Edit 3: To clarify, I used the menu on their website which has no prices listed Look, before I say this, I just want to acknowledge I'm a cheap fuck. So maybe my barometer of dining in this city shouldn't be the standard. But I am just so fucking tired of being nickeled and dimed whenever I want to have a meal out with friends. Wanted to grab lunch with some friends yesterday afternoon after a hike. We just wanted a burger and cold beer. Someone finds a spot nearby, off we go I order what I think is a beer and a burger. Server asks me if I want to upgrade the beer to a 24oz for like $2 more. Sure, why not it's a holiday. Fries good with that? Yes. Food comes. It's fine. That's not what gets me. The bill comes and my portion comes to 40 fucking dollars. Why you ask? The beer I asked for was a "specialty" beer (a sippin pretty is specialty apparently) and only came in a 12oz pour, so instead of letting me know they just gave me a double pour and double charged me $18 for one beer. Whatever, that was just shitty server miscommunication. But then, reading the recipet the fries didn't come with the $15 burger, so when I said "yes I would like fries since you asked" what that actually meant was "yes I'd like to pay an additional $6 for handful of sysco fries that are not included with the base meal". Sauce for them would have been another dollar. Good thing I didn't spring for it Throw on the additional "4% kitchen love" fee calculated post-tax and an average tip for the below-average service and we're just north of $40 I'm just so tired of what I think is going to be a simple transaction turning into an opportunistic grift because I didn't bring a microscope and legal team to read the menu. Why are we all putting up with this? My wife and I have been married for thirty years. We have two adult children who both have degrees and careers. Six months ago our daughter moved home after a breakup. I offered to help her get an apartment but her mom said I was being heartless and let her move back. Then four months ago our son moved back home because his job offered him the opportunity in our city. He had moved away to accept a job in a rural town straight out of college. Both kids are employed and were able to support themselves prior to their mom allowing them to move home. I talked to my wife because our bills started going up. All our utilities have increased with the kids back home. Also our grocery bills. It's nuts how much more money I have to put in. Once again she said I should be happy the kids are home. I tried talking to the kids individually and together. They said they understood my position and then the little fuckers went and cried to.their mom. I said fuck it. I talked to my boss and took a contract that takes me out of town for a month at a time. I have been avoiding these because I'm old and have seniority. I put my share of the budget in our shared account. I went to work and it was glorious. I had a hotel room to myself. $160 a day for living allowance. The work is simple. I called my wife every day to check in and see how everything is going. First month everything went well. Then I got my week off. I went for walks every morning and had breakfast out. Lunch I ate out again. Just a meal replacement smoothie or bar. Then dinner I ate at local restaurants. I got home watched some tv and went to sleep. Second month my wife asked me for money while I was away. I asked why. She said that our budget didn't cover the bills. I asked for proof that the budget we agreed on did not cover the bills or that there was a sudden rise in the bills. She said I damn well knew why the budget wasn't covering the bills. I told her to make them pay their part. She wouldn't and took the extra money from her savings. I took my week off and visited my family in Ireland. Third month we were talking and she said that the kids were giving her money but it wasn't enough. I asked how much they gave her. $100 each. For utilities and groceries. So $200 total and it didn't cover the bills. I was shocked. I said I wasn't going to pay to house and feed three adults with full time jobs that couldn't afford to pay their own way. For the record the three of them together earn almost twice what I do. They can absolutely take care of themselves. My wife is basically begging me for money now. The money she would normally use for hair and other beauty appointments is now going for groceries. She is skipping out on meeting up with her friends because she doesn't have the money. She asked me to talk to the kids about giving more money. I laughed and said I had done that and they tattled to her and she said I was a monster for being mean to her poor babies. He could afford his own home and bills. He just wants me to pay for him. Our daughter is dating a