I think it's time to launch a class action lawsuit against DataAnnotation.tech for harvesting user data and other deceptive practices.
I've known about this company for 4 years now. Against my better judgement, I applied last week. Lo' and behold, I "failed" the starter assessment. Let me assure you that this is a statistical impossibility. I score 155 on IQ tests and have a high proficiency in English. You can tell just from the way I write that there is a structure and elegance to my thought process that far surpasses that of the average person. Any AI annotation company would be clamping at the bit to have me as an evaluator. That is - IF - these companies actually value an intelligent and competent annotator. It's clear they *don't*. Just take one look at the DA subreddit. Yikes. No, it's clear that the entirety of their business relies on *data harvesting* the millions of applicants they get each year. It's about time a class action lawsuit is filed. The amount of horror stories I've read from this company is startling. If you are thinking of applying, I strongly encourage you not to. Do NOT give them your name, location, phone number, LinkedIn profile, ID, resume, and complete psychoanalytical profile by doing their "assessments". Trust pilot has over 20% 1 star reviews calling this company a scam and it's not without reason. Stay away! submitted by /u/DarkSaturnPrince to r/WFHJobs [link] [comments]

My honest “two cents” after 3 (nearly) years in data annotation/LLM training work
Hi people, So this is my overall two cents because I constantly see people asking the same questions here. Do with it what you will. Also, people with actual concrete knowledge and experience, please feel free to add or correct things. I’ve worked across multiple data annotation platforms for around 3 years (early 2024 was my first project) now. Mind you, I have literally done $0/hr work before because one company claimed the product was “not in production stage yet” lol. So yes, this industry is very much the wild west. I’m posting this specifically here because Mercor seems to be one of the biggest and most discussed platforms currently. First things first: yes, this industry is biased (not in a way you think). Most hiring managers strongly prefer EN-speaking locales unless the project specifically requires niche non-English languages. But the messed up part is that many so-called “non-EN” countries have massive populations where English is effectively their primary working language across education, work, and day-to-day thinking. Yet people still get filtered differently because of geography alone. I’ve seen people being forcefully routed into multilingual projects purely because of region, even when the only language they are professionally comfortable working in is English. The pay, project stability, and hiring cycles are all over the place. Nothing is guaranteed. If you land a contract, grab it immediately, finish onboarding ASAP, and try to get some work hours in fast because competition is insane now compared to 2020-2022. In 2026, literally everyone knows about AI training work now. Even school graduates are entering & saturating the space heavily. And yes, companies absolutely overhire, remove people quickly, then rehire again. That cycle is extremely common. Many times entire datasets go bad, quality collapses, and they restart hiring for the same project again. A lot of instructions will contradict themselves and make zero sense. You still have to stay transparent and honest because if you slip up, they now have a valid reason to remove you. Whether the same transparency is reciprocated from the other side? Usually not. A huge amount of decision-making is automated. Despite all the “humans train AI” messaging, a lot of task reviews, routing, moderation, and support systems are heavily dependent on automation and AI-assisted filtering. Yes, some tasks go through manual QA pipelines, but usually only selected samples or edge cases. Entry-level reviews and most moderation decisions are rarely deeply investigated manually. Support systems are also increasingly barricaded behind AI. For basic issues, fine, AI support works alright. But even many edge cases are now being handled through automated systems. Sad, but that’s the reality. Do not expect stability. Seriously, do not emotionally rely on any project just because things were going well for a few days or weeks. I’ve personally had my heart broken way too many times to tell you otherwise. Also accept that probably 70-80% of your queries may remain unanswered because many answers would reveal too much about internal systems, workflows, moderation logic, or operational structures companies do not want openly discussed. Document absolutely everything. Keep screenshots of bugs, errors, timestamps, project changes, and communications. Always escalate issues formally when possible because even if it never reaches proper human review, you at least create a record. And yes, mainstream generalist LLM training has mostly peaked now. Companies already trained systems on absurd amounts of data over the past few years. Most current hiring is slowly or already have shifted toward domain-specific expertise, technical backgrounds, STEM fields, specialised research knowledge, and niche professional skillsets. Ironically, I’ve seen highly skilled corporate professionals struggle to land projects while random EN-locale freshers get onboarded instantly. Early-stage AI training heavily relied on mass-scale beginner labour, but that phase is slowing down now. So keep upskilling. Reskill constantly. Tailor your résumé. Keep tweaking your Mercor profile and LinkedIn regularly. Search aggressively because many listings do not even show up properly unless you dig for them manually. And lastly: no matter how experienced, niche, diligent, or high-performing you are, nobody is immune here. That’s just the nature of this industry currently. submitted by /u/GODISABOTTOM to r/mercor_ai [link] [comments]

Fired from DataAnnotation just 4 days after getting accepted??
Edit: Looks like it was a temporary bug. I have access to the main dashboard again. Four days ago, I received the email indicating that I passed the initial qualifications/exams, verified my identity without any issues, and got sent to the dashboard where a single task was visible. I've been quite busy this past week so I held off on the task, not expecting it to be an issue since DataAnnotation doesn't have minimum work requirements. Just now, I revisited the site and realized that I've been booted back to the worker onboarding page (https://app.dataannotation.tech/workers/onboarding), with the "Up next: we review your results — if you pass, we'll email you" and everything beyond it unchecked once again. I did contact support, but I've seen from a multitude of other posts that DataAnnotation basically never responds. Has anyone else ever experienced this before? Did I get fired... already? Was it because I held off on the task (though this confuses me since DataAnnotation doesn't have minimum work requirements, perhaps a month or year of inactivity would be an issue but I never expected 4 days to be enough to get booted), or is this more likely a strange bug on DataAnnotation's end? submitted by /u/doghutt to r/WFHJobs [link] [comments]

