoot it down?” She turned the tank’s gun around towards the tomb. “No!!!” Shin and Gyoku said at the same time. “What if you destroy whatever loot’s inside!?” “Well do you have any better ideas cause I got none.” Rika slouched in disappointment. Mima flew down, which caught everyone’s attention, for they all were familiar with her; whether it be as acquaintances or former foes. “M-Mima?” Shin said, letting go of the tomb entrance momentarily. “What are you doing here?” “I noticed you all down here at the lake so I came to check what you were up to. What is this?” Mima faced the tomb. “We’re not sure. It rose up from the waters about an hour ago. We figured that someone’s fortune might be inside so we’ve been trying to open it up.” Gyoku said. “But the entrance won’t open no matter what we do.” Mima inspected the tomb’s exterior, moving around it to get an idea of what it was. She recognized its design to be of European descent. But how could such a thing be in a land like Gensokyo? Then again Gensokyo wasn’t a stranger to the unexpected. “Have you tried finding another way in?” Mima asked. “No, we checked all around but there’s no windows or chimneys, let alone a hole for light to enter.” Shin said. “And we don’t want to try breaking the tomb out of risk of destroying whatever may be inside.” “What about phasing through the wall?” Mima suggested. “You, the one in a maid uniform, you’re a poltergeist right? Can’t you phase through and enter?” She asked Kana. Kana acted shy suddenly, unsure what to say or respond with. “A-Ah…Well while I can make objects move around, phasing isn’t one of my specialties. You’re thinking of ghosts, totally different.” “There’s a difference?” Thought the Vengeful Spirit. She begrudgingly realized the task fell to her to investigate. Well not that it mattered since she was in the vicinity anyways and had nothing else planned. “Oh forget it, I’ll go by myself.” She pushed her arms in through the wall, feeling a sudden force pushing her back. It wasn’t strong enough to keep her out, but did make her think about who or what made it that way as if knowing someone would try to break in. Regardless she pushed even harder until getting her body inside. “I’m in. Whatever tried to keep me out wasn’t strong enough to- Eugh! What’s that smell!?” Mima plugged her nose, a strong scent wafted in the air; a mixture of garlic and flowers, nearly suffocating. It was impossible to see with the scarcity of light, and the smell made it hard to think normally. She had to fix both problems straight away. She casted a magic circle on the ground, glowing as it began to suck up the smell while Mima also casted an orb to light up the inside. “There we go… Jeez, why would a tomb have that kind of smell?” Mima asked herself as she looked around before laying eyes on a coffin by the end of the room. It was a simple coffin, crafted with old wood and shaped with six sides with a large golden cross flat on top. Something about it was ominous to Mima, giving her the feeling she shouldn’t try to mess with it any further. “Maybe I shouldn’t stay here. I’ll just tell them there’s nothing inside-” Mima went to phase back through the wall, only to fail when her hands pressed on the cold stone surface without going through. “What the?” Mima continued to try and escape, but she was stuck inside. She grew impatient and aimed her staff to blast it down. “I’m not letting myself get sealed again!” She exclaimed while firing a bullet of light. Instead of destroying the wall it bounced off, ricocheting all over inside the tomb as Mima ducked for cover, till it hit the coffin, destroying the lid. “Okay…” Mima got up, a little shocked. “Bullets don’t work here, now I know. Maybe I can find a way to get the people outside to get me out, assuming they haven’t abandoned me already.” Mima thought of possible solutions, oblivious to the shifting of the coffin lid as a bone-like hand pushed it off until dropping to the ground, getting her attention. A figure rose up from the coffin, looking undead in appearance. Something about it caught her eye, particularly the pointed ears, pale skin and fanged teeth. “T-They’re alive?” Mima thought as she moved backwards carefully. Then she noticed candles in the room lighting up on their own, sounds of an organ playing a classical song, and the figure from the coffin changing to a more human look. Clothes of dark magic manifested around him, a suit and a black cloak most particular. Sleek black hair grew on top of his head while his face changed from grotesque to charming. “Ah, a fost un pui de somn lung pe care l-am avut.” The man said followed by a yawn. The language he spoke was unfamiliar to Mima, but she could’ve sworn she heard it before from someone else. “Who is he?” Mima remained silent, weary of the man’s next act. Suddenly he turned his head towards Mima, with eyes that glowed scarlet red. She jumped with fear stinging her, raising her staff again in defense. “Oh? Nu mă așteptam la un oaspete la ora asta. Mima herself was taller than most girls in Gensokyo, but the man was a tower in comparison. She was intimidated and confused by his appearance and speaking. “S-Stay back. I