[Owczarski] These deals bothered Rivers... “Giannis said so many things,” a former coach said, “It stems from your actions, which is, 'My brothers have to be on this team.' Well then, are you about a championship? 'Cause they’re not only not helping us win a championship, it’s creating dissension.”
ESPN continued to report Antetokounmpo’s desire to leave Milwaukee, and the team held superficial trade talks with New York. Ownership tried to assuage Antetokounmpo’s discontent by re-signing his older brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo. It was only then that ESPN stopped. But even the signing failed to smooth everything over. Waiting until late August to finalize Thanasis' minimum deal irritated the family and its representatives. “I have seen them make every decision with the foundational piece being, ‘What will Giannis think of this?’” one team source said of the top of the organization. Added another:“And that is what has gotten us to this point.” The team also signed Giannis' youngest brother, Alex, to a contract that gave him his first chance at playing in the NBA. The brothers' personal skills coach Mike Kalavros also was allowed to travel with the team. These deals bothered Rivers and other coaches, as they felt the organization had bowed too much to appease their star player. To them, Antetokounmpo wanted things both ways. “Giannis said so many things,” a former coach said, “It stems from your actions, which is, 'My brothers have to be on this team.' Well then, are you about a championship? 'Cause they’re not only not helping us win a championship, it’s creating dissension.” Horst, meanwhile, appeared to try to appease Rivers with a different preferred player. The Bucks signed Amir Coffey, who began his career under Rivers with the Clippers. The team would cut former draft picks Chris Livingston and Tyler Smith to make room for the veteran. Then on the team’s media day on Sept. 30, on a Zoom call from Greece because he and the team said he contracted COVID-19, Giannis Antetokounmpo challenged the veracity of Edens’ statement that they had the on-court “meeting” at the practice facility in early May. Edens was annoyed, but two high-level team sources said he did not carry a grudge. Rivers held another remote training camp in 2025, this time in Miami. Even with a roster that had been completely turned over from the one he took over in 2023-24 (only two rotation players remained), Rivers and the Bucks were still chasing the culture they tore down. Antetokounmpo was already over it. He said they were not a championship favorite. He stressed they would have to play hard, play connected, and operate with elite spacing on offense. Winning would be tough without such discipline. The team started better than the previous year, but was rough around the edges. With Antetokounmpo leading the offense as its primary playmaker, the team started 7-5. But then, Rivers inexplicably decided to pivot away from a fast-paced offense that surrounded Antetokounmpo with elite shooters. He benched Trent, promoted Kuzma and began to pull Turner off the floor. The team remained undisciplined, from cutting their running lanes short to turning the ball over and fouling too much. Rivers did not stress offensive rebounding and the Bucks continually operated at a possession deficit, even as players routinely said the modern game required teams to crash the glass. Members of the staff acknowledged they were disorganized, not rooted in any firm principles, and were too late to adjust their concepts and play styles. “What are we doing?” almost became a season-long mantra. ..... On March 24, the players association asked if the Bucks were in violation of the league’s player participation policy. The star escalated the dispute, electing not to finish the West Coast road trip with the team in Portland, instead staying in Los Angeles to work out on his own. In early April, Antetokounmpo pressed the issue further, welcoming a formal league investigation into the team. Ultimately, the Bucks were cleared of wrongdoing. At one point, Haslam had a verbal confrontation with Saratsis over the entire matter. “It’s personal now," said a former coach. "It’s gotten to vitriol.” Antetokounmpo felt ownership and Horst had quit on the season by forcing him to sit out, even though the team was mathematically still in the play-in race. To him, it was a cardinal sin. But Antetokounmpo’s unavailability (he missed 46 games entirely and played only 12 games fully healthy), the petulance with which he did play, combined with those speaking to ESPN on his behalf in contrast to his public declarations of commitment, had worn out the ownership, coaching staff, even the locker room. Yet throughout the season, Horst appeared unaware of how his team, once a model of structure, discipline and culture, had so quickly withered. The general manager had been noticeably absent much of the season, scouting the upcoming draft class. “He definitely took a bunker mentality, but I’m not sure I blame him,” a former employee said. Rivers, who had grown tired of answering questions about the team’s decision-making on Antetokounmpo’s playing status, said on April 3 that grown men needed to talk about it. His comment was seen as a not-so-veiled shot at the player, Horst and perhaps ownership. With just a few games to go, Athentetokounmpo was clear he wanted to play in at least one game with Thanasis and Alex. The team was done acquiescing. “I care about what he feels and what he cares about,” Horst said on April 7. “I have his entire career. But it doesn’t mean that you always just do what someone else wants." The three brothers never set foot on the court together in a game. March 2026: Doc Rivers calls it a career Ironically, one of the last meetings Rivers called actually hit home. On March 20 in Phoenix he told a group of select veterans he would begin curtailing their playing time. Then he opened the floor for an airing of grievances. Players spoke, and it was a constructive, respectful discussion. Rivers did not lash out. One person in the room couldn’t believe it. “Everyone was finally being honest with each other now that we don’t have a chance,” a coach said. By late March, Rivers turned in-game coaching duties over to Ham and admitted he did not meet expectations. It was a hard self-assessment for the Marquette graduate. “I was brought in here to take the team to the next level and that just never happened,” Rivers said March 31. “It never materialized. It doesn’t matter the why. From a coaching perspective, you feel like the city that you’re from you didn’t get the job done, and that is something I carry very heavy with me.” May 2026: Too many mistakes on all sides Following the last game April 12, the Bucks were stranded on the tarmac at Philadelphia International Airport. It was a fitting end to a terrible season. Rivers joked they couldn’t get rid of him. Antetokounmpo grabbed control of the music, and played songs littered with farewell messages. But who were they really for? Everyone on the team knew Rivers was leaving, and after the season finale in Philadelphia he effectively gave a farewell press conference. But, he wouldn’t say it. Instead, he wanted the team to announce his departure. When told of Rivers’ clear insinuation, Antetokounmpo’s eyes widened. “Oh, that changes a lot then,” he exclaimed. Whether that reaction was sarcastic, spontaneous or an attempt to send a message, it underscored how Rivers making it to the end of the season had exacerbated the disconnect between Antetokounmpo and the organization. It's hard to know Antetokounmpo's level of self-awareness, but whatever buttons he tried to push, or methods of communication he felt best to use, fell just as flat as those of the head coach. Antetokounmpo let it be known he did not like locker room leaks, but his mental state was chronicled nearly all season by anonymous sources. He pleaded for accountability but then tried to pass off those reports as someone else’s doing. He would call his teammates selfish but then stand on a visiting team’s court with a former coach and yell about how that person would make sure he got the ball. By the time the team got back to Milwaukee from Philadelphia, Rivers’ office was already cleaned out. Within days, the Bucks had all but hired a new head coach Antetokounmpo personally liked, respected and wanted to play for in former assistant Taylor Jenkins. Horst knew this, too, although Antetokounmpo was not directly looped into the process. “I don’t think Milwaukee is just getting just a good coach, I think they’re getting a good person,” Antetokounmpo told the Journal Sentinel. “And that’s where it starts, with having a good person around that’s going to be able to set the tone, that set the culture and what Milwaukee Bucks basketball is all about.” Antetokounmpo had determined all the Bucks could do to convince him to remain with the organization was a maximum contract of $275 million over four years. Even that might not be enough to persuade him. Despite a March proclamation that his relationship with the team could be salvaged with “couples therapy,” Antetokounmpo said on April 12 he was going to put his phone on “do not disturb” and not answer it. “Just stay away from it – all of it,” he said. “I feel like this season, not just because of the way it went, it was draining for me for sure and how everybody approached my situation and the Bucks situation. But again, if it was draining for me, it was definitely draining for the team and for the organization." For their part, ownership told Jenkins, the new coach, he should not assume Antetokounmpo would be on the roster. The team eventually brought Jenkins in with a six-year deal worth around $60 million. Jenkins and Antetokounmpo spoke on several occasions after his hiring, but other than that, Antetokounmpo stuck by his statement that he was not going to pick up the phone. No other messages or calls from the Bucks to their star player were answered heading into June. The Bucks did not communicate to his representatives about some of their discussions with potential trade partners, either. Antetokounmpo also did not allow any member of the team’s strength and conditioning staff to oversee his workouts in Milwaukee or Greece, despite being under contract. One of the most dominant, explosive eras in basketball effectively ended in the quiet – except for the sighs of relief from those who believed it was just time for it to be over. For many, the lessons of arguably the greatest era in franchise history won't be positive. “When I own a team or run a team there will be things that I do and don’t do and decisions that I make and don’t make that I’ve learned from the experience of rising with the Milwaukee Bucks,” Connaughton told the Journal Sentinel, “and dare I say the experience of getting to where the Bucks are today.” Antetokounmpo, too, told the Journal Sentinel if he were to ever become a head coach, he would adopt Budenholzer’s ethos. “I’m doing exactly the same thing – I’m changing nothing,” he told the Journal Sentinel. “Coach ‘Bud,’ he knew how to create a culture. A thousand percent.” To him, the organization had lost its way, letting all the elements that made Milwaukee a special, winning place slip away – and therefore making the Bucks indistinguishable from any other NBA franchise. “Some way, somehow, I have to get there again,” Antetokounmpo told the Journal Sentinel. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be with me being the main guy and all that. If it is me, great. But I want to be there again. If that’s going to be me being there as a role player, if that’s going to me being there as the fifth option, if that’s going to be me being there as the No. 1 guy that takes them there, I don’t give two (expletive). I want to get there again." The team will now try to build a new foundation with a coach rooted in the same principles of culture-building as the man who first constructed it in 2018. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the granite cornerstone, will not be a part of it. My (31M) pregnant girlfriend (23F) has been lying about her age for our entire relationship. Is there any way for me to trust her again?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/ThrowRA_Plant6074 Originally posted to r/relationship_advice My (31M) pregnant girlfriend (23F) has been lying about her age for our entire relationship. Is there any way for me to trust her again? Thanks to u/soayherder for suggesting this BoRU Original Post: May 28, 2026 My girlfriend and I have been together for a little over a year. When we met, I was 30 and she said she was 25. I'm 31 now, and she's been pretending to be 26 for about 4 months. We literally celebrated what she said was her 26th birthday and she referred to it as her 26th birthday. She's 10 weeks pregnant, but she found out a month ago. She only told me about it not even 3 weeks ago because she was supposedly nervous about my reaction. She was on birth control, whatever the ring is that is inserted. I know she's being truthful about that because I've seen it and it's even come out of her by accident before. I'm unsure about us having a kid right now. We've been together a year, and we don't even live together. She spends most of her time at my place, but she doesn't actually live here. I guess I also took the risk by not using condoms, but I've been in other relationships where we've just relied on birth control, and it was fine. I do use condoms, it's just that after we'd been together a while we decided we were comfortable enough to just use the birth control. I'm nervous about the idea of us having a baby and I told her I wasn't sure a relationship of a year is really the ideal stable thing to be bringing a baby into, and she's been saying she knows but she just doesn't think she can't not have it and she cries and makes me feel bad. I'm not trying to leave this all on her and I will take responsibility, that's not really what this is about. She usually talks on the phone on speaker phone. She walks around holding her phone with it on speaker like they do on all the reality shows so you can hear everything being said. I find it really annoying. I don't want to listen to her full conversations she has with people. She was talking to her mom and sort of stressing about being pregnant and her mom said I can't believe you're going to have a baby at 23, you're too young....or something along those lines. All I really heard was the 23 part. I was like wait, wtf? I sat there silently waiting for her to get off the phone and then I immediately asked her why her mom said she was 23. She just looked at my surprised like she didn't know what to say, and I don't even think she registered that her mom had said that when I was right there hearing the whole thing. Your own mom doesn't get your age wrong by 3 whole years. She looked annoyed and also like she was going to cry and said she was really 23 and that she only lied because she found out my age first and thought I wouldn't take her seriously if she told me she was 22. She was 22 when we met and that 26th birthday we celebrated was really her 23rd. I just stared at her for the longest time because I didn't even know what to say. She's right, I probably wouldn't have entered into a relationship with a 22 year old, a hook up maybe but not a full blown relationship. I feel like such an idiot. I've didn't think I could be this stupid. I've dated many other women that were usually my age, up to just a few years younger than me. I know there's not a huge difference in number of years between 22 and 25, but 22 just makes me feel weird. Maybe she seemed a little immature for somebody in their mid-20s, but she has her own apartment, an actual job, she graduated college and has been lying about the exact year this whole time. Yeah she seemed a little younger than me, but I figured oh I guess this is what it's like to date somebody 5 years younger. She doesn't seem like somebody who just graduated college. She presents herself like she has a little more experience than that and acts a little more mature, or I thought she did. She says she wanted to tell me a bunch of times but got scared once more time went on. She keeps apologizing and saying she loves me and doesn’t want to lose me. I don't know why, but somehow I feel bad. Like I've taken advantage of her or something? I know I shouldn't feel bad at all. I guess I just can't get over that she's been lying about it for a year, like actively changed info about her life to fit this lie. I still like who she is. By that I mean that even though I know her real age now, it doesn't change anything else that actually attracts me to her or that I like about her. It feels wrong to be like oh just because you're 23 I don't like you anymore. It's the lie I guess that bothers me more, even though the age difference also makes me feel like a creep. It makes me wonder what else she told me was a lie. Was she even on birth control when she got pregnant? I know she was on it at one point in our relationship but was she on it when she actually got pregnant? I wasn't doubting her at all before, but now I don't know. I'm not somebody who would ever jump to somebody baby trapping me. that's not something I ever thought would come out of my mouth. You have sex you take the risk and regardless of birth control I played a part, but it just makes me feel so much more sick than I already felt over the idea of having a baby right now. I may not have a choice but to be involved with her for a very long time to come and I'm just freaked out by it all. Maybe I've overreacting. I don't think it was malicious on her part, but I just can't believe she kept it up for so long. What if anything could ever be done to build trust here again? Is there any way for this to move forward? Editor's note: OOP posted lots of responses, listing significant details for more context Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Are you sure she’s even actually pregnant ETA: keeping her age from you was 100% malicious on her part. OOP: I've seen 2 pregnancy tests (not watch her take them) and she has an ultrasound picture with her name on it (I was not present when that was done because she hadn't even told me she was pregnant yet). Commenter 2: This is not good. She actually went to an ultrasound without you present? She's been lying about her age and hiding a pregnancy. This is not someone you can trust. These are big lies and indicates she will lie to you in the future when she feels your reaction will be bad. I’m not sure here, but isn't an ultrasound a little early at 10 weeks? OOP: She *says* she took a few tests and they were positive, but she had no clue how far along she was. She was too nervous to tell me. She went to a clinic to confirm it and find out how far along she was. She told me the day after she had the ultrasound. She was worried she might have been one of those weird cases where you're like 4 months pregnant and have no idea. To me, the being nervous to tell me and wanting to confirm it aren't that weird. I don't hold that against her. It'd be different if she had tried to hide it for a long time. Commenter 3: I think you’re right to reevaluate the relationship. If it wasn’t just this lie, how would you feel? Honestly sometimes talking on speakerphone all the time would’ve been a deal breaker for me. I would let her know you’ll support the baby financially and coparent if she doesn’t want to abort or put it up for adoption, but she’s clearly not mature enough for a relationship so you need to take a step back from that. OOP: If there was a way to know this was truly the only lie, then maybe I could move forward, but I don't know. She made up a bunch of other little lies to back up this one, so... Commenter 4: No, you can’t trust her again. But I’m curious how you didn’t know? You never talked about graduating school or first jobs or anything? This is a big lie, and that’s a long time to keep it up. OOP: We talked about those things, not a ton but we definitely talked about them, and she lied about when she graduated. I've even seen her license, but I didn't look at her birthday. I wasn't looking at it to check her age. We were laughing about how bad her picture is. It was right there and I could have seen it a long time ago. OOP explains more about his GF's menstrual cycles and the timing of pregnancy OOP: She told me she didn't know when her last period was and she was scared she was going to be one of those weird cases when you're like 4 months pregnant and have no idea. + She didn't miss her period for 4 whole months. She was just being paranoid about not knowing how far along she actually was, and apparently there have been women who gets periods and end up being very pregnant. She didn't remember when her last period was, and then what she could remember only lasted 2 days and that's shorter than what it normally is for her I guess. She was just freaked out when she got a positive pregnancy test. She was scared. She just said it like "Idk, I was scared I'd go in and find out I was actually 4 months pregnant!" That's all she said, just like "I was really scared and had no clue how far along I was." She told me she was having dreams about going into labor and never having actually seen the doctor at all prior to. I don't keep a log of when we have sex but yeah I'm sure we had sex around that time. This is a pretty new relationship still, so it's happening pretty frequently. I'm sure it happened many times right around whenever she would have conceived. I'm supposed to be going to her next doctor's appointment with her. + She said she was feeling nauseous and dizzy, her boobs hurt really bad and felt different to her, and she couldn't remember exactly when her last period was. She hadn't missed her period for 4 months, but she was just being paranoid about possibly being that pregnant. OOP responds to a comment about having a child is a big deal OOP: I 100% agree that a kid if a huge deal, which is why I was already sort of spiraling and feeling unsure about everything even before I found out about her age. I take it very seriously and honestly don't really think that a year's long relationship, even without big lies involved, is the ideal circumstance to bring a child into. Yeah before I learned the truth about her age I felt like this relationship could really turn into something much more long term but it's also not as if I was planning to propose next month. We were nowhere near there yet. I'm also an adult and I'll take responsibility for my child if one is born. I'm not going to not be there if that happens. Commenter 5: The only way to move forward is as coparents, but not romantic partners. I would make that very clear to her that you will be raising you child, but she has proven she is not the romantic partner you are looking for. You two will not be moving in together, but you will be working through the court to sort out custody. Be very firm about that. Strip away the fantasy that this is going to turn out any other way. If you make all that clear, more truths might come out...like the fact she isn't actually pregnant. Or more likely, she will say she miscarried when you tell her you are not going to be in a relationship with her...which to me always reads as she wasn't likely pregnant in the first place. Either way, be firm. Prepare to be a dad coparenting with a pathological liar, but I honestly think if you firmly make it clear that you guys are over and now strictly coparents, then she is going to try and rope someone else in...look up the gray rock technique and use that. Don't give her any room to try and manipulate you. And if a baby is born, get a paternity test. Tell her you will be getting one through the courts. When she cries that you don't trust her, tell her you don't. If she is willing to lie about her age, which was such a dumb but major thing to lie about, then she can lie about anything. There is no trust. OOP: Thank you for the genuinely good advice. I don't know if I'm going to take it yet, but thanks. OOP's location OOP: We're in the US OOP on if he loves his GF OOP: I do love her, or did, but have a harder time actually feeling that after finding out she's been lying to me. It wasn't like I was planning to propose next month, but I was feeling like this relationship had the potential to become a much longer term, serious thing and we were talking about her moving in with me at the end of the summer when he lease is up. OOP explains more about his ideal relationships and the age gap when dating OOP: I normally date women 0-2 years from my own age, so anything that felt a little different to me I figured was because I thought she was 25 when we started dating, which was still 5 years younger than me. I'm not trying to be that creep who says sometimes girls just act more mature for their age, but I don't think that every 22-23 year old acts exactly the same and she did seem mature enough. I admit that maybe I am too hung up on the actual number, but I wouldn't knowingly start a relationship with a 22 year old at age 30 because that just doesn't feel right to me. Whether