Bathtub slow drains... Help?
I recently moved into the basement of a friend's home. They recently kicked someone out. That person shaved their hair (entire head) in the shower multiple times throughout their stay. Homeowner had tried Draino a few times. I tried to snake the drain but the snake doesn't fit very well in the rusty narrow drain. I tried to go through the... I'm not sure what the technical term is... overflow drain... but it did me no good. I'm hoping to fix it so we (my kids and I) can use this bath rather than hers. Any insights from professionals or those who have dealt with this appreciated. Located in Midwest. Landlord is retaliating so I'm retaliating harder
UPDATE POSTED!!! TLDR; My slummy landlord has a distaste for me due to demanding that I have running water (I know, crazy) and threatening to escrow my rent until repair was made. She's retaliating with made up issues and left a notice to vacate or rectify said issues that DONT EXIST within 30 days, so I moved out, left all the things I didn't want to deal with and I'm not telling her until the day before rent is due. Ok so I had a plumbing issue for months that started when I was having a miscarriage. I knew it was a very expensive repair. Ultimately nothing was done until I had literal shit coming up into my bathtub. I threatened escrow twice because of the plumbing and that's how I got the "repair" done. We have quarterly inspections where they come look at the place and are supposed to change the furnace filter as it says in the MANDATORY resident benefits portion of my lease... that I pay $25 a month for. The property manager is a bitch. Very slummy company, and the ways she's spoken to me are horrendous. Anyway she came by for inspection, took photos, didn't change the filter (lol). She then put a notice on my NEIGHBORS door with his address ((srsly how dumb can you be?)) that was meant for my fiancé and I, and we must vacate or rectify the following: "Seems to be unauthorized pets" nope. I paid a non refundable deposit for my 2 dogs. "Excessive amount of dog feces" also no. We share a townhouse and are very diligent with picking up after our dogs. And lastly, "a strong pet odor". Which is odd because she complimented how good the place smelled as I was cooking when she came for inspection. Our dogs rarely have accidents, and if they do, they're promptly cleaned up. I know they don't like me because I refuse to let them walk all over me. I've been very persistent and vocal about (reasonable) issues being fixed. I can't fix their imaginary problems, I assume they were wanting us to pay Aprils rent and were planning to try and evict us anyway after 30 days. So I took rent money, bought a fifth wheel camper and moved out. I'm not letting them know we left until the day before rent is due, and I'm also leaving a bunch of furniture and shit I don't want for them to deal with because I KNOW I'm not getting my deposit back and I wanna make sure it goes to good use. Oops I have a passive aggressive email ready to send when it's time. Ultimately I tell them I can't fix imaginary issues so we're leaving, and thank them for a legal way out of this lease because we'd already been wanting to break it. The place sucks, and it's in a REALLY rough part of Dayton, OH. We were great tenants. Rent was always early/on time and the only wave I ever caused was telling them to stop fucking snaking the drain when the whole line is busted and I was right. That's apparently a very expensive repair. Oh well. Place has to have running water to be habitable. Shit coming up into my bathtub is a literal biohazard. Like, wtf would you do if that were your place? Anyway they have virtually no employees or maintenance crew and it feels really good to know they'll be scrambling to get our stuff out of there. submitted by /u/Jadelovessky25 to r/traumatizeThemBack [link] [comments]

What is a good quality disposable drain snake
So my bathtub drain tends to get clogged (really slow drain) every now and then between my hair and the soap I use (it never did honestly until I started using bar soap and then between soap residue and my hair it gets clogged up from time to time). I bought disposable drain snakes (The orange types with lots of "thorns") and they were fine but at one point for whatever reason the sludge really locked in my drain and I had to get my husband's help opening the drain up to use the snake as I'm an utter weakling think I get him to open up jars for me sometimes too lol. Well, when he tried to unclog it he complained to me to not use such cheap ones again (he showed me it almost broken and said that would be worse than the clog). I don't remember what brand I got but I am wondering if anyone has a specific recommendation for better quality ones that might not break so easily. I would much prefer disposable cause I'm kinda ocd and I can't think of anywhere I'd like to store a used drain snake (eww). submitted by /u/tigress666 to r/Plumbing [link] [comments]

