Mine was frizzy at high doses of pred - much better at lower doses but length and weight is important. As well as a hairdresser that understands curly hair of all sorts. I've tried several products - all just make my hair claggy and I hate that. Don't wash it as often - mine is worst freshly washed and after a few weeks is much better and compliant.

Why is my hair only curly in the middle?
Why is my hair straight at the roots and ends? Why is it only curly in the middle? Full disclosure, I used ChatGPT to blur the background and remove the local logo from my shirt. My hair has gotten curlier as I’ve gotten older. I noticed recently that the ends of my hair are not so curly or wavy. The roots of my hair have always been straighter as shown in the photo. Why is only the middle section curly?? My normal routine: I wash and condition my hair every other day usually. I rotate products. Today I used Elvive Dream Lengths Split End Sealing shampoo and conditioner. Other days I use OGX tea tree clarifying shampoo and conditioner. I also have a bottle of Mane ‘n Tail Herbal Gro shampoo that I randomly use sometimes. Today I washed and conditioned my hair this morning with the Elvive Dream Lengths, combed it, and let it air dry. This is my normal routine. I’ve been trying to grow my hair out to a longer length. I haven’t had a haircut in 6 months. Sometimes, I scrunch my Prose curl cream in my hair or put OGX coconut milk hair oil on the ends. Sometimes, about once a week, I blow dry my hair with my Shark blow dryer and use the round brush attachment to straighten it. I recently got the Tymo Curlpro Plus curling tool that I’ve used a few times. Other than those tools, I let my hair be. I’ve never colored my hair. Why are the ends not curly?? Is it time for a chop? submitted by /u/27OwlySnow to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

As someone who HATED their curly hair as a teen, I'm finally embracing it in my late 20s and I couldn't be happier. I thought I'd share yesterday's hair (1st Pic) along with other hair days I have throughout the last month
I have always been afraid of expressing myself as my mom and uncles used to tease me for how my hair curled and I became embarrased by it (it was just teasing but I took it to heart because I THOUGHT curls were "feminine" and I wanted to be a big strong man in a rural area. I know curls aren't a feminine thing btw) anyway my friend encouraged me to grow my hair out at the beginning of 2024 and I'm so grateful. People always compliment my hair, and I hate that it took me so long to embrace a part of me. The last photo is from May of this year when I had a different method so you can see the difference. Thank you to everyone who commented on my last curly hair post and gave me tips!! Have a great holiday season everyone 💖 Products listed at bottom. Routine: I wash my hair two times a week. For one wash just shampoo and conditioner. Once a week: wash with clarifying shampoo, then shampoo, then conditioner then conditioning treatment With still dripping wet hair, apply curl creme then scrunch, then apply mousse and scrunch thoroughly, then gel and scrunch. Diffuse hair. Scrunch out crunch or use hair oil Shampoo: not your mother's curl defining shampoo Conditioner: not your mother's curl defining conditioner Deep conditioning treatment: Mielle Organics Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner (5-15 minutes) rinse out Curl creme: Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Leave–In Defining Cream Mousse:Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Activating Mousse Curl Gel: Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Quinoa Frizz Control Gel Oil: Oaui hair oil I wear a satin bonnet to bed every night, and use satin pillowcases and do not do a refresh routine. submitted by /u/BigKountry333 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

What did women with curly hair used to do in the olden days?
My grandmother, who I believe I inherit these curls from, kept her hair short since her teens. She lived on a small town in farm country so there wasn't much chance to go to "the city" (what she called our small town when she was young) and get hair product. If there even was hair product that worked. There's no way I could have done my routine even 40 years ago. Was cutting it short the only option for curly girls "back in the day"? submitted by /u/rainshowers_5_peace to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

