Best Canvas for beginners
Hey all! So my boyfriend and I are moving into a new place and have an extra room. I am a ceramicist, and I go to my studio multiple times a week. My bf has really been struggling with finding a hobby and being creative. He used to draw, make comic books, paint, and in my opinion is extremely talented. I wanted to surprise him by setting him up an art studio in our spare room. I am conflicted on the best way to go about it. I dont know if it would be better to buy a bunch of premade canvases so he always has some available to work on, or buy a roll of unstretched canvas. Obviously the roll is the more economic option, but neither of us have experience working with that material. When you stretch a canvas over a frame, can it warp the painting? I love the look of an unstretched canvas painting just hanging on the wall as is. Do I need to prep/prime the canvas if I go that route? Thank you for any advice. 💕 submitted by /u/Equivalent_Print_696 to r/painting [link] [comments]

Common signs or mistakes in amateur paintings
A lot of art gets posted here, with much of it by amateur artists, which is great. However, there are some common issues that new/amateur artists make, which working on will help take their art to the next level. Using paint straight from the tube. One of the biggest giveaways of an inexperienced painter is applying pure, unmixed colors directly from the tube. More experienced painters almost always mix their colors to create more nuanced palettes, which are more in harmony. Even if you want a "red," you should create your own, as the color should be specific to your painting and align with #2 below. This also applies to whites and blacks - mix them with other colors to create temperature variations. No limited or guiding palette. Beginners often use every color they own, resulting in chaotic, disjointed paintings. Experienced painters typically work with a limited palette of 5-8 colors that harmonize well together. This creates better unity throughout the piece, as the colors chosen are designed to work with each other, or create interesting tension, and working with a palette actually makes color mixing easier. Choose a palette (you can find common palettes online) before you start and stick to it. Skipping the planning stage. Many beginners dive straight into painting without thumbnails, value studies, or compositional planning. This often leads to weak compositions, poor focal points, and structural issues that become harder to fix as the painting progresses. Even a quick 10-minute sketch can save hours of frustration and significantly improve your final piece. Starting on a stark white canvas. Painting directly on bright white canvas makes it difficult to judge values and colors accurately. Most experienced painters tone their canvas with a neutral wash (burnt sienna, raw umber, or a cool gray) before starting (for oils, acrylics, etc., but not watercolors). This mid-tone provides a reference point and helps you see both your lights and darks more accurately. Trying to complete everything in one sitting. Good paintings are built in layers. Rushing through a piece in one session often results in muddy colors, overworked areas, and a lack of depth. Experienced painters will do multiple sessions with drying time in between, allowing for glazing, refinement, and thoughtful decision-making rather than reactive painting. Also, taking time away from the painting allows you to approach it with fresh eyes and adjust any potential issues or find areas of improvement. Neglecting values. Color choices are important, but value (light and dark) is what makes a painting readable and creates depth. If your values are wrong, beautiful colors won't save the painting. Try squinting at your work or take a black-and-white photo to check if your value structure is solid. Being afraid of dark darks and light lights. Inexperienced painters may not push the contrast, sitting in the middle value range. Push your darks darker and your lights lighter to create drama and dimension. Your painting should have a full range of values from near-black to near-white. Overworking and not knowing when to stop. There's a point in every painting where continued work starts making it worse rather than better. Learning to recognize this moment comes with experience, but being mindful of it can help you preserve the freshness and energy in your work. Learning to edit and to be self-critical is important in any work. I hope this helps! Note: I'm just a guy with an art degree (many years ago) who has done a lot of different types of art over the years (painting, sculpture, etc.) and enjoys seeing people's posts. I'm not a professional by any means, and I use these concepts and similar ones as a mental checklist when I'm working on something to help guide my work. For example, I'm not great with color (being slightly colorblind), so using tried & true palettes is helpful for me. Difference between cheap beginners grade canvas (as seen in Walmart, Target, Dollar Tree, wherever) and expensive pro grade cotton duck or linen for experienced artists?
