I relocated to Seattle three months ago after dreaming of living in the PNW for over a decade. Having had a lot of time to explore and get settled, I wanted to share some of my experiences as a former East Coaster: “Seattle Freeze”: sorry guys, I’m just not seeing it. Overwhelmingly people here have been friendly and helpful. Strangers have been open to conversation, and when I sit on my patio folks stop to say hi and talk to me about my plants. The one thing I’ll say is that folks in general seem a little more reserved (I’m a native Southerner so I don’t expect anyone to match my socialization energy), but I wouldn’t call that a “freeze” by any means. Cleanliness and urban beauty: this is really a remarkably clean and gorgeous city by American standards. The architecture is amazing, the green spaces are well-kept, and most of the streets have been clear of trash. It shouldn’t be a pleasant surprise anywhere, but I rarely have trouble finding a trash can outdoors. You may be shocked to find out that this isn’t common at all in other cities and probably contributes heavily to the presence of garbage everywhere. Homelessness: yup, it’s a problem. That said, I haven’t found it to be any worse than what I’ve experienced elsewhere. The big difference is that in Baltimore/DC (my last two cities), the focus is on hiding the problem, so unhoused people are uprooted and corralled into parts of town that are less visible. It’s not uncommon to turn a corner and find an entire city block full of homeless and substance-addicted people cramped together because they’ve been stuffed there by the police so the rest of the city doesn’t have to look at them. It’s also heartening to have a city government that is actually making constructive efforts to address these challenges, instead of sweeping them under the rug. People here also have generally expressed empathy rather than disdain for these populations. Access to nature: this one is a given. Both within and outside the city, the scenery and activity options here blow away anything you’ll find on the other coast. Drivers: I’ve read a lot of comments about bad drivers here, and all I have to say is that y’all are adorable. I’ve had no issues at all and I’ve driven quite a bit in the past few months. Back East I’ve dealt with some of the most aggressive, erratic drivers you can imagine. Red lights are treated as a suggestion rather than a rule, and god help you if you try to use a crosswalk. Crosswalks: did you guys get lessons on crosswalk usage from the Canadians? People actually wait for the signal even if there’s no oncoming traffic and it is so cute. Pedestrians back East are almost as dangerous as cars, crossing against lights and wandering across busy streets without a care in the world. I’m still training myself to always wait for the signal. Public transport: wow, what a pleasant change. I’m used to buses that either show up extremely late, or in many circumstances blast past your stop even though they’re in service and have plenty of room. I’ve found the light rail to be efficient and unbelievably clean compared to Baltimore’s filthy padded cells that amble through town seemingly on their own schedule. Even the DC Metro, once considered one of if not the best systems in the country, has gone way downhill in the past 20 years and is often filthy, unreliable, and in a few experiences I’ve had, dangerous. Also, tap to pay on all transit? What a luxury. Cost of living: yes, very, very high. That said, most things such as rent and food cost about the same as DC, but with far better city amenities and a much more laid-back atmosphere. I’m also seeing higher salaries in my field here and no state/local income tax (a huge deal in Maryland), so overall I think the difference will be a wash. tldr; My experience in my first months in Seattle has been amazing. I now fully understand “I’m never leaving Seattle.” I had been actively looking at emigrating to Canada before moving here, and now I’m second-guessing that idea since I’ve found a place in the US that is very, very wonderful to live in. Right, so am breaking my 3 year Reddit sobriety to ask what I should do because I am too awkward to ask anyone in real life. So I bought a fully detached house on my own in a fairly secluded area but not middle of nowhere territory. My back garden backs on to another property where the garden is super long and a good distance from the house and there's a large garden shed. After I got the keys I was traveling a lot and working a lot to pay for what was needed to make it liveable. So the house was vacant most of the time for about a year and a half. I've now fully renovated and moved in. Including cutting back a lot of the shrubs in my back garden that had grown wild. My neighbours are a husband and wife, 50s / late 40s if I had to guess have 4 kids in secondary school and college who live at home. My first night in the house I heard something