How do I prep hot peppers without disposable gloves?
Hi, I've been trying to eat healthy (arent we all) but have been contact-burning the crap put of my hands when dicing hot peppers. The general internet solution is "disposable gloves" but I really don't want to add so much waste. Ideally looking for ideas or tips, not products. context: I swear I wash my hands immediately after cutting them with warm soap and water. I've also tried putting aloe on asap but it doesn't really make a difference and ofc inhibits cooking. submitted by /u/Also_alarmedposition to r/Anticonsumption [link] [comments]

I've been to every country in South East Asia and I think Filipinos are the most hygienic
Particularly in food prep. Watching the 35 pesos buy 1 get 1 burger lady prepare burgers from start to finish not only without her disposable gloved hands ever touching any of the food, but also without her touching anything that touches the food in this fascinating juggling of a tong (never knew tongs could do so much), patties, buns, dispensers, toppings, knife, wrappers and finally, plastic bag...I realize that this is quite the anomalous prerogative in South East Asia. In every other South East Asian country (except for Singapore MAYBE and Brunei, which is similar to the Philippines), your food right before it's handed to you has, more often than not, been anointed with, at bare minimum, skin cells and money dust. In Vietnam it's common for your food to be handled bare hands by the same never washed hands that handle money and body fluids...aaachoo, cough, cough, scrrrt, scrrrt psssss... It's also very common for the chopsticks to be shared and never washed. They are just wiped between customers, by the customers themselves. In Indonesia it's very common for your utensils and plates to have been washed soap free from only being dunked in a bucket of water that's never changed all day, and your table wiped with the mop. In Thailand it's the cockroaches and pests on prep areas crawling over cutting boards, customers utensils, woks, and raw ingredients. And it's topped off by meats just sitting out there in the sun all day, uncovered absorbing all the vehicle fumes and nourishing all the flies in the neighborhood. This is even common in nicer restaurants and mall food courts like Terminal 21 in Bangkok where the utensils bucket will always be swarming with roaches. In Malaysia you'll be hard pressed not frequently seeing cockroaches, rats, and many flies in or near mamaks, kopitiams and hawker stalls...grimey floors, food scraps on the ground, and garbage or open drains in close proximity to where you eat. In Laos your food is guaranteed to have had been handled with bare hands that are never washed the entire shift and never seen the inside of gloves...that the same hands to handle money...that no food you'd buy be covered...and that flies would have sampled your food before you. Cambodia is remarkably clean compared to its counterparts. I've spent a lot of time between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and I don't remember not one time anything ever standing out unhygienically. But at the same time, I also can't remember anytime anything ever standing out hygienically. I guess unless you're actively trying to notice, you won't notice. Disposable gloves are definitely common and your food is also commonly not touched bare handed. Work stations are fairly clean, relatively. No visible trash, pests near food...etc. And food is almost always cooked fresh, so no food being left out. I'd place Cambodia right after the Philippines to be honest. Similar but definitely more noticeable oddities in the sense that people "generally" go a tad bit extra in the Philippines. There is however much more visible abject poverty in the Philippines, yet despite that, hygiene is maintained at a standard that is higher than the relative direness. So in a weird twist, instead of this point making the Philippines rank lower, it does the contrary when you compare it pound for pound (ONLY with Cambodia) just to break the tie. In Myanmar it's a hit and miss. Older folks will mostly not use gloves to handle your food...noodles scooped onto plates and toppings sprinkled on with bare hands wouldn't be a difficult sight to see. Younger folks, however, I've always seen wearing gloves. But my god is the food good! 🤤. I think Myanmar has the best food in South East Asia to be honest. There are just so many options, so many flavors and the street food life so robust. It's something you'll notice right away if you're coming to the Philippines immediately from having spent time around the other South East Asian countries. Filipinos are definitely, relatively, cleaner. I don't remember ever seeing people eating with disposable gloves anywhere else. In no other country have I seen food being served in a plate through a plastic bag. I don't think there is any country in the world at the same socioeconomic level as the Philippines that's more hygienic, from my experience. Love that about this place. submitted by /u/IntellectuallyDriven to r/Philippines_Expats [link] [comments]

My folks spilled mercury on the floor and vacuumed it up... How bad is it?
