Re: Automatic Light/Dark Mode Bug with Sleep Mode
I agree this issue be fixed. Now that I was 12a-8a it is more noticeable. I put my phone in Sleep Mode (without it setting Dark Theme) around 3pm. The display says bright in my room that is black from blackout curtains. Then when I get up (11pm) it is dark and charges by the time I get off. But that first going to bed, if I use my phone it is in light theme.

RE:Crowds in France rush to buy air-conditioning units as temperature soar past 40°C
My bedroom's window facing gets both the morning and afternoon sunlight coming in from different angles. Luckily, I have custom made 99% blackout curtains to mitigate the heat, so I am still tanking the daytime without aircon. Only start using the aircon from 7pm onwards when the air gets still and stuffy.

What actually ended up being the best blackout curtains for my bedroom surprised me completely
I work weird hours and sleep during the day sometimes, so I finally decided to stop cheaping out on blackout curtains after months of waking up every time sunlight hit the room. I genuinely thought blackout curtains were one of those simple purchases where you just buy something dark-colored and you’re done. Nope. Apparently half the stuff labeled “blackout” just means “slightly less annoying sunlight.” First set I bought looked amazing online. Nice linen texture, soft beige color, modern look, all the reviews talking about “pitch black sleep.” Hung them up and my room still looked like early morning inside a dentist office. The fabric itself darkened the light, sure, but the amount leaking from the top and sides completely ruined the point. Didn’t realize how much the hanging style mattered until then. Those metal grommet ones leave gaps everywhere unless your rod sits super tight to the wall. Then I tried another pair that actually blocked more light, but they smelled like a plastic shower curtain for almost two weeks. I’m pretty sensitive to smells and it drove me insane trying to sleep with that chemical odor trapped in the room. Ended up washing them twice and airing them out on my balcony before they became tolerable. Still not great. The funny part is I originally only cared about darkness, but after trying a few different sets I realized the bigger difference was actually temperature and noise. One heavier pair made my room noticeably quieter at night. I live near a busy road and it didn’t magically soundproof the room or anything, but the constant tire noise became more muffled. Also helped with heat way more than I expected. My bedroom gets cooked by afternoon sun and the thicker curtains actually made the AC run less. Biggest lesson I learned: “room darkening” and “100% blackout” are absolutely not the same thing, no matter how sellers word it. Most of the softer decorative ones are really just dimming curtains unless they have a proper liner attached. The only ones that got close to actual darkness were the heavier layered curtains with a physical blackout backing. Another thing nobody explained properly is sizing. I used to buy curtains basically the same width as the window because I didn’t want them looking bulky. Huge mistake. You need way more fabric than you think or the center split and side gaps let light pour through. I eventually bought panels almost triple the width of my window and mounted the rod higher and wider than the frame. Massive difference. Also switched to a wraparound rod so the curtain actually touches the wall at the edges. Now I kind of understand why people obsess over curtains in home decor subs because bad ones are annoying literally every single day. And honestly, some of the expensive designer-looking ones still perform worse than cheaper ugly thermal curtains. Marketing photos make everything look like a luxury hotel suite until you’re getting flashbanged awake at 7 AM by a beam of sunlight coming through the top gap. At this point I think finding blackout curtains is less about the curtain itself and more about the entire setup working together. Fabric thickness, liner type, rod style, window size, wall color behind the curtain, all of it matters way more than I expected. submitted by /u/Dramatic_Bat1578 to r/BedroomBuild [link] [comments]

BLACK OUT CURTAINS MY A$$!
More than half of these so-called blackout curtains don't block out anything, and the sun can peek perfectly through. I guess you have to spend over $150 or something to get something that genuinely blocks out all light, but every single brand of blackout curtains that I get that claims no light gets through, turns out to be penetrable by light. So now, if I ever hope to get decent sleep during the day, I have to double or even triple layer just to get it pitch black. How is that not false advertising... submitted by /u/Crixus_935 to r/Nightshift [link] [comments]

What's the best blackout curtains for bedroom? Any suggestions?
So I’m honestly struggling with sleep lately because my room gets hit with sunlight way too early… like 6am and I’m already awake even if I slept late. I’ve tried regular curtains but they’re basically useless, light still leaks through everywhere. It’s starting to mess with my sleep schedule and mood tbh. I’ve been looking into blackout curtains but I’m confused af. Every brand claims “100% blackout” but reviews are all over the place… some people say it’s life changing, others say it barely blocks anything. From what I’ve seen, stuff like thick polyester or proper blackout lining is supposed to work better, but I don’t wanna waste money on something that looks good online and sucks in real life. If you’ve actually used blackout curtains long term, did they really make your room dark enough? Any specific brands or types that actually worked for you? Need real opinions, not marketing hype. submitted by /u/Lopsided_Tough9254 to r/BedroomBuild [link] [comments]

