Image 1 is the original colour of the closet door that leads to the master bathroom. My original plan was to paint them. They are in a solid stain and don’t look like real wood in person. They look like painted wood. However upon thinking more about it, and once my bathroom was complete, I feel like they may actually work for this space? The other options I were considering were along the lines of beige or a light sage, and they feel a bit plain…?I do not have the budget to have them professionally painted and would be painting it myself. I would do two coats of primer and 2 coats of paint which would be very tideous. I’m not sure if it’s my laziness talking, but I feel like the pop of bright color actually works for this space! The main issue are the dresser drawers are hard to access (which means we should get a new dresser), but in general the doors are not very attractive and are a pain to push back and forth. House came with the closed-in shelving with two sloppily cut closet doors on slides. They hardly worked and were a major eye sore. Goal of the project was to stick to only using leftover cabinet plywood and poplar boards from another project. I also wanted to expand/strengthen the shelves. Finally, there is (for some reason) a vent for our central air in there that we want to leave open. Decided against rerouting it into the hallway just to save time and money. I started by ripping out the doors and casing. I replaced with a mitered face frame out of 1x4 poplar with shims to make it plumb/level. This was probably the mistake that caused the most headaches. I should’ve just build the frame square and shimmed it to place with the hinges installed. I didn’t have a ton of space where I was working on this, so I didn’t think it was feasible. Next, I cut the shoe flush with the drywall and face frame so that I could case all four sides, which matches the rest of the house. I used an oscillating tool with a fresh blade, plus some patience. I installed shelves by building supports using the same 1x2 poplar I eventually used for the doors with the cabinet and the plywood boards. I cased in the vents with the scrap plywood until I ran out (which was fine anyway, since I intended to leave the vent exposed). You can see the original depth of the shelves on the second level of the first picture. By notching it around the vent, I also got a little nook for smaller items. Next, I picked six of the straightest 1x3 pieces of S4S poplar I could find in my leftover pile and built the cabinet frames. I measured as carefully as I could to get a 1/4” overlay on the face frame and a 1/8” gap in the center. Since everything was not perfectly square. I built the doors square to my longest measurements and decided to live with slight inconsistencies. I knew I could adjust the hinges anyway. I built the cabinet doors using half lap joints after cutting them to length with a miter saw. I don’t have a table saw, let alone a dado blade, so I used a Kreg crosscut jig with a circular saw to get 2.5” worth of kerfs at each end. I cut them to 3/8 depth before chiseling and filing. The nature of the crosscut jig meant it was very difficult to be precise, so I needed to do a considerable amount of sanding to get things mostly flush. Once I had them flush(ish) I clamped them together with wood glue and checked all four corners for square. I sanded and primed everything on a 120/220/400 progression. Painter friends told me I needed more “tooth” than 400 later, but whatever. It worked fine. I used BIN spray primer and Behr’s cabinet/trim enamel paint. Highly recommend that paint. I had previously used a cheap SW trim and door paint elsewhere and this was miles better. I hung the doors with half overlay soft close hinges I bought on Amazon. They were surprisingly simple to install, but I didn’t have a jig to bore the holes. Getting those holes to exactly 1/2” without poking the forstner bit through was nerve-racking. I did a final coat of paint on the doors and moldings now. Finally, I unclipped the doors and laid them butt together vertically so I could lay out the rattan and cut it to length. This took two tries because the original Amazon seller gave us 7 feet in our 10 foot roll. That was annoying. I soaked the rattan in warm water for 30 mins, let it air dry for 10 and then pulled it mostly taut as I stapled it. It tightens quite a bit as it dries, even pulling some of the staples halfway out. I hung the doors back up and am now picking out door pulls. I also spackled the little holes on the side where the stool went wider than the new casing. I’ll have to do a skim coat and some painting there still. TLDR: Made some mistakes along the way but it’s done and now I’m doing finishing touches. Sorry if the title sounds clickbait-y. My ex posted on aita with the “aita for not wanting to close my gfs closet” and I just wanted a place to respond. My now ex bf (23m) and I (24f) we were together for 2yrs, would’ve been 3yrs next month. We meet through a mutual friend (my roommate at the time) because of our similar interests. For context: I’ve lived in my apartment for about 4 yrs, the mutual friend stayed in the beginning but they move 3 yrs ago, so since then I’ve been living on my own. I was originally going to have my bf move in with me once my lease ended, but of course, change of plans. So my ex posted on aita for leaving my closet door open yet he missed very important details. One question the kept appearing was why didn’t 𝘐 close the door even though I👏NEVER👏LEAVE👏IT👏OPEN👏. Ever since I was little I’ve trained my brain to always make sure the closet door was closed. I’ll add a TW here just in case, but when I was 6, I was sharing a room with my older sister, one night she went over her friends house for a sleepover. My parents and I got home a bit late. I remember it being hot since we had the ac on. I went to bed but was tossing and turning because it’s 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 hot. I kept hearing a noise from somewhere but wasn’t sure from where and just assumed it was the ac. I laid on my back just staring at the roof and heard my closet door being open. My bed was faced towards the closet so when I moved my head down, I could see this old man coming out of it. I screamed and my parents came running in. My dad grabbed me and I saw my mom hitting that man with one of her favorite pans. We called the police and later found out that the man was homeless, must’ve snuck in while we were away and hid in my closet when he heard my parents car come in. *Since then I’ve suffered from ptsd in fear of someone coming in my closet again. I slept with my parents for a few years after