Baby Quilts Patterns Free

Hello friends! I have been working tirelessly on this gorgeous appliqué quilt top and have finally picked out a backing fabric (hardest thing ever imho). I have done some smaller quilted projects in the past and have only made one other *actual* quilt which was a baby blanket. I am pretty new to free motion quilting but getting better and think I want to do some sort of meandering pattern for this quilt (also still deciding if I quilt over the appliqué?). Since I haven’t done a larger project like this before I’m getting stage fright and really want to set myself up for success- what methods do you guys do in terms of setting up your quilting process? Stencils vs rulers, tailors chalk vs pencil vs air erase pens? Just full sending it?!?! What are we doing here? Any advice is appreciated!!! Also- any tips on binding is also appreciated, I’m thinking of doing it by hand just because in the past when I’ve done it with my machine it was horrid and I had to go over it again. I had SO much fun making this quilt as a baby shower gift for a really special little one! It was a really fun make (even though there were a lot of REALLY small squares, haha), but I love how it all came together! I recently purchased a used sit-down long arm, and this was truly my first attempt at free-motion quilting, but the woodgrain look stitch turned out exactly as I had hoped!! What pattern should I finish this quilt in? Diagonal, straight lines hugging the seams, stitch in the ditch? Added pics with markings for clarity. It’s a baby quilt and about 30x30inches I have a regular sewing machine (also pictured) and have never done patterns/free motion but I I’m willing to try! Especially if there’s a good YouTube tutorial I can follow. Honestly I’m not sure if free motion is possible with my machine or if I’m using the right terminology? Hi quilters! I'm new to quilting, and want to make a friend a baby quilt, that could also function as a wall hanging if they prefer. I'm looking for a small quilt pattern, no bigger than 1m x 1m (cot, pram size), that is relatively modern, simple, minimalist and/or has a central motif that would look amazing on a wall if so! I am just getting into quilting and when I look at others quilts and patterns for inspiration, I see way too many swastikas. I don’t know if I believe that every pattern designer is naive to this issue and it’s a mistake, some are just too apparent. So does quilting have a decent amount of Nazis participating or do pattern designers not care to check their designs? One is clearly worse than the other but I can’t support either. If it comes to there are a decent amount of Nazis that are into quilting, I’ll wipe my hands clean and walk away. But if it’s “accidental” all of the time, why isn’t there bigger push back to make designers pay more attention to their designs? how do you all do it!?! I’m new to quilting. I’ve made 2 baby blankets and and working on a larger one. I LOVED the bang quilts. I’ve got a handle on the piecing and the binding….but I’m always at a loss for deciding how to quilt the layers together! Also, handling the larger quilt without constant pulling and tugging is way more of a challenge than I expected. If I look at patterns it’s detailed about the top but then they just say now quilt it! lol Any tips, resources, or videos you all recommend to help me figure this out? ive been doing a crosshatch pattern but it’s so hard to manage the quilt…is free motion easier and should I learn that? Thank you all so much for the helpful advice on this, my first real quilt. (Actual first quilt was a throw-it-together disaster some years ago.) it’s quilted, bound, and washed. I decided to dive in with the FMQ. If you look closely, you can see where I started out with a larger scale meander and went tighter with it as I quilted. Everything aside from the batting and cotton quilting thread was from my stash! Details: - Pattern is called the Spinner Quilt from The Little Mushroom Cap blog. (I got the pattern for subscribing to her blog.) I also did her online free-motion quilting bootcamp. It was a great introduction to FMQ (price: $50). Full disclosure: I did zero shopping around, so there might be better classes out there, but this worked great for me. - Pieced fabric is a jelly roll from V & Co (for Moda Fabrics) called Ombré Confetti. - Bias binding was surprise stash find! Ombré teal quilting cotton? Where did it come from? Who knows? Probably one of my Stonemountain fugue states. - Backing is from my late brother’s quilting stash, which I inherited. I just finished this quilt for my future nephew. The baby shower is in a few weeks and I can’t wait to gift it! My brother and sister in law knew that I was going to be gifting them a quilt, but decided to give me free rein on the design choices which was a bit daunting. While gathering inspo (mostly by searching this Reddit) I realized there weren’t very many modern baby boy quilts out there so I’m posting so that maybe someone can get some inspiration for their future project :) The pattern was Rugby by Lella Boutique and it was super easy to follow and beginner friendly. I got all of the fabric from SugarQuilts on Etsy. I absolutely LOVED the selection they had and everything arrived in great condition with lots of size options! Two baby quilts for twin girls. Both are made with fabrics from a bundle from Craftsy (RIP) from years ago, along with some added fat quarters. The patterns are both free, basically stack and whack, and came together quickly. Here is the pattern and written tutorial to make your calico critters a little work vests. The links to the pdf patterns will be in the comments. They are based on the vest available from the pdf books, with a few modifications to make it look more like a work vest. The pdf is 8.5 by 11 inches, there is a one cm square for scale. If you dont have a printer you can enlarge the pdf on your screen using a ruler to make sure the square is the right size, and trace it on a pice of paper. This pattern is a bit trickier, at least trickier than the coat pattern I shared previously, and I think my instructions may complicate things more lol. So some experience is recommended. BABY VEST INSTRUCTIONS Cut out pattern from fabric. Because it’s so small, there’s not much room for folding back the seam allowance to hide the raw edges. So choose a fabric that wont fray, or use fray check on the raw edges. I used a thick woven fabric and sealed the edges with fray check. These vests work well with stiffer fabric, like real work vests. I didn’t have blue fabric so I used fabric paint to paint my pieces, which made them stiff. It’s not necessary, I just wanted to let you guys know. The edges where you see the dotted lines are what will be the side seams. Glue those together, or sew on the line indicated, and you’re basically done! Try it on your critter and add details! ADULT VEST INSTRUCTIONS Cut out vest pattern from fabric. Because this one is bigger, there’s not much is a lot of folding back we have to do to keep the edges clean, so choose a thinner fabric than for the baby. A normal cotton fabric like the ones you use in quilts is good. (Idk how to explain it lol, but it’s the most common fabric available wherever you get fabric.) I also painted this one, which made it nice and stiff. Seal the raw edges with fray check to keep things neat and clean. We now have to fold back all the seam allowance and glue it back on the wrong side. If this is your first time sewing, I recommend taking the sewing pattern and cutting on the inner darker line so you’re left with the smaller piece. Place this piece on your fabric and trace, so now you have a guide on where to fold. Make many little cuts around the armholes and curves, only cutting to that line you just traced. If you are more experienced, you can eyeball it, which is what I did. Now take those seam allowances and glue them, leaving the neat folded edge on the good side. This takes a little bit of time and patience, especially for the curves. Repeat all steps for the pockets: cut, fold back and glue edges. You may not need to seal the edges with fray check for the pockets, since they are handled less. Try the vest on your critter, and glue the pockets on where they look nice. You’ve made a vest! Now add some details DETAILS I based my details off of my actual vest. If you’re making one to match your vest from another workplace, you’ll need to get creative! To make the name tag, I cut out the shape from white paperboard. I couldn’t get the shape perfect on the smaller vest, it was too tiny, so I took some creative liberties. I used acrylic paint and dotting tools to paint the detail on the tag, and a pen to add some marks to represent a name. Then I used white acrylic paint and a tiny brush to paint on the letters! Just finished and shipped this baby quilt off to my cousin. Based on an Pinterest post she saw. The hardest part was the scallop edge, anyone got any advice on that process? I ended up using my free motion foot to baste the edges before trimming and putting the binding on, then machine sewed binding to the front and hand sewed the back down. But it was finicky the whole process and likes to curl on the edges post washing. Hello lovely and creative quilters! I need some advice. My best friend just had a baby and I am working on a quilted gift for her. I have two questions: 1) should I do a wall hanging or a baby quilt? I’ve made a few baby quilts for friends over the years and it’s a toss up whether they actually use the quilt or not, despite me saying please use it, wash it, love it! If you were a new mom would you think this pattern to be too “fancy” to actually use? 2) any suggestions for border patterns? Currently, the 2 pieces together are 10” x 25” I chose to do the fox and the hound as a centre panel because it’s one of her favourite Disney movies and she lives in England so the fox and hound motif is fitting I think. Hi! I am currently taking a free motion class at my LQS, I’m barely ok at free motion, but I have zero skills with creating layouts. I’ve been sitting on this project until I get better, but the event this gift is for is approaching, so I gotta start it soon. How would you quilt this?With like an all over background fill or would you quilt each element separately? It will be used as a blanket, not a hanging or decoration. I haven’t made the quilt sandwhich yet to the batting is TBD. I made this pattern as a baby blanket and I quilted straight lines using a wavy stitch. I used baby blue/white variegated thread. It looked fine, but wasn’t very interesting. Random info- I’m going to free motion this on my Solaris, not a long arm. With the border (not shown in the photo) this quilt is too big to do edge to edge in a hoop. I did