I’ve tried the big four, Ring, Reolink, Wyze, Eufy for 5+ years, here is my honest opinion. I’m not payed or endorsed by anyone. Eufy: Amazing camera hardware / quality, terrible app and super buggy. App will spam you with promotions and ads often, and is super buggy and unrefined. You know how on Ring you simply swipe across your history and it loads in milliseconds? On Eufy, that takes second+ per event, you have to tap on it, wait for it to decrypt locally and push to your phone, have (possibly) choppy blayback with a video scrubber that has been broken for years, and then exit out of every clip to see the next. It sounds like nitpicking, but it takes minutes more per day vs Ring’s swipeable timeline, and that adds up a lot. The main pro of Eufy is free rich notifications. Reolink: Very good hardware, way less buggy than Eufy, still mediocre app. The polish and ease of use with the scrollable timeline and easy interface simply isn’t there. It does seem they put more effort into their backend though, as the app and cameras will timeout a lot less. Wyze: Mediocre at everything. A more polished app, but not as much as Ring, Mediocre camera quality, also person notifications and ai features are subscription locked. Does not have the same ease of use as Ring either, no scrollable timeline, etc. Ring: Great app, great polish, poor battery cameras and wifi antennas. As mentioned before by far the best app by a mile. Polished, rarely hangs, and ultra fast live view and video search. Their AI has improved a lot too (thanks to the fact it’s happening off device, they were able to give even older 1080p cameras AI features). The main cons with Ring are that you need great wifi strength at the camera’s location. I assume Ring has a mentally that is basically “if it’s going to be an unstable connection, and we rely on the cloud, we’re just going to take the device offline if it has a bad signal strength”. Note I say strength, not speed, 50/20mbps is enough for a ring camera. The other cons is I’d avoid their battery cameras unless if you are monitoring 25 feet or less of space. They are sadly not the most reliable when you add in two so many variables (signal strength, PIR, battery saving features, etc) If you don’t want a subscription, Ring is not the camera for you. But for me, I’m fine paying $200/year for alarm professional monitoring, a polished and easy to use app, the power of AWS for AI and give great person / vehicle detection accuracy (compared to a tiny on device AI model on eufy, Reolink, etc. In my opinion, you will never get a good app without a monthly subscription. Developers cost money, and camera sales alone I assume aren’t enough to cover the bill for a very polished experience. Hey, greetings from Austria :) I'm building a privacy-first home security camera called the ROOT Observer, and today I've finished the second prototype, although it's the first one that is presentable. Most security cameras, e.g. from Amazon Ring or Google, process and store video entirely in the cloud. Recently, Ring introduced a new feature called Search Party that lets you scan across all cameras from other people in your neighborhood to find a lost pet - enabled by default. Moreover, they were in talks with Flock, a surveillance company working with the US government directly and called out for providing video footage to ICE. The last few months I've spent building the open-source firmware and app to power this privacy-preserving alternative. It enables end-to-end encryption, on device ML for event detection, encrypted push notifications, OTA updates, health monitoring and more. No database, no accounts. The camera is a standalone product that connects to a dumb relay server that cannot decrypt the messages that are sent across. This way, it works right out of the box. I guess the title sounds harsh but I am kind of struggling with this. My husband and I have been together for 5 years. We also work for the same company and carpool to and from work a lot. Our young child is in daycare at our office so it’s the three of us arriving and leaving together most days. (Maybe relevant?) My husband left his laptop on top of my car yesterday when we left work. Despite me suggesting so many times that he get a case and also that he does not set his computer on top of the car, he does this every single day. Probably once a week, he can’t find his computer and panics that he left it on top of the car (it’s usually in the back seat or something). But this time, the dreaded thing actually happened. When we got home last night, he couldn’t find the computer and was panicking that he left it on the car. I assured him it was probably still sitting on his desk at work, but when it wasn’t there this morning, he had security check the cameras and sure enough, we’d pulled out of the parking deck with it on the roof. To make things a million times worse, he’s been working on a *huge* complex spreadsheet for months and despite the fact that our company migrated all files to share point over a year ago, he told me today that he had his spreadsheet saved ON THE DESKTOP! Since the cloud migration, you actually have to work to save something locally on your computer. I love my husband