Lately I've been seeing fidget & snack trading on my fyp on TikTok and it just got me thinking imagine if a few of us got together and did some B&BW trading... Finally got my 11 Pro delivered this week, so figured I'd give my take on things. I like to think of myself as very much a power user and heavy gamer, so I think I fit RM target audience. So I got my 9 Pro two years ago after my ROG 5s decided to kick the bucket (love the dead motherboard issue on that device). It's been my daily driver for both personal and work life and helped me play through a fun backlog of games via emulation. Still runs great, still does 99% of what I want it to do no problem. I'll also point out the main reason I upgrades was storage. PC games, ps3 and switch emulation, keeping a Linux distro in termux, high end Android games, etc there is only so much space to go around and the 512gb in the 9 Pro just was not enough anymore. If the 9 Pro had an SD slot or some usb-c controller found a way to integrate storage on board, I would probably never change devices (looking at you RedMagic version of the gamesir controllers. I know you know that I know you can do something like that and that'd be worth that premium price tag over the base versions). Likes: It's very aesthetically pleasing. Like I want to not have a case on it levels of pretty. I will be running a case like always, but still it's gorgeous, so a see through case is a must. The power. I know things are not 100% for driver support on this yet, where as the 9 Pro and it's SD Gen 3 have been cooking for a while, but I can see the clear difference already. As example, I can get both to run BOTW fine, but the 11 has more headroom, runs cooler, and for longer without issues. PC emulation is also a fun one where the 9 has better compatiblely right now, but anything the 11 can run, it will run better. Also I like to puzzle solve probably more then I like to game, so the tinkering right now is a lot of fun for me. Biometrics. Wow did I forget how much better the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is VS the optical. That super tiny bit of time fidgeting and rescaning you finger is not something you think about till you don't have to anymore. The shoulder triggers. I have big a** hands. Bigger triggers on the side are far more comfortable to use for me if I'm not in the mood to attach one of my controllers for a game. The longer, but still not great, software support. From my experience with the 9 updates were quick up front when it was the new hotness, but it's nice to see at least 3 years of support on paper for the 11. RedMagic, I'm just saying that 5 would be better though. Since you have to in the EU, it's kinda bum to not just make that universal. The battery life. As expected the phones with stupid huge batteries tend to last a long time. Even now my 9 Pro is a champ, but fresh phone with a fresh battery lasts forever. The "Meh": Moving the blaster to the back of the phone. It's far better then removing it, but I liked it at the top. This might be the old in me, but I liked using it like a remote, so the same motions as a normal remote just felt nice to me. RGB. Don't get me wrong, I am a 2000s gamer through and through, so my heart longs for seizure levels of RGB goodness, but it's OK on this device. I think there are 2 big misses, RBG behind the fluid loop and full customizable colors. RedMagic please give me more then just like 7 colors, let me go full rainbow on this. The cameras. They are just fine and pretty much the same as they have been since the 9. I feel like they are a bit softer in the focus, but acceptable. Things like GCam offset the back camera issues to turn them from OK to Good. The waterproofing. Am I going to game in the shower? Probably not. Am I going to game in the rain? Probably not. This one for me personally is just a neat that I will probably forget about later. Dislikes: The front camera. I know it's a trade off, I cannot have big clear screen without some comprise. But it's barely, and I mean barely, any better then it was 2 years ago. There is less blurring, which is nice, but overall it reminds me of selfies from my Galaxy Note 4 from 10 years ago. The Bottom "Game Mode" line thing. This does nothing but make it so cases look and are extra flimsy on the left side. If we are gonna have that, why is it not a touch button I can map to something? It even has the 2 tiny RGBs! I spent like hour trying to figure out where the option was to enable them. My day was ruined and the cake was a lie. Translations in the software. I feel like this got worse. Typos, capitalizations (or lack of them), or just clear missing text on some things drive me nuts. RedMagic just hire someone to proof read the English ui. For the real question, was it worth the upgrade? For me, yes. I like the look, the storage for all my gamer heart is there, and I will 100% use that power for everything it's worth. However, if I had gotten the 9s Pro in the 1tb model, I would not have really been able to sell myself on the upgrade. If I had something older then then 9 Pro, I'd think it'd be a solid upgrade, and in perfect world I'd probably would be more patient and wait for the 12. Overall though, I'm very happy with the 11. For some establishments it was a finishing touch to have the best students offered a chance to sail on a real starship for a hands-on experience before joining a crew proper. Not a few students worked unreasonably hard to make the top grade, in the hopes of boosting their careers