she acts more mature than her age or not, I just know there's still an inherit difference in our experience. Not to mention, many other people also find that gross too. Like I said though, I still like everything I liked about her before, so what does it really change about her? But then there's the whole lie she kept up for a year. It feels like shit knowing you've been lied to and that there have been a lot of micro lies thrown in, like celebrating her 26th birthday, the year she graduated, things like that. It's not like those lies were huge and cause damaged or anything, but it's not a great feeling and it does make me wonder about what other stupid little things she's told me were real and what weren't. Update: June 8, 2026 (1.5 weeks later) Update - My (31M) pregnant girlfriend (23F) has been lying about her age for our entire relationship. Is there any way for me to trust her again? Quick recap for people who didn't read the original post: I'm 31 and up until a few weeks ago I thought my girlfriend was 26. We've been together for a little over a year and she's currently pregnant. I recently discovered she's actually 23 and was 22 when we met. She had been lying about her age the entire time. She had a doctor appointment today and I went along. She had already invited me before her real age came out and I started doubting everything else she had told me. She's actually pregnant. According to her doctor, she's 12 weeks, 1 day pregnant, which lines up with what she told me before. Her due date is really Dec. 20. They didn't do an ultrasound today. Apparently there's an optional one that can be done around this point to look for abnormalities, but she doesn't have any risk factors, so her insurance doesn't cover it. It turns out she's actually still on her parents' insurance. I was also able to have a much more serious conversation with her about the age lie. I tried to explain that the issue isn't really the number itself at this point. At first, I was very focused on the number because many people will think it's gross and they won't know or believe that I didn't really know her age for an entire year. Now it's really just that she maintained the lie for over a year. She let me believe she was older when we met, celebrated a fake birthday, and made up all these little micro lies to go along with the fake age, including when she graduated, etc. I want her to realize why I can't believe anything she tells me now. I don't want to doubt her and I'm not one that's going to be having sex with somebody and immediately jump to "you're baby trapping me." I hate when guys do that. I just can't believe anything, no matter how big or small. She tells me her favorite ice cream is chocolate, and I'm convinced that's a lie! She said she understands. She was only thinking about the present when she told me she was 25 and didn't think long term. She didn't know how to get out of the lie, and she realized she'd eventually have to tell me, but she couldn't figure out how. Hmm, maybe just being honest and saying all of that without me having to find out the truth from overhearing her conversation with her mom. She says she understands why I have trouble trusting her now and that she's willing to do whatever it takes to prove she isn't lying about anything else. I asked her to just come clean with anything that I don't know. Now's her chance. She told me this isn't the first time she's been pregnant. When she was 19 and in college, she got pregnant after a one night stand. She took Plan B the next morning, but it didn't work, and she had an abortion shortly afterward. She said one of the reasons she's struggling so much with this pregnancy is that she doesn't want to be someone who has multiple abortions. She told me she's embarrassed that she's had 2 unintentional pregnancies and feels a lot of shame about it. She also insists she didn't get pregnant on purpose and that she doesn't really want to be pregnant now, but she wasn't as shocked to find out she was pregnant as she originally claimed to be. She wasn't using her birth control ring perfectly. She told me there were times when she forgot to replace it on schedule and sometimes wouldn't put a new one in until a day or two after she was supposed to. So while she was technically using birth control, she wasn't always using it correctly. She had been telling me she had absolutely no idea she could be pregnant and was panicking because she didn't know whether she was six weeks pregnant or four months pregnant. The truth is that before she ever took the pregnancy test, she was already worried she might be pregnant because she knew she had messed up her birth control schedule. So if I'm counting correctly, that's at least two more lies. Her explanation for both was basically embarrassment. She said she didn't want to admit that she had made mistakes and that the pregnancy might have happened because she screwed up. On one hand, I can see how what she's saying could all be true. I genuinely think she lied about her age, and it went on too long and she didn't know how to get out of it. Doesn't make it right, but I don't think there's any deeper reason for why she did it. I feel better knowing she's actually pregnant, yet not better all at the same time. Just glad to know she wasn't lying about being pregnant because that would be entering deranged territory. Her real age doesn't even change all of the things I really like about her. I don't think she's some evil mastermind who has been plotting to trap me. I'm doing okay for myself, but there are better men out there to trap. What I see is someone who seems willing to lie when she's scared, embarrassed, or worried about how she'll be perceived. The problem is that those are exactly the situations where honesty matters most. I still care about her. Finding out she's 23 instead of 26 didn't suddenly make me stop caring about her as a person. Now she seems pretty set on having this baby and I'm not one of those stay together for the kids type of people, but I keep thinking that if all of this stuff about her age hadn't come up, I wouldn't be making moves to leave her. Our relationship had been great and had already been moving towards getting more serious before any of this happened. I guess now I'm trying to figure out whether this is a person who made one bad decision that snowballed out of control or if dishonesty is simply how she deals with difficult situations. At this point, I'm less interested in whether her lies were understandable and more interested in what I should be looking for going forward. If someone has a pattern of lying when they're embarrassed, scared, or worried about being judged, what signs indicate they're actually working on that behavior rather than just apologizing for it? I realize I might be an idiot for giving this a try and not breaking up with her immediately, but I just don't want to go into it being a completed blind, deaf, and dumb idiot. Editor's note: please note that some of OOP's responses were downvoted when providing more details Relevant Comments Commenter 1: "I don't want to be a person with two abortions" But I do want to be a person who has a child out of wedlock with a dude I just lied to constantly for several years. Not sure I buy this one... OOP: It was just a year. We've only known each other for a year. But makes me wonder who long she would have let her lie go on for....possibly years if she could have, I assume. OOP responds about the pregnancy and abortions his GF hid from him, will be in his life if they continue with the pregnancy OOP: I understand why she'd want to confirm she was actually pregnant before telling me. Honestly, that's fine with me. I also don't expect her to have told me she had an abortion years ago. It's not like I ever asked her if she had one and she said no. There was no reason for her to have mentioned it before. I don't feel like I'm owed that info. I take responsibility for her getting pregnant. It's both of our faults. I just wish she had been honest about it and not acted like she was totally shocked and had no idea how far along she could be. But I agree with you that she's going to be in my life no matter what at this point and if a baby really does come we both have to be in it together, so I guess that's another reason why I'm leaning toward not breaking up with her right now. I don't think I have much to lose right now by seeing how things go and whether she can be honest or not moving forward. Commenter 2: She admitted she doesn't really want to be pregnant now, but she doesn’t want to be a person who "has had 2 abortions." What a terrible reason to bring a life into the world. OOP: Nobody's judging her for it except herself. I tried telling her nobody needs to know. It's not like she has to wear a sign around her neck announcing it. She says she wasn't an adult the first time and she couldn't raise a baby, but now she's more of an adult and has no excuse to get an abortion. You don't need an excuse! Commenter 3: So. I am extremely skeptical about her birth control story. I have used NuvaRing in the past and have forgotten to replace it on time but it's usually not a problem. The uva ring will last for 4 weeks so I don't see how her being 2-3 days late made her pregnant unless she didn't have it in her at all. I’m not saying it's impossible, it's just really sketchy. I'd do my own research if I were you. OOP: I don't know, and there's a good chance I still don't know the full story about it. I don't know that it's worth me really going down a rabbit hole over though. She already admitted to not using it completely correctly and she's already pregnant now, so I feel like I have bigger things to worry about. I'm never relying on that ring again though. Commenter 4: Her age is really showing with all these lies and mistakes. Think of it, a 22, newly 23, year old that lies cause she doesn't realize the relationship is long term, can't tell the truth, is inconsistent with her birth control, and doesn't want to get an abortion because of her own feelings around shame. All very age appropriate and immature. The maturity from a 27 year old can be vastly different than a 22 year old. Support her decision with her body but tell her that her immature decisions have created a rift and mistrust in your relationship. If that's not a red flag for you then it should at least be cause for some serious rebuilding OOP: I agree. It was hard not to literally laugh out loud when she told me she felt like when she got pregnant at 19 she wasn't an adult and couldn't raise a baby, but now she's an adult and has less of an excuse not to go through with the pregnancy. It took everything I had to not be like "are you serious right now?" Commenter 5: First, you need to use your own form of birth control. The woman is not the only one who should bear the responsibility of using birth control. She is completely untrustworthy and you should dump her. If she goes through with the pregnancy you’ll be stuck coparenting with someone you can’t trust or you’ll have to abandon your child. OOP: I take responsibility in my part of the pregnancy. I understand that even with perfect birth control use there's still a small risk. We made the decision together the stop using condoms and to rely on her birth control only. When you make that decision as a couple and the woman agrees to take on that responsibility, she's taking on the responsibility of using their birth control effectively and communicating any possible problem to their partner. She agreed to that. I didn't just decide to stop using condoms on my own and force her to take on the sole responsibility of birth control. I also get that when we made that decision, I was putting my trust in her. Even with finding out what I know now about her not putting a new ring in right when she was supposed to, I still don't solely blame her for the pregnancy. I could have always used a condom to be extra safe. I know there are things I could have done to better guarantee that pregnancy didn't happen. Commenter 6: If she does choose to give birth, she needs to figure out beforehand how she will have health insurance coverage for her newborn since her insurance is through her parents (the policyholders). I read somewhere that a policyholder’s health insurance usually doesn’t cover the dependents of a dependent (e.g., grandchildren). Time for this 23-year-old to be an adult. Best of luck to you. OOP: She has a full time job that she could get her own benefits through. I know she's not lying about this because I've been inside and seen her desk and met her co-workers. I can also put my child on my insurance. OOP on if he is going to continue the relationship with his GF, her reasons for getting pregnant and coparenting OOP: Our relationship is essentially on pause right now. I agree that her reasons for having the baby aren't that great. I've told her that I personally don't really feel that a relationship of only 1 year, regardless of the age thing, is really the best scenario to bring a baby into it. Add the other things into it and it's definitely not ideal. I've definitely had some moments of just personally spiraling about it because this isn't how I pictured the situation of me becoming a dad and honestly the more that she says to me the more I feel like I'm having a baby with a kid. Before all of this stuff came out, I would have believed that she was somebody mature enough to handle having a baby, even if unexpected. That's how she portrayed herself. Now it's like I know the truth about her age, so she doesn't feel the need to keep up so much of an act. I've told her nobody has to know about whether she has an abortion or not or how many abortions she's ever had. I promised I wouldn't tell anyone about it. There are some people who know she's pregnant, but we could say she had a miscarriage if she wants. She doesn't like that idea and doesn't want pity and people feeling bad for her when she actually had an abortion. I don't even know how truthful the whole "I don't want to have 2 abortions" is. I'm sure she doesn't want to say she had 2 abortions, but she's said other things like she just can't get an abortion, it doesn't feel right. So my gut tells me she wants to have the baby, but she can't be honest about that and just say she wants to have the baby. I feel like she's scared to say it. Instead, she has to have all of these reasons why she just can't have any abortion. It's hard because I feel sort of stuck between being honest about how I feel while also not being the asshole who forces her into something she doesn't want to do. I don't want to be that person. + It basically is on pause now. I told her I would support her in whatever decision she makes and obviously went to the appointment (partly because I needed to know the truth, but I also want to be involved if this is really happening). I'm not ready for our relationship to go back to what it had been though. Luckily we don't live together. She normally spends a ton of time and most nights at my place and was actually supposed to move in with me in August. She has not been staying here lately. OOP on his GF's ultrasounds OOP: Her insurance covers routine ultrasounds. It doesn't cover the one that's used for screening for abnormalities around 12 weeks. It only covers that one if she has risk factors like being over 35 or having a family history of certain conditions. We were told if the blood test shows anything abnormal that would require further investigation, then her insurance will likely cover further testing and ultrasounds. She had an ultrasound when she was a little over 7 weeks. She said she had no clue how far along she was, so it was done to determine that. She has pictures from it. She's supposed to have another one around 20 weeks, which would be the first one I'd be able to attend. OOP on asking for a paternity test OOP: Yeah and I think I’ll ask for one. I do believe it’s mine but it’s too important to not be 100% sure about. 🧱Breaking down the vibe-coding wall
TL;DR: You’ve hit the vibe-coding wall. Reverse engineer, refactor, refine, and replace what’s broken - one piece at a time. We’ve been there. You’re in the flow of generating code with your coding assistant, and you realize you’ve hit the wall. The review is taking longer than the actual building – how can you regain control? https://preview.redd.it/opzuv287av6h1.png?width=1474&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea1f470f5d2701d5eff588d56de9f70af899acff If you’ve gotten to this point, you know that adding engineering rigor to a codebase that has lost its way is difficult. Maybe you’ve fallen out of alignment. Perhaps your coding agent isn’t delivering exactly what you want or is missing context. I’m Rynne, Lead AI Ecosystem Engineer at IBM, and I’m here to talk about some best practices for fixing code that’s grown into a disaster using IBM Bob. 👇 Step 1: Reverse engineer Find the current state of the code base. Use “ask” mode in IBM Bob or simply prompt your agent for hotspots. Doing a dedicated review pass (with either the same or a different LLM) is also a powerful tool. If you’re not using it yet, "git-bisect" is an incredible tool for finding the exact point where something went off the rails. It does a binary search through git history to find the commit that broke things. 💡Pro tip: Spin up a spike if you’re not sure how you want to tackle something! Spikes are self-contained pieces of throwaway work that answer a question – don’t be afraid to throw that code away. The answer is the goal at this point. Step 2: Refactor Plan out your changes – and we’re going to really retake ownership in this step. As we make the plan for our refactor, make sure that what it’s proposing is the way we want to go. There’s a lot of ways to make sure you understand and are aligned with the plan – one of my favorites is the "grill-me" skill, where the agent will interview you and get on the same page. Implementing those changes starts with one critical thing: a goal. 🎯Whether test or benchmark, understanding how you validate the change is how you know you’ve gotten to the desired behavior. Break it into manageable pieces. Lift and shift pieces one at a time. Verify API contracts and accomplish the goal before you move to the next piece. Patterns like the Strangler Fig can be very helpful here. Spinning up new tasks or context windows is an excellent way to keep your context on track. Having a detailed spec can be useful here to help you clear out some of that exploratory work. Step 3: Refine As you firm up pieces, the key here is to keep it from happening again. 🌶️Hot take: strongly consider linters and type systems. I personally consider them basically mandatory at this point when working with AI – it helps my agent notice when it’s gotten off track much earlier. IBM Bob will also showcase errors from these in the “Bob Findings” section of review, which can be a useful place to look for potential issues. Step 4: Replace what’s broken “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to >take away.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Make sure the validation stays clean, but keeping the old (broken) stuff in there is an easy way to confuse your context. Clean up! 🧹 --- 💬Have more tips or questions? Join the AMA! Have more tips on breaking the vibe-coding wall? Have questions about encouraging AI tool adoption in your enterprise? Good bye to my bestest boy, Wookie.
Its been 4 hours since i said goodbye to our beloved cat Wookie (Chonkers, Wookie-bear, Sir Catington, and many more nick names). I’m sitting here waiting to call into work as i havent slept yet and i need to type it out. Cant post anywhere else till we get a chance to make some calls when family wakes up. He is that well loved in our family. Hes made non cat people adopt. Wookie was 2 when he came into our lives. My husband and i were at pet value getting litter. Well he was getting litter for our other cat Salem. I was playing with the kitties through the window. This particular ball of fluff was having fun with me when a worker came to me and told me his story. He came in with his mom and siblings. I can’t remember how long he was there for but his mom and siblings were long adopted. Except him, because no one likes the fact he doesn’t like to be picked up. He acts like a fish on land when you try. She pulled on my heart strings. Im a bleeding heart and felt so bad for him, and had to convinced my husband we need to take him. Bought a cat carrier and about an hour of fighting to get him in it. He was ours. That was 13 years ago. He was the bestest boy. He loved belly rubs and warm laps from anyone. He squeaked when he wanted something. Had the Barry White of purrs. Had his own spot at the dinner table bench. But was still a drama queen when you tried to pick him up. My husband was the only person that was sorta able to carry him. Of course the one who didnt want another cat was the one who ended up being his best buddy. He was 15. And recently we noticed he was limping, moving slower etc we made him an appointment to his usual vet. It was supposed to be tomorrow. Last night we found him breathing heavy with his mouth open. We called an emergency vet and they saw him right away. They put Wookie in an oxygen tank immediately. After 2 hours he was not improving. We made the hardest decision of our lives this morning. We got to be with him for a while. He even purred while having the oxygen mask. My husband held him till the end, and in an instant he was gone. We stayed with him for over an hour afterwards. Wrapped up him in the blankets they had and said goodbye. It was so hard to leave the building without him. It stills feel wrong to have left him behind. We miss him so damn much. Everything so raw still. Hopefully wont be too long till we get his ashes home. I have another hour before i can call work and another hour after before i call his vet. I miss you buddy. Im sorry you went through all that. Im sorry the rest of the world didnt get to know you. Edit: that last picture was the one I texted my husband when we were at pet value, telling him we need to save this guy. Can’t believe i still had it. Edit#2: My husband and I want to thank everyone in this wonderful community for all your kind words and sharing your own stories. We read through them all. Its really helped us get through this day. We cried and we smiled and even laughed a little. Which we didn’t think we could do today. Anyone else who may see this and is going through the same know you’re not alone. And remember the blessing that it was to have had them in your life. And please remember to eat ❤️ take care of yourself too. submitted by /u/Veriera to r/cats [link] [comments]

Found out my ex is doing terribly
TW: abuse Lemon chicken thigh Caesar salad. Lunch with mom, where this conversation happened… My ex and I technically broke up in 2017 after two years together but he strung me along until 2019 and I finally realised my worth when he tried to see me at the start of 2020 (I know, yikes). He was my first “proper” relationship which is my only reasoning for sticking around so long - I didn’t know that men WEREN’T supposed to treat you that way. He cheated on me constantly (I found most of this out later), spoke to me terribly, gaslit me before I knew that’s what it was, constantly berated my appearance and weight, wouldn’t allow me to have male friends at first then it became an issue if I went out or had friends at all, picked a fight if I posted on social media, lied non-stop, didn’t respect me as a woman nor as a person in general… the list goes on. He never laid a hand on me but things were thrown and walls were punched - I’m sure if we moved in together it wouldn’t have taken him long. All in all, he was awful. Anyway, my mom and stepdad know his parents and they see them maybe once or twice a year. Over our girls’ lunch he came up in conversation, which is a rarity as my mum knows how terrible he was and honestly I don’t think about him ever nowadays. It turns out karma really came to get him - he’s single, still living with his parents, unemployed, doesn’t drive and therefore can’t get a job as he works in trades. His mum was complaining to mine that he’s not doing anything with his life, and even his friends don’t want anything to do with him anymore. Meanwhile, I’m truly so happy with my life. I bought my first house last year with my partner of almost 6 years - who is everything you could ever want in a man. We’ve recently adopted a rescue dog who I adore. I see friends at least once a week. My career is doing great and I’m slowly building up a side business too. I regularly think to myself “I can’t believe this is my life”. Like I say, I don’t think or care about my ex at all now but a teeny part of me was happy to hear his life isn’t going so great considering how awfully he treats women. (If you’re in his position I mean no offence - this is a terrible person who deserves terrible things!) submitted by /u/Inevitable-Delay-500 to r/GirlDinnerDiaries [link] [comments]

WIBTA if I stopped letting my friend borrow my dog for dates after she started calling him "our dog"?
