Conservatives underestimate the environmental impact of sustainable behaviors compared to liberals. Conservatives tend to view actions like recycling or eating a plant based diet as having less of a positive impact than liberals do, which predicts lower engagement in these behaviors.

[OC] Dairy vs. plant-based milk: what are the environmental impacts?
A growing number of people are interested in switching from dairy to plant-based alternatives. But are they better for the environment, and which is best? In the chart, we compare milks across a number of environmental metrics: land use, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and eutrophication (the pollution of ecosystems with excess nutrients). These are compared per liter of milk. Cow’s milk has significantly higher impacts than plant-based alternatives across all metrics. It causes around three times as much greenhouse gas emissions; uses around ten times as much land; two to twenty times as much freshwater; and creates much higher levels of eutrophication. If you want to reduce the environmental footprint of your diet, switching to plant-based alternatives is a good option. Which of the vegan milks is best? It really depends on the impact we care most about. Almond milk has lower greenhouse gas emissions and uses less land than soy, for example, but requires more water and results in higher eutrophication. All of the alternatives have a lower impact than dairy, but there is no clear winner across all metrics. What surprised you most after switching to a plant-based diet?
I started adding more plant-based meals over the past few months (not even 100% vegan, just more whole foods), and honestly, a few things surprised me. My grocery bill didn’t go up — it actually went down. Meal prep became simpler once I stopped overcomplicating it. My afternoon energy crashes reduced a lot. I used to think plant-based eating meant expensive superfoods and complicated recipes, but most of my meals now are just: Lentils or chickpeas Rice or quinoa Roasted vegetables One simple sauce That base turns into 4–5 different meals during the week. Curious — what was the biggest change you noticed when going more plant-based? submitted by /u/Roger5055 to r/PlantBasedDiet [link] [comments]

How would you feel if your child’s school served only plant based lunches?
So, my cousin’s school has always offered "free" lunches for everyone. The meals have been pretty healthy, and now the new school board suggested making them plant-based (not sure if vegan) while still keeping the focus on healthy food. The school isn’t pushing veganism or saying meat is bad. I’m not totally sure of all the arguments, but the idea seems to be about encouraging kids to eat more vegetables and fruits. Personally, i think it’s a neat idea. Kids don’t need to eat meat or animal products all the time anyway. But some parents are furious. They’ve even started protesting and demanding the school board members be fired. I honestly don’t get why it’s such a big deal. How would you feel if your child’s school made this change? Would you be upset, or not? and why? EDIT: The food is still healthy and unprocessed. They don't serve processed meat or dairy alternatives (PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU SAY THEY ARE GOING TO OFFER PROCESSED FAKE MEAT INSTEAD AND ASSUME IT'S GOING TO BE SOME SHIT FOOD). To give you one example (I don't have many as I'm not a parent in the school): Before they had pasta bolognese, this week they had lentil curry stew with naan bread. submitted by /u/Sensitive-Menu-7806 to r/NoStupidQuestions [link] [comments]

How do you feel about people who are “mostly” plant based
In 2020 I went vegan for ethical reasons and it didn’t stick. I think that in our current culture it is just a very extreme diet and it was not sustainable for me personally. Since then, I’ve had periods where I eat plant based 90% of the time. Since 2020 I lived in the Netherlands for several years. In that time in the Netherlands there was a small movement to eat “somewhat less meat” or incorporate a meat-free day of the week. And this was primarily for ethical reasons (climate change). Because of that, I saw a huge increase in the vegan options available there. But my question for you as vegans is, do you see these “half-actions” towards ethical veganism as good? Or do you feel irritated that people can’t commit? When you meet someone who eats “mostly” plant based, does it annoy you or do you encourage them to continue? Both? submitted by /u/SweetPickleRelish to r/AskVegans [link] [comments]

Plant Based ≠ Vegan, it feels like it’s trying to catch people out on purpose
In the area I live, each time something said ‘Plant Based’ the ingredients would confirm its vegan or it would have a stamp confirming as such but recently I’ve seen a rise of things labelled Plant Based being a new term for vegetarian. I recently went to a pub for dinner with my mother and they had a ‘Planet Based burger served with fries and vegan mayo’ I thought it sounded really nice but I noticed it didn’t have a (VE) note next to it saying it was vegan. When the waitress took our order, my mother asked what was in the burger that didn’t make it vegan, the waitress said it was served with dairy cheese. So we then asked if I could get the burger without the cheese to which the waitress replied that the burger patty came with the cheese on it (I’m assuming frozen together) so I ended up getting something different. I’m not really sure why there’s been this rise of ‘Plant Based’ labelled items are now being only vegetarian at times and I know it’s more of a mild annoyance but I know if someone missed the (VG) label on accident they may have eaten dairy without realising. There was the whole argument with farmers saying vegan foods couldn’t use words like ‘egg’ or ‘milk’ for products that weren’t made of that actual item (there was 0 arguments for cream eggs not using egg!) I feel like Plant-Based should mean 100% made from plants and not a gamble to if it’s actually a truthful label or not. submitted by /u/Spaceward_Bound to r/vegan [link] [comments]

