Thinking of buying Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water as a toner before my actives. Skin: combo–oily, hot & humid climate. Actives Routine: niacinamide, alpha arbutin, salicylic & lactic acids (not together) i'm not consistent with all but I've started using since 6+ months. Beginner Retinol planned in a month or so. I mainly need calming, but some brightening/texture help would be nice. For those who’ve used it: Is it actually calming after actives or irritation? Did it help your texture / glow? Hey, i heard and saw a lot of review about this mark. A lot of good and bad. So im kind of confused if it's actually worth. I own just the sunscreen, which im satisfied with, because it's light and doesn't roll on my face. I heard that some poeple said it break them out but i can't tell because my acne is active and i was breaking out before this. Im thinking of getting the Ginseng Essence Water because it's in sales lol. But that's not the only point ofc. My skin care is very simple. (Morning: moisturizing cream and spf. Night: moisturizing cream) Because im fighting with acne for years, I'm scared to use a lot or just random products because I don't want to clog my pores or get more break outs that i already have. I will get acne treatment, which will work from inside of my body. I don't trust spot on products for acne, nothing worked so i don't look for anything. Im just looking for something that will work good to keep my skin moisturized and just nice. So not sure if i even need toner. I just purchased a few couple skin care products from BOJ. I need advice from people that are well versed in using these products. I am 20 years old and I have combination, dark spots and acne prone skin so these were recommended. It is really hard to leave my house because of my acne and huge dark spots I just really want this to work any advice will be welcome. Personal Experience: Right off the bat, this feels more like a toner than an essence. It's watery with a slight herby scent which is a given since the main ingredient is ginseng. I’d heard mixed reviews on this and claims that it broke people out and didn’t do much. I didn't gravitate towards this from the start because it seemed to to nothing butttt when I started breaking out this really did calm my skin and prevented angry acne outbursts. I generally reach for this when there's incoming acne. It’s also non comedogenic. As for wrinkles, I wouldn't be the best person to ask. Who is it for? I will use emoji for ease of understanding. I'll tell you right away that English is not my first language, so if you notice any mistakes please correct me in the comments, thank you. About me: F22, I have suffered from acne since my teens and atopic dermatitis since childhood. My skin: Oily, sensitive, acne-prone. My climate: Moderate, subarctic, snowy cold winters, cold and wet summers. I live above the Arctic Circle. My routine: Hydrophilic oil, cleanser, toner, essence (now removed from care, see below), serum, moisturizing gel. Bean mask twice a week. 🌼 – the product was perfect for my skin 🍃 – the product did not have a strong/any impact 🍄 – the product ruined my skin/ caused acne/allergies ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Ginseng Essence Water – 🍄 I bought it based on my mom's positive review (58F) Used it for two and a half weeks, stopped. I still don't understand why this particular product caused me such problems. Almost immediately after I started using it, my chin was covered in pustules. I initially thought it was my skin reacting to a change of care (I had previously used a different product line). Those big pimples disappeared and then my chin was covered in whiteheads, especially the bottom part. I was bored and even counted the number of them – fifteen. I thought it was the lightest product in my skincare routine and it definitely shouldn't cause this reaction, but after I removed it, the pimples started to heal faster and new ones stopped appearing. Scent: neutral Texture: watery Definitely won't buy again, causes acne ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Green Plum Refreshing Toner – 🍃 Bought it after seeing positive reviews on this subreddit Used it for a month and continue to use it. I will immediately point out the only major downside for me – this toner makes my skin VERY sticky. I tried changing the amount of toner I applied, but my skin was still very sticky for a very long time. But overall I think this is a good base for my skin, although I will try to use other toners as I didn't notice any super effect. I guess it's all the essence's fault. Scent: smells almost nothing, if you sniff carefully, it smells like plum Texture: watery Might buy in the future if other toners don't work out for me. ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide – 🍃 I bought in search of a serum for problem skin, I read good reviews about the product Used it for week and a half, stopped. My first serum, which I initially complained that it was the culprit for my acne because I read a lot of comments about how niacinamide was bad for a lot of people. I removed it from my care and replaced it with another serum, which didn't help, and that's when I started to realize that the serum wasn't the problem. As for the effect – I didn't give it the highest rating, as the serum didn't cause me pimples, but it didn't cope with the existing ones either. On the plus side, I would note the very pleasant texture and smell. The serum helped to reduce stickiness after using the toner. Scent: light propolis odor Texture: slightly sticky, but does not give an unpleasant feeling at all, feels good I will buy again later to try it out on my skin again. ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol – 🌼 I bought it as a replacement for my previous serum Used it for two weeks and continue to use it. The serum I'm using now and don't see any downsides, although I plan to try others. Gives a very nice feel to the skin, reduces stickiness from toner, very neutral smell, dries up acne. Can't complain about anything, it suited my skin. Scent: smells lightly of something grassy Texture: very pleasant, watery, goes well on the skin Would buy again. ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser – 🍃 Bought it after seeing positive reviews on this subreddit Used it for a month and continue to use it. Would not buy it again I have been thinking for a long time what kind of review I want to leave for this product. Now I have almost used this cleaner completely, and unfortunately I want to mention that I don't feel that this product cleansed my skin well. It's hard for me to explain it, but after washing my face it was like I wanted to wash my face again. Scent: same as with the toner: if you sniff it, it smells a little like plum Texture: very light, watery, the gel is pleasant to apply Would not buy again as I don't feel it cleanses enough. ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Red Bean Refreshing Mask – 🌼 Bought it after seeing positive reviews on this subreddit Used it for a month and continue to use it. Another favorite in the BoJ line. I love the texture and smell of this mask, I use it twice a week and every time my skin feels very velvety afterwards. The only downside is that it's very hard to wash off, but I don't think it's a big problem. It noticeably reduced the oiliness of my skin, especially around my forehead. Scent: strong bean scent Texture: clay-like with inclusions, but easy to apply to the face Would definitely buy again. ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Red Bean Water Gel – 🌼 Bought it after seeing positive reviews on this subreddit Used it for a month and continue to use it. Apparently my skin is bean friendly, as I can't complain about this moisturizing gel either. It has a wonderful texture, it lays down perfectly on the skin and moisturizes it well. The gel doesn't cause oily shine and does a definitive job of dealing with sticky toner. Scent: neutral, no bean smell Texture: very watery Will buy again, moisturizes well. ​ BEAUTY OF JOSEON – Radiance Cleaning Balm – 🌼 Bought in search of a hydrophilic oil products based on good reviews Used it for a week and continue to use it. I don't wear makeup, but I still use the hydrophilic product as it cleanses my skin well. I bought it quite recently, as I was not satisfied with the cleansing from the gel, as I pointed out earlier. This product saved the situation - now I feel like my skin is clean. Scent: light pleasant herbal scent Texture: melting, almost reaches the density of water afterwards Will buy again. ​ CONCLUSIONS I will no longer attempt to try BoJ products containing ginseng. I don't know what exactly it is in them that causes breakouts. The essence contains niacinamide, but the serum with propolis and niacinamide did not cause this reaction. Overall, I like the BoJ product line. It is financially affordable and the design is very concise and beautiful. I will definitely be trying other products that I haven't tried yet, not counting the ginseng products. Radiance Cleansing Balm: 5/5 The best cleansing balm I have ever tried. I have found it to be quite soothing to the skin. It removes my makeup with ease and doesn’t leave a residue. Sooo good! Ginseng Cleansing Oil: 4.5/5 This one is so nice. It removes makeup very well. My only caveat with this one is the smell. It has a natural smell from the ingredients which is quite medicinal. Not a negative to most people but I found that it lasts a bit after washing off. Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser: 4/5 Nice cleansing gel. Very gentle. This is a good choice if you are someone who double cleanses. It foams up a bit but it isn’t overly stripping. Ginseng Essence Water: 3.5/5 I know that someone is going to bite my head off for this but this toner is a bit overrated imo. Nothing bad about it but there are hydrating toners which do the job better. It is nice but underwhelming. Green Plum Refreshing Toner: AHA + BHA: 4/5 This is an excellent choice for someone who wants a chemical exfoliant but has sensitive skin. Very hydrating, but gentle enough that you could almost use it every day. Very nice product Glow serum: Propolis + Niacinamide: 4/5 Nice serum. I suspect it would work well for acne prone skin with the propolis and niacinamide. Just be cautious of the propolis if you have allergies to flowers or pollen because that allergy might be set off by the propolis. Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol: 4.5/5 Nice soothing serum. It’s hydrating and absorbs immediately. Revive Serum: Ginseng + Snail Mucin: 4/5 Nice but imo there are better snail mucin products out there. Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal: 5/5 This product is a game changer for people looking for affordable retinal products. I would use this all over the face like your usual retinoid (not just on the eye area). The texture is so nice and light, unlike most retinaldehydes I’ve tried. It layers beautifully. While the percentage of retinal is on the lower side (0.02%), it is at an effective percentage to see results. It’s also encapsulated to minimize irritation. This is an excellent introductory retinal product! I have enjoyed this product so much! Dynasty Cream: 5/5 So nice if you have normal or combo skin! Perfect occulusive texture without being too rich. Very soothing ingredients! Really wonderful product. This one has been my nightly moisturizer during the summer months and my skin loves it! Red bean water gel: 5/5 This product is the light hydrating moisturizer my oily skin has been searching for my whole life! Literally phenomenal! Highly recommend for oily skin or people looking for a lightweight summer/morning moisturizer. There is also some data to indicate that the red bean in this product could reduce sebum production and boost the efficacy of your sunscreen (though there needs to be more studies to validate this). Ginseng Moist Sun Serum (SPF 50+ PA++++): 3.5/5 Melts into the skin quickly. High SPF and very lightweight but it looks greasy on the skin (be mindful of that if you have oily skin). My main gripe with this is that it contains fragrance, which wasn’t necessary and could be sensitizing. Matte Sun Stick (SPF 50+ PA++++): 4.5/5 I love this one! It’s very compact and I love that I can just shove it in my purse and reapply it throughout the day. The ingredients are very soothing and even though I am someone who at times can be prone to irritation with chemical filters, this one caused no issues even around my sensitive eye area. It is also the most mattefying sunscreen I have ever found. It literally works like a blotting powder, which is something I adore as a person with oily skin. The only negative is that you do not get a lot of product for the price, which makes it more expensive than the other two SPF’s from this brand. Still, this is an absolute favorite of mine. Relief sun: Rice + Probiotics (SPF 50+ PA++++): 5/5 I mean this product took the internet by storm for a reason, it is incredible! This has been my daily sunscreen for like a year now and I have gone through several tubes (I must be on my fifth or sixth tube by now).