I've only been painting for a couple of years. At some point I realised that even though my paints and papers come from art supply shops, my canvases never do. Most of my earlier paintings (in acrylic) were done on mixed media paper or the cheap 280gsm stretched canvas you get from bargain shops. (I mentioned American retailers in the question because I know so many people will relate. The shops I use (in London) are Poundland (£2 for a 30x40cm /12"x16" canvas) or The Works (£10 for a 60x75cm/24"x30") or I go online.) Recently I bought some premium grade 380gsm canvases. I can see at a glance that they are heavier and so presumably better quality. MY QUESTION to experienced painters is it worth buying more expensive canvases? What's the difference in practical terms? What do you use and why? submitted by /u/Glittering_Gap8070 to r/acrylicpainting [link] [comments]

How to create a canvas for a beginner needlepointer?
Hello all! My wife inherited her late grandmother's needlepoint materials and some half-finished canvases, but her grandma had been doing it for decades so most of the canvases appear to be very complex designs with many colors, and if they even came with instructions those have been long since lost. She took a beginner class and has been steadily filling in the unfinished background of the most complete of the grandma canvases, and has been really enjoying it so far. I'm an artist and I want to make her a nice simple design of our cat for christmas, but I'm not a needlepointer (or fiber artist at all) so I want to make sure what I think looks simple would, in fact, be easy to stitch. https://preview.redd.it/0igkjftj3csf1.png?width=893&format=png&auto=webp&s=a188e157b574cd040fd4f5325b999071667a725f Does the above look like something that would translate well to needlepoint and be doable for a beginner at 12x12" or 14x14"? Does it need to be simpler, and if so, what are the design qualities that make a needlepoint design complex, other than number of colors involved? I found many posts about transferring designs and painting techniques and I think I can handle that part fine, but I'm lost on what type of canvas to get and how to estimate yarn amounts from a given design, so any advice there would also be super. Thanks! submitted by /u/micathemineral to r/Needlepoint [link] [comments]

[Check Latest Arrivals acrylic paint for canvas on Amazon.] best Acrylic Paint for Canvas 2025: Top Brands Reviewed Acrylic paint has revolutionized the art world, offering a versatile and accessible medium for artists of all skill levels. whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your artistic journey, selecting the right acrylic paint for canvas can drastically impact the quality and longevity of your artwork. With a plethora of brands and formulations available, navigating the options can be overwhelming. This review aims to simplify the process by highlighting the top acrylic paint brands for canvas in 2025, providing a comprehensive analysis of their key features, benefits, and ideal user profiles. We'll delve into the specifics of each brand, offering a detailed comparison to help you make an informed decision and unleash your creative potential. [Explore top Rated acrylic paint for canvas on Amazon.] Key Features Analysis Selecting the right acrylic paint involves considering several key features that directly influence the painting experience and the final result. These features include pigment quality, viscosity, drying time, lightfastness, and range of available colors. Each attribute plays a crucial role in determining the suitability of a paint for various techniques and artistic styles.Pigment Quality: Assessing the concentration and quality of pigments is paramount. Higher pigment concentration yields richer, more vibrant colors and allows for greater control over opacity and coverage. Student-grade paints often contain less pigment, leading to less intense hues and requiring multiple layers for adequate coverage. Artist-grade paints, on the other hand, boast a higher pigment load, resulting in superior color saturation and archival quality. The choice between student and artist grade depends largely on your budget and the level of professionalism you aspire to achieve. Viscosity: The thickness or thinness of acrylic paint affects its handling properties and suitability for different techniques. High-viscosity paints, also known as heavy-body paints, are thick like butter and ideal for impasto techniques, creating textured surfaces, and retaining brushstrokes. They offer excellent control and minimal running. Low-viscosity paints, or fluid acrylics, are thinner and flow more easily, making them suitable for glazing, detail work, and airbrushing. Medium-viscosity paints strike a balance, providing versatility for a wide range of applications. Drying Time: Acrylic paint dries relatively quickly compared to oil paints, a characteristic that can be both advantageous and challenging. Fast drying times allow artists to work in layers quickly, preventing colors from blending and maintaining sharp edges.Though, this also requires efficient workflow and can make blending more difficult. Retarders can be added to acrylics to slow down the drying process, extending the blending window and preventing paint from forming a skin on the