Awful hamam experience in Cappadocia--Ladies beware.
A group of friends and I (5 women) visited the Alaaddin Hamam in Cappadocia and left in absolute disgust. All started off normally, until we saw two male workers enter our area to take out the trash. We had been to hamams in Dubai, Amman, Istanbul, and even Korean spas in the US and knew this was out of the ordinary. We confirmed with the staff there were no men to be in our area. They assured us: no men. Things took a turn when the hamam was over. We got up from our treatment and there was a family--a man, woman, and young boy, fully clothed and taking pictures of the hamam area. Beyond that, there were two nude men receiving their hamam treatments, in the open, also in our area. We immediately raised the issue with the staff who tried a variety of tactics that ranged from 1) you didn't tell us you didn't want to see men (we did); 2) well you received the service so nothing we can do; or 3) oops but it's over now. One of the male staff kept telling me to be quiet and wouldn't look me in the eye even when I asked. I later found out he was the social media manager--if you look at their promo videos, this will make sense. Another staff member was filming us arguing in the lobby, and we made her delete the videos. The front desk manager was trying to defuse the situation, but also kept pleading with us not to demand a refund because it might affect his job. Notably, this same manager admitted to mistakenly letting the family in the hamam to take pictures as they were wandering and he lost track. Eventually we were able to speak with the owner who essentially said men should not have been in our area and that filming was unacceptable. My honest assessment is the hamam figured a group of American women wouldn't care if men were being bathed in the same room, so they put these guys in with us. They were wrong. The hamam eventually gave us half our money back and tried to offer us a re-do treatment, but we just left in disgust and in tears. If that weren't enough, the hamam experience itself was pretty mediocre and felt more like a gimmick than a true hamam. The stone slabs aren't heated and they use grocery store soap and scrubs. Better can certainly be found. TL;DR Stay away from Alaaddin Hamam in Cappadocia. submitted by /u/StunnaSum to r/travel [link] [comments]

Is a Cappadocia hot air balloon ride actually worth the hype?
I’m planning a trip to Cappadocia and everyone keeps saying the balloon ride is “once in a lifetime.” The prices are kind of high though, so I’m trying to figure out if it’s really that special or just a tourist trend. I was browsing a site called Cappadocia Balloon Ticket that compares different flight types (standard, comfort, premium), but before I book anything I’d love honest opinions from people who’ve actually done it. My trip to Cappadocia, Turkey
We flew from Istanbul to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV), picked up a car from Cappadocia Rent A Car (https://www.cappadociarentacar.net) and stayed in Göreme. We've split our nights between Henna Hotel (https://www.hennahotel.com/en) and Travellers Cave Hotel (https://hotel.travellerscave.com/en) for different views and cave-room styles, and also for the terraces. Both hotels were great and we recommend them. For the balloon flights we went with Turquaz Balloons (https://www.turquazballoons.com/) because of their experience, strong recommendations, and great launch site. Flights depend on wind and weather, so some mornings they don't get the green light, and because of that, as a must have the booking already reserved for your first mornings there. In the worst case possible you might be re-booked for the following available spot or refunded. Göreme is an absolute gem of a town, and it will make you feel like in a magical scenery, the lights, the caves, the restaurants, it's absolutely amazing, and was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. About Cappadocia, I think it offers so much beauty and experiences like: jeep tours, horse rides at sunset or sunrise, pottery workshops, amazing valleys, and caves. It's an amazing region to discover. -- Approx costs we paid for 2 persons: flights €500 (from Istanbul to Nevşehir ), hotels €1100, car €300, balloon €550, jeep tour €100, horse riding €100, pottery workshop €50, other entries for underground cities or open air museums/chimneys at around €15-20 per entry. submitted by /u/andru0 to r/travel [link] [comments]

