Burp cloths with premade holes for crochet border?
Hi! When I was a kid, it was all the rage to have these beautiful crochet bordered burp cloths like in the image attached. I have some babies coming into my life that I’d love to border some burp cloths for to keep that going! Does anyone by chance know if there’s burp cloths out there that come with the holes for the border to be added onto? Or suggestions for how to make my own?? Thank you!! submitted by /u/username6824235 to r/CrochetHelp [link] [comments]

I'm shaking and sweating and crying
My mom and I are both fiber artists (not by trade, but more than "just" a hobby I'd say). She is a talented seamstress, makes her own clothes and she did a lot of patchwork when I was a kid. She taught me how to sew and knit, and I've been doing cross-stich embroidery for ten years now. These past eight years she's been leaning more into weaving, spinning and a bit of knitting. She made a friend who has a few alpacas and a handful of angora rabbits. A few months ago I got into crochet. I fell back in love with yarn and garment-making, I've been practicing and I feel ready for my first sweater. So I asked my mom for guidance finding yarn suitable for my project, and going over wool options with my limited budget. We had a lovely knitting afternoon with her friend and they showed me her amazing 100% angora yarn, hand spun from three different coat colors. I saw it, felt it, and fell in love. It was exactly the right weight, too. My mom just said "I guess we know what your birthday gift is this year!" and decided to get me ***a sweater quantity*** of this gorgeous, luxurious material. That's at least $300 dollar's worth of wool! And a whole season of shedding for these lovely rabbits. Her friend is going to spin exclusively for my project for the next several months and I'm overwhelmed with gratitude, joy, excitement, you name it. I almost burst into tears.. I just wanted to share the happy feelings I guess! submitted by /u/Lulu_Altair to r/YarnAddicts [link] [comments]

WHY is nothing I do good enough for my husband to STOP criticising me?!
(This is a long one) For context: I'm 33 (recently Dx ADHD combined type) and my husband is 37. We have two children (youngest is still a baby) and have been together for over a decade, married for 6 years. We've had big ups and downs since we got married but prior to that a pretty steady relationship. We came close to divorcing a few years back but ultimately decided to give things another go. We've had frequent arguments about housework, meals, he's been critical of my eating habits and doesn't understand why I binge on sweets and snacks. One of his biggest issues when we were at our lowest was how unattractive I'd become after having our son because I ate junk food and made no effort to 'make good choices' when it came to meals. I was very much in survival mode and paid no attention at all to how I looked or what I ate. He's been a committed gym-goer for his entire adult life so is and always has been in great shape. This time I made sure to lose the weight quickly and be more conscious of my food and that seems to have worked enough to earn a few complements and words of praise. He still has no interest in being intimate with me, though (the last time was when we conceived our youngest, over a year ago). I've tried to address each one of these and have improved overall (he's said things are getting better), but the problem is it never seems good enough and I'm running out of ideas. I take the kids whenever he wants to go out with friends or to play sport or get a workout in. I make meals, organise groceries, clean out the fridge, reset the house before bed. I fold and put away the laundry - take the kids out and about and yet the list of things I need to 'fix' keeps getting longer? • didn't put out eldest's hairbrush back so he couldn't find it in the morning • same as above with the moisturiser • haven't updated him about my therapy and where I'm at with finding methods to manage all my adhd symptoms • His latest criticism is that I've been spending time at the end of the day while we're watching tv (from 10pm) crocheting instead of finding ways to manage my adhd or work on the things he's asked me to • Left baby clothes to be put back into storage in a laundry basked (we have 2) which he put in thr gatsge but dumped clean laundry ontop - he says he didn't know what was what and I need to communicate that stuff with him to svoid confusion because it's impacting his day to day functioning in the house He said he wants us to get to a place where we can move beyond the day to day issues and work on 'us' again, he says the fact that he bas to constantly tell me to do things sets a 'tone' for how we communicate in our relationship and that's stopping us from progressing to better places. I don't get it. Am I really that hsrd to live with ? Is t actuslly my ADHD that's the problem or is he just a bloke with really unreasonable expectations??? submitted by /u/Left_Pomegranate3954 to r/adhdwomen [link] [comments]

