Does anyone else car camp with their rav4?
I use a full weather tech window deflector kit to black it out when sleeping. As well as a power station to run a fan for circulation. Cracking the windows is necessary, so I also installed wind deflectors on the windows and use bug screen when needed. This bed set up is great because it packs down and can be left in the back to deploy whenever. I do not think you can get away with no bed frame in this car, I tried without it once and the incline is way too much to be comfortable. submitted by /u/Delicious_Junket_353 to r/rav4club [link] [comments]

Finally finished my first car camping build!
Built in for a 2021 Honda HRV. It took a decent amount of planning. I’m a tall guy, so I wanted it to fold out long enough for me to fit, but also quickly fold away when not in use. I used 4” friction hinges for the extensions that are held in with 1/4-20 steel threaded inserts to beef up the weight capacity of the hinges. SteelTek flanges and structural pipe for the legs, 6 Turnbuckles and D-rings to prevent any movement when driving, and hooked hasp latches to hold the extensions down while they’re folded up. I stapled indoor/outdoor rug to cover the wood, and used black leather dye as a wood stain. I understand it might be structurally overbuilt with fasteners out the wazoo, but didn’t want to take any chances of it breaking while mid slumber in the middle of nowhere! Now all I gotta do is outfit it with fun little additions like a laptop stand or cooling fans that fit in the windows or other neat accessories. I’m very excited for the lady and I to take it out for a test run this spring! submitted by /u/Mochanoodle to r/carcamping [link] [comments]

I made my own kitchen chuck box for car camping
I was tired of the Home Depot tote filled with all of the cooking gear. I took some 1/2” maple plywood and made a chuck box. I added a stainless plate to cut on, kneed dough, and as a bit of a heat shield if I was to use an MSR style stove. I added threaded inserts on the bottom for adjustable feet as well as luggage handles on the sides and latches to keep the front closed. I’m happy with how it came out. I’ll be giving it a test in this weekend’s snow in the Midwest. I currently have it filled with: Coleman stove 2x propane bottles Pots Pans Gloves Foil Paper plates Real plates Silverado Cooking tooks Cups Mugs Plates Bowls Paper towel Lighter Gloves Cooking tools Ziploc bags Seasonings Oils A few freeze dried back up meals submitted by /u/TheRigSauce to r/CampingGear [link] [comments]

Was car camping a dumb idea?
So I traded my Subaru for a minivan so I could take long road trips and sleep in my car to save money. I took all the seats out and built a platform for a cot and some storage space. I bought lots of equipment like power banks, camping stove and other things as recommended from other car campers. I took some short five day trips and tweaked things as needed. Now I'm onmy extended trip where I'll be gone for six weeks or more. I stay in state parks because I want access to a bathroom and I'm not interested (read: scared) in stealth camping. I hadn't booked all my stays because I figured there would be plenty of room in the winter, but I couldn't find a spot anywhere in Fort Bragg for tonight. I ended up booking at Motel Six because they are very dog friendly. The Expedia rate at the motel was only $41. The campsite would have been over $50. Now I'm asking myself why I don't put the seats back in my car, get rid of all the gear and just stay at Motel 6 every night. I'm not spending any more money; in fact, in some cases I'm saving money. Plus, I get a real bed and a real shower. I can still bring the cooler and camp stove and stop at day use parks to make my lunch and dinner so I can hike the trails and enjoy their beauty. I'm feeling kinda foolish about the whole thing 'cause I think I just got carried away watching hundreds of videos about all these retired women converting their vans and minivans into cozy little homes on wheels, and I guess I just wanted to get some fairy lights be one of the cool kids too. Has anyone else had this kind of epiphany? submitted by /u/k8nwashington to r/roadtrip [link] [comments]

Car camping setup and review!
I spent a lot of time on this sub looking at pictures of people’s car camping setups before I finally went out and did it. Thank you everyone that made detailed posts or comments, it was super helpful with planning! I went dispersed camping with some friends (3 days 2 nights) and slept in my Crosstrek while they used tents, so here’s my honest review and what I used. my gear - window covers: subaru brand windshield cover I got from the dealer for the front window, then a cheap collapsable cover from Amazon I wedged in the back window. Both of them worked great. - Bug screens: two nets to slide over the windows on the back two doors. Super helpful with privacy and let me crack my windows without worrying about bugs. - Sleeping pad: I used MOXILS ultralight sleeping pad, which has an attached pillow section I just flipped up and used as a headboard. I know that takes away a few inches of space, but it didn’t bother me. I could still almost completely stretch out if I wanted and the sleeping pad fit great. Rather than stuff something in the footwells, I just pulled out the headrest and turned it around so the flat part was facing up. - Pillows and blankets: I didn’t bother with a sleeping bag and instead just dragged all my blankets off my bed at home. Because my windows were cracked all night, the temperature inside the car was roughly the same as outside. I didn’t need a fan or anything, but it was just me in the car and the weather was very mild (40-50 at night and 70-80 during the day). - Carabiner and string lights: cool, but not super useful when I was actually in the car ready to sleep because they just got in the way. They were great when it was dark and I had my trunk open because they gave off just enough light for me to find stuff, and the carabiner kept the “hatch open” light from turning on. But after the first night I took them down and just used a lantern. - Tarp/picnic blanket: I ended up moving it to the rear passenger door (in the picture it’s by the trunk) so I could get out of the car and put on shoes without stepping in dirt. Nice to have but not essential. - Normal camping stuff: chairs, cooler, food, water, cookware, lights, clothes, hiking gear, etc. other comments and notes - Size: the interior was surprisingly spacious for sleeping. It was slightly cramped when I was trying to get dressed, just because you can’t sit up fully, but other than that I could stretch out and roll over fairly easily as an average-sized woman (5’7). And keep all my gear in the car. - Getting in/out: the trunk doesn’t open from the interior, so I crawled out the side door closest to me. It wasn’t particularly easy or graceful but not impossible either. The hardest part was changing out of sweaty, dirty clothes at the end of the day and trying to not get your blankets dirty, but I can say the same about tent camping. - Safety (people): because I was with other people and not at a normal campsite, I wasn’t super careful with things like my phone, wallet, camera and keys. If we weren’t so far from other campers, I’d probably lock my car at night or do a better job at hiding everything when I slept. - Safety (animals): I didn’t store any food, or anything that smelled like food, in the car with me. I was super paranoid that a raccoon would try to like, stuff itself through the window while I slept. I was so happy I went and the Crosstrek worked great. It’s not the most glamorous, but it’s comfortable and nice if you want to camp somewhere but don’t have a tent. Cheers! submitted by /u/Mango_Moon46 to r/Crosstrek [link] [comments]