I am NOT the Original Poster. That k33ponkeepingon. They posted in r/CleaningTips Do NOT comment on Original Posts. Latest update is 7 days old. Original Post: June 6, 2025 Apparently stepfather decided that it would be a good idea to play with a small bottle of mercury and somehow spilled a few drops on the floor (About the same amount you would find in a thermometer, as I found out). The real problem is that they used a vacuum cleaner to clean it up. AFAIK coming into contact with it in liquid form is not a big deal but involving a vacuum cleaner changes everything. I told them to leave the room, open all the windows, and get rid of the vacuum cleaner bag immediately but they're entirely unconcerned. Aside from notifying authorities, what else can be done? How big is the risk and how serious was the exposure? Thanks in advance. Some of OOP's Comments: Commenter: The vacuum cleaner must be destroyed. It's contaminated Everything that touched the mercury, like towels or brooms, must also be thrown away Throw away everything it touched, unfortunately OOP: Thanks. Told them to do this. Got accused of blowing things out of proportion and being paranoid. I'll try again but not much I can do if they don't value their own lives I suppose🤷 Commenter: Why do they have mercury to begin with? OOP: Beats me. He hoards all sorts of garbage for no reason. He was never the sharpest tool in the shed but it got worse as he got older. Commenter: It sounds like this was significantly more than a thermometer’s worth of mercury. In which case hoovering was an exceptionally poor decision. The chemistry sub has lots of advice on this, but at the volume, I wouldn’t assume the risk was gone . How much was in the bottle ? (Volume ) , and I have to wonder what the reason for having it was OOP: Their description is "one, maybe two drops that were no bigger than a grain of rice". Not super helpful but could be worse I guess. Commenter: You’re downplaying it based on what they describe as small droplets, but vacuuming can cause them to create mercury vapour. Doesn’t matter if it’s small. [...] OOP: No downplay here. Just told you of their answer when I asked them how much was the spill. I'm fully aware how dangerous even a tiny droplet can be. Commenter: I broke my mercury thermometer during Covid. It was glass and on my bathroom counter, it rolled into the sink and the glass broke. It was about that amount. With the exhaust fan on, I put on nitrile gloves and wiped up the globs, wrapped the trash before disposing of it, and cleaned the sink. Then I died, this is my ghost. OOP: Worry not friendly ghost; I shall be joining you soon :) In response to a longer comment: I'm not in the USA but we do have a poison control hotline in our country. I called them and explained the situation. They advised to throw away anything that had come into contact with mercury, walk outside the house for 3-4 hours, and air out the house. I can't say I'm convinced, but this is how much they care🥲 Update Comment: 2 hours later Finally convinced them to call the authorities and make them get rid of the vacuum cleaner. Score one for me. Update (Same Post): June 7, 2025 (Next Day) Update: Side note: I'm not in the USA. So I drove over to their house and called the emergency line in my country. First the local security forces and health teams came. When I explained the incident they did not take it seriously. They gave me mocking looks and sarcastic smiles. "Dude, such a small amount, why make this fuss" etc. Then a team from an institution called Disaster and Emergency Directorate has come. This team cleaned up the remaining mercury with measuring devices and special equipment. They said I did the right thing by calling and congratulated me. They confirmed the ignorance of my family and the teams that came before them. Looks like everything that could be done, has been done. They told them to take a health test after some time. Fingers crossed that they will comply. Now another team from the Ministry of Environment is on its way to take the vacuum cleaner and other contaminated stuff. After everything he caused stepdouche (Chloe said it best) has the nerve to complain about the bill they will hand them because of me and cost of the vacuum cleaner. Told him to search "mercury poisoning" and check out some visuals to maybe get back on the right track. Thank you everyone. I think it's been an insightful post with good info and interesting stories. Upvote12KDownvote1.3KGo to commentsShare Editor's Note: A different user posted in the same subreddit about being a first responder with the EPA. (They said it was because of OOP's post) They were showing how dangerous mercury is. You can read it here submitted by /u/LucyAriaRose to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

Teacher applying sunscreen to young children at school- alternatives to using one disposable glove per child?