Going around and travelling Cappadocia/Goreme?
Hello! So my friend and I are going to Cappadocia in August. We will be there for approximately 2.5 days. And I have some questions about visiting there. This will be my first time visiting, and I have no idea what to expect. I'm unsure about public transport availability (I've heard there are buses, but I'm not sure to what extent). That's why I'm currently doing research and asking around. And I have some questions 1. Will the taxi scam/have us pay overpriced taxi fares? Or what are some scams, etc, that I need to be careful with Should I book a tour, or should I just go around on my own by walking and public transportation? Must go places and places that are not that good? Any suggestion, recommendation, information, etc is highly welcomed! Thank you very much! submitted by /u/TiredWorkingStudent to r/AskTurkey [link] [comments]

Cappadocia Itinerary Feedback – 3 Days in Göreme (No Car)
Hi all! I’m traveling with my family to Cappadocia and staying in Göreme for 3 full days. We won’t have a car, so we’ll be relying on guided tours, taxis, and walking. We’re not very interested in balloon rides, horseback riding, or ATV tours, but we love exploring and hiking. Here’s what I’ve planned so far: Day 1: Love Valley Uçhisar Castle (planning to hike through Pigeon Valley to get there) If we have extra time, we’ll take a taxi to Zelve Open Air Museum Day 2: Green Tour (visiting Göreme Panorama, Yaprakhisar Panorama, Derinkuyu Underground City, Selime Monastery, Ihlara Valley, and Pigeon Valley) Day 3: Göreme Open Air Museum Hike through Red and Rose Valleys Visit Paşabağ (Monks Valley) and Devrent Valley I'd love to hear any feedback or recommendations: any must-see spots we've missed that would fit better, better ways to combine stops? Thanks so much in advance! submitted by /u/Impressive_Bag1714 to r/travel [link] [comments]

How easy is it to get around Cappadocia without a tour or a rental car?
I'm gonna be in Cappadocia for 2 full days with my mom. I'd like to make the most of our stay and thought a rental car would be the most practical way since we land early on the first day. I'm wary about renting a car after reading horror stories about shady upcharges or broken cars, even at more well known agencies like Enterprise. But I don't love the restrictive timelines of the tour options I've seen (only one hour at the underground cities for example). We're staying at Roc of Cappadocia which appears to be in Goreme. Is it feasible for people who don't travel to foreign countries much to use the bus system to go to places like Uchisar Castle, Love Valley, the underground cities, Fairy Chimneys, etc? I know many of those spots outside of the underground cities are a short drive from my hotel, but I don't know much about the bus system, waiting times, understanding the routes, etc. Are any of the must see sights within walking distance (20 min or less) of each other? Any input is appreciated, including ways to not get scammed when renting a car (besides obvious things like taking pics and video of the car before pick up). submitted by /u/ihopesheseesthisbro to r/travel [link] [comments]