I'm 29F and I have a dog, Milo. He's a 4-year-old mixed breed rescue, about 45 lbs, very friendly, very photogenic, and honestly the best thing in my life. I adopted him when he was 10 months old. I pay for his food, vet bills, daycare when needed, insurance, everything. He is 100% my dog. My close friend "Lauren" is 30F. She lives in a building that doesn't allow pets, but she loves dogs and has always been great with Milo. About six months ago, she got out of a long relationship and started dating again. She was really nervous about dating apps and first dates, so one day she joked that walking Milo would make her seem more approachable. I didn't mind at first. She would ask to take him to the park or on a walk before a coffee date. Milo loves walks, Lauren is responsible, and I trusted her. It actually seemed good for everyone. She got a confidence boost, Milo got extra attention, and I got a quiet hour or two. Then it slowly became weird. First, she added photos with Milo to her dating profiles. That didn't bother me too much until I saw her profile said something like, "Dog mom to the sweetest rescue boy." I told her that made it sound like Milo was her dog. She laughed and said, "It's not that serious, everyone exaggerates a little on apps." Then she started telling dates "we rescued him." I only found this out because I ran into her at a dog-friendly brewery with Milo, and the guy she was with said, "Oh, this must be the dog you two rescued together." I corrected him and said, "I adopted him, Lauren just borrows him sometimes." It was awkward, but I thought that would be the end of it. It was not. She started referring to him as "our dog" in casual conversation. Like, "We should get Milo a new raincoat," or "Our dog hates that brand of treats," or "I told Mark our dog is picky about men." I pushed back a few times and she would say, "You know what I mean," or "I'm just joking." A couple weeks ago, she asked if she could take Milo on a Saturday afternoon because she had a second date with a guy who also loved dogs. I said yes, but told her I needed him back by 6 because I had plans. At 5:30 she texted asking if she could keep him longer because they were having a great time at a park. I said no, I needed him home. She brought him back at almost 7:30 and acted like I was being uptight because "Milo was having fun." That annoyed me, but what really pushed me over the edge happened this past weekend. Lauren posted an Instagram story of Milo wearing a little bandana I bought him. The caption said: "Co-parenting this angel until I can get my own place 🥹🐾." A guy she's been seeing commented something like, "Best stepdad audition ever," and she reposted it with laughing emojis. I texted her and said the "co-parenting" thing made me uncomfortable and I wanted her to stop implying Milo was partly hers. She called me and said I was being possessive over a dog who clearly loves her. She said I know she can't have a dog in her apartment, and spending time with Milo has been helping her feel less lonely after her breakup. She also said I had no problem with her borrowing him when it was convenient for me, but now that she's bonded with him I'm "pulling rank." I told her that borrowing Milo for walks is not the same thing as building part of her dating identity around him. She said I was making it sound creepy when it was harmless. She also said Milo is happier when he has "more people who love him," and that I'm acting like love for a dog is a limited resource. Yesterday she asked if she could take him again this Friday because she has another date and "Milo is kind of part of the plan." I said I was thinking about stopping the borrowing altogether, at least for dates. She got really upset and said I was punishing her for loving my dog. She said she has bought him treats, taken him to the park, helped me when I was sick last year by walking him, and that I'm being controlling. A mutual friend said Lauren definitely overstepped with the "our dog" stuff, but that completely cutting her off might be harsh because Milo does love her and she hasn't actually neglected or harmed him. I don't want to be cruel. I know Lauren is lonely, and I know Milo enjoys seeing her. But I'm starting to feel like she's using my dog as a prop for dating and also emotionally blurring the lines in a way I don't like. So, WIBTA if I stopped letting my friend borrow my dog for dates after she started calling him "our dog"? submitted by /u/mulosapiba424 to r/WIBTA_AITA [link] [comments]

Dragon desperately needs a home. I am getting so worried.
UPDATE 5/20 Dragon was successfully taken in by the Tree House Humane Society in Chicago, by u/Cattypali. Dragon will receive medical care there and be neutered as well. u/Cattypali and her partner plan to visit Dragon (and maybe adopt) when he has recovered. Either way, Dragon is now safe with a wonderful organization who can give him love, attention, medical care, and patiently wait for the right adopter. Thank you to everyone who made this happen. ❤️ u/Cattypali has also posted a more in depth (and heartwarming) update on her profile. UPDATE 5/17: Dragon has arrived in Chicago and is staying with [u/Cattypali](u/Cattypali) for a few days until the rescue can take him in. He is a big city cat now!! Thank you so much [u/Cyanidesuicideml](u/Cyanidesuicideml) for getting him there. And a huge thank you to [u/Cattypali](u/Cattypali) for making all of this possible. Not only has she taken Dragon into her home but she is also the reason Dragon was able to get into this rescue so quickly. Dragon desperately needed out of my garage (today is literally 85!!) and now has a new chance at a real home. ❤️ UPDATE 5/16: [u/Cyanidesuicideml](u/Cyanidesuicideml) and her son have picked Dragon up and started transport. She is truly an incredible person and her son is awesome. I know Dragon will be in good hands with them. ❤️ She has posted an update on her profile. UPDATE 5/15: [u/Cyanidesuicideml](u/Cyanidesuicideml) will be transporting Dragon. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! If you want to help them with gas money send them a DM. They are making a 13 hour round trip for Dragon. HUGE shoutout to [u/Cattypali](u/Cattypali) who vouched for Dragon and made it possible for him to get into the rescue this weekend before it starts getting hot in the garage!! It really is such an answered prayer. I didn’t know how any of this would be possible and yet it’s all happening. Thank you so so much!! UPDATE 5/15: A rescue organization in Chicago has a spot for Dragon and we are working on arranging transportation for him. As long as he passes intake stuff, he will go to a cat cafe to be up for adoption. They understand cats with his condition take longer to be adopted. I really cannot thank everyone here enough for the outpouring support and advice. This absolutely could not have even been a possibility without everyone’s help. Every single comment and interaction got Dragon into the eyes of the right people who could help. It has truly been such an emotional roller coaster. Meeting Dragon years ago, building his trust, him finally letting us help him, and now a chance for him to finally have a home where he can be safe, loved, and have some peace. I will keep updating if anything else happens, but I am so thankful and optimistic. Dragon is such a sweet soul and I know he will make an amazing companion for someone. And maybe someone out there needs Dragon just as much as Dragon needs them. ❤️ Location: Allen County, IN (Last picture is how he looked summer before recent attack. He is cute, just in rough shape atm.) TLDR. Sweet stray cat with feline leukemia needs home. Living in my garage, husband has allergies, can’t keep. 7 rescues contacted, haven’t heard back. Only place who will take him will euthanize due to diagnosis. I desperately need help. (Not financial.) I hate posting like this but I don’t know what to do. I need to find someone to take Dragon. Whether it be a foster, rescue, or hopefully someone who wants to keep him forever. Dragon was a stray I wanted to make a community cat. He was routinely attacked by other cats and after a rough attack let me help him. In the process of trying to TNR he was diagnosed with Feline Leukemia - so he cannot be a community cat anymore. My husband has severe allergies to cats. We’ve been keeping Dragon in our garage for the time being. Our furnace is in the garage and when we turn it on, cat smells come through the vents. So we have to keep it off. It’s not sustainable as the weather is getting more intense. Dragon is really thriving in the garage, it’s actually crazy to me. He doesn’t seem to need a lot. He just seems so happy to have a safe place with food, water, and a comfy place to rest. He is litter box trained with no accidents. He enjoys being pet and brushed (will purr up a storm) and then he will walk away and stare at you when he’s had enough attention. His favorite spot is a wheelbarrow with a comforter inside. I’ve reached out to about 7 different rescues, posted on FB, paid for an online adoption profile for him, and the only one who can take him is Animal Control - who will euthanize him due to his feline leukemia. If you know anyone else I can reach out to or think he may be a good fit for you, or just have questions please let me know. Words of support or advice are also welcome. I am starting to feel so nervous. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. submitted by /u/bananananannanaa to r/cats [link] [comments]

House Cloning needs to stop
These pictures are from the Adopt me server on the house trading channel and this has been an issue for ages but honestly it really sucks to see the entire page absolutely full of people trading pages upon pages of cloned builds. I know people have been cloning builds for ages but what I don't understand is how this isn't taken more seriously when, in my opinion, its such a blatant scam. If it was any other in game item that was being copied and duplicated, it would be a SCAM. This is somehow worse as it could easily be considered art theft as well because the original creator of any of these builds is not credited, compensated or even known! So why is every online space for adopt me builders polluted with these people. They spam their cloned house messages over and over again and actual builders who worked hard on their houses and are trying to trade it get buried. I get that its really hard to police this in game because of the use of external scripts but at the very least can we make this less normalized by banning these kinds of posts online. Take them down. Stop letting other people get away with stealing another persons work for profit! I'm also not talking about people trading away a house that they didn't build themselves but they traded for. An item being in circulation is just normal part of trading. I'm only talking about these people who are trading 20+ builds at a time and admit to them being cloned which means using scripts and is against the TOS. THIS IS BANNABLE. Why is it so normal in this community! Another suggestion I can think of that would maybe help a little is credited the original builder. If houses came with a tag or a watermark or something on the mailbox maybe or in the actual house menu that just showed the username of the person who built it/bought the origional house. This might help??? At least it would allow the original builder to take some credit and also stop the people lying about having made a house themselves. submitted by /u/Status_Ad_3522 to r/AdoptMeRBX [link] [comments]

AITAH for not being excited my sister is having a new baby when I still have custody of her first child?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Square_Phone_8468 Originally posted to r/AITAH AITAH for not being excited my sister is having a new baby when I still have custody of her first child? Trigger Warnings: emotional manipulation, alcoholism, child neglect / abandonment Original Post: April 4, 2026 Yes, I’m on a throwaway, I have people I know on my actual account, and I really don’t talk about this with friends, hence the 3rd party opinions. My sister Val is an alcoholic. Or was an alcoholic, idk the terminology. She has been on and off since she was 18. Her drinking made her a neglectful parent. I won’t go into it but it eventually social services stepped in and I ended up fostering my nephew Danny, who was 6 at the time. When we took custody, Val made almost no effort to see Danny. She missed scheduled visits, even in the brief periods she was clean after being sent to rehab. Danny grew very resentful and when she did stick to visits he would refuse to speak to her, which would drive her into another bender/spiral/relapse. After 2 years of fostering my husband and I were given full legal guardianship, which Val voluntarily gave us. Danny is now 11, and Val isn’t in his life which he says is what he wants. Val has been sober for 2 years, and only ever asks how Danny is when she speaks to me, she makes no effort to contact him. I have never really said much to her about it because Danny is a happy kid, and I think we’re good parents to him, and I don’t want Val to start contacting him out of obligation and end up hurting him. She’s basically just an uninvolved aunt to him. But earlier this week, Val announced on a family group call that she’s pregnant. And I couldn’t even fake being pleased. My stomach just dropped. She’s over there grinning, talking about a nursery while next door to me is the bedroom of the kid she discarded? It’s one thing to hold your hands up and say you’re not capable of being a mother, but to just decide you can’t be bothered to do the work of repairing the relationship with the child you already have so you just have a new one? I guess I didn’t look happy on the video because everyone asked what my issue was. I just said nothing, and not to worry because I’ll let the child she didn’t want know about the one that she did. Val got really upset and her boyfriend got mad at me and the call ended shortly after. My mum says I owe Val an apology. She asked if I thought she should take Danny back or if I resented having him. To be clear, I couldn’t love that boy more if he came out of me, and no I don’t think he should live with Val. My mum’s point is if I think things should stay the way they are then I shouldn’t begrudge Val for still wanting to be a mother to someone, and that considering there’s nothing she could do right in this situation, I should find it in my heart to be happy she’s healthy and finding happiness. My dad agrees with me that she’s making a bad decision having another child but mainly because he feels she’s not stable, not because of Danny. He says Danny is my son now and I shouldn’t see it as him being re-abandoned when he’s in the best place for him. I just feel like it’s so wrong of Val to try and start fresh like she doesn’t already have a child out there that she never even tried with. It seems like she just wants everything the easy way. I’m just so angry that she thinks she doesn’t have to take responsibility for the hurt she caused, she can just start the cycle again as if Danny was the first pancake. Am I really the AH for not seeing this as a positive thing? AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP was NTA Editor’s note: OOP made lots of comments that provided more details, I am listing common questions and responses Relevant Comments Commenter 1: NTA. I have a sister like her, who now has 3 kids to 3 different dads. None are involved, my mother basically raised the kids until she died. Once my mum died, sister spiraled and tried to move in with my dad. Is she stable now? I don’t understand your Mum’s point. Why would you take this as thinking your sister needed to take her kid back? My first thought would be worry you’d end up with a second child to take care of. OOP: She says she’s stable. Who really knows. I don’t see her much. To my knowledge she is sober, I’ve seen no markers of a relapse, so I’m taking her at her word. Emotionally stable? Idk if she’s ever been that. My mum’s point is that I don’t want her to take back the son she has, and I’m not happy she’s having a baby, so she’s like, do you think she just doesn’t deserve to be a mother and be punished the rest of her life. And I get what my mum means but at the same time, I just don’t know how Val sleeps at night, or expected that just because she gets to forget about her kid that I do too? Commenter 2: Your mum seems to forget that Danny has feelings too. I can only imagine how he's going to feel when he finds out that he was the practice run. OOP: I think she doesn’t understand the depth of what he’s gone through. Whenever she sees him, he’s in a great mood, when we talk about him I’m talking about his awards at school, etc. She has a bit of a rose coloured view of it all I think. She’s a very “all’s well that ends well” kind of person, not really a deep thinker. Commenter 3: How would you feel if she went into therapy and so did Danny so that they could build some kind of relationship, but not including her being his parent as you are CLEARLY now his parent? If she put in that kind of work, is that what you're looking for? It seems to me your problem is that she has put in absolutely no effort whatsoever with her first child. NTA. OOP: Danny doesn’t want a relationship with her, and we respect that. From our side the door is open if he ever does but Val has put in so little effort over the years it doesn’t seem like she’s interested, despite her randomly saying she is sometimes and not following through. You’ve nailed it though, I don’t know what I’m looking for. I would have been looking for her to be on freaking contraception. Because how tf do you already have a child that you ab*sed and think “oh well that one didn’t work out guess I’ll go again” OOP on if she is going to take in Danny's sibling for Val OOP: We’re not taking in another child. It’s a hard no. She’s on her own this time OOP on what she wants Val to do in order to make things right between her and Val? OOP: I want her to have been on birth control. I want her to have taken a good look at the mess she made and say to herself “I hate no right to make it worse”. So no, she can’t make this right with me. My mother is correct about that part. I don’t resent having Danny. But I resent that she washed her hands off him, and acts like he doesn’t mean anything to her now because he has a tainted image of her. This new baby is going to come into the world now knowing who she is and what she did, and that’s what she really wants. She doesn’t want to deal with what she did, she doesn’t want the kid who sees her as she is. And I hate that she thinks she can just start again. What does that say to Danny? “I broke you but now I want something not broken”. That’s not growth, in my book. OOP explains more about if Danny wants to connect with Val and his experiences OOP: It’s been difficult, because he was young back then. He’d cry when she called, run away from the phone. On the rare occasion she kept a visit he would hide behind me, so we stopped being there for visits, the social worker said he would sit with his back to her not speaking. The last couple of years he doesn’t like to talk about her at all. He just says she’s nobody and not important. We got told by his last therapist that we just had to accept that was where he was at right now and not expect that he perform big feelings that he might not consciously have at the moment. I don’t know how you regain the trust of a child when you’ve repeatedly proven they can’t trust you. I’m not one to give him any advice I wouldn’t even trust Val to water my plants. But no, she’s never asked. She’s respecting his space, I guess. Or maybe the fact that he doesn’t want to talk to her is the green light for her to pretend she’s the victim, idk. + She sends cards, no gifts, for holidays and birthdays. She used to call for birthdays but he started refusing to speak to her and she stopped trying. She doesn’t have his phone number, never gets in contact or asks. And he never asks about her. Commenter 5: No matter how much Danny is loved by you, he will always have the anguish of being abandoned and replaced. I say this because he knows his mother gave birth to him. And now the love that she was supposed to give to him, she's given to someone new. I think I would talk to him seriously. Let him know that this is not the case. And if you truly love him, I would adopt him so he has an actual mother. Not just a legal guardian, but a mother that he knows will never leave. That may help him cope. OOP: I know that’s true. And what makes it worse if that he remembers living with her. When we first got him, he would cry and cry for her. For someone who didn’t even bother to feed him most days. It was only after living with us for a while that he realised how abnormal that was, and got angry with her. He says he doesn’t remember anything good about her, I don’t know if that’s true. But he knows she didn’t care, and I’m sure that hurts him and probably will for his whole life. OOP on Val's background growing up OOP: My mum isn’t an idiot. She’s just a bleeding heart. She’s not Val’s bio mum, and Val went through a lot with her actual mother. My mum has always just been a bit of a light touch with her. Especially because my mum is one of those people whose greatest joy has always been being a mother, so she doesn’t like to admit some people just aren’t cut out for it. Commenter 5: NTA. You are protecting who your family is failing. Your sister needs psychological help clearly, and your mom might too. “Can’t blame her for wanting to be a mother to someone” just say you don’t like your grandchild holy fuck. Side point: The fact that people who get kids taken away/lost custody and do nothing to improve it or get them back are allowed to keep having more will never ever make sense to me. Edit because I’m actually so mad at your parents: your dad sucks too. Sorry. The child absolutely will see it as being abandoned again. Please go low contact with the family for the sake of Danny and get him a therapist now to help process the sibling situation OOP: My parents have been good parents to me, and they’re great grandparents to my children, I’m not going to cut them off. They love Danny and my daughter, and I think they did a good job with me. But yeah I don’t know what’s going to happen with Val’s child. I’m taking myself out of that equation, I’m not going through all that again. I paid for her rehab twice and yes she’s sober but on a personal level it seems like she’s learnt nothing. Commenter 6: Is your guardianship reversable? Because honestly with their reaction and your mother asking about it - you need to consult an attorney and tread softly with your sister and boyfriend. Unless you are getting funding that lets you support him - you may want to consider legal adoption depending on the laws where you live. Where is Danny's biological father? Do you know your sister's boyfriend well? Will he be able to care for the child if she spirals again? OOP: Only by a judge. And she’s not winning that case. We live a plane ride away, Danny is happy, thriving, in private school, and hasn’t spoken to Val in years. No judge is going to grant her custody, especially when she voluntarily signed him over. We’d keep her in court till the next kid was in university. Commenter 7: INFO: you mentioned that your sister is two years sober. How is she in other aspects of her life? Does she have a job? A stable relationship? OOP: She has a job, she has a boyfriend, the father of the new child. I don’t like the guy I think he’s an emotional vampire but he’s a teacher, so he’s gainfully employed. Update: April 14, 2026 (10 days later) Update - AITAH for not being excited my sister is having a new baby when I still have custody of her first? Hi. I noticed a lot of people either DMd me asking for updates or put the “update me” thing in the comments, so I thought I would come and post one. I was really touched by people sharing their personal experiences in the comments as well, so I just wanted to respect that by providing closure on this? If you would consider this closure. Anyway, onto the update. First, my husband told Danny about the baby. They went out for a boys day on Saturday and they talked about it. I won’t share too much about it, but he took it pretty well all things considered. We do think we will book a few sessions with a therapist for him, but we want the dust to settle a little bit. Danny opens up easier when he’s had some time to himself to think about things first so we’re going to give a couple of weeks. But he’s doing well for now. Next, I spoke to my mum. A lot of people were quite harsh on her which I don’t think was deserved, but I did feel like we needed to have a conversation. My mother is the kindest and most forgiving person on the planet, and I love that about her. The same way I saw what Danny went through, she saw what Val went through with her birth mother. I look at Danny and see a scared little 6 year old. My mum looks at Val and sees a traumatized teenager. So she has a different perspective. She’s pretty “all’s well that ends well” in mindset, she always has been, she likes happy endings. In her mind this is one. But she understands that she came across really flippant about what Danny went through and she does feel bad about it in hindsight. She adores Danny so me laying it out for her all over again really affected her and she saw where I was coming from being upset. She did say she still hopes that Val is a better mother to her new baby, and at least we can both agree on that. Finally I spoke to Val. She apologised for not telling my beforehand but said she felt like she needed the support of having our parents there because she was nervous to tell me, and felt if we were all on the call it might feel a bit more like a normal, joyful occasion, but she said she knew she should have spoken to me separately. She said she will always regret the things she did while not sober and she doesn’t think Danny should ever forgive her, but she always wanted to be a mother, and she finally feels like she will be a good one now. I was listening to all this thinking I was just going to leave things where they were and stop reaching out. But then she basically said after everything, don’t I want her to be happy? And here’s where I have to admit to maybe being a bad person, but viscerally, I wanted to answer no. And I realised the answer is actually no, I don’t want Val