a bit odd, like a squeaking. I looked out my window and the parents were riding on the trampoline in their back garden. I had a full view from my bedroom window. I turned on the light with a crack in the curtain, just to signal that maybe this isn't as private as it once was sans folliage. Since then they've been riding almost every night in their garden shed but I can still see and hear them because the shed has these huge skylights and they do it with the big light on. They do it on a workbench so it rattles and they're vocal. I presume they do this because they are extremely loud and their kids live at home. Or maybe when you consider the trampoline, it could be a great outdoors kink. I dunno, like I'm NOT trying to perv on these people but I dunno whether I should say something to just be like FYI you may be keeping quiet from your kids but also I am here. I'm also a woman living alone so weird noises in the night do make me wake up! I've been looking forward to having people come visit and stay over but I'm actually too anxious that my neighbours will be going at it and I don't know how to explain this to people. UPDATE: Right, so I'm rightfully getting push back and I know what you mean so I just want to clarify somethings. I am not watching them. I saw them once in each location so I know what the noises are. It's the noise. My house is overlooking their shed, there is only maybe 20ft gap between my house and this shed. I'm not actively putting myself in a place to witness their intimate moments. My issue isn't that they are having sex, I don't care. It's that's I feel like I have disrupted the ecosystem by removing some plants and I'm like do I communicate this with them? They also have 3 other free standing sheds/garden rooms. I think one is a gym/sauna, an office and I'm not sure what's in the other ones. So if I was like hey so this one shed you're fond of isn't that private, maybe go to the other sheds. I've no issue with their sex lives, and sorry to anyone I offended by talking about them being too old to ride. It's not that they're riding it's that they're doing it EVERY night and for a good while as well. I didn't mean to offend anyone and I shouldn't make presumptions about menopause. Hi! I want to start by saying that I am aware that lavender is not an indoor plant but I do not have outdoor space available where it can survive (I live in the city and all I have is a rooftop where everything burns for 3 months a year). I have an LED grow light right above it for cloudy days as well as a skylight and a glass door that allows for natural light to come in. What I am wondering is: is there anything I need to keep in mind when trying to keep lavender indoors? Like when to prune it and how much, how often to water it, what nutrients I can use for the soil to ensure it’s not missing anything, etc… For now they are sitting in clay pots but still in the little plastic containers they came in, should I repot them? I also have a Salvia plant that has been in the same spot and has been thriving, especially during the heatwave (the only one in the house who seemed happy lol). I water that every 2 days by leaving it to soak in water for about 10 minutes, should I do the same with the lavender? People often assume apartments are the better option, but living in a trailer park has a lot of advantages. Most trailer parks are quieter, with fewer shared walls and no one stepping over your head and more personal outdoor space. It’s easier to know your neighbors, and there’s often a stronger sense of community than in large apartment buildings where people rarely interact. You can grow flowers, plants in baskets and have some lawn you can play sports on. You also get more privacy and don’t have to deal as much with noise from people living above or below you. Unlike a condo/apartment, there is also flexibility to move your home if you own it although you don’t own the land in both cases. I had a blast playing with the esthetic of my back deck. My vision was a cannabis jungle with a splash of color. Every morning I’d have my coffee and go check out the girls. And when I would throw parties, they always got the conversation going! I have several large, heavy terracotta pots that are sitting unused because I don't want to have to bring them inside during a freeze in order to protect whatever is planted in them. Can anyone suggest plants (in addition to certain sedums) that are happy to be grown in containers and are cold-hardy enough to come back each spring, even with the burden of being in a pot and not in the ground? I have various options for sun exposure (full sun, morning sun, shade, etc.), and I'm willing to cover the pots with row cloth during freezes. I just can't move them indoors. Thanks in advance. This really is so much more of a mental “glow up”. Now I love crossfit, running, hiking, and he does traditional weightlifting, running, climbing, skydiving. I lