I’ve had some here and there but this is baby #4 and I’ve never breastfed and I’m producing about 5ml of colostrum every time I had express… is this normal?!

Pumping colostrum and not seeing a single drop. So I take off my pumps only to see I in fact did not use the right size and all of my colostrum went into my bra lol This is what I get for being greedy, I already have 8oz in the fridge at 36 weeks but noooooo I wanted to induce labor and collect more…I should have stopped while I was ahead haha

I never thought about it tell I have birth at 40 weeks, and that night they gave me a breast pump I didn't know how to use figured it out the colostrum came out (thank god that is before milk). I can honestly say for me personally me only thinking about things I can control helped me, I did take a lot of classes online to prepare myself though

I am still nursing my 20 month old! I’m 37 weeks pregnant, so it’s colostrum instead of milk right now but she’s doing it just for comfort and I don’t mind. I didn’t anticipate our journey going this long! It’s often a sweet moment but then other times it is a contact sport to be nursing a toddler this age ��

This can happen from having your nipples sucked pretty consistently and with quite a bit of force (and not by a kid LOL). Did it look like colostrum?

Did you ever find out if this is a proper cracked nipple? I am 37 weeks and seeing blood in my colostrum. I don’t think my nipples are damaged but they do and have always looked like yours. Not sure if that’s what could be giving me issues or if cracked nipples are more severe

You’re mum is talking out her bum. Keep feeding baby, you may find that as your milk transitions to colostrum again (can be from around 16-17 weeks gestation baby may start refusing, getting fussy, or hopefully they’ll like it and keep going. Also keep an eye on nappy output etc. you can dry up during pregnancy or supply drop but this is not a certainty.

Has anyone been successful in collecting colostrum with their FIRST pregnancy?? All of the success stories I hear are from women who are on baby #2 or more. I’m 35w, and plan to talk to my doctor about when I can start attempting to manually express and collect colostrum. I haven’t had any leakage so far, so I’m worried I’m putting pressure on myself. I’m wondering if anyone here has any advice on how & when to start collecting colostrum. I’m currently 28w1d so I’m not at a point where I’m producing enough to collect but my boobs have been leaking a little almost daily the past few weeks. I’ve done some reading that says you can start collecting colostrum the last few weeks leading up to birth as it’s really good for the baby but idk anyone personally who has done it so I’m still kind of confused. They didn’t give much of a reason but seemed pretty set on me “just leaving them alone and not agitating them” I know if you do it too much it can induce labor contractions. But then I hear stories of moms who have tried everything to go into labor, and couldn’t. UPDATE: Had a chat with my dad and he apologized and we’ve made some space in the fridge and freezer dedicated to my breastmilk. And now I have 36ml total frozen and I couldn’t be more proud. I’m 19 and still live with my dad (I know I’m a complete loser lol.) I’m 37 weeks 6 days pregnant and spent over an hour spread out today collecting nearly 2ml of colostrum in a haakaa collector. I know it’s not much but I’m still very upset that it all went to waste. I cried washing it down the sink and feel like I could have done more to prevent this. Am I crazy for being so upset over something so stupid? Edit: On top of this I had a hard day finding out during a fetal assessment that I’m lower on amniotic fluid than I should be. I constantly see mothers stressing about “milk not coming in right away”. What is with the expectation that you will have milk as soon as you have a baby? Why don’t people think tiny frequent amounts of colostrum for the few days isn’t enough? Who is telling these women they need to supplement in the early days? (Which then decreases how much your baby is in the boob and encourages the delay) I’m a this maybe just an American thing? Edit: I don’t meant shame women that need to supplement. It’s more of wondering if there is an unrealistic expectation that we should be immediately flowing with milk baby should be content and not cry or feed frequently. This is question for moms saying “I had to supplement because my milk took 3 days to come in” (which is normal) I worry women are feeling inadequate due to poor information. (Don’t get me started on TikTok oversuppliers making women who “only” pump 2-3oz inadequate…which is a normal amount!) Edit: I’m adding that there are definitely circumstances when supplementation is needed (poor latch/milk transfer, low blood sugar, severe jaundice, dry diapers, premature babies, etc.) My post was more directed at mothers thinking you need to supplement without these issues. Newborn babies are hungry all the time and are constantly waking up to feed frequently and aren’t supposed to sleep well. This is how they keep their tiny bellies full with the 10-30mls of colostrum that is produced. And this is how you body gets the signal to make milk. Being ridiculously engorged and in pain on day 4-5 is NORMAL, this is expected to happen while your supply comes is and takes a long time to regulate. I've seen posts from people dismissing the colostrum hype completely, saying there are no proven benefits from it, and others are fools to believe in it. Then I see posts where people share what actual changes they have noticed after taking it. Some are very detailed and it seems they are noticing real, measurable results. I'm seeing a lot about gut health and better skin. So what to believe...? I'm looking to improve the impacts menopause has on me, like hairloss, fatigue, dry skin, joint pain and more. I just had my first really successful colostrum collection and man am I impressed with my body! I started practicing expressing a few days ago but didn't collect it since it was literally about 3 drops. Yesterday I started a concerted effort to express three times a day and collect it in an oral syringe. I got maybe .5 ml total for the day. I just did my first expression today and I got about 1ml! “Hello!” from the great beyond of giving birth. For those who are trying to induce spontaneous labor, those at 37 weeks and beyond - I strongly recommend talking to your OB/midwife about getting the OK to collect your colostrum. I really wanted to go into spontaneous labor and got the OK to start using my pump (on one breast at a time) to collect colostrum at 39 weeks. It was a chance to familiarize myself with the pump, gain confidence about breastfeeding, and store a little bit of colostrum just in case. I used the pump for 15 min per day on massage mode on each breast. Then, I would collect what was in the container in 1 mL syringes, label with the date, and put them all in a ziplock freezer bag with my name and birthdate on it. Well, pumping didn’t start labor like I’d hoped and at 40 + 1 I went ahead and was induced at the hospital. I brought my bag of frozen colostrum in a cooler just in case. Everyone during delivery was informed I had colostrum at the ready. Well, “just in case” happened! I ended up needing an emergency c-section and babe was in the NICU for a few days. This means I wasn’t there to breastfeed her from the beginning. The nurses in the NICU were able to give my baby the colostrum I collected and supplemented with donor milk when needed. I was also allowed to go to the NICU and breastfeed her. The 20 or so mL of colostrum I provided allowed my babe to get MY milk right off the bat.