Story time: over-consumption culture made me close my Etsy shop
I am a crocheter and a couple years ago, I ran a successful Etsy shop selling some stuffed animals that I made! It started as a way to make a little spending money (on top of my day job) and also allow me to crochet as much as possible without amassing a pile of things that I didn’t need. This Etsy shop started out being a lot of fun - my customers loved my work and were super happy to receive my work! But as I started advertising my work some more (via short videos on TikTok & Instagram), I started selling out more often and people couldn’t get the items that they wanted - I noticed that my customers started acting almost frantic. I would announce the day/time that I would restock my Etsy shop and would completely sell out within minutes. I had to imagine that people were waiting at their computers trying to get their hands on something from my shop. All for just a stuffed animal. Then the bulk orders came, I started noticing that a couple people were spending upwards of several hundred dollars at my shop every month. I hoped that these were all gifts, but honestly who knows that many people to give gifts to? I started feeling very anxious about this new pattern of buying habits - almost guilty that people were wasting all their hard-earned money on some stupid stuffed animal that I made - and that confused me. Shouldn’t I be grateful that so many people were loving my art and supporting me & my work? But I couldn’t shake that feeling, so I closed down my shop. I took a big, long break from crocheting after closing down my shop. I needed time to reframe what crocheting meant to me and find another niche in the craft. I loved making stuffed animals, but I came to the realization that I was just creating clutter for others to fill their house with - I wanted to create items that were useful or cherished. I tried making clothes but didn’t love how my first few cardigans turned out. Then a friend announced that she was having a baby and I decided to make a baby blanket. This friend was so thrilled to receive this gift (it was a surprise too!) and it really restarted my love for crochet again. Luckily, several other friends have been growing their families in the past year and they’re all getting baby blankets!! Being able to step away from the culture of over-consumption and be able to give someone joy through just one thoughtfully crafted & slowly produced gift has brought me so much more joy than my Etsy shop ever did. TL;DR - Etsy shop started catering to the culture of over-consumption. I started crocheting thoughtful gifts and my hobby started bringing me joy once again. Edit: wanted to provide more info about the Etsy shop - the stuffed animals were for older kids or adults only. I used plastic eyes that could be a choking hazard so they weren’t recommended for little ones. My customers seemed to be mostly college-age “kids”, think similar to the Squishmallow trend a few years back. submitted by /u/adsiderum to r/Anticonsumption [link] [comments]

I’m making crochet Christmas presents for my family this year, but my sister says she doesn’t want one. i’m broke & that’s why i’m crocheting my gifts, so i was wondering if anyone had an idea of what i could make her that she’d be happy with?
Pictures included are a couple of the gifts i’ve made so far. So as you read in the title, I’ve been pretty broke all year because i lost my full time job & have been struggling to make ends meet. This month i was able to pick up more shifts at the event company i work for & got a some extra money to put aside, & i used some of it to buy crochet hooks & poly fill off of amazon, & yarn from the dollar tree & i’ve been teaching myself how to crochet. Not to toot my own horn but I’ve picked it up very quickly & am enjoying it a lot so i decided to make my family crochet gifts this year since i can’t afford to get everyone gifts (i have like a medium sized family so the money adds up) & my older sister is wanting us to do white elephant (limit $50, & apparently i HAVE to spent $50 according to my sister) & she wants to do a saran wrap ball & wants us to split the cost (another $50..) My sister doesn’t seem to be supportive of me crocheting unless it’s to start a business. every time i show her something i’ve made for someone else she doesn’t seem interested & honestly even seems a little annoyed when i talk about it. my mom said that maybe she’s jealous bc she tried to get into crochet & couldnt, & ive always kind of had issues with her resenting me for random things like that since we were teenagers (she’s 5 years older for context), but i don’t understand why she would be annoyed by it. she’s made me feel super discouraged tbh, like maybe i’m wasting my time making everyone something that they’re gonna hate. everyone else has been supportive of it, but her not seeming to care at all & even be almost offended by the idea of me gifting her a crochet item makes me feel like crap. i’m not going to purchase her anything, because i’m not purchasing anything for anyone except a couple of small items (chapstick, candy, etc. i’m doing gift a basket type of thing with the crochet items) but every time i sit down to make her something i end up thinking “she won’t even want this what am i doing” & then scrap it. so i asked her yesterday what i could make that she would use, & she straight up told me she didn’t want any crochet items. she said its because our mom used to crochet & she never liked the stuff our mom gave her & it “wasn’t her style”.. but like im not making clothes or bags? i was gonna try & make “unique” &/or useful things from patterns ive found on youtube (i’ve made a butterfly bookmark for my grandma, a book keychain for my uncle, plushies for the kids in my family). but i know if i crochet something for everyone except her, she’s gonna be upset. so like what the heck am i supposed to crochet someone who actively makes it obvious that they hate the fact that you crochet? also she’s given tons of handmade gifts for christmas when she was broke so it’s not about that. TL;DR - My sister has been super negative about me crocheting christmas gifts & says she doesn’t want one, but i’m not spending more than $10 on anyone bc im broke & that includes her. is there something i can crochet that she’d maybe be happy with? submitted by /u/Key-Current-3653 to r/CrochetHelp [link] [comments]