Best blackout curtains? need some advice
So I've been dealing with the worst sleep schedule lately and I finally figured out the problem - my bedroom gets absolutely FLOODED with light starting at like 5:30am. I'm talking full-on sun assault through my windows. My current curtains are basically decorative tissue paper at this point. I work nights (bartender life) and don't get home until 3am most nights, so I really need to sleep until at least noon to feel human. But between the morning sun, the streetlight that's apparently powered by a small nuclear reactor, and my neighbor's new motion-activated security light that triggers every time a leaf moves, I'm basically living in a disco ball. I've been researching about the best blackout curtains online but honestly every single one claims to block "99.9% of light" and has reviews that are either "LIFE CHANGING DARKNESS" or "complete garbage, returned immediately." The price range is insane too - I'm seeing everything from $15 curtains at Walmart to $300 designer ones. Do the expensive ones actually work better or is it just marketing? My windows are pretty standard size but I've got two in the bedroom. I'm renting so I can't do anything too permanent with the mounting situation. Also my cat likes to climb curtains sometimes (he's an agent of chaos) so they need to be somewhat durable. What brands have actually worked for you? I'm specifically looking for TRUE blackout - like I want cave darkness, sensory deprivation tank vibes. I don't care if they're ugly, I just need SLEEP. Budget is flexible if they actually work but I'd rather not drop $500 on window treatments if I can avoid it. submitted by /u/UndeadNordic to r/homeownerstips [link] [comments]

Are blackout curtains worth it?
We own a tri-level house, and the bedrooms are on the top floor. Naturally, hot air rises, and the summer months leave the upstairs hot. My toddler son's room is on the south-southwest side of the house, and takes the brunt of the sunlight, especially now that our neighbor chopped his big tree down. It was 82 in his room the last couple days. It does cool down decently fast at night. We do leave the door closed, normally, to keep the cat out. Right now he has basic plastic blinds (the kind that are couple-inch wide) slats. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to if blackout curtains may help keep his room cooler? I hesitate to get a window AC, because while I want him to be cool, I also don't want to freeze him out. His room is not that large. submitted by /u/Dawulf to r/homeowners [link] [comments]

Just installed this blackout curtain, but light's leaking from the top. Any practical solutions, reddit?
I'm renting the place and not looking for a permanent solution, like installing a Cornice Board. Is there any hack for this? Don't mind if doesn't look pretty. https://preview.redd.it/rgqrjcjlnohb1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8f5d3d714899da5f7ddeb8087fed06affc2d055 submitted by /u/brenodit to r/lifehacks [link] [comments]

AITA for installing blackout curtains in our bedroom even though my wife didn't want me to?
I (33m) am a recent newlywed to my wife (30f.) We have been together for about 4 years but have only been married for 7 months. We've bought and moved into a house that is about 25 years old. I am currently stuck on the night shift. I HATE it. I HATE being up all night and then sleeping during the day. I can't wait to be off of it; but at my job it's all based on seniority. With some luck I may be able to go to day shift next year, but more than likely I'm looking at 2023 until I'm able to move; possibly 2024 but that's the worst case scenario. My wife loves decorating. She's made our home look great, but it's been in increments due to budgetary constraints. In the master bedroom--our bedroom--we've hung up blinds on the windows but we've been waiting to put up window treatments. I have trouble sleeping during the day because it tends to be too bright. I told my wife that I wanted to hang up some blackout curtains in our bedroom to help me sleep during the day but for some reason she was really against this. She said that this would make the room too "gloomy, and depressing" and that she had a different window treatment in mind. I told her that I was having trouble sleeping during the day and she suggested that we get a cheap twin bed and mattress and put it in the basement where it's dark and quiet for me to sleep on my work days. I balked at this and said that I shouldn't be relegated to the basement just because I work overnights; that I want to sleep in my own bed and in my own bedroom. The other day was my day off but I had worked the night before and I woke up before I was ready. Annoyed I stomped off to our local Home Depot and bought and installed some blackout curtains in our bedroom while my wife was at work. My wife is not happy with me, but I think she needs to just get over it and accept that I need blackout curtains in our bedroom for now, and that she can change it out when I switch shifts eventually.