Data Annotation: Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back
I was on the Thanks for Completing Assessments page for a few days now after finishing both and verifying my ID. Then today I finally saw I got a task!!! It was a mythological project that had multiple tasks. So this afternoon, when I had time, I sat down to start it and suddenly, not only had it disappeared, but I was back to the timeline where they were reviewing my work. But I went through all that already and I completed the ID verifcation even though it shows the bubble empty/incomplete. Is this normal or is this a really bad sign? I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me. Thank you. submitted by /u/Rogue_Darkholme to r/WFHJobs [link] [comments]

My Experience With DataAnnotation
Hi everyone. I've been mostly lurking here for a while but wanted to share my experience with DataAnnotation. A few weeks ago, I was brought on as a generalist who had to provide input on LLM output from various prompts. One thing I read here is that only a small percentage of applicants are selected, so I was excited to clear the first hurdle. I will say that my onboard quiz was challenging and took a while to complete. I was immediately given a few basics tasks to complete and then after that more tasks were made available. What I quickly discovered is some of the tasks were beyond what I could do in a reasonable amount of time while others were fairly easy. Both tasks paid about the same, so I started to focus on the easy ones first. By the end of the day, I had completed a handful and reported my time. I have not had any tasks since that day. That may mean that I didn't make the cut or they simply don't have additional work at this time. Overall, I am really glad that I took a chance on DA and did find some of the tasks worth doing. The ones that were very complex did not pay enough (IMO) to justify the time needed for me to do them successfully. Someone who is extremely detail oriented and fast would probably disagree. I appreciated the fast that we had a variety of tasks to check out, so if ones were not a great fit, we could pass on them. I currently spend most of my time working on a project for Micro1. I will post about that later. submitted by /u/PresentationFancy712 to r/WFHJobs [link] [comments]

Data Annotation Tech- Some Advice
I posted this in some other threads, but just feel that I should make an original post to share a realistic view of this platform: I worked for Data Annotation Tech for about a month with Data Analysis type of projects and got some more responsibilities (started reviewing other people’s work). Suddenly, they permanently suspended my account saying that I “violated their code of conduct”. I emailed multiple times for clarification and still have gotten no response. I never embellished my hours worked and never shared anything about the projects I was working on. I was on holiday for 3 weeks and had a lot of free time so I worked a TON on the platform. I had about $3000 that I was getting ready to transfer into my PayPal and now that my account is permanently suspended, I can’t even access that money. So basically, my advice to those just starting out: please remember that this is very strictly volatile gig work and do not rely on it for anything. Make sure you have an actual job with benefits and some semblance of security. If you’re still a student like me, stay focused in your degree program and/or apply to internships to get real experience. Deepen your knowledge and skill set through certification programs and tech meetups. Data Annotation Tech is good until it isn’t. Use it to make extra money for savings, investments, spontaneous holidays, etc. But def not for rent, bills, food, prospects…lol just some advice! And ALWAYS transfer your pay immediately to your PayPal, get your hard-earned bread off of their platform. DA has weird Sam Bankman-Fried/ ftx-esque undertones. They don’t care, they let you do whatever you want, they don’t interact with you, you bask in autonomy, you’re given responsibilities you well-know you’re not nearly as qualified for, you’re overpaid for your experience, then suddenly it all crashes. They very subtly employ a psychological manipulation tactic used to make you feel so grateful for the “opportunity” to practice your programming skills while making $40+ an hour with so much creative freedom that you almost begin to feel the company is some kind of blessing. So you can never speak up against odd or weird behavior that you experience- because you should be so grateful to have this Godsend of a job (hard eye roll). The truth is, no job should ever feel like that. Even Google and Apple employees can respectfully admit that their companies have flaws and that their companies need them, not the other way around. DA feels too good to be true, because it is. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of their investments are in the form of weightless crypto…okay maybe I’m getting a little too conspiratorial here but I think you get my gist. Machine Learning is taking off exponentially and it’s the “in” thing right now. Literally every company is trying to carve their piece of this budding professional sector…some of these companies will most likely use unethical means to enter the industry and they will eventually collapse. I would not be remotely surprised if DA disappears and investors are left with unanswered emails and unreturned phone calls, just like the current gig workers who have been suddenly and irrationally permanently suspended from their platform. Also, to the weird cultish DA supporters: please save your ignorant comments about how I shouldn’t have left my money sitting on the platform and how I most likely did violate their code of conduct. Fact is, you don’t blame the robbed for the action of the robber. Also, any actual company would have a conversation with their employee if the code of conduct was “violated” instead of just locking the doors to the office. By the way, DA’s Code of Conduct is literally 3 paragraphs. You would have to be near illiterate to violate their Code of Conduct. Anyway, maybe I’m near illiterate, who knows. Well, lesson learned and I’m channeling the shock and trauma towards educating those in the community. Okay, I’m off my soapbox now Btw: This post got deleted from the r/dataannotation community by the moderator. That’s how they make sure only positive feedback is broadcasted there. Pathetic. submitted by /u/juststattingaround to r/WorkOnline [link] [comments]

Data annotation screen after Core test
I completed the Core test 4 days ago and had been on the “we review your results” section, but today it changed to this screen, which makes it seem like my test didn’t register? It now also says “Take one more test…” yet I do not know coding. Anyone else get this screen and go on to be accepted? Do I need to open and skip all the coding test questions to get the process to advance? submitted by /u/FoxyJayde to r/WFHJobs [link] [comments]