I am the yarn person
I'm a high school teacher with MANY things in my classroom. Kids come in to ask for pads, for tape, etc. Also snacks - they're in cabinet 1. Also lamps? I need to get my lamp back from theater. Sometimes hats or swords. In recent years, kids - both whom I know or don't - have brought me torn clothing and asked can I fix it, so sometimes I'm teaching third period and mending pants. But recently I have also become yarn teacher. The children have been bringing yarn. They put it in cabinet three. Four of them have sidled in to ask can I teach them to knit. They know if they need crochet help, they are likely to find a crocheter in one of my classes. So I was winding a ball of yarn before school a few weeks ago, as I keep my winder tucked away behind my desk. In flumped one of my crocheters to tell me her yarn had exploded and could I Please Fix It. So I spent fourth period teaching from a student desk, covered in godawful tangles of yarn, and fourth period spent fourth period intermittently laughing at me. Then someone bought some yarn and came in and asked could she use the winder please. Passing period, kids trickling in, watching her curiously. Monday, one of my level two kids came in looking mournful and holding out what looked like two really upset cakes of chenille which, she said, hate her. And I got the pleasure of watching her face light up as we wound it into something usable. Thus wasn't what I thought my day job would look like when I was growing up. But I love it. I love that they're bringing parts of their lives, learning to use new tools, building small community together. I love that I'm a little more a person - someone who can fix your pants, teach you to knit, help you wind your yarn, and I get to learn a little more about them as people. Today I was knitting casually in class, and my level one class offhand ended up practicing asking what I was making, so we learned shirt and mom and we had some of the beginnings of real, impromptu conversation. One of my fours asked whether this was a birthday present for her for Saturday, and I told her obviously it was (it is not). Tomorrow is aunties club. A few of them will bring their yarn and needles and we'll sit for a couple hours after school with cookies, and we'll knit. I'll hear about their finals and their college applications and whatever is on their minds. I used to look forward to Fridays because of the weekend; now I look forward to it because of aunties. submitted by /u/sweet_crab to r/knitting [link] [comments]

AITAH for buying more yarn after my husband told me that I can't "knit" during the weekdays anymore. I don't knit I crochet.
Hello Charlotte and Mike. I watch you all the time on YouTube. I just love your hair. Congratulations on getting married. I f 40 I'm a stuck at home mom and wife. I say stuck at home because I live in a rural area and unfortunately due to bad anxiety and PTSD from childhood trauma, I don't drive so I'm always stuck at home. There is also no public transportation otherwise I would have a job. So I do what stuck at home parents do. I cook, I clean. I'll admit first hand that my home isn't perfectly clean all the time. Sometimes I do slack and laundry piles up a little. But that is also because at times I run out of detergent. Or I will have baskets of clean laundry not put away. It's not like I have bags of trash in the corner or anything. I also have depression and use crocheting as a outlet. So to the title about buying more yarn after my husband said that I can't " knit" during the weekdays. It was on the weekend my husband doesn't work the weekend unless he gets called in. He has a stressful job. I was crocheting on the bed watching TV with my husband. I don't remember what exactly got him all grumpy suddenly. Something to do with clothes being in the dryer. So he tells me that I can't " knit " on the weekday because I have been slacking on the house a bit. Mind you after he gets off work and changes from his work clothes to clean clothes he will just change and leave the clothes on the floor just feet from the dirty laundry basket. It pisses me off but I don't say anything because I don't want to make a big deal about it. I also like to make candles out of bee's wax. I just find it soothing as the wax melts. He told me a few months ago that I need to choose a hobby candles or crochet. So I decided to put candles on the back burner. No intention of stopping. Candles just take longer. So the next day again he tells me the same thing no more " knitting" on the weekday. It really pissed me off. Again I don't say much other than "OKAY ". I didn't want to start a argument because the kids were home. Plus I didn't want to listen to him. So Monday rolls around and I decided to use my PayPal card and a ten dollar Walmart gift card and bought some more yarn for a project that I wanted to finish because I ran out. Since it's not for knitting I figured it doesn't count. So as long as the dishes are done garbage is taken out. I took it out today. After his uniforms are clean and he has clean socks and underwear, I will continue to crochet. I should state that I want to get a stock pile of the stuff that I make so I can set up a booth at craft fairs. I will also mention that I have sold several things that I have made. submitted by /u/UsualCoconut2884 to r/CharlotteDobreYouTube [link] [comments]