at Aminia’s school herself included. A crash in slow motion, and all it took was the mere presence of one man on the Rapacity to make it happen. And this was before the rest of the girls knew about him being in season. Heavens help her if they did. She had only gotten a slight whiff of his pheromones, and the effect was like gravity, constantly pulling her attention towards him. How would the rest of the girls react? Worry about that later. Just keep him away from them until the next stop. Taking a look at the two plates in front of her Sasha called out to August. Gaining his attention, she motioned to the food in front of her miming taking a bite. Walking over he took the seat across from her, eyeing the food with curiosity as a plate was pushed in front of him. Putting his hands together August closed his eyes and said something under his breath, before looking at Sasha. -“Thank you for the food”- Taking a bite he paused briefly, chewing slowly. Sasha for her part tried not to imagine this being a date, the boy’s proximity intensifying the effect of his pheromones. In an attempt to banish the thought of her current circumstance she chose to focus on the meal instead. For all the boasting she did, Gudrun was a good cook, today’s first meal being no exception. Mostly tubers with a bit of meat and a couple of vegetables. Not much but being near universally edible made it a staple on long trips. The tubers were perfectly cubed with a satisfying crisp on the outer layer. The meat was neither over or under cooked, and the veggies were still slightly crunchy but hot and well steamed. If food really was the way into a man’s arms, then perhaps she did have a shot. If he wasn’t going home that is. A throat clearing brought her attention to August. –“Can I get some water?”- he said making drinking gestures. “...” He repeated the gesture. Sasha was pretty sure he wanted something to drink. “Uh, sure.” Standing she walked to the wall opposite the window. Opening one of larger doors she grabbed a couple of cups from the stack next to the dispenser unit. Selecting the water function she filled the two cups, walking back she offered one to August who took it gratefully. Surprisingly he downed the entire thing in a couple of greedy gulps. He looked at her expectantly holding out his cup. -“Can I get some more?”- Slightly confused she took his offered cup and returned to the dispenser. Now refilled she gave it back to August, who again drank it all in parched gulps. This process repeated several times. Each trip and emptied glass fed her growing concern. He was drinking a lot, not unheard-of levels, but far more than was normal for a Tret. If she had to guess the amount was closer to what a woman twice his size would need in a day. Seriously what was going on with him? Her mind was running off in all sorts of directions. Most of them, alarming. Maybe he was running away from an abusive relationship, or poverty, maybe even some illegal experiments? And what about his lack of Axiom presence? Was he in danger from some outside force? Were they in danger too? Maybe she should say something to the captain again or try to hide him in case someone came looking. Or- -“Thanks.”- Her downward spiral was arrested by the sudden thanks, looking up she saw August with his latest cup half finished. Right, she was getting worked up by his pheromones, it was more than likely he was just a sheltered boy out for some adventure and snuck onto the ship sometime ago and had found himself in over his head. She considered this as she deposited the dishes into the automatic cleaner next to the dispenser. Their meal concluded he again returned to standing in front of the window gazing again into the endless expanse. Sasha mirroring him resumed her own vigil. One staring out the window, the second watching the first. Cistene was making her way towards the living areas in the front of the ship, med-kit tucked under one arm, the red and blue bag almost the same size as her torso. The similarities in size between her and the bag she carried was not due to the size of the bag, no, but because Cistene was a Metak. Short, curvaceous, and sporting the blue skin and physics defying wings associated with her species. Fairly typical for a mature member of her species, her manners however were anything but standard. Which is not to say she was extra difficult, but rather that she was painfully blunt and difficult to excite. A trait she was entirely oblivious to. In addition, she had developed a habit of using Axiom to boost her energy levels so she could stay awake longer. Predictably her appearance suffered. Shuffling into the lounge she was met by Jenna. “Good morning.” She said adjusting the bag hanging on her shoulder again. “You said a male needed a med-scan?” Jenna nodded. “Yes. He is in the mess hall; Sasha is watching him.” The duo started walking to the mess hall, talking as they went “Right. What species is he?” “Tret. Looks about twenty.” “I didn’t know we had a male Tret on board.” “We didn’t. We have four more days of sailing before we dock. Until then NO ONE is to be alone with him. Hello everyone! My (23F) dad (M62) had a massive stroke on the left side of his brain August 29thwhile he was at the gym. He spent a month in the NCCU and a little over a week in the step-down unit. He has had 4 procedures done: emergency EVD, shunt, tracheostomy, and PEG tube. Last Friday, he was transferred to a nursing home/ rehab facility. I'm looking for advice on things I can get or do to help