The change in how curly & kinky hair is perceived now vs 20-30 years ago
I was reading about The Babysitters Club comic adaptations: Jessi's hair is shown as naturally curly rather than being chemically straightened, her younger sister Becca has her hair in locs, and their mother has natural hair. Both Ramsey sisters are shown wearing sleeping bonnets for protection in bed and Jessi wears them at sleepovers. It made me think... "How popular is relaxing little girls hair compared to when I was a kid?" I don't know any kids, but I've noticed increased rep in natural hair over the past fifteen years. It was probably kickstarted with "I Love My Hair" in 1998 and "Happy To Be Nappy" in 1999, but caught on in the 2010s. My first recognition of it was "I Love My Hair" from Sesame Street, released in 2010. Growing up a late millennial (borderline zoomer), natural hair was the norm as a young child. I know some families straighten kids hair in primary school, but it wasn't the norm around me in the 2000s. I got my first relaxer in 6th grade, around age 11 or 12. I was told it'd make my hair more manageable and easier to maintain if it was straight. In the early 2010s, I wanted to go back to natural and do a "big chop" as it was called. I got a ton of pushback from other latinos and black people. "It's not the 70s or 80s anymore. No one wears afros". In the mid-to-late 2010s is when I started noticing a cultural shift in how curly hair is viewed. Natural hair products and natural hair in media became more common. If anything, it's a generational thing. Boomers and gen x prefer straighted hair, while gen z and gen y lean curly. And this isn't just brown and black people who this all applies to. It's not just a 4a-4c issue. I'm not Jewish, so this is all just my POV on things on an outsider. But there's also seem to been a shift amongst white and white passing people. I'll use fictional media as an example: Kitty Pryde from Marvel Comics. Kitty is Ashkenazi Jewish. When introduced as a teen in the 80s, she had thick curly hair. By the late 90s, however, her hair was increasingly depicted as straight-- seemingly naturally straight now. The change seems to have been because her original look was deemed too stereotypical. "You're saying since she's Jewish she has to have curly hair?" In the late 2010s, there became a pushback against this. It turns out many Ashkenazi superhero fans preferred Kitty's classic look. "Many Jewish people naturally have curly hair. There's nothing wrong with that". Over the past 3 or 4 years, Marvel keeps on switching Kitty's hair depending on the comic. And it's been confirmed in-series that she does straighten her hair. The comic has made some parallels between her straightening her hair (and calling herself "Kate" instead of the more Jewish "Kitty") and her trying to downplay her mutant side. submitted by /u/Gallantpride to r/decadeology [link] [comments]

People getting weird and defensive/gatekeeping curly hair
Hi fellow curly girls 👋 I figured I would joined this group because in the regular hair-care sub, I was getting attacked by some lady who was insisting that my curls HAD to be done with either a curling iron or curler set. Despite me telling her I don’t use heat on my hair at all. So I figured this sub would be a better place. Here is my curly girly routine: I usually have my wash day once a week, unless I’m doing a lot of activity and it gets oily faster, then I will wash it twice a week. Occasionally, I will swap out shampoo and conditioner with a curly girl co wash. (Brand: Hustle & Co hydrating co wash for coily/curly hair) The products I use are honestly pretty basic, drugstore brands. All aimed for curly hair though. On wash day I wash with Herbal Essences jojoba oil and lavender curls shampoo, and condition with Herbal Essences jojoba oil and lavender curls conditioner. I apply a generous amount of conditioner and comb it through, then I twist my hair up into a clip, and let it stay in my hair until the very end of my shower. When I rinse, I use cold water, and use my fingers to massage my scalp and ensure there is no residue near my scalp, but I don’t rinse the conditioner from my ends completely, I prefer it to be a bit slick. Once I’m out of the shower I wrap my hair with a towel for a few minutes, take it out, apply rosemary oil, then apply Cantù shea butter curling cream with praying hands to the bottom half of my hair avoiding the roots, next I apply one drop of hair oil geared for curly hair (no idea the brand) to my ends. Sometimes I will add in a defining cream, then a bit of gel and comb my hair with a wide tooth comb. Lastly, I section my hair in half, and I take each individual curl while hair is wet, and I wrap it around either my finger or a makeup brush, and then I slowly untwist it. I then cup the curl with my hand and scrunch it up toward my head to further define it. I do that to each section of hair, let it air dry, and voila 😊 submitted by /u/RegularPoint3932 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