that. We moved to another state once I hit high school. Parents got me a therapist when the incident occurred and to this day, I’m still going to therapy. I felt like it wasn’t working tho because it just like I was venting and the therapist would go “uh huh, and how does that make you feel?” Instead of suggesting something to help me. That was until my current therapist, she suggested that I could use something like a nightlight and place it by the closet, then I asked if I use something else like something that could stick onto the walls. It was first these big glow in the dark Dino stickers. I felt kinda silly about it first when I did put it up but when I had my sleep paralysis, I was still scared but was now able to tell what was sleep and what wasn’t and fave me a sense of comfort. I changed the themes occasionally to dinos, planets, and now stars. For the past 7 years, it’s worked for me. *I moved out of my parents home at 20 to live in an apartment with my friend who I meet in college (I only went for 2 years). I explained to her about my situation because we shared a room and there’s only one closet. She understood me completely. She only ever left it open once when she came home from a Night Shift. She was remorseful and never did it again when she saw how bad I suffered from it. *Now to me ex: we pretty much clicked when we met. Had similar hobbies, liked exploring new foods, it was fun. I also told him about my trauma. Asked that I didn’t mind it being open during the day, but at night, it needs to be closed no matter what, he could still put or take something out of it but to close it back up. He complied throughout the entirety of our relationship. It wasn’t until a few months ago where he started to act very controlling. He would say small comments about certain foods I would eat, like how it’s affect my liver or something and recommended other things. I brushed it off thinking he’s just looking out for my health. It started getting to a point where he suggested I quit my job at one point when he finished college and moved in but I told him that it’d be beneficial for 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 of us to be working. He never asked again, however he did start asking things like if I could cook for him even though I said I was tired from work, would I stop working if he made enough money for the both of us, if I still wanted kids. I think he wanted to ask me to be become a stay at home wife/mother but I could be over analyzing. On the night before we broke up: when he decided to “test me”, I had the worst hallucinations since I was a teenager. I wake up, see the door open, and start to imagine the man I saw all those years ago. When I woke the next day it was around 4 am, I was able to move and started to cry immediately to a point where I couldn’t shred anymore tears and apart from the migraine from crying too hard, I felt a numbness. So when he woke up a few hours late I waited for him in the kitchen just honestly feeling tired, I didn’t yell just spoke in a monotone voice. I told him how I had one rule and that was to close the door, he got defensive saying he felt like I was lying about my trauma just to see if he would care for me. I told him to leave while I thought things over. I never ignored him and he never texted me the whole week. But now I know for sure that there’s no saving this relationship. And you can get your stuff from your brother, I already told him what you did. So good luck. 👍 I’ll be moving in with my sister out of town, I’m not renewing my lease, I just want to be with people who actually support me. Minor update: I booked a therapy session for both us so we can have a proper conversation. TL;DR - the drywall and knockdown texture prevent level closet door jambs and baseboards. Help!! I'm on year 3 of installing closet doors in my bedroom. House is located in MN and was built in 1940, but the section I'm working on was added on to by the previous homeowner about 12-15 years ago. The spaces for the closet doors were finished off prior to when I bought the house and no closet doors were installed. And from the look of it, had never been installed. The trouble I've been running into repeatedly is trying to mount the closet jambs, baseboards, and trim so that they're level. From my very inexperienced eye, this was being caused by the knockdown texture on the walls. So I tried to sand the texture down. I spent 3 hours with 80 grit sandpaper and it just wouldn't level out. Whatever this wall texture is made out of, it's harder than dragon scales. I bought a huge metal scraper and that could only remove the texture if I tapped on the scraper with a hammer. That, of course ruined the drywall in the closet openings. So I grabbed the aforementioned hammer and a chisel and ripped the drywall off the closet openings. Insodoing, I had to remove aluminum corner bead that was installed all the way around the closet door openings. This created a major "divot" in the drywall which I sanded out, primed, and spread over with 90 minute mud in an attempt to level out the wall. I spent another 3 hours with 100 grit sandpaper trying to level the drywall and it just won't level out! There's like a 1/4" - 3/8" drop from the edge of the closet door openings to the adjacent wall. I don't know what to do. It just doesn't seem right to me to slather on 3/8" worth of mud on the wall just to get the trim and baseboards flush. I'm about ready to rip all the drywall off the studs and re-do it. Trouble is, if I do that, I'll have to reapply knockdown to the new drywall so it'll match the rest of the room and all the rest of the house; all the other rooms have knockdown. Trouble with that is, I'm not good at doing the knockdown thing. The spray cans don't do a good job since the existing texture is boogered on there quite thick. I've had to patch a lot of drywall holes in this house, so I've tried it before. It doesn't work well. Short of maxing my credit cards on professionals, what can I do or should I do? I'm at wits end! Hey y'all. Long time lurker, first time poster in this sub. I hate my closet doors. I hate most closet doors. The sliders suck. The bifolds suck. What closet doors don't suck? I don't have space for barn doors, or I'd consider it. I've got maybe 1.5' - 2' of room outside the doorway on either side to work with. *Edit: room to the side of the door. We got full outward swinging space. I was referring to available wall directly to the side of the door. I didn't know accordion doors existed until recently, that sounds like bifold but X times worse. Saloon doors are a thing, but I can't imagine those being great when it comes time to sell.
