Sorted 3000+ Books into 400 Shelves Just to Miss 1 Shelf
Playing the game "Librarian." You start with 3000+ books randomly thrown about, and the goal is to get all of them sorted by number, series, and topic. I put all of them away onto their shelves. Except I messed up the numbering on one shelf. AFAIK, there's no way to quickly tell which bookshelf is the issue. Took me 30 minutes to find the two books that were mixed up. submitted by /u/valer1a_ to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

AITJ for quietly changing the rules of my book swap shelf after one friend kept treating it like her personal free bookstore?
I keep a small book swap shelf in the front entryway of my building. It is not an official thing, just a narrow wooden shelf I put there last year with a little sign that says "take one, leave one." At first it was great. People left decent paperbacks, cookbooks, mystery novels, even a few newer hardcovers, and the shelf sort of became this nice tiny community thing. A few neighbors told me they liked checking it on their way in. The problem started with one friend of mine, Leah, who visits me maybe twice a month. She became obsessed with the shelf. Not in a sweet "oh fun, I found a book" way. More in a speed shopping way. She would come over, crouch down in front of it, and pull out anything even remotely good. The first time she took three books and laughed that she would "bring some back later." She brought back one water damaged diet memoir and an old tourist guide to Boston from 2017. After that, it became a pattern. She would text me asking if anything new had shown up. If she visited and saw a nice hardcover, it was gone. A couple neighbors even started joking that the shelf got "picked over" whenever my stylish little book vulture friend stopped by. I hinted more than once that the whole point was swapping, not raiding. She always acted like I was being uptight and said if people leave books in a common area, they should expect people to take them. So last month I changed the sign. It now says, "Please leave a book before taking one. This shelf is for residents and their guests participating in the swap." I also put a small basket under it labeled "donations to add later," mostly so random drop offs would not vanish instantly. Leah came by this weekend, saw two newer novels on the shelf, and asked if she could grab both. I told her sure, if she was leaving two. She got very annoyed and said I had made the shelf weird and transactional just because I was secretly mad at her. I said no, I made it a swap because it is literally a swap shelf. She said I was embarrasing her over used books and that guests should not have to pass some little honesty test in my lobby. Now she is telling mutual friends I basically made a public rule to call her out by name. I did not name her, but honestly yes, she is definitely why the sign exists. submitted by /u/HolocryptK to r/AmITheJerk [link] [comments]

As we all know, the library has books of people who have died. My theory or question is, would it be possible if there was a massive book shelf filled with books of Subaru with ever instance of his death or does it only count permanent deaths? My daughter needed more space for her books so I made this shelf. I had a gap between the bed and the wall because of radiator pipes and I didn't want to drill into bed (as I might sell the bed at some point), so that seemed like a good solution. A shelf for people with strong nerves (and a large number of books).
I am starting to suspect that I enjoy shocking people. When traditional woodworking and conventional furniture stop being enough, the result is a large shelving unit standing on a single leg. The first reaction was almost always the same. People asked if it was about to fall over. Some stepped back instinctively. That moment of doubt was intentional. I wanted to work with tension, visual weight, and how we instinctively read wooden structures. And yes, to answer the obvious question in advance: my wife will fill every one of these shelves with books. And that’s why I made sure the construction was solid. From a woodworking point of view, this piece is about structure and material rather than design statements. The shelf is made from solid oak. The tambour doors are veneered in knotty oak, which demands careful control of grain direction, veneer layout, and precision in moving parts. The construction follows classical joinery logic. Dovetail joints are used where elements need to be mechanically locked together. Mortise and tenon joints provide stiffness and long term stability. The handles are hand carved. Unfortunately, I don’t know what kind of wood it is, I bought it a long time ago. The shelf is fixed to the wall at seven points using a screw based mounting system. This project was a straightforward engagement with oak, solid wood construction, and tambour door techniques. It was also a way to explore how far form can be pushed while still staying within traditional woodworking logic. I am genuinely proud of the result, especially from the construction side. It is one of those pieces that initially makes people uneasy, but holds together precisely because it respects how wood actually works. Made in my workshop, where I build furniture by hand and teach traditional woodworking techniques. submitted by /u/BensariWorkshop to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Just wanna share yung bagong shelf na nabili ko kanina. Originally, plano ko sana bumili ng enclosed type, kaso medyo mahirap hanapin at pricey din. Almost 10 years ago a stranger at a used book store removed a book from the shelf, put it in my hands, and told me I had to read it. I finally did.
The book is "Alaska" by James Michener. It's a history of Alaska (starting thousands of years ago) through the point-of-view of fictional characters (including a mammoth). The attention to detail is painstaking, almost to the point of tedium. I can see why the guy handed me the book. It's informative, surprising and provides a lot of perspective about the indigenous people of Alaska. Overall, very happy I finally read it. Did anybody else have the same reaction? submitted by /u/savvystrider to r/books [link] [comments]