Looking for crochet doll/animal pattern that’ll fit in newborn size baby clothes
I’ve recently accepted that I won’t be having anymore kids in the near future, but I’m not ready to get rid of my daughter’s newborn clothes. So I got the idea of making a crochet doll or stuffed animal that’ll fit into newborn sized clothes so those clothes could be repurposed. I was thinking about doing something that looks jointed so it bends easier at the knees and elbows so it’s easier to dress and undress and doesn’t look wonky in the clothes. Does anybody have any potential leads on a pattern that’ll work? submitted by /u/Kooky_Stock_3866 to r/crochetpatterns [link] [comments]

Can we have another “useful thing that’s not a blanket” post?
What have you crocheted (or knitted!) that serves a purpose other than clothing or a blanket? We had a similar post a little while ago and it was so useful! Inspired by that post, I made a stuffy hammock and bag/sack for my kids. Kids love them, I love them, no more trying to fit an ocean’s worth of stuffies into a drawer, thank you fellow crafty people for the idea! submitted by /u/WhyCantIBeFunny to r/crochet [link] [comments]

What are your favorite pattern books for clothes? Especially for older kids and women.
Hi, I really enjoy crocheting clothes for myself and my kids. I own a few books on stitches and amigurumis, but I'm having trouble finding books with children's clothing that are not for babies/toddlers. I'm in Europe by the way. You you have any suggestions? I prefer books to separate online patterns and YouTube videos. For adults I already own modern crochet sweaters by janine myska for example. submitted by /u/murpahurp to r/CrochetHelp [link] [comments]

Wanting to crochet summer clothes. Will it be too hot? Hard on the skin?
Hi, I've been making amigurumi for a few months and now I would like very much to be able to make summer clothes. I was looking at 100% linen yarn but I'm not sure it will be enough: after all, crochet clothes are a little bit bulky. FYI it will be 40°C in the summer (in the shade). Also I have very sensitive skin and I'm not sure I can stand all the "bumps" when I move around. Do you have the same issues? Am I worrying for nothing? Here are the brands/products I found online on a french website: - Katia lino100% - Katia Concept Soft Lino - Rosario 4 Alfama - Lang yarns Crealino - Carasol lino colour - BC Garn lino. On this one it's said it's ok for kids so I guess it's comfortable? Or is there another reason to mention kids? Some yarn said it was soft, other rustic, and some even said both so I'm totally confused :-/ I'm open to other brands of course. So, any advice? submitted by /u/Berilia87 to r/CrochetHelp [link] [comments]

Decided to crochet on my commute to work🙃
Today was the first time I decided to crochet on my train ride to work. I figured: oh well people judge anyways, might aswell be productive. It was all going really well until at one stop a guy my age (18-21) came in and sat down next to me. He looked at what i was doing and I thought to myself: "meh hes just looking whats the harm?" And kept focusing on my project (a shirt for a friend since she likes crochet clothes). I then notice hes holding his phone very strangely, sideways but the camera aimed straight at me. My anxiety tends ro make me a bit paranoid in these moments so i ignored it and just kept doing what i needed to do. Then once my stop came closer i started packing my stuff and as I was doing that I took a closer look at the guy next to me, who then proceeded to put his phone away quickly. But as he was putting it in his pocket i could see that he was infact filming a video the whole time🙃 My stop came immediately after so I did not want to make a fuss and just shot him a glare while I left. Now I feel anxious about trying to crochet in public again😭Seriously whats so odd about crochet that you feel the need to film someone??? Edit (For cultural context): Im in Germany. Theres a tiktok-trend where people post other people online under a ridiculous sound that do "weird" stuff. Usually its kids filming addicts or homeless people, but you will also get the type where its usually just someone 'odd-looking' minding their own buisness. I do have to say with my overall dressing style that I do fall into that category and therefore have recieved more bullying and gotten alot more paranoid about bullying aswell. I do however really appreciate all of the encouraging comments and people helping me try out less creepy perspectives on why he might have thought recording me was a good option. Later that day I did crochet a bit in the Train again, I wasn't really able to focus tho because there was a local football game and the train was full of drunks😅Thank all of you kind people❤️ submitted by /u/RestlessMimikyu to r/crochet [link] [comments]

