Is there any way to make contact over a distance of 6 miles using a 5-watt GMRS radio?
To give you some background, I currently live in Merida, Yucatan. It’s a city where there are no tall buildings between my house and my children’s house. Everything is flat; there are no hills or slopes. The houses are at most two stories high, but there is plenty of greenery and trees. I’m thinking of installing an antenna on the roof of my house and another one on my children’s house—any suggestions? submitted by /u/Suspicious-Pudding53 to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

Need help choosing the right GMRS radios for a 40–50 car cruise group
Hey everyone! looking for some advice from people with more GMRS experience than me. I run a car cruise group (40–50 cars), and I’m trying to standardize communication for the whole group this season. Before I tell everyone to go buy a specific radio, I want to make sure I’m making the right call. Here’s our situation: Usually 40–50 cars in a line Typically within ~1 mile from front to back Occasionally we get stretched out more with turns / lights / hills We’re all in vehicles (so not ideal conditions) Terrain can be slightly hilly at times Goal: Reliable communication from front to back of the group Doesn’t have to be crystal clear at max distance, just usable Simple enough that 40+ people can use it without messing up settings Budget: Hard cap of ~$150 per radio Ideally less so people actually buy in What I’m currently using: Cobra Trailblazer 450 (GMRS handheld) In real-world testing I’m getting ~0.5 mile range in hilly/curvy areas at best That’s what’s making me hesitate. I expected a bit more usable distance. My questions: Is ~0.5 mile realistic for handheld GMRS in vehicles + hills, or should I be getting more? Would stepping up to a 5W radio (like BTECH GMRS-PRO or similar) make a noticeable difference? Is there a “best bang for buck” radio you’d recommend for a group like this? Would upgrading antennas make a bigger difference than upgrading radios? Is it realistic to expect front-to-back communication at ~1 mile without a repeater? I’m trying to balance performance vs simplicity, because if it’s too complicated, half the group won’t set them up correctly. Any advice, recommendations, or real-world experience would help a ton! I want to get this right before telling 40+ people to spend money. Appreciate it submitted by /u/Away-Home-9978 to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

New GMRS license – trying to choose a good family radio setup (need advice)
UPDATE: I'm really surprised so many suggested the TIDRADIO's since they are not solely GMRS? Hi everyone, I’m brand new to GMRS and just got my license. I’m trying to decide which handheld radios to buy for a small family setup and could really use some advice from people with more experience. My situation: I want 3 radios total (one for me and one for each of my two kids, ages 22 and 24). We live along Highway 60 in Webster County, Missouri, between Fordland and Rogersville. One kid lives less than 1 mile away, the other is about 8 miles away in a straight line. We plan to use a repeater in Ozark, MO (Ozark 675 462.675 MHz) most of the time for normal communication. These radios are mainly for family communication and emergencies. Things that matter to me: Beginner-friendly (this is my first radio) Reliable GMRS repeater performance USB-C charging Desktop charging cradle if possible Decent battery life Some durability or light water resistance for outdoor use Simple enough that my kids can just turn it on and use it Antennas we plan to use: Daily use: ~18" foldable “tactical” antenna Emergency backup: foldable “tactical” antenna From what I understand, I’ll probably program the radios once and then leave them set up, so programming difficulty isn’t a huge concern. Let me know if I'm wrong about this please. Radios I’m considering right now: Baofeng UV-5G Plus Radioddity GM-30 Pro Radioddity GM-30 Plus TIDRADIO TD-H3 Plus TIDRADIO TD-H8 (3rd Gen) For someone in my situation (beginner, family use, repeater use), which of these would you recommend and why? Also open to hearing if there’s another GMRS handheld around the same price range that I should consider instead. BEGINER - Dedicated GMRS radio VS Tri band GMRS
How much benefit is there to having the capability of using VHF/UHF FM VS the simplicity of just GMRS on a radio? I know there is a setup up to use GMRS on a full band radio and I have been told one issue is if the channel gets changed it may be very difficult for some to get it back on to the right channel, which could be an issue since I want to get a radio for each of my young kids in their 20's. I was thinking of the UV-5RM or 5RM PLUS, VS maybe a UV-5R? submitted by /u/Goats_vs_Aliens to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

