tldr: these photos are all 100% ai, and i got my $ back. my post to r/isitAI: i met a young artist at a small town crafts fair on Mother's Day (one week ago). she had some cards with prints of fairy paintings, and also some textile pieces with similar prints on them. it was beginning to rain, and nearing 5pm when the fair was supposed to wrap up. i loved what i saw of these art pieces she had sitting out, but didn't want to keep her from packing up her stand. i took her card, which had only an email address and a QR code for Instagram. again, i had only briefly looked at what she had to offer because of the conditions, but i had seen she does "fairy portraits" and was excited to learn more. i emailed her on Tuesday and discussed a custom acrylic painting. she said she's just starting out with selling, and wants to offer the custom on a 18 × 24 inch canvas for $50. $25 now, and $25 once it's completed. i was like ummm yes, of course? and fully planned on sending more than $25 for the second payment! she asked when i needed it finished by, and i asked how long it usually takes, she said 1-3 weeks, and i was like "perfect! please take your time, looking forward to seeing it!" on Wednesday i have lunch with a friend and she asks to see the other art from said artist, so i take out the business card and try to scan the QR code. it doesn't work. then my friend tries, and nothing. i was confused but i didn't think a lot of it since it could be a misprint, and this was a beginner seller? i don't know. now i am thinking about this detail further. it is now Sunday again, 5 days after the custom order discussion, and i get the first photo attached here emailed to me. i felt like something was "off" but honestly i wasn't sure what it was. it was then i realized i hadn't made a plan to pick up this painting, so i asked where to meet her for it. my thought was "i will wait to send the second $25 + tip until i could take a proper look at it in person." she tells me she is "out of town for a wedding" and will let me know when she is back so we can meet up. again, benefit of the doubt; i didn't see the photo until 3 hours after it was sent, so maybe she left between then and when i replied?? but at that point i was seeing too many flags to ignore. so i politely asked for at least 2 progress pictures if she took any, to which she replied with the second and third photo attached. looking at the progress pictures in comparison to the finished painting, i am seeing inconsistencies in the hair (the way it cuts off at some points, and swirls in others). i also noticed she has 6 toes.... SIGH. i want to believe people are good. i am afraid to send an email to this artist about the inconsistencies and possible AI use unless i am 100% sure. i do not want to accuse anyone of anything they didn't do, but also am in no place to pay $50+ for an AI generated painting that i may not receive? i guess the positive part is i only spent $25 and could possibly file a claim with Cashapp? idk. i may have fallen into a trap with this one 🫠 i figured she was legit because i met her in person.. what do you think? does anyone see something i don't? do i just wait until she emails again, or press the issue further? ~ r/isitAI concurred that it is AI. now what..? ETA: i am genuinely looking for advice, like what to say to her? i am Autistic, i need some help, i thought i could ask here but people are being so sarcastic. i understand this is reddit, but please direct that elsewhere. i believe in retrospect that the items she was selling in person were made with printed AI designs, they were all between $5-$15. there were no physical paintings in person, only an "ad" for fairy portraits on her chalk sign. UPDATE! someone suggested to request $25 instead of sending in hopes she would accidentally send my $ back and she literally did it, THANK YOU!!! 🙏 UPDATE 2, next day (copy and paste comment): i haven't heard anything from her, but the people in charge of the craft fair got back to me this evening. they said they received more feedback about this person that aligned with mine, and that she will not be welcomed back for "various reasons." to be clear, the other art i personally saw were prints of AI generated art on cards and canvas bags. i hadn't noticed this at the time. for AI-defenders, the issue at hand was that she was dishonestly claiming to have painted said images while being fully aware that they are made from combining thousands of other artists' work into a picture from a prompt. had she claimed to be a "digital artist" at the very least, we wouldn't be in this position. what was her goal with this? idk. she seemed pretty amateur with the conversation so maybe this was a test run. strange. many of you have pointed out that the first red flag is accepting a painting for $50 total. this was her price, not negotiated. i would like to reiterate that i had no idea what to expect from this offer, the other examples i had seen were small, and when i reached out she seemed excited to paint a bigger one. if she had taken the 1-3 weeks to actually paint a portrait like this, i would literally repay her ten-fold. i am aware of what an artist deserves for their talent and time. i do believe if she had named a higher price i would have been more likely to ask for photos of her previous