don’t care who you are.” Mima said in defense. The man looked at her, not understanding what she said. “Îmi pare rău, mă tem că nu am prins asta. Iată, stai nemișcat o clipă.” He reached towards Mima’s face, placing his hand on her cheek before gazing deep in her eyes. Mima knew she should’ve looked away, or the very least slapped his hand, but she couldn’t, she was already entranced. She continued to stare until her eyes matched his, changing from green to red. “There we go.” The man spoke in fluent Japanese. “Forgive me if you didn’t understand what I was saying before, it’s been a while since I last spoke to anyone, especially a sweet and beautiful lady as yourself.” Mima blushed, still looking at the man’s eyes but now with passion. Something about him made her heart swoon, her mind melt, her spirit yearning for more. “You think I’m beautiful?” Mima asked. “Of course.” The man said. “Oh, forgive me again, I forgot to introduce myself…My name is Count Dracula.” He stepped back and gave a gentleman's bow. “Would you tell me where I am?” “You’re in a land called Gensokyo, a region in Japan isolated from the Outside World where those who have been forgotten come to.” Mima answered without hesitation or stutter. “Gensokyo? Japan?” Dracula was more intrigued. “Quite a long way from Transylvania. I wonder how I have ended up here? Well, it doesn't matter. You freed me from my eternal sleep, perhaps I should give a reward.” “Reward me?” Mima’s mind grew anticipated, wondering what kind of reward she might get. “Yes…One for both you and me.” He moved closer to Mima, tilting her head to the side to expose her neck and bite down on it. Mima let out a noise of pain, yet she didn’t freak out nor try to push him off while he fed. But he stopped when he realized the taste wasn’t blood, it was more like a liquid gel that was awful. He pulled away, pushing Mima off as he hissed in disgust. “You’re bloodless! How is that even possible, you foul woman!?” Dracula said in a way that contrasted his tone a minute ago. “A-Ah! I’m sorry! I’m not really human you see, I’m a vengeful spirit.” Mima said in an apologetic manner. “Vengeful Spirit?” Dracula stared with bewilderment, but soon went back to a calmer state. “Ah, forgive me then, I didn’t know. I’m sorry if I hurt you.” Mima blushed again, feeling more swooned by his words. “No, it’s okay. I’m sorry I couldn’t satisfy you.” Dracula looked around his tomb, noticing there weren’t any cracks or holes, let alone a way out. He could tell whoever made this wanted to keep him in. “Are you able to get us out?” Dracula asked Mima. “I want to. But I can’t phase out the way I came in.” Mima said, which made Dracula disappointed. “Oh, no matter. I’ll handle this myself.” Dracula walked over to where the gate blocking the entrance was, placing his hand on it. On the other side of the gate, everyone else was lying around in boredom, waiting for Mima to come out, but she was talking longer than expected. It was already nearing noon so the mist of misty lake started to reappear. There was thought of leaving but no one has yet left. “So…How are we going to split the money?” Rika asked, resulting in gazes from Shin and Gyoku. “Eh? What do you mean split the money? We found the tomb first.” Shin said. “Eh? Are you joking? I assisted you when you tried to pry off the door with my tank. Do you have any idea how much fuel I used up getting here? It’s not cheap, I'll tell you that.” “And even with your tank you were no help to us.” Gyoku said. “And the rest of you didn’t help either. Therefore the money should go to me.” “Yeah, it should- wait.” Shin looked at Gyoku. “I thought we were gonna split it.” Everyone stared at Gyoku while he tried to make an excuse for his statement. But it wasn’t needed, as moments later the door behind him launched out of the tomb like a cannonball, hurtling away and crashing to the ground. Everyone else was shocked by the sudden act. “Are you okay!?” Shin asked Gyoku. The priest gave a shaky thumbs up while the gate crushed him. The others looked into the tomb, seeing Mima come out alright. “Mima, what happened there?” Orange asked, noticing her eyes were different now, and she had an expression of obedience. The answer for that came in the other figure who walked out of the tomb, startling Orange. “Ah! Who is that!?” She raised her staff in defense. Dracula looked around at the various figures who stood before him. He could tell that not all of them were human, especially Kurumi, who had a gaze bigger than anyone else as she recognized him. “I…I know you.” Kurumi pointed at Dracula. “You’re him…The man from the stories.” “Wait, you know this person?” Kana asked. “I’m surprised to meet a fellow vampire here.” Dracula moved closer to Kurumi to get a better look at her. She was in awe of him, the smile he gave alone gave her butterflies in her stomach. He then looked at Rika. Unlike the others it was clear she was an ordinary human. He licked his lips with a thirst that needed to be quenched. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Rika asked, feeling his glare. Right then, at an eye-blurring speed he moved towards her and bit down on her neck, sucking up her blood. She screamed in pain, not understanding what was going on. She tried to pry him off but his strength was strong, his grip impeccable. The others watched as the color of her skin turned pale. Dracula then let go of her once he was satisfied, Rika fainted from blood loss soon after. “Rika!!!” Orange ran over to Rika to make sure she was okay. Fortunately she wasn’t dead, but the amount of blood drained from her body could’ve been fatal if he’d kept going. “Forgive me, I hadn’t eaten in such a long time, and she was the nearest source of food.” Dracula said. Orange, furious at his explanation, turned back around to attack. She swung her staff towards him with anger, but he caught it with his hand, using his other hand to force her to gaze into his eyes, hypnotizing her to become obedient. “Ah…I’m sorry my lord.” Orange fell to her knees and bowed. “I acted irrational there.” The others didn’t know what he did, only that he was a threat to their lives if left unchecked. Kana, Ellen, Shin and Gyoku all rushed towards him to attack, yet before they could lay a finger Mima casted a barrier spell, trapping them all within. They banged on the transparent walls, but couldn’t get out. “I’m sorry dear, most people in Gensokyo are erratic with no common sense.” Mima said. “It’s alright. I had my fair share of encounters with beings who never appreciated my presence.” Dracula said, looking around at the mist that completely covered up the lake, the many youkai and fairies who were a distance away, and also Kurumi who didn’t do anything except continued to stare. “You. What is your name?” Dracula asked. “It’s Kurumi.” She answered. “What do you know of Gensokyo? Is it peaceful? Are there other humans?” Kurumi nodded her head yes. “It’s very peaceful. It’s been peaceful for a long time actually, ever since we’ve been sealed off from the outside world. We’re not allowed to attack humans because of the fear of drawing the attention of the Sages.” “The sages?” Dracula asked. “Sages of Gensokyo.” Kurumi said. “Their job is to keep up the barrier that traps us in, locking us away in a region they claim to be a safe haven for youkai. But in reality it’s nothing more than hell for anyone who isn’t born a human. The ones born at the village especially get all the protection they want. They live in peace, prosperity, while the rest of us die from hunger or being hunted down.” Dracula felt sympathy hearing that. He looked at the humans trapped in the cage, then back towards everyone else. “Hm…So in the end, humans are once again the problem…Very well.” Dracula jumped up and landed on top of the tomb beside the cross, speaking up to gather everyone’s attention. “Attention everyone. I, Count Dracula, will change this oppressed system you all suffer from. To punish the humans who consider themselves superior from all other races. To help give everyone the sustenance they need. I won’t force you to join me, but I will ask if you’re willing to do whatever it takes to give everyone here in Gensokyo the respect they deserve. Will you join me?” Commotion rose from the audience. They weren’t sure about what he said, which made him disappointed, if not a little angry. So he tried again, with more dazzle. Using a bit of magic he conjured a large black bat with bright red eyes and sharp fangs, so big it blocked the light of the sun that pierced through the trees and mist. “I SAID, WILL YOU JOIN ME!?” Dracula said. The youkai and fairies were impressed by the magic, so much they cheered, chanting yes over and over all entranced by his power, including Kana, Shin, and Gyoku. Kurumi remained in shock, knowing the stories she read about him are indeed true. Dracula smiled with menace in his eyes. I tried something today out of curiosity and desperation (heavy on desperation) which was putting that Nu Skin Liquid Bandage on my nails to see if it would kind of even out the gap or hide any rough spots. It actually works pretty decently so it got me wondering if there’s something like it that may be in gel form or something. Any ideas or has anyone used anything like this? The liquid bandage is kinda glossy so I’m not a fan of that. I’m a 43yr old dad of two girls and one is starting to pick her nails like me. I’m afraid I set that example and am so worried it’ll be a horrible habit for her too. Just put a medium sized flap into my big right toe at work smh. I'm goofy. Maybe size of ur thumbnail on the medial/bottom side, clean but hinged like a little door. Anyways nice fun size south swell just got here this morning. Anyone ever have success putting nu skin inside the wound? Squirt glue in between the flap and the foot meat squeeze together like pbj sandwich then putting a bandaid over the whole thing to contain? is the dried adhesive too rigid inside the flesh? The three of you walk down the corridor, back towards the catwalk above the PlayPen. Well, two of you walk, Rose limps grimly, trying to find a gait that will lessen the swelling pain she is experiencing beneath her skirt. She sniffles frequently, clearly trying to withold the tears flowing freely down her cheeks, you can see a trail of blood, tracing down her