Are there any GMRS radios that can be charged with a USB-C to USB-C cable?
The only ones that I’m aware of are the Rocky Talkie radios, but are there any others? The radio’s actual charging speed doesn’t matter to me at all, but I’ve gone all in on USB-C charging for everything else whenever I travel (phone, tablet, laptop, wireless headphones), and I just really don‘t want to have to pack a lone USB-A charger just for the sake of the radio. From what I gather, almost none of the GMRS radios on the market follow the USB-C spec properly, and in turn, if you try to charge them using a USB-C to USB-C cable, they won’t charge. PS I gather that some (?) of the external batteries for certain Baofeng models miiight be able to be charged over USB-C to USB-C? And if that may be the case, that’s at least better than nothing, and I’d be open to hearing about those too. submitted by /u/openapple to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

Tips for new GMRS user
In the process of getting my sister and I a set of radios to talk on the GMRS band. Just filed my application with the FCC and I have a couple questions. She lives 10 miles away. What antennae should I get us? We both live in suburbs and there's really no huge buildings or obstacles between us. All pretty flat terrain, but with tons of suburban houses and commercial businesses. Is there any better way for us to talk to each other via handheld radios other than using GMRS and repeaters? If there's a repeater between us, then we just both connect to the repeater frequency and tone, and we should be able to talk to each other? answered If we connect to the repeater station, then the owner can definitely hear us, I assume. Right? answered What would be the best radios to get to be able to reach a repeater 5 miles away? answered Thanks. submitted by /u/justwanttohelp3 to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

Hello I'm a radio newbie, do you guys suggest a HAM or GMRS system to comunicate with my friends when we go in the woods?
As title states I want to buy a tiny portable radio to comunicate with my friends when we go in the woods. What are the benefits and drawbacks of HAM vs GMRS? We are technologically inclined so I think we can figure out solutions to most problems but at the same time it's our first time trying something like this out and we aren't sure how to make it work smoothly. Furthermore both me and my friends are tight on budget (we can't afford to spend more than 40 bucks per radio) do you guys got some suggestions on what we should/shouldn't buy? Thanks a lot in advance for any help given 😊 submitted by /u/LorePi05 to r/HamRadio [link] [comments]

GMRS Radio for Car-Club Drives
Hi, I am part of a car club that does drives around the mountain roads of Western Washington (I join most and lead a couple too). I am looking to buy a GMRS radio to communicate on the drives from my car. I'd like something that is simple, well-built, powerful (I understand that 5w output is the FCC limit though) and has a good, clear speaker (to hear over the car engine and wind noise). I'd prefer a handheld, just to minimize the amount of clutter in the car. And I don't need fancy features (we literally just turn it to channel 5 and leave it there). My budget is up to $150 or so. Do you guys have recommendations for me? Thanks! submitted by /u/Silent_Shelter6402 to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

Family GMRS Recommendation?
I'm looking for something for my family. Use cases: Something to give our kids before they go play around the neighborhood Camping / Family Trips / Scout Trips Cruises Household use SHTF / Backup to cellphones I'm completely new to HTs aside from a few cheap Baofengs and Quanshengs I use to listen to listen to local EMS/NOAA broadcasts. Yes I know GMRS is licensed. In a new radio for my family I'm looking for: Range Durability/IP67 (kids are dirty and clumsy) USB-C Charging - don't want to have to keep/carry special docks around Cost NOAA Alerts Ease of Use So far I've read good things on here about TIDRadio TD-H3 and Retevis/Aliunce. Are those both still good recommendations? I'd love to hear if you have other favorites I should try! submitted by /u/mistahclean123 to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

Seeking a rugged GMRS radio for camping & hiking where the antenna won't break.
I've been using some older Motorola FRS radios, but the antennas are very fragile and break easily if I put the radio in a backpack or if it gets bumped, dropped, or jostled around. I'm looking to upgrade to GRMS radios, but before I make the investment, I want to identify a rugged one that can hold up through the realities of camping and hiking. They are likely to get shoved in a bag, maybe dropped once or twice; That's just the reality of it. Any recommendations? Most of the ones I see online still have a protruding antenna, and it's really hard to judge their durability from the photos. submitted by /u/jaherrick to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