My mother always warned me never to put my ear to the bathtub drain. Now I know why.
Looking back, it was such a strange thing to warn me against. What rational person would think to put their ear to the bathtub drain? Now, I understand. Kids aren’t rational. And being the curious child I was, something like that wasn’t out of the cards. But, naturally, Mom’s repeated warnings only made me want to try it. I asked her about it a lot, but each time she would always give me the same answer. “Because the boogeyman will reach up and grab you.” I never believed in the boogeyman, but as a child, the thought of a gnarled, green hand snaking through the drain pipes to strangle me was too frightening to ignore. But as the years progressed, I got bolder. I stopped being afraid of the thing in the drain. That was my biggest mistake. Humans have fear for a reason. Fear keeps us alive. I should have given in to fear that day. Maybe if I had, none of this would be happening. *** I was eight years old when I found myself sitting there watching the water swirl down the drain. I was about to get out of the tub, but something stopped me. I don’t know what it was. A feeling, an urge, I’m not sure. But something told me to stay where I was. I stared at the drain, my mother’s words blaring in my head. Do not press your ear to the bathtub drain under any circumstances. Ever. The rebel in me knew what I had to do. I crawled up to the drain, dread gnawing at my insides. What was going to happen if I did this? Was Mom going to find out? I had to know. The only audible noises were the sounds of my dripping hair and my ragged breathing as I lowered my head to the drain. I pressed my ear against it, heart thundering in my chest. I didn’t expect anything to happen. But something did. “Hello?” A voice shattered the silence. I instinctively flew back, narrowly missing the faucet. I stared at the drain, waiting for something to happen. Hoping against all odds that nothing would. But then it returned. “Hello? Is someone there?” The voice was soft and quiet, barely above a whisper. But I heard it loud and clear. I was suddenly gripped by a cocktail of fascination and deep-seated terror. Though my brain screamed at me to leave, my curiosity won out. I crawled back to the drain and stared down the hole. It was pitch black. Endless in my child imagination. But otherwise non-threatening. “H-hello?” I called, my voice trembling. “Hi. What’s your name?” I hesitated. Was this okay? “I’m Allie... What’s yours?” “My name is Lillian.” There was a pause, tension seeping into the atmosphere. “Can I ask you something?” I said, throwing a quick glance to the door. “Sure.” “Why are you in my bathtub drain?” Lillian took a while to respond. I thought I might have made her angry. “I’m trapped in here.” My heart broke for her. There was another girl just like me stuck on the other end of the pipes. She must have been so scared. “Can I get you out?” Another pause. “No. Not yet.” Mom’s footsteps outside the door made me freeze. “Allie? What’s taking so long in there? Dinner’s almost ready!” “I’m drying off!” I turned back to the drain. “I gotta go. See you later,” I whispered. Lillian didn’t reply. *** The next day, I again found myself in the bath. I hurried through my routine, washing up as fast as I could. Once the last of the water was gone, I pressed my ear to the drain. “Hello?” I said, blood pounding in my ears. “Hi Allie.” Part of me was relieved. A smaller part of me, the one that told me Mom was right, was terrified. I tried to find the words, but it was difficult. What do you even say to a voice in your bathtub drain? I didn’t have to find the answer. Lillian spoke first. “Is your Mommy gone?” “Yeah.” “Good. She scares me.” “She scares me too sometimes. Why doesn’t she want me to talk to you?” Lillian paused. “I don’t know.” “Oh. So… what’s it like in there? Is it dark?” “Yeah. It’s really dark. All the time. There’s a little light that comes down, though. I can see you, but you’re really far away.” My breath hitched in my throat. Something about that unsettled me. I peered into the hole, trying to make out any discernable features, but I couldn’t see a thing. “I can’t see you. I-” Mom threw the door open, a stack of towels in her hand. She locked eyes with me before placing the towels on the sink and marching over. “Allie, please, please tell me this isn’t what I think it is. Tell me you didn’t press your ear to the drain.” I snatched the towel I’d placed by the tub and scrambled to wrap myself up. “I didn’t! Uh.. some of my nail polish chipped off and I was washing it down there.” Mom’s shoulders loosened and I gave myself a pat on the back for my quick thinking. “Okay. It’s very important that you never put your ear to the drain. You know what will happen if you do.” I nodded before brushing past her and locking myself in my room. *** Despite Mom’s wishes, I spoke to Lillian every night. After my close encounter, I made sure to lock the bathroom door. I began to feel a sense of kinship with her. We were becoming fast friends. I found that I was looking forward to our nightly talks. Until one night when Lillian didn’t respond. Two nights went by. Then three. I was beginning to think that I had just imagined her. But then she returned. “Hello?” I whispered, my breath hitched. I didn’t expect a response, but that didn’t stop me from hoping for one. “Hi Allie.” “Lillian! Where’d you go?” “I… went to the bad place… But I’m back now. Guess what?” My brows furrowed. The bad place? Lillian had never mentioned that before. I decided that it could wait. “What?” “I think I found a way to get out of your drain!” “Really?! How??” My heart pounded. Lillian sounded as excited as I was. “Come closer,” she whispered. I knelt down, my face inches from the drain. “Good. Now open your mouth.” “What? Why?” “Just do it.” A sense of dread nestled in my stomach. Something didn’t feel right. But nevertheless, I did as I was told. The moment I opened my mouth, something wet and slimy rocketed down my throat. I instantly pulled back, thrashing and kicking in the tub. I tried to scream, but the thing shooting from the drain blocked my airways. It looked like hair… A mess of black, soggy strands coated in grime. I tried to yank the thing out of my mouth. My hands squished the stringy mass, and I pulled with all my might. It wouldn’t budge. In fact, it managed to slither even deeper down my throat. My vision began to grow fuzzy and I felt my body getting weaker. The thing was cutting off my oxygen supply. I was suffocating. In a matter of seconds, I slumped back into the tub and everything went black. The next moments I could recall felt like a slideshow. First, an image of Mom screaming. Next, I was tied to my bed, constraints binding my hands and feet. Then Mom and a priest stood over me, splashing water into my face. It seemed like nothing more than a dream. But when I finally came to - really came to - I was certain that every bit of it was real. Because the rope burns around my wrists were still there. *** Mom had always told me that the exorcism was successful. That they had fully eradicated the demon I’d known as Lillian. But now, I’m not so sure… It’s been fifteen years since the night I first put my ear to that bathtub drain. Recently, I’ve been experiencing random bouts of memory loss. Large chunks of time that are unaccounted for. I visited the doctor, afraid that it might be some kind of medical condition. He was stumped. But I think I know what’s causing this. The exorcism wasn’t a complete success. Lillian was just lying dormant. Until now. NS Post submitted by /u/HorrorJunkie123 to r/HorrorJunkie123 [link] [comments]