I think I found the best products for my hair (finally)
I have been trying products for years and I think I finally landed on my holy grails. My hair hates coconut products so it makes it a tad challenging. Routine: Wash with Redken cleansing crème, condition with Dove Intensive Therapy. New products are Ouai anti frizz cream on soaking wet hair, bounce curl brush and scrunch Ouidad Vitacurl+tress effects. Hover diffuse and some air drying. I go back in and pixie diffuse after. submitted by /u/Successful-Price-600 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Affordable curly products did more for my hair than any expensive product ever could!!
I typically used many “expensive” (aka $15+) products in my hair and my while my hair is a mixture of 2C/3A I always had a bit more waves than ringlets. I recently had twins and we had to cut down on spending so I’ve been shopping around for more affordable products that are under 10 bucks. I was SHOCKED to find that my hair responds better to the lower priced products than the higher priced ones! My head is full of ringlets and I haven’t finger curled a single piece! I am beyond happy and I thought I would share some products that really help my super dry and very thick hair. All of this stuff can be found at Walmart and dollar general! Routine and Products: Shampoo: Palmer’s Coconut Oil Shampoo ($7) and Aussie’s Curly Shampoo ($5) Conditioner: Palmer’s Coconut Oil Conditioner ($7) Leave in: Cantù Leave in Conditioner ($6) Curl Cream: African Pride Curl Cream from dollar general ($6) Gel: Eco Olive Oil ($5) Brush: Knock off Denman at Walmart, and paddle brush ($4) Spray bottle: Walmart spray bottle ($2) First I “clarify” with Aussie’s shampoo then shampoo again with Palmer’s. Then apply Palmer’s conditioner, followed by the Cantù leave in. Section hair and re-wet section before styling because my hair dries insanely fast. Brush through with the paddle brush then apply African Pride cream. Brush with knock off denman, then gently scrunch hair with a tshirt. I do this all over my head and at the very end I get a pea sized amount of the Eco gel and dilute it with water. I then gently scrunch all of my hair. Hover diffuse with conair hairdryer and regular diffuser attachment that comes with it. Scrunch diffuse when hair is about 50-75% dry. (EDIT: I use next of us hair oil, you can also find it at Walmart for around 5-6 bucks. I put it on my hands before this next part!) After that I separate the big curl clumps and gently shake out my roots to create more volume. Then I’m done! It’s so crazy how much high end products are pushed onto us when we may not even need them! I hope I was of some help to all curlies on a budget 🩷 submitted by /u/Spare_Invite_8191 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Day 1 of going back to drug store products
Yesterday, I decided I’d had enough of my frizzy, stringy, dry, and dull curly hair. I’ve spent HUNDREDS of dollars and watched countless hours of YouTube videos, ridding my life of silicones, sulfates, and alcohol hair products. I spent a few hours looking at the curly hair forum here on Reddit and watched a few YouTube videos before heading over to my local Target. This is ONE DAY after switching to drug store products. I have fine, low porosity, low density, wavy curly hair. Idk maybe 2c-3a? Despite expensive shampoo conditioners and masks, my hair was dry, dull and weighed down. Here’s what I learned and here’s what I did today: 1) my hair likes silicones 2) suave daily clarifying gave me my curl pattern back 3) i was using too many products (cream, mousse, and gel) and too much of all of these. One medium/strong hold product is enough for me and I don’t need to use much. 4) oil will ALWAYS sit on top of my strands making it look greasy and dull. “Scrunch out the crunch” (cast) with my bare hands, no oil 5) goodbye to expensive microfiber towels, I’m switching to old tshirts 6) no more air drying, I’m diffusing even if I’m short on time 7) my hair doesn’t have to be sopping wet to put product on and shape my curls, just moderately wet. 8) I was using way too many masks high in proteins Today I used: 1) suave clarifying shampoo (1.99) 2) Pantene volumizing shampoo 3) Aussie total miracle conditioner (not for curls, the one with the peach on it) 4) kinky curly styling custard (I used about two tablespoons?) 5) applied products by sectioning my hair in 3 parts. Used tshirt to scrunch. Diffused to 90% dry and didn’t touch it until I scrunched out the cast. I was just so excited and impressed by the formed clumps, better ringlets, increased shine, and how much softer and lighter my hair feels. Especially considering my new shampoo/conditioner is a FRACTION of the price of my old routine. And it’s a way easier routine! I just had to share this since most of what I learned came from recommendations of Reddit strangers. So thank you all! I currently have Not Your Mother's Naturals Weightless Hydration Shampoo & Conditioner in my online basket. Thinking about trying these as well. Let me know what else ya’ll love and use for volume on fine, curly hair! submitted by /u/GorillaBrilla to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Brands to avoid or aren't worth using?
It seems nowadays every other hair care brand, let alone curly hair brand, has altered their products in some way for the worse or simply aren't as good. Which ones are worth using nowadays? I know there's a lot of discussion around specific ingredients but I also know that's a lot more nuanced and has many answers, but that's not really what I'm talking about. Mostly brand reliability, quality, or effectiveness. submitted by /u/TimidMeudwy to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Update: you guys were right, my hair is not ugly, it’s just curly.
So I made a post about how I think my hair is just naturally ugly. Most people in the comments said I should try the curly method so I kinda did with the products I already had cause I was a bit skeptical. I just scrunched it with a leave in conditioner for dry hair and it got immediately curly/wavy. I think the reason I never considered the possibility of being curly is because I never had the same curls as my brother, so my mom just assumed my hair was straight as hers and we just kept styling it like that forever (I’m latina by the way, so the possibility of having curly hair is high in my case). Not sure how to deal with the roots of my hair tho, cause they keep looking straight, so any advice is welcome. Anyways, thank you for all the advice and compliments I received in my last post, they were very insightful and helpful. submitted by /u/bennuski to r/Haircare [link] [comments]