GMRS 'Travel Channel' - Discussion coming on HamRadioNow YouTube Channel
I want to invite members of this sub to join a live YouTube discussiuon on the topic of a 'GMRS Travel Channel' on my HamRadioNow show on Sunday, Novembe 2, 3:00 pm Eastern. I can't do that, of course, without stepping all over the rules about self-promotion (not prohibited, but discouraged and limited). So, I'll post a bit of an essay here, and if this is a discussion you'd be interested in joining via Zoom, go find the HamRadioNow YouTube channel and look for the promo. It'll have the Zoom link. OK, the essay... Fairly often on the Reddit and Facebook GMRS groups I've joined, the question of a 'GMRS Travel Channel' comes up. These posts ask what channel someone driving cross-country should monitor and maybe call out on to find other fellow GMRS ops who may be in simplex range. Maybe a base station that might be in range for a few minutes, but especially someone within a few miles, on the same highway, headed in the same direction, so you'd be in range for a while. This presupposes a 'hobby' interest in GMRS, not the more restricted 'FRS Caravan' or family/small group operators who have no interest in just casually meeting others for a radio chat. Ham Radio has a version of this, the 'National Simplex Channel' of 146.52 in the Americas (145.5 in Europe). There are typically three mutually exclusive answers: Channel 19 (462.650 MHz) Channel 20 (462.675 MHz) There isn't one (000.000 MHz) I'm in the 'There isn't one' camp, having taken several long road trips while specifically looking for GMRS simplex over-the road activity (and not finding any), and having read lots of those posts on Reddit and Facebook, and never seeing anyone describe actual success in making those kinds of contacts on their own travels. So why do people suggest Channel 19 and/or Channel 20? Channel 19: My observation is that Channel 19 is suggested just because on CB radio, Channel 19 (27.185 MHz) had been the 'trucker channel' for decades. It still is, though activity is a shadow of what it was a few years ago, when every truck and many passenger cars had CB radios tuned to Channel 19. Chatter was constant (and often annoying), even in rural areas as long as you were on an Interstate or busy US highway. You'd get advance warning of speed traps and other road issues miles before you got to them... maybe even enough warning to do something like take a bypass route. GMRS has a 'Channel 19'. Its relationship to the CB Channel 19 is pretty much just that number – 19 – but that seems to be enough for people to state flatly that 'that's the Travel Channel'. And it could be, except for one legal issue: GMRS operation is prohibited on Channel 19 (and Channel 21) anywhere within 100 miles of the US/Canada border. That covers some big cities. It's referred to is Line A, and it's part of a treaty the US and Canada have had about radio operation (not just GMRS) for decades. Briefly, Canada used to have a different radio service using those frequencies, and the treaty protected that operation. Today, Canada has its own GMRS service on those channels. It's much more limited than US GMRS - more like our FRS - with only handheld radios, limited to two watts, and no repeaters. Still, that part of the treaty is mostly obsolete. A 50 watt repeater in Detroit would be a problem in Windsor, but a 50 watt mobile wouldn't be. And Detroid can use 50 watt repeaters on 6 other GMRS channels that Canada limits to those 2-watt handhelds. Is the treaty enforced on GMRS? Will it ever be updated? Who knows (and probably 'no' and 'no'), but it does make the recommendatiuon of Channel 19 as the Travel Channel dicey, especially when there are alternatives. Channel 20: What's Channel 20 got going for it? Years ago, GMRS operation was much more restricted. You got a license that limited you to a few specific channels. I'm not an expert on the old rules, and I haven't been able to find any really old GMRS or Class A CB rules online anywhere (I'm surprised, and I've looked pretty hard). I vaguely recall that you could only talk to other GMRS stations in your license group. Maybe that was true, maybe not. But the rules did have a provision that everyone could communicate on Channel 20 (462.675 MHz) for 'Traveler Assistance' and, of course, emergencies. That rule has been gone for a long time, but old-timers on GMRS remember it, and so support Channel 20 as the Travel Channel. And to be complete, I'll note that GMRS now has NO restrictions on who can talk to who, and everyone can use all 22 channels. Well, that's good enough for me. I'll throw my lot in with the folks who promote Channel 20. But that's all it is... promotion. Recommendation. Suggestion. And in my experience, it is not yet 'a thing'. You can yell your head off on Channel 20 as you drive down the highway and you probably won't find anyone waiting for you. So I wonder: does GMRS have the critical mass of users to even make a Travel Channel possible? If somehow we all agreed that Channel 20 - or any other channel for that matter - is THE ONE, would be really find each other out there on the road? I don't know. I do know that to make that work, everyone would have to make themselves little 'beacons' - transmitting our existance every few miles. If we're all sitting on Channel X, but nobody says anything, we won't find each other. Also, Channel 20 isn't a perfect choice. There isn't a perfect choice, because all 8 of the channels where GMRS users can run 50 watts simplex are also repeater channels, and there are lots of repeaters on all 8 channels around the country. So if you do manage to get a conversation going, and you drive into an area with a repeater, it may pop up and create interference. Not maliciuous interference, but it's still interference. This could be avoided by using Channels 1 - 7 as the Travel Channel. That limites mobiles to 5 watts, but 5 watts with a good external antenna ain't nothing. But do we need another alternative to muddy the water? OK, that's the crux of my argument. I'll bet you have something to say about it, and maybe one or two even agree with me. And a Reddit forum discussion is great. But I'd still like to invite anyone interested to join the live YouTube discussion on the HamRadioNow channel. Look for the promo or the live show link, and it'll have the Zoom link and instructions. 73, Gary K4AAQ / WRPG652 submitted by /u/KN4AQ to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