buy some stencil from Amazon, but they are too flimsy so I don’t trust they won’t break or slide under the ruler foot so I’m gonna just do it by hand or with a straight ruler. It took me ages to make every decision about this lap sized baby quilt for some of our best friends but in the end I’m so happy with how it turned out! It’s my fifth quilt since I started this hobby [obsession] a year ago and it’s so fun to see improvements and learn new skills. This is my first time doing free motion on a long arm. I took a two day course and then rented time on the long arm from a local shop. (If you live in the Portland OR area I cannot recommend Modern Domestic enough!!) They are ok, but I’m really tired of looking at these fabrics. I kinda hate them at the moment. The colors annoy me after so much time working with them. Plus the corners on the triangle one don’t line up due to the way the pattern had me sew them. (Free patterns can be hit or miss, I guess) I’m much happier with the staircase one. Just finished piecing the top of a twin(ish) size quilt for one of my twin baby nieces, literally felt the most like after I had given birth, exhaustion, physical pain, exhilaration, pure love that is blind to all flaws. A huge sense of accomplishment of something that just recently felt nearly impossible. My bobbin was giving me fits tonight and I almost quit, but I got her done! Lots of rethreading, repositioning, my DH brought me an extension cord so I could try to optimize the path from the floor where my squares were laid out to my ironing board ti my sewing machine without constantly tripping over cords. Next steps is adding borders. The pattern calls for a narrow border of the background fabric and then to make a piano key border from charm packs of the matching accent fabrics. I tried to show the idea of the borders in the last pic. Also my darning foot attachment came in the mail yesterday so I will be soon attempting to learn free motion quilting. Fingers crossed. I stood in my kitchen staring out the window, my mind a million miles away. I couldn't take the tightness in my chest and the weight of what my husband had suggested to me. My husband David and I have been trying to have a baby for years, but our last visit to the hospital provided the final nails in the coffin after telling us that it wasn't ever going to happen. I was devastated, but my husband didn't seem too upset, because he suggested we had options. I couldn't believe what he was asking of me, not only me but also my sister. When he first mentioned that we ask my sister to be a surrogate, It didn't come across as the worst idea. But when he suggested we do it the traditional way it sent my blood running cold. A million thoughts ran through my head as I tried to make sense of what he said and wanted. Was he attracted to my sister all this time? Was he using this as a way to sleep with my sister quilt-free? I was furious and when I said this to him, he didn't see the problem. Told me his ancestors have done it for centuries. I didn’t answer him at first. I didn’t trust myself to speak without breaking. It was as if David, the man I’d known and loved, was suddenly a stranger. It wasn’t just the idea of surrogacy that upset me. It was the way he spoke about it like it was part of some long-forgotten tradition. He wasn’t talking about clinics or doctors. He wanted Emily to conceive with him naturally. I couldn’t wrap my head around it. My sister, with my husband, to give us the child I couldn’t have? The thought made me sick. David had been calm, almost too calm when he explained it. He said it was “the family’s way,” something his ancestors had always done to keep the bloodline strong. The more he talked, the more I felt like I didn’t even know him anymore. It wasn’t just old-fashioned, it was disturbing. I tried to talk to Emily, hoping she’d be as horrified as I was. At first, she thought it was a joke. Phew, even baby quilts are hard work, mentally and physically! I wanted to show off my nearly completed baby quilt I’m making for my friend 😍 I used the 70s sun quilt pattern from The Retro Quilter in a custom colour way my friend chose. Piecing the top together was nice and easy, I agree with the rating of the pattern that is is suitable for confident beginners. I used 100% cotton craft fabric for the top, bamboo wadding, and a 20% cashmere/75% modal/5% elastane fleece for the backing to be super soft for baby skin. This should be machine washable on 30 degrees C even with the cashmere content! The free motion quilting was quite a trial! In my only other quilt I drew on the quilt lines before using my free motion quilting foot but this was a true free motion with no lines to follow! I’m really pleased with it despite my top thread shredding quite a few times. Still trying to troubleshoot that. Using a new stretch needle helped reduce frequency of shredding but didn’t eliminate it. Time to tackle the binding tomorrow! I made this quilt for my baby who's still on the way. Pattern is Charming Sawtooth by Hailey Young (free pattern!) which requires only one charm pack (apart from background and backing). I used the 'dream' charm pack by Kristy Lea. Second picture is the backing. In hindsight, I regret my fabric choice a bit. I feel like the designs were so cute but by cutting them up, they get lost in the whole thing. Good thing my baby will be very close to it.