Plant based diets ARE NOT better for the environment!
Here's a link to the pdf of the book: https://library.uniteddiversity.coop/Food/Michael_Pollan-The_Omnivores_Dilemma.pdf This is not just an opinion but a FACT and the amount of people ignorant to this is mind blowing. I've been reading this book recently called "The Omnivores Dilemma". It's a brilliant book and it's very critical of the industrial food industry as a whole. The book was updated in 2006 and concerns itself specifically with the US but it's sill very much relevant. The main point is that the current methods of industrial farming both meat and vegetables are incredibly harmful and unsustainable. It takes 50 gallons of oil to plant 1 acre of corn. This is to refine fertilizers and pesticides and make the energy required to do this. (Plus some other stuff but I can't find the spot in the book.) This is before any fuel has entered a tractor. Then to do all the work that acre needs over the season will use 100s of gallons more. Then the insane amount of energy that corn requires to refine down to a marketable product is immense. Refined food products like tofu require huge amounts of energy and resources to make and are not good for the environment. This is incredibly harmful for the soil as well. The field will spend long amounts of time as raw dirt that blows away in the wind. The corn belt has lost 2ft of its topsoil since industrial farming began. The soil also contains far less nutrients due to overuse of fertilizes and lack of crop rotation. I'm so incredibly jealous of your soil and your abusing it. It's disheartening to think that this was once the great plains and home to bison. An incredibly healthy and productive ecosystem. And a much better carbon sink than it is now. If the grasslands were kept as they were and bison were farmed this would be a much much more environmental way to farm. With just a little management it could've be incredibly productive and environmentally healthy. An example from the book of a productive and healthy farm was PolyFace farm. It was just 100 acres and produced yearly; 30,000 dozen eggs, 10,000 broilers, 800 stewing hens, 25,000lbs of beef, 25,000lbs of pork, 1000 turkeys, and 500 rabbits. The cows eat grass and the chickens are occasionally fed grain. The chickens fertilize the soil while eating bugs from cow manure. The land on this farm is healthy and strong because of this management. A hundred acres of corn will produce more calories but is devastating for the environment. As of 2006 more than half of the calories consumed by Americans derived from corn. Of course factory farming beef is devastating for the environment too. But a well managed, grass fed, diversified farm will be more environmentally friendly than a vegetable monoculture ever will be. I could talk for hours about this topic but can only write so much without getting bored. Everyone please read this book! It will answer any of your questions more in depth than I ever could. submitted by /u/phalcon64 to r/UnpopularFacts [link] [comments]

Has anyone lost a lot of weight going plant based?
Im a 34 year old man, and im 60 lbs overweight. My cholesterol is a little high, and I don’t know if I’m ready to go on ozempic yet. In the past, I admit that I have had success with Keto and weightlifting, but I’m honestly just not a huge meat guy. Is it delicious? Yes, but it’s expensive and I just don’t love it. Deep down I believe in a balanced diet, but mentally I just want something that I can follow where I don’t have to count calories all the time. My one friend went Plant Based, and he totally reversed his high cholesterol pretty quickly. He says he doesn’t count calories perse but doesn’t eat a lot of processed vegan food either and watches stuff like nuts, avocados etc. My question is, does anyone have real success here with this? Does anyone have real success going off a vegan diet as well? I’m curious because unlike Keto, the vegan subreddit isn’t exactly full of before and after pics. submitted by /u/alderaamen131313 to r/loseit [link] [comments]

Why is there so much hate on this subreddit against veganism/plant based diets?
I got diagoned with PCOS when I was 20 in 2016, after years of several sympthoms. After about 8 months after that I decided to give eating vegan a try and this cleared up about 80% of all my PCOS sympthoms after about 2-3 months. 7 year later, I still eat vegan en still manage my PCOS, without any form of medication or hormonal birth control. I have seen several posts here filled with frustration, since nothing seems to work. Yet when I suggest opting for the vegan diet, I get downvoted into oblivion and get a lot of hatefull PMs. I thought this subreddit was to help others who suffer from PCOS and that is my intention aswell. Veganism is not a cure for everybody or for all the problems in the world, but is anything really? Especially reading the long lists of things many of rhe posters here have tried and failed to see any positive result, is me suggesting veganism really that weird? submitted by /u/Wintersneeuw02 to r/PCOS [link] [comments]

Plant-based meat is ruining fast food options for lifelong vegetarians
I've been a vegetarian since birth, never eaten meat and never will. Strong smells of bacon can induce vomiting and I generally dislike it (near my person, not generally, not one to go on rants or try and convert anyone). So when I've had to go to fast food joints with buddies I've always opted for some fries or a meal if they have a burger with a vegetable patty. But that isn't an option now. Now it's just plant based, meat imitation. The newer fast food places don't even bother with a bean/vegetable patty, they skip straight to the plant based. Burger King will probably phase out their bean burger soon. For one, production processes are sufficiently opaque that I feel uncomfortable eating the newest form of ultra processed food, and two, it's horrible. I don't like the taste or texture of something that resembles meat. It's great that people are being weaned off meat totally or massively reducing their intake. It's a W for the the planet and themselves. But I wish restaurants and fast food places especially didn't give up on veggie patties and go all out on meat substitute. Just feels sad. Felt like things were finally moving in the right direction, but I'm back at square one. What's more, I eat dairy, copious amounts of it. Sad to see vegans are wholly being catered to and vegetarians are being thrown to the side. It's more of a struggle going into a city with meat eating friends than it was a few years ago, for me. A simple Google about this topic returns ONE article and one post on reddit, the rest are Vox-like articles about why people dislike vegans. It's such a non-issue it seems, you can't even Google it. Sad. submitted by /u/CrossSectioned to r/vegetarian [link] [comments]