leg from under her skirt. When the three of you are roughly halfway, Miss Frankie turns to her sharply, she grabs her right shoulder with one hand and turns her to her, cuppping her reddened cheek with the other. "I'm sorry, okay?" Miss Frankie apologises to her. "She made me do it." "It was my fault, I shouldn't have spilled the Coffee." Rose sniffles, her voice breaking, any attempt to conceal her emotions crumbling. "No! I made you spill that crap! I shouldn't have hit you! I should've stood up to her!" Miss Frankie insists, desperately trying to break through Rose's sense of inferiority. Miss Frankie wipes the tear lines from Rose's cheeks, she holds her demure face in her hands for a moment and looks at her, her own face furrowed with worry, then she kisses her on the forehead and pulls her frail frame into a hug. "Please don't hate me Rosie..." Miss Frankie whispers as she holds Rose. Rose sniffles, her hands slowly, uncertainly rise to Miss Frankie's waist and she returns the embrace. They both stand there holding eachother, in a silence occasionally broken only by a sharp intake of breath. You feel a deep, dark loathing birth itself within you, not half an hour ago you were happy, but more importantly Miss Frankie was happy, and that 'Ma'am'... that Munstah behind the doors took it all away. You swear you hear the doors click again. "Stud? Are you okay?" Miss Frankie asks, looking at you, still holding Rose. You rub your aching tummeh, the pain lingers, but for the most part has numbed. "Am otay Miss Fwankie, Stud nu huwt." You reply, trying to sound chipper and failing miserably. You lock eyes with Rose, and feel that same, mystifying sensation. "Am... sowwy... Miss Wose..." You apologise. "Meanie Ma'am towd Stud tu do wha Stud do..." "It's alright... she would have hurt you if you didn't..." Rose tells you, understanding in her voice. You feel a pang of guilt, yes it's true you were told to attack her, but the eagerness, the enthusiasm you had felt as you had rushed up to her, the thought of tearing out her throat in your mind... You follow as Miss Frankie carries Rose down the remainder of the corridor, she stops at the edge of the catwalk, furtively surveying the PlayPen below. The FC 404 are too busy with their fun to notice the three of you above and you sneak along the catwalk unseen, to a door at the end. Miss Frankie pushes the handle down with her elbow and pushes the door open with her backside, you dip through as she holds it open for you then she lets it go and it slams shut. A spiral staircase waits on the other side and the three of you descend in the dim light. Before long you come to another door, Miss Frankie beats a fist on it. BANG! BANG! BANG! "Doc!? Open up!" Miss Frankie shouts. You wait for a response. Miss Frankie kicks the doors. BANG! BANG! "Young Frankie?" The muffled voice of Doctor Bendall inquires from the other side. "This is most unorthodox, you know that personell are supposed to enter from the PlayPen..." "OPEN UP!" Miss Frankie bellows, launching a kick into the door. BANG! You hear locks and chains being undone on the other side of the door, then the door creaks open a crack. The familiar, masked face of Doctor Bendall peeks out. "Oh no... what has that awful woman done to her now?" Doctor Bendall asks. Miss Frankie shoulders her way into the Vet's clinic, the Doctor stumbles back, almost knocked over. "P-Please, wash your hands." He stammers. "Forget that for one moment for god's sake!" Miss Frankie snaps. Placing Rose onto the table, she lies there unresponsively, curled up in a foetal position. You hesistate at the door, remembering the torment you had endured in this place before. Then, resolutely you march in after your master. "Oh my goodness..." The Doctor gasps as he pulls aside Rose's skirt. The wound of Miss Frankie's final strike has blossomed into an enormous bruise, you can see glistening seprations in the skin, pulled apart by the underlying swelling. "That Woman... Doctor Bendall tuts. "Doesn't she care about anything?" "It... wasn't her..." Miss Frankie admits. "She made me-" "Say no more." Doctor Bendall cuts her off, raising a hand, a clear look of disgust on his face, despite his mask. "That witch..." He puts the back of his hand onto Rose's cheek, almost paternally. The Doctor goes to his cupboards, rummaging around briefly until he finds what he needs. Miss Frankie kneels down to be face to face with Rose. She holds her hand as the Doctor works. Rose squeezes Miss Frankie's hand whenever she winces in pain. You watch in wonderment. Hoomins can be...kind you realise. Not the in the simple sense of a reward with a treat that you have come to know. Genuine, selfless compassion... love. Doctor Bendall finishes cleaning the wound, he then administers some strange-smelling white paste to the injury and finally covers it with an adhesive bandage. "Best you rest a while my Dear..." The doctor says gloomily, picking up a mask, a hose connecting it to a canister. Rose nods and allows Doctor Bendall to place the mask over her mouth and nose... almost eagerly. Her eyes droop as the gas takes ahold and soon she is asleep. Doctor Bendall folds