Bought an endoscope, used a hook attachment to remove a clog, and now it’s stuck.
Yall, I messed up BAD. I bought an endoscope because I’ve tried everything to get this clog out and nothing is budging so I just wanted to see what it was. I got the camera deep enough to see the clog, and “oh cool, it came with a hook to grab stuff” and I tried it. Now the endoscope is stuck. It’s hard to tell what’s going on, the hook itself isn’t stuck, but where the hook attaches to the camera is catching on something. I’m at a loss for what to do, we’ve tried twisting with our hands but it’s not turning, I tried a drain snake to maybe dislodge it, I don’t know what else to do? ETA: TO ANYONE FOLLOWING. I GOT IT OUT!! I used several suggestions of people saying to try the drain snake again, and I did! I made a lot of noise at 12am but WE GOT IT OUT OF THR BATHTUB FOLKS!!! ETA 2: I am totally in love with everyone’s comments, as soon as I get this clog out of the drain I will update yall! To briefly answer some questions; It seems like the clog is made of hair, I and my husband have long hair that sheds like a dog, we tried draino in the past and was told it wasn’t good for the pipes so we stopped using that. I will be trying the hot water method, and if that fails, the shop vac method! It is imperative that the pipe remain unharmed! 😂 submitted by /u/ThrowRASchnauzerMom to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Drain auger, snake. Getting past the tee in the bath tub.(Urgent)
I have a bathtub drain blockage problem. I am trying a drain manual drum auger, 1/4". The snake goes in from the overflow drain opening, but gets stuck at the connection point to the bathtub drain. I am assuming a tee. Why is the snake favoring to change direction and go sideways instead of continuing down, and what is a reliable way to get it past that point? Notes: This was after trying chemicals. This was after plunging with the overflow drain blocked. The bathtub has no built in stopper. I did not fully remove the white plastic grill behind the overflow metal looking cover. The white plastic grill appears "glued" to the bathtub. I wish to cause no damage. I passed the snake through one of its four holes I visually confirmed the snake entering the pipe of the bathtub floor drain. I am thinking a horizontal pipe. submitted by /u/ce3_m to r/Plumbing [link] [comments]