work, and maybe she was trying to avoid that. who knows, can't make sense of people like this. for everyone saying i am "insufferable," etc. ~ you are bullying someone asking for help online that you don't know when you could have just kept scrolling. that's pretty insufferable, too. but sorry that i write a lot, no one said you had to read it. peace and love 🕊️💞 FINAL EDIT: for those who doubt AI could make something like this, here is an image someone here DMed me that they created with a rather simple prompt (also shared). it's scary what AI can do. that studio doesn't even exist. There are millions of factors that are in play in economics, but my ultra genius mind believes these numbers should work, and i think we should try it to "find out" how it works. and we can always stop the plan if it stops working with my plan, theres no risk of anything bad. society can just try out my plan, and it might work, or it might not. and if it doesnt work, you just cancel it and go back to the old system with no UBI in my plan, the government will simply "create new money" to create the UBI. and money is just numbers in a computer anyway. and i think over time a 10% sales tax should totally work to "rake back" the money slowly, eventually balancing the system and having minimal inflation also my UBI plan does not remove jobs or anything like that. no. there will still be many jobs society needs to function, those jobs will pay well, and people will do those jobs and make alot of extra money the purpose of UBI is that it just makes society better. it is good. it is smart. viewers at same time. bcuz ppl in the guild will see us getting large. and also, the spambot will give me constant NEW SUPPLY of new people to read my manifesto and turn into viewers. haha. this idea is genius. if people tell me to screw off, who cares, i just keep using the spambot and i keep gaining new supply of people to have them read my manifesto LOL and then i just keep gaining new viewers and getting MORE AND MORE FAMOUS LOL HAHAHA THIS IDEA IS GENIUS AS FUKK . and also, i think my politics are smart and most people will like my political ideas anyway. i think most people are smart and constantly farming new people. and then also, i will do good youtube videos soon, like food videos and stuff. and i think as my youtube viewcount gets higher, the algo will push me more so all these things combined will make me famous. I'm an insane lurker here, have attempted all the dumbed down smartphone guides and none of them have worked for me: someone who doesn't use IOS, doesn't like minimalism, and someone who's plan is to survive in the 2000s once more. So.. I'm making a guide on how I live my everyday life without certain smart features. Instead of saying "dumbed smartphone," I'm coining the term "midphone" for any dumbed down smartphone that is in the middle range between smart and dumb. While I will be calling it a midphone, the midphone is customized to the point where its functions are different from a smartphone and a dumbphone, but its base is still a smartphone of any kind, running any OS. Specifically I am running base Android 14. SECTION ONE: The Dysfunction of Google I have longed wished to not associate with Google. Though it is a convenience for me to have that connection, I realized around 5 years ago that Google and its tech became too focused on giving people more things rather than giving them more accessibility. I see the Ads, they sell things that can help the disabled and the poor, yet they further disenfranchise them by focusing on money, money, money - never saving the environment and its children. I realized that if I was going to have a phone, it wasn't going to be controlled by Android's investment. While I still think Android has a better interface and a user-friendly mobile sphere, I can't seem to shake off my discomfort. This is why for my current midphone, I have disabled most of Google's account linking, deleted my advertising ID, regularly check that all functions are disabled, went in and deleted many google related apps, blocked, cleared catches and storages, disabled and stopped them as well. Turn off Usage & Diagnostics, as well as Firebase App Indexing. Go into many of the Google apps, and uninstall updates!!!! Make sure they can't modify system settings! Click show system apps, and modify them as you please, but make sure to not turn off Google Play Services until you are sure MicroG or another service can provide for you. My phone does not fit the bill, and I am not fit for running ROMs. I also pay my phone bill through Dumb Wireless, and I pay $49/$50 a month for Unlimited. As long as you recognize that Android needs Google, you acknowledge that you are still going to be running Google, but in its most limited, restricted, and dysfunctional way. You are not to remove it, you are to make it so that it cannot function properly and it cannot connect you to its other services and features. You are opt-ing out of that. To me, I feel as though active protest must be against not only the aversion to using Google/Android products (dumbphones) but the lack of participating when given the chance (smartphones.) When using both at the same time, you get a midphone. Either way, focus on the dysfunction and disabling Google's ability to watch you. This means not