a towel and gently rests her head on it. "Dream of a better place..." Doctor Bendall whispers as he turns off the gas. You all stand in silence, listening to Rose's breathing. "Young Frankie... you can freshen up in my personal quarter... you look positively frazzled..." He offers. Miss Frankie nods and stands up, she strokes Rose's cheek, then walks though an open doorway without a word. You go to follow her, but curiosity overwhelms you and instead you look at Doctor Bendall, thinking of how to ask the question. Doctor Bendall sighs deeply, then goes to a sink and washes his hands. "Doctow?" you venture. "Yes Stud? Do you need a checkup?" He replies, drying his hands. "Nu... Stud nu have any owwies, jus wan knu..." "Want to know what?" He asks, looking at his reflection. Your mind fit to burst with this newfound knowledge. "Don't mention any of this to Young Frankie, Stud. I've brought her more than enough suffering already..." Doctor Bendall requests. He turns on the tap and washes his hands. Again. After some time, Miss Frankie comes back in, she looks as though she has been crying again. You walk up to her, wagging your tail lightly. She smiles sadly down at you. "Let's go Stud, we've got work to do." She says, heading for the door. "Thanks Doc..." She mutters, then gives one more longing glance at the ghost lying on the table. "Tank ou' Doctah..." You add as you walk out to the PlayPen. Miss Frankie lets the door go and the two of you walk out together. Things have wound down in the PlayPen, the captive Fluffies have been wiped out and are now being... gathered up. Miss Frankie leans against the wall next to the door, she half raises a hand to wave at a couple of FC personell as they pass her, dragging a bloody bag behind them. Here and there, ModiFluffs feast on the spoils, tearing strips of flesh from strewn carcasses and slurping them down happily. "Stud..." Miss Frankie sighs. "Do you want to stay with me?" she asks. "I'll understand if you don't, someone else here will surely take you if you want to go." You look to her, she looks at you, sad and tired. You think for a moment. April 19, 1988 Well, pizdec. Things didn’t go as planned (shocking, I know) but at least only a few people died this time. When the doors slid open and I stumbled into the ground floor lobby, I was relieved to see the guards behind the glass alive and well. That relief quickly melted when I saw not-Maksim slip out of the control room into the lobby, turned away from me. “You know what to do. I expect to have access to the cells I specified by the time I get down there.” he called over his shoulder. He turned, almost bumping into me, and froze, eyes wide in shock. I started to yell for help, but fell short when I felt a pistol being jammed into my stomach. “You’re a persistent one, aren’t you?” he whispered. He yanked my gun off my shoulder and kicked it out of reach. “Everything alright back there?” one of the guards called. “Yeah, carry on.” he yelled back, not taking his gaze off of me. “Turn around, back to the elevator. You know what’ll happen if you don’t.” his eyes glittered malevolently. I obeyed, cursing myself for not bringing my gun to bear in time. As we reached the doors, I faked a groan of pain and stumbled. Not-Maksim snarled in frustration and yanked me upright. “Shut up and get mov-” I twisted and headbutted him as hard as I could. His head snapped back and a strand of black blood dribbled from the corner of his mouth. While he was disoriented, I yanked a knife from my boot and slashed at his wrist. He bit down on a scream of pain and dropped the pistol. “ALERT-” not-Maksim wrapped his good hand around my throat and cut me off, but the damage was done. A pair of guards charged out of the control room. One look at the blood on not-Maksim’s chin was all they needed. “Pyatro! Carman! Get on the radio and sound the alarm! It’s the shapeshifter!” one hollered. “I don’t have time for this.” not-Maksim snarled. The guards opened fire. I dove out of the way as he charged them with unnatural speed. The volley that slammed him would have killed any normal man. But then again, he wasn’t normal or a man. Not-Maksim stopped becoming less of a he and more of an it as it started to change. Bullets zipped over my head as I crawled for my gun. I heard the guards in the control room shouting something about the radio, but it was drowned out by the gunfire and gruesome crackling and popping noises from the shapeshifter. The gunfire died down just as I reached my weapon. When I got to my feet, I honestly expected some sort of skinny, pale humanoid, like a bigger version of a Crawler. What I saw instead was a barrel chested, inky black beast with tree trunk legs, a misshapen lump where a head should be, and a pair of mismatched arms. One one side was a huge, overly muscular arm that tapered to a wickedly sharp spike. The other arm was just as long, but it looked withered and deformed, almost like it was crippled. This one ended in a six-fingered claw, with two thumbs - one on each side. While I was taking all this in, It reared back and impaled the first guard against that wall with its spike arm. He cried out and