I'm not sure many people realize how great a resource Board Game Arena is now for solo gamers.
They've got a ton of solo games, many from the BGG top 200, all with a great snappy interface that I much prefer over TTS. Here's a sampling of what they have with solo options: Ark Nova Terraforming Mars Gaia Project A Feast for Odin Heat Hadrian's Wall It's a Wonderful World Wingspan Galactic Cruise Zombicide Harmonies Agricola Wondrous Creatures Darwin's Journey Viticulture Earth Pax Pamir Clans of Caledonia Maracaibo Caverna Like, it's really good. It's almost to the point where if you see a game you like with a good solo mode and you want to try it out before buying a physical copy, there's a decent chance they'll have it. Only downside is the $5/month subscription fee for most of the games, but still. submitted by /u/Steven_Cheesy318 to r/soloboardgaming [link] [comments]

What's your top 10 board games that you plan to try out this year and why? (2026)
Hereās the list of games Iāve tried or want to try: Dune: Imperium ā I picked up the digital version and started playing last month. Iām still learning, but Iām really enjoying it so far. I love the theme and setting even though Iām not a huge Dune fan (yet). Planning to start reading the books sometime this year. Terraforming Mars ā Also have the digital version. Havenāt tried it yet, but Iām really looking forward to playing it after Iām more comfortable with Dune: Imperium. The Old Kingās Crown ā Sadly, I donāt think Iāll be able to get my hands on this. Really wish there was a digital version. 7 Wonders Duel ā I have the digital version on my phone. I played through the tutorial but didnāt fully grasp the game yet. Planning to revisit it. Splendor Duel Scythe ā Own the digital version, but I havenāt opened it yet. Unmatched Blood Rage Dice Throne Root ā I played the tutorial on the digital version, but like 7 Wonders Duel, it didnāt click immediately. Definitely planning to give it another go. Iām mainly looking for games that work great at 2 players, preferably ones that have a digital version, or are available on Board Game Arena, so I can also play online with others. And I'll be only playing with or against my girlfriend. Sadly my circle are not into board games so I'm not looking for a game that requires 3 or more players, unless if you can play against AI, digitally. Based on this list, what other games do you think my girlfriend and I would enjoy? We both like bluffing/ strategy/deckbuilding board games. submitted by /u/Nasrvl to r/boardgames [link] [comments]

Board games that bring something to the table that can't be replicated in video games.
I've been playing a lot of Board Game Arena lately, and I've enjoyed being able to jump into games without worrying about set-up, accounting, and rules mistakes. Of course, playing on table-top still has a lot of little pleasures (the tactility of pieces, the face-to-face experience, the sense of scale from a massive board), but most games can be adequately converted to a digital format without losing their essence. But this made me wonder: What are some games that simply CAN'T be converted to a digital format without being severely damaged? Of course, dexterity games fit in this category (and I'd love to hear recommendations there), but I think there are other games that fit the bill. e.g.: Sidereal Confluence: Mechanically, all the elements of Sidereal Confluence can be played on Table Top Simulator, but it simply isn't the same game. In an in-person game with 8 or 9 people, players will get up from the table and physically move between other players as they hawk their wares. Treasure Island: I've yet to play this game, but in essence, you're hunting for a treasure on a giant map based on oblique clues you receive from Long John Silver. To search the map, you need to use components like a compass and tiny plastic circles to painstakingly search the island. It seems to me like the fiddliness and physicality of these components are core to the enjoyment of the game. Have you found any other games that really MUST be played on a table to have the full experience? submitted by /u/TheDinn to r/boardgames [link] [comments]