only on your phone, but reducing the amount of times you use a Google account or service in your everyday. It doesn't matter how much distance you have from Google, it matters how persistent you are in reducing it to its barely functioning state. SECTION TWO: Write Down Everything This part is simple. Write down everything you remember, accounts, passwords, log in pages, websites. All of it. You will need it, I swear you will. Google as a password manager sucked, and I know first hand. While I have three other devices running Google, I have disabled a lot of the same Advertising and diagnostics features as my phone. The whole point, again, is to reduce it into a barely functioning state. The other devices run Google only so I can preserve anything possibly lost when moving over. THAT is why I stress the importance of writing everything down, and why I don't shame people for still depending on Google. It is still hard to function without certain log-in information that I would have simply forgotten if I deleted everything. Certain tasks for my books need to be on certain platforms. Old emails, import employer information, I need that - not Google. So going through the progress of transferring will be a long, but fulfilling one. This too applies to apps. Currently, I have 25 apps that I either sideloaded or bought from Aurora Store. All of these apps are alternatives from r/Piracy or here. I have FOSS apps, I have ESET, I have banking apps that use my proton email. My paypal app barely works because of me disabling Google, but it opens (half of the time!) The point is, you are supposed to disguise yourself online, and that extends to your personal life. If you want to be public, go ahead, but people and corporations are weirdos and I don't suggest hiding for them - but hiding for your own sake. Across all my devices, I have no social media apps besides Discord. Discord is what I use for communities strictly, and I have not updated it in a WHILE. A big thing you can do is stop relying on updates from apps that do not need them to still function. My current app list is: Aurora Store, Foss calculator, Foss camera, Chomp SMS, ColorNote, Foss contacts, Crystal for Samsung Internet, Discord, Dolphin, ESET Mobile Security, Feeder, Foss files, Foss gallery, Organic Maps, PayPal, Foss phone, Proton Pass and VPN, Cracked ReadEra, Spacehey Mobile, Uber, Foss voice recorder. For me to live, I do need Uber and Paypal. As apps? Paypal is here because I didn't want to keep opening my browser (that zooms too much) for my banking apps, which is what I do with Wells Fargo and Cashapp. Uber needs to be an app, for some reason, and I also need to get around when I can. As for Samsung Internet, the interface is better than any other browser besides Dolphin. I use Dolphin exclusively to have Invidious as a replacement for Youtube. I open it up and it stays on the page last exited. It's the only reason I have it, but if I were to compare, Samsung Internet wins. SECTION THREE: The Design of Before I know there are instincts within the body to perform minimalism as the first step to becoming "dumber," but I propose a better idea. Your Developer Settings + ADW launcher. My phone has been made anew with the ADW launcher. I tried minimalism and I didn't work for me, I want the 2000s and 2010s, not the 90s. My goal is not to return, it is to live, and in order for me to live in that period, I need to function in that way. So, say hello to ADW launcher. I suggest other launchers like Nova if this one does not work for you, but for me, its the best. Other design choices you can make depends on the phone. My midphone is a base Motorola 2023 5g. This base offers customization (not better than Samsung but...) in color, font, size, and much more. It runs android 14, Has ESET Security in its accessibility, etc. I bold my text, keep my font size small, and put my text in high contrast mode. In the dock, I have my phone, camera, and sms, with no button to access my other apps because i dont put them on the home screen. on my home screen, i have the weather and the internet search bar. I use DuckDuckGo while turning off all AI and tracking and ads. I use strict anti-tracking with an ad blocker on my browsers. I use my browser for everything now. Banking, the news (RSS feed from Reddit), downloading files and music and apps, and I make sure to track how long im on it too so I can reduce that amount and instead do other productive things. Internet browser quick access has more reading, specifically for webcomics and manga and my emails. I make sure not to add anything distracting, I have to manually look them up. And on my computer, my home page immediately shows the Ytoo/org page, which sets me back years! Just recently, I was using the JS Paint tool like a little kid. No matter what they say, minimalism just isn't enough for me and others. There must be color, there must be this pop, this mixture between the functions of before and the growth of new web design. I want things to run and look like they function poorly on purpose, and in this case, I am getting there! They do, and it doesn't bother me. It has taught me patience. I think others want something that looks "simple," but without the simple functions. They want something minimalistic without the minimalist function. I am