struggled for a few seconds before going limp. The second guard backed away, fumbling for a fresh magazine. It pressed its claw against a gash in its side and got ready to flick it at the guard. Something, clicked, and I remembered how the blood had reacted with the metal catwalk earlier. “Watch out! Don’t let that stuff get on your skin!” I warned. Too late. Oily droplets splattered all over the guard’s face. He howled in pain, dropped his rifle and started clawing at his eyes. I poured bullets into its back, but it didn’t even flinch. It yanked its spike out of the first guard, who left a bloody streak on the wall as he slid to the floor. Blood and guts leaked out of the ragged hole in his chest. As I reloaded, I caught sight of a vault door off to the side. It was open just wide enough for me to see a guard hunched over a control panel with a frustrated look on his face. “Damn it, Pyatro, I don’t know what he did but it’s not working. I need help looking at this, the cyka must have sabotaged something.” he I looked to the guard in the hall. He screamed and stumbled backwards blindly as the shapeshifter’s blood ate away at his eyes. The shapeshifter stormed after him without a sound. I edged closer, not sure what I was looking for, and then it hit me that this thing had no facial features anywhere on its body. “Well, what the blyat do I aim for, then?” I muttered to myself. I looked back to the control room, where the first man and Pyatro were struggling to pry a loose plate off of the control board to get at its insides. I sighed. “Right. Mission comes first.” I muttered. I dashed to the control room and did my best to shut out the guard’s screams. Even so, I couldn’t help but look when it opened its mouth. The empty, swirling black mass was replaced by a gaping maw opened up that took up most of its upper chest. It was perfectly circular and lined with chalk white teeth as big as a shark’s. I had to turn away, but I couldn’t plug my ears when I heard a loud crunch and the screaming abruptly stopped. I slipped inside and heaved my weight against the door. For an agonizing moment, I thought it wouldn’t close in time. I felt it slam into the door just as I turned the wheel to lock it. The hinges groaned in protest, but held. I slammed the steel shutters over the glass before I turned to face the others. “Pyatro and Camran, right?” I asked. Both nodded numbly. “All right then, what can I do to help?” I walked between them and peered at the exposed guts of the control panel. “Nothing without the right training. He must have done something because I can’t sound the alarm or contact command.” Pyatro shrugged helplessly. “All right, well, how long until you can fix it?” I demanded. “Oy blin, I don’t know. A few hours at least.” Pyatro replied. “We don’t have that kind of time. If there isn’t anything you can do to let command know shit’s hit the fan, we’ll do the next best thing. Close the outside doors so it can’t escape, shut down the elevator, and get on the PA system to let the guys downstairs know what’s going on. Tell them to send a doctor down to Level 0 for Maksim - the real one this time.” I snapped. “We’re safe here, at least, and this way we won’t let it get at the others. Even better, whatever it wants that’s in those cells will stay put.” the two looked at each other, then back at me. “That’s an order.” I added an edge to my voice, drumming my fingers against the barrel of my kalashnikov. Both men got to work in a hurry. “Outside doors and elevator access are locked up tight - on this floor, anyway. Lucky us.” Camran announced after a few minutes of work. “Nicely done. How about you, Pyatro?” I turned to Pyatro, who hadn’t said a word the whole time. “Well, either I’m blind or there’s no PA system here. Not accessible from this room, anyhow.” he threw up his hands in defeat. “Debil.” I muttered. “What?” he asked. “Nothing.” I grabbed the radio off his belt. “I guess we’ll do this the hard way.” I turned it on, held it up to the door (where the shapeshifter was still doing its best to break the door down) and waited for a response. “The hell is that? Pyatro, report!” an unfamiliar voice crackled. “This is Lieutenant Smirnov. 034 has escaped containment and cut off contact with command. We’ve trapped him on the ground floor and are locked in the control room. While we work on fixing the communication issue, you need to place a heavy guard on Level 0, plus a medical team for Major Maksim. You'll find him in 034’s cell - well, not really 034, but I don’t have time to explain that.” I paused. “I- what? Where’s Pyatro?” the voice on the other end sputtered. I sighed and held the radio up to Pyatro’s ear. “I’m right here, boss. This guy’s on the level. You better get up here and bag this thing quick. Before it gets back in here.” Pyatro said hurriedly. I nodded and pulled back the radio. “And one last thing: do not, I repeat do not send reinforcements to the ground floor until 0 is secure. Bring anything you can, explosives, flame units, nothing is overkill here. 034’s shapeshifting ability doesn’t seem to be restricted to its body mass and its bodily fluids are highly corrosive. I know what Maksim said, but for all our sakes I would take some of the rifles and body armor from the dead staff. Bullets don’t seem to be working too well.”