different guy and she can afford her own place. I would have no problem housing her while she was getting over her breakup. I would prefer not to divorce over this. But I will not support three working adults. I officially pulled the trigger about seven months ago and I thought I had my math dialed in perfectly. I accounted for the 4% rule , added a 10% buffer for healthcare , and even factored in a slightly higher travel budget. But what I completely failed to realize is how expensive it is to actually exist for 16 waking hours a day without a job to occupy half of them. When I was working my 9-5 , my weekdays were basically free. I’d drink the office coffee , eat a meal-prepped lunch at my desk , and by the time I got home I was too exhausted to do anything but watch Netflix and go to sleep. Now that every day is Saturday , I find myself "just grabbing a coffee" while I am out for a walk , or meeting a friend for a "quick lunch" because , well , I have the time. Those small $15-$30 outings are adding up way faster than I anticipated. Even my hobbies have become a massive drain. I took up woodworking to stay busy , and between the tools , the lumber prices , and the constant trips to the hardware store , I am blowing through my "discretionary" fund by the second week of the month. Has anyone else dealt with this lifestyle creep specifically tied to boredom or just having too much autonomy? I am starting to realize that work was actually a very effective (and profitable) form of impulse control. I have a best friend, let's call her Julia. Julia and I are friends for at least 12 years. she always had this bad habit to make me pay for her lunch saying that she'd pay back but she never does. even when we were in school, she did this. when we worked together part time, she did this. sometimes she pays back but thats like 10% of the times we hang out. we're now adults. everytime we go out, Julia always suggests we eat at a bar cause the food is better but its an excuse for the sake of buying cocktails. whenever we go to a bar, she ends up drinking until she can no longer think straight and is at the point of passing out. she always promises to pay me back but she doesnt. this happened 3 times and I had to pay for our meals and drinks to avoid troubles. on our 3rd time outing, I told her, I cant afford to cover our drinks this time. I'm clearing my student loan now so my spending has been budgeted. she nods and says she won't spend much and she'll pay me. in the end, she ends up ordering so many drinks and getting so drunk and again, i had to pay. These are intended to be recipe ideas to help you make it through lean times, until your next paycheck, etc.. With news of no SNAP possible in many states for November I thought this content might be of help to some people. Also this is not intended to be used as a shopping list for multiple days because if you have the money to buy food in larger quantities that will be a much better value than shopping like this. Always check your stores discounted bread and pastry area and the marked down produce and meat areas for deals on those items because doing that can really help you make an inexpensive meal. Checking for marked down bread is now (Oct 10, 2025) really important because Walmart just discontinued almost all of the breads priced under $1.48, the $1 bakery French and Italian loaves are now $1.48, they uped the price by 47 cents! That's a big price hike that really feels like greed. You can still get 2 kaiser rolls or 2 bolillo rolls for $1.00 but those will probably go away soon. A loaf of Great Value white or wheat sliced loaf bread is currently $1.48, there are some canned biscuits for $0.97. For me, it's chicken and rice soup. I usually cook some chicken (any pieces you like) in the Instant Pot so that I can quickly have pulled chicken and broth. Then I cook the rice separately and throw in some green onions, or whatever I have on hand to round things out. I was a bridesmaid in my childhood best friend's wedding. I wasn't expecting it to be such a shit show but it was the worst 24 hours of wedding "festivity" I have ever experienced. She was not a bridezilla at all and let us choose our own dresses in the color she chose, which was great. My parents were invited as was my family (husband and kids) but since we lived 8 hours away, I opted to go with my mom and dad and leave my kids and husband at home. So my dad drove me and dropped me off at a hotel the night before the rehearsal and I rode to the venue with another bridesmaid. We were supposed to stay at the venue the night before the wedding since it was about 40 minutes outside of the city and in the middle of nowhere. I got to the rehearsal lunch and it was on the lawn outside of the venue and there was a potluck set up. Ok