PSA: No one cares if you use a ham radio, but please program it right
Just got someone transmitting on Ch 1 with their bandwidth set too wide bleeding into our local repeater’s input frequency causing all kinds of interference. No one cares if you program the GMRS frequencies into your $20 HT, heck, we don’t even really care that you’re blasting out 5W on a 0.5W frequency, but at least get the bandwidth settings right. Ch 8-14 sit right in between the repeater inputs with no room to spare. submitted by /u/Hot-Profession4091 to r/gmrs [link] [comments]

If SHTF and you managed to generate your own power somehow, what type of communication would be most effective: HAM radio, SAT phones, GMRS, or Winlink using HAM radio?
This one has been a bit of a hard nut to crack. I've heard some HAM radio operators debunk claims about amateur radio being useful in a SHTF scenario, while others have said the opposite. If HAM radio audio transmissions won't work given the lack of functioning repeaters after doomsday, would Winlink or some variant of Winlink still work through HAM radio? submitted by /u/MALACHON88 to r/preppers [link] [comments]

I have FRS/GMRS radios so could do the .5w channels for overlanding. I'm a pilot and already have a FCC Radio Operators license which apparently doesn't cover GMRS. Upon learning this hopped online, hunted down my FCC RN Number (why the hell do we have this?) and get through all the steps of navigating this horrible system only to get to the end and find the system is down for maintenance. This is what sends people postal. I'm on a road trip. If I just use channel 8 that's .5w so a buddy can talk in front of me and act as a spotter for the trails what's the real issue here? Should I get a GMRS radio or HAM radio?
I know you there's no test for Gmrs and you can start using Gmrs alot sooner. But is it worth the time to study and get a Ham license? submitted by /u/kevinvong99 to r/preppers [link] [comments]

GMRS Trash
Wanting to get my kids (8-18) interested in radio while I'm studying for my ticket, I paid for a ZA and programmed up some refurbed HTs (to avoid the FRS chs) so they could get on the air themselves. Seems there is nothing but foul mouth low lifes using the GMRS and FRS ranges for work. Is this the case everywhere? I'm reading about reprogramming all the HTs with CTCSS/DCS, but really feeling like the ZA was a waste of money. submitted by /u/schottfamily to r/amateurradio [link] [comments]