to be happy. I want her to be sober, and healthy, and I guess to have moments of happiness. But when I think of her living a happy life, I know that isn’t what i would choose for her. I know that makes me a bad person, and I’m actually ok with that. People can judge Me I don’t care. Because they didn’t have to walk into some dingy government building and see a child with bones sticking out of his t-shirt, scared of every loud noise, and take him home and watch him hide cold fries under his mattress in case there wasn’t food to eat tomorrow. They didn’t have to teach a 6 year old the alphabet. They didn’t have to look at him crying for his mother and figure out how to tell him you don’t know where she is, thinking to yourself how sad it is she’s all he cares about when she’s somewhere not giving a crap what’s happening to him. The worst things Val ever did, she did to someone I love beyond measure, and it’s not for me to decide who deserves to be happy, but I can’t say I hope she is. Obviously I didn’t have all this clarity during the phone call, but I did have enough to be honest and say my family and I were not in a place where it would be possible to engage with her anymore. She didn’t take this well, and a lot of stuff she’s been hanging onto came up. Like how I should have tried harder to get Danny to talk to her, how she felt I wasn’t present enough when she had Danny, all stuff from years ago. She called me spitefully, and her boyfriend later sent me a message saying the same, but it had to be done. I don’t want to be in this toxic cycle of actively wishing someone doesn’t have the life they want and keeping them in my life just to stir this up every few weeks. It’s too much bad energy being put out there. I ended up blocking both Val and her bf. I let my parents know that we’ll have to do separate holidays and functions from now on, and they were very understanding. I’m happy to give Val priority on stuff with her dad’s side of the family and she can do the same with my mum’s and that’s that. My parents also promised not to give updates unless asked, to either side. I’m not really sure if I’d say this is a happy update. But I think the positive I can take from this is it’s made me very grateful for the family I have and I’m just going to focus on being the best mother and wife to them that I can be. Thank you again to everyone who commented, and if I’ve left anything out, feel free to let me know! Relevant Comments OOP clarifies the relationship between her and Val OOP: She’s my stepsister. Her dad is my stepdad, but I call him dad because he was the dad who raised me. Downvoted Commenter: She was adopted and was herself in similar situation as she created with Danny - OP's parents adopted her. OOP: They didn’t. My (step)dad is her biological father. She lived mostly with her mum, until she developed serious behavioural issues and it became clear that her mother was not a safe person to have custody and she came to live with us full time. Commenter 1: Is the BF an ex addict too? If so I figure there's an 80% chance that by the time this child is 6 years old, you'll have custody of it, too, if he's not, I'd put those odds at a mere 50/50. OOP: No, he’s not. He’s a crusader with a saviour complex. But he’s a high school teacher, no history of substance abuse as far as we know There’s a 0% chance of us taking custody, we’re not doing that. Commenter 2: Yeah and just don’t be surprised when you get the call later from cps because she reverted back to being a drunk when the stress of a new baby gets to much and they want you to take the second kid. OOP: Yeah we won’t be doing that, someone else will clean up her mess this time OOP responds to a downvoted commenter about keeping Danny from his baby brother OOP: Danny doesn’t want any contact with Val or her baby. He considers my daughter his sister and us his parents. If that ever changes then we will work out a plan but it’s not on the table at the moment. Downvoted Commenter: OP are you considering therapy for yourself? You admitted you don’t really want your sister to be happy, which would allude to me that you have some feelings to work though. It’s not normal to only want your sibling to have moments of happiness, instead of simply happy. Cutting off your sister is not going to heal the feelings you have about her. Having two separate holidays/family functions is not going to rebuild a relationship between her and Danny. I thought that was what you were most upset about? That your sister decided to have a baby instead of working on her relationship with her son, in your view. I don’t think you’re a bad person OP, but I do think you need therapy. OOP: I’m not sure how “not normal” it is when you know your sister is a child abuser. I don’t want to “fix” how I feel about her. I want her out of my life, and I want Danny to be happy and healthy and to not live every day with the effects of what she did, and I’ll do everything in my power to make that happen. If I feel like, even after having some distance from this situation, I’m still spending energy thinking about her, I’ll seek out some help. To let go of it, not because I think I owe her good wishes. Danny doesn’t want any contact with her, and we’re respecting that. If he does ever change his mind, I don’t know what we will do because she is ambivalent about contact with him apparently, but we will help him work through how he wants to approach it. But for now, he has no interest in a relationship with Val. My husband is thinking about fostering his nephews. I feel like I'm being tossed out for kids we don't even know.
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/One-Gap-1282 Originally posted to r/TrueOffMyChest My husband is thinking about fostering his nephews. I feel like I'm being tossed out for kids we don't even know. Trigger Warnings: mental health struggles, drug addiction, mentions trauma, developmental disabilities, ableism Original Post: March 31, 2026 I know I sound like such a bitch. My husband and I have always maintained a childfree life. I don't like kids terribly and he was the oldest of nine and raised his siblings. He loves kids but is done raising them. So he said. He studied child psychology and works with kids who've experienced trauma. Specialises in SPED. But he comes home from work every day, exhausted, talking about how glad he is that he just gets to relax with me. His sister is an addict. She's been in and out of rehab, never stayed clean. She's got two sons. A four year old & infant. Oldest has been in and out of foster care and the baby has been in the system since he was born. The four year old has recently been removed from her custody. My husband was contacted and asked if he wanted to foster them. He said yes immediately and we've got a fucking home check on Wednesday Thursday (eta: sorry I mixed up the days). I feel all kids of ways about it. I tried to talk to him, and he said it'd be hard, but he can't in good conscience let them "rot" in the system. He knows what he's doing with traumatised kids and knows how the system makes things so much worse. I'm so angry. This is my life, too. He said it's not forever, but I know him, and I know he won't let them go anywhere he doesn't one thousand percent approve of. He'd never foster any other kids. He's made jokes about how awful it is to be a foster parent because they try their best and get their shit ruined by kids who can't exist in their own minds. He knows this life inside and out. Why is it different just because they're related to him? I know I sound awful, but we don't know these kids. We've never met them. I don't understand why he feels so righteous about "saving" these kids. If they weren't related to him he wouldn't give a flying fuck. I know we won't survive. I can't even cope with a cat. I had a breakdown when we had one. We had to get rid of her because I couldn't cope. And he expects me to just live with two kids? I don't want our life together to be over. I'm so angry at him and I feel awful for being angry that he's improving lives. Ugh. Editor’s note: OOP made lots of comments in the original post, I am listing the significant ones as they provide more details that were not covered Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I guess you just don't have a good family or empathy for small children. OOP: I feel the same way about family I know vs family I don't. What separates these kids from random kids? Why foster these kids if he wouldn't have ever fostered a strangers child? I was adopted so maybe my view of blood relation is warped that way, but blood doesn't change anything in this situation. Commenter 2: If you have a breakdown over a cat maybe you shouldn’t be in a relationship. OOP: We've been married for six years, together for almost fifteen. I just don't enjoy little life forms clinging to me and screaming at me and injuring me when I'm trying to relax after work. OOP explains more about her background and preferences OOP: I am autistic. I have been to therapy and have been medicated. I prefer to live my life the way I am. My house is my safe space where I can untether myself and exist without constraints. If I suddenly had to deal with kids here I would lose my mind. I know parents do not choose to be miserable. A lot of parents love their kids, even though the miserable parts. My mom says her favourite part of parenting me as a kid was helping me through meltdowns and tantrums. Which is true, I remember her being amazing and sweet through it all. Even now she helps out at respite facilities because she likes helping people. My idea of hell. But my mom is a woman who was designed for motherhood. There are a lot of people like her. I am not one of them. I didn't mean to be condescending. I was just explaining my point of view. OOP on her breakdown with the cat OOP: I have a very specific schedule with my husband. I wake up first, work the early shift, and then come home before him so I can have a couple hours to relax before he gets home. Because I woke up first she was under my feet constantly. I fed her, but then she would eat and put her feet in my coffee, scream at me, jump into my breakfast. Vet told me to play with her so I did, but that didn't help. That was okay, but then when I got home, because she'd been alone for so long she was so clingy. She'd jump all over me, scream, scratch. I coped until I couldn't anymore. Which was like, three months. I know they say it takes time to settle but she just kept getting worse. I think she was too lonely for us. So we gave her to my friend. She's a much happier cat now. I still see her regularly. I have my rabbits and fish. She used to attack them which definitely didn't help me cope with her at all. + The cat was supposed to be separated from the rabbits and fish, which she was, but because she was so clingy it was hard to get into rooms without her also getting in. We weighed up pros and cons for months in regards to the cat. My husband doesn't really care for my rabbits and he wanted a pet. She was supposed to be his, I just ended up dealing with her because she became clingy to me. We met her several times over the course of a month. I had my breakdown three months in, we continued to try for a month, but we couldn't. She's now happier and calmed down instantly. Commenter 3: Where are his other siblings? Btw you’re right, he should have discussed it with you before making such a huge decision that changes both of your lives. It’s time to separate OOP: They already have kids mostly. A couple live way out of state. Commenter 4: I understand the kids have been in foster care a lot, just wondering if you interact with his other nieces and nephew? And what was the reason you never met these kids before? Other than foster care? Or are you child free and not even a good aunty OOP: We see our nieces and nephews regularly. We'd never met these two because my husband is no contact with his sister. OOP on her husband being one of nine, any siblings are not available to take in the kids? OOP: No. Three are minors, two have kids, two are out of state. His parents aren't fit either. Commenter 5: I'm wondering if your husband chose you because of your issues. Not the child-free part - you're certainly allowed to have that choice, but the part where you claim to have about had a nervous breakdown trying to take care of a cat. That's ridiculously over-the-top language to use and it makes you sound overly dramatic. It doesn't take much to get to know a literal infant. OOP: Probably. He likes helping people. We met because I was put in Gen Ed as a trial program and they set him up to be my "buddy" for my first week. He's been obsessed with me ever since. OOP's and her husband's ages OOP: Twenty nine. OOP on her struggles as an autistic person OOP: As an autistic person you should know that we are all different. I don't mind dirty or messy or stinky. I have rabbits. They're so gross. I love them so much. I also have fish, who don't smell as such, but are effort. My house is the place I get to recover from life. Everything is where it's supposed to be. I get to come home from work, have a snack, and lie in a dark room for two hours with my fish. I couldn't even do that with a cat. How am I supposed to do that with kids? Kids are loud. They mess things up. They never give you alone time. Babies wake up at night. I'd probably have to get rid of my room so they could have a bedroom so I wouldn't even have a place to detox. I don't like speaking when I get home. Kids don't understand sign language. I could teach them, but they'd take time and I'd just get frustrated. I've worked so hard to be somewhat functional. Kids would mess that all up. + The way I exist works for me. I have come a long way since I was a child. There is not much more "growing" I can do. I'm on the brink of a meltdown almost constantly. Therapy made me worse so I'm just coping. These are my strategies to not be a drain on society. I do not avoid anything in my daily life. I just need a safe space. That space is my home. My husband is a child psychologist. I know how children develop, and even "good" children, raised well from birth with no disabilities or behavioural concerns (which is unlikely for both of these children) would be too much for me on a day to day. In order for me to survive with kids, not even being a good parent just not losing it on them, I'd have to quit my job and move back in with my moms and just come home periodically. I don't want that. I like being independent. I love my parents, but I'll always be that "profoundly autistic" little girl to them. And when I'm with them my behaviours do revert. It's going to happen anyway. My husband wants the boys, and I could never stop him. Until I could get my own place I'd have to go back to my parents. But if I'm back there I'll just end up dependent again and then I'll probably never move out. And boom. Life over. I'd probably be happier, but I don't want to rely on them. When they die it'll be so much harder for me to exist. Update: April 2, 2026 (two days later) Update on my husband fostering his nephews. Hi. I didn't expect my post to blow up. I want to start by confirming that yes, I am autistic, and I was considered "profoundly autistic" as a child. Now would be diagnosed as level two or three. I have worked very hard to be as functional as I am. I am not against children as a concept, I just can't cope with them. I made a mistake in my original post where I said the home inspection was on Wednesday. I meant Thursday, which is today. I prewrote the post a few days ago and decided to post on a whim. Anyway. This morning I showed my post to my husband. He said he read it, but then we had the social worker over, and things were kind of insane. The social worker ended up telling us that we didn't pass a home inspection. We have a list of things we need to change, and we have another inspection booked for next week. Unfortunately one of the concerns the SW had was my pets. I have free range rabbits and several fish tanks, which pose several different risks. The fish tanks are able to be pulled from shelves, a child could fall into my big one, lots of wires that are very grabbable. The rabbits are just bite risks, and they poop all over. Obviously I clean up after them but if a child were to put a dropping in their mouth that would not be great. I sat down with my husband after she left. Laid my feelings out, and my new concerns in regards to my animals. I can move my fish tanks to a locked room (my "office") but my rabbits are still free roam. Not to mention my rabbits room (where they go at night) or my office will be needed as a bedroom. So either my fish or my rabbits have to go because they can't be in the same room. I was upset, but I understand more now why he feels the need to take the boys in. Everyone who said they are a connection to his sister was right. We both cried. We love each other but we don't see a way to make this work. He feels strongly about saving them. We both know I could never cope with them. I don't want to have to pick between my rabbits and my fish. I called my parents. They have said I can move back home if I need. I'm unhappy with it, as they are very overbearing and all independence I've worked hard to develop will essentially be gone. But beggers can't be choosers, and I'm not getting divorced, so that's a win. Nothing is set in stone. We're going to see how the inspections and things work out first. But this is probably what's going to happen. To everyone who asked me how he was going to manage them all he said his other sister is happy to help while works, she just couldn't foster them because she doesn't have enough space. Which is true. She has six kids in one bedroom already. I hope this explained everything. I enjoy replying to comments so I will still be replying to comments here and on my other post. Thank you. Relevant Comments Downvoted Commenter: Why. Are. You. Giving. Him. The. House? Tell him it's on. Court. You are entitled to minimum half of that place. Grow a spine and get a lawyer. OOP: We aren't divorcing. Just living separately for the time being. It's his house anyway. Commenter 1: Are you aware moving out may also be seen as a negative to the social worker since it’s reducing it to a one “parent” household instead of a stable two “parent” household? Is your husband aware that any care for them by non-household adults (even family members) would need to be approved - and if his other sister already has 6 kids in one bedroom, she’s unlikely to be approved due to space and safety for even occasional care and may have an investigation opened on her too in the process due to inadequate living conditions for her own kids? OOP: Yes. But these are our circumstances. It'll either work or it won't. SIL has contacted cps herself for help with housing. They know her situation. Commenter 2: This already seems like progress from the original post. I really hope you two can figure everything out. As a side note: people have rabbits and fish and children coexist in a household. I’m not saying it’s the right fit for you, but it is possible if you decide to go that route. Best of luck to you! OOP: Thank you. I honestly didn't think my animals would be an issue, but CPS don't want them in the house so. My rabbits are terrible. They can't share a room with the fish at all lol. Commenter 3: A third option is to move houses, not move out. Do what you have to for now, but intentionally move to a house where this is more viable. 1) Rabbits pooping all over the house is not “free range” nor is it sanitary for adults. They don’t really eat meat so it’s not terrible, but it’s definitely not good. 2) Some houses have elevated recesses for tvs, etc. that could safely house fish tanks. 3) If you insist on the rabbits roaming freely, semi-permanent baby gates exist that cannot be readily breeched by child or sedentary bunny. OOP: The moving out is for me as well as the animals. I won't be able to cope without decent alone time. One rabbit is litter trained, the other one just doesn't care. I've tried, but it hasn't worked, so I follow him around with a little poop bag when he's exploring. Fish tanks need to be locked away ideally as I don't want to secure them to a wall (my other "option"). I can't use baby gates because the rabbits chew them. Commenter 4: What kind of family did your husband come from? None of them seem to have adult coping skills. Well, except for your husband, though he doesn't seem to have a full grasp on what it takes to raise troubled children. OOP: He's a child psychologist who specialises in SPED (and foster kids, unintentionally). His family is mostly dysfunctional though. OOP explains why she can't live alone OOP: I'm not functional as a person. I don't like eating. If someone doesn't force me I won't eat. I get overwhelmed with messes that don't have a scheduled clean up. Ie, dishes I can't do spontaneously, because theres always new dishes and different foods. But my rabbits have the same clean up routine every day so I do that without issue. There's probably some I don't even know about yet because I've always had someone to help. Commenter 5: During the home inspection, did anyone ask or did you voice your reluctance to be a foster parent? That should be a priority to those who decide. OOP: I wasn't speaking at the time. My husband explained it to the social worker and they said my interview would be held at a later date with an interpreter on standby. I'm not sure why I couldn't just type but 🤷🏻♀️. Commenter 5: You’re a non-verbal person? I’m curious how an interpreter would work for you. Feel free to say if you wish. 🙂 OOP: I'm not always nonverbal. I think I'm diagnosed as selectively mute, but I was nonverbal until I was like nine. I use sign language a lot of the time. My husband’s dad is deaf, so he taught me sign language when we met so I'd have more authority over what I was saying rather than being forced to use the words I was offered on cards. I would have all of my feelings and wants cards and I'd have to put two together to communicate. Like, if I was mad because there was too much noise, I would use "mad" and "loud" so then caregivers/parents/etc would turn all noise off, or remove me. When in reality there was just too many noises. So I'd get even more upset, because I still wanted the music, but I wanted the blinds to stop rattling. Sign language gave me the ability to tell people that the blinds were too loud, rather than just using my "loud" card. You know? Anyway, so that's what the interpreter would be for. Help with processing separation from my husband/caregiver due to kids?: April 3, 2026 (next day) I don't know if the title makes any sense. I'm not very good with words but I'm hoping my post will help explain. I didn't really know what flair to use. I am autistic and was diagnosed "profound" as a child (4yo in 2001). There have been some debates about whether that’s true or not. I now sit at level 2 with level 3 traits. I've worked really hard to be where I am. My husband has been one of my main supporters since we were kids and has always supported me in my independence. I rely on very strict routines to remain functional. Unfortunately my husband’s sister had lost custody of her kids and my husband is taking them in. I cannot function with kids, at all, as they will disrupt my routines. Because of this I'm having to move out and back in with my parents. It's very stressful and overwhelming in itself, but my parents aren't as big on me being independent, and I definitely regress in behaviours when I'm with them. It will make things much harder for me long term. My husband is doing a good thing. I'm happy for him. But this is still very scary for me. I made a couple other posts about the situation, and someone told me to post here for advice or support. I don't know if anyone else has been through this, but I'd appreciate anything. Thank you. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Can you build a granny flat for you to live in or convert the basement to a separate living space then your husband and the children live in the main house. You are close enough to maintain your relationship and support each other whilst having a calm space with no interruptions to your routine. I am only ADHD but suspect AuDHD, I thought my coping strategies were strong enough and chose to have one child, but my child has messed with my regulating routines, and I completely understand why you can't live with children. OOP: We talked about it but decided it would probably still be best if I stay with my parents just because he doesn't know how much time he'll have to help me, especially considering the fact that I will probably have more meltdowns with change. Commenter 2: OP, I went back and read all of your posts about this situation. My heart breaks for you. I don’t have any advice, because this would be a dealbreaker for me. If my SO was in agreement for TWENTY YEARS that we would remain child free for our lives together and then suddenly told me that I have to upend my entire life, move my animals, and essentially be forced to agree to separate in my marriage for children that I have never met… I would not be handing things as well as you are. OOP: We've only known each other for twenty three years. We only discussed not having kids maybe ten years ago. I know the information doesn't change your comment but I'm pedantic like that. But thank you. I had my little meltdown about it when he told me. But I think my inability to process emotions well helped me? Not really sure. It definitely sucked. Commenter 3: I don’t have any advice but here to support. You seem like a kind and thoughtful person who is willing to do this to accommodate family needs and also do what’s best for you. I wonder if you are able to share your fears with your parents and set some boundaries to maintain your independence? In any case, sending you love and I hope everything goes smoothly 💗 OOP Thank you. I have spoken to them about it several times, but a decent amount is involuntary too. AITAH For moving out while my husband fosters his nephews?: April 4, 2026 (next day) My husband wanted me to post because he was enjoying reading comments on my other posts. Posted with his permission. I am a relatively high needs autistic woman, and my husband is my caregiver. We are child free because I can not live with children due to overwhelming me. He received a call station his sisters kids were in need of a foster home. He agreed readily. This caused friction because I wasn't consulted and ended up being blindsided. The situation is impossible for me to live in and so I was very upset. I struggled to understand why he was doing this to us. I made a post on a subreddit, and a lot of people told me to either deal or leave my husband so he could find someone who deserves him. I ended up showing him the post and we had a long conversation where he explained why he couldn't let his nephews go into foster care. Because of that I am having to move back in with my parents and periodically come home to see him and the children in short bursts. I will either move back when they go back to their mom or when they're older and can understand rules and boundaries. When I made an update post, I ended up receiving a lot of hate still because people believe my husband needs to divorce me as I'm not being a good wife and helping with the children, as well as reducing his likelihood of being passed as a foster carer as a single father. AITAH For moving out? I hope this post is formatted correctly. I'm not really sure what I'm doing. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: The fact that you refer to your husband as your caregiver makes me sad for your husband . It sounds like all you care about is what he does for you. Marriage is a partnership and you’ve delegated him to caregiver . OOP: He is my caregiver. He cares for me. He is still my husband first and foremost. Commenter 2: I understand why he is supporting his sister's kids. It sounds like it was sudden. But you also have to take care of you. Maybe by visiting and getting doses of the kids on your terms, might help you down the road OOP: That is the plan! Commenter 3: NTA. But curious? Did you work on this/consult with a professional to be sure you couldn't learn to tolerate them? Also not calling your spouse an AH but if you actually need care it's kind of a strange choice to take in others who keep him from being your caregiver...or does he not think you need it? It seems like an ok compromise...but I'm just idk if I was caregiver for my spouse they'd have to come first unless I had my own kids maybe. OOP: I have worked with lots of therapists. My life is mostly set up of very structured routines to keep myself on track and kids are too unpredictable. He knew if all else failed my parents would look after me. Commenter 4: So can you live on your own or is your husband your 24/7 caretaker? Was he your same level of caretaker in this same scenario when he proposed? Or have you required more assistance from him since you were married? Does your husband have any outside support or is he your sole caregiver? OOP: I can't live alone, but don't need 24/7 care. I was a lot worse when I was younger. I've worked hard on developing routines to keep myself safe and calm. He's known me for twenty three years. He sought me out to date and then marry. He was fully consenting here. He has therapy and I go to my parents rarely when he desperately needs a break, but that's usually when I'm having back to back meltdowns. Commenter 5: Info: I am a relatively high needs autistic woman, and my husband is my caregiver. What does this mean? His sole job is to.... care giver for your needs? You are unable to function on a day-to-day basis? OOP: He helps me be functional. I don't need 24/7 care, and most of the time I am fairly okay, but I do meltdown and struggle with a lot of things that he helps me deal with. If he needs a break I go back to my parents. + He cooks and cleans unless he helps me do them. I can't do things that don't have a specific constant and then they lead to meltdowns. I can do things like frozen meals because it's the same every time. Although I also have a lot of issues with food and eating, so that's the biggest thing he helps me with. Is my adopted brother flirting with me?: February 17, 2026 OOP was adopted from Russia at age three, describes being close with her family, especially a brother close in age, but she recently feels confused and uneasy about changes in his behavior. Since they’ve been living far apart for college, he became more shy and physically affectionate in ways that feel unusual to her, such as wanting to hold her hand or keep an arm around her, which makes her uncomfortable. She’s unsure whether this shift is due to distance and emotional difficulty or if it comes across as inappropriate or flirty, and she’s conflicted about whether to address her discomfort for fear of misinterpreting the situation and creating awkwardness. Update: Is my adopted brother flirting with me?: February 17, 2026 (same day, hours later) OOP gives an update on the previous post saying she believes her brother’s behavior is indeed inappropriate after receiving mixed and largely confirming feedback. She calls her mother to discuss the situation, though they’re worried it could disrupt the family dynamic. She rejected the idea that his behavior is due to social awkwardness, noting he has always been outgoing and recently went through a breakup, which she thinks might be influencing his actions. The situation is disturbing her, she emphasizes that she see him strictly as her brother regardless of not being biologically related, and feeling sick and devastated that their relationship may be changing. Final update: Is my adopted brother flirting with me?: February 18, 2026 (next day) OOP recounts a phone call where her brother confessed he is in love with her, expressing remorse and fear of losing their relationship. She responded that she only sees him as a sibling and set boundaries, saying she would cut off communication if he can’t respect that. He begged her not to shut him out, this left her feeling uncomfortable, as he continued to send numerous messages afterward. She considered blocking him, plans to inform her parents and suggest a mental health check for him, and tries to prioritize school responsibilities. She hopes to preserve her relationship with the rest of her family, she acknowledges she may need to distance herself from him if his behavior continues. For the full original post, you can locate it in the link at the top of this BoRU Original Post: February 18, 2026 (same day, different subreddit) Per the previous tangentially posts, OOP describes a deeply distressing situation involving her adoptive brother, who grew up very close to after she was adopted from Russia. After OOP started college and living apart, his behavior toward her changed during a recent visit, him becoming physically affectionate in ways that made her uncomfortable and crossing boundaries. Eventually, he confessed that he is in love with her, which left OOP feeling shocked, disgusted, and betrayed, especially given their sibling relationship. She feels isolated and unsure how to handle the situation, torn between wanting to cut off contact and fearing he may harm himself. Have you ever felt less than your biological siblings?: February 19, 2026 (next day) OOP shares her thoughts on being adopted from Russia at a young age and growing up in a family where she looked visibly different from her biological siblings, which often led others to assume she wasn’t truly part of the family. Despite her parents’ strong efforts to make her feel included and loved, she experienced exclusion and subtle discrimination, particularly from extended family members on her father’s side, who would treat her differently and intentionally isolate her. She acknowledges her parents did a great job and recognize her own racial privileges, recent family issues caused her to revisit and process lingering feelings of being ostracized and not fully belonging within her families. Small Update: February 19, 2026 (next day from the original title post) OOP had a meeting with her counselor at her university. She was advised to call her parents to express her concerns about her brother and the uncomfortable situation he puts OOP in. She gave her thanks to the redditors for the support regarding the incident with her brother. I called my parents: February 19, 2026 (same day, later that night) OOP described a difficult conversation with her parents after preparing with her counselor, during which she shared evidence of her brother’s increasingly inappropriate and concerning behavior, including excessive calls, boundary-crossing physical contact, and messages suggesting romantic feelings. Her parents reacted seriously, especially her mother, who was apologetic and concerned, while her father appeared disturbed and, at one point, redirected blame toward OOP’s clothing, adding to the distress. OOP expressed clear needs for space and asked that her brother not contact her while also urging their parents to check on his mental health. The situation remains unresolved, with the parents planning to follow up after speaking with the brother. Update #1: February 20, 2026 (next day) OOP still has the ongoing stress and confusion after her parents spoke with her brother, who denied his behaviors and blamed his messages on being drunk, which OOP does not believe. Her father seems to minimize the situation as a lapse in judgment, her mother remains uncertain, leaving OOP feeling unsupported and frustrated. Her brother continues to ignore boundaries by contacting OOP casually, increasing her discomfort and fear. OOP is torn between wanting him to get help and wanting to protect herself, no longer feeling safe returning home and considering different living arrangements. She is also thinking about confiding in her sister for support, as they struggle with the emotional burden and uncertainty of how seriously their parents are taking the situation. Update #2: Brother said he was going to come see me for Spring Break: February 23, 2026 (three days later) OOP shares a final update explaining that she chose to block her brother after he repeatedly ignored her boundaries, sending him a message stating she needed space for her well-being. Despite this, he continued contacting her, using other platforms and, during an accidental call, expressed desperation to stay connected and suggested visiting her city, which made OOP increasingly uncomfortable and fearful. OOP firmly refused, reiterated her need for distance, and blocked him everywhere. She recognizes he may be struggling with his mental health, she no longer feel safe and are prioritizing their own protection, planning to speak with her counselor and step back from the situation. She shared the situation with their sister, who was supportive, giving OOP some emotional validation amid an otherwise distressing and unresolved family dynamics. ----NEW UPDATES---- Editor’s note: the next two updates are over a week old, and they have not been posted here to the sub WIBTAH if I refuse to meet my mom and brother after they flew across the country to see me?: March 6, 2026 (1.5 weeks later) Long story short (I have a lot more posts about this on my profile for the full story), I (19F) was adopted at 3, my brother (20M) was 4 who was my parents’, and I have two other siblings that are also my parents’ biological children. We grew up to be very close, and I always was so grateful for our relationship. Things changed around a year ago. He had been overly touchy over Christmas, acted mellower around me, and sent me questionable texts calling me beautiful and being flirty. We go to different colleges on the opposite sides of the country so some of this I chocked up to him missing me. A few weeks ago, he confessed he developed romantic feelings for me which has snowballed into this horrible situation for my entire family. I told him I felt revolted by his confession and called my parents as I was concerned for his mental health. Everyone was shocked and confused, my parents were angry, and my brother lied and said his mental health was fine when they called after (which makes me so pissed off omg). Last week, my brother told me he wanted to come to my city during his spring break, despite having already booked a weeklong vacation with his friends in Hawaii (and I knew he was looking forward to since he’s been talking about this trip for months now). Obviously that freaked me out since he wasn’t respecting my boundaries, and I was genuinely concerned if I needed to tell the police. I called my parents, and they said that they would handle it. Imagine my surprise their way of handling it, was my mom flying out at the same time as my brother. She said she would “keep him in check” and that it would be “healing to have an intermediary resolve our issues.” I told her I had no interest in meeting up with him right now, as I felt he was escalating and it would make me incredibly nervous. It’s so strange because all the comments I have been receiving have reiterated the same thing that my brother is dangerous right now, he shouldn’t be anywhere near me, and I should even consider no-contact. Yet after my parent’s fully absorbed this, they’re calm and don’t even seem to notice how he might be dangerous? It’s like they can’t fathom their perfect son might not be so perfect and they want to maintain an illusion. I feel like my mom is trying to be the white knight in shining armor, and thinks their trip will fix this entire situation and we can just move past it. Every time I voice my worries, they’re treating me like I am over-dramatizing this situation. Would she actually even keep me safe is the question and my instincts are telling me no. Her words have been eating at me though, I feel as if though I am crazy for feeling the things that I am feeling. I feel as if I can’t event trust myself anymore? I also want to believe that my brother would never hurt me. But tell me a year ago that he confessed he was in love with me, I would have never believed it either. It’s so terribly difficult for me to determine. If I say no to meeting-up with them, I am so afraid they’re going to cut me off financially (they pay for all my expenses essentially). I would be more than happy to find a job while in college, and take out loans if need be, as I truly just want to be safe. I guess what hurts more would be potentially ex-communicated with my entire family. My parents have both handled this terribly, but I still deeply love them and don’t want to lose them forever. I just don’t know if this is risk I want to take? Would I be the asshole if I said no, despite my mom’s assurances that I will be safe? Editor’s note: OOP did not leave any comments here in this update Update: My brother is coming for spring break/my plan: March 11, 2026 (five days later) Editor’s note: removed a part of this update as it is a rehash of the previous post Hi guys, sorry I have been busy with school these past few days. I guess this will be my last update until my brother and mother come unless something important happens (I know I have said it before, but things keep happening lol). I reported my mother and brother to the campus security department, of which they were flagged. I showed them as much evidence as I could, mainly my phone logs and hundreds of messages from my brother. It is kinda a difficult situation since my brother and mother didn't directly threaten me, but they did say during the week they would assign someone to walk me to and from classes and other campus buildings. However, I contacted my counselor, and we discussed the best plan of action for what I felt was most appropriate. I listened to everyone's suggestions and decided it would be best to go out of town during that week. I have already contacted my professors, and they have agreed to give me extenuating circumstances (and I have friends in all my classes who can take notes for me). My best friend is a godsend because she also agreed to take this week off and we are driving to her family's house a few hours away for the week. I am literally so grateful I could cry, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. She has two brothers who live at home still, so I also feel safe knowing that if god forbid my brother or mother found me. I have muted all communications from my family besides my sister and older brother. Funnily enough my brother texted me yesterday (I check his texts every day in case they actually get threatening) and he sent "Answer your fucking phone, at least for mom. She's getting worried." I also turned off location sharing services. I am actually so fatigued I feel like I am relaying stuff that doesn't matter that much anymore, but this is just for the curious souls and also a way for me to vent. Have a good (early) morning! Editor’s note: OOP did not leave any comments here in this update Editor's note: adding a tangential post that is possible linked to the situation with OOP's parents and brother Is there a way to turn off location on iPhone without notifying the other party?: March 13, 2026 (two days later) Title and I mean by this, when you turn off location, it tells the other person your turned it off. How do I do that without informing that person? Editor's note: OOP did not leave any comments in this post I an officially cut off: March 21, 2026 (eight days later) Lol sorry for using a meme, I am just using it to cope really. My parents cancelled my credit card, my phone service, and essentially everything else they provided for me. It's a good day because now I have no obligations to them anymore. Maybe I will write later about everything that happened because it is a lot but I am free everyone. Thank you all for your advice! It means a lot. Picture of "But I am free" The image shows a silhouetted person standing outdoors at the sunset, holding their arms high above their head as a broken chain hangs from their wrists, with links snapping apart in midair. At the bottom of the image, the text reads “BUT I AM FREE,” reinforcing the theme of breaking free from constraints, and a sense of personal empowerment or release. My bf asked for the banana & now I've got the ick + 2 Year Update
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Effective-Snow-1186 Originally posted to r/TwoHotTakes My bf asked for the banana & now I've got the ick + 2 Year Update Editor's note: added paragraph breaks and made small edits for ease of readability Trigger Warnings: emotional abuse and manipulation, verbal abuse, medical issues, strangulation, domestic violence, attempted murder Original Post: March 9, 2024 My bf asked for the banana and now I've got the ick Me and my bf have been together for almost 3 years. He has three teenage daughters. Every morning before school/work I make breakfast and coffee. I typically make breakfast sandwiches. Usually when they're eating breakfast it's too early for my body to handle eating, so I'll eat later in the morning. The other morning we had an event to go to a hour away, I made breakfast as usual, they ate as usual and I didn’t, but I grabbed water and a banana to take to eat on the way. When I got in the car I put everything on the seat. My bf took the water and banana and put it on the center console. About 20 minutes into the drive I got hungry and took a bite of the banana. He looked at me and said angrily: "You know I would like to eat some of MY banana!" I thought he was joking but soon realized he was serious. I told him that I brought the banana because I haven't eaten breakfast and that I knew I would get hungry. He told me that was his banana and he wanted to eat it. I was in shock because I knew 110% I brought the banana and after I told him I hadn't eaten yet (he had eaten) and told him I was hungry he still wanted the banana. I had only taken one small bite, I gave him the banana. He ate it and didn't think twice about it. I have the ick big time all over a freakin' banana. Relevant / Top Comments Downvoted Commenter: When I got in the car I put everything on the seat. My bf took the water and banana and put it on the center console. I feel like I need an elaboration here, because something doesn't fit? So.. you get in the car and place the water and banana on the seat.. which seat, the one you’re sitting in? Why would you place it in the other seat if you know your bf is about to sit down there? If you placed it on the seat next to you, he reached over and took it off your seat to move it? If you placed it on his seat, and he had to move it to be able to sit down, I can see why that might be a misunderstanding with him thinking you brought it for him, cause you placed it on his seat, which again is not something I expect someone to do when they know someone will be sitting there. OOP's only comment in this original post: I have had 3 strokes in the past 2 years. I still have right side weakness. He has a big SUV. I put the water and banana on the passenger seat (where I would be sitting) to lift myself up to sit down. He moved it so I can sit. Commenter: It’s never one issue - it’s the accumulation of a bunch of incidents finally being exemplified by this one glaring incident. How many times has he been irrationally angry and testy? You’re not reacting like “woah that’s so weird and out of character” so I’m guessing often. How often does he not listen to you, and won’t have a conversation, and is just pissy and demanding? How often are you expected to give in? How many times do you take the smaller piece of pie, or go to the restaurant he wants, or keep the thermostat where he likes it? You have the ick because this is the straw that’s breaking the camel’s back. It’s one time too many. Take a look at your relationship, and decide whether you want to be someone who doesn’t care that you didn’t have breakfast, will yell at you over nothing, and is going to put himself first over things large and small. Update: March 12, 2026 (two years later) Editor's note: removed the first part of the update post as it is a rehash of the original post from two years earlier. The edit and update #1 were added to the same original post on a different sub Editor's note #2: OOP made several updates throughout the day ---- Edit: I shared this post almost 2 years ago. I was overwhelmed that 2.4 million people read my post. Shared it 2.3k times. I had over 1k comments. This post changed my life in the best way. Thank you to everyone who commented and gave me advice. An update is going to be posted this evening. Update 1: I work 4 jobs. I worked later than expected last night. I am working on my update post between breaks today. I will have the update up before 10pm EST. For those commenting that this is just "for attention" please wait till you read the update. This man left me for dead and is on bond. I'm updating because I'm grateful for those who gave advice from my OG post. I'm hoping that they find this post and know how much I appreciate them. They saved my life. Editor’s note: below is the official update per OOP Update 2: The Banana Post… & the Plot Twist I Didn’t Expect 🍌. About two years ago I posted what I thought was just a ridiculous relationship story about a banana in the car. I expected maybe a handful of people to read it. Instead it reached millions of people, got thousands of shares, and the comment section turned into a giant discussion about red flags in relationships. At the time I thought Reddit might be overreacting a little. Turns out… Reddit might have saved my life. The day after that post went viral, one of my mentors randomly called me and said something strange: “Hey… if you ever need somewhere to stay, my husband and I have a room for you.” I was confused. I have a place of my own. Why would she think I needed somewhere to stay? She simply said, “If you ever need to leave quickly, we’re here.” What I didn’t know at the time is that she had experience as a counselor and had quietly noticed signs that my relationship wasn’t healthy. The next day I called her back and said, “You know what… I think I might take you up on that.” Then something even more unexpected happened. Later that same day she called me again and said: “My daughter works for a family with a non-verbal autistic son. They have an apartment above their garage they want to rent out. It’s $800 a month. Do you want to see it?” (They ended up being the family I needed. They're my "adopted family" now.) So my coworker and I went to look at it after work. It was beautiful. Quiet property, a mansion, peaceful little apartment above the garage. Furnished. Safe. I remember standing there thinking: “This might actually be my way out.” And honestly, part of the reason I listened to that voice was because of all of you. Thousands of Reddit comments telling me something about my situation wasn’t right. I signed the lease the next day. Then I started quietly moving my things out. When I finally told my ex I was leaving, things escalated. There were fights. Chaos. At one point he somehow managed to set his own arm on fire trying to make the house smell good with a candle on the stove. (Yes, really.) I ended up helping take care of him while he recovered… while I had the flu with a 102° fever. That was the moment I realized something important: I wasn’t his partner. I was his caretaker. Not long after that, everything finally came to a breaking point. One night during an argument he took my phone so I couldn’t call anyone. When I tried to leave, he pinned me against the wall and started screaming inches from my face. Then he threw me to the floor and put me in a chokehold. I tried to fight. I tried to kick out. I tried to tap out. But the harder I fought, the tighter he squeezed. The last thing I remember thinking was: “He’s going to accidentally kill me.” Then everything went red. Then black. When I woke up, I was alone in the room. I grabbed my little chihuahua, ran out of the house, and drove to a gas station trying to get help because I could barely breathe. Eventually I made it to the hospital where doctors and police documented the injuries. Broken capillaries in my neck. Bruising. Injuries to my ankle from trying to escape. The officers told me something that still sticks with me: Women who are strangled by their partners are at dramatically higher risk of being killed later. That next morning my ex was arrested. Since then, there have been court cases, delays, lawyers, and the long process of accountability. But the truth is, that night could have been the end of my story. Instead… It became the beginning of a completely different life. Today I work what I jokingly call four lives instead of four jobs. I’m a hairstylist, a DJ, a karaoke host, a trivia host and a bartender. Full time I’m doing hair transformations behind the chair, at nights I’m running a microphone in a bar while people passionately debate trivia questions. It’s chaotic. My schedule is wild. But my life is full of music, laughter, community and people who actually care about me. And honestly? I’m doing better than I ever imagined. I’m successful in my career, surrounded by supportive friends and building a life that feels peaceful and exciting at the same time. So I wanted to come back here and say something important: Thank you. Thank you to the Redditors who commented on that silly banana story and pointed out things I wasn’t ready to see yet. Thank you to the women who shared their experiences without judgment. Thank you to the people who encouraged me to trust my instincts. Sometimes strangers on the internet can see something clearly when you’re still standing too close to the situation. And sometimes a random banana post ends up being the first step toward saving your own life. Life isn’t perfect now. But I’m free. I’m safe. And for the record… I still bring my own bananas on car rides🍌. Update 3: One of the strangest coincidences of my life... There’s one part of that night I forgot to include in the earlier updates, and it still gives me chills when I think about it. While I was in the hospital after the strangulation, I realized I had to call the owner of the salon where I work to tell her I wouldn’t be able to make it in that day. When she answered, the first thing she said after hearing what happened was: “I’ve actually been waiting for this phone call.” I was confused. I asked her what she meant. She paused and said something that stopped me cold. She told me that that exact day was the anniversary of her sister’s death. Her sister had been murdered by her boyfriend… by strangulation. She said she was so sorry that it happened to me, but that hearing my story didn’t shock her because she had seen the signs before and she cared about my safety. I started crying when she told me that. I don’t know exactly what I believe when it comes to fate or the universe or coincidences. But moments like that make you stop and think. The day I almost lost my life was the same day the woman who owns the salon I work at lost her sister to the exact same thing. And somehow, I ended up working for someone who understands what I went through in a way very few people can. Since then, I’ve realized something important. I’m surrounded by people who care about me, who look out for me and who genuinely want me to be safe and happy. My friends, my coworkers, my mentors, even strangers who supported me when I needed it. After everything that happened, I don’t take that for granted anymore. I’m grateful. And I’m still here. To any women or men who feel like they can't get out of a situation... I promise you can make it out. It won't be easy, but you can do it. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: What happened to the three daughters? Did they get out. Were they attacked ever? OOP: He still has joint custody. His trial is coming up. Commenter 2: Wow. Even when she decided to leave, it still took several things before she did. I read the part about being left for dead and assumed the story would be him somehow finding her in her new above garage apartment. OOP: He tried to get my address. He tried to go over to the apartment to drop of dinner or send me door dash, but I never allowed him to know where I lived. OOP responds to a commenter who shared similar experience OOP: Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience. I got the chills reading your comment bc when I woke up I went to get Sienna (my Chihuahua) I noticed my ex in the kitchen on his phone texting. He then waved my phone and in a high pitch, creepy voice phone and said in a taunting tone: " Here's your phone." To find out he was messaging his best friend and ex-wife saying I went crazy. The only reason I know this bc they messaged me on IG, after his arrest, they were telling me I need to drop the charges. I was unconscious in the room and he was already creating his story. Commenter 3: OP, KNOW that by sharing your experiences you HAVE and WILL save lives. I wish you all the blessings in the world, because you are a blessing TO the world. OOP: That's all I want. It's hard to accept that I was fooled by a man. I thought I was smarter than that. But I realize I was manipulated by a man who has a degree in psychology. He was one step ahead till I figured out his mind games. I had a security guard at a club we were at pull me aside and told me:" the peace that you will feel without that man will feel better than the love you have for him." I consistently had strangers in public stand up for me. It took time to get out and regular therapy to be able to not be upset with myself to allow that kind of manipulation and treatment. OOP shares on how she is doing after she left her ex OOP: It definitely hasn't been easy after I left. I'm working 4 jobs bc I went into debt helping support him and his family. I have attorney fees. I wish I would have left sooner I would have saved myself some trauma and some money. + I'm happily working the hardest I have ever worked in my life but I'm the first women in my entire family to live on my own without a man. The first women in my family to stand up against abuse. I'm definitely proud to finally break the generational curse. OOP on the ex's daughters OOP: I love those girls so much. I never wanted to have children, but they opened up my heart in a way I can't explain. I loved taking care of them and having them in my life. I learned a lot from having them in my life. I stayed for them, but I also had to leave for them. I had to set the example. OOP on her dog OOP: Sienna is doing great. She's 16 and thriving. She my spoiled brat. Commenter 4: Congratulations on escaping that vile, abusive SOB. I’m wishing the absolute worst on him. I knew a young woman whose husband would choke her during arguments. She didn’t want to leave him at first, but was finally convinced to file for divorce. A few months later, he went to her apartment to “talk,” strangled her and left her for dead, then turned himself in. She was on life support for a couple of days until it became evident there was no brain activity left. I’m glad for you that you’re safe now, as, if that rat-bastard nearly killed you the first time, I’m afraid he wouldn’t have stopped until he managed it the next time. OOP: That wasn't his first time strangulating me. The other times I was able to "tap out" but it got worse every time. OOP shares her experiences when it came to calling the police OOP: I didn't want police involved. When I went to the gas station for help the worker told me he was going to call the police. Once I heard that, I ran. I didn't want to get him in trouble. I finally had to stop driving bc my ankle hurt so bad. I went to the closet gas station and a nurse who was there saw me told me I needed to go to the hospital bc my ankle was broken. She told me to not allow whoever did that to me to get away with it. She was smart enough not to bring up police or 911. At that moment I was still trying to protect him. What I didn't know is once the nurses and doctors knew what happened to me they had to call the police and in the state I live in it's not me against him it's the state against him. I have no say in if he gets arrested. It took me over 5 hours to finally open up to the police. OOP on doing well for herself and the progress of the ex's trial OOP: Thank you! Trial keeps getting postponed bc he fired his lawyer or his lawyer ends up withdrawing from his case. What color is my new baby
Hi we just adopted this sweet baby! We still haven’t named her but we were curious what color you guys think she is? I have never seen this color before! EDIT: Thank you guys so much for the love you have shown us! I have kind of came to the conclusion that my cat is friend colored since the world is so divided. JK, a lot of the cat genetic people have responded with mixed answers of lilac, caramel, cinnamon, smoke and chocolate. A lot of people are saying that a dilute gene is almost definitely in play. I want to say I do believe any of these comments to be correct as fever coat could be a thing and she could darken to chocolate as she ages. She also could of had malnutrition and she may change to be a lighter color! For those who recommended emailing MessyBeast, they have responded and here is a quote of what they said "My first thoughts were caramel, which is actually pretty rare outside of pure-breed cats. Without knowing parentage the caramel colors are hard even for experienced judges to identify. It would be interesting to see what a DNA test finds (as others have suggested)." Generally, I have came to the conclusion that we will not know until she is older. That is okay though because I am so happy to able to have her in my life and be able to say I will be around when she gets older. I may do a DNA test as many people are recommending but they are a little to costly for the amount of satisfaction I would have in knowing. Maybe I will get it done as a treat to myself for my birthday coming up soon. On a side note, as requested I will be copy and pasting her adoption story here so people can read it easier. I will put the full thing in quotation marks so it is easier to read. "Okay but I apologize since I don't know how to use reddit formatting haha. First we weren't 100% looking to adopt another cat but I had been looking around. We love calicos and we had our senior girl pass away recently. I had seen Lamb Chop (adoption name) online and I loved her but she had been listed as a he. I have never owned a male cat but I was ready for it but my fiance said no boy cats. That weekend my fiance went to the gym and I just wanted to go look at cats at the shelter, kind of forgetting about Lamb Chop. I showed up at the shelter and there was legit a line around the building. As I am walking up to the people they ask me if im there for Lamb Chop. I said no since I genuinely wasn't and just wanted to look at calicos. When they let us in they all rushed to go to Lamb Chop and I went in another room to look at the other kitties. I had just gotten done looking at the calicos when I came out and made eye contact with the most terrified kitten (Lamb Chop), being passed around like a toy. It straight up looked like a horror movie where she was the sacrifice. I then also overheard one of the volunteer referring to Lamb Chop as "she". I knew I had to at least put an application in. I put my application in, texted my fiance to get there and I waited. 30minutes later (to my surprise), he answers me and says he is on his way. Which was surprising since he never checks his phone at the gym, let alone leaves 1 hour early. When he gets to the shelter, he also falls in love which was surprising because he was very picky. 1 hour later, they some how pick us out of like 20+ people to adopt her. Its very strange how things work out." submitted by /u/EgirlAnimeBoobies to r/cats [link] [comments]

My husband (32M) is insisting that "we" impregnate his friend after finding I (32F) am unable to conceive
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/doctormcpuffy My husband (32M) is insisting that "we" impregnate his friend after finding I (32F) am unable to conceive TRIGGER WARNING: Stillbirth, infertility shaming, emotional infidelity Original Post Nov 23, 2015 I am honestly in a bit of shock after everything that has transpired in the past 24 hours and need some unbiased opinions to get me through. A little background, my SO and I have been married for four years and together for seven. He is a civil engineer who is more so ambivalent to his career, his real passion lies in his hobbies, our relationship, and his friends. I am an emergency medicine doctor and this is my passion. I love my husband, my friends, and I have hobbies but my work is my absolute passion. Becoming a doctor was my dream since I was 12 and I have made it a reality. Now my issue, about 14 months ago my husband was pushing me to get pregnant, he wanted a baby. I honestly did not, I was finally hitting my stride at work, we just bought our first condo together, and weren't living a really friendly kid life. I did not tell him this, mostly because I was a coward and we had never really disagreed before, so I kept my mouth shut and decided it wouldn't be a huge sacrifice to have a baby. I could make it work. We got pregnant. I was miserable, pregnancy did not suit me and I wanted it to be over. I felt disconnected from everything, especially my pregnancy, and sought out therapy. My therapist told me that I was holding resentment against this baby as I was in a great spot in my career and was more worried about that then my unborn child. She was right. I worked on this and towards month six I was really excited to have this baby. My husband and I were in a better place (my resentment and attitude really hurt our relationship during this time). Everything was going well, until it wasn't. Around seven months in our baby was born as a stillbirth and I had some horrible complications which have caused my chances at ever getting pregnant at an incredibly low percent. I know that I am never getting pregnant. After the initial shock, recovering from the physical trauma and the emotional trauma, I won't lie but I felt relieved. Massive relief. I didn't want to be a mother then, and I will down the road but I am a firm believer that this was just not meant to be. My husband took this harder, but with some therapy on both our ends. We seemed to be in a good spot...until last night. Last night my husband approached me, he said that he really wants us to have a kid and "forgives" me for losing our son. He knows that I cannot conceive, but reminded me that he is more than capable. I had to remind him that we have no options, if we want a baby then we need to look into adoption or getting donated eggs and going the surrogacy route, and right now we aren't in a financial position for either. Then he asked what if there was another way? Naturally I asked, what? He told me that there was a woman at work that he has known for several years, apparently she knows about ALL of our marital problems and knows ALL about my health issues over the past year. He said that they recently went to drinks together (I was on an overnight shift) and after a few drinks she offered to not only donate eggs, but to be our surrogate. This seems too good to be true right? Yep. She will ONLY do this if my husband impregnates her the natural way. Having sex with her during her ovulation period until she gets pregnant. I was baffled by this. First, he was considering it and seemed genuinely excited for this. Second, that this woman would offer such a thing without ever having met me. And finally, that he had shared such intimate details with her. He said that he then followed up with her when they were both sober via text and she responded "Oh, I would love to have your baby!" This seems odd to me and I question the mental stability of this woman. But then my husbands entire demeanor shocks me. I told him I wasn't sure about this, if we go the surrogate route I would prefer it be all anonymous and our surrogate be a stranger. I don't want this getting messy or having to worry about running into the egg donor. Instead of seeing the validity of my opinions he told me that having a baby with him was non-negotiable. That this "friend" wants to help us, he wouldn't mind doing it her way, and it would be the most cost efficient since we just discussed how cannot afford it at this time. He told me that if I love him and want a baby, then I will do this for him. I tried to explain to him that I am not sure if I am ready for this, and that I don't know if I am comfortable with all of this. Especially with him sleeping with someone else. He brushed that off, telling me that it is "no big deal" if he were to sleep with her and that I am overreacting. That he has stood by while I got my dream and he was left alone/ignored (I never knew he felt this way) and that I owed it to him to let him do this. Today I looked up this woman on Facebook, and she is VERY attractive. I would say that my husband and I are both average looking but she is definitely striking, which makes my anxiety go even higher. Why do this for us? I don't get what she gets out of this. Am I overreacting? This seems completely bizarre for me and I am questioning everything in our relationship, what should I do? tl;dr: Lost our baby last year, husband wants to knock up some work friend since I can no longer conceive, making me feel guilty because I think it is weird. RELEVANT COMMENTS When asked if the friend isn't already pregnant I don't think she is. He told me that they mapped out her cycles (and insinuated that I could help figure out when is best for her) and that we could aim for a January insemination date so that we could have a fall baby. There is no way that if she is already pregnant (assuming 6+ weeks) that they could fool me with a fall baby. Update Nov 29, 2015 (6 days later) Thank you to everyone who commented on my last post and to those who PM’d me. This is long. I spoke with my husband on Tuesday after he got home from work and before I had to leave for work. I explained to him that even though I do want kids down the road, I would not be comfortable with his friend being our surrogate and that this would not change for me, ever. All of it made me uncomfortable and honestly made me question his fidelity. He was shocked by this. His exact words were “Are you saying that I cheated on you?” I laid it out for him, pointing out a lot of things that were pointed out to me from my OP and stated that even if he hadn’t yet physically cheated that he emotionally cheated. He said that he did have an emotional connection with her, but beyond that nothing else. I asked him if they had sex, kissing, anything sexual at all? He was baffled that I would even think this and adamant he did not have any sexual contact with her. He reiterated that he loves me and I am the only one he wants. The whole idea of this was because he wanted to give us a family and help “repair” the loss, this was just a way to do that and he never saw it as cheating because it would be something we would both agree to. I told him that isn't true because he emotionally manipulated me, or tried to, into going along with it. I told him I needed to know what their relationship was like. He admitted that over the past year, even while I was pregnant, he confided in her about my obvious lack of interest in the pregnancy, my disdain towards motherhood, his fear of me hating our baby, and the issues that persisted in our relationship. Apparently she was shocked that I would feel this way towards a baby, she told him that she has only ever wanted to be a mother. Since then they have only gotten closer, but he denies it has ever gotten physical or that he felt any romantic inclinations towards her. He said that the surrogacy was completely her idea and she has been hinting at it for weeks. Telling him how she would carry our baby for us, how he deserves to be a dad, but he informed her that we did not have any frozen eggs so our options were egg donation or adoption, which we couldn’t afford. No problem, she suggested to use her eggs. Which is how the plan took shape. He said that they could do artificial insemination but she said she didn’t want medical records of this, and natural insemination would keep costs down. I asked him what the fuck was he thinking talking to her about stuff like this and thinking that this was okay?! He looked like a deer caught in the headlights. I asked him how he would feel if I did this? If he was the infertile one and I had an attractive doctor friend knock me up with no strings attached at HIS suggestion, how would he feel? He had nothing to say to this. I told him that I felt absolutely betrayed by all of this. Clearly she has some sort of mental health problems and an unhealthy attachment to my husband but beyond that his relationship with her is inappropriate. He said “obviously I shared too much.” No shit. I told him that I am upset that he “forgave” me for the loss of our baby which I had no control over and that he used that to emotionally manipulate me. He apologized for that, he never meant it to come out like that and in no way blames me. After that everything calmed down but I told him I needed some space from him for a bit. He asked if our marriage was over? I told him I didn’t think so, but this has been a really emotionally turbulent few days and I need to process it. He told me that he does not want our marriage to be over if this was something I was considering, he loves me more than anything and cannot bear to lose me over this. That losing our baby was devastating and has made him depressed, confused, and angry but he does not want to lose me at all. I told him he should have thought about that before planning to stick his dick in crazy (not my finest moment). I told him that if he wants to keep open communication, he needs to cut ties with her, obviously he works with her but nothing beyond whatever work contact they have to have, he needs to go to individual counseling and come to at least one counseling session with me per week. Before he left he changed his phone number, blocked her on Facebook and deactivated it. Told me that he would give me access to whatever I wanted to see that the “relationship” is severed and that it was nothing more than what he has told me. His parting words were "I just wanted to build a family with you" which absolutely gutted me. Wednesday afternoon I checked his email, there wasnothing. Nothing in the deleted bin or recover deleted items bin in Outlook. Facebook was hard to look at, there were a lot of chat messages between the two of them spanning the last eight months when he added her on Facebook. Overall his messages were friendly, a few times he was flirty but never sexual or what I what consider too much for what should be friends, but hers were pretty clear in her meaning. The messages are clear, she's making some kind of play for him. I took screen shots of all the conversations (don't worry I triple checked for any deleted messages, hidden apps, or other messaging services) and re-deactivated his Facebook. I have his iPad so I was able to look at the iMessages on there, they appear to delete every 30 days which left me with that to look at. Overall all the texts and chats line up with his story, but the whole exchange about the logistics make me sick. She talks about making the baby as though it's a date, that she doesn't want it to be sterile or feel like she's being used. Her comments were inappropriate but he never stopped her or corrected her. She even insulted me several times when he expressed concern about how I would feel, saying things like "she's cold hearted" and "maybe you should just do this on your own so you don't have to worry about her rejecting the baby," he didn't really stand up for me but said that he didn't think I would do that. It was all very hard to read but I feel better about my decision overall. We didn’t really speak on Wednesday, he checked in a few times but I let him know that we would talk Thursday. Thursday morning he let me know that he turned in his letter of resignation Wednesday morning. He hasn’t heard from her but doesn’t intend to seek her out to say goodbye either. He apologized, he just thought he was doing the right thing and thought this would make me happy. I still feel extremely betrayed, he is still dealing with the loss and other things. We both agreed that our communication has really deteriorated in the past year and that we need to fix this. So, no lawyer, no gym, just therapy for us. tl;dr: Confronted my husband, got the real story, and now we are going to work on things. FINAL COMMENTS [deleted] Jeeeez. I still don't think he understands exactly how bad he messed up, but hopefully he realizes it in therapy. I read your last post, and I'm really surprised he was willing to do all the "right" things ro fix this. If he really is that committed to working things out, there might be hope, and I'm glad you are giving it a try. Even if he doesn't understand the depth of betrayal against you, hopefully he understands how wrong it was to do everything he did and said. Hopefully you can come to some sort of agreement and peace about your future. Best of luck to both of you. OOP I think he talked about it with his brother who was probably like "bro this is absolutely the worst idea you have ever had and she is probably going to drop some divorce documents on you immediately" because when we did talk he mentioned that he thought about this a lot and realized how awful it all sounded after he left. When we spoke Thursday (and in the days since) he seems more aware of how bad this was on his side. ~ MissTheWire OP, I'm so glad he realized the error of his ways regarding this woman and he's doing very concrete things to make this right, but it feels like the bottom line was that he pushed you into having children before you were ready. Is that from severe baby-fever or self-absorption? I guess I'm wondering if his basically ignoring your career dreams/reproductive timetable, blaming your miscarriage on your attitude and then ignoring this woman's obvious scheming have a common root that he needs to work on in therapy. OOP The first time? I think he had baby fever, his two closest friends just became dads and I theorize that he felt left out. We were a "good" age for having kids, good careers, and working on financial stability. It seemed right to him. I wasn't ready, didn't feel that we were ready financially (just bought a condo, owe $$$ in student loans that I want to pay down as much as possible before kids, want to travel a bit) to take on a baby. But I didn't tell that to him which I think is where a lot of our problems started. He didn't ignore me, I didn't speak up. He has always been super supportive of my career, but I guess feels that a lot I put it in front of him. And he wouldn't be wrong, this is something I need to work on because going to work for two days and questioning if my marriage was going to survive made me realize that work is not above my marriage. We clarified a bit on the attitude. He doesn't really blame me, but it was easy to direct his anger at someone rather than just have it bottle up. We need to work on this. ~ IncredibleBulk2 Consider adoption? OOP In a few years, maybe. Either that or getting an egg donor and doing the surrogate thing. I want kids and it's completely possible for us to have multiple but I'm just not ready. I’ve lied to everyone in my life for 20 years that I’m Jewish...
