Thanks for your replies. I am an old school technology guy. Neither of my phones are eSim capable and I don't use my phone for any direct payments. When I travel I use my old phone for data and calls. I tuck my current phone in a secure spot deep in my backpack and use it for occasional photos. I will look for those pancakes and I am adding the Japan Transit app too.

What’s the best travel backpack you’ve actually used and loved?
Hey, folks I’m looking for a travel backpack and I’m realizing there are way too many options out there. Some look great in photos but then people say they’re uncomfortable, too heavy, or annoying to pack once you actually use them on a trip. I want something that’s practical, comfortable to carry, and easy to organize without being huge or overcomplicated. Good space matters, but so does how it feels when you’re wearing it for a while. A separate laptop section would be nice too, but overall I just want something that works really well for real travel. If you’ve found one that was genuinely worth it, what made it stand out? I’d also love to hear if there are any popular ones that seem great at first but ended up being disappointing. submitted by /u/Over-Entrance-8960 to r/backpacks [link] [comments]

Backpacking Europe in 1997 meant traveling with paper maps, a Eurorail pass, and a copy of Let’s Go Europe.
In 1997, right after graduating from college, I bought a Eurorail pass and spent ten weeks backpacking across Europe with no real plan. This was before smartphones and constant connectivity. If I needed directions, I had to ask someone. If I needed a place to sleep, I walked from hostel to hostel until I found one with an open bed. The best part of the whole experience wasn’t just the places I visited. It was the people I met along the way. Travelers from all over the world sharing stories, trading tips, and sometimes deciding to head to the next city together. This photo was taken in Gimmelwald, Switzerland, at Mountain Hostel, sitting around a table with a group of travelers I had met at different points along the trip and somehow ran into again in that tiny mountain village. (I'm the one in the back left). That was one of the special things about backpacking back then. Everyone seemed to be part of the same loose community, helping each other figure things out as we went. That adventure stayed with me for decades and eventually pushed me to sit down and write the story of it. submitted by /u/AudioSoul to r/backpacking [link] [comments]

Backpackers/travellers — thoughts?
Hi everyone — I’m a final year Product Design student working on my grad project, which focuses on improving organisation in travel backpacks. One thing I’ve noticed when travelling is how much time gets wasted unpacking and repacking every time you move accommodation. Even with packing cubes, I still end up digging through everything and the bag gets messy after a few days. So I’ve been prototyping a system that sits inside your backpack, and the system can be hung on a wardrobe rail, turning your bag into a mini hanging shelving unit. The idea is that you never need to unpack — you just hang it up when you arrive. I’ve attached some photos of the super rough prototype being used. I’d genuinely love some honest feedback from people who travel: • Would you personally use something like this? • Do you find unpacking/repacking annoying or is it not a big deal? • Does this seem an actually useful and worthwhile product idea? • What concerns would you have about it? Brutal honesty is welcome — I’m trying to figure out if this is genuinely useful or just a nice idea. Any feedback (positive or critical) would be really helpful for the project. Thanks! submitted by /u/Ch4rlott3- to r/femaletravels [link] [comments]

3 years of full-time travel with a 16L personal item backpack
I have been traveling continuously for the last ~3 years across multiple continents and climates - tropics, shoulder seasons, and cold weather. I occasionally return to a home base, where I may swap or refine a few items - or even change the backpack itself - but the core idea and constraints have remained the same. My setup is intentionally strict - one 16L backpack that qualifies as a personal item and fits under the seat. Everything I travel with fits inside it, with only minimal extra room for snacks or small purchases. Ideally, I would like this to be closer to 20L, but 16L is what I currently make work. The same backpack also functions as my daypack. I also carry a small packable sling for airports and cities. That holds my passport, cards, cash, phone, MagSafe battery, and sunglasses. On flights, I use a neck pillow stuffed with my puffy jacket to keep bulk out of the bag. What’s in the backpack - Toiletry kit - Electronics pouch - Clothing cube - Lightweight sandals - Compact umbrella What I wear in transit Everything is chosen to layer efficiently across changing climates and work for long walking days - Black minimalist sneakers - good for walking all day, light hikes, and nice restaurants - Long pants - Outlier Slim Dungarees - Long-sleeve base layer - UV protection and layering - Patagonia Capilene - Mid-layer hoodie - Patagonia R2 Clothing cube contents - Shorts - Outlier - 5 pairs of underwear - Uniqlo Airism - 2 pairs of merino running socks - 1 long-sleeve shirt - Patagonia - 2 T-shirts - Nike and Uniqlo - Short swim shorts - small enough to wear under a wetsuit when scuba diving - Merino hat, buff, gloves - Icebreaker - Lightweight rain jacket Electronics Everything is USB-C - iPhone - works perfectly for me, battery life has been fine - I carry a MagSafe battery but almost never use it - I do miss a telephoto lens occasionally - AirPods Pro - excellent noise isolation for planes and taxis - Apple Watch - especially useful with Apple Maps for walking directions - MacBook Air M2 13 inch - Anker 50W dual USB-C charger and Anker 30W charger as backup - 3 in 1 Qi2 charging stand - USB-C car charger for rentals - Small assortment of USB-C adapters, voltage meter, flash drive, etc ### Thoughts after years of use There is no perfect backpack. This system has proven reliable over time, but I am still refining details and looking for a bag closer to an ideal 20L that remains lightweight, weather-resistant, works well as a daypack, offers minimal but useful organization, and includes stretch water bottle pockets. UPDATE: - added Switch 2 in a pouch. Yes, it fits. submitted by /u/k1kti to r/onebag [link] [comments]

