TL;DR: 3 of us (all first timers) are flying in and trying to decide between a large tent + 10x10 EZ-Up or two 10x10 straight-leg EZ-Ups with tarp/tapestry walls and no tent. Which would you do given the forecast? We’ll be doing a Walmart run and sleeping on air mattresses since we can’t realistically fly cots or hammock stands home. If we do the EZ-Up setup, the plan is: - Two connected 10x10 straight-leg canopies - Sleeping area under one, hangout area under the other - Tarp walls on the sleeping side - Tapestries on the hangout side - 10x20 tarp covering the whole ground underneath I like the idea of one big airy space, but I’m a little worried about sleeping on air mattresses directly on the ground under and EZ-Up if we get a decent amount of rain. For those who’ve done Roo before, would you rather have the extra weather protection of a tent, or are two EZ-Ups the better move? Just got back from weekend one, and while the sets were incredible, the GA camping situation felt like a complete free-for-all. I don’t remember footprint creep being this bad in previous years. I feel like people are completely ignoring the designated 10x30 space limits. My crew arrived early Thursday and set up our standard 4-person dome and a single EZ-Up, keeping strictly within our painted lines. We even re-angled the canopy to make sure our guylines didn’t drift into the walkway. Everything was great until the group next to us showed up at midnight. Headlights on. Doors slamming. Then the sound of an air compressor firing up. Instead of a normal setup, they started deploying this massive, multi-room inflatable camping tent. the kind of heavy-duty inflatable shelter you usually see in glamping setups or listed in bulk on Alibaba or Amazon. It had air beams instead of poles, and I’m not exaggerating when I say they had to run an air compressor off their car battery for 40-45 minutes straight just to fill the air beams. By morning, when it was fully pitched, the footprint of the thing had completely swallowed our guylines and pushed about three feet into our space. One corner was flirting with the fire lane. When we politely asked if they could shift it back inside their markers, they acted like we were killing their vibe for even bringing it up. I totally understand wanting to be comfortable for four days. We all invest in our setups. But at some point, GA camping only works if everyone respects the boundaries. Ok so my base tent is a medium duty Ez Up 10x10 canopy tent. I used to use a yoli canopy but it couldn’t withstand heavy rain and collapsed last summer. Inside is an ez up camping cube. It’s set up over a tarp with foam tiles over it. This makes the floor soft and insulates the ground quite well. Outside of my camping cube are 3 outer walls with vinyl windows, the 4th is a polyester door. This creates about a 3 inch air gap between the outer wall and inner walls. My heater is a Mr heater portable buddy. On the 4500 btu low setting it burns through about 3 one pound cylinders a night. I set it on a 2x2’ cement tile with foam underneath it. I ran the experiment three nights. 1st night 35 degrees outside, low wind. Temperature in the tent hovered in the low 60s after getting up to temperature in about 30 minutes. 2nd night 25 degrees outside, medium wind. The temperature in the tent was in the mid 50s. 3rd night I took the outer wall down to see how much it was actually helping. It was 25 degrees outside with low wind. Running the heater on 9000 btu for an hour the temperature peaked at 48 degrees. When I put it on low the temperature fell down to 44 after a few hours. I had the data I needed so I called it quits at that point. I also run a 72 foot strand of solar powered rope lights I got at harbor freight. I sleep with a mask on so I just leave them running all night. I designed a mounting bracket to attach it directly to my tent. The camping cube has a 2x2’ mesh vent in the center so I’m not that concerned with carbon monoxide accumulation. Plus the outer walls are held to the canopy with Velcro straps so it’s hardly air tight. I didn’t experience and condensation inside the camping cube itself. The only water drops on the floor were from melted snow I tracked in.