Is wearing a LOT of crocheted clothes a fashion sin?
I'm thinking for example the majority of your tops being your handmade work. And I am not talking bulky sweaters, but also some plain stuff in 1 colour, like t-shirts, tops, blouses. I understand that for some people some of the clothing items shall really not be crocheted just because you can, but I am just asking about regular clothes. I think I kind of carry that prejudice I was thought at school as a kid/teen about the handmade items, quite often it was frowned upon by other peers. Do any of you have a lot of handmade "regular clothes" and wear them often? Do you get any comments, i.e. at work? I am worried that a different "form" of the crocheted items may bring some unwanted attention or even jokes. submitted by /u/sotbulle to r/crochet [link] [comments]

AITA if I don’t buy my friend and her child a Christmas gift?
Some background: I’ve been struggling to find work after being laid off. I am in school working on a certification to improve my options, but all of the money I get is going to bills, rent, and groceries. This is something that is pretty well known in my friend group. Because of my financial situation, I’ve been pretty transparent with my friends that I’ll be crocheting them gifts for the holidays (I have tons of yarn already on hand) and I don’t expect anything of anyone because times are tough for most of us right now. Most of my friends are completely cool with this, partly because crocheting has been my side hustle for years and they know how much time and effort I put into these projects. But one friend (we’ll call her Ann) gave some pushback regarding me making her and her child (1m) anything. I’d asked Ann if her kiddo needed any warm clothes, blankets, or plush toys and she said to look at the registry she has open still from his birthday. I explained that as much as I’d love to buy off the registry for Christmas, fiscally it isn’t something I can do, and I was planning to make gifts this year. She argued if I’m not buying gifts for anyone else I should “easily be able to buy gifts” for her son AND her. I tried to reiterate that I cannot afford to buy gifts, but she waved me off saying I was “being difficult.” This really frustrated me, not because she didn’t want me to make either of them gifts (I’ve had some parents share concerns they have regarding a child having an allergy to something in the material, dyes, or just personal preference, all of which I completely understand and respect), but because she seems to feel entitled to being the only person in my life to receive a store bought gift. I’m opting to not get her or her son anything now out of principle. I know it sounds petty, but if I were to get enough money for a gift for anyone, it would be for my SO or dad, both of whom have helped me get through this rough patch. I talked to a mutual friend about it and she thinks I’d be an AH if I gave everyone else gifts but not Ann and her son, and that I should maybe try to just get something under $10 for each. I really don’t think I should be obligated to spend money on someone who is being this entitled and rude. AITA? ETA: Ann is married to one of my relatives (not a SIL, but 2nd cousin in law type thing), and is also friends with many of the people in my friend group. My use of “friend” was kind of the short version, I typically limit my contact with her as it is. UPDATE: I spoke with her husband and explained the conversation with Ann, and he’s appalled and a bit angry. He assured me the kid has no allergies and has crocheted items from Ann’s MIL that he loves. He even asked if I could do a bear beanie for little one to go with his little bear onesie. So kiddo will get a handmade gift for sure. Ann’s husband intends to talk to her about this, because they apparently had talked about a gift for me that, in his exact words, would help me out or would be very useful to me. So there’s that. submitted by /u/Funky-Carpenter7600 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA for only crochetting and knitting clothes for my youngest?