palette. Understanding and managing drying time is crucial for achieving desired effects.Lightfastness: Lightfastness refers to the paint's resistance to fading or discoloration when exposed to light over time. paints with good lightfastness ratings (typically labeled as ASTM I or II) ensure that the colors remain vibrant and true for decades, preserving the integrity of the artwork. student-grade paints may use less lightfast pigments, leading to potential fading or color shifts over time. For archival-quality artwork intended for long-term display or sale, selecting paints with excellent lightfastness is essential. Color Range: The breadth and depth of a paint brand's color range offer artists greater creative possibilities. A comprehensive color selection includes a wide variety of hues, tints, shades, and specialized colors like metallics, iridescent pigments, and interference colors. This allows for nuanced color mixing and precise replication of desired tones. The availability of different sizes and formats, such as tubes, jars, and sets, also contributes to the overall versatility of the paint range. Key features of top acrylic paints for canvas include: High Pigment Concentration Controlled Viscosity Fast Drying Times Excellent Lightfastness Wide Color Range [Explore Top Rated acrylic paint for canvas on Amazon.] Core Benefits using high-quality acrylic paint on canvas offers several tangible benefits for artists, enhancing both the creative process and the final artwork. These benefits include improved color vibrancy, enhanced durability, increased versatility, and greater ease of use. By selecting the right paint, artists can unlock their creative potential and produce stunning, long-lasting pieces. Improved Color Vibrancy: High-quality acrylic paints with concentrated pigments deliver richer, more intense colors that capture the viewer's attention. These vibrant colors create a more impactful and visually appealing artwork, allowing artists to achieve their desired aesthetic effects. The higher pigment load also translates to better coverage, requiring fewer layers to achieve the desired opacity and preventing the colors from appearing washed out or diluted. This results in a more luminous and eye-catching final product that truly reflects the artist's vision. Enhanced Durability: Acrylic paints are known for their durability and resistance to environmental factors, ensuring that the artwork withstands the test of time. Once dry, acrylic paint forms a flexible, waterproof layer that protects the canvas from moisture, dust, and other potential damage. High-quality paints with excellent lightfastness minimize fading and discoloration, preserving the vibrancy and integrity of the colors for years to come. This durability makes acrylic paints ideal for creating artwork that can be displayed and enjoyed for generations. Increased Versatility: Acrylic paint's versatility allows artists to explore a wide range of techniques and styles on canvas. It can be used for everything from detailed realism to abstract expressionism, and it is compatible with various mediums and additives that can modify its properties. Artists can use acrylics for layering, glazing, impasto, dry brushing, and other creative effects. This versatility makes acrylic paint a favorite among artists who enjoy experimenting and pushing the boundaries of their art. greater Ease of Use: Acrylic paint is known for its ease of use compared to other mediums like oil paint. It is water-based, making cleanup easy and requiring no harsh solvents. Its fast drying time allows for fast layering and prevents colors from blending uncontrollably. Acrylic paint is also relatively non-toxic, making it a safer option for artists of all ages and skill levels. Its user-pleasant nature empowers artists to focus on their creativity without being hindered by complex technical considerations.Archival Quality: Artist-grade acrylic paints are formulated for permanence. They boast archival quality which means they resist yellowing, cracking and fading over time. This ensures that work will remain in pristine condition for decades to come. [Explore Top Rated acrylic paint for canvas on Amazon.] faqs Section Choosing the right acrylic paint for canvas often raises questions among artists, especially those new to the medium. Below are answers to some common queries to help you make an informed decision. What is the difference between student-grade and artist-grade acrylic paint? Artist-grade acrylic paints contain higher concentrations of artist-quality pigments, providing richer colors, better coverage, and greater lightfastness for archival quality.Artist-grade paints are designed for professional artists and serious hobbyists who demand the best possible performance and longevity. Can I use acrylic paint on other surfaces besides canvas? Yes, acrylic paint is incredibly versatile and can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including wood, paper, fabric, metal, and plastic. However, it's often necessary to prepare the surface properly before painting with acrylics to ensure good adhesion. For example, sanding wood or priming metal can create a better surface for the paint to grip. How do I clean my brushes after using acrylic paint? Cleaning acrylic paint from brushes promptly is essential to prevent the paint from drying and hardening, which can damage the bristles. Rinse the brushes thoroughly with water promptly after use. For stubborn paint, a mild soap or brush cleaner can be used. Shape the bristles carefully after cleaning and allow the brushes to dry horizontally or with the bristles pointing downward to prevent water from seeping into the ferrule. Are acrylic paints toxic? Moast acrylic paints are considered non-toxic, but it is always best to check the product label for specific safety details. Avoid ingesting paint or inhaling fumes for prolonged periods. Water surface drive me crasy