and I know he is absolutely beyond devastated about losing all of his hard work. I know this is probably off topic for r/sysadmin but I feel like this gets dumped on IT anyway. TLDR: Anyone using a system that records locally and the cloud? We had a police officer asking if we had any footage of an event and now the security cameras are getting attention because the resolution is too low to capture a license plate even if the hard drive in the DVR was working and half the cameras weren’t blown. I want to recommend something that records to the cloud because I did work for a company once where there was a break in and they just stole the DVR along with everything else. I paid $200 for the doorbell camera. I own the hardware. It is drilled into my house. But if I stop paying the $10 cloud subscription it basically becomes a paperweight. No recording, No alerts, and No history. They are holding the functionality of the device I bought hostage behind a monthly subscription which is shitty. It feels like we do not own anything anymore. We are paying a subscription just to keep our own hardware working. At what point do we stop buying this stuff? I think I'm done. I am new to the field, so I might be missing something, but: Is it my impression, or basically *all* IP cameras on the market either require a smartphone app to be configured and/or an internet connection with a cloud account to get the streams? Does anyone sell a camera that has no such things? For example, a camera that: Creates its own wifi network for the first setup, or use an Ethernet cable? Or maybe the camera had a blind spot right at the door? Even though the camera covered the entire corridor in front of the elevator. I rewound the lobby camera recording; yes, there's the man entering the elevator. I rewound the fourth-floor camera recording; the elevator arrived, opened, closed, and nobody exited. Okay, maybe he went down again quickly before I saw? I checked the elevator movement log; it showed it went down to the second floor shortly after. I looked at the second-floor camera; nobody exited there either! The elevator continued down and stopped in the lobby again. So where was this man? Did he enter the elevator and just... not exit on any floor? At first, I thought maybe I was imagining things, maybe I was tired, maybe there was a glitch in the camera system. I let it go. But two or three days later, the exact same scenario. The same man (or someone who looked incredibly similar; as I said, his features were very generic, didn't stick in the mind), enters from the lobby, gets into the elevator, selects a floor (once the fifth, another time the third), the elevator goes up, reaches the floor, the door opens and closes, and nobody exits on the corridor camera! This is when I started to get seriously worried. This wasn't normal. I began to focus on this man whenever he appeared. I noticed something even stranger: the timing of his appearances and disappearances made no logical sense at all. For example, I'd see him entering the hotel at 1:00 AM, get into the elevator, and supposedly go up to the sixth floor. The elevator arrives, nobody exits. Then, exactly two minutes later, I see him exiting the elevator in the lobby! How?? The elevator indicator still showed it was on the sixth floor! There was no recorded movement of the elevator descending! It was as if he entered the elevator in the lobby, and exited it in the lobby two minutes later, but in between, the elevator "traveled" to the sixth floor and back without actually moving? Another time, I saw him exiting the elevator in the lobby at 3:00 AM. Okay. I kept watching the entrance cameras to see him leave the hotel. Nothing! He didn't leave! So where did he go? The restroom? Did he sit in the lobby? I scanned everywhere on the cameras; no trace of him! It was like he stepped out of the elevator and vanished into thin air! And then, maybe fifteen minutes later, I see him entering through the main hotel door again! Where was he for those fifteen minutes if he never actually left? I started going crazy. There were no walls; it was a terrifyingly vast open space, but visibility was poor, as if there was a light, moving fog. And the sounds... the sounds were coming from "beings" moving in that fog. I couldn't see their forms clearly; they were like tall, thin shadows swaying and moving in an inhuman way, as if their joints were everywhere. And they were the source of those sharp siren sounds. One wore a suit, a woman wore a dress, another man wore a galabeya... like ordinary people who had been snatched and placed in this horrifying place, frozen forever. Was the man with me in the elevator one of them? Or did he travel between them? I saw all of this in just a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity. I felt a wave of icy coldness spread through my entire body, and pure terror, an existential dread, like the entire universe was wrong and inverted. I felt intensely nauseous, my stomach churning. Suddenly, as quickly as it had opened, the door began to close again, with that terrifying screeching sound. The sounds and the sight started to fade gradually as the door closed. And the man with me? Completely unaffected. Still