Best travel backpack that fits as a personal item?
I’ve been in search of the perfect travel backpack, I can bring on flights as a personal item that’s not too bulky or ugly… but can fit a ton of stuff. When I fly frontier I only fly with a personal item and need to be able to fit enough things inside. I’ve been using one of the viral Amazon backpacks with the straps to tighten it, but I hate it. It’s ugly, cheap and doesn’t fit right. I need an upgrade and I’m willing to invest some money if necessary, but if I can find a good recommendation that’s affordable cute and can actually fit a lot, that would be ideal!! submitted by /u/AssignmentAmazing260 to r/femaletravels [link] [comments]

Best travel backpack that will fit under the seat (details in body)
I desperately need a new travel backpack. The one I’ve been using is old, beat up, and has an ugly print. I asked for a new one for Christmas but need to actually tell them what I want. Here are the specs of what I’m looking for: Large capacity- I tend to carry a lot. I usually have 1 or 2 computers with chargers and mouse, fairly large make up bag, a couple of books/magazines, work notebook, travel jewelry case, pouch with travel meds and accessories, water bottle, pens/highlighters, travel snacks, and sometimes I need to cram my purse in of the airline is being strict. My current bag does fit this for the most part Back strap so it can slide over the handles of roller back (pretty standard now) No wheels on the backpack Simple clean look Ideally under $100 I would love some recommendations or help finding something that matches my criteria I scrolled and haven’t seen any reviews or similar post in a while. Sorry if this is a repeat. submitted by /u/Miss_airwrecka1 to r/handbags [link] [comments]

What’s the best backpacks for travel if you want one bag for everything?
I’m trying to move to a “one bag” setup for trips and I’m stuck on what to buy. I want something I can use as a carry on for flights, weekend trips, and maybe the occasional longer vacation without checking luggage. Things I care about Opens like a suitcase instead of a top-only hiking pack Comfortable enough to walk around a city or airport for a few hours Fits under the seat or in overhead bins without fighting gate agents Separate space or at least good organization for laptop, clothes and toiletries I’m not super picky about brand, I just don’t want something that falls apart in a year or kills my shoulders. If you’ve been traveling with the same backpack for a while and still love it, what are you using and why does it work so well for you? Edit: After reading through the replies and digging a bit deeper, I came across a helpful guide on travel backpack recommendations that breaks down different styles and what actually works for one bag travel. It helped me narrow things down, so sharing it here in case it helps anyone else too. submitted by /u/Temporary-Pause-4737 to r/backpacks [link] [comments]

