My landlord's smart thermostat was sending data somewhere, Deeper Connect showed me exactly where
I didn't buy the Air for this. I bought it because I travel for work and wanted my Netflix to work abroad. But a few weeks in, I noticed something weird in the network dashboard. One device was making outbound connections I didn't recognize. Checked the device list was the Ecobee thermostat that came with my apartment. The destinations? Three different ad-tech domains and something from a data broker I'd actually heard of. I don't own the thermostat. My landlord does. But it's sitting on my WiFi and apparently reporting... something... back to someone. Blocked the domains through the Deeper console. Haven't noticed the thermostat stop working. Have noticed the connections have stopped. I went through the rest of my network after that. The smart TV in the living room was calling home to 7 different endpoints on startup. My old Roomba, which I haven't used the app for in months, still pinged its servers twice a day. None of this is secret. It's all in the privacy policies nobody reads. But seeing it as live traffic hits differently than reading a ToS. Anyone else gone down this rabbit hole? Curious what people have found on their networks. submitted by /u/willzhong to r/DeeperNetwork [link] [comments]

I was able to get a new Smart Thermostat compatible with my wiring, but my AC won't turn on
How my old wiring was set up vs how my current thermostat is wired. Blue and Brown wires are unnecessary. I didn't want to reinstall my other thermostat and take a picture, so I drew lines in the wire colors and what terminals they went to. The new thermostat I have is the Ecobee Essential. Breakers are all on. Heat works fine. Fan runs fine. The AC is the only issue and won't cool the air coming in. I have a heat pump, no gas. 1 compressor I believe. Reversed O/B and still didn't work. submitted by /u/SpicyRamen5193 to r/hvacadvice [link] [comments]

Which are the best and most beloved features of smart thermostats?

Ecobee smart enhanced thermostat occasionally will run and show 4 degrees higher than set point on thermostat reading but on a different stand alone thermostat it shows temp close to set point. Why and how to fix? Is this related to smart recovery? Should that be disabled?
The problem is then it takes a few hours to drop back down to the set point and meanwhile, the temperature in the room has dropped as well. This doesn’t happen all the time it happens about two times a day. We do have our differential set up at 2.9 and I am going to change that to 2° not sure this will make any difference. It is in our house that my daughter is renting, going tomorrow to work on settings. My husband put some insulation in at the hole where they suggest putting putty. I highly doubt that the inside wall is 4° warmer than the room in northern Indiana. submitted by /u/Confident_Detail8709 to r/ecobee [link] [comments]

Configuring ecobee thermostat
How can we configure the Ecobee thermostat in a two-story home with a sensor in the second-floor bedroom to prevent it from running the heating system when the temperature in that bedroom exceeds the set temperature? The overnight temperature is set to 69 degrees Fahrenheit. The thermostat in the unoccupied first floor displays 68 degrees Fahrenheit, while the second-floor bedroom sensor shows 71 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these conditions, the heat system is still running. How can we make the thermostat smart enough to avoid running the heat in this scenario? submitted by /u/Altru-Housing-2024 to r/ecobee [link] [comments]

Smart Ecobee Premium Freezing Me Out
Could someone explain to me why my heat pump and aux heat seems to shutdown before I reach heat setpoint on my Ecobee thermostat. Specifically, notice today at 6:30 am and 7:45 am internal temp falling for a period of time, then my system returns to normal heating. The 6:30 am aux heat mode was done many by me in an effort to get some heat again, but as you can see, had little impact on internal temperature. BTW, based on past experience, both heat pump and aux (electric strip heat) work fine, but this seems to be a thermostat issue, likely a setting. I am running mostly default installation settings. https://preview.redd.it/k2q5j1s6j3hg1.png?width=460&format=png&auto=webp&s=05943460f5bd7f24f2eb672f26facaac4863b60b submitted by /u/Capital-Ad-1247 to r/ecobee [link] [comments]

Threshold setting Ecobee thermostat
Hello, hope somebody can help. I recently had an Ecobee smart thermostat installed and I now seem to be using more auxiliary heat than before. I checked in settings and noticed that the aux heat max outdoor temperature is currently set to 50°F and the aux savings optimization is 2.9°F. Does this mean aux heat is kicking on when it's 50° outside? The outdoor compressor is a Carrier, model #25HBC330A0030010. It's relatively old, but online searches tell me it should be able to handle temperatures as low as 17-24°F before it begins to struggle. Should the max outdoor temperature on my Ecobee be lower? I'm fining posts suggesting it should be ~35°. I guess I'm concerned I might somehow overextend/wear out the compressor. if I lower the threshold? submitted by /u/Moonspindrift to r/hvacadvice [link] [comments]

Smart Thermostat Recommendations?
Hi! I have put myself in a rabbit hole and would like to be pulled out LOL. We have a 102 year old, 2 story (plus basement and attic) 1500 sq ft home with a gas furnace in the basement and a central AC (all 1 zone). Currently we have a non-programmable thermostat that is installed right next to the front door so we feel like we don’t get accurate temperature readings. I’m looking for a programmable thermostat that can account for the poor location. A bonus would be something that can make adjustments according to humidity but definitely not necessary. I don’t need anything super fancy, just accurate and the least likely to start glitching (seriously get bummed when I see reviews on $300 thermostats tapping out after a year). Basic searching is telling me that an Ecobee Enhanced or Honeywell T9 may be our best bets - looking for feedback on these and any suitable alternatives! submitted by /u/Slow_Barnacle_5867 to r/thermostats [link] [comments]