him in recovery. His left side is slightly paralyzed, but he has started moving his left foot in his sleep, and he is gaining some feeling in his arm and hand. He moves his right side a lot. He moves his leg on and off the bed. He fidgets with his right hand literally all day. Grabbing whatever is in reach and squeezing, picking, or scratching it. The only time his hand is not moving is when he sleeps. He's started biting things too. I asked the nurses about this, and they said it's compulsive and common after a brain injury. He can understand when people are talking to him. He communicates best by shaking his head and lifting his eyebrows, but he has starting to speak verbally! He has said my name, yes, no, thank you, I'm fine/good, hi/hello, bye. He can give a thumbs up, squeeze with his right hand, and wiggle his toes on his right foot when asked. He tries to say more, but I have a hard time understanding. I got communication boards for him, but because he does not have good control of his hands right now. Before having a stroke, he was very active. He went to the gym every day and was partially vegetarian. He is an electrician by trade. His hobbies include painting, drawing, listening to music, playing chess, solving math equations, and reading the Bible. He is not too big on watching TV, he mainly watches the news, boxing, and sermons. He is also fluent in four languages. Ship: Multiple Location: Multiple As usual, I was handling multiple tasks at once. Trying to get all of our ships repaired and replaced while also building new fleets was a monumental task. Recruiting, training, and assigning staff to those ships was another monumental task. On top of all that, I had to deal with spoiled senators who had secured themselves firmly within social bubbles that kept them ignorant. The lack of attacks on Sol had raised tensions for a while and made the politicians more receptive, but now those tensions were evaporating and the politicians were, to use an antiquated turn of phrase, back on their bullshit. "I fail to see how giving the Republic our technology would possibly stand to benefit us, Omega!" Senator Richardson said with an insincere dramatic flourish of frustration. "The technology we would be giving them is several generations behind our own. Add to that strict oversight and anti-intelligence measures, and we have no cause for any concern. In return, we gain our new fleets at record speeds," I replied. "We get new fleets, but we would be pouring money into their economy. A foreign economy which we aren't even trading with yet. My constituents have concerns about this!" If I had eyes they would be rolling. By constituents he means the corporations that fund his campaigns. The corporations who would much rather we build our own stations and THEN start building the new fleets. Short-sighted fools who believe they're the smartest people in the galaxy, as fools often do. Still, they make life interesting in their own way. "The Republic has to hire many of our own citizens to work aboard the stations to be able to fulfill the orders. Trainers, subject matter experts, licensed professionals and the like. The ships are being made to our standards, and the Republic is footing the bill for the people they're hiring," I explained. "So we're getting a rebate," Richardson replied sarcastically. "Not only that, but integration. Your constituents could be swayed by simply pointing out that integration leads to trade and access to new markets. Our people aboard the stations will want supplies from home that the Republic cannot provide, and those supplies will be viewed with envious eyes. Before long, popular demand for trade networks will explode," I gestured. "But if we vote no on the proposal... who knows how long it will be before we can secure trade guarantees?" Richardson looked deep in thought. I could tell he was working on positioning statements for his corporate overlords. Finally he nodded and waved his hand, indicating that he will vote yes. I already had more than enough yes votes, but I needed Richardson to explain to certain corporate board members why this idea had merit. A yes vote won't have much weight without corporate cooperation, and a direct meeting with me would intolerably bolster their already massive egos. Satisfied, I turned off my avatar and switched my attention to the reptilian ship-head that I was leading to what would be the most interesting meeting of his career. The directors had been at a bit of a stalemate due to a lack of intelligence regarding the Republic's intentions. Neither they nor the senate would sign off on an intel gathering mission just yet, though, so I came up with an alternate solution. Ship-Head Uleena has just graduated from a diplomacy training course, so he should have his finger on the Republic's pulse. Plus I really want to see his reaction. "So I just sit here?" Uleena asked. "Correct," I replied. Uleena sat down and I activated the chat for him. He jumped slightly as the hard-light monitor and keyboard appeared in front of him. He studied it with obvious confusion on his face until he realized what it was and who it was connected to. I relished the shock and horror that overrode the confusion. ////////// *Director 1 has joined the chat* D2: And with that, we're all here. Hello Ship-Head Uleena. O: He'll need a second to adjust. ////////// "What the fuck, Omega?" Uleena asked as he scrambled for the keyboard, his hearts beating as fast as they possibly could. "Welcome to the world of