I’m having trouble with Bluetooth on my cd player
So I got the cheap ass Bluetooth cd player off of Amazon. It’s important for me to budget so I really don’t want to hear it about some audiophile saying “well you should have bought this thousands of dollars cd player from 1812.” It’s the envycloud KC-918 on Amazon. Anyways it works well in every way but I tried connecting Bluetooth with my AirPods 4 and it connected but it played no audio. It kept playing and moved to track 2 as well. I had the wired earbuds disconnected as well. If anyone has had this kind of issue please let me know how you fixed it. Even if it’s with a different kind of cd player. submitted by /u/PorterBridged to r/Cd_collectors [link] [comments]

Need a small cd player with decent sound.
Title says it all. Need a smaller boombox or anything similar. I'm pressed for space, so a set of speakers is out of the question, unless its a Bluetooth speaker, or a single small speaker. I work at a car dealership and sometimes we take in a trade that hits me with sadness and nostalgia
This is a 2001 Chevrolet Venture with only 77,000 miles. One owner its entire life, an elderly man who kept it after his wife passed away and his children went out on their own. Him and his wife purchased it in 2000 from a dealership just 10 miles away, 26 years ago. Seeing this thing sent a rush of emotion through me that I didn't expect. My parents bought a 1999 Toyota Sienna when I was in 5th grade and my sister was in 1st grade. It was very much like this van - super comfy cloth seats with that very-90s pattern to them, a CD player, an actual key to start the engine, cruise control, a rear bench seat, and that's about it. No Bluetooth, no screens, no Apple Carplay. No cell phones.....you just enjoyed the road trips as a family, with one another, *engaged* in the journey. My dad used to have a giant Rand McNally Road Atlas and he & I would highlight the roads we took and put dots on the places we stopped. It was a simpler time but it was truly the best of times. Technology is inevitable, we can't avoid it, but sometimes I yearn for true disconnection, surrounded by the people I love, and that Toyota gave me that when I was growing up. My parents are aging now, and divorced, and life just seems more difficult than it used to be. I don't have a family of my own yet (working on that) and sometimes I'd give anything to go back to the third row of that minivan, a CD in my clear blue Sony Walkman, staring out the window with a child's sense of magic and wonder - if only for a minute or so. submitted by /u/Snoo96701 to r/Millennials [link] [comments]

Can anyone comment on these Chinese CD players that have RCA, balanced, fiber and coax outputs! Can interface with a surround sound unit and can play 'DTS-CD, DSD and FLAC'! Rediscovering Music with This Amazing CD Player
Spent the last few days pairing the FiiO - DM15 R2R with Headphone Zone x Juzear Defiant the and honestly… this combo surprised me more than I expected. The DM15 R2R is not just another nostalgic CD player. The moment you hit play, you immediately notice that warm, smooth, almost analog-like presentation that R2R DACs are known for. Vocals sound dense and emotional, instruments have proper weight, and there’s this relaxed, fatigue-free presentation that makes you want to keep listening for hours. What impressed me most is how musical this thing sounds. It doesn’t try to sound ultra-clinical or hyper-detailed. Instead, it focuses on texture, note weight, and natural timbre. Acoustic tracks, old Bollywood CDs, jazz, soft rock, and vocal-heavy music sound absolutely beautiful on this setup. The bass has a rounded analog character while the treble stays smooth and non-fatiguing. Now coming to the Defiant — this IEM matches the DM15’s personality surprisingly well. The Defiant already has an engaging and energetic tuning, but paired with the DM15 R2R, it gains a richer midrange and smoother top-end response. The result is a presentation that feels immersive without becoming harsh. Female vocals sound intimate, guitars carry nice body, and drums have satisfying impact without sounding bloated. What I really liked: • Warm and natural tonality • Extremely addictive vocal presentation • Smooth treble with zero listening fatigue • Powerful enough to drive the Defiant effortlessly • Physical CDs somehow make the experience feel more intentional and enjoyable again • The transparent lid and premium aluminum build make the DM15 feel special every time you use it Of course, it’s not perfect. If you prefer ultra-analytical or bright tuning, this may feel too smooth for you. Some users have also reported Bluetooth quirks and QC issues like hiss/coil noise, though thankfully I didn’t personally face major issues. But overall? This combo genuinely reminded me why I fell in love with audio gear in the first place. In a world full of streaming and “skip culture,” sitting down with CDs and just enjoying albums from start to finish feels refreshing again. The DM15 R2R + Defiant pairing is pure musical enjoyment over technical show-off tuning — and honestly, I’m here for it. submitted by /u/Ok-Raisin-9556 to r/iemlndia [link] [comments]

She is only 3 years younger than me.
We tend to forget how FAST technology was changing back in the day and I think that is why our experiences as a generation are so divided compared to previous generations. My car stereo(with theft protection faceplate). Had a tape deck, cd player AND aux port. That I originally connected to a palm pilot, then to an MP3 player, then an IPad, then my phone. Meanwhile my wife had some CDs before straight to Bluetooth. I grew up on newgrounds? My wife started on YouTube. I joined Facebook when it was EDU only, my wife joined after that limit was removed. And thats before factoring in that things actually took a longer time to reach certain areas. You could literally have multi-year lag on trends, tech, etc being available. Crazy times. Edit: it’s not about her not knowing the specific term. It’s about the fact that she didn’t even know what I was referring to when I said AUX. Even in just the three year difference, so many things had been streamlined to the point where learning HOW to make things work was not required. submitted by /u/SandiegoJack to r/Millennials [link] [comments]

Turntable with CD Player
My dad wants to buy a system to play his records and CDs. He’s not an audiophile and wouldn’t necessarily need a super high-end set up, however probably wouldn’t want the speakers to sound like total garbage. I know he could probably get 2 systems, 1 for records and 1 for CDs, but space is an issue and I think he would enjoy the novelty and ease of having it all in-built. I’m looking at the Audio-Technica LP60X with CD/Radio/Bluetooth. It comes with external speakers, so I’m assuming they would be at least a bit better than internal ones, and would have the option to upgrade them if needs be? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Help with finding a new cd player
I am struggling to find recommendations for a new, cheap cd player that fits my specifications. Everywhere I look people say get a second-hand one but I specifically want a new one with a warranty so that I can return it if it does not work or has issues as I have had trouble with tech in the past, especially second-hand tech. Because of this experience I specifically want something new. I also want something with a warranty, ideally at least 2 years warranty in case of any issues. I am not comfortable buying without warranty. I have difficulties with learning new technology (disabilities) so I want something simple and straightforward. I can handle a remote or buttons on the player, but not a complicated set up process involving other tech. Think something you'd get for an elderly relative. I have seen some people on reddit posts say to people that they want a boombox not a cd player. I want something that plays CDs if boombox is what it's called then a boombox is fine as long as it plays CDs. It only needs to play CDs. My budget is £50, though I could go up to £70 maximum if it is absolutely perfect and is pink. It needs to be something I can order online easily ideally amazon, or a technology store like currys or something which is trustworthy. I want a pink one if possible. I don't care about audio quality as long as it plays music. I know people here will probably value audio quality but the purpose for me is not audio quality, it