. “All right, Lieutenant, I’ll see what I can do. You guys sit tight, help is on the way.” with that, the radio fell silent. By this time the shapeshifter had given up on trying to force its way in and started pacing back and forth just outside. Once or twice we heard it trying to pry the elevator doors open, with no success. Every now and then it would let out a howl of frustration so loud my ears were left ringing. I took another adrenaline shot and sat down to study the security footage from the lobby. I watched it pace back and forth and let out bellows of rage for half an hour before it noticed the camera above the door. Even without any eyes I could feel its attention fixed on me, like it knew I was watching. We stared each other down for a while, and just as I was starting to lose focus, the back mass of its chest swirled and warped. Suddenly a face popped out, just long enough for me to get a good look, and then it sank back and disappeared. It was Roman, clear as day, but long dead. His face was slack, eyes rolled up in his head, and a bullet hole right in the center of his forehead. One by one, more faces bulged out of its skin before sinking back into the black muck. Boris, Vadim, Jaro, Maksim, then Roman again, Makism, and finally myself. They kept repeating, a parade of dead friends and comrades. Sometimes they spoke to me. Mocking me, screaming at me to save them, telling me I’d let them down, that sort of thing. I kept a handle on my emotions until Yuri’s face appeared with the words “I DESERVED IT” scratched across his forehead in place of a bullet hole. For a second I was seized with fear and I wondered how he could have seen Yuri or known my connection to him. I calmed down and checked my belt for the photo that I kept tucked in a waterproof pouch, and as I suspected, it was missing. It was of the old team, when we’d just been inducted into the Spetsnaz and had no idea the world was full of monsters. Only half of that team is still around now - Leonid, Yuri, and Mikhail are all rotting in Pripyat somewhere. But I’m getting off track . . . now Mikhail, now Leonid, now Anton appeared, with different, equally infuriating messages on their foreheads. Now, Anton is off on his own mission, so I knew now that it was just guessing, hoping to strike a nerve by mocking my presumably dead comrades. Not that that pissed me off any less; by mow I was ready to open that door and tear those faces off myself. I caught myself, though; that was just what he wanted. He was trying to lure me out by working me up, but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of tearing me to shreds. I put Camran on the monitor and busied myself trying to find what was in the cells 034 wanted access to. There were four cells listed, all placed next to each other on one of the lowest portions of Level 0 still in use. There wasn’t much info on them. After an hour of digging, the only file I found had them listed as “instances 034-A, 034-C, and 034-D, recovered and relocated after the [REDACTED] facility was compromised.” I don’t like what this implies, that there;s more than one 034 around. I’d have bet any number of roubles that 034-B, the one that slipped through their fingers, stood just meters away in the hall. And are they all shapeshifters, too? Or something even worse? My musings were interrupted by a burst of static from the radio. “Lieutenant, we are in position and preparing to ascend. Do you copy?” the voice from earlier buzzed. “I copy. Do you have fail safes in case things go bad? Over.” I got up and paced in front of the door. “Of course, a sergeant rigged the motor and cables with explosives. If that fucker tries to get on, he’s in for a long drop.” the voice replied confidently. I wasn’t as convinced that that would do the trick, but it was better than anything else I could think of. “All right, proceed with caution. Camran, you have a visual on 034?” I turned to Camran, who had stopped paying attention to the camera feeds to listen in on the conversation. “Uh, yeah, he’s right-” he turned back to the monitor and stopped short. “Ay cyka, he just left the frame. Hang on, I’ll get him back.” he went through feeds of empty halls and checkpoints frantically. “All right, fine, but which way was it headed?” I asked impatiently, listening to the elevator doors close on the radio. “Ascending now, comrade. Over.” the voice announced. “Oh, don’t worry, it was heading away from the elevator, but we’ve got that door locked. He’s trapped now.” Camran assured me. “Right. Okay, good. One way or another, this will be over soon.” I sighed in relief. Minutes later, I could hear multiple pairs of boots stomping past the door. “Shut the door behind me. I’m going after them.” I pointed to Pyatro. AK-74 in hand, I caught up just in time to pass through the last empty checkpoint with Boris and Vadim. “It’s just me, don’t shoot, here’s proof.” I lifted my body plates to reveal the blood-soaked bandages on my stomach. “Ey man, welcome back!” Vadim clapped me on the back. In his other