"Oh my lord, why is this card not in Arena" - Cards you wish were available in the game.
For me? https://preview.redd.it/yn82dfm4inoe1.jpg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16a3c649b8c800faec6885a19833c0200e7390d4 That is [[Bladewing, Deathless Tyrant]], I love how much he would support Zombies, which, to me, is one of the more fun tribes in the game. https://scryfall.com/card/dmc/9/bladewing-deathless-tyrant And it would even work for a Dragon deck, simply by providing more fodder. Or Sacrifice, because why not? Reanimator would probably love this guy, with how quickly you can insta-fill the board on a pinch! So this is my Golden Unicorn for Arena. I'd probably only play this deck forever. What is the card you would want to see in Arena? MTG Arena's new "Mastery Pass" is predatory, and everything wrong with the games industry today
After logging in today and checking out the new Mastery Pass mechanic, I am so incredibly sad and disappointed in the fact that even if you don't have the premium Mastery Pass, you are reminded constantly of the locked rewards you would have received if you'd purchased it. Dangling the rewards you could get (if only you spend $) is an extremely shitty and unethical business practice that companies are buckling down to protect because it is effective. People with gambling addictions (or addictive personalities, in general) are susceptible to this kind of marketing because they lack the necessary coping skills to avoid temptations that are placed in front of them. Would you put a bottle of whiskey in front of an alcoholic? Or a heroin kit in front of a heroin addict? Common sense tells you that you wouldn't, because it is a cruel and apathetic way to treat a fellow human being who is struggling. ā I'm sure some of you are thinking that this is outside of MTG's purview, and that they are simply trying to make a profit from a product. Or, that it isn't MTG's problem, and people with addictions should be able to deal with their issues on their own. I would like to remind you that MTG: Arena is rated T(een) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), which means that children as young as 13 are being encouraged to play this game - children who have not yet been exposed to gambling and whom some of are guaranteed to develop addiction issues throughout their lives. This system is not helping. ā I would also like to stress that MTG Arena is a video game. I was alive for the birth of the games industry, and once upon a time, games were considered a fun little pastime for children. They existed to bring joy and wonder to those who played them - a feeling that carries into my late 20's, when re-playing those old games. MTG's Mastery Pass is one huge step in the direction that turns this game into yet another grind-y obligation that the majority of players will not spend any additional money on - but the addicts will. ā People, please do not support this. MTG, please reconsider your recent decisions. There are already so many AAA game companies that I can no longer morally (and therefore monetarily) support. As of right now, MTG Arena stands to be one of them. submitted by /u/designdorkus to r/MagicArena [link] [comments]

