You don't always need an app to start a food delivery business
I recently saw a local entrepreneur in my city prove this. About a year ago, he started a food delivery service with nothing more than WhatsApp, phone calls, and a few restaurant partnerships. No mobile app. No big investment. No fancy technology. Customers would browse restaurant menus shared through WhatsApp, place orders by phone or message, and deliveries were handled manually. Most people would say this can't scale. Today, that business is doing around 80–100 orders per day. As a software developer, I had the opportunity to build their food delivery app. Last month, I completed the project, and they officially launched the app after growing the business for nearly a year without one. AITAH for leaving a bad review for a restaurant after they told me they weren't serving food after I already ordered, while I could see other people eating.
For context I (46M) a bit autistic, walked to an upscale bar at 4:55pm that had like 3 poeople in it, very tired, pretty hungry, and ordered a burger, and started looking at the drinks menu. After a he took the order, and after a few minutes he came back and told me "We aren't serving food at the bar right now", I look around see people sitting at tables wih food, and just said "I guess I am done here.", and went somewhere else. Realizing I just got refused service. I wrote this review. "I went to the bar, after a long week of work, ordered a burger, then I was told they weren’t serving food at 4:55 pm. What kind of business does that." The owner reposted this. "Hey (my name), we’re so sorry to hear you had a long week of work. Our kitchen team had a long afternoon too after serving well over 200 guests for Graduation reservations booked months in advance, hence why a brief 10 minute reset before dinner service began at 5pm. " (not told any of this). ...... "What’s confusing is that after your server explained just how busy the day had been (this didn't happen), at no point did you ask a single follow up question about why the kitchen temporarily paused service (I wasn't told the it was a temporary pause). A quick conversation in person usually clears things up far better than assumptions made afterward online. (I pefer to not agrue with waitstaff)". .... "Our team spent the day honoring reservations and executing one of the busiest days of the year. And we’re the kind of business that honors its staff for doing it so well, even if it means angering people like you. (WHAT DO YOU MEAN PEOPLE LIKE ME!!, Customers who were told the werent getting their food?)" Keep in mind, I had no idea thet were busy, I had no idea it was graduation. They didn't say it was a 10 minute break and had to wait 5 minutes. They could have just said, the Kitchen will open in 5 minutes. I got this snarky remark, like it was all my fault. They decided to shutdown the kitchen after I ordered. They coudn't tell me before, or as I sat down. I feel like, they could have been more polite in explaining the situation, their rudeness makes it feel like they just wanted to refuse me personally more. If they had a polite explanation instead of that diatribe that was blaming me for not arguing with waitstaff to get answers. I might have changed the review. Small food business owners: what would you do if your recipes were being sold?
Me and my brother started a small food business back in 2018 selling burgers, flavored wings, and flavored fries. At first, it was just an online side hustle to help make ends meet while also improving our cooking skills. We’re from a small city in Southern Leyte, and during that time, there were barely any businesses offering those kinds of food choices. Mostly it was just Jollibee, small eateries near the terminal, and snack houses. We honestly didn’t expect the business to grow the way it did. Over the years, we gained loyal customers and regulars, and we survived a lot of challenges too, including Typhoon Odette and other struggles along the way. Here’s the problem though. As time passed, a lot of small businesses started opening with almost the exact same concept and menu we introduced back in 2018. Personally, competition doesn’t really bother me because I trust our products and I know we can still do better than the copycats. What really frustrates me is that some of our former employees — people we trusted and trained — eventually left and shared parts of our recipes, especially our sauces, with other businesses. Before, our solution was simply to improve and tweak our recipes constantly, even if it meant increasing our costs just to make the taste better and stay ahead. But now it’s getting out of hand. One specific former employee is reportedly selling our entire concept and recipe ideas to other people for around 80k–100k pesos, and now similar businesses are popping up in other municipalities. I just want to ask for advice from fellow business owners or anyone who has experienced something similar. DoorDash Driver Stole My $90 Order, Marked It “Hand Delivered,” Then Told Me to F*** Off
Ordered DoorDash tonight for the family. Did a DoubleDash from Burger King and KFC, about $90 total. Driver messaged saying it was busy and there might be a delay. No issue, I get it. I responded and moved on. A little later, the order gets marked “hand delivered.” No knock. No doorbell. No food. So I message: “Where did you leave the food?” Driver replies: “At the address it was hand delivered enjoy.” Except there’s nothing there. Checked the porch, garage, around the house, even made sure it didn’t go to a neighbor. Nothing. Then out of nowhere: “F* YOU!!!”** (censored in the app, but you get the idea) So apparently the delivery model is: mark it complete, eat the evidence, and insult the customer. Small food business owners: what would you do if your recipes were being sold?
