Windows Server blocked my USB pool. So I nested 9 Virtual Hard Drives, built a Parity RAID, and pulled a drive while copying just to prove a point.
I wanted to build a cursed Storage Spaces pool out of 9 random mismatched USB sticks and SD cards (ranging from 14GB to 250GB) crammed into a powered USB hub and a secondary USB 3.0 hub (sharing bandwidth with my mouse and keyboard). Windows Server 2022 immediately blocked them because it strictly forbids pooling "Removable Media". I took that personally. If the OS rejects the hardware, you abstract it. I formatted all 9 drives, created a dynamically expanding VHDX on every single stick, and mounted them. Windows was easily fooled, saw them as standard fixed disks, and let me combine them into a massive 400GB+ pool. To not waste the capacity of the 250GB stick, I created two volumes: A Parity layout (similar to RAID 5) scaling up to the limit of the smallest drives for my secure data, and a Simple layout (RAID 0) using the leftover space as a "high-speed" garbage dump (which is hilarious because they all share a single screaming USB controller). Of course, Windows fought back. It unmounts USB VHDXs on reboot, completely killing the pool. So I wrote a dirty .bat script that force-mounts all 9 virtual drives on startup to magically revive the RAID. I wanted it to act like a TRUE NAS, but it refused to share the drives via SMB because I didn't have an ethernet cable plugged in. So I strapped a fake Microsoft Loopback Adapter (10.10.10.10) to it and crowbarred port 445 open in the firewall just to trick it into offline sharing. The ultimate test: I started copying a 4.4GB ISO to the Parity drive and physically yanked one of the sticks out of the hub. It was so cursed that it actually hung the entire PC and forced a hard reboot. When it came back, Windows put the USBs in Read-Only mode ("dirty bit"), blocking my auto-mount script with an 'Access Denied'. After I manually unlocked them in Explorer, the Server Manager revealed the beautiful truth: The Simple volume (Y:) was completely dead and gone. But the Parity volume (Z:) coughed up a Degraded warning and came back online, with the test file perfectly intact. The parity logic survived a pulled drive AND a hard crash. submitted by /u/Wi-Fight-IT to r/homelab [link] [comments]

Virtual Desktop with Ethernet Cable
Just tried experimenting to see if I could take an Ethernet cable and run it straight to my quest with a Ethernet to usb c adapter and run virtual desktop with my WiFi shut off in my quest. My pc is also wired to my router. I’m blown away by how well things look and run. I’m surprised this method isn’t talked about more often. To me it’s superior than doing a link cable from your pc with meta quest link in terms of visual quality and ease of setup. submitted by /u/Positive-Doughnut858 to r/virtualreality [link] [comments]

Running 30m Ethernet cable to our garage - Yay or Nay?
Hi all, can someone give me some guidance on this and if it's okay to do? We are currently converting our garage at the bottom of our garden to an office so I can WFH. We already have power running down there, which comes off a socket in the back of the house. Our router is in the Ground floor front room (I already have an ethernet cable running up to the First floor front room). My plan is to take it all the way into the loft, along the loft, down the boxed in section of our soil vent pipe and out the back of the house. Is it as simple as how I've planned it out? I.e Plug ethernet into router, run it to the garage straight into my PC I've heard it needs to be Cat6a so it doesn't interfer with the power cable (?) Anything else I should be aware off? I know I need trunking/protective houysing and should lay 2 ethernet cables in case one fails after a while I would run it through the front room to the back of the house but we have a great big chimney breast I don't fancy drilling out! Thanks! https://preview.redd.it/isol19oussog1.png?width=930&format=png&auto=webp&s=71a6f9c195c5867f6e755617cc3c8ffb682ee24d submitted by /u/TheBombTom to r/DIYUK [link] [comments]