I (42F) gave birth to my youngest child in the summer. I have six kids in total but my eldest is technically my stepson. I'm only clarifying because the 4- year age gap between my husband and I would look very strange if I didn't. My kids are: Riley (24M), Amanda and Adam (16F&M twins), Imogen (10F), Aiden (8M) and Hannah (6 months F). After having my youngest, I decided to quit my job to take care of her. Thankfully, she's a very peaceful baby so I've found I have a lot of spare time and I decided to learn to crochet and knit. I started off with small items like coasters, socks and small table mats but I've decided to progress on to clothing. This is where the issue arose because I only made things for my youngest. This was because as she's a baby she's very small and I can make items for her much quicker than for the others and I'm quite impatient so I like to finish things quickly. Another reason was that because I'm still learning, I'm making mistakes and the garments aren't coming out perfect and a baby would obviously not mind or notice that. However, my older children are getting annoyed that I'm not making anything for them, I tried to explain my reasoning and I promised that I'd start making things for them when I get better at knitting/crochet but they think that I should make other things instead of only making things for Hannah. It's mainly Imogen and Amanda being annoyed about this, my sons don't seem to care. I spoke to my husband (46M) about it and he said that he understands where I'm coming from because it seems logical to practice on garments for a baby who doesn't care about how they turn out, but I should understand the older kids may be feeling left out whenever they see Hannah in a new handmade sweater or hat. I still don't think I'm wrong because I don't understand why they'd be feeling left out. I'd understand if I only made things for Imogen and not Amanda or vice versa because they're both old enough to receive a gift but Hannah is literally six months, she couldn't care less. My eldest, Riley, thinks that I am wrong about this and if I give something to one of the kids, I have to give it to all of them. AITA for declining to crochet a sweater for my cousin?
I (38f) crocheted myself a cardigan recently that I really like, and wear often. I went to visit a cousin (42f) and her daughter (18f) with my mother (71f) and wore the cardigan. Cousin’s daughter complimented me on it and abruptly asked me to make one for her. I explained it took me about 40 hours to make mine (it’s fine yarn and pretty long) and that I could send her the youtube tutorial I learned it from. She starts to tear up a bit and sniffles, while telling me “that’s not fair, you know I don’t know how to do that kind of stuff”. I try to gently explain that the youtube tutorial is really good at showing/teaching how. She’s still looking pouty. Cousin pipes up at this point saying it would be nice if I could just make her one, that she’s too busy to spend all that time on a sweater bEcAuSe sHe WoRkS. This hit a nerve with me because my cousin often makes passive aggressive comments about how I “don’t work” (I’m a SAHM/WAHM to 3 kids under 8 and have a little home-based business doing tailoring and mending, some crafting etc). She doesn’t consider my work to be “real work”, acts like I must live a life of leisure. Previously I had always bitten my tongue and change the subject because I didn’t want the drama but I just let it out this time. I told her I do work, and I do it while caring for 3 children. She LAUGHED and said it hardly pays enough to be considered work. I lost my temper and told her my finances were none of her damn business and that she’s out of her fucking mind to think she can treat me so rudely while trying to demand hours and hours of my labour for free. Cousin starts crying at this point and the visit obviously ends. Afterwards my mom tells me she is very disappointed in me for “swearing in front of my cousin’s child”. And that I’m partly to blame for wearing the sweater that started the argument and I “wasn’t polite”. I flatly told her that’s ridiculous, it’s an article of clothing. It’s meant to wear. I have quite a few pieces of clothing I’ve made myself, should I stop wearing them all in case entitled people decide they want me making them all free clothes? Anyways now my cousin and cousin’s daughter are thinking I’m the asshole, and my mom thinks we’re all assholes apparently. AITA? submitted by /u/maaaaaaaaaaaw to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