China's ethics board reviews 20 popular online games, bans 9, requires changes to 11
EDIT 2: Two of the biggest names on this list have apparently been confirmed, PUBG and League of Legends. As reported by tech publication IT Home (in Chinese), a local news station when reporting on the committee, mentioned PUBG and LoL as examples of games cited, The former is due to firearm violence, the latter because of what can be loosely translated to "collective mob violence." Even though the reasons differ compared to the supposed leak, it's still pretty big news. EDIT: u/zestybaby has brought to my attention that Blizzard purportedly posted an announcement on their official Weibo (China's version of Twitter) account denying that they've received notice for action needed on their games. However, this has since been deleted. Now there could be many reasons for this, for example not wanting to draw attention to rumors, or even miscommunication between social media staff. The latter happened when JD and Huawei released official statements calling news of their execs arrest in America and Canada "fake news." Furthermore, the Chinese community has since been somewhat divided, with some accepting the list as believable, and others saying it's probably fake since anyone can make this in Excel. That's certainly true, and the nature of rumors over censorship in China means it's unlikely there will be a firm answer either way. I'd agree it's the role of the OP to substantiate their allegations, but since this topic is itself currently subject to censorship, that's now impossible regardless of whether they have more info or not. In December, China established an Online Gaming Ethics Review Committee to examine a first batch of 20 games that were assessed to contain "ethics risks," with the publishers of 11 games instructed to make changes and remove "ethically questionable content," and 9 games to be either pulled from the market or prohibited from sale. Recently the list of games and the content of their review was revealed by users on NGA, a Chinese gaming forum. I've translated the list here, with titles everyone would be familiar with highlighted, and some of these are quite interesting. ā Game Cause Recommended Action Arena of Valor (Tencent) Overly revealing female characters, rewards given based on rank, distorted concepts of history and culture. Corrective action League of Legends (Riot) Overly revealing female characters, rewards given based on rank, inharmonious chatroom. Corrective action Blade & Soul (NCSOFT) Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom. Corrective action Chu Liu Xiang (NetEase) Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom, game missions include fraud. Corrective action Overwatch (Blizzard) Game visuals promote incorrect values, inharmonious chatroom. Corrective action Diablo (Blizzard) Inharmonious chat, game missions include fraud. Corrective action World of Warcraft (Blizzard) Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom. Corrective action Westward Journey (NetEase) Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom, distorted concepts of history and culture. Corrective action Code: Eva (Tencent) Rewards given based on rank, distorted concepts of history and culture. Corrective action The Legent of Mir 3 (WeMade) Inharmonious chatroom. Corrective action Swords of Legends Online (Aurogon) Inharmonious chatroom. Corrective action PlayerUnknown's Battleground (Bluehole) Blood and gore. Prohibited/Withdraw Fortnite (Epic) Blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw H1Z1 (Daybreak) Blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw Alliance of Valiant Arms (Red Duck) Blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw Ring of Elysium (Tencent) Blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw Paladins (Hi-Rez) Overly revealing female characters, blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw Free Fire Battlegrounds (Garena) Overly revealing female characters, blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw Knives Out (NetEase) Overly revealing female characters, blood and gore, vulgar content. Prohibited/Withdraw Quantum Matrix (NetEase) Blood and gore, vulgar content, inharmonious chat Prohibited/Withdraw ā Some additional info: It's not entirely clear if the recommended actions have actually been enforced by regulators, last I heard PUBG and Fortnite for example are still playable. All the titles slated for withdrawal are battle royale games, which seems to suggest either regulators really want to crack down on the genre, or their popularity is making them targets. Tencent and NetEase are the two biggest gaming companies in China, with the former the biggest in the world. They partner with and manage the servers of pretty much every foreign online game that enters the Chinese market. NetEase does all of Blizzards titles for example, and Tencent now owns League of Legends entirely. Notes on the reasons: Despite the lack of religious influences, traditional Chinese culture is very puritanical. For example, creation, distribution, and possession of pornography are all illegal (recently the government approved financial awards for whistleblowing on porn), and TV shows in the past have been pulled over female characters showing too much cleavage. Lately Xi Jinping's administration has also been reviving stricter moral control. I'm curious how Overwatch wasn't given this charge too, considering Widowmaker's design. I'm guessing the whole "rewarding by rank" is a problem because it suggests class divisions, rather than purely rewarding based on merit? Communist ideology pops up in places even if the country isn't exactly on that path anymore. Correct conceptions of history have seen renewed attention recently as well. Nominally it's supposed to mean Marxist historical materialism, but in colloquial use, it can refer to misrepresentation of history as well. The official Communist Party version of Chinese history is written into Chinese law as part of the PRC's constitution. Fantastical depictions of historical figures can be problematic, as is time travel, and unflattering depictions of revolutionary leaders is downright illegal. "Inharmonious chat" refers to the perceived lack of effort by publishers to combat toxicity, vulgarity, and politically sensitive speech in chats. In China usually games implement lists of censored phrases that are constantly updated to adhere to this requirement, and they are usually very aggressive and would much rather over do it than let anything slip. I'm not sure what "game visuals promote incorrect values" would refer to, I can't really think of anything unique to Overwatch that goes in that direction. (And that's it, just thought English audiences might like to hear about this too. Untranslated source: https://i.imgur.com/qnSbTxM.jpg ) submitted by /u/ZeroWolfe547 to r/gaming [link] [comments]

Step 1: Play Summoning Stone (5 mana left). Step 2: Play Dragon's Breath (4 damage), targeting a 5 health Sunwalker, ignoring the 4 health Dark Iron Dwarf right next to it (0 mana left). Step 3: Roll the only minion out of 67 5-drops that has spell damage. I will pass this tilt on to my children and grandchildren. It will be our family heirloom. submitted by /u/LtCubs to r/hearthstone [link] [comments]