a maximalist, I like the color, the swag, the pop, and the ability to have more things for more diverse functioning - not less things into one, all-seeing beast. It just won't work for me. The devices that I mentioned earlier are exactly for that. The tablet is for when I draw art and produce manuscripts. The Samsung galaxy S3 I have was my first phone in middle school that I dropped over and over again until the batter kept falling out, and now I use it to pirate all my music I download from Invidious I have a mini kids camera that I put an SD card in. I just bought a handheld console that reminds me of the DSi, that I still have in hot pink in the corner of my room. I have a CD and DVD player, I have a radio and clock, I don't use online journals I have a shelf of notebooks from since I was a kid, I have so many electronics because I don't want minimalism. SECTION FOUR: It's In Everything You Type I no longer use a qwerty keyboard on my phone. I use Traditional T9 instead. It's easy to learn and customize, and I haven't had anyone comment on it at all, really. The only setback you will get is finding the right symbols, the pace of your typing, and how you get around certain things like not having emojis if you don't want them. It's In Everything You Type is referring to your keyboard, how it stores data, how you input characters, and what the receiver does with such information. Do they collect it? Does the app have trackers in it? Does it allow you to encrypt or delete data? Aurora Store is pivotal in revealing this info, and allows you to run for trackers if it hasn't been. Not only does getting a T9 keyboard keep you fresh design-wise, but it stops you from constantly being on your phone. Since I got it, I found less time to scroll and type but more time to read physical books, get physical media, listen to music, draw, write on my computer, and physically draw myself away from my midphone. One big thing I have seen here is that people believe that dumbing down to a dumbphone will save them from their "addiction," but that isn't a fix. You can't product placement your way out of doomscrolling, you have to actively fill your time up with other hobbies. You can doomscroll live TV, as long as you are not bed-rotting if able, as long as you are functioning to the capacity that you comfortably can. The T9 keyboard helped me put down my phone. I don't want to type because I can't type important messages like emails, texts, and other semi-professional info without scrolling too far in the bar. Instead, I use my computer. I use my tablet. I use other devices, but that requires charging them and restricting their use to certain parts of the house so that I have to physically MOVE in order to use them. It forces me to get up and go around. That, is why I am maximalist as well. Even for Spacehey, a social media app, I barely text on there and instead like to read the blogs. I think there is this thing where people feel the need to be in the conversation a lot, especially on the go. My goal is not to watch the city burn but rather make sure I can help the fire be put out, but there is no water in my words. Action is a must. Stop typing, start reading. Stop typing, start drawing. Stop typing, start listening. Stop typing, start calling. Stop typing, start writing on paper. SECTION FIVE: So What, Midphone? Well, this is it. That was the guide. I genuinely wanted to get this off my chest, I've been writing this since 1:32 AM. In the end, it boils down to: make Google dysfunctional, sideload and take control of your data, collect everything they own from you and reclaim your information, make sure they can no longer get it in the first place, and make sure you aren't giving it to them. The dumbphone movement is much more than just using a dumphone, it begets the act of new avenues of functioning that you must walk if you want to actually keep yourself "dumb." It is not enough to spend money on a flip phone, you have to barely function in this current tech and unlearn the smart things you were taught to get used to. While I am not so sure how this translates over on another OS, I do think the midphone as I have presented it can be replicated by making your own OS or using Linux, almost skipping the first step entirely. One day, I hope the midphone can be something physically created into a dual-input phone for a new market of people who want something like this native to their device rather than customized. I’ve had my PayPal account for 15 years. I use it to collect the occasional payment for digital patterns I sell on Ravelry and to collect annual subscription fees for web hosting/design services through my graphic design business. Never had a problem until Friday. Received an email from PayPal saying that my account had been deactivated until I submitted verification information for myself and for the last three transactions on my account. I immediately submitted all of my ID info and receipts from PayPal and Ravelry for the (3) $3.00 downloads from the past month. Today, three days later, I get the decision that my account is now permanently closed for some violation that they will not elaborate on. I have no clue what is going on. They have money in my account that I cannot access and I have no idea how I am supposed to invoice my hosting clients