is background noise so I can focus. As long as it plays my songs and I can recognise the song playing then it is perfect for me. I would rather loud than quiet - it needs to block out or minimise a low-regular level of neighbour noise. I don't want an external speaker I'm looking for an all-in-one that can sit on a bedside table. I will only be using it at home so I don't need anything portable. On argos and amazon a lot of reviews for cheap cd players are bad and say it doesn't work, it ruins the CD, or they couldn't return it. I want to get one I can definitely return if there are issues that wont ruin my cds as they are sentimental and precious. Because they are sentimental I am stressed and want to make as sure as possible it wont ruin my cds. Ideally I want something that will last for 5 years minimum, but I know going for cheap means it could flake out after a year or two (this is just ideally). Something basic and sturdy because £50-£70 is a significant purchase for me. It needs to plug into a plug socket and be wired. Would rather not deal with batteries/changeover as I will be using it all the time and will burn through batteries quickly. I will use it every day so anything battery runs out fast. I do not want any bluetooth. I do not want wireless. I do not want something I have to plug into a laptop or connect to a phone or use an app to get it to work. I especially don't want something I have to mess with every ten mins or half an hour. I want to put a CD in and leave it and it will play to completion, ideally loop round to the start and keep playing. One of the players I looked at would go to standby after 15 minutes. That would not work for me and would make me frustrated I have to mess with it lots. I want music in the background while I focus on things if it keeps stopping it will distract me and make me frustrated. No standby mode that automatically turns it off or stops the music. No automatic time out. If it stops at end of CD thats ok but if it stops after a few songs it would not work. I am trying to reduce my screen usage (part of the reason I want to use CDs over my phone to play music) and so if I need to load up a laptop or game console or my phone to use it then that defeats the purpose of it. I do not have a tv in the room it is for and don't have room for a tv, so it needs to plug into a plug socket, not a tv or other system like a ps4. A hard rule is no app I need to use to get it to work. My house has notoriously terrible wifi and connectivity due to the area so all tech that relies on wireless connection has real issues working in my house. This makes getting anything like that working extremely frustrating and very flaky. Because of this radio doesn't work either so it can have radio function but I won't be using it (as it won't work in my area). I also struggle with apps specifically due to disabilites with learning to use them. I struggle to learn how to navigate them and the moment they update or the interface changes even slightly (even the font changes)I have to re-learn from scratch. Apps are an absolute no-no for this reason and very stressful for me. Visually I like the look of 90s and early 00s cd players, an oval shape or a big blocky cube or rectangle shape. Ideally I want a nice colour if possible. Ideally it would be pink, have decent reviews, be returnable if it does not work or has issues, plug into a plug socket, play cds, and work without any bells and whistles. It can be average or poor audio quality as long as it won't damage the CDs. I just need noise in the background. It can be a kids model I'm not really bothered as long as it works and works consistently. I am UK based so it must ship to the UK. Ideally something off of Amazon. I am asking here as I got overwhelmed by all of the options on Amazon and was struggling to find anything that ticked all the boxes, and kept finding contradictions between what it said in the description versus what the actual specs said. Also reviews kept bringing up apps and bluetooth when it had no mention of either in the description. Amazon links would be very helpful, or specific model names. I struggle with specific jargon and know absolutely nothing about cd players so i may not be able to answer more technical questions. I know there are different CD types from other reddit posts but i dont know what types my CDs are and have a big collection so something that will work for any CD would be ideal. Thank you for any advice you can offer me xx UPDATE Thank you everyone for your recommendations! I've ordered one which is on its way xx submitted by /u/CelestialPeryton to r/BudgetAudiophile [link] [comments]

Radio with both Carplay and CD Player for Suzuki SX4?
This is my car (well, mainly my mother's, since it's hers), a 2010 Suzuki SX4. I'd like to know if any of you know of a car radio for this model that has both CarPlay or Bluetooth and a CD player. I've seen many radios for this car online, but all of the ones with CarPlay don't have a CD player. Even though CDs are an outdated technology and hardly used anymore, my mother still uses them and needs the CD player. Does anyone know of a good portable, bluetooth CD player or something similar?
I don't care if it's impractical. I've recently switched from a smartphone to a flip phone, at least for the time being, and would like to actually put my CD collection to use with a portable CD player. However, I'd really like there to be bluetooth capabilities for when I go to the gym or am doing something active. Does anyone have any recommendations? Raise your hand if you had an undercabinet-mounted kitchen radio with a CD player and a clock
Our undercabinet-mount Bose CD player/clock/radio is failing in the CD Player department. Looking around online, it's obvious the kids don't play CDs. Or listen to terrestrial FM radio for their news. Everything is available on their phone. Should we rip our CDs to a media server, switch to streaming internet radio, buy an independent clock, and double-sided tape a Bluetooth speaker to the underside of our cabinet? submitted by /u/drsoftware to r/GenX [link] [comments]

New car (2023 Chevy Bolt) didn't come with a CD player.
Our new car has no CD player, but I wanted one. No problem, right? Connect one to the aux input. General Motors being General Motors, there is no aux input anymore. Bluetooth transmitter? The car won't pair because it's not a phone and it can't see the pairing code. This is what I came up with. The final form The final form, outside the car Version 1, using a dedicated Bluetooth transmitter, powered with a 12v to 5v converter off of the radio's Accessory wire. My cousin gave me a spare head unit for this project. It has a CD player and line output. After the Bluetooth transmitter didn't work (I hate GM), I decided to run the signal through an actual phone to get it into the car. I had a really old Android phone that I had removed the battery from and hardwired to 5v for a project years ago. I was able to run that off a 12v to 5v converter, connected to the cigarette lighter plug that also powers the head unit. To get the signal into the phone, yes, that is a composite video capture card. They're crap for video, but not too bad for audio, and it's what I had. I stuffed it all into the center console with some dense foam glued/wedged around it to prevent it rattling around. CD skipping is surprisingly not an issue, I shook the head unit quite hard while playing music and it didn't skip at all. When I start the car, I have to power on the phone, wait for it to boot up, and pair it to the car. The car doesn't always like that the phone powers up after it does. I recently sat in my driveway for a good 5 minutes trying to get it to pair, before giving up and plugging in my phone to Android Auto so I could get on my way to work. So it does need some improvement, but it's a start. Also, there are some issues with audio interference, that I think I can fix with a ground loop isolator. Anyway, I'm very happy about this project. I will not be forced into perpetual subscriptions, and if this is what it takes, I'll do it. I understand modern cars not coming with CD players, but an aux input? That's almost as important as functional brake lights, which this car is also lacking. Did I mention I don't like General Motors? submitted by /u/LightingGuyCalvin to r/techsupportmacgyver [link] [comments]

The switch from CD player to Bluetooth is the worst "upgrade" ever put into cars.