The Michigan Department of Transportation wants to prohibit people from camping, living in their cars and leaving their vehicles for long periods in the state’s rest areas and carpool lots.
Currently, MDOT lacks any official administrative rules to enforce a prohibition on these activities, though officials say they can impound a vehicle if it hasn’t been moved in three days. That’s why MDOT is now asking the state’s departmental rulemaking body to allow these new rules. submitted by /u/Snoo_34963 to r/Michigan [link] [comments]

First time car camping: Expectations VS Reality
So before I begin, I just want to say that this is not meant to pile on or repeat the same complaints that have already been said. Rather this highlights the things that in my personal experience for camping, went very differently than what this subreddit led me to believe they’d be like. Day 0: Come prepared to idle. If you have an older car or if your car has a lot of miles on it, you may want to consider renting. A u-haul truck is only $20 a day. I had to spend $1100 yesterday to fix damages on my car that came directly from idling/stop & go for nearly 9 hours. If you care about seeing Dombresky/having your day 0, come EARLY and be prepared to sit and wait. This may be counterintuitive but I actually recommend dehydrating yourself a few hours before you’re going to get in line, and only drinking enough water to satisfy any thirst to avoid having to urinate on the side of the road. Just mentally prepare to practice patience in ways you may never have before. If you do this, start chugging waters back to back the MINUTE you have access to the bathrooms. Bathrooms: It is VERY hit or miss, some porta potty’s seemed to be cleaned much more often than others. Always bring extra toilet paper and sanitizer as they run out often. I also recommend a mask or hankercief to cover your nose because the oder was BAD. People in our group were puking simply from the overwhelming smell. Showers: Nowhere near as bad as the subreddit made them sound. Definitely wear shower shoes, but I showered everyday and never felt that they were dirty. The line was never more than 20 minutes, and it goes quick if you are waiting with friends. They were cleaning porta potty’s right next to the line and the smell was AWFUL, but if you use your towel to cover your nose, it helps. Camping Shuttles: This is where I feel reddit failed me. This subreddit made it sound SO EASY and convenient to use the shuttles to the local supermarket to get ice or extra supplies. We planned to go everyday for ice and lunch, but upon getting to the shuttle line, we found that it was over an hour wait in 100 degree weather in the direct sun to even get on the shuttle. Same with the general store…Day 1 we spend almost two hours running around the campground trying to find ice, and overheated ourselves. Eventually we gave up and went back to our campsite and later someone came around in a truck selling ice. This was the only way we could get it, and they did not come at all on day 3, so our cold food went completely bad. Pregaming/Drinking: Out of my entire 12 person group, not one of us could get a buzz going at the campgrounds no matter how much we drank. The relentless heat made it so that we would sweat it out and it would turn into an instant headache before we could even get a light buzz, despite constant rehydration. Leaving the fest: DO NOT try to leave right when the festival ends, you WILL be caught in traffic. I highly recommend taking a nap and waking up around 3:30/4am. By then the rush of people leaving at the end of the festival will be gone, but most people trying to grab a couple hours of sleep have not woken up yet. We were the only ones in our lot leaving at this time, and did not wait at all. This is mostly just advice that I wish I had before going in. I spent HOURS researching and I felt like I was prepared for anything. Only for all my expectations to go completely differently than what was presented online. If you’re type A and tend to overplan, I highly recommend doing whatever you can to LET GO of your plans. I honestly wish I had researched LESS, so that my expectations weren’t completely thrown off. This is all just in regards to car camping by the way. The festival itself was as magical as ever, and I in no way regret coming. Unfortunately I will never ever do car camping again, and I really really wanted to love it. submitted by /u/mayapapaya645 to r/Coachella [link] [comments]

Why are kerosene heaters not as popular for car camping in the Western countries as they are in Asian countries?
Car camping newbie here. I’ve been a lurker in some Asian camping online groups/communities for a little bit recently and noticed that they use kerosene heaters for winter camping quite often (and the heaters and camping gears in the Asian market in general are so aesthetically pleasing imo) and seems like the western camping communities don’t use those heaters much if at all. I see posts here from people asking for heat source recommendations for winter camping and many recommend using Nalgene bottles+hot water and electric blankets, but what about for a group cooking/chilling in a tent/shelter where those options and a fire pit might not be a good choice? My guess based on my observation is that they tent to use large tunnel tents/shelters and tarps more often and thus have more living space so using a heater is safer(?) and people here (US) use backpacking/smaller tents more often (I don’t see tarps at campgrounds much) and sit outside with a fire pit for warmth instead, which heaters wouldn’t be safe and necessary I assume? Just genuinely curious about this difference that I observed, thanks and happy camping 🏕️ submitted by /u/isoplayer to r/CampingGear [link] [comments]