Me and my brother started a small food business back in 2018 selling burgers, flavored wings, and flavored fries. At first, it was just an online side hustle to help make ends meet while also improving our cooking skills. We’re from a small city in Southern Leyte, and during that time, there were barely any businesses offering those kinds of food choices. Mostly it was just Jollibee, small eateries near the terminal, and snack houses. We honestly didn’t expect the business to grow the way it did. Over the years, we gained loyal customers and regulars, and we survived a lot of challenges too, including Typhoon Odette and other struggles along the way. Here’s the problem though. As time passed, a lot of small businesses started opening with almost the exact same concept and menu we introduced back in 2018. Personally, competition doesn’t really bother me because I trust our products and I know we can still do better than the copycats. What really frustrates me is that some of our former employees — people we trusted and trained — eventually left and shared parts of our recipes, especially our sauces, with other businesses. Before, our solution was simply to improve and tweak our recipes constantly, even if it meant increasing our costs just to make the taste better and stay ahead. But now it’s getting out of hand. One specific former employee is reportedly selling our entire concept and recipe ideas to other people for around 80k–100k pesos, and now similar businesses are popping up in other municipalities. I just want to ask for advice from fellow business owners or anyone who has experienced something similar. Ordered DoorDash tonight for the family. Did a DoubleDash from Burger King and KFC, about $90 total. Driver messaged saying it was busy and there might be a delay. No issue, I get it. I responded and moved on. A little later, the order gets marked “hand delivered.” No knock. No doorbell. No food. So I message: “Where did you leave the food?” Driver replies: “At the address it was hand delivered enjoy.” Except there’s nothing there. Hear me out
I have no tattoos currently, but am planning to completes 2 sleeves over the years. My right arm will be planned around my daughter (currently 3), my left arm around my son (currently 8 months). The picture here is a drawing my daughter made for me when she turned 3, I asked her to draw daddy a picture, here is the masterpiece (lol). I have an appointment June 4th to get this on my right forearm around the elbow area. Planned to be fine line and have a 3 hidden in the drawing with some minor things like a small spoon element (inside joke with her) and some light scattered dots around it (supposed to be sprinkles, her favorite food is marshmallows sprinkles and whipped cream, asks for it everyday). EVERYONE I SHOW THIS TOO SAYS “you’re kidding, don’t get that” so here’s the thing. I understand tattoos (at least in my eyes) are all about what they mean to the person getting them, 70% of me says screw them, but the other part says idk maybe it isn’t the best idea. NO AI WAS USED IN WRITING THIS I have been working on this post for over a year, it's all my own content, nothing from a model. I'll leave a screenshot showing the markdown files with dates in the comments. Hello my name's Troy. I'm a serial founder who's been either a founder or founding employee at 9 startups with the total valuation of said startups north of $1bn. My current startup that I co-founded is currently at $5m in ARR and growing rapidly. I used to be a teacher and have been really itching to write and what I've learned over the last decade and a half of being in the startup space. Mods, I'm happy to verify above if needed. I browse this and other similar subreddits often and see a lot of similar questions pop up. The problem is the vast majority of the members in these communities are either trying to sell something or don't know what they're talking about (respectfully 80%) This value should be driven by a combination of your research of the space and your own ability to execute on it (your skillset). The percentages are meant to evaluate how likely you think you can make something that generates ANY money at all. This is why opportunities that solve pain points you experience is such a great starting point. If you would buy the product you're thinking of making then your confidence score here should be high. Choosing A Winner So now that you've got your list it's time to pick what opportunity you'd like to pursue. This is where you really come into play. I don't have a formula on what combination of traits makes an opportunity a winner. That's extremely dependent on you and what you want. Your goal now is to use the context you've gathered about these opportunities to make the best decision for you. Although I don't have any silver bullet formula here's some things to think about... As timeline to ship decreases, need for high confidence also decreases. If you're able to crank out a lean version of a product very quickly you don't necessarily need to be extremely confident it'll work. If you can prove out the concept in just a few weeks, it can be totally worth the risk to try a lower confidence opportunity. Bigger scale does not equal better space There are a lot of reasons to not want to target massive spaces. You'll have more competition with more resources. Making it a lot harder to really stand out. Depending on your goals it might be better to build a business in a more niche space with a smaller opportunity size. Not to say venture scale opportunities aren't worth chasing, they are of course. However, I'd recommend a very high confidence before diving in. 1.6 | Testing The Market At this point you should have an idea of the opportunity you want to pursue. Now we'll build the leanest possible solution and then test the