Using your phone for Bluetooth in the car is infinitely worse from a function and safety standpoint. When I want to change the album or band when using Bluetooth I have to either fumble with my phone while driving or use voice commands and hope Bixby/Siri both pops up and also can understand what I'm asking her to play. I need to have my phone available, and with my internet on just to switch a song handsfree. Impossible in a car everyone is talking in. You are locked in to paying for subscription music services for the rest of your life, have to make sure your phone is charged or plugged in, forced to either have internet connection or all your music downloaded. The only real benefit is you can play any song you want without owning the CD, but that isn't an advantage when Siri doesn't understand what you’re saying and you’re going 80 on the highway so you can't use your phone. When I want to change the album or band on my CD player I just press any of my 6 buttons to change the album. I'm currently in need of a new car and turning down every option presented to me because they all have screens and single CD players and it's bullshit and ugly. submitted by /u/Bandito21Dema to r/The10thDentist [link] [comments]

Mood Spoiler: Reminds you that there is so much beauty in the world, and of the power of music Original Post: August 7, 2012 I've never understood it. My whole life I've seen hearing people make a fool of themselves singing their favorite song or gyrating on the dance floor. I've also seen hearing people moved to tears by a single song. That was the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around. I was born profoundly deaf and all music sounded like trash through my hearing aids. That is until a couple days ago when I put on a new pair of hearing aids for the first time in years. The first thing I heard was my shoe scraping across the carpet; it startled me. I have never heard that before and out of ignorance, I assumed it was too quiet for anyone to hear. I sat in the doctor's office frozen as a cacophony of sounds attacked me. The whir of the computer, the hum of the AC, the clacking of the keyboard, and when my best friend walked in I couldn't believe that he had a slight rasp to his voice. He joked that it was time to cut back on the cigarettes. That night, a group of close friends jump-started my musical education by playing Mozart, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Elvis, and several other popular legends of music. Being able to hear the music for the first time ever was unreal. I realized that my old hearing aids were giving me a distorted version of music. they were not capable of distributing higher frequencies with clarity, instead it was just garbled gibberish. When Mozart's Lacrimosa came on, I was blown away by the beauty of it. At one point of the song, it sounded like angels singing and I suddenly realized that this was the first time I was able to appreciate music. Tears rolled down my face and I tried to hide it. But when I looked over I saw that there wasn't a dry eye in the car. I finally understood the power of music. Obviously, I did the only sensible thing and went on a binge of music. Below are my top 5 favorites from my limited exposure to the world of sound. Mozart's Lacrimsoa The soundtrack to Eleven Eleven… I can see how this comes off as narcissistic, it being my own film and all but it's such a personal work that when I listened to it for the first time I broke down. I felt like I was truly seeing the film for the first time ever. I'm grateful that Cazz was able to capture the tone perfectly. We discussed the film and specific scenes with essay-sized reasoning/deliberations on what should be conveyed. The critical response to the film surprised me and I still didn't quite get it until seeing the visual images coupled with the soundtrack. (Editor's note- I did some digging and here is a link to the imdb page of the short film.) Sig Ros's Staralfur IL Postino-Luis Bacalov Minnesota's A Bad Place Ironically enough, I'm turning my hearing aids off more often than before because most sounds are even more annoying and the only times I have it on is when talking to people or listening to music/birds. Silence is still my favorite sound. When I turn my aids off my thoughts become more clear and it's absolutely peaceful. I hope that one day hearing people get the opportunity to experience utter silence. What exactly changed between my old hearing aids and my new ones? My previous hearing aids were only 4 years old but technology has gotten cheaper and better at an exponential rate since then. Before, I could almost hear the low frequencies at a hearing person’s level, but not as crisp... higher notes on the other hand, I didn’t hear at all. I never realized how little of a range my hearing aids picked up compared to hearing people until a telecommunications class in college. We were learning about radio equipment and the guest professor told us about how high human ears can hear and also compared to various animals. He turned around and turned the dial down to the lower pitches. I could still hear nearly all the low frequencies like rest of the class. When he turned the dial in the opposite direction, I blanked out at about 40% and the rest of the class stopped between 90-100%. It’s an odd feeling learning something so profound about yourself at twenty one... But it’s not as odd as the things I can hear now. It was during Lacrimosa that I realized I was truly hearing pitches I’ve never experienced before. It was like seeing a color I’ve never seen before. I honestly never thought I would really be able to hear my own soundtracks because I have accepted my deafness, I have always been and still am grateful for all I've been blessed with so it was never a big deal to me. Now... I'm overwhelmed and beyond grateful. But this is just the beginning. That’s why I’m asking you to give me the name of the most beautiful songs to you. I’ve posted the question on reddit and will listen to the top 30 upvotes and then post my top 5 from that batch. Original post over at http://www.artofthestory.com/being-able-to-hear-music-for-the-first-time-ever/ Update (Same Post) UPDATE: Wow... Just wow. 14 thousand comments and counting. I'm humbled and grateful for every one of the comments, upvotes and the endless amounts of music suggestions. Currently the most upvoted comment isn't a song suggestion but rather a suggestion to listen to the music from the beginnings of its orgins. Here's the original comment below as submitted by GiraffeKiller- "This is like introducing an Alien to the music of Earth. I wouldn't know where to start. Once you're through your kick on Classical, I might start with music from the 50's and progress through each decade. You can really see the growth of modern music like that." I think it's a wonderful idea, and will be blogging about my journey into the world of music. As many of you have pointed out; music didn't start in the 50's, so I'm going to start with the earliest written form of music… I'm going to start with Guillaume de Machaut's Agnus Dei. (Composed sometime between 1313 and 1365) I am still posting my top 5 next week... It will be a difficult task considering all the submissions. This week I am going to re-watch my favorite film of all time, Baraka. This will be my first time being able to hear the soundtrack of the film. I will be posting about that as well. Also for all of those asking- the hearing aids I got is the Phonak Naida S Premium. Again, thank you for all the kind words and shares! Even if you’re not hearing music for the first time ever, I suggest looking through the suggestions and expanding your musical tastes. You never know how much more days you have left to hear.... Trust me on this one, you don’t want to miss out on a great song. Update Post: August 22, 2012 Title: Deaf update #1: My new top 10 favorite songs. The other day at work, my friend gave me a CD. It was ‘A Night at the Opera’ by Queen… I was so excited because this was the first time anyone ever gave me music. Also because Bohemian Rhapsody was the most suggested song from everyone. I was worried that the massive hype might ruin the experience for me but the first time I heard this song was surreal. I immediately had to listen to it again… and again. The first line is a question I’ve been asking myself lately. Is this the real life? On the same day, I got a message from the Daily Guru. He wanted to give me his new book, The Music Obsessive’s Guide To Life: Volume 1. It’s 954 pages of beautifully written essays. No, there are not any pictures except for the book cover. I read and listened to a couple of them, I’m already hooked. The next day I got an email from the staff of Spotify. They read my story and were inspired to give me an epic 13 hour playlist that covers everything from the chants of the early monks to Lady Gaga. Spotify also gave me a 6 month premium membership. I don’t have the slightest clue how to express my gratitude to everyone. A simple ‘thank you’ almost sounds insulting considering the amount of music/education I’ve been given. For those of you curious, I’ve embedded the Spotify playlist below- (Editor's note: here is the link to the page using wayback machine.) Wayback archive I asked reddit for a couple of suggestions. I got over 14 thousand. Here are my favorites so far, the only major suggestions I chose to ignore is the Beatles. Before you shoot me, bear in mind that I’m saving them for a special occasion. Without further ado, here’s my list. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen link Beethoven’s Ninth Fly Me To the Moon by Frank Sinatra (link) One Million Lovers by The Growlers* First Breath After Coma by Explosions In The Sky (link) Three Little Birds by Bob Marley (link) Brain Damage by Pink Floyd (link) Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash (link) Length of Love by Interpol (link) Thriller by Michael Jackson (link) Below are all my favorites that were available on Spotify- Editor's note: I linked his exact suggestions next to each song above. (The ones he included.) The second most popular suggestion was the Beatles. I chose not to listen to them, I’m holding off for a special occasion. But I promise to blog about my experience hearing them. I’m not sure how many weeks it will take me but I’m working my way up from the roots of music, as early as the 1300′s and up to modern music. Yahoo did a great Q&A with me. Below are some extra questions I’ve been asked by family and friends. What could you not hear before that you can hear now? And I was seriously wondering if it became more difficult to understand english if you could hear it properly now. Before I could hear bass/midtones but not clearly. Now I can hear bass/midtones AND high pitches clearly. As for english, I never relied on what I heard, but rather lipreading. Now with my new aids, my brain is building a new language for the sounds I’m able to hear now but I’ve already had the new hearing aids take some of the guesswork out of lipreading. Before the use of any hearing aids, were you able to imagine music? So maybe come up with a rhythmic or repetitive beat or even a basic basic melody in your head? It’s almost unfathomable to “create” a sound with no prior knowledge of one and the concept of music that we are so accustomed to today is so evolved and complex that we’ve been trained since birth to digest it and understand it. So, despite never hearing what instruments or even “sounds” sounded like I was wondering you were at least able to come up with notes in your head that were not identical to each other, a basic melody basically. My concept of music was based off the bass I could feel. When watching films, I could almost ‘see’ the music based off the bass. It was an incomplete picture but it gave me enough to work off and all the films I created in my head had music in bass form. Before my new hearing aids, music was 2D to me. Most songs sounded ugly through the old aids because I only had part of the picture. Now with higher pitches music finally makes sense to me. Music is now 3D to me and I’m excited about using this new tool with my films. Describe your perception of beauty that came through music. Previously, your experiences with beauty were visual or other. You enjoyed the Lacrimosa, yes, but you also perceived what some would call beauty. Was beauty immediately recognizable and then relayed to emotions? I think beauty in its most fundamental form is a well composed story. It has inception and catharsis. Look at the most beautiful photographs, films, songs or dance. They all tell a story in some form. A dancer weaves across the room composing a visual expression of emotion. The ups and the downs of life. That’s what I’ve noticed with the beauty of songs. The most haunting songs take me on an emotional roller coaster through sadness, excitement, happiness, anger, hurt, and love. I’ve heard a healthy dose of pre-classical music in preparation for the next update. So if you have any suggestions let me know in the comments below. (only works of song composed BEFORE the 16th century) *One Million Lovers is not released yet. I listened to all the music from The Growlers because they’re personal friends of mine. This one song easily stood above all the rest. Update Post Number 2: September 8, 2012 (Wayback machine link) The journey has only gotten crazier. My virgin ears have been under assault by everything from harmonic operas to screaming metal. The spectrum of music is even larger than I could have ever imagined. I tried not to expose myself to music composed post-16th century, but music is everywhere. My first big DJ show was at Dim Mak. Moon Boots and Perseus tore the dance floor up with their music. Say what you want about electronic music- from my experience thus far, the electro genre is just like every other musical genre- 90% of it is a good reason to turn my hearing aids off and the other 10% is a blessing to be able to enjoy. When Moon Boots put on ‘Running From’ it was such a rapturous experience, outmatched only by the first time hearing music. I literally could not stop myself from dancing to the beat. Give yourself enough time to find that 10% in genres you have not really dug into. I’ve found great tunes in every genre so it surprises me that anyone would refuse to listen to a song simply because of the genre it’s associated with. Shortly after, going to the Dim Mak show, I went to my first live show at the Bardoot. I dragged my friends there because I wanted to hear Lucy Schwartz. I met her briefly a few months ago and she told me that she was a singer and I’ve always wondered what her voice sounded like. The picture she painted with her voice was haunting. People probably think I’m a crier now. I couldn’t help myself though. I don’t think I’ve cried in a more public place before. Another time I lost it was a few nights ago. I was in San Diego for my friend’s birthday and there was a man playing the sax on the street. My hearing aids beeped as I turned them higher. I was planning on walking past slowly to listen to as much as I could without looking like an ass because I had no change on me. The sax player called out to me as I was passing him. I told him that I loved what he was playing but all I had in my pocket was a credit card. “No problem at all! Come over here.” He looked like a nice guy so I walked over, hoping he wasn’t a serial killer. The sax player grabbed my hand and planted it on the edge of the sax. He started playing and I heard the wonderful notes again, only this time it was coupled with the rolling vibrations of bass. I felt every layer of music roll down my finger. The celestial moment was short-lived but its an experience that will forever be cemented within me. If you’re the sax player, thank you sir. And thank you to Lucy Schwartz, Perseus, and Moon Boots. Keep creating the beautiful music. I saw Amadeus for the first time last week (an amazing experience to say the least) and it helped me understand that pre 16th century music probably sounds boring for most people because music was still in its infancy. Music had not gotten the chance to evolve beyond simple notes until Mozart pushed the bar. Critics during Mozart’s period complained that his compositions had too many notes for the brain to process. However, for someone new to this world of sound, its a great primer. The simplicity of the notes makes pre 16th century music easier for me to grasp compared to the complex behemoth of modern music. One big surprise for me was my favorite in the batch, the song of Seikilos. It was composed somewhere between 100-200 AD and is considered the oldest completed song. There are older compositions but they only survived in fragments. My second favorite was the Missa Rex Seculorum… it’s exotic and exciting. This was one of the few that I went back to for repeat listening. My third favorite was the music of Greek antiquity, specifically the Ymnos Ti Nemesi. I don’t know what instruments are used here but the song brings a smile to my face when I hear it. Without further ado, here’s my playlist