that's fine, I get that not everyone has a huge budget. We do the rehearsal and eat this weird potluck meal and then the bride says to all six bridesmaids "don't forget to make yourself a plate for dinner and go put it in the fridge inside." I was immediately taken aback but I followed directions without objecting. That night we were supposed to be having her "bachelorette party" so I was expecting to go out or at least order in a meal but instead we had funky potluck leftovers. Ok fine, whatever, it was one meal so I moved on. Then, we all have to help set up tables outside and my friend says "I need you guys to make your bouquets, prepare food for tomorrow, and iron the table cloths, and set up chairs and tables. We spent six hours working our asses off and my back was screaming after Ironing these cloths with her sister. Again, I get that budgets can be tight but there was no warning that we were going to be put to work and I was in a mini dress and heels doing hard labor and moving furniture. Come 8pm, we were all exhausted but we rallied and ate our crusty potluck food while the seven of us shared a solitary bottle of champagne. It was nice to catch up and chat. The morning of the wedding, we all got dressed and did our makeup and then the other bridesmaids started freaking out because they didn't know how to do their hair and the bride said we all needed to try to do something with our hair. As a mom of two daughters, I stepped in and did the hair of 4 of the bridesmaids and had to scramble to do my own before the ceremony. The bride had a hair stylist and makeup artist come in. If she had offered, I gladly would have paid to have mine done but it was not an option at that point. The ceremony was fine but I was just ready to go home. Then we get to the reception. They brought in a BBQ truck to provide the food, which was forgettable, and they had a bar but I was told that we had to pay for our drinks. Again, ok that's fine, I'll buy my own damn pinot gris. Then I see the groomsmen getting progressively more tanked and they are at the bar every five minutes. I asked the bride what was up with that and she said "Oh, _new husband_ paid for his groomsmen to have an open bar." Neat. These dudes were being so nasty and it was throwing the vibes off massively. The bridesmaids and I danced and enjoyed ourselves as best as we could with our self-purchased drinks and then finally it is time for the bride and groom to leave. A huge limo rolls up and the bride is shocked. She says to me "omg, my parents said they had a surprise for us!" She then informed me that since I had moved away, her mom and dad had become multi-millionaires because they had invested in properties all over town so they could afford the limo. I asked tactfully if they had been the ones who paid for the wedding and she said "oh yeah, all of it. They are loaded." You could have fooled me... The bride and groom rode away and then her parents came up to the wedding party and said, it's time to tear down. The groomsmen were blitzed and slinking away and the other bridesmaids and I were so pissed. I finally just said no. I had my parents there at this time so I hopped into their car and hightailed it out of there. It was the worst wedding I have ever been to and it made me so angry to find out that her parents are loaded and they just didn't feel like paying for their youngest child to have a nice wedding. She's somehow still married to her husband but I hate him so much. they came to visit my family once a few years ago and he kept pulling my dog's tail, which confirmed my suspicions that he's just an asshole. Experian Account is so I can lock my credit as he's attempted to open credit cards in my name. I'm trying extremely hard to save, but I'm working with a strict budget, and my only freedoms are really for the food. The 600 is for the entire month- he drops me off at the grocery store once a week. On Mondays I cook Steak and Potato's (he is fine with any type of potato as long as its the side) On Tuesday I cook tacos and I have to include white queso or he will refuse to eat On Wednesday and Thursday I do a casserole. My friend has a pretty big appetite and when she comes over she frequently eats many of my groceries. I am on a limited budget and I cannot afford to feed her appetite. When she comes over she will typically eat 40-60$ worth of groceries. I am all for feeding my guests refreshments and providing snacks and meals and I only invite my friends over when I’m in the financial position to host. The friend in question asks me almost weekly if she can come over, she usually says she’s having a hard time and needs a friend. I am always hesitant to have her over because of the amount of my groceries she helps herself to. If I have a full multipack