Slow Draining Bathtub: Snake feels like it hit a wall
Have a tub that drains but takes about 10 minutes to clear ankle deep water. Used use drain wrench to open it up but there isn't much room to snake anything. Can fit a coat hanger or a small flat piece of metal through a very tiny opening but that's it. Moved on to removing the stopper and going in that way but it feels like the snake hits a dead end after only a foot or two. Used my Insta360 action camera and some decorative lights to get a look down the drain but can't see what the issue might be. Could the p-trap maybe take a hard turn I don't know about? submitted by /u/BigRedFury to r/askaplumber [link] [comments]

CANNOT get rid of bathtub drain smell for the life of me!
I’m renting a prewar apartment in NYC and the bathtub drain has this very unpleasant odor that wafts into the whole bathroom. It’s worse at some times of days vs others. I don’t know how to explain the smell. I don’t think it’s sewage? But maybe. It’s like…moldy chlorine. Metallic and very musty. Things I’ve tried: Baking soda + vinegar Hydrogen peroxide (and some baking soda) Green goblin Enzyme cleaner (multiple rounds) Drain snake (couldn’t get it down very far at all though) I’ve done all this on both the bathtub drain and the overflow valve area. The shower drain and sink in the bathroom don’t smell. Though when I turn on the shower, I’ve noticed steam comes out through the tub drain. I don’t want to try drain-o because I heard it’s bad for prewar pipes. I asked the plumber who does repairs in our building, and he just said to pour bleach down it, which I already know isn’t good advice. Any help greatly appreciated! submitted by /u/djk865 to r/Plumbing [link] [comments]

Help - Crayons stuck in bathtub drain
4 of my kid‘s bathtub crayons (red for reference) went down the drain. EDIT: The crayons are in a plastic tube, thank you for your suggestions but please stop suggesting to melt them. They’re sitting in the pipe about 2 - 3” after the drain elbow. So far i’ve tried: A whole chopstick a broken chopstick a bent paper clip bent tip tweezers a plastic drain snake a drain snake with claw a child’s hand pleading EDIT: Shop vac coat hanger cursing endoscope plunger I got two of them out mostly just reaching in with a finger but now I can’t get any grip or angle on the last two. I imagine there’s some ask plumbers subreddit but I thought I’d get more commiseration here. Any ideas?? submitted by /u/IaAranaDiscotecaPOL to r/daddit [link] [comments]

NYC Bathtub not draining. Snaked and 20psi air pressure applied by plumber - STILL NOT DRAINING
Hi I have a bathtub in the main bathroom in my condo that WONT DRAIN. I tried: plunging, snaking, GLUG, Plumber tried: 100ft snake thru the adjacent sink, thru the overflow valve, even tried thru the actual drain which has a protector on it. 20psi from an Air Ram device directly to the drain - nothing. Plumber gave up. Called someone highly qualified and they suggested to wait until it warms up in case something is frozen. Now we had a freezing issue here exactly in this spot before but the exterior wall was insulated and roof of the garage as well and it’s been 8 years and some harsh winters and it never froze. we live in NYC and it’s been extra cold here the last week. This tub is primarily for my kids to bathe in. No they couldn’t stick anything down there it’s double protected and their toy selection in the bathroom is limited. Any help would be greatly appreciated submitted by /u/Comfortable_Look_662 to r/Plumbing [link] [comments]

Avoid "snake" drain for the bathtub group
From left to right, placed fixtures: washer, lav, toilet, and the bathtub. Added a two-way cleanout right before the main sewer line enters the room (accessible crawl space). The slope along the wall is consistent (1/4" per foot) and gives enough clearance to install the 2x6s perpendicular to the long wall. What options do I have to simplify the bathtub drain and vent? UPDATE. Thanks, everyone. I simplified the layout, the photo is in one of the comments. I used the "snake" branch for the toilet, slightly offsetting it with two 22.5s to move it a little farther from the wall. The toilet's vent goes in the same bay as the washer's, with a WYE + 45 angled at 45 degrees towards the wall - after the horizontal WYE + 45 near the main sewer line entrance. The bathtub is on the long 3" branch with its own vent as well. I'll add a cleanout and hide behind a service panel. I'll also add some support blocks besides the steel hangers and as long as I have built a false wall already, I'll run the horizontal vent header (at around 60") between the exterior and false walls (slightly offsetting stacks with 22.5s). Hope this helps someone. submitted by /u/Legitimate-Fault-170 to r/askaplumber [link] [comments]