I’m taking my son to buy a dress.
I have two sons. A six year old and a four and a half year old. My older boy is into Minecraft, Mario and sonic the hedgehog, play fighting, and playing in the mud. My younger enjoys princesses, baby dolls, and stuffed animals. His favorite colors are pink and purple. He has also been growing his hair out for the last two years. He likes having hair styles like mommy. Both of my boys have gotten a mixture of stereotypical “boys” and “girls” toys as they’ve grown up. Dinosaurs and dolls, horses and action figures, a play kitchen and hockey net and sticks. We’ve always let them lead in telling us what they want to play with. They get to choose the clothes they wear. If there are different colors of an object we’re buying for them they choose their colors. They decide how they want their hair to look like. We’ve always told them that it’s their body and they had a right to choose. When we moved to our new house two years ago we unpacked a small rainbow dress that I had crocheted when I discovered I was pregnant. He was two years old. It was a bit too small for him, but he loved his “princess dress”. Obviously after a year he could no longer wear it. Two days ago, he asked me to get him a new dress since his rainbow dress is too small. I told him I would think about it. I talked to my husband to get a game plan about this. This morning, we asked him why he wanted a dress. He said because they're pretty colors and they have flowers or stripes on them. Then we told him he can wear whatever he feels comfortable in, but that dresses are usually worn by girls and he said "just because dresses are for girls doesn't mean that I can't wear one". We said that people might make fun of him if he wears a dress. We asked what he would say to someone who told him that dresses are for girls. He said, "I'll say that this dress is for me!" I’m taking him to the store today. This kids confidence is through the roof and I'm so happy he feels comfortable enough to be who he wants to be. Im a little worried of what others will say to him, but I want him to be happy and comfortable in what he looks like. This is definitely uncharted territory for me who grew up in a very conservative and restrictive household. If anyone has any kind tips or comments please feel free to share. Update: He has picked out a swirly rainbow dress and a blue dress with an under the sea theme. He’s been twirling constantly and even his older brother tried on one of the dresses. He played outside with all of his friends and they all said they loved his dress. The older one who he hasn’t seen in a while asked why he was wearing a dress for girls and he responded by twirling in a circle and saying “because I love it!” Then they went to go play kitten shop and Minecraft. To answer a few questions; we asked him what kind of dress he wanted. He specifically wanted a rainbow dress. We showed him skirts or colorful shirts but he maintained that he wanted a dress instead. He knew exactly what he wanted when get got into the store and he couldn’t wait to put it on. We also don’t think that he is transgender. As of now we are under the assumption he is just a boy who loves pink and twirly dresses. If the time comes and he comes to the realization he’s a girl, of course we will be supportive. We also don’t think the right answer is to restrict his desire to dress the way he wants to avoid bullying. As someone else as nicely put on the comment thread bullying can happen regardless of how he dresses. I know that first hand as I was bullied relentlessly for my glasses and behavior due to undiagnosed ADHD. He’s tough as nails and can deck anyone who’s bullying him and look great while he does it. Lol. Thank you for the lovely and supportive comments. I’ve already purchased a few suggested books. I really appreciate the tips on girls clothes. You’ve helped a ton! Thanks again! submitted by /u/kristigem to r/Parenting [link] [comments]