of my favorite pre-16th century music. Also I had the opportunity to do an interview for the Associated Press and the Atlantic. Check it out if you want more background information, and thank you to all the writers/bloggers out there. The next update will dive into classical music, my first music festival experience, and it will also be the release of my first short film I was able to help compose the soundtrack for… stay tuned! If you have suggestions for what to listen to from the classical era please let me know in the comments. Update Post Number 3: December 25, 2012 (Wayback machine Link) Title: Deaf update #3- From the Pacific to Arrowhead. I checked my phone again, hoping this time there would be a bar. Still no service. This was peculiar because I was in the middle of Newport Beach and knew that I should have service… I realized to my horror that I’ve seen this exact same scenario when I was in close proximity to Coachella earlier this year. The horde of smartphones being used by the festival attendees had vacuumed all service within a one mile radius. The timing couldn’t be better. I had just walked for over half an hour from my car because I didn’t want to pay for parking but now it looked like I would need to walk back and forth because I had my camera on me and no press pass. My friends shrugged and turned around back towards the car but I stopped them, ‘there’s one thing we haven’t tried.’ The deaf card. When all else fails, I fall back on my deaf card. Maybe I’m abusing my circumstances, but at the same time its a card that not everyone has. Deafness like everything else, has pros and cons so why not use the pros? I went back to the press booth and told them my story of hearing for the first time recently and how it would make my day to be able to photograph my first festival experience. The volunteer looked up, her almond eyes giving no hints. I prepared myself for the long walk back but then the press pass slid across the table. I was thrilled I wasn’t going to miss a hour of the show. I walked into my first music festival. There were three stages, all on a beach so I could feel the bass snake through the sand pebbles under my feet. I had to turn my hearing aids down almost all the way because the music was so loud. I’ve been squeezed in mobs of dancing people before but this time it became a whole different experience with the music guiding the frenzied movement we call dancing. I’ve always found wild dancing comical but here it became almost…. justified. At one point I couldn’t stop watching this small Asian man spin around with unnatural speed, if there wasn’t music blasting people would have thought he was experiencing a seizure of some sort. But his every move was on the beat and intangibly linked to the music. Dancing has become less comical and more of a natural thing to me, on the flip side- I’ve never understood why farting made people crack up. I’ve heard all kinds of farts with my old hearing aids but the first time I heard myself fart with the new hearing aids, my face went beet red despite being alone. I didn’t realize how loud passing gas is. Now I understand the humor behind the gas, it is devastatingly embarrassing for the culprit… especially in a quiet room where there’s no escaping blame. The dj sets I enjoyed the most were- Justin Miller, Bag Raiders, Perseus, Cassette, and Moon Boots. One common misconception is that I can suddenly understand all the lyrics. Instead of explaining I tell people to imagine someone born blind who gained the ability to see later in life… if you gave that blind person a book he would see it and all the words but would he understand? Absolutely not. The blind person needs to learn the English alphabet, the rules of grammar, and the meaning of every word. Learning to read is a long process and even more difficult later in life. That’s what I am going through right now. Every new word I hear, I must memorize how it sounded and associate it with the word itself. To make matters even more difficult, people all sound different. Some have higher voices, some have strange accents, and some don’t speak clearly. On top of that, I’m learning to separate sounds. Just as the eye focuses on one subject, I must learn to do the same with sounds. Right now, the more overlapping sounds, the more difficult it becomes. I’m training my brain everyday and am already making progress. Now with all of this in mind, it’s no surprise that Classical music is my favorite genre. In part because I can already appreciate it fully without the lyrics. For a blind person, Classical music would be a beautiful painting… All other music with lyrics would be better described as books with pictures, the blind person could enjoy the pictures right away without need to learn the english language. Here, I have no musical history or knowledge so Classical is a blessing. I can hear every note from the low to the high and see the full picture. I still enjoy music with lyrics if it’s good but don’t have a complete picture until I read the lyrics or improve my linguistic vocabulary. I listened to all of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and am almost done with Brahms. I am starting to see music as a powerful emotional brush. These master composers paint the most stunning works of art. Film, photography, paint, words and hands have always been able to weave unique stories and each medium differs from each other, neither better or worse. I think there are stories that fit in certain mediums better than others. Music has become a new form of storytelling that I’ve never had exposure to… even though its difficult for me to understand the lyrics, I’ve found joy in the roller coaster of melody and tone. Below is some of my favorite classical works I’ve heard over the past few months, enjoy! Editor's note- had to look them up individually, but here is a list of the first 15 on his webpage. I was able to find links to his exact recommendations down to the artist: Harvard (Classical Study Music) (link) Graduation Day (Classical Study Music) (link) Leopold (Classical Study Music) (link) Brandenberg Concerto #1 in F: Adagio (JS Bach) (link) Ein deutsches requiem: ihr habt nun traurigkeit (Brahms) (link) Double Concerto in A minor for violin, cello and orchestra (Brahms) (link) Concerto in D Major for violin and orchestra (Brahms) (link) Horn concerto number 4 in Eb major (Mozart) (link) Christmas Canon (Canon in D) Mistletoe Symphony (link) Grand Canyon (Relaxing piano music consort) (link) Xerxes, "Ombra mai fu" (Handel) (link) Claire de lune (Debussy) (link) Symphony Number 9 in E minor "New World Symphony" (Dvorak) (link) The Planets: Jupiter (Holst) (link) Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven) (link) I tried playing the guitar and piano but no combination I hammered out sounded good. My notes were chaotic and unorganized. As soon my friend’s fingers spidered across the chords, I experienced the birth of a true song. I would describe it as emotions splashed across a sound spectrum of mathematical purity and beauty. Someday I hope to be good enough to play one decent song rather than the wild garbled notes I produced on my first effort. My friend who has been showing me the ropes of the guitar also composed the soundtrack for our latest short. We shot this earlier this year, before I ever thought I’d be able to hear as well as I do now. If someone told me I would be working on the soundtrack I would have laughed. The first thing I did was build the soundtrack in my head based off fragments of my favorite sounds/songs and then described those sounds to Max (the guitar composer) he would play the sound back and forth until it matched up with what I had in my mind. We did this for over a month and then recorded the final track recently. Even if this short film isn’t well-received by others, the journey itself was worth it. I was learning something new about the world of music every time I met up with Max. Without further ado, here’s the short. (Editor- Link to the youtube video here) I finally got the opportunity to really binge on music because I got the coolest ‘headphones’ in the world. It’s simply a bluetooth device that streams music or phone calls from my iPhone or any other device directly into my hearing aids. That means my TV or computer or even video camera! I actually plugged the compilot into my tascam field recorder on a shoot last weekend and for the first time in my life I was able to monitor audio. It was surreal because it was a moment that I previously thought impossible. Another surreal aspect of it? I could not hear myself talk because the microphone was pointed straight ahead. My friend looked at me startled because I started screaming at them in a vain effort to hear myself… All other noise is blocked out, making this the most advanced noise canceling headphone in the world. A canon could go off right by my ears but I would only hear Mozart in full crisp detail. I started listening to an average of 5 hours of music a day. Another thing I didn’t expect is my continued reliance on silence. Most days I only turn my aids on when talking to people or listening to music. It’s no wonder humans created music, the world is filled with so many ugly and chaotic sounds. With our eyes we can close them, with our hands we can move away, but how does a hearing person escape sound? Run away to someplace quieter? Cover your ears until your hands tire? I know that hearing folks can tune out the background noise and I’ve started to learn how to do that myself but it’s a far cry from utter silence. To me, ‘tuning out’ is simply the difference of listening or not listening while complete silence leaves you alone with only your thoughts and provides clarity beyond words. Having my aids on for more than half an hour, even in a quiet room, drives me crazy. Every single movement I make is highlighted by my aids and I’d rather focus on the task at hand as opposed to processing the information of the sounds triggered by my typing fingers or squeaking leather chair. Water is the worst. Every time I flush, I turn my hearing aids off because the swirling and sloshing of water is one of the ugliest sounds to me. Other examples include traffic, squeaking hinge, overlapping chatter, or barking dogs. I crave silence or beautiful music… not noise. Music isn’t the only new blessing. Since getting my enhanced hearing aids, I’ve been able to converse with more strangers than before and with far less mistakes. This is a gift for the writer within me because I can dig deeper into the character of people and paint more accurate portrayals. It’s a miracle I’m able to hear all these new sounds and tones but it also reminded me of the miracle of deafness. I couldn’t imagine living without eyelids and don’t know how hearing people live without earlids. I’m grateful I have a button I can press to mute my world. I know I’ve been frustrated with my condition more times than I can count but with the bittersweet benefit of hindsight, I can’t believe I ever regretted being deaf even if just for a moment. I cannot imagine living without eyelids and the ability to choose not to see something, and being deaf gives me the ability that hearing people have to live without- “earlids” or the ability to choose not to hear. Einstein once said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” The next update takes place in NYC and covers the Blues era. Throw song suggestions in the comments if they are considered Blues music. Parents and Entitled Brother Who Cannot Handle Birthday Parties (+ other stories) LONG - Part 2 of 2
**I am NOT OP. Original post by u/Holden-Position-4 in r/entitledparents******* trigger warnings: violence, child abuse, self harm mood spoilers: frustrating Post 1 linked here Post 5: My spoiled brat brother has finally been allowed some privileges. And he hates them 19 Jul 2022 Since the family intervention, my parents have kept my brother in check. And they are doing ok in terms of making up for years of treating me like crap. They've even promised to host my next birthday, and have my favorite cake with my name on it. My brother did overhear this because my parents had him doing dishes in the kitchen, and he just stopped what he was doing and went right to his room. No fake crying, just a complete shutdown. He still glares at me from his window every time I leave when I come to visit. A little while ago my parents have allowed my brother some privileges for good behavior. Though to my brother they're basically the opposite of anything he'd like. My parents decided that he could have a little fun for good behavior. So my dad dug out his old N64 and Gameboy Color from the 90s. He still had most of his old games for both systems, and also had an old CRT TV to hook them up to. When they were offered to my brother, he just complained that they were old and boring. My dad just said he could suit himself then, and go back to reading. Took one night before my brother was begging to have the old 90s game systems. He used to have many game systems, a gaming PC, and even a gaming chair with bluetooth speakers on it. Now all he has is a folding chair or his bed to sit on when gaming. I came by for a visit around the time he first got the N64 because my parents wanted to have me over for dinner, and I got to see my brother in his room yelling at the old CRT TV while playing Mario 64. He really wasn't happy. Especially since he couldn't even go online to check for guides, walkthroughs, or cheat codes. For the Gameboy Color, I saw he had some Pokemon games, and at least one Donkey Kong. My dad has said that if my brother is extra good by the end of the summer, they'll upgrade him to a Gameboy Advance. My parents quickly realized though that the Gameboy Color would eat AA batteries, so my brother has to use a power cord for it now. And he does play it. Maybe because he used to have a phone in his hands playing app games so much. Because my brother likes cycling, but no longer owns a bike since our parents sold it, he was without an outlet to exercise. My dad found a used exercise bike on FB Marketplace and put it in my brother's room. He also got a used CD player mini boombox from somewhere the same day. So yeah, my brother just rides that exercise bike since he can't go outside unless it's to do chores. And he rides it AGGRESSIVELY! He tunes into whatever music gets him going, and then he rides that exercise bike hard. From the look on his face, I'd call it hate riding. Almost like what you'd expect to see on the face of a vindictive prison inmate exercising in their cell and waiting for the day they can get out and get revenge. I had mentioned this to my parents. And they have the same worries that I do. So my dad started burning CDs with my brother's favorite music that used to be on his gaming computer that they also sold. Each burned CD has ten songs. And he would get one for every week of good behavior. He's only gotten one so far since this started. Not because of bad behavior, but because not enough time has gone by for him to get more. I'm not sure if I'd call my brother's behavior good. He's just not really being bad. I don't hear him complaining out loud anymore most of the time. But I see it in his face. Especially when he glares at me from his window when I get on my minibike to go home. He definitely resents me. But it's not the same look he gives our parents when they aren't looking. He glares at them like they destroyed his life. But if I were to put it into words, he glares at me with envy. Like I have everything he wants. The look just seems to say "Just wait till I'm 18!". I remember having those same thoughts when I wanted to move the hell out after high school. But I made sure I had life plans with the help of my aunt when I moved out. But my brother doesn't know anything about how to do that. So he's probably still thinking of it in the simplest ways a kid usually would. Oh great! Now I'm sounding like a know-it-all! I have tried to talk with my brother. But he doesn't have much to say. I've been stopping by every few days to spend some time with him. We don't speak much because he's gotten very quiet. But he does seem to enjoy having someone to play with since our parents won't. He eagerly hands me a controller every time I'm there. We've mostly been playing racing games like Mario Kart on dad's old N64 in my brother's room. And he gets pretty aggressive while playing. He keeps swinging the controller around wildly with nearly every move he makes, and has even shoved me over a few times when he was losing. I've learned to brace my leg so he can't do that. He had a few light tantrums for losing, but is getting a little better. I've had some Gamefaqs walkthroughs and cheat codes of some of the games he's been playing on the old N64 printed out at the local library and put them in a binder for him. And that's made him be a little nicer to me. Our parents wanted to get some stuff for summer homeschooling for my brother. But I warned them that was probably not a good idea. He's already in an almost constant state of anger. And the goal is to mellow him out