market. The goal of this is to get ten paying customers. Once you've done that you should feel very convicted that this is an opportunity worth chasing and you'll critically have a decent sized user group to talk to and learn about their needs / use cases for your product. What you're trying to learn I want to be very clear with what this is for and what indicators you want to really look for. I'll list them out plain and simple for you to easily reference then explain some more detailed thoughts. Were my assumptions / research about the opportunity correct? Can I get customers? What do customers want? Let's dive into each of these a little bit so i can paint some additional color on what you should look to answer. Were my assumptions / research about the opportunity correct? In the prior sections we discussed different techniques to evaluate and research opportunities. It's important you're able to confirm as much of this as possible. This is extremely valuable not just because the information itself is useful for this specific opportunity but also because it'll give you confidence or insights on how to adjust your research and evaluation techniques for the future. Can I get customers? The exact number is relatively arbitrary and dependent on what you're building. Ten is probably right for most opportunities. However, this is very up to the exact product you're building. Some products don't really have "paying" customers but rather generate revenue from advertisements or other means. The most important thing is to be intentional about what concerns you're trying to validate. The purpose of this is to get people in your target market to pay for the solution you're providing. Your ability to find these customers and how difficult it is to get them bought in on what you're making are key indicators for if you should commit to a space. If you have to talk to one hundred people who are in your target market before anyone is even remotely interested... it's a good sign you are not in an opportunity you should chase or your current approach is very wrong. What do customers want? In order to test the market you're going to have to make some initial assumptions of what kind of product or solution you should offer to address an opportunity. A good chunk assumptions will likely be very wrong. The feedback on what's good and bad about your ideas for your solution is critically important. You might find that the bulk of the problems you're trying to address are already solved quite well by an existing solution, and you'll need to drastically adjust your approach or drop the opportunity all together. The leanest possible solution... In order to test the product you'll need to have something to sell the customer. This should not be an "MVP" in the traditional sense. You instead want the simplest possible iteration of your proposed idea to address a opportunity. It is insanely easy to over-engineer or over-build your first iteration. You're not building your dream product. You're not building an MVP. You might not even have to build anything at all... I know quite a few people that have gotten through this phase with a simple google form and some manual work. Anything that is not directly addressing the problem you're trying to solve you should not include. The goal here is to confirm our assumptions and analysis of the opportunity space and our idea. Giving us the confidence to go all in and truly focus on chasing the opportunity. Finding your first customers By this point you should have a good idea of where to source and find your customers. The most reliable way to do this is to find them in person and have a conversation with them about what you're building. Please lean into the phase that you're in. Far too many founders try to seem like they are more professional or established than they are. They'll spend a bunch of time making an attractive landing page, professional business cards, or even swag for their pre-launch product. On paper, it might seem like presenting yourself as a professional established company would help attract customers by building trust. To be clear though, this isn't actually the case and in the vast majority of the businesses I've built or been a part of building the first few sales done by the founders are often times some of the easiest. People love transparency and love aspiring entrepreneurs. You as a founder talking directly to a potential customer is not something that is possible at large companies. Lean in to where you're at. Approach potential customers with a humble eagerness to help and understand the problems they're facing. Generally, people will want to root for you / support you. There's no one size fits all solution for finding your first customers so instead, here's some tools to add to your tool-belt for you to implement depending on what you're trying to build... Advisor Shares Giving out a small advisor share package to early customers is a great way to get them on board. Especially if your target end user is a fairly prestigious group such as lawyers, doctors, or executives. You don't want this to be a significant amount of equity. Typically, 0.1-0.5% total. I usually like to frame these in total # of shares. Bigger # = Better. This also lets you cash in on something called the Ikea effect. People love something more when they feel like they were a part of making it. Giving key customers a very small ownership stake early on gives them a huge incentive to be a fantastic source of feedback, a long term customer, and makes them very likely to roll with the punches as you figure out the kinks. Discounts It's very important that you still charge for what you're offering. Giving away your offering for free can significantly impact the quality of the feedback you're receiving. There's a few different kinds of discounts