diplomacy, Uleena," I replied, gesturing toward the monitor. "This terminal is translated for your convenience. Just type the way you normally would and I'll get your point across." Normally we would be having Omega go through back channels to get the answers for us, but that would take too long and risk hostilities with the Republic. Instead, we're just going straight to the horses mouth. ////////// "What's a horse?" Uleena asked. "It's a four legged mammal that's used as a mode of transportation on several human worlds," I answered. ////////// D9: Let's get to the point. We have questions for you about this proposal and our time is limited. Answer quickly and truthfully. Understood? U: Yes. D9: Good. How likely is it that the Republic will hire our own technicians to serve aboard the shipyards? U: Very likely. It's part of the assumptive draft. D2: Where will the materials be coming from? U: We have several suppliers that are both public and private. D3: Hello again, Uleena. Will the Republic allow oversight? U: Hello Director 3. Yes, but there was some struggle with that. As long as the US doesn't attempt to indenture our workers it will be fine, though. D11: Clarify what you mean by indenture, please. U: Overwork them. D3: That's not what I meant by oversight. Will the Republic allow us to make certain that information regarding certain technologies doesn't leak? ////////// Uleena looked at my avatar with confusion. "They want to be certain that sensitive technology is worked on by US personnel only, and they can't be sure of that without having people who are reporting back to us," I explained. ////////// U: I'm confident that the Republic will approve any oversight you have planned, so long as it isn't detrimental to our citizenry. D8: I get the feeling that the Republic is borderline desperate for this to happen. Am I right? U: Yes. The OU is pressing again. Hard. We need the tech that you're willing to give, and we need you to be a much larger force than you are now if we're going to win this war. D13: Not to mention the economic boom. U: I don't know anything about that, but I expect it would be a secondary reason. There won't be an economy if we're all wiped out. ////////// Uleena didn't know it, but several Directors chuckled at his reply. Despite his nervousness about his new duties, he had a certain way with words. Director 6 was fidgeting, though. In previous meetings she had been the most unsure of this proposal. "You should just say what's on your mind, Director," I said to her. "I know. My intent isn't to be hostile, so I'm working on a good positioning statement," she replied. "No, I don't think there's another way to word it. Best to be blunt." ////////// D6: What assurance do we have that our own technology will not be turned against us after the war with the Omni-Union is resolved? U: With respect, we don't go to war as often as you do. There's posturing among the members of the Republic, but it's mostly localized and rarely acted upon. As things are now, we have a numerical advantage and that's it. But by building your numbers up to match our own, improving our shields and weapons tech will still see you at a significant advantage. Even if you were to give us the shields and weapons that you're currently using, you would still be able to outmaneuver us. In short, your assurance is that we have a mostly peaceful history, you will have neutralized our numerical advantage, and you will still be significantly ahead of us technologically. D12: Well said. D5: I see no flaw in your argument. D2: Are there any other questions for Ship-Head Uleena? Uleena looked defeated but managed to utter an acceptance before gathering his strength and leaving the room. With all this mulling over in my mind I couldn’t help but long for what life would be like without today happening. I would be blissfully ignorant of the Terran’s true nature, and had a good friend in Alex, even without the knowledge of what he really was underneath that suit of armor. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I barely heard my communicator going off, I looked down at it despondently. I did a doubletake at the name on it. It was my parents. I hesitated for a moment before finally accepting the call. The hologram flickered to life as I saw my parents, their once vibrant and colorful feathers turning grey as they aged. “Hey Mom, hey Dad,” I managed to get out. Mom’s crest immediately flared out in concern as she saw my expression. “Dear, are you alright? Can you believe that? And they’re so small too! I could probably carry thirty without breaking a sweat! And to think that I was the one to discover it, and that the Terran would want to be my friend after his cover was blown!” I gave a whistle of shock. I suppose that I didn’t really process everything that happened until just now. My voice started to shake. “And now, he’s lost his job, and probably going to be court martialed, all because he tried doing the right thing when we fought off those pirates.” “It sounds like you have a lot going on right now,” Dad said more as a statement than a question. “Oh Stars, Dad, you have no idea.” Tears were starting to form in my eyes. “Everything has been happening so fast that I haven’t really been able to do anything but react.” Mom’s expression softened as she saw that I was on the verge of tears. “Well, dear, you know that we love you, and by the Stars, we wish that we were there for you, but that’s just not possible right now. Find yourself a crewmate that you can be vulnerable with, and just talk with them. I can’t imagine that it’s very fun being cooped up in that ship for very long.” I gave a weak sniffle. “I’ll have to do that,” I said. “And to answer your question, I’ll be getting some shore leave in about three weeks on the Terran diplomat ship The Strength Through Diplomacy.” I was about to talk some more, but I heard a loud knock on the door of my cabin. “Oh, that’s probably for me. I’ve got to go, but thanks for calling, it really does mean a lot to me.” “Take care of yourself Aeva,” Dad said. “I speak for both of us when I say we will always love you and support whatever decision that you end up making.” I gave them an appreciative nod and ended the call before sighing heavily. I got up from the bed and made my way over to the door. I opened it, and instead of another crewmember, there sat Alex the Terran, in his mech looking up at me expectantly. The mech looked as if it had somehow gotten even worse in the hour that I hadn’t seen it, perhaps he got into a fight with one of the crewmates? “Hey, Aeva, I’m sorry to bother you right now, but I was wondering if I could talk to you?” he asked. “Sure,” I said as I motioned for him to come in. I headed over to the bed, while Alex parked himself in front of the desk, where he placed his hand. There was a hiss as the cockpit opened to reveal the Terran climbing down it’s arm until he came to a stop on the desk where he sat in that strange cross-legged position that he seemed to favor for one reason or another. There was silence for a moment before I decided to break it. “So, one hell of a day It’s been, hasn’t it?” I asked, deciding to take some of the phrases that he seemed to favor when it came to expletives. He gave a small chuckle. “You can say that again, I just hope that it all works out in the end, I suppose,” he said while he fidgeted with his hands. Silence reigned once again as we both seemed too exhausted, both physically and emotionally, to speak. “I think I found myself a job that I can keep paying the bills with,” he finally said, breaking the comfortable silence that we had around us. “It took some doing and begging the captain for, but I managed to get something going, since I can’t do security now.” “Oh really? Doing what?” I asked him as I turned my head to look at him. “I’m going to be looking at the security cameras all day every day to report any wrongdoing to the captain or security, depending on how bad it is.” He gave another noncommittal shrug. “Or at least that’s the plan if the captain can get the head of security on board with it all,” he explained as he continued to fidget with his hands. “Why do you even need this job anyways? It’s not like you can use it on most products that the galaxy uses.” He gave a noncommittal shrug and gestured to the mech. “Well, I already explained it to the captain, and I don’t really want to explain it again, or at least not in detail. Basically, I owe a lot of money to the company that made the mech, and I can’t default on those debts.” He gave a big yawn. “God I’m tired.” He stood up and made his way back over to the mech, climbing over it before finally being interred in it. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow. Mr Gay approached the ticket counter and asked if there were any seats left for a flight to Miami. This would be a last minute flight as his schedule had suddenly freed up and he was now able to visit his elderly mother on her birthday. The lady at the counter smiled as she searched, but she had some bad news. There was one seat left on the only flight to Miami, but it was a low priority seat and he might be bumped if anyone else bought a ticket. Figuring that this was better than nothing, Mr. Gay purchased the ticket and went to the gate. A couple of hours later, Mr. Gay boarded the plane. What luck! He had not been bumped from the flight and it looked like he was going to make it to Miami for his mother's birthday. He was seated on an aisle seat when he noticed that a gentleman in the row in front of him, sitting by the window, was sweating profusely and fidgeting in his seat. "Are you alright, sir?" Mr. Gay asked. The nervous man replied, "I have a terrible fear of flying, and I usually request an aisle seat, but because this airplane is so full, they sat me at the window and now I'm scared out of my wits." "We can't have that," Mr. Gay said with a smile, "I will gladly switch seats with you so that you can have a more comfortable flight." With a relieved sigh, the nervous man thanked him and switched seats with him. A few more minutes went by as they waited for the plane to leave the terminal. The captain came on the PA system: "Ladies and gentlemen, our apologies, but it seems that we have oversold this flight and our flight attendants will now be asking certain passengers to deplane at this time." Mr. Gay sank in his seat. He knew that they would be coming for him. Sure enough, the flight attendant came down the aisle, but walked right past him. Mr. Gay had the sudden realization, that they were heading for his prior seat. The flight attendant tapped the shoulder of the man that Mr. Gay had traded seats with. "Sir," the flight attendant asked, "Are you Gay?" The man in the seat seemed surprised, but then sheepishly nodded his head and said, "Uh... yes, I-I am, but..." "I'm afraid you have to get off the plane, sir." Mr. Gay stood up. "Wait!" He said, "You don't understand! I'M Gay!" A very feminine man a couple of rows over stood up and slung his head back.