WIBTA if I asked to stay with my foster moms instead of bio mom?
Hello, I lurk reddit but don't really post. I am 17F When I was 15 my mom lost custody of me. I was pretty upset and kind of out of it, if that makes sense? I don't remember everything but I know there was an issue placing me bc I am trans. At first I didn't have visitation and blamed my foster moms and we could only sometimes text or call each other and sometimes my caseworker who was supposed to do supervisied visits didn't show up. before lockdown last spring she said she had a new job and I could go back to being with her. I was excited because I missed her but I also felt like, flippy stomach. It got put on hold with Covid bc she lost the job and I felt guilty for being relieved. Recently (we talk more now, my foster moms take me to the park so we can visit outside) she told me that she got a job and moved into my uncle's house and he said I could come to. She was happy but I don't want to move in with my uncle. He uses my deadname and insults me (slurs/jokes). When I asked about it she said she knows its annoying but I should look passed it because he is giving us housing, and i could cut my hair to smooth the way. When I wasn't sure she reminded me of the complaints I used to give about my foster moms (like no technology after 10pm, bedtime by 12, curfew). She said I could go back to my old school and have my phone all night. idky but I don't mind not being on my phone after 10? if I'm not sleepy my foster moms and I will play cards or do a puzzle. one of them taught me how to crochet and I'm getting pretty good at it. they have a dog that sleeps with me and I walk everyday which helps my depression and anxiety. they put me in private therapy once a week instead of the state paid therapy (only once a month). before when I was going to go back to my mom they told me they'd been putting 50% of the money they get for having me in a bank account for me (they called it something else but I forget) At my old school they would make jokes or bully me. my new school noone knows my deadname bc my foster moms registered me under my new name. Its a fresh start and I want to do my senior year here because my grades are so much better and my counselor is helping me research college. i tried to tell my mom but she started crying and said she is busting her ass and sacrificing while I am ‘vacationing' in a nice house with new clothes (cos my foster moms took me to get girl clothes) and I am letting them buy my love to replace her. that made me cry bc i don't see my foster moms as my moms, maybe cool aunts? when I first came and was being a jerk they said they said they are enterem(?) guardians not my mom. WIBTA if I told the judge and my mom I want to stay here? I think I might be TA because all the reasons I want to stay are selfish and don't take into account all that my mom has done for me in the passed and how hard she has worked to get a job/place to live. sorry for long post (my core teacher says I use parenthesis too much!) Update: Hi, wow. I was originally planning to respond to everyone but there are so many comments I don't think I can do that. Thank you for being kind and encouraging me and your nice messages. Yesterday during breakfast I told my foster moms and showed them this post, I was kinda over whelmed about all the responses and I guess they could tell because we decided to have a mental health day and talk about my situation and make some plans. I realized that what I was really afraid of is that if I said no to my mom then when I turned 18 and have to leave she wouldn't want me again and then I would have no where to go. My foster aunts told me that they didn't tell me this before because they didnt want me to think they were pressuring me but that I can stay for longer and they can help me have a 'plan' like looking for a job or going to school. They said that they have an agreement btwn them that when they take in a kid who maybe can't go back they don't kick them out after they age out. I feel dumb because I've met one of their other foster kids who stayed until she was pretty old (like 26) but I forgot about her. She is a teacher now AND graduated from a 4 year college so we zoomed her and we are going to talk a little bit once in a while about scholarships/programs for former fosters and she will read my college application essays for me when I'm ready to apply. I'm hoping that by the time I am 18 and graduate my mom will have more money saved and we can get a place together with our savings while I go to community college and then transfer (something for math like computer science or engineering). But I have decided to stay with my foster moms for right now and maybe longer if my mom is still with my uncle when I graduate. We emailed my caseworker to set up an appointment to talk about my case before court because lots of you guys said I should know more about my case and I agree. I am going to write a letter (also suggestion from you guys) to my mom explaining that I love her and she is my real mom but I can't live with my uncle because it isn't safe for me and we can still have a relationship while I am here. If she doesn't get very mad we are going to clean out the backyard and put a table/chairs out there and have weekly gettogethers and maybe christmas if she can. We brainstormed different stuff we can do like dinners (cos I'm learning to cook or watch a movie on my school laptop, or walk smudge together). The one I'm excited about is that my mom was a really good knitter before and one of my foster aunts is going to go get some knitting needles and maybe we can hang out and craft or she can teach me (Im excited because she called it stitch and bitch! lol). my foster aunts (i'm gonna call them that now so my mom wont be as sad) switched my therapy to twice a week for a while to help me with my feelings and to help with my letters (I'm gonna write another one to read for court) the last information update is that my mom isn't a bad person like some people said. the reason she lost custody was because of some stuff that happened with my dad that is against the rules to say so I didn't put it in. but she stood up for me and we had to go to a shelter (she lost her job because she worked nights but the shelter had curfew) and then we didn't have a car or phones so she was having trouble getting a job. I thought I got taken away because the time at the shelter ran out and we didn't have a place to live or food and I missed too much school, but I realized I don't know for sure so that's why I agree I need to talk to my caseworker and my advocate to find out what happened. thanks for being so nice to me. I am very nervous about what my mom will say but I feel like everything else will be okay. I have to go to school now! :) submitted by /u/jojobizadvaark to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA for giving homemade presents?
My children are in elementary school. I crochet for a living and design my own patterns. Wherever they get invited to a birthday party I make a sweater for the birthday child. I've made a few unicorns, a dinosaur and a handful of super heros. I always check with the birthday child's parent for clothing size and favorite character/animal/whatever so the child will like the sweater. It's something unique and special I love doing. The recipients have always been excited and the parents love them.(I'm not sure how to attach a photo or I would show you the sweaters) Well, this week my daughter was invited to a birthday party. A friend of mine (unrelated to the party in any way) and I were talking and I mentioned my daughter getting to go to a birthday party for the first time since all the craziness started this year. She looked me dead in the eye and said "your not making a sweater this time are you?" I was hurt and asked what she meant. She went on to say how it's really tacky to bring a hand made present and if I can't afford a present I shouldn't let my daughter go. I didn't know how to respond. They cost me 80$ to make and take about two weeks. I always enjoyed giving children something unique and special that's made just for them. Now I'm confused is it really tacky? Or is it thoughtful like I thought. EDIT: to answer somethings commented a lot. The sweaters aren't the only gift. There's always a toy, or stuffed animal, or craft kit(depending on the kid) I just like the main gift to be something unique for each child. These aren't traditional pull over sweaters. They're not like a solid color with a picture on it. These are closer to dress up outfits that just happen to be a sweater. For example, I make a unicorn sweater. With a horn, ears and mane on the hood and swishy tail on the bum. Then each sleeve has a little edging in the mane color to look like hooves. They've got pockets too. submitted by /u/CrochetQueen1991 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
