I bought a CD player to get back some of that 2000’s joy, but it was a bit of a waste of money because I won’t be stopping my music subscriptions on my phone. So I didn’t want to waste any more money on a bag but whipped one up in an evening so now I can walk around with it! I freehanded it but it was so simple like nothing too complicated at all, gave it a front pocket for an extra cd or batteries or earphones! So happy with it and wanted to show it off a a bit. I'm looking for a NEW CD player in 2026. I've been trying to research this for a few weeks and I'm not coming up with a clear cut winner. Every player seems to have it's quirks until you're spending $700+ on a top of the line audiophile player. I'm just looking for something reliable, a good sounding built in DAC, truly gapless, and reasonably priced. Every model that I come across seems to have mixed reviews. Some people saying a player is fantastic and lasted them months/years with no issues, and others saying the same player stopped reading discs after 5 months. Brands like Fiio and SMSL seem to get recommended a lot in the sub $200 range, but then if you read more they seemingly have a lot of quality control issues and terrible customer service. People say not to buy a slot loader, but then complain something like the Yamaha CD-S303's tray is flimsy and loads the CD incredibly slow. There's NAD players at around $400, but then people say well these used to be good and now they're junk. I've seen the Cambridge AXC35 get recommended, and then people say it doesn't reliably read discs long term. The Onkyo DXC-390 seems reasonably priced, but then people say CD Changers are no good because they break or have too many moving parts. I can keep going with the players I've looked into but I feel like I'm taking crazy pills over here. Nothing seems to check all of the boxes to just be a good reliable player. Also, not trying to sound rude but please do not recommend I go buy a $10 dollar DVD player and a DAC. I'm not interested in doing this. Thrift stores around here are barren and completely picked over, and everything on FB marketplace is junk or old/overpriced. Long winded post here, so thank you for reading... I just can't seem to find a well priced, reliable CD player that isn't wildly overpriced. Any insight/recommendation would be much appreciated. Thanks EDIT What did I end up buying? Basically after combing through more suggestions and doing even more research I landed between the NAD C538, Cambridge ACX35, and Marantz CD6007. I chose these few models because of their build quality and vibration suprression, their ability to read discs - scratched and long term, gapless playback, and the DAC / Sound Quality and extra features of each. The NAD C538 specifically seemed to have good reception about its ability to read discs both scratched and long term. It uses a Wolfson DAC so at $399, it's a nice product. It's simple and it does what it's supposed to do. The tray for loading CD's looked much more stable than the Yamaha CD-S303 and the DAC quality seemed better in the NAD with Wolfson rather than Yamaha's in house DAC. The Cambridge AXC35 gets praised for it's simplicity, design, and it's DAC. This also uses a Wolfson DAC and is likely the same if not very similar to the NAD's Wolfson DAC. The only real knock to this player is there is no toslink out and there is no support for USB files in. I very much considered the Cambridge and the NAD to be a near coinflip in quality based on the research I was able to find. The price difference was almost negligible and the quality was near identical. Ultimately, however... I ended up buying... The Marantz CD6007. I bit the bullet and paid more than what I wanted to. This unit seemed to have the most consistent reception to reading discs long term and being very quiet in operation. Build quality was also raved about. The sound coming from the DAC did get better reviews compared to the Wolfson used in the Cambridge and NAD. Ultimately, I genuinely believe I might not even be able to tell the difference between the Marantz and either other player if you blindfolded me. CD's play like CD's. That said, I did want, and will use the headphone DAC that comes with the Marantz, so any extra sound quality essentially comes for free as I would have purchased an external headphone DAC eventually. I ultimately looked at the Marantz as a high quality life long purchase that I'll probably never upgrade or replace so it's worth a bit of a premium now. That said, honestly... If I did buy the NAD or the Cambridge, I'd probably be just as happy with it as the Marantz. I’m trying to buy my girlfriend a CD player as a birthday gift. I considered buying a portable player but Id prefer it has its own built in speakers since she doesn’t have any. I’d also like for it to be able to connect to her car so she gets to use her CDs more. If you have any recommendations for anything that can play CDs i’d really appreciate it. I’m having trouble finding good recommendations on google and youtube. Oh and if there’s other subs that could help me I’d appreciate knowing that too. Edit: Okay I understand now that what I originally asked for doesn’t exist. My bad I didn’t know those were mutually exclusive features. I’m so glad to be giving physical media and single-purpose devices another chance. I’ve been meaning to do it for at least the past two years. After going back to analog thinking (paper) and seeing the difference, this was the obvious next move. I’ve also loving the journey of hunting for and collecting old CDs, and discovering new artists via Bandcamp and Qobuz. I’ve already burned a few CDs with new music, in addition to my thrift finds. So no bashing. Just my point of view as CD-players are rarely in scope here. It seems turntables and streamers have taken the lead. And that's completely ok! But I am completely back from streaming and got a bunch of classic cd-players. And this B&O CD 4500 from 1987 is my favourite. How does it sound you asking. GREAT! It has this famous TDA1541 DAC for the warmer moments of listening life and a digital output for any modern crisp&clear DAC. How does it look and feel? AWESOME! Just look at this design-icon with that power-driven aluminium-lid. The glas-touch-panel. It just gives me an emotion playing an album no streaming device could. It's great that an article about a CD player is the top story on NYT Wirecutter. I don't agree with the author's claim that "Only a year ago, I would’ve positioned CDs alongside phone books, slide projectors, and wine coolers as items I’d never expected to reenter popular discourse".