Hello there ! One more time I reach the moment when a I want paint water rippled surface and this go bad… This is really difficult for my brain to understand the “3d” placement of the water. I mean I can understand when a look the reference but when I want reproduce the light behavior of the light and create my own wave I fail. Maybe I neeed to go slow, small surface after small surface and look my canvas from some meters. But the gradient is a pain, I use acrylic and maybe with this medium paint water with complicated gradient is just too difficult for me. The paint dry in minutes and I can’t use it anymore. On the canvas, if I don’t brush in 20 seconds it’s over. So I try many layers, I become frustrated and go to overpainting with the result I’ve shared… So I’m here to receive help and tips. And tutorial for this particular exercise. The tutorial I’ve found on YouTube dont paint this style of water surface. Maybe the goal is too hard for a beginner, but I think it can be a really good exercise? Thanks to read me, sorry for the frenglish. submitted by /u/Jean-Fum-Trow to r/painting [link] [comments]

New to Painting & Sharing My Heart on Canvas! Looking for Feedback & Maybe Find Some Homes for My Art!
Hey everyone! I've recently discovered a real passion for painting and have been pouring my heart and soul into every piece I create.(you guys can check few of my work on my profile) I'm not claiming to be a master artist by any means – I'm still very much learning and experimenting. But what I can promise is that every brushstroke comes from a place of genuine love and 100% effort. I'm starting to accumulate a collection of my paintings, and I'm curious about the possibility of sharing them with a wider audience. Honestly, the thought of someone connecting with my art enough to want to own it is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking! So, I have a few questions for this amazing community: * What are some good subreddits where I could share my paintings? I'm open to general art subs, but also any that might be more welcoming to beginners or those with a more "heartfelt" style. * If I were to consider selling some of my pieces, how would you recommend I go about it on Reddit? Are there specific etiquettes or best practices I should be aware of? * Any tips for pricing my art as a beginner? I understand my work might not command high prices right now, and my main goal is to find people who appreciate what I create. * Should I even be thinking about this as a potential part-time gig, or should I focus on enjoying the process for now? I genuinely love painting, and the idea of it contributing in some way is appealing. I'm really open to any and all advice, feedback (be kind!), and suggestions you might have. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any guidance you can offer! Looking forward to connecting with fellow art lovers! 😊 beginnerartist #painting #artforsale #supportartists #newhobby #artcommunity submitted by /u/Majestic-Sock9902 to r/LivingAlone [link] [comments]

AI rant
So, I have a plea to make. While semi-controversial on this sub, some writers do admit to using AI to help them write. When I first read this, I thought it was smart. In a world were editors and publishers are hard to come by, letting AI help you step up your game seems like a cheap and accessible solution. Especially for beginners. However, even with editing, the question still remains: why? AI functions in the same way as your brain does. People seem to forget this. It detects common patterns and errors and finds common solutions. Writing is not just putting down words. Writing is a meditative practice. It is actually so healthy for your brain to stumble across errors and generate solutions by itself. Part of being a writer is being able to generate and ask yourself critical questions. To read your work, edit your work, and analyze your work. You wánt to have practice at the thing AI does for you now! Take this as an example. Chatgpt gives you editing advice. Do you question this advice? Do you ask yourself why certain elements of your writing need to change? Or does chatgpt just generate the most common writing advice? Does it just copy what a “good” story is supposed to be? What ís a good story? To you, to an audience, to what the world might need? Do you question this? I come from a privileged pov of having an editor and an agency now. This came from hard work. I am also an editor myself at a literary magazine. What functions as a “good story” varies. We have had works with terrible grammar published, terrible story archs, terribly written characters. However, in all of these stories, there was something compelling. Something