and make him more accepting life won't go his way like it used to anymore, not piss him off even more. My dad got angry with me about how he's the father and not me. And that sparked an argument where I reminded him of the things that went on over the past decade. All of the favoritism, all of how I was blamed for so much, even how I had to hide my money at my aunts house because they kept letting my brother try to steal it. I didn't outright say he's a bad parent. But it was heavily implied. He backed off and my mom told him I was right, and trying to force home summer schooling on my brother will not help. That made my dad shut down and he went to drink alone in the living room. My mom has apologized to me repeatedly over her past actions. She says she blames herself because it was her idea to coddle my brother so much, and my did just went along with it. She told me that back then she was never thinking ahead to what my brother would be like as an adult. She basically refused to admit he was going to grow up. So she just kept spoiling him to try and keep him her as baby. My parents have scheduled couple's counseling. But it's gonna be a while before they get in due to the wait period. My dad is pretty obviously not looking forward to it. It's harder to make him admit wrongdoing than my mom. He caved and admitted how much he'd screwed up during the family intervention. But since then he's tried to act like he's just a normal parent. But I've made it clear that pretending that shit didn't happen won't make it go away. And my mom agrees with me. So that's where things are right now. Hopefully my next update will be better. Post 6: Parents let my brother steal from me until I got my aunt involved 16 Aug 2022 I have an update post to make soon. But for now here's one of my past issues with my parents that I talked about during the family intervention not too long ago. Back when I was still a kid, it was very hard for anything to be exclusively mine. And as my brother got older, he craved money for things above all else. He and I both got allowances. Equal allowances. So that was sorta fair. I say sorta because he didn't have to do chores for his, while I did. But that's in the past now because my brother is now having to do all those chores for nothing. My brother always wanted more money though, whether he spent it or not. He loved having new things. But sometimes he'd just save the money instead. Which is odd because you'd think him the kind of kid who'd splurge his savings on the first thing he wants. My brother and I both got allowances of about $25 a month. And I was pretty thankful for it. I usually saved most of my money though. But my brother always wanted more. One day as a teenager I came home to find my room had been ransacked. And the only thing gone was my money. I'd hidden it to try and keep it from my brother, because well...obvious reasons if you readers know what my brother is like by now. I thought I'd hidden it well, but he found it anyway. My mom was home when he did it too, and she acted like she didn't even notice. But there's no way she could not have heard him tearing my room up. I called her out on that during the intervention and she just cried and made excuses about my brother being special, till other family members told her to shut up and own up to it. My room was on the first floor right near the living room. My door was completely in view of the couch. And when I pointed this out back then, my mom just made the "But he's special! He's not like you!" excuse for my brother. I said I wanted the money back, and my mom just made more excuses. And my dad did too when he got home later. So yeah, excuses then and now. Back then I did eventually get that money back because I refused to let it go. I heard my brother screaming as they took the money out of his piggy bank and gave it back to me. And they had the most disappointed looks on their faces, like I'd just robbed my brother. Even though he'd robbed me. But they couldn't tell me off because I wasn't in the wrong, and they knew it. I don't imagine many kids getting in the kind of situations where they are more right about something than their parents very often. A few months later and the whole situation repeated. My brother ransacked my room again and stole the money I'd hidden, again... That time my parents didn't want to do anything about it. And basically said that they couldn't bear to see my brother so disappointed from taking his money. I reminded them that stolen money wasn't his money. And it was really crappy that they were just sitting back and letting that happen. My dad yelled at me to go to my room for saying that. So the next day I rode my bike to my aunt's house and told her everything. She came back home with me and asked my parents if they really let my brother steal from me and did nothing about it. My mom just started whining that my brother is special needs, and she didn't want to make him cry again. And my dad backed her up. My aunt just gave them both that narrow eyed look and reminded them they have two sons, and my feelings mattered too. And what they were doing was VERY wrong. And it meant that my brother would never respect boundaries and would think he can always get away with stealing when he gets older. My aunt asked me openly how much my brother took. I stated the number, which at the time was everything I had, save for the few bucks in my wallet. My aunt gave my parents an expectant glare. My parents tried making a few more excuses. But my aunt had a counter for each one. Finally my parents went into my brother's room. And a moment later my brother was screaming. My parents came back with all of the money my brother took, and practically threw it at me for making my brother cry. My aunt then told them off for acting that way when I'd done nothing wrong, and they picked up all of the money they'd thrown at me and gave a pretty forced apology. My aunt said that she'd be severely disappointed in them if they let this situation repeat. And before she left, my aunt offered for me to hide my money at her house in a lockbox she had. I took her up on that and started keeping my savings over there. My brother ended up ransacking my room two more times looking for money. But I was keeping every cent I had at my aunt's house. My parents actually asked me where I'd hidden it, and I refused to tell. Then I asked why they wanted to know so badly anyway, and my dad instantly got defensive about it. My mom calmed him down and they didn't ask again. Since he couldn't find my money in my room, my brother figured I must have hidden it somewhere else. So he started tearing the house apart one room after another. And who was made to clean up the mess? Why yours truly of course. My parents started to blame me for the whole situation. But when I asked how I was at fault for not letting my brother steal from me, their only counter was that my brother had special needs. I swear, they used that line with me thousands of times. That was something else I heavily berated my parents for in the family intervention. The final straw came when my brother ransacked our parents' bedroom. My parents had a small suitcase safe that they kept some cash in. And my brother locked himself in their room, then took the whole safe and started bashing it around on stuff to try and get it open because he couldn't find the keys. By the time my parents were able to get the door open by breaking it open, my brother had destroyed the room. And he never got that safe open. He just sat on the floor clutching it and crying about the money inside it. My dad was so angry that he turned red. And the actually started yelling at my brother and grounded him. A very rare sight for me to see back then indeed. Then my parents forced my brother to help clean up the mess. After that my brother never ransacked mine or my parents' rooms looking for money again. But he'd still go rooting around every time he got an idea where my savings might be. So I started acting like I was giving hints by repeatedly going into certain places while he was watching. He ransacked the backyard shed, dug a bunch of holes in the yard and under the back porch, and even ransacked the attic. My parents really hit their breaking point with the attic and grounded my brother again. They never figured out I led him on either. My parents did eventually figure out I was keeping my money at my aunt's house. And they didn't argue with my reasoning for doing it. But either my brother overheard, or one of them spilled the beans to him, because