standing in his spot with the same cold indifference. The door closed completely. The weak, flickering light returned to its (already dim) normality. The whining and grinding sound started again, and I felt the elevator move again in that strange way, as if returning to its place. I remained leaning against the wall, my whole body trembling, unable to stand properly. I looked at the man, then at the closed door, unable to process what I had seen and heard. This wasn't a hallucination; it was real, terrifyingly real. After about a minute or less, the elevator stopped, normally this time. And I heard the usual "ding" of arrival at the ground floor (lobby). The inner door opened, followed by the automatic door. The normal lobby air, the warm yellow lobby light, the faint hum of the air conditioning... everything returned to normal as if nothing had happened. The man who had been with me stepped out of the elevator calmly, walked towards the main entrance in the same manner, exited, and disappeared down the street. I remained standing inside that damned elevator for about another minute, unable to move. My body was rigid, my mind screaming. The sounds I'd heard were still ringing in my ears; the image of that horrific place was seared into my eyes. The sight of the frozen people with their white eyes... I couldn't get it out of my head. I stumbled out of the elevator, feeling like I was drunk. I went back to the security room and sat down on the chair, feeling like I was about to collapse. I sat there staring at the empty monitors in front of me, and at the elevator control panel which had returned to normal, showing the elevator was stationary on the ground floor. What was that? What had I just seen? Was this elevator... a gateway? A portal to other places? Other dimensions? And that man... was he traveling between these places? Was he one of the inhabitants of that horrifying dimension I saw? Or was he just the "driver" of this elevator on its strange journeys? And those frozen people... were they people who rode this elevator at the wrong time, saw what shouldn't be seen, and got trapped there? All these questions swirled in my mind, and I couldn't find any logical answer. The only thing I was sure of was the terror I felt. Not the kind of fear you see in movies, no, this was a deep dread, a fear of the absolute unknown, of the fact that there are things in this universe we're not supposed to know about, and if we stumble upon them by chance, our lives will never be normal again. I couldn't finish my shift. I felt that if I stayed another minute in that place, I would go insane or something would happen to me. I gathered my few belongings, wrote a quick resignation note, left it on the desk for the manager, and walked out of that hotel, disappearing into the street before dawn broke, feeling like someone was following me, like those terrifying siren sounds were still whispering in my ears. Since that day, I haven't been able to sleep properly. Every time I close my eyes, I see the red and blue light, and I hear those sharp sounds. I'm afraid to ride any elevator alone. I'm afraid of enclosed spaces. I've started to feel that the reality we live in is incredibly fragile, and that there are "other places" existing around us, perhaps intersecting with ours at certain moments, in certain places... like that damned elevator. I left the job, and I'm still looking for new work. But this fear inside me won't go away. I wrote this here to vent, to tell what happened to me, maybe someone will believe me, maybe someone has gone through a similar experience somewhere. I don't want anyone to know who I am; all I want is to get this nightmare out of my system, and to warn anyone who might work in a place like that, or notice something strange like this. If you see an old, suspicious elevator, if you get a bad feeling about it, if you notice a strange person using it in an illogical way... stay away from it. Get away immediately. Because you might not be going up to the floor above; you might be going somewhere else entirely... a place from which no one returns intact. I'm sorry if this is long or rambling, but I'm writing exactly what I feel and remember. Those sounds... I still hear them sometimes when I'm alone at night. I hope it's just my imagination. The cheap cameras are all from privacy-invading companies like Amazon and Google or from privacy-invading China or use hackable clouds. Paying more for wired (non-WiFi) cameras that avoid all this seems to be key. I’m wondering if anyone has recs because I just bought a Blink Mini and am thoroughly disappointed. I’d like a camera with no monthly subscription to essentially keep an eye on my pets when they get sick and I have to go to work. A nanny cam essentially. The Blink Mini will not work for me because when it tells me it noticed motion, it then takes 15 seconds of loading to start my live feed to see what is going on. By then, basically everything is done. I need something that will respond better than that. Mostly everything except being able to watch live feed in a decent amount of time, being affordable ($30 ish), having okay photo quality, and being able to alert me to motion are extras to me.