I had to prove to my curly haired son that bonnets at night are essential. He refuses to wear one. Any suggestions for a sleep cap for 16 year old boy that doesn’t look like an “Auntie”?
Please be kind these were taken right after I woke up and I don’t have my face on. lol The frizzy hair is my hair just washed/conditioned and no product. (My son’s current routine) The other picture is when I “set” my hair at night. It has not been styled or the cast from products broken in the picture. I had just woke up. I wash/conditioned with Inner Sense Products. I apply Inner Sense i create volume lotion to wet hair mist with Bumble and Bumble invisible oil for heat protection. I sit under a hooded dryer (Hot and Gold stand dryer). I wrap my hair in a silk scarf at night and break that cast on my hair with a little Pattern Argon oil in the morning. submitted by /u/Throwawayexjw07 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

curly hairstylist cut my hair too short :(
The first and third pics are before my trims and the second and fourth pics are after. (First and second pic is now, just got my trim yesterday.) I’m extremely upset, I don’t know how I haven’t noticed it in the past that she would cut way more than just a small trim. I specifically told her I just want a trim and I’m trying to grow out my hair and layers. Especially this time, my hair seems significantly shorter, I do have layers so she did have to trim them too, so maybe this is an accurate trim with layers? She cuts my hair wet, and sometimes I feel as if she doesn’t realize how much my hair curls up since my hair is bone straight wet. Please, someone tell me I’m not crazy, for thinking this is more than a trim, I’ve been going to her for 6 years, and I feel like the more years have passed she’s gotten less and less humble, she even told me the products I use CurlSmith is bad for my hair and causing my split ends, and I need to use HER products. I’m someone who gets split ends easily and need trims and I’d like to start cutting my own hair because I just don’t trust anyone given she’s the only curly hairstylist in my location and pretty expensive? Any advice would be appreciated! Any tips and tricks to how to trim curly hair that’s in layers? Or video tutorials I could start at? Product routine: I use CurlSmith hold me softly style balm and CurlSmith curl defining styling soufflé and airdry. submitted by /u/jayove to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

My hair stopped being curly, help!
Hi! I naturally have rather curly hair, I'm mixed race and it's just something that I didn't have to put that much effort into before but this year after getting a haircut (first a mullet then short in an attempt to fix it) it just completely stopped being curly. I didn't rly change anything in my routine, I used to use a professional shampoo and leave in conditioner for dry hair from Alfaparf (I basically only used those 2 products in the curly hair pictures from around 2 years ago [shorter is from May, the longer from September]) and now I use the same conditioner as well as nourishing hair masks and trying to save it somehow I put a curling cream and a styling paste in my hair before I defuse it so it has any kind of shape and form to it cause otherwise it would be a straight on flat helmet (which is what I have when i stay home cause then i only condition and use a hairmask).Does anyone have any idea what mightve caused this? I really want my hair to be curly again, I already can't believe I got married with my hair looking like this. submitted by /u/FringiIIa to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

tired of people saying they wish they had curly hair
seriously. because no TF you dont. they have NO idea how much it costs financially, physically, and emotionally to have curls. especially mixed ethnicity curls. financially: i spend between $150-$200 a month on just hair care and styling products, that dont even last more than 3-4 months. and since hair type and hair porosity can change depending on weather and location, products i use change consistently. physically: the knots are terrible and painful. humidity makes it frizzy, even with expensive product in it. and you have to use certain combs/brushes to make sure you don't break your curls. emotionally: growing up we hear that our curls are "unprofessional" and "unruly" and "wild" and "dirty" and "nappy" and "frizzy"(even when it's not). it takes a great toll on our self esteem. and my favorite thing that everyone says: "yOu DoNt EvEn HaVe To sTyLe iT" 🙄 like, oh really?? then who TF do you think is using all that Eco gel??😒 edit: never said i wanted straight hair. boring. i love my curls, i just wish people would stop acting like they're naturally flawless edit 2: i didn't mean to offend anyone with straight hair. i meant that it looks boring on me personally. i have a round face and stick straight hair makes me look plain after edit 3: i have 3b-3c hair that falls to my hips (im 5"4). its a lot of fucking hair, therefore i need to use a lot of fucking product. submitted by /u/green-fae to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]