Can’t snake bathtub drain
My bathtub drain is pictured. I know there is hair down there because it keeps clogging. I removed some of it with tweezers because the drain snaking stick won’t go in past a half inch. I do use a drain cover that catches most of the hair. The holes are so small, so I don’t know how the hair is getting through. The drain cover is the second photo. How do I unclog a drain like this? I haven’t tried Draino yet but I haven’t had luck in the past with Draino and drains clogged by hair. Thank you. submitted by /u/Never-Ending-77 to r/handyman [link] [comments]

How the heck do I snake this drain?
I rent a house, and am responsible for covering the cost of fixing any drain clogs within the bounds of the structure. One of the bathtubs has always drained very slowly and now it's stopped draining at all. I'd much prefer to fix it myself because I just lost my job, so I took off the little grate, ready to run a snake down the drain, and was met by this god forsaken thing. It doesn't seem like it can be casually removed and I can't find a snake that can fit past it. Is there a way to get that thing off and I'm just missing it? How the heck do I snake this drain? Thanks in advance for your advice! submitted by /u/NaDarach to r/Plumbing [link] [comments]

My father got a snake stuck in the tub drain
Hey guys, so our bathtub has been draining super slow. We got a snake to try and fix it, but it got stuck. No matter how soft or hard we pulled, twisting it clock and counter clockwise, it wouldn’t come back out. In hindsight, we looked and saw that we should’ve done it through the overflow and we know for next time. But it ended up breaking and now we’re stuck (literally) with a broken snake that won’t come out. Any advice? submitted by /u/Flat_Championship495 to r/askaplumber [link] [comments]

The bathtub not draining for months
The first few clips are from January 2024. She says that bathtub won't drain and they have to empty it out after everyone's shower. She says the bathtub water backs up overnight into the tub. She said in January that this had been going on for 6 to 7 months. If the bath stopper was left open a horrible smell would come out of it. It seems like the other sinks and toilets in the apartment drained fine so I would at least try to snake the tub. I don't know if she really complained to the landlord about the issue because that could cause problems for them if the landlord found out how many people were living in the apartment. In several old videos she's mentioned that Sunday is bath day for the kids. The second to last clip you can see Milo in the bottom left corner missing some fur. And in the last clip she's upset at the damage to her hair from the ongoing lice they had over the summer of 2024. It just makes me think of the unsanitary living conditions these kids had to live in for over a year. Lice and flea infestation and who knows how often they got baths/ showers. I feel so bad for those kids. submitted by /u/keeeeeeeeeeeeeeb to r/resilientjenkinsnark [link] [comments]

How to get drain auger snake out of bathtub drain? I might have put it in too far, and now I don't have the leverage to take it out.
Title. My bathtub was clogged, and I bought one of those drain augers, and I was putting it in more and more and twisting the snake in, but I put it in too far and now it looks like it's stuck in there. I don't know how to get it out. I tried to use the auger spinner, but I don't have leverage because the snake needs to be out by like 2 or 3 times the amount it currently is. Last picture shows how much I can pull it out currently. I live in an old building. I'm not sure if I can talk to the building people to let me see where the pipes lead. Is this something I can do myself? Or should I call a plumber? submitted by /u/anonymous-reddit69 to r/PlumbingRepair [link] [comments]

Help! Drain snake snapped in two and I can't get the drain cover off. It's the only shower in the house and guests are arriving tomorrow!
Not sure if thats even called a drain cover, but that metal piece doesn't come off easily. Do I need to use more force? Twist or pull? Will it damage the bathtub if I take it out? It has no visible screws. Google only gave me results for removing a drain "stopper" (none of which looked remotely like mine) so I wasn't sure how to proceed. submitted by /u/Li5y to r/fixit [link] [comments]