that are coming up for renewal. Anyone else with a similar experience? I’m dumb founded as to what is going on. I assume it has something to do with the knitting pattern downloads from Ravelry, maybe someone complained to PayPal for a refund but none of the customers have reached out to me at all and the notice I received on Friday was the first time I was made aware of any issues at all. Still, if you’ve clicked on this thread, you probably have a good reason to read ALL of it, especially if you’re following the Night Vision Network situation as it’s developing here, on the NVG Facebook groups, and various forums. I sincerely hope it will be both helpful & informativel. First off, my Bona Fides: I run a small business consulting firm specializing in New Business Development, New Marketplace Entry, Digital Marketing, and Sales Force Management etc. My clients are mostly manufacturers & distributors in the specialty consumer products space. I have Master’s Degree in Business Admin and have held executive positions with very small businesses right up to NASDAQ traded companies. I like guns, I do a lot of shooting, and I like night vision. I have current & previous clients in the “2A” space. I’ve seen it all when it comes to specialty retail and NVG sales. “Great ..” you say, “So you’re a douchebag. Congrats. So what’s a BK DIVE and how does it relate to Night Vision Network?” A BK Dive, simply put, is when the owner(s) of a company decide they are going to strategically bankrupt their own business, and rip off absolutely anyone & everyone they can on the way. What most people don't understand is how often this happens, how little protection there is for consumers, and how tough it can be to get made whole if you’ve been the victim of one. In most States business can very easily file bankruptcy, owing massive amounts of money and gear, with virtually zero real liability attached to the actual owner(s). This relates to a legal concept referred to as “the Corporate Veil”. More on this later. Owners can collect payments for products they dont have in stock and have no intention of fulfilling, they can order and take delvery of products and components on credit from vendors (like NODS housings from say, AB Nightvision) with no intention of paying, They can run “sales” and promotions to get quick infusions of cash, and instead of shipping the products to the customers who paid for them, sell it out the back door for cash, if they haven’t already done so. While all this is happening, they drain the company bank accounts by paying out large sums to fictitious creditors or vendors (usually a girlfriend, family member, or, in many cases, bogus LLCs they themselves own) and ultimately collect all the funds themselves. That legal concept we mentioned earlier - The corporate veil is a legal concept that separates a company's legal identity and liabilities from its owners (shareholders or members). This separation allows owners to have limited personal liability, meaning their assets are generally protected from being used to pay the company's debts or settle lawsuits. That’s right, unless you can PROVE fraud, which is extremely difficult, once these characters have finally completely blown out their business … when no customer is foolish enough to send them any more money, no vendor or manufacturer foolish enough to sell them any more inventory, their partners & affiliates have all walked away, everything of value has been sold … and all the money has been safely routed away or converted into protected or insulated assets … then, the company files for Bankruptcy protection and in most cases, the OWNER CANNOT BE HELD LIABLE nor his PERSONAL ASSETS FORFEITED. Even if you manage to prove fraud, unless you can convince local law enforcement to prosecute, which they are often not inclined to do, the best you can hope for is a judgement against the individual which you will likely never collect on. That’s a BK DIVE. It takes a REAL piece of shit owner to perpetrate, and with changing BK laws it’s not nearly as common as it used to be, but is nevertheless still common and VERY destructive to those caught up in them. Let me be clear here - I do not say that NIGHT VISION NETWORK is in the early middle stages of a BK DIVE, you can make your own judgement about that. I will say they absolutely did defraud one of my clients out of $61,000.00. “HOW …” - you may well ask - “DO I KNOW IF I HAVE JUST BEEN VICTIMIZED BY A COMPANY IN THIS WAY? ARE THERE ANY WARNING SIGNS?” The answer to the first question is the easiest and the most important. There are certain tell-tale signs which nearly always indicate a company is preparing for, or engaged in, a BK DIVE: Customers will begin complaining publicly (on Reddit, on related FB groups or forums) about having paid and been or being strung along for long periods Vendors and providers will distance themselves from the company in ways you can see, like removing the company from their list of authorized dealers, refusing to comment or pointing out alternatives if you contact them with questions or worries about receiving their products from the dealer Seemingly entirely legitimate businesses will encourage you to use PayPal, Venmo, Cashapp, or paper check, as opposed to a credit card** Companies that do NOT charge a credit card