9th Moon, 50 AC Feast Hall The Great Hall of the Red Keep was said to feast a thousand men, and on that glorious day, perhaps it did. The cavernous hall had high, narrow windows, a gallery spanning the width of the room, and easily over a thousand candles along the walls and the long tables, illuminating the celebration with warm, golden light. No expense had been spared to accommodate the well-being of the realm’s foremost assembled nobles. Rich tapestries depicting the triumphs of Aegon’s Conquest and the ancient glories of House Targaryen hung between the pillars, while the air was thick with the mingled scents of roasted meats, sweet Arbor wines, and perfumed oils burning in silver braziers. Servants wearing silken tabards emblazoned with the red three-headed dragon of Targaryen moved in practiced silence, refilling goblets and clearing trenchers as a troop of Tyroshi musicians in the gallery played lively tunes upon drums, harps and flutes. A Lyseni mistress joined the music by singing as well, her voice as serene and smooth as sandsilk. It was the grandest display of power and prosperity the realm had seen in a generation, and a signal that the days of Cruel Maegor were well and truly done. The Dais On a raised dais, before the Iron Throne, looming large and jagged - a reminder of duty even in the times of celebration - sat the King of the Seven Kingdoms, along with those closest to him - his sister, his niece, the Queen Mother, the former Lord Regent, now Hand, and the Master of Ships, Lord Aethan Velaryon, the King’s grandfather. The high table gleamed with polished gold and crimson silk, covered with gilt chalices filled with the most expensive and aged vintages of the Arbor. Behind the royal family and their companions, naturally, stood the Kingsguard - all of the King’s Seven, in ceremonial pale plate and with pristine white cloaks over their shoulders. The High Tables Before the dais, facing towards the Hall, seats of prominence were given to the Great Houses - the Lords first, then others of their kin, and finally their vassals, seated along the tables that span near half of the Hall’s length. Interspersed amongst the Great Houses were the members of the Small Council, each sitting with the Great House that was their house’s liege lord. The Lower Tables Towards the back of the hall, seats were provided to the lower nobility too, for bastards and those who preferred to stay in the shadows, along with the travelling hedge knights that came for the tourney. All were allowed to gaze upon the King’s glory and partake in his celebration. Wealthy merchants and powerful men lacking in noble lineages could also be found, though most had had to bribe or slither their way into the grand event. Menu In honour of the Seven Aspects of the deity, and of the Seven Kingdoms that King Jaehaerys the First would rule, seven courses were served during the feast. When servants brought out new plates and trays of fine delicacies, they first presented them before the royal dais. From there, at the King’s word, select plates might be sent to favoured guests, before the dishes were served to the rest of the hall. For the First Course, they served a clear capon broth with saffron and winter herbs, fresh white bread with churned sweet butter, pickled vegetables and olives, and platters of smoked trout and eel arranged in complicated patterns. The pinnacle of this course were grand sugar sculptures created by a master confectioner from Pentos, wrought in shimmering white sugar and delicate gold leaf - a seven-pointed star, a crown mirroring faithfully the one that rested atop the King’s brow, and even a three-headed dragon with its wings spread wide. Drinks There was no shortage of alcohol to be found l to accompany the many tasty dishes being delivered to the many distinguished guests, although the selection was decidedly Arbor-themed. Most of the wine was simply known as Arbor “red” or “gold,” but those with a more experienced pallet could tell the subtle differences in each vintage’s origin. Vinetown Gilt (a classic Arbor gold, stored in the cellars of Vinetown some twenty years). Keepsake Deep Claret (a flavorful red grown and fermented at the palace of Keepsake, the present main residence of the Redwynes upon the Arbor, aged ten years). Starfish Sweetwine (a sweet red from Starfish Harbor, aged thirty years). Maiden’s Blush (a powerful red from the vineyards outside Mermaid’s Palace, aged twenty years). Cask Red/Gold (a collection of various Ryamsport reds and golds from the Cask family collection, aged between ten and twenty years). Amber Port *(a lively gold port brought in from the private collection of Lady Lorraine Orme, aged forty years). Peachtree Port (a current favorite red port upon the Arbor, aged ten years). Old Vine Brandy (a potent liquor reserved for only those with strong tolerances for alcohol, aged some forty years and perhaps the most expensive, readily available vintages in Westeros). Ryam Firebrandy (a fiery red brandy named in honor of the legendary Prince Ryam Redwyne, the Butcher of Bandallon, aged twenty-five years). The Musicians & Dance Floor A large area towards the back of the hall was kept clear for those who sought to dance, with polished parquet floors glimmering in the light of a thousand candles. A group of musicians sat upon a small raised platform nearby, positioned neatly so that their tunes resonated in the cavernous Great Hall. They played lively tunes upon lutes, fiddles, pipes and a small drum, and a variety of bards joined them throughout the evening, singing songs better and lesser known alike - some of them newly composed to the honour of King Jaehaerys Targaryen, and to the glory of the Targaryen dynasty. Tall young man with bright red hair and a battered old lute, calling himself ‘the Silver Bard’, notably strike a gentler chord than the rest. A bard brought along with the retinue from Dragonstone, the young man bowed deep before the dais. “For His Grace,” he said simply, before his fingers found the lute’s strings and his song rose above the crowd. His song was too, of course, for the House Targaryen, but he didn’t sing of Balerion’s shadow or Aegon’s fire. Instead, his voice, high and clear, sang of winding roads and green fields, of a wheelhouse as glorious as a castle and of travelled places far and wide, of dreams and child-like joy, and of the weight of responsibility, shouldered so gracefully.