so strangely unique and human that we just hád to publish. We’ve published 16-year olds, old people with dementia, people who barely spoke the language. Stop trying to be perfect. Start being an artist and just throw paint at a canvas, so to speak! For at least ten years, I sat with myself, almost everyday, and just wrote a few thousand words a day. It now makes me able to understand my, and other peoples, work at a deeper level. Actually inviting friends or other writers to read my work and discuss my work made me enthusiastic, view my work in a different light, and made writing so much more human and rewarding. I am now at a point where my brain generates a lot of editing questions. While I still need other people to review my work, I believe the essence of editing and reviewing lies in the social connection I make while doing this. It’s not about being good - it’s about delving deeper into the essence of a story, the importance, the ideas and themes behind the work. And to finish off my rant: AI IS BAD FOR THE CLIMATE. YOU WRITE ABOUT DYSTOPIAN REGIMES THAT THRIVE OFF INEQUALITY AND YOU KEEP USING UNNECESSARY RESOURCES THAT DEPLETE AND DESTROY OUR EARTH? Lol. Anyway: please start loving writing not only for the result, but for the the art of the game, for the love of practice, the love of the craft. In times like these, art is a rebellious act. Writing is. Not using the easy solution is. Do not become lazy, do not take the shortcut, do not end up as a factory. We have enough of those already. Acrylic paint for canvas vans
I've got some brand new shoes I've been wanting to paint. They're black canvas vans with some suede (which I won't be painting on), but I'm just confused on a few things: What do I need to do to prep my shoes? Can I use a quality acrylic paint (Liquitex) in order to paint on a canvas shoe? would I need to add anything to the paint for it to work (or just work better)? Do I need to seal the design? If so, what kind of sealant? Any other tips for a beginner? I'd hate to mess up these shoes because my dad's getting it as a birthday gift, so please, any info is good info! submitted by /u/Soph_isticated1512 to r/CustomShoes [link] [comments]

Painting for Beginners, Part 1: Fundamentals
(OOC: Just pretend this happened before the New Argos games!) Ariadne had been planning this activity for a while, and now that she knew a few people, she felt comfortable making it official. Her posters were colorful, with scenes of fantasy landscapes and waterfalls. She had never taught art before, but she had taken plenty of classes; even a few outside of school. So she felt confident explaining it to others. She even wrote up a lesson plan for herself, as if she was a real teacher or something. When she was finally satisfied, she started setting up easels and canvases, jars of water, paintbrushes, and, most importantly, the paint. Lesson One: Explaining the Fundamentals Color theory, composition, value, and perspective. Color Theory Color theory explains how and why which colors go together and how they affect our perception of a piece. Composition Composition is how objects are placed within the scene. Value Value is the shading or lightening of an object relative to the light sources in the scene. If there is no visible light source in your piece, pick the direction you want it to come from and shade accordingly. For example, a light source on the left will create shadows on the right, and a light source on the right will create shadows on the left. Perspective Perspective is the way the artist chooses to paint the scene. Are we looking at it from above? From the side? Through a keyhole in a locked door? All of these things contribute to the final look and feel of a piece. Today, we're going to learn how to do each one separately before putting them all together. When people started to arrive, Ariadne smiled and started going through her lesson plan. "You don't have to practice the fundamentals eight hours a day to be successful. Sometimes, it's better to make creative pieces and be mindful of how the fundamentals affect the work. Still, I recommend practicing your fundamentals at least as often as you paint other things, just to keep yourself sharp. Today, feel free to follow my examples or paint your way. The most important part of any activity is that you have fun, and don't get too caught up on perfection." With that, she set her canvas full of examples up front for everyone to see, got herself a blank one, and started a new project. She wasn't sure where it would go, but that's what made it fun. submitted by /u/shapedbydreams to r/CampHalfBloodRP [link] [comments]

Beginner here wanting to practice acrylic painting - Thoughts on Canvas cloth?
I am a beginner (never really done any painting up until 2 weeks ago) and have been practicing using Mont Marte acrylic paint and canvas on a board. I find practicing on the canvas boards a bit of a waste because they are a bit expensive for what I'm able to do with them currently. While online shopping, I saw canvas cloth being sold and it seems to be a lot cheaper. Would it be advisable to purchase this and just practice painting on that directly without putting any board or frame? Or is there a drawback or challenge with doing that submitted by /u/martinceld to r/ArtistLounge [link] [comments]