How do I get an ethernet cable here?
Me and my girlfriend are moving into our apartment tomorrow, and we don’t know how to get my PC wired. What is the best way to go about this? It is a rental apartment so I cannot do major damage or anything crazy unfortunately. I’ve thought about running a flat cable and running across the “area causing issues” and then putting a rug over it, but I heard that can cause damage on top of flat cables being not very good. PC will not connect to Internet while on Ethernet nor WiFi
I woke up this morning and tried to get on my pc for normal work stuff, and have been dealing with this since. As the title says I can’t connect to the internet while on Ethernet or WiFi. However, this problem does not exist for other devices. I’ve flushed my dns, reset winsock and the ip, did a full network reset, manually uninstalled network drivers, tested different cables etc. I’m at a complete loss for what to do. submitted by /u/LadleLoverDS to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

PSA: Everyone should strive to connect their PC with ethernet instead of WI-FI
Ethernet connection is far superior to WI-FI connection - not in speeds (as WIFI6 can get to 9.6GB/s), but in how stable the connection is. Test after test brings the same results: Less jitter and lower pings with Ethernet connections over WIFI. Even if your Wi-Fi connection is to a router with WiFi7, the best in the market Wi-Fi adapter AND is close to the router, you'd still see around 30% improvement in jitter. I'd rather sim/game on a decent PC cable connected than a top-of-the-market PC with wi-fi. Keep racing. submitted by /u/Spearush to r/simracing [link] [comments]

Electrician kept delaying his visit. So I learnt to crimple ethernet cable connector myself.
I wanted my PC to have wired internet for some reasons and got the ethernet cable on loose (without connector). When I bought the cable, the guy at the shop said he's ok with visiting my home to do the crimping work since the wiring part needs to be done without connector. For 3 weeks, he kept delaying the visit stating various reasons plus he quoted 400rs to do the job. Heck even the cable costed me 1200rs. I looked up online & found that even the tool used for this costs like 390 rs. An youtube tutorial in my language gave me the confidence to do it myself. So I did & it's working perfectly fine. These days people are being a lot unprofessional & frustrating. They have an attitude that they are doing us a favor through their service. It's better that we learn to do all these small works ourselves instead of trusting on these guys. Plus it's much more satisfying when you do it yourself! submitted by /u/ChampionshipMean9521 to r/Frugal_Ind [link] [comments]

If your main PC is only getting <100mbps, why have you not fixed or replaced the bad ethernet connection yet?
My main PC has this issue and I work in IT, which makes it almost embarrassing. It's just... I mean it was such a PITA to run the line from the switch on the second floor of our house, over the "game area" room and between it and the roof, through an attic space, and down the insulated outer wall. I really don't want to address it. I am hoping above all hope it's the shoddy flat ethernet cable that comes from the drop, to the other side of the room. So, why have you folks not fixed yours yet? ETA: Oh and thanks for the pep-talk. I finally decided to get to the cable. Turns out it wasn't the cable. It was the AP I was connected to, physically. When I swapped it for one upstairs I was back to gig speeds. A couple of days later, it was back down though. So, it turned out to not be the cables or AP. It was and still is the "smart managed" switch (TL-SG1024DE). It turns out that it seems to knock down ports to 100mbps at times. I'm guessing it's based on traffic. Now, I need to trace the cables to the port and turn off the auto feature and fix it to gig. Another job for tomorrow. submitted by /u/devildocjames to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

How can I provide internet for my neighbor across the street?
Hi, I've got a fiber connection with plenty of extra bits, meanwhile my neighbor has no internet due to life shenanigans. I'm a software engineer but know very little about home networking. I setup an isolated wifi on my router for guests and bought a TP link ax3000 which gets the signal across the street but not into his house. So close!!! Do I need a bridge? My router is in the baaaack of my house and I use a wired connection to my pc, so I can't move my router and we don't want to drill or anything to get an ethernet cable closer. Ideally, what we'd do is place a second extender at his house, but the problem from what I read is daisy chaining extenders is not a good idea. Can I use a bridge? I had a professional illustrator create a diagram of what I'm trying to achieve. I hope it helps. submitted by /u/StrongBadsGloves to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