Indefinite Backpack Travel - Year 11 Update!
Not sure how many onebaggers reach their second decade! For better or for worse, nothing has really changed since my post last year, since I have achieved “onebag perfection.” Still, I'll keep up the tradition of posting here annually I still live out of the 9 liter Aer bag I've had since 2021 (Aer actually updated their website to say it's 8.5L), and still only own what fits in the bag (plus a few outfit duplicates at my NYC homebase so I don’t need to do laundry as often). More than half of the items I carry have been with me for so long that they're no longer sold/impossible to restock Probably more interesting: I just updated the “onebag progression” Google Sheet I shared here a few years back, which tracks everything I’ve owned since 2015. Have any other onebaggers shared lists like this? I was hoping this format would become a thing! It's such a cool way to track the process! 2025 changes: My Sandisk SSD got corrupted. I’ve since learned that every travel SSD has this issue. I repeat, every travel SSD has corruption issues! Plan for it! Anyways, I decided if I’m gonna have to deal with the risk of corruption I may as well switch to tiny Samsung USB-C thumb drives that disappear in my pockets. Haven't had any issues with them so far! I got rid of my iPad, since it stopped being a device for art and creativity and became a device for movies and games. I will eventually add it back when the time is right As of this past winter I’ve been trying out a canvas jacket, which could never in a million years fit inside my bag but can be worn while on the move. Stacked on top of my down jacket + hoodie + shirt it gives me maximum cold protection and also has pockets to enable zero-bag travel I added a baseball cap. Purely an aesthetic choice I didn’t even make a new knoll photo, since you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Just pretend the iPad and SSD were replaced by a jacket and hat. And that's literally all the changes since last year! Consumerism hates me Full post on my website as always, but fair warning it's 95% the same as last year :) I’m also currently editing a video going over my onebag that I’ll share to Instagram (@jeremymaluf) later this week Safe travels! ✌️ submitted by /u/jeremymaluf to r/onebag [link] [comments]

Completed Traveling Snailsman backpack!
My Traveling Snailsman backpack is finished and I’m excited to wear it to the Great Lakes Medieval Faire this weekend! It’s made of Eva foam and foam clay covering a wooden frame. The straps are assembled from three belts cut apart. The right side of the roof opens so I can store treasure and access the lights. I used fabric as hinges and magnets to keep things closed. The door is made from an acrylic panel painted with stained glass paint. submitted by /u/MediocreTrainer865 to r/renfaire [link] [comments]

The Best Backpacks for Travel Available Now?
I’ve been trying to upgrade my travel gear with a new backpack, but honestly, it’s been tough to find one that actually works for me. Between issues with comfort, durability, storage space, or just not having the right organization features feeling a bit stuck. So many options carry-on vs. large, lightweight vs. heavy-duty, anti-theft, or great laptop compartments. Any solid travel backpack recommendations? What is the ultimate carry-on backpack?
Hi, I currently have a Fjällräven Räven 28L (older generation), and I'm starting to look for a better backpack—ideally something that ticks several boxes, such as: Water-resistant Aesthetically pleasing Stands up on its own (unfortunately, the Räven doesn’t) Carry-on approved Large enough for a weekend trip but still convenient for daily use Fits a 16” laptop I've been considering the ZeekSack 30L, Fjällräven Travel Pack 35L, and now also the Fjällräven Färden 40L. I'm curious about these models and wondering if anyone has experience with their specific quirks. For example, the ZeekSack opens from the side, which seems like it would make organizing and accessing items easier than a traditional top-loader. On the other hand, the Travel Pack’s clamshell design (is that the right term?) seems super practical when you have the bag laid out on a bed at home or in a hotel room. However, I imagine it might not be as convenient when standing in a cramped airplane or train aisle, digging for that one AirPod that fell out of its case… It’s worth mentioning that I'll be flying from Sweden to the US this summer, bringing this bag along with a large rolling suitcase. First, we’re flying to California to stay with a friend, but later we’ll fly to their summer house in Hawaii. For that leg of the trip, I want to travel with just this backpack. We will be flying SAS between Scandinavia and the US, and Hawaiian Airlines to Hawaii. Of course, the bag should also serve as a solid everyday pack when I’m back home—for work/school with a laptop, weekend trips, carrying camera gear when I go out to shoot, or just daily essentials with room for workout clothes and shoes. Ideally, it should be able to stand on its own without needing to be leaned against something. Also, I prefer a more muted color—us Swedes love black and will wear it until something darker comes along! ;) Any thoughts, experiences, or alternative recommendations? submitted by /u/astfors to r/onebag [link] [comments]