that can be valuable at this phase. Here's a few to consider... Selling At Cost: Your goal at this phase isn't to make money. A lot of the time I like to sell the service "at cost" to the customers at this phase. That means you're just breaking even with the sale. In my companies early stages, this is what we did. We simply charged the fee we'd break even on with no additional costs. Godfather Offer: Putting together a extremely competitive price that you can then offer long term to a client is a good way to get them bought in for the long term. Free Trial: Giving things away for free is not ideal but depending on your space this can be an expectation from your customers. It's important you do collect payment information and a agreed upon date to begin charging. That allows you to still get that same investment as a full paying customer as they'll be evaluating if the product is worth the money you will charge at some future date. Know when to fold This is very likely the most time you've invested into any of your ideas up until this point. It can be very easy to get to this phase and try to force something to work. This is made worse by how common the bullshit "never give up" mindset is in the entrepreneur community. So I'll say it. PLEASE GIVE UP WHEN SHIT ISN'T WORKING You are still so early on in this process. Do not get stuck trying to sell a product the market is not accepting. Be ready to rapidly drop your ideas and assumptions about the space or even to drop the space all together and look for a different opportunity to chase. You should "never give up" on your dream of being an entrepreneur, but you should be incredibly ready to give up on specific opportunities when your ideas are not panning out. 1.7 | Committing Congratulations! You've gotten through the phase where the vast majority of potential businesses die. Provided you got the validation you were seeking out when testing the market it's now time to do what very well may be the hardest thing for many entrepreneurs.... You need to commit. Once you find something that is showing you good signs you need to commit. As an entrepreneur myself, I know how hard it is to just work on one thing... case and point by me writing this shit right now instead of working on my startup. You probably have a bunch of other ideas you are excited about the potential of and are interested in exploring... But unfortunately, your limited resource is always time. AITA for telling my husband he's made me reconsider leaving him alone with the kids in the future
Hi, I wanted to get an opinion of whether I was in the wrong here. It was my niece's wedding this weekend. She's my oldest niece, the first amongst her cousins to get married, and I'm very close to her. There were also some events happening last weekend. So I had taken the last week off from work and flew to hers the weekend before. My husband and the kids (12 y/o daughter, 10 y/o son) were supposed to fly in at Friday for the main event. Before I left I had prepared enough food for them to last the while. The stuff they were planning on eating first, I had put in the fridge, and other dishes in the freezer. All they had to do was let it thaw, put it in the pan (or the pot), add some water and heat it. I had even marinated some chicken separately for them to cook in the oven. For their school lunch I had told my husband what had to be made for them, that it would take 20 minutes in the morning so to factor that in. He had said he understood. Now this is my fault too, but for the first 2 days I made sure to ask during my conversations with them if the food situation was fine, but hadn't brought it up later, plus all the events we were having distracted me too. When they flew in I asked if it had all gone well, if the food had run out, he said no there was more than enough, which made me feel better. But when we got home yesterday, there was way more food left than I thought. I brought it up, and found out that even thawig and heating the food was too much to do after the initial refrigerated dishes, and they'd defaulted to eating out. And he'd been giving them lunch money instead of home made lunch. I was so annoyed, I told him I was disappointed in him, that I'd have to now think twice before ever leaving him alone with the kids again. He got heated too, said I wasn't giving him his due credit for taking care of the kids, they were happy with what he was doing and that should be it, that the kids were safe and sound and there had been no emergencies, and it was messed up for m to say I didn't trust him with the kids. We'd been curt with each other in the morning today. AITA? Edit: just want to add we had discussed what I should leave for them before I started cooking. I asked the kids what they want, and had discussed it with him, he'd asked me to make his favorite meal which was the one they ate first. Also, yes I do work. I'm a dentist and have my own practice. Editing again: A lot of people are saying there was no need for me to have done the prep. I hear that. I'm not saying its the best way, it's just the structure we have. Its just what the kids are used to, so I didn't want that disrupted. Normally, I pick up the kids on my way back from the clinic and make them lunch. Thrice a week I go to a dental center in the evenings too, so before I leave I normally have dinner set up, and snacks made for them for the evening. So when I'm back they're normally full, and so I can finish making dinner. So they're used to home made food. And yes, I should started teaching the kids how to cook too. They're busy with studying and their extracurriculars and friends so I just avoid pushing this onto them but gradual responsibility is a good idea. Aitah for telling my bf I'm not going to be anything like his mom and if he expects that we should break up?