I’ve lied to everyone in my life for 20 years that I’m Jewish... Originally posted by u/fake-jew in r/confessions on 04 Apr 2019 trigger warnings: Nothing, really mood spoilers: Pretty feelgood, overall I’m not jewish, not even a little bit. If you asked me any questions about judaism, I couldn’t tell you, but still, everyone thinks I’m jewish. It all started in high school, 11th grade. I had just moved from California to The South and it was a rough time. I was called every horrible name in the book because I talked different and got the shit beat out of me multiple times. Well I slowly befriended some of the guys on the football team and my closest friend was the center, we’ll call him Greg. Now Greg is a super chill guy compared to everyone around him, but he’s still very very racist and very open about all his opinions. Well one day I’m driving Greg and a few other football players home from school and he makes a comment about synagogues. Without even thinking, I mention that I’ve been to one... and this is where it all started. This prompted one of the other guys to joke that I was a Jew, and trying to be chill (since these were the only friends I had) I went “haha, yep, I’m jewish.” And then that’s when it all went down hill. Greg told everyone on the football team how his new friend from California was a Jew, and they all believed it since most of them thought there were only Jews in California anyways. And the football players spread that to the rest of the school. At this point, I still thought it was a joke and everyone was just jokingly calling me jewish, so I just kept going with it. Then I became known as “The Jewish kid” and started to actually become popular, since everyone wanted to be friends with the different kid, (and the fact my dad had money, a lot compared to the poor area I went to school, so I could afford to buy nice things and people tend to be attracted towards that). And so being Jewish almost became my identity, it became who I was. So whenever someone would ask my religion, I just automatically told them I was jewish. Fast forwards to the end of high school, and the councilors are walking people through scholarship stuff, and my councilor calls me into his office and hand me a slip for a $5,000 Jewish American scholarship. Now as soon as I read jewish American scholarship, I was going to walk out and throw it out, but he made me sit down and fill it out with him, and then took it from me to submit it. I felt horrible for even doing it, but somewhat relieved when I heard that they only gave it to people who were also ethnically jewish, so I knew I wouldn’t get it. I got it. I received a letter in the mail saying I was chosen as the winner of this $5000 scholarship, I got accepted to Dartmouth due to the fact I worked my ass off in high school and was the valedictorian, though my competition wasn’t plentiful to say the least. But I never thought I would have been able to afford it, but this scholarship was huge in helping me towards that. I considered spilling everything then, declining the scholarship, telling everyone at school, telling almost every single form I’ve filled out, saying I’m not actually jewish... I decided to tell my dad and ask him for advice as he’s always been a guy you can talk to about anything whatsoever. So I tell him everything, I tell him about the joke, then the lie, then everything, and now the scholarship (which I hadn’t told any of my family about because 1. I never thought I’d get it, and 2. They’d question why a very not jewish person is getting a jewish American scholarship) and as soon as I told my father, he looked me dead in the eyes with the most serious, disappointed face.... and then burst into tears laughing. The way he reacted, it must’ve been the funniest thing he’d ever heard in his life. He told me he had gotten a letter in the mail asking if I was ethnically jewish for a scholarship I had entered, and being the person he is, he just say the chance for college money and went “yep, jewish” and that was apparently all they need. So my dad convinced me to keep the money and go to my dream college, and I did. As soon as I arrived at university, I was met with some people from the group that gave me this scholarship, some jewish American organization funded by wealthy Israelis, and they told me/enlisted me into all these jewish clubs and they got me set up in a synagogue, and I everyone there (I’d later learn 2 of the people there would be my professors, who were very jewish) and finally they told me they’d set me up with the whole “birthright” thing, where they fly American Jews out to Israel. I was so shocked, I was at my dream school, plus I was being hit with all of this, it was too much. I thought about coming clean a lot of times. But I feel like all the people around me would suddenly feel betrayed and leave me. I became good friends with a lot of people in these jewish clubs, I bonded with my teachers a lot better since they believed I was jewish, I met the most beautiful jewish girl (who I met through her mother, when she came up to me in a cafe, asked if I was jewish, since I was with the local Rabbi, I said yes, and she told me that I’d love her daughter. We went on a date and instantly hit it off) and I got a free trip to Israel. All the while, I was dealing with severe depression since I felt horrible every second of every day, in addition to the already enormous amounts of stress university puts on you. I came so close, so many times to just throw myself off a bridge or tall building, but I could never bring myself to do it. I managed to get all the way through 11 years of college to get my doctorate, got a job at a history museum back on the west coast, married that jewish girl, had a Jewish wedding with her entire family, and my two parents (my dad had spilled the beans to my mom about two days after I told him, she also found it equally as funny) we’ve had 3 little jewish babies, the museum put me in charge of organizing and creating a huge Holocaust/Jewish American history exhibit (even though that’s not my specific field even in the slightest.) And in a few months, when the current Curator retires at the age of 96, I will hopefully be taking his place. (He’s been training me for the job, I’ve worked there the longest, and I’ve made sure that I’m damn good at my job) My life has turned out great but deep down it will always haunt me that my entire life, is built on a lie. My kids lives, my life, my wife’s life, all came from a joke in a car 20 years ago... I was never going to tell a soul this, but today my oldest son (he’s 9) told me that he doesn’t think he believes in god, and I told him I agreed. It was the first time in 20 years that I told the truth about my religion, and didn’t lie. My son wants to tell his mom that he doesn’t want to continue being Jewish and I might use this as my way of getting out as well... I told him we’d tell her tomorrow at dinner and he seems almost as excited as I am, but equally as nervous. Wish us luck, I guess... I still am unsure if I should tell her the whole truth, or if I should just leave it with that I no longer want to be jewish. TL;DR: A friend from 20 years ago made a joke about me being a Jew since I moved there from California. This turned into everyone in my life thinking I’m jewish, causing me to meet a jewish girl, get a free trip to Israel, getting to go to my dream school, everything, but it’s all built on a lie and I feel horrible about it every single day. Telling my wife tomorrow that I’m not jewish, but am still unsure if I should tell her everything. EDIT: Just for clarification, because people have been questioning my use of the word “university” in place for “college”. Yes I know they’re not the same thing, I’ve just been surrounded by British people lately and they all use “university” so I’ve been saying that instead of college. It’s a recently adopted habit and I can assure you I’m American. Born in Folsom California, moving to Orange County and then to Santa Clarita, California where I lived for most of my younger life until my family moved to Americus, Georgia. I can assure you I’m definitely American. And as for my wife not finding out from my side of the family, it’s mainly due to the fact that we don’t talk to my side of the family for personal reasons and I haven’t talked to them in years, and she’s only ever met them once at the wedding, but she also wants nothing to do with them. I’ve decided I’m just going to tell her I’m not jewish. I won’t tell her I’ve lied about being Jewish for all these years, but I’m just going to tell her that I’m not jewish. Someone also said that since bother sides of my family are Czech, there’s a good chance I’m Jewish, so I’m thinking of doing a DNA test soon. Also when I said, “I know nothing about Judaism” that was an extreme exaggeration. I’ve obviously picked up a lot of knowledge over the years and I think my wife may have an idea due to the fact, whenever a Jewish holiday is coming up, she’ll remind me about it and tell me when it is/ what it’s for if I don’t already know. I’ll update later tonight on how it goes! EDIT 2: So I talked to her and I decided to just tell her everything.... and it didn’t go like I expected. She told me she had a feeling I wasn’t jewish from the beginning but never married me just because I was jewish, but married me for me, regardless of my faith. She said that she was sorry that I felt like I had to hide this from her for so many years and that I don’t have to pretend to be jewish if I don’t want to, but like a lot of people have commented, I do feel sort of culturally jewish now. I definitely identify more as a member of the Jewish community than I do any others. We’re not going to pressure any of our kids into Judaism and we’re going to let them decide what they want to do for themselves... and my wife and I agreed that it’d be for the best if we gave back since all the opportunities afforded to me came from the Jewish community, we’re going to get involved with an organization and we’re donating to 3 different scholarships for $5,000 each, and try and help fund birthright trips whenever we can. I’d like to thank everyone who’s commented with advice and hopefully this can be a new chapter in my life! DO NOT COMMENT ON LINKED POSTS. I spent £17,900 converting aspects of my office (break room, desk, elevator, and disabled bathroom) to make it accessible for an employee with a disability who requested these changes. They left two weeks after the work was finished. Can I go after them for some costs in small claims court?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Antique_Bet_3553 Originally posted to r/LegaladviceUK I spent £17,900 converting aspects of my office (break room, desk, elevator, and disabled bathroom) to make it accessible for an employee with a disability who requested these changes. They left two weeks after the work was finished. Can I go after them for some costs in small claims court? Thanks to u/soayherder + u/SmartQuokka for suggesting this BoRU Trigger Warnings: possible ableism Original Post: November 25, 2025 They've decided to move back down to Cornwall with family. Another staff member who she is friendly with said she'd been planning to leave since August. This means that this staff member knew they weren't going to be around to use these adjustments. I spent a load of money renovating an old elevator, lowering countertops in the breakroom to make them accessible, and getting a special desk area to help them with their disability. These are all things which they requested along with a doctors note explaining their disability, and a copy of their PIP decision which showed they were awarded standard daily living and why. (editor's note: Personal Independence Payment, UK welfare benefit to help with extra living costs for people with physical / mental health condition or disability) We met several times through August and September to discuss their needs and whether there was any compromises I could make to reduce costs. She stated there wasn't. Never once did she mention that she was leaving in November. Work finished on the 10th November. She resigned on Friday 21st without any notice. I don't want to sound spiteful, but is there any way I can reclaim any of these costs? The disabled bathroom had to be widened and have special rails fitted to accommodate them. Additionally, a special desk was purchased for them and break room counters were lowered. None of these things actually benefit any of my other staff who aren't disabled. The whole budget that would've gone on Christmas bonuses has been completely blown on someone who wasn't even intending to stay with us. I do have emails from this staff member to her friend where she discusses moving back with her family in Cornwall and her plans. It's crystal clear that she was intending to leave in November. I've got that in writing. It's worth noting that one reason behind these high costs was that I had to pay a premium to get the work done quickly. While this was happening I permitted this staff member to work from home as and when they needed to in line with their disabilities. I never required them to come into the office until the accomodation work was done. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: So was this a job that could be done from home? OOP: Not fully. We operate a 3/2 model. She was fully remote given her disability with staff in the office picking up things she couldn’t do remotely. Commenter 2: It doesn't seem like a crime has been committed here - not even a civil one. They haven't misrepresented anything - nor entered into a contract that would require they pay for it. You seem to have done everything in line with the Eq Act 2010. (editor's note: UK act - the Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society) You could write this off as renovations and put in your job advertisements: "disability friendly office: lift, disabled toilet, etc etc etc". And if you sell the building (if it is yours to sell) later down the line - you could advertise that as part of the sale. OOP: True. Most likely avenue I'll go down. I'm just furious and upset right now. The whole team and I all bent over backwards for her. She used it once when I told her the renovations were complete and she needed to start working 3/2 hybrid with her colleagues. Then she just left. She really put me and her colleagues under immense pressure to accommodate her. Her teammates had to do things that needed done in office. They drove stuff out to her house when she asked for it. We're all just disgusted by her behaviour. Commenter 3: Emphasis is on reasonable adjustments. If OP didn't think they were reasonable it should have been said when they were requested. As the employee has been working from home for several months as needed, that could have been made a long term reasonable adjustment Vs the costly adjustments in-office. I assume OP has a reason for this but I can't think what it would be if WFH PRN has been managed successfully for so long. OOP: Her colleagues have been doing the parts of her job that need done in the office. The agreement was always that she'd be back on a 3/2 hybrid when renovations were complete. OOP explains more about the emails between the staff member and her friend about moving, the adjustments at the office and Christmas bonuses OOP: Emails were sent on our office Outlook system. Supplied by a staff member she was friends with who is now furious at her because the Xmas bonus has been spent on this. I usually give all my staff £1k to £2k extra at Christmas depending on how well we do. This nonsense has left us with no spare cash to do anything more than maybe £50 each. I'm furious and embarrassed about this. + 15 staff members are going without a ~£1000 Christmas bonus because she lied that she needed these accommodations made, when I have email receipts proving she never was never going to be using them. In September she sent an email to her friend confirming she was going to Cornwall in November. Despite this, she kept pushing for adjustments to be made during this time and stated ahe could not come into the office until they were complete. She NEVER mentioned to me once that she was going to be leaving. Commenter 4: Why didn't you just let them permanently work remote? You did this to yourself by requiring them to report to the office. OOP: Because her colleagues were having to do the aspects of her job on our site that she wasn't coming in for. She also used to work in-office full time pre-covid. She was the one employee who refused to move to hybrid with the others. Commenter 5: Just to be a little different here, just want to say… what a fucker. Lots of time, money and effort and for what feels right now for nothing. Lots of good advice here but just wanted to validate your feelings of frustration and bewilderment. Let’s hope they don’t ask for a reference!!! This definitely feels unfair! Hopefully a lot of the work can be tax deductible maybe!? OOP: Yeah, it's all a business expense. I'd still rather have given that money to my staff though. I feel like complete shit not giving an Xmas bonus this year. That's why i'm up at 2am. Looking to see what I can do. I can probably manage £200 each from my personal savings. Add on some extra by taking her off payroll. Maybe make £500 if I'm lucky. Commenter 6: You are out of luck then. Sounds like the job can be done just as easily from home, and your arbitrary demand to make someone work from an office instead is a 17k mistake on your part. It’s tough to feel sorry for you, because all of this could have been avoided if you simply acted reasonably to begin with. OOP: There are aspects which can only be done in person. I dont want to risk identifying my business - but it can only be done partially-remote. Even during lockdown we needed 3-4 staff rotating in to the site. Update: £17,900 spent converting office for employee who left.: November 27, 2025 (two days later) Update: £17,900 spent converting office for employee who left. Good evening everyone, Just wanted to follow up now that a little bit of time has passed and I have a clearer head. I've consulted with a solicitor who advised there was a strong case for pursuing this employee for costs, however, it would be disadvantageous for PR reasons. In light of that I've decided not to pursue them for costs at present. I wasn't particularly clear in my previous post, but the office I was in already had a functional elevator, disabled bathroom etc. My employee's disability, size and weight meant that they were unable to use the existing elevator and bathroom which is why she specifically demanded that they be changed. I've also seen a lot of comments and got a lot of messages asking why my employee couldn't just keep working from home given that they'd been working remotely since 2019. Not sure where this came from - it isn't true. Our whole staff (including the employee with a disability) was 100% in office before covid. She was working in our office in person for years before Covid without reporting any accessibility issues. After covid (in March 2020) we all went remote apart apart from 3-4 staff who rotated to do the in-office duties. This didn't work well and we adopted a hybrid policy for all staff. The employee with a disability was the sole one who refused to return to the office when hybrid working was reintroduced. There were a lot of comments saying I should have sought funding from DWP. We tried that avenue at the time through this government scheme. There was no funding for the type of adjustments that she was requesting be made. Other people asked why I "did nothing for 5 years" and then "rushed this through." This also isn't true. During those 5 years I made a concerted and continuous effort to bring staff back into the office in a hybrid pattern. This staff member was not the only one who required adjustments and I have a fairly large team. During this time I engaged with this employee who had a disability, worked with them applying and enquiring with the DWP's access to work program etc. Speaking with the solicitor and showing him what we had before, he said it was clear my office already met the requirements under the Equality Act 2010. (With the exception of the lowered counters in breakroom, which were installed.) The improved elevator and the wider disabled bathrooms which we now have go beyond the requirements of the Act. On the subject of the Christmas bonus, through a combination of no longer having to pay for the employee who left and selling some of my personal stocks/shares I've been able to partially-fund this year's Christmas bonus. Relevant / Top Comments Commenter 1: Can you please explain how you were going to pay the staff bonuses before this staff member quit? Or was your plan all along to blame this staff member for the lack of bonus this year, even if she had stayed? That’s something that wasn’t clear from your last post, and it could impact on any potential litigation. OOP: Staff are a lot more accepting of not getting a bonus if it means that a colleague with a disability is getting the support that they need. Staff are not accepting of a colleague making demands, pushing her work onto them, refusing to come back in when everyone else did with hybrid, and then disappearing when the company has spent £17k making adjustments specifically for her. Commenter 2: I'm not surprised you found a solicitor who was willing to take your money but it's surprising your HR employee didn't tell you that you were wrong before your consultation. Commenter 3: Whichever solicitor told you that was taking you for a ride. You say the work cost more because you had to do it fast, but it seems like the deadline was something imposed on your end not anybody else's? Surely they could have kept WFH whilst the renovations were carried out? The stuff about previously not needing adjustments 6 years ago is irrelevant, people's circumstances and health changes over time. Presumably her GP and the PIP assessor knew more about her health situation than you do Commenter 4: As someone who specialised in equality act related reasonable adjustments for disabled employees, I’m still extremely doubtful that you have a case, and doubtful that the adjustments you made go “beyond reasonable” In part because you actually made them. If they were truly unreasonable, you wouldn’t have been able to put them in place. Found this little guy outside my apartment building… I think he might’ve just adopted me