Do we have any options here for a smart thermostat without running a new set of wires?
My husband and I recently bought an 80's home in the US and are looking to upgrade our thermostat. We seem to only have R, Y, W, and W2 wires. We looked inside the wall and didn't find a C/blue wire or G wire. Ecobee PEK system sounds like it won't work without both G and Y wires.. We don't really want to cut into the wall and run new wires, so do we have any other options? submitted by /u/Ok-Entertainer-8093 to r/thermostats [link] [comments]

C-wire confusion; looking to upgrade to smart thermostat
Hey there. Relatively new homeowner of an old house. The folks that lived here before us were… sometimes entrepreneurial with their solutions here, so I try to gather lots of information before making big changes. I’m thinking of upgrading our thermostat to a Honeywell smart thermostat (RTH9585WF1004) or an ecobee smart thermostat. Open to thoughts/suggestions here. My current model (pictured) is a Honeywell Home RTH221B1039. It… is terrible. It turns off despite having fresh batteries, and will run the furnace constantly until we catch it and turn it off (which seems pretty dangerous…? It got to 84 once before I caught it!). The interface responds poorly to us changing the temperature and I’m just kinda sick of it. My question here is… Is there any way to know if I have a C-wire from these photos? It doesn’t seem like I do but the blue wire to the Y is confusing me? And I don’t understand what is happening between R and RC (a jumper…?). I likely would hire someone to help install after I make the purchase, as I’m pregnant, live in a cold climate, and want to make things easy peasy. I’d love any advice or input! Thanks for reading/helping!! submitted by /u/JuliAngela to r/thermostats [link] [comments]

The Ecobee SmartSensors were the answer!
About a week ago I posted about not being happy with the temperature variations and performance of my Ecobee Enhanced thermostat. Several of you suggested that I should add the SmartSensors to help with that issue. As you can see from this chart, the thermostat consistently reads 2-3 degrees differently than my sensors. I’ve now taken the thermostat out of my “comfort setting” loop and I’m just using the sensors to control my HVAC unit. The temperature in the house now feels exactly like it should. Thanks for the advice! submitted by /u/tnpoppy to r/ecobee [link] [comments]

New to home assistant and need a smart thermostat
Hello! I'm new to Home Assistant (pulled the docker container to my Unraid host last night haha) and would love some help picking out a smart thermostat. My goal is full hardware control from the HA platform without the need to purchase additional integration hardware. I really like the aesthetic of the Ecobee and Nest devices, but have read mixed reviews over the last few years of their supportability and consistency. Can any users of these smart thermostats confirm how well they work with HA? Is there a better smart thermostat than Ecobee or Nest? I'm trying to take advantage of my power companies rebate; any guidance would be very much appreciated! submitted by /u/englishMuffinExpert to r/homeassistant [link] [comments]

Is the blue wire the common wire? Smart thermostat install
House built in 1997. Attempting to switch to smart thermostat. I think I can do this myself if the blue wire that is connected to Y is the common wire. Thank you EDIT: Only 4 wires (no extra wire in the bundle) and no common, like most of you stated, so used Power Extender Kit at the control board. Watched ecobee video and everything's working. Why did you choose ecobee over other smart thermostats?
Just curious why any one chose ecobee over other products like Nest. When we get a new thermostat I’m debating whether to stick with ecobee or not. Edit: Thank you all for the feedback. People's favorite smart thermostat
I have an opportunity to get a $100 rebate from my power company (no contract or thermostat access needed) and I'm wondering what people like to use. My options are Google Nest Thermostat, Ecobee 3 lite, and Sensi Smart thermostat. They also have the upgraded versions of those but that will start being money out of my pocket that I would like to avoid if possible. For context, I wfh most of the time and my partner doesn't have a consistent work schedule so I don't think the learning thermostats would really change anything. I also don't have individual room control. TIA submitted by /u/TheAxman12 to r/smarthome [link] [comments]

When you wake up in the middle of the night freezing. Could be that Smart Thermostat and that energy savings option you have enabled.
Sure enough, woke up a few minutes ago with temp in the house approaching the mid 60's. Thank you CenterPoint Energy!! I remember reading something about utilities being able to control users thermostats if they were enrolled in energy saving programs. Went into the settings of my ecobee > More > 3 line menu bottom left > eco+ on the top and it has the option to Disable for today, for one week, or indefinitely. I changed it to one week and sure enough, as soon as I did that my heater kicked back on. I'm aware the grid is taxed at a time like this but a low 70's is reasonable especially when I'm the caretaker for older seniors and the wife is pregnant. Oh if you try to disable indefinitely, you'll have to call your provider to opt-out. Article about that this summer - https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Texas-power-grid-ERCOT-energy-prices-17308287.php https://preview.redd.it/ntjhf4s6fm7a1.png?width=1125&format=png&auto=webp&s=b89540fe7b7ff05c758bb98e3668a6a1511314f6 https://preview.redd.it/36d19fo0fm7a1.png?width=1125&format=png&auto=webp&s=afb4fe7c041d177633fcff8b6c773d2ecf53ad56 https://preview.redd.it/0a8pths1fm7a1.png?width=1125&format=png&auto=webp&s=997d3e52062b2ac1d7e11acf79a1eddbf529b3b2 submitted by /u/hotrodguru to r/houston [link] [comments]