I hate this idea, I would gladly switch off with the other staff member and come inside to wash my hands after applying sunscreen to each child but I know my coworkers will not want to do this. Any ideas for more sustainable alternatives that would be acceptable? Thank you! Edit: they are too young to effectively spread their own sunscreen. I do believe that many of them can learn, but my director says the teachers need to do it to make sure. submitted by /u/happy_bluebird to r/ZeroWaste [link] [comments]

Banning plastic bags was the stupidest thing ever
In Canada they have banned plastic bags from shopping. Now every till charges you .50-1$ per bag and you end up with 5000 of them because you forget to grab your reusable bags once in a while or for a hurry. The plastic bags were PERFECT for around the house garbage. Bathroom garbages, perfect plastic grocery bag that I can easily ty up, now I have to buy the stupid glad white bags for 5$, when I had an infinite amount of free garbage grocery bags. There are still a million plastic bags in every single consumer product, but now we have to use bags that likely took 1000x more energy to make then a simple plastic bag. They were perfect for so many things, I literally never threw a grocery bag, perfect for picking up dog poo, using for bathroom garbages, perfect for dirty diaper bags to quickly toss out, perfect for swim bags you could just toss when they stunk of pool water, perfect for disposable garbage bags to put in your glove box for road trips. Banning plastic bags was stupid, im buying plastic bags for everything I used to use anyways. People still litter all their trash and plastic cups I miss my bags submitted by /u/KifDawg to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Would it be weird for me, a young man, to buy tampons for my house or car
I (21M) have recently had a few situations where some of my female friends have had the need for tampons and had none at their disposal. In these situations they were separate friends but both in my car and I felt bad for not being able to help. I am at the local Walmart now and wondering if it would be weird for me to buy tampons to keep in my car just as an emergency thing for other people. My immediate thought was no that would be weird, then I began to reason that it would probably be much more helpful than weird and I’m always looking to be of help to anyone especially my friends. NOW however I’m having doubts when it comes to how it could be weird even in the situation, offering: “I have a tampon.” And if someone were to see them in my glove compartment or wherever I would have to explain the whole dilemma. Let me know I’d love to hear your opinions. A few specific questions I have for the women: Would you be weirded out if you asked the women around you for a tampon and a guy offered one? Would it be weird to open a male friends glove compartment and see tampons? Is it worth the questioning and explaining to have a tampon? What do I tell my mom? AITA for telling my 19yo daughter that she’ll pay the plumbing bill - if required - for continuing to flush her tampons in our house?
My (54M) daughter (19F) is living with me this summer before heading to college later this month. She spent the majority of her middle and high school years at her moms due to divorce custody arrangements. My daughter had knee surgery at the end of July to fix a torn ACL. As a result, I’ve been with her a lot helping her recover (food, icing, transportation, etc). Last week, I noticed in the hallway bathroom that she uses, that there were tampon “covers/wraps ” (I don’t know the official name). The next time I checked on her I asked her to confirm that she was throwing her tampons away and not flushing them. She said No, they get flushed down the toilet. She said I should be kind of embarrassed that I have a 19yo daughter and don’t even realize that. I told her No they don’t. I reminded her of all the doctor office and hospital bathrooms where reminder notes are left asking women not to flush their feminine hygiene products. At the same time as I said that, she finished looking on her phone and I could tell she found information on-line that confirmed the garbage is the correct disposal method. I asked her to please use the garbage from now on. Later that night, I sent her two different Internet searches, confirming not to put tampons down the toilet, and instead to put them in the garbage. Several days later, when I was checking on her, I asked her if she was using the garbage for her tampons. She said No. I reminded her what we talked about and what I had asked her to do. She said I didn’t understand, since I was a man. I told her, yes, I am a man and yes, I don’t understand. However, millions of American women have figured it out. I asked her if she had googled how to dispose of bloody tampons? She said I’m not going to Google that. I asked her if she had thought about using plastic bags to wrap her tampons in, or using something like that. She said again that I wouldn’t understand what it’s like to dispose of a bloody tampon. I agreed with her again. I said it sounds like you are not willing to try or learn something new in order to do it differently. I told her if that was the case then she could pay the plumber bill if I ever needed to call the plumber to come fix a clogged drain line due to a tampon. She basically gave up and said Fine. As I was leaving she said that I was being “just like mom”. AITA? PS - I know how this sub works, so expecting some questions. I’m driving for the next four hours and won’t be able to reply until much later. Judge away! Edit 1 - stopped at Pilot rest stop. Going to respond to just a few questions In the USA There is a garbage can in bathroom. Directly underneath the toilet paper (both in arms reach of the toilet) No lid on trash can. Thanks for suggesting. Edit 2 - when my daughter says I’m just like her mother, I think that is meant to be a “you’ve said the rule and regardless of what I say you aren’t going to change your mind. You won’t listen to me and change your view” Also, I think her issue with me is that I couldn’t understand what it’s like to deal with the bloody tampon since I’m a man. Edit 3 - Thanks for all the input! I'll ask my daughter about a covered garbage can in the bathroom as well as gloves and/or small plastic bags. No dogs in the house. submitted by /u/ericskeith5 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