Sooo last night I came home kinda late and saw this adorable dog just sitting near the entrance of my building. At first, I thought he belonged to someone here, but I asked around and nobody claimed him. He looked so scared and tired… and honestly, when he looked at me with those big brown eyes, I couldn’t just walk away. I brought him in, gave him some water, and today I bought him Purina One dry food (it’s what Google said is good for a start lol). He seems to like it! I live alone and this is literally my first time ever taking care of a pet. Any advice on what to do next? Should I take him to a vet first, or wait to see if someone posts about a missing dog in the area? He’s honestly the sweetest thing, keeps following me around the apartment and wagging his tail every time I look at him. I think I’m already in love. Any tips for a total newbie dog mom are welcome! Also, is Purina One okay for him or should I try something else? submitted by /u/AcceptableShallot148 to r/DogAdvice [link] [comments]

New Update 2.5 years later: My son's friend's parents want to adopt him
I am NOT the Original Poster. That is still livinginfearmom. She posted in r/TrueOffMyChest and her own profile! Previous BORU here. New Update marked with ****\* OOP herself let me know about her update. Do Not Comment on Original Posts. Latest update is 7 days old. Trigger Warning: Attempted kidnapping Mood Spoiler: happy ending!!! Original Post: April 10, 2023 *All names have been changed to protect everyone involved. I (24F) am a single mom to my son, Owen (8). It’s been just us since Day 1. His father isn’t in the picture and has been able to avoid child support for years now (yes, I’ve tried everything). My own parents disowned me. I had to drop out of high school and have worked a myriad of jobs since then to keep us afloat. We aren’t on the poverty line by any means, but we definitely live paycheck to paycheck, in a one bedroom apartment. It’s not ideal and I hope within the next couple of years, we’ll be some place bigger. For now, it’s our situation. I’ve raised Owen to know that money isn’t everything. We may not have a lot. He won’t always have the newest this or that. But we have each other. The two of us are very close. He has never gone without the basics, but I admit, he doesn’t get a lot of fun extras. I try to save a little here and there to make birthdays and holidays fun, but it’s still never anything glamorous. And I think Owen was fine with that. Until recently, anyway. In our area, all the public schools are based on a lottery system. So, your child has a fair shot of going to any of them, so long as you put in their name. Our neighborhood school is not great and in a pretty crappy area, so I decided to put him in a different one across town. It’s near my job, so it works out. Last year, when he was in 2nd grade, he met Charlie. They began hanging out a lot after school, with Owen going to his place. I met Charlie’s parents, Nate and Paige a couple of times before this began. They seemed very nice and supportive. Owen always had a great time at their house. Charlie occasionally came to our apartment, but usually they were at his place. Which made sense. I work and there’s really not much for them to do here, even when I am off. Summer breaks are easy to find care, as there are several free or low cost camps that I can put Owen in. It’s the shorter breaks, such as Christmas and spring that are harder. Cam space is limited. Spring Break of 2022, I managed to just miss registration. Paige is a stay-at-home-mom and offered to take Owen for the week. I was hesitant to ask so much of her but she insisted. He had a really fun time with them. They did a ton of activities and Paige refused my attempts to pay her back at least some (I couldn’t afford all). I admit, I did feel a tad uncomfortable with her spending this much on my son, but at the same time, I didn’t want to deprive Owen of this stuff. Summer came and while I did get Owen into camp, he spent a ton of time with Charlie as well. He ended up going on vacation with them. I was again, very hesitant, but the experience was something I could never give Owen and it wasn’t too far away. He had a blast. I kept telling Nate and Paige that there’s no way I could ever pay them back and they kept insisting that they loved having Owen around. They told me what a great kid he is. Sweet, respectful. At one point, I really pressed Paige as to why she was so insistent on having Owen around so much. That’s when she told me that they never planned for Charlie to be an only child, but all attempts at giving him a sibling just didn’t happen. They know that Owen will never make up for not having a brother, but if they can give him a consistent playmate so he’s not lonely, they’ll do it. Should this have been a red flag? Maybe. But at the same time, I found it sweet that the boys considered each other brothers. I thought it was innocent. Surely, Paige and Nate knew the truth. Right? Right? This continued for a bit and come Christmas Break of 2022, Paige and Nate insisted that I not even bother to try to get Owen into a camp, they’d take care of him for me. I was grateful. They ended up getting him more Christmas gifts than I did. I tried to set my pride aside because it was about Owen, not me. This is still when things finally started seeming off to me. I understood a gift on his birthday and while they didn’t get him as many gifts at they got Charlie, it was a lot more than you would typically get your kid’s friend. Fast forward to now. Spring Break was last week and this time, Paige and Nate didn’t just offer to take care of him during the day while I worked, they asked if Owen could spend the entire week at their house. Honestly, it meant I could pick up some more shifts and save up for the bike Owen wants for his birthday. So, I said yes. I went to pick him up on Saturday afternoon. The kids were playing out back, so Nate and Paige asked to talk to me. They sat me down and said they love Owen and he’s always such a joy to have. I thanked them profusely for all they’d done for him. Paige suggested that Owen stay a little longer. I pointed out Easter was Sunday plus school started up on Monday. They said they could take him to school. I felt weird and said, no, it was time for Owen to come home. That’s when Nate suggested that Owen stay with them long term. I could still see him, but they would take care of him. I thought they were joking and said “Like what, you’d be his guardians or something?” They got quiet and the reality rushed over me. I pointed out that this wasn’t a movie. They can’t just get custody. They started spouting some legal stuff about how I could assign them as guardians and they would help make this transition smooth. They told me to think about Owen and what’s best for him. I told them there was no way in hell I was going to give up my son. I grabbed Owen and we left. I’ve blocked their numbers. Owen has no clue what’s going on. I’m keeping him home tomorrow and took the day off work to figure some stuff out. Legally, they can’t take him. But now I know what they want and I’m terrified. I don’t want him going back to that school. Do we move? I’m so lost. And I feel so stupid because looking back, all the warning signs were there. I know Owen is going to be devastated losing Charlie, Paige and Nate. How am I ever going to explain it to him? Relevant Comments: In response to some (now removed) accusations of neglect: I can take care of my kid. He’s never gone hungry. The lights are always on. He has clothes (albeit sometimes from good will or donations). We lived in our car briefly when I was 17 but I pulled us out of that situation and we’ll never be in that place again. I have health insurance. He goes to the doctor. Has his vaccines. He just doesn’t have an iPad or summer vacations. What he does have is love. His favorite stuffed giraffe that I got him when I was pregnant. A love for the park. He isn’t deprived. He has a good life. I love him and I’m never giving him up. Maybe those parents have been turned down by foster/adoption agencies: I’ve suspected this too. It seems like they don’t want another child, they want Charlie to have a permanent playmate/buddy. And I don’t know much about the system, but if they were as honest as they were with me, I could see them turned down. Update (Comments): Later that day Post won’t let me update directly so here it is in the comments Update* There’s no way I can respond to everyone so I just want to say thank you for the advice. While I understand those saying they potentially meant well and weren’t trying to be offensive…it’s still a risk I can’t take. It’s not like they offered to take him every so often. They wanted him full time, permanently. To those who said I should just let them…please pass me whatever drugs you are on. I will never give up my son. Do we have the newest this or that? No. We have our needs met. I love my son and I am not letting him go. As for everyone else, I took your advice and reached out to the school. I told them that Paige and Nate are no longer allowed to pick up Owen and explained I do not feel safe with them around each other. They understood. There’s not much they can do outside making sure they never pick him up. It’s too late in the year to move classes but next year, Charlie and Owen will not be in the same class. I notified the police but again, they can’t do much. We have zero in writing and a simple request to have my child isn’t really breaking any laws. Unfortunately all I can do is hope they don’t try anything. I still haven’t spoken to Owen. I think it’s fine if he talks to Charlie and plays with him at school, but I have to find a way to explain why they can’t have play dates or sleepovers. As well as to never to go anywhere near Nate and Paige. I guess that’ll come in time. I’ll update again if anything happens. I’m hoping this is the end. As some of Nate and Paige’s defenders said, they did take my “no” well. So hopefully they realize how totally out of bounds they were and leave us alone. Update 2 (Comments but it only shows up on OOP's profile ): April 11, 2023 (next day) Monday night, I talked to Owen and explained that Nate and Paige were not safe. He was confused and I explained that they wanted to take him away from me. I think it spooked him as he started crying, saying he didn’t want to leave me and he didn’t want to see them again. I held him and assured him he wasn’t going anywhere. He understands he is never to go anywhere with them and that the school is taking measures to protect him. I said he could still talk and play with Charlie at school. He said he doesn’t want to. I was honestly worried he’d hate me but you all were right. Telling him the full story made him realize how serious it was. He understands the gifts and trips will stop and says he’s alright with it. Also, I wanted to address one last thing: I’ve gotten a few people offering me money or gifts. Please do not do that. I am very appreciative but that was not the purpose of this post. If you wish to do something, donate to your local shelter or other charity. Owen and I are not in need, I’d rather see it go to people who need it. I didn’t see Nate or Paige at drop off, nor have I gotten any contact (but then again, I did block them everywhere). Thank you all for your help. I’ll update if anything else happens (hopefully it won’t). Update Post: April 14, 2023 (4 days later) I have tried to post this update in True Off My Chest but it keeps getting autodeleted. Since I have so many followers, I figured I'd update here and hopefully it gets around. Well, what everyone feared would happen, did. Tuesday, he returned to school. I told him he could still talk with and play with Charlie. I was hesitant to drop him off but figured you can’t live in fear. Most afternoon, my son takes the bus to a local rec center for aftercare. I had already told the school everything and that Nate and Paige were not to pick Owen up. I managed to call and even make sure he got on the bus. Aftercare was also made aware of the change in pick up list. Well, a half hour later, I get a call that Paige had tried to pick up my son. The front desk refused to release him. Didn’t say why, just that she was no longer on the list. She wouldn’t leave and the police were called. She was escorted out of the building. While she wasn’t brought to jail, there is a police report and I am using this to go to court and get an order of protection. Paige and Nate are also banned from the rec center so if they *do* show up, they will get arrested for trespassing. The police are working on ways to protect us and the local social services office has been made aware of the situation, so should they try to make a claim, they’re aware of the situation. Relevant Comment: Commenter: Thank you for the update. I am pulling for you! Great job on getting your ducks in a row at school and after care. They are starting to show their true colors. Please keep a careful eye out and be prepared. Talk with your son some more and make sure he understands a little better to not leave with them. OOP: Thank you. I spoke to him Monday evening, so he knew what he was walking into on Tuesday. It freaked him out a lot and he said he absolutely didn't want to leave me. So, he's aware and knows to never go with them. NEW UPDATE *****Update Post 3: September 28, 2025 (2.5 years later)****\* Title: An update on our lives, 2 years later I hadn't realized it had fully been nearly 2.5 years since I gave an update to our lives, but I thought about this whole saga recently, found the account, and realized 3k+ of you folow this now, plus it seems I still get requests for an update. After this happened, I wanted to stay in the area we lived in. If anything, because I couldn't afford to move us. I ended up transferring Owen to a different after-school program. He still remained friends with Charlie at school. Apparently, even Charlie would call his parents weird and said he was angry with them for making it so Owen couldn't go over there after school. The rest of the year passed by awkwardly, but initially, the school did a good job of making sure Nate and Paige were not anywhere near my son. I was told they wouldn't be allowed to volunteer anymore (as Paige often did, prior to everything). Summer soon came, Owen started his usual camps, and I thought all was well. I had initially been told that the boys would not be put into the same class the following year. (It had been too late in the year to move either of the boys) But when I brought Owen to school on the first day, I saw Charlie's name on the door. It's a small school, and they have a unique last name, so I knew it wasn't a coincidence. I spoke with the principal and was told it was impossible to keep them in separate classes and there were factors I just "couldn't possibly understand". I regretfully didn't fight as hard, because I assumed Paige and Nate were still banned from volunteering. It was like a horror movie receiving a letter from the room moms of the class (typical letter I receive every year talking about fundraising, volunteer opportunities, when they raise money for teacher gifts, etc). Paige's name was right at the bottom. I once again spoke to the principal and was told that they couldn't keep Paige away from the school. She donated a lot of money, was great with the kids. They said since we had no incidents in 5 months at that point, we had to let it go. I tried to. I thought, maybe things have changed. But it brought me so much anxiety every time I thought about that woman near my son. The school was refusing to protect him. What if things hadn't changed? I debated switching schools but this was the best in our area, and I couldn't afford private. I prepared my son. He said he wouldn't try to go with her and would scream if she tried to take him. Sure enough, first class party of the year, my son said Paige was there, and Owen said she kept trying to talk to him. She kept asking him to come over and even wanted my new phone number (I changed it for obvious reasons after everything went down). Thankfully, Owen knew better. But I just saw the rest of the year flashing before my eyes. Paige finding ways to be around my son, potentially breaking him down. Since the school didn't give a shit, I had nightmares of them letting her kidnap him. I knew we couldn't stay long, but again, I was broke, working a crap job, and I couldn't just pack up and leave. So, I started applying to some new jobs out of our city. As it was, I had one job working in retail but I picked up house cleaning shifts and occasionally some babysitting shifts in between. I took a chance and applied for a live-in nanny position in a city about 3 hours away. I didn't think I'd have a shot at it, especially as I had a kid. But, I met with the parents and they were so kind, so sweet. They were more than happy to let me bring Owen with me and let us live with them. They had an in-law suite I could live in as long as I was working there. It was only one bedroom, but Owen and I were used to that. He was a little sad about leaving his friends, but we jumed at the opportunity. I admit, I was nervous to put ourselves in a similar situaiton as before. What if these people enticed my son and wanted to take him? But, thankfully, they weren't like that. They were kind to Owen, but they maintained boundaries. I eventually told them our story and they were horrified that this had ever happened to us, and assured me they would never try to take my son. I was making better money living with them, and since I didn't have rent or utilities to worry about, I was able to save up more than usual. Owen thrived in his new school. The best part was, he got to spend time with me and the little ones I took care of. No more crazy hours, no more after school programs. After 8 years, we finally caught a break. The family recently outgrew their need for a nanny, but they were happy to help me find a new job. This position isn't live-in, but I was able to save up to put a down payment on a condo! Something I never thought would happen. For the first time in 10 years, Owen has his own room! Something that both excited him, but he was also a little scared. With the help of my old bosses (who are now good friends of ours), we were able to decorate. And my new bosses are so kind and again, totally fine with me bringing their baby with me to pick up Owen and having him around. I haven't heard from Nate and Paige since April 2023. My son occasionally mentions Charlie, and I know he misses his buddy, but he's also relieved about where we are. I hope for Charlie's sake that his parents have calmed down, maybe they've learned their lesson. If anything, so they won't prey on another woman in my situation. I don't speak to anyone from our old city (no friends there), so I have no way of knowing. Sorry if that's not a fun update. But, that's where we are. Happy, healthy, and doing well. I'm 26 now, but many days, feel like I'm 42. I'm in a new relationship now, dating seriously for the first time since Owen was born. I have a group of friends who are also nannies. It took me 8.5 years to gain a support system. Still haven't spoken to my parents. Owen's father will never be a part of the picture, but we finally have a family. Still, he often tells me that if all of it went away like Nate and Paige did, he'd be happy with just us. God, he knows how to make his mama cry. Anyway, thank you all for the support and concern over the years. Much love to you all. submitted by

AITA for Refusing to Co-Sign My Sister’s Mortgage After My Parents Went Behind My Back?
I (28F) have been busting my butt for years to save for my own house. I work in software, so I make decent money, but it still takes forever to build up a good down payment. Meanwhile, my younger sister (25F) is in grad school with barely any credit. Our parents (both mid-50s) found a house near them and decided she needs it. They made an offer—without telling me—and now the deal only goes through if I co-sign. The problem? I had no clue they’d do this. My parents basically dropped a bomb: “You have the best credit score—co-sign so your sister can get the house!” They also hinted I should chip in for the down payment because “you’ve got the money.” If I co-sign, I’ll be on the hook if my sister can’t pay. She’s still in school, has debt, and zero backup plan. The bank might also reject my future mortgage application since they’ll see I’m already tied to another loan. But my parents say I’m “selfish” and “forgetting family values.” My sister’s calling me a monster for leaving her “stranded,” and my mom threatened to cut off any future financial help (like wedding money) if I don’t help right now. Some relatives think it’s insane my parents tried to rope me into this after they already made the offer. Others say I should just do it for “the family’s sake.” I feel guilty, but also mad they put me in this spot. AITA for protecting my own finances, or are they wrong for strong-arming me into co-signing a mortgage I never wanted in the first place? EDIT: I’m actually adopted lmao forgot to mention in my confused and angry state. My parents adopted me when I was very young because they’d been struggling to conceive. A few years later, they had my younger sister naturally, which was a huge deal to them—she was their “miracle baby.” Ever since, it’s felt like my role in the family became “the older, adopted one,” while she was the golden child who could do no wrong. Growing up, I was expected to pitch in more, be more responsible, and generally look out for my sister. I worked my butt off in school, snagged scholarships, and eventually landed a good job in software. All the while, I felt like my family mostly saw me as the “fallback option” in case anyone needed financial or emotional support. Now that I’m actually building my own life—saving for a house, focusing on my career—I’m realizing how my success just makes me look like a bigger piggy bank to my parents. The more independent I become, the clearer it is that I need to separate myself from the constant guilt trips and the unspoken expectation that I’ll always bail them (or my sister) out. I love them, but I can’t keep sacrificing my own future to maintain a dynamic where I’m never the priority. So thank you all for the wake up call. update submitted by /u/fancyapanda to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

When I adopted Lulu about 3 years ago, she hated to be touched and would never let me hold her. She hid under my bed for months. I always respected her boundaries and now, after years of building her trust, she has become a pro cuddler. I’m so proud of how far she’s come and love her so much.
