I switched to DuckDuckGo a year ago in an attempt to reduce the Google footprint in my life. I came to terms with the fact that I don't want to remove Google completely, because there are areas where I'm okay with the privacy tradeoffs. That said, I can still reduce the amount of data I voluntarily give Google, and that's what I achieved by switching from Google Search to DuckDuckGo. A year later, I've come to a conclusion that upsets me: DuckDuckGo doesn't sufficiently replace Google Search. I wanted it to, and I went all in. Default search provider switched on mobile and web. What I find though is that DDG is only useful for high level, generic searches, for example if I'm searching for documentation, song lyrics, etc. Where DDG lacks is in it's ability to answer detailed queries, for instance why does the documentation say xyz, how do these song lyrics reflect bla bla, what does this error mean? Throughout the year, I found myself having to take two steps when searching - step one was searching with DDG, and step two was following up with a Google Search query, because I couldn't find what I needed with DDG. I think Google Search really shines with user generated content results, like Reddit, forum posts, Stackoverflow, etc., whereas DDG suffers on that front. I guess my point in posting is I'm curious if anyone else has found this to be the case? I'd still like a privacy friendly alternative to Google Search, and I'll use DDG where warranted, but I couldn't completely cut Google Search out and replace it with DDG. submitted by /u/stanley_fatmax to r/privacy [link] [comments]

Farewell. ​I used to use the mobile version of DuckDuckGo. Whether it was Brave's useless features or Firefox's terrible ad campaigns, I was pushed to try something else, and that's when I gave DuckDuckGo a shot. I loved DuckDuckGo the moment I first saw it, but now I can clearly see that it's genuinely mess. There is no search history, no private tabs, and it's completely crippled when it comes to customization. It doesn't block ads properly, Duck Player is poor quality, there are no alternative search engines, and its not provides extension support. On top of that, it comes bloated with many features I neither need nor want (like the "return to" button). Because of this, I personally can no longer choose to use DuckDuckGo. If I wanted to use DuckDuckGo at all, it would only be for its Email Protection—which should be a shameful thing for a search engine. Just give us a bit more customization and basic browser features.
