This post ended up being longer than expected, so if you just want a summary there is a TL;DR at the bottom! For most of its run Miura inked Berserk traditionally using a G-pen, which for those who don’t know is a type of dip pen where the nib flexes, allowing for both thick and thin lines to be made depending on how much pressure is used. In his final three or so volumes (starting with Chapter 341 specifically) he switched to drawing digitally on a Wacom Cintiq Pro 32, a 32 inch 4K drawing tablet. The switch to digital allowed Miura to add an extreme amount of detail to each and every panel because it was now possible to zoom in very closely which obviously you can’t do with paper. And when I say very closely, that madman was zooming in on individual pixels apparently lmao. Just look at how detailed Griffith’s armour is in the bottom right of the digital Zodd panel even though it is extremely small on the page! I’d say the most noticeable change to the artstyle when he changed to digital though is just how much greyer everything looks. In manga the grey parts are actually tiny black dots called screentones which gives the illusion of it being grey, and traditionally they come in sheets which the artist sticks to the page and cuts to shape with a crafting knife. These sheets come as set levels of grey (so like 10%, 20%, etc.) and also gradients from one percentage to another, but this is quite limiting so Miura had to rely on his inkwork for most of the detail. However, when drawing digitally there are no such limitations and Miura was able to use a much fuller range of values, resulting in it looking more like a painting. Because of this his digital art tends to rely a lot more on the grey shading than the solid black inking, and this is purely a stylistic choice as his traditional style could be replicated digitally quite easily. As for which style I prefer, I feel like I’m one of the few people that thinks Miura’s digital art is some of the best Berserk has ever looked, but there are things I prefer about his old style. I love how detailed his digital art is and could literally stare at it all day, but while the digital grey shading can look really cool, I do think that all of the solid black and more extensive use of hatching in his traditional art gave it a lot of charm and more gritty feeling. I’d really liked to have seen a middle ground between the two styles, but unfortunately we will never get to see how Miura’s digital art would have continued to evolve. Interestingly though, while Studio Gaga’s art is still drawn digitally, they seem to be trying to emulate Miura’s traditional style much more than they are his digital style (as seen here in their drawings of the Berserker Armour and Zodd), and if I had to guess why it’s probably because there is significantly more of his traditional art to use as references. TL;DR: Miura’s digital art is extremely detailed because he could zoom in. He also relied more on the grey shading than the solid black inking because he had the freedom to use a much greater range of values. Studio Gaga seem to be going for a middle ground between the two styles? I know this is a VERY mean and fucked up thing to say but it’s very very frustrating. My art isn’t the best in the world, I’d say it’s pretty mediocre actually. But that being said people who are objectively less skilled seem to be drowning in comissions while I can’t even get one. I’m sure people will respond with something like “it’s your attitude!” Or “because you’re a bad person!”. But I am very kind to everyone when I speak to them. I would never tell someone I felt like this, because it 10000% isn’t their fault. This is just an inside thought that’s been really bothering me. Hence the anon account. (left img atomic shop, right img by me) The post about the WEST COAST SUMMER BUNDLE (and NCR TROOPER BUNDLE) being AI generated intrigued me as an artist... so I did a little investigating 🤓/ Original post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fo76/comments/1sc0s26/is_this_ai_or_am_i_crazy/ As seen in the second image attached, objects and figures are traced, cut, rotated and manipulated to fit together. Not entirely uncommon, especially if there's a deadline for the artist to meet 😯. In fact, the image itself may not even have been newly drawn but rather; cut and pieced together from existing art ✂️. I didn't look for the graphic of the drink or the Water Hole but you can see where the artist has improvised or relied on images. When photo-bashing, artists can run into trouble with perspective and that can give an uncanny effect; which may be why it appears AI generated 🤔. There's other evidence of resizing certain portions of the image -- which leaves pixelated distortions that are very evident once zoomed in 🔍. You can see this on both the drink and vault boys head and face. This can happen when the image is rotated or resized, as a result decreasing the smoothness between pixels if you do this repetitively. I didn't look into NCR TROOPER bundle as I didn't have the energy 🥴 but what it seems like to me is that there was a rush or lack of care in creating this image. I'm sure Bethesda and the those that are involved with the atomic shop might or may have already used AI generated content but I thought everyone's investment and speculation was very interesting. That said: this image... at least to me, is not AI 🤔 ...They really drew him with his dogs out. 🦶🦶 TLDR: I don't think the WEST COAST SUMMER BUNDLE art is AI generated. It's likely photo-bashed as can be seen in the second image. edit: I just realized the nipple may look that way due to the cutting and rotating of the arm from the original image! Hello, I'm a color pencil artist and I would say I have a decent understanding of color, lighting and anatomy when drawing on paper (swipe to see my traditional art) I'm not an expert by any means I definitely do understand things like exposure, color palette, directional lighting, texture, etc.. I've been trying to learn digital art for months and I feel like I'm getting nowhere with pointless studies and getting the colors and values wrong every time. It feels like all my knowledge of traditional art completely falls apart and even when trying to copy a reference 1 to 1, the results still end up disastrous. May I have some suggestions on how to get better? Currently I don't know: What brushes to even use (pen is too rigid, airbrush is too blurry and non-directional...) can't seem to find an in between that all landscape artists seem to use) How to select colors WITHOUT eye dropping from a reference. This is my biggest struggle. Am I supposed to come up with a color palette beforehand? Am I supposed to do a black-and-white study first to understand the values, before converting it to color? Or do I just need to get better at eyeballing the colors and getting it right on the first try? What should be the first practices as a beginner. Should I even be trying to tackle full landscape pieces like what I'm trying to do here? It feels really overwhelming but I'm also not sure what other studies I can fall back on.