processing fee but DO insist on you paying the fee for PayPal G&S, or discourage G&S entirely. (PayPal G&S fee is roughly the same as most payment processing companies’ CC fee, so they should not charge one if they do not charge for the other) Products listed as “In Stock” don’t ship out promptly, and while the owner or “customer service” may at first seem responsive and helpful, no concrete resolution will manifest within 10 business days Sometimes, the company will advise you of an unexpected lead time of a few weeks AFTER payment has been made, citing any variety of reasons. They may even offer a slight discount for your continued patience, but ultimately, the products will not ship Customers will not immediately receive a receipt or order confirmation in their email Communications, explanations & excuses to many different customers will begin to all look and sound eerily similar; very short, lacking details, and rife with “sincere apologies” If they accept payment via credit card, they will ask to do a “manual entry” over the phone rather than send you a secure payment link or provide a normal online checkout process They will continue to perform any of the above maneuvers with later customers, while having entirely ceased communications with earlier customers. They may even threaten legal action against anyone who complains publicly or accuses them of wrongdoing. Don’t be fooled. Nothing will come of it, and you can throw that CEASE & DESIST right in the trash. All of these behaviors denote someone trying to prolong the period of time they can collect cash without delivering anything. You may say, “These are warning signs, these are symptoms, by the time I see most of these, it’s probably too late!” Sadly, that’s probably true … but you may be able to help others by posting publicly about what you’ve experienced. In any case, if you’re getting ready to drop six or ten grand on NODS, these are things you should be educated about ahead of time … you should also read the “Unpleasant Facts” section at the end, too!) The answer to the second question is not so easy, and any answer I can give you is by nature conjecture and incomplete; this whole post is designed to warn you off from companies that have already begun a BK DIVE, prevent you from wasting time if you already have, and encourage you to spread the word and help others if you think you’ve been caught in a BK Dive. If you think you’ve been caught in a BK DIVE web, you should: Immediately communicate to the dealer that you are contacting both local law enforcement, small claims court, and a local attorney if a full refund is not issued to you within 24 hours. DO NOT accept promises to complete the original order. Refund or nothing. Ask them for contact information for their Corporate Counsel or company lawyer. DO NOT be drawn into promises to make good if you will just delay for a short while. Do not respond to anything they say. You’re simply communicating your intentions. Set up a Google Drive or Dropbox. Convert every email, every screenshot, every text message, and the detailed history of every phone call back and forth into a PDF document and save it with the format, type, and date created in the file name. Optional, but still a good idea, is to type up a simple timeline with just the dates and the facts. Contact any person you see on Reddit or other forums complaining of similar issues and share information. Call the Non-Emergency number for either the Police Dept for the city the company is physically located in, or the County Sheriff … or better yet BOTH, and demand to file a police report for FRAUD. Be insistent … they will often consider this a hassle and may not be too eager to help. If you do not get help quickly, demand to speak to a Desk Sergeant. As a last resort, call the office of the County District Attorney (or Prosecutor). Make sure you email EVERYTHING you have collected in your DRIVE or DROPBOX related to the case. Insist that it all be made part of the report file. Ask if, in the jurisdiction, the OWNER of the company is liable, or only the COMPANY. Ask if you can press criminal charges and how to proceed. Contact the City or County Small Claims court and ask if you have a case. If they say you do, ask for a recommendation for a local attorney to help you with the small claims case. If you do file suit, notify the police to amend your original police report. Once you have a small claims court docket number AND a police report, get back in touch with the company. Again, offer them 24 hours to refund you. It probably won't work, but it’s worth the effort to be the squeaky wheel. File your small claims, press your charges, and spread the word on the internet. You have a DUTY and an OBLIGATION to others to make a minimum effort to prevent others from suffering as you have. That is, of course, unless you’re a piece of shit scumbag yourself! It’s important you understand, even if you do all of the above, it’s doubtful you will ever see your money back. It is absolutely GUARANTEED you will never see the items you paid for… but you may ultimately get SOME restitution, or see the perpetrator jailed. The best thing you can do if you feel like you may be caught up in something like this is to follow the advice I have laid out above. If you have an attorney, get with them.