of food she will leave me with one or twos in addition to having whatever else she finds in my fridge or pantry. I recently addressed my concern with her and told her that if I invite her over I plan on providing snacks/ meals however if she asks to come over she needs to provide her own food. She did not take this well and felt I was shaming her eating habits (she does have a tendency to find comfort in food and often struggles with over eating). When I got back to the dining room, everyone looked so shocked I thought my cat had farted (his mouse farts could suffocate an elephant). Then I saw that Melissa had four pieces of lasagna heaped on her plate, two in her salad bowl, and two in her soup bowl. Polly was glaring like "don't you dare say a word." Melissa seemed utterly oblivious. I didn't know what to do. I just sat down. Joan and I shared one piece of lasagna, and everyone else got a full piece. I cut the cake into equal portions for dessert, but I had to make an extra batch of sauce and get an extra tub of ice cream out. Melissa ate at least a litre. The next month, on Joan's turn, she served every course pre-plated, and when Melissa asked for extra, Joan apologized and said there was none (truth; Joan is very organized and precise). Melissa and Polly left right after dinner, and Polly texted Joan, berating her for "controlling" Melissa's eating. Polly also texted me saying she trusted I'd be sensitive to Melissa's needs on my next turn. That turn is almost here. My plan was roast dinner (pork and beef). I can easily make lots of cheap veg and dessert, but meat is pricey right now, and I'd have to serve twice the norm to satisfy Melissa. I know I cannot just trust she'll take a tenth of what's there, considering she grabbed a whole lasagna last time.. So do I suck it up and just buy much larger roasts? Do I make a few big batches of cheap soup and biscuits and serve that rather than strain my budget? I don't want to upset Melissa or be a stingy host, but I have never dealt with someone like this before. I was obese, but I would have eaten maybe 2 pieces of lasagna. Not 8. Do I just serve a reasonable-sized meal and tell Polly and Melissa "sorry, that's all I have"? AITAH if I serve less food than I know my guests will want? Edited to add... everyone in the group who doesn't cook (so 7 people before Melissa joined) chips in $25 per meal to whoever hosts. That, until inflation got so bad, covered enough of the food cost to make it feasible. Joan and I have both been simplifying our menus a bit to deal with rising costs, but the idea is to give ourselves and our friends a night off from the humdrum world and pretend we live glamorous, elegant lives. We use fine china and dress nicely and play classical music. Right before Melissa, I was going to ask if we could increase the chip-in to $30 a plate. I have the most resources out of anyone in the group, and I can afford to go out-of-pocket a bit more than Joan. None of the rest have the money, space, or culinary skills to put this together. Joan and I can cook like Julia Child. We are a ragtag lot with a variety of neurodivergences and mental health issues. It has just come to my attention that my mother has no plans for next week's meals, so, what can I do to serve 7 with 65 dollars spread till next Monday? We usually have school lunch, but for obvious reasons thats not happening this week. Anything kid friendly is great, though if I have to choke down one more hotdog I'm going to throw up. Breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks would be greatly appreciated! My fiancé and I are real big on baked pasta. We get a box of pasta, pasta sauce, and deli sliced pepper jack cheese. Pop it into the oven at 350 for 30 mins and it comes out delicious. I’ve been searching for cheap recipes on Pinterest and I swear, at least 80% of them are just pasta with a sprinkle of cheese or salad dressing. I love pasta as much as the next person, but I guess I’m used to more than that. I still live with my parents and we cycle through the same few things: meatloaf, pork chops, hamburgers, and...I’m already struggling to think beyond that. For sides we always go with mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, or fried potatoes. I love those foods and all but I’m looking to branch out, on a budget of course...a pretty tight budget. Whatever the case, a burger, sandwich or wrap is often a safe choice price-wise. EDIT: The point is that you don't come off as a greedy snob taking advantage of someone else's graciousness. Like, staying a few dollars within their scope, as opposed to ordering an extra appetizer and the largest steak on the menu when everyone else has burgers. You WILL come off badly in a lot of social situations if you go too high above their grade.