hand he had one of those future guns from the mess hall, and looked way too excited about it. “Nice to see you alive, how’d you do it?” Boris added. “Oh, that’s a long story. I’ll tell you all when we have more time.” I wanted to ask about Jaro, but a shout of surprise up ahead distracted me. I put my gun to my shoulder, but all I saw was an empty hall, the door leading to the outside world still closed, and a lone commando shooting at the floor in frustration. It was only when I looked at where he was shooting, where the door met the concrete floor, that I saw how the door was just barely ajar. What looked like a pool of ink bubbling and sloshing around, gradually seeping through the crack. “Cyka nahui blyat, it’s getting away!” I fumbled with the radio and started screaming into it, “Pyatro! open the fucking door, it’s getting away!”. No, this wasn’t going to happen, it wouldn’t get away. I wouldn’t let it. “Nice try. How do I know it’s you? The door’s closed anyway.” Pyatro replied. “Nu vrod blyat.” I muttered and thrust the radio to Vadim. “Say something!” I snapped. “Uh . . . davai.” Vadim said. “It turned into a liquid, or something, I don’t know how it works. You fucked up, it didn’t close all the way.” Boris added. I put the radio back to my ear and heard Pyatro struggling with the controls. “Oh no.” from the dread in his voice, I knew something was wrong. “I didn’t think- When it was in here, it was hovering around the door controls for a while. I didn’t think it messed with them. I checked and they seemed fine! But, ah, it looks like it did, just in case it needed a quick escape.” his voice sounded hollow. “I can’t get it open in time.” the door started sliding open at a glacial pace, grinding against the floor. By the time we were able to squeeze through, the shapeshifter had sprouted a pair of enormous, batlike wings and was high about the trees. Goddamn minefield was nothing but a waste of time, then. Through my scope I could see it getting used to its new appendages, almost falling out of the sky at times, but sadly it never lost control. Soon it was out of range and gliding to safety. One commando was on the radio with command - the signal finally worked out here - and soon half a dozen choppers were in pursuit. I had a nasty feeling they wouldn’t catch up to him, though. I was right, sadly, and the trail went cold a few kilometers into the pursuit. We were debriefed in the afternoon, with my debriefing being the longest by far (for obvious reasons). The minefield is being kept for security reasons, so I guess we did some good with it after all. Soon, new personnel will be moving into the facility by helicopter, and everyone else will be staying here until we get assigned new missions. The facility being secured is all well and good, but we failed our primary objective spectacularly. Maksim is stable but comatose, and i’m sure he’ll get an earful when - if - he wakes up. From what I’ve heard, his outlook isn’t too good. For once, I’m not happy we’re done with our mission. Our group is being broken up and a new dedicated task force is getting the job of hunting 034-B down. The note it left me makes it even worse. Camran found it folded up in the lobby, next to the control room. It was brought to me in case I could glean anything useful from it, but it’s just that bastard taunting me. The grammar was surprisingly good; I wonder where they learned it. The handwriting, on the other hand, was atrocious, but it went something like this: “Dear comrade Nikolai: So, you’ve won this time. I’m sure you’d have loved the satisfaction of stuffing me in a cell, but by now you know what I want, and you’ve kept it from me. Make no mistake, though, I will be back. For my imprisoned brothers, and for you. I won’t let them suffer under your mad scientists any longer if I can help it. But first . . . first I’ll be coming for you. You’ve proven yourself to be crafty and annoyingly hard to kill, and I can’t have you ruining my plans again. And, of course, I want my revenge. But you already knew that, didn’t you? We’ll meet again, maybe not soon, maybe not for a few months, or even years if you’re lucky, but I’ll be back. If luck is on my side, you’ll never see me coming. In the meantime, here’s some advice: trust no one. You can’t afford to anymore, not while I’m still free. Who knows? Maybe I’ll just visit from time to time before I finally end it, just to see how you’re doing. After all, I’ll be so very bored while I wait for my brothers’ jailers to slip up again. And you know how I like to keep myself entertained. I’d go on, but I really should get going before you catch up to me. It’s good for me to remember, seeing as how it’s a death threat from a sentient, shapeshifting monster, but I can’t let that make me paranoid. Life’s too short to worry constantly, especially in this line of work. He probably just threw that in there to make me paranoid anyway; he does seem to love being ominous and dramatic. Then again . . . a little vigilance never hurts. I’ll keep an eye out for anything suspicious, but for now, I’ll go see a medic about this knife wound and then I’ll fill my squad in on what went down.