Trip Report - 4 Days in Cappadocia, Turkey
I (40-something American Male) just returned from a 4-day solo adventure in Cappadocia and here's my trip report! Cappadocia has been near the top of my to-do list for a long time, with the balloon ride, visiting the underground cities, hiking amongst the fairy chimneys and a sunset ATV tour being my planned activities. Not everything went according to plan though... Lodging I stayed at the Antique Terrace Cave Suites for $65 (all references to costs in this post are converted to US currency) per night. Typically when I travel I prefer social hostels, but on this trip I wanted to be near the small downtown area in Goreme and to experience a "cave" hotel. I enjoyed this hotel and the front desk staff were incredibly accommodating and helped me book lots of activities (everything but the balloon ride, which I'd pre-booked through GetYourGuide). DAY 1 Because my flight wasn't arriving until 9 pm the night before, I'd originally planned my first full day to just get settled, buy a sim card and explore Goreme. Unfortunately, while I was at the airport I looked at the weather forecast and it looked pretty nasty all week, so I texted the balloon company and asked if I could switch my balloon flight to my first day instead of my second day, and they obliged. Then things went south. My flight from Istanbul to Nevsehir was delayed 2 hours and after the shuttle transfer I didn't make it to my hotel until almost midnight, which gave me only a few hours to sleep before my 4:30 am pickup for the balloon. Ugh. After getting picked up, the balloon company drove the full van out to a rally site, but we ended up sitting there for 30 minutes until a guy finally came on board and told us all flights were canceled due to wind. Double Ugh. I went back to the room and slept a few hours before waking up just in time before the hotel's breakfast buffet ended. The day was off to a bad start but breakfast was good and the weather was great, so I took a $2 taxi to the Open Air Museum, which I really enjoyed. I booked a 2-hour sunset ATV ride through 4 different valleys for that evening which was also great and only cost $20. Day 2 I woke up on the second day feeling a little sick. I think it was from the travel and lack of sleep, so I found a little pharmacy in town that sold me some Turkish Ephedrine and that did the trick. It pretty much rained all day, but I had an umbrella and didn't let that slow me down. I explored all around that little town, going up and down back alleys and looking at all the shops. (I'd received a text the night before that the balloon rides were canceled, so at least I didn't have to wake up at 4:30 am). I finally made it to a Sim card store and they tried to sell me a $50 data plan which was outrageous, so hard pass. I tried to activate a roaming plan through my home carrier (Wind/Tre from Italy), but they weren't able to activate my phone, so I just decided to wing it and rely on my hotel and restaurant wi-fi for the trip. In some ways, being freed from my phone was liberating. Despite the bad weather, I had set up a personal challenge for this day - to visit both underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli in one day. I got some good advice from this thread, but even though people recommended renting a car or going as part of an organized Green or Red tour, I opted to take the bus from Goreme to Nevsehir and then another bus to Derinkuyu. This cost ~$5 total and the trip time was only about an hour. I was proud of myself because the taxis wanted to charge $50 to take me (I asked several). Derinkuyu was great, and I loved being able to explore it on my own without the restraints of a tour timeline. I took a short taxi to Kaymakli, and the driver agreed to wait for me then take me back to Goreme. He charged me the Turkish Lira equivalent of $20 total for both trips and waiting for me, which I was happy to pay and throw in a nice tip. Day 3 More bad weather, balloons were canceled again. My hotel had some good suggestions for Turkish spas in town, so I decided to treat myself to a spa day. At spa #1 I was able to get a Turkish Hammam bath, followed by a 60-minute massage and facial mud treatment for only $70. Later that afternoon I went to Spa #2 for a 30-minute foot massage for $20. Day 4 My final chance at a balloon flight, and it was canceled again due to weather. Luckily, the balloon company let me reschedule after each cancellation, and besides the first day where I got picked up at 4:30 am, they were able to text each night before to let me know about the next day, so at least I was able to get some good sleep on this trip. The weather cleared up early, so I was able to go hiking through several of the famous Cappadocia valleys. I really love that landscape! Final Thoughts I didn't get to do the balloon ride, or even sit on my terrace and watch other people fly in balloons. There were just none during my entire stay in Cappadocia. Major bummer, but I did so many other activities I still consider the trip a success. One interesting thing to point out - The current exchange rate is $1USD = 20 Turkish Lira. Just over a year ago $1 only got you 10TL, so prices are incredibly low right now in Turkey. Your US currency literally gets you twice as much, and because of this I was able to get great deals on souvenirs, food and all the activities. I made reservations and ate at the highest rated (on Google Maps) restaurants Goreme had to offer and really splurged on my meals, and felt like I was hardly paying anything for it. Sometimes trips don't always work out perfectly. Last month I had a near-perfect trip to Vienna which I posted about here. Next month I'll be visiting Barceleona for the first time, and I already have a loose itinerary planned but I have a deeper appreciation now to make the most of any trip just in case things don't always go according to plan. submitted by /u/BrazenBull to r/solotravel [link] [comments]

In 1963, a Turkish man uncovered an underground city after knocking down a wall in his home. The ancient city, called Derinkuyu in the region of Cappadocia, is 18 storeys deep and housed 20,000 people. Chapels, schools and even stables were found there.