What’s your backpack holy grail when you travel?
Hi everyone! I am searching for a backpack to travel! I currently this bag from amazon “VECAVE Carry On Backpack for Women, Large Travel Backpack Flight Approved, Waterproof 17 Inch Laptop Backpack Business Work Backpacks Men Mochila De Viaje, Black” for two years, and it’s done its job. However, I recently went to Europe for 10 days with this backpack (40L) and it caused me shoulder pain and made going around europe pretty miserable. i packed with cubes (2 cubes) and had used the shoe compartment but even when i didn’t have the shoes in made the bag extremely bulky. I’ve been doing research on backpacks that align with my needs and budget. here are some of my contenders I have in mind. • Cotopaxi Allpa 28 or 35 -I tried it on at REI and like it but they don’t have the newer version, I like the slot in the front of the bag to put smaller stuff in, but i don’t know how i feel about the clam shell opening if i’m trying to other stuff while on the plane and needing to open the ENTIRE BAG to unzip for one thing. i like the hip thing too • Osprey 26+6 - i like the zipper set up and like it has an extra 6 liters of space, but it’s sold out so i’ll wait to see • Patagonia MLC 30L - i like how you can go duffle and go backpack, and the look of the bag, and organizing it • Osprey Nebula -comfy at first impression at REI, i tried the nebula. I like the shoulder help and how much the bag zips open, easy to access my goals to have a bag with: laptop compartment that’s not inside of a main compartment, easy to access and organize items, more support in shoulder or have a hip thing (whatever will make my shoulders not hurt if i’m walking a lot with bag, long term goal is this to be a BIFL!). Fitting shoes in my backpack without my bag becoming bulky and unable to be underneath plane. I’m looking for 30-40 liters, i’m not looking for more space, I want this bag to fit under a plane seat 💺, i live in the US and frequently travel around the US. If you have bags mentioned above, i would love to hear your opinions on it. If you have a different bag that does the job, i’d love to hear about it. I'm a backpacking ethnomusicologist traveling Indonesia researching and recording rare and endangered traditional music, then sharing it all for free online.
My name's Palmer Keen. I'm a guy who's obsessed with music in a corner of the world that most people never even think about, Indonesia. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and also perhaps the most musically diverse country on the planet, but so much of this music is unknown or unavailable outside the country. My mission is to share this stuff with the world. For more than four years I've been traveling around Indonesia researching and recording dozens of Indonesian music styles and sharing it all for free on my website, Aural Archipelago. Without a formal background in ethnomusicology, I've figured it all out as I go: becoming fluent in Indonesian, learning how to do fieldwork, and making connections with musicians and communities across the thousands of islands in the archipelago. I travel with all my gear in a backpack, staying with musicians in their homes, going to remote villages that have never seen foreigners, and finding music that's never been heard outside of these islands. There have been lots of adventures along the way and so, so much great music. A few notes to answer FAQ: How do I make money?/Is this my job?: This isn't my job. For most of the time I've been doing this I was supporting myself and the project by teaching English full time. My description may have been a bit misleading, I travel often but it is not a constant thing. This is a passion project, but I don't make a living from this. I receive donations on my site occasionally, but these are forwarded to musicians. I now also do occasional work as a fixer and guide for others looking for music in Indonesia. How did you get into this field?: To be clear, I have no academic background in ethnomusicology. I studied the traditional music called gamelan as an extracurricular in university, then decided to move to Indonesia to teach English and learn more about the gamelan that I'd fallen in love with. Since then everything I know about ethnomusicology I've figured out along the way. It's a fascinating field for anyone interested in music, but for those who want to make it their career (again, this is not my career, just a passion project!), it has the same pitfalls of any other job in academia. Do you pay the musicians?/Aren't you exploiting them?: Yes, I always pay musicians a reasonable fee for performances that I commission. I'm not releasing whole albums of their music for free, just a track or two to get people interested, something the musicians are very much on board with. The idea is that rather than put this music on albums that won't be affordable for everyone (especially Indonesians themselves), the music is available online for everyone, especially Indonesians and people from these communities who couldn't afford a proper album. Ask me anything :) If you're interested, check out: The site: Aural Archipelago Aural Archipelago on Facebook Instagram: @auralarchipelago YouTube: Aural Archipelago on YouTube Proof: https://imgur.com/a/j75Ldii EDIT: Okay guys, it's been fun, but it's late here in Indonesia and I've got to go to sleep. If I have time I'll try to get to the rest of the questions tomorrow. I hope those who are interested will go to the site and maybe fall in love with some of this music just as I have. If there's a particular group or artist that you like, you can leave a comment and I will relay it to the musicians, almost all of whom I'm still in touch with.