PC has suddenly decided to limit itself to 100Mbps Ethernet connectivity, and I can't for the life of me figure out why.
So sometime in this past week, my PC decided it can no longer do 1Gbps ethernet connectivity, even though it has been doing it no problem for a number of years. Current Setup Motherboard: EVGA X299 FTW-K CPU: Intel i9 7820X Ethernet Adapters (On board): 1xKiller E2500, 1xIntel I219-V Router: Nighthawk XR1000v2 Steps taken so far in the troubleshooting process: Tested cable using cable tester, no damage found (Known good cable) Updated & restarted router. Uninstalled drivers from both adapters & restarted PC to allow windows to reinstall them automatically. Ran latest TCPOptimizer to reset settings to windows default & restarted PC. I installed the Killer Control Center suite from EVGA's download page for my motherboard, and it is showing as having 1500/1500 Up / Down, but in windows' device manager, it is showing as only having 100/100. What am I missing here??? submitted by /u/-PotatoMan- to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

Nearby lighting strike blew the lan guard off my motherboard through the Ethernet cable
Just like it says a lighting storm came through was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard and didn’t think anything of it until I turned my computer on and found out that the internet connection was dead. Confirmed I had internet through my phone and started the usual procedures of restarting things and checking things off the list tried new Ethernet cables and all. My pc doesn’t have WiFi so I couldn’t check that way. Checked all the drivers and everything appeared to be fine minus no internet. Dig a little deeper and found a little chip setting on top on my graphics card that said LanGaurd on it look on the motherboard board and the spot where it goes is burned. I’m assuming the surge traveled through my Ethernet cable and this little thing saved the rest of the pc bc it all appears to be working except internet. I’m not sure if having the power supply cable hooked to an ups saved my pc but my motherboard will now need replacing. 😞 submitted by /u/feliciafoxpaws to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

my 50 years old house has pretty old cabling. the phone cable has 7 wires (4 colored and 3 completely white) and I suppose the thicker one is a radio cable and it worked well even in the farthest room's outlet. My PC got struck by lightning through Ethernet cable
During the time of lightning I've unplugged everything except the power adapter of my modem and after sometimes I heard an explosion and the whole house was covered in smoke. And when it settled down all I could see was the burned modem and when I checked the PC , it looked like nothing happened to it. Then I got the power back after 2 days , and that's when I realised the Ethernet cable really messed up my PC. Even the speaker that was connected to the PC got burnt. Thankfully , The PSU is still working , and I don't know the status of other components yet. submitted by /u/Thejus_Parol to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

TIFU by not plugging the Ethernet cable in to my Xbox
Many of you would be aware Australia has some of the worst internet in the world, it is so bad that I have 2 connections at home, 1 for downloading, watching Netflix etc which has unlimited downloads and I run only over Ethernet. The other I use exclusively for online gaming when my partner is using the main line, it is a 4G wireless connection that costs $55 a month and gives me 15GB in downloads (more than enough to play online) I am usually very careful about which connection I am using on the Xbox (Ethernet or wireless) but I had been playing on PC all day which is only connected by Ethernet so when I changed over to Xbox and started browsing the store it slipped my mind that it was still connected to the wireless 4G modem (you can see where this is going) I decided to buy Titanfall 2 (68GB) because it is ridiculously cheap in the current sale and then I went to bed. I woke up this morning to discover my 4G modem had downloaded 74.8GB this month. My ISP charges $10 for every 1GB I go over my plan. TL;DR I bought Titanfall 2 for $500. submitted by /u/Edenspawn to r/tifu [link] [comments]

Gaming - 50 ft of Ethernet cable vs. WiFi adapter
Building a PC for the first time and have ran into an issue regarding network connection. My wifi/router is a floor down from where the PC would be stationed, which poses a slight problem. I'm not exactly sure if using that much Ethernet cable would exactly provide good internet speeds, and if buying that much Ethernet cable would just be stupid all together. I've looked into a wifi adapter, but I'm not exactly sure what's good and what's not. I will be primarily gaming on my PC, but I'm also on a budget. I'm not looking on spending more than $30, and I've found that you can purchase 50Ft of Ethernet cord for about $10. Would it be better for my connection and speeds to buy a wifi adapter for my PC, or to buy Ethernet cables that wire down to my router. Any help and suggestions are appreciated, thanks. submitted by /u/Darth_Plagueis_ to r/buildapc [link] [comments]