I am 24F my bf is 25M. This past week we flew to his home town, his grandma passed away and we flew there to stay for 4 days. I don't actually have anything bad to say about his mom, she is very sweet, warm, and welcoming. My bf is #5 of 13 children. The youngest is not even a year old yet. His family home is huge and very clean and everyone seemed great. The issue I have is she is and has always been a SAHM. While we were there she was constantly busy. She did everything. She basically streamlined his dad's life. He doesn't have to do really anything at home. She cooks, she cleans, she looks after the children. She even does his laundry and ironed everything. His dad really didn't do anything at all. Apparently she even takes care of the yard and gardens. All he does is maintenance. She also gets up before he does and makes his breakfast and lunch and gets everything ready for him so all he has to do is grab it and go. He said once the kids get old enough they have their own chores and stuff but she did a serious amount of work. His dad owns some sort of contractor business. As soon as he walked in the door after work there was food on the table and no one was allowed to eat until his dad sat down and ate his first bite and told his mom it was good. The meal she cooked was absolutely massive. There was enough food to feed an army she was cooking most of the evening. It was very good but holy crap it was a lot. I asked him if this was special because of the guests but apparently she always cooks enough to feed an army. Lunch was pretty much whatever was in the refrigerator you wanted. Breakfast was also a massive meal I have no idea what time she got up but it was a big breakfast. The family did at least clean everything up so she didn't have to clean but holy crap I do not envy her. When we were on our way home my bf was talking about his family and basically saying how much he loved the way they live and I told him I am absolutely not doing that at all. I don't want to be a SAHM, I have a career I love. I absolutely will not be streamlining his life, I expect a basically 50/50 lifestyle. I'm not doing everything for him. He acted like he understood and said he didn't expect me to be exactly like his mother but he did expect me to be home more if we had children. I basically told him if he wants a SAHM we should break up and he can find someone else who feels the same. Now he is upset and basically told me he wanted some time. I haven't heard from him since Monday. I'm not sure what to do. Edit holy shit I was not expecting this to go sideways. I thought maybe 10 replies max. I just got off work. I'm so sorry. So to answer some questions The oldest 8 children are all adults. They do not live there. They were just there for the funeral. The funeral was for his paternal grandmother. I do not hate his family I just don't want to do that. They were all very nice. I believe his parents are happy. They seemed very affectionate toward each other. I have no idea how old his mother is or was when she started having children. I assume she is in her early 50s. She looked similar in age as my mom who is 53. I do believe this relationship is over. Okay, so you come into my CBD restaurant and get the menu. It won't say 'entree' and 'main course', it'll say 'small' and 'large' plates. Now here's the kicker. You don't know what that means, so you ask if a large plate will fill you up. Now the waiter says "These meals are made to share." They'll sound really smug so you know it's trendy. It'll be rice and sauce or some bullshit, but it'll be $50 instead of $25. Maybe we'll put a sliver of pork belly or squid on top, whatever's on special. Now the waiter says "These plates are designed to nourish everyone at the table, like they traditionally did in" Mexico or Argentina or Latvia or the fucking Isle of Man, I don't care, just say it's for everyone so they buy more of them. I want to start a food business, any tips for beginners?
I work at a fairly stable job. Salary isn't that high, but good for a first job. Enough to cover my expenses and have a little saved up every cutoff. But I want to have another source of income, something like my own food business. Like a pizza stall or burger place where I make my own products and sell. I live near schools so when (hopefully) things return back to normal and students come back to school, there's a lot of foot traffic rin. There are also commercial areas relatively near rin to where I live where I can find and set up a store rin. I still am making my way to saving up for an emergency fund, so not much capital rin. I'm thinking of taking out a loan from CIMB or other banks, but I don't know if that's the correct approach rin. Need ideas for sneaking my co-worker food
I have resale business but I help an estate company from time to time and they let me pick their warehouse. There is the sweetest woman there that is struggling financially but very proud. I tried to slip her some cash but she wouldn’t take it. I’d like to start bringing her food to help (she mainly eats fast food/doesn’t cook). IAMA FoodTruck owner having his slowest night ever. AMA about the rough parts of starting your own business, or foodtrucks in general.
I started my own foodtruck about six months ago. Lifelong dream, but it is far from easy. Figured there have to be a lot of people out there thinking about, or just began, starting a business. Or, if anybody just wants details on the foodtruck industry. Hope I can add some insight... If anybody cares.