the next time we visited my aunt, my brother tried to hunt for the money. But my aunt yelled at him to stop, and my brother would just sit on the floor and cry. This happened a few times and my aunt bluntly stated she'd press charges for any damages if my brother ransacked anything, and also kept a digital camera on hand to record anything if need be. My parents heavily scolded my brother to stop looking for my money. It wasn't his, and he can't have it. Cue more screaming and crying that he wants it like a three year old, even though he was seven at the time. Then my brother said he didn't want to go to auntie's house anymore. So my parents visited less. My aunt visited us a lot more than we visited her anyway. I was pretty much able to keep my money away from my brother till after I moved out. He's never managed to steal cash from me again. His classmates at school were another story. He was caught looking through the backpacks of other kids many times. And he was forced to return stolen stuff, and then sent home, where he'd cry to mom and dad, who then tried to have words with the school, who berated them on letting my brother think what he was doing was ok. They had to teach my brother that it's no ok to go through other people's stuff. And I actually heard him say "But I wanted what they had" a few times. This excuse got used again when my brother stole an envelope with birthday money from a cousin during their birthday party. He tried to stuff it in his shirt and walk out with it later. But the cousin noticed it was missing, and I suspected my brother right away and pointed everyone to him. He ended up crying and thrashing when my dad found the envelope hidden in his shirt. We left that party early. Post 7: My mother mentally broke 22 Aug 2022 This is not an update I was hoping for. And before anyone makes assumptions from the trigger warning, read the post in full. My mom was secretly letting my brother have other privileges back while my dad was at work because he kept begging her. Why? "BeCaUsE hE's SpEaCiAl!" My dad was holding to keeping my brother accountable. But my mom just couldn't do it and started letting my brother have his way again behind everyone's backs. And my brother kept demanding more and more from her once she started giving him what he wanted again. My mom bought a used Switch with a copy of Zelda BOTW and let my brother play it in secret. And was letting him online with his laptop that was supposed to have been taken away unless needed for school work. My brother demanded mom replace some of the things they sold, and called her some horrible things when she said she couldn't because dad would notice. This repeated over the course of several days, and my brother started to get violent. And mom finally hit her breaking point. She outright slapped my brother across the face as hard as she could, and then had a complete mental breakdown where she resorted to self harm. She ended up calling my dad to come home early, because she kept hurting herself. He rushed home and found my mom literally beating herself, and he had to make her stop. She's never done anything like this before. My brother was in total shock and freaking out about it. My dad blamed my brother and whooped his ass raw. He'd spanked me a few times when I was a kid. But I heard from dad later that he'd really wailed on my brother while calling him an ungrateful brat they did everything for. Then took away the Switch my mom had been hiding for him. My mom had to be taken in to the ER, and then had to be held for a psyche evaluation. She was found to be so heavily stressed that her anxiety was through the roof, and had to be hospitalized. I saw a picture of my mom that my dad had taken before she was taken in for the psyche hold. She had two black eyes, and her face was swollen. And she'd ripped some of her own hair out. My dad implied she'd done more to herself. But I didn't see. However my dad begged me to come over and watch my brother while they were away. Because he was afraid my brother may do something insane too after everything that happened. When I showed up, I found my brother huddled in his closet and crying. He wouldn't say much to me, other than small apologies. And he jolted if I even so much as touched him. I ordered his favorite pizza on my dime and had it delivered. It's barbecue chicken with stuffed crust. It coaxed him out of his room and we ate dinner in awkward silence. I played Mario Kart on the N64 with him for a while after that. And he eventually broke down sobbing. He asked me how bad of a person he really was. I hesitated in saying anything at first. But I told him. I said it wasn't his fault for being raised spoiled because that was on our parents. But he is getting older and can't put all the blame on our parents anymore. I said he himself was entitled, violent, blames others for all of his faults, steals from people, and was in need of some serious counseling. My brother cried some more and asked me to leave the room. About an hour went by before he came out and we talked in the living room. My brother asked me what it was like being an adult. So I told him about the responsibilities I have in working a job, paying for gas, rent, utilities, etc. And how much I usually had leftover each month for anything else. He was pretty shocked because no one had ever explained adult life to him like this. And I remarked that he'll be there soon enough in a few short years. My brother said he wished he didn't have to be an adult. He likes having his way and gaming all he wants. But then admitted that he knew I was going to say that was wrong. Which I nodded and said he was correct. I remarked to him about how little I got compared to him growing up because he had to have everything. Which is why I took lemons and made lemonade any way I could. Like how I hid my money at my aunt's house. And how I was afraid to keep nice things because he always wanted to take them away from me. This heart to heart lasted until we saw dad pull his car in. My brother bolted back to his room before dad came in the house. When I saw my dad, he really didn't look so good. He looked like he'd been crying, and was a complete mess. He apologized to me in tears and said he's finally truly starting to understand how awful of a parent he truly is. And couldn't believe he was blind to it for so long. We hugged, he cried some more, then he spilled his guts to me about everything that happened. I've never seen him cry so much. It's been well over a week now and nearing two. And thus far my mom hasn't returned home yet. I'd hoped that if I waited this long to post about it, my mom would have come back. But wherever she is right now, she's still there. My dad won't say anything more about what's going on. But I think my mom might have been labeled a danger to herself, and has been institutionalized. Otherwise I think she would have been home by now. My brother has calmed down a lot. And he does the chores dad gives him without complaint. Dad also gave him back the Switch mom had bought for him, and said not to eff things up this time. Because if he wants all of his privileges back, he was gonna earn them one by one. Yesterday I talked with my brother over the phone while dad was still at work. And he says he's afraid of dad now. But also said that dad hasn't even so much as raised his voice to him since the day mom went mad. He admitted that he still wished things could go back to how they used to be. He misses all his electronics, his games, and his bike. I asked dad about the bike, and he said he'll get him another one in time. But for now he's just too worried about mom to even think about that kind of stuff. I'm kind of at a loss how to move forward here. Obviously I know that my family is messed up, and need support in a variety of ways. I am starting to feel sorry for my brother. But at the same time I know that he needs this lesson to move forward in life. But I did not agree with dad spanking him the way he did. I haven't said that to him. Nor do I think I ever will unless he does it again. Which I'm not so sure he will since he regrets it immensely, and my brother is starting to understand how to behave. But I still feel really mixed up over the lot of this. I knew getting my family change for the better would be drama. But I didn't think it would be at this level. **Reminder - I am not the original poster.*\* Marked inconclusive because not everything is resolved or positive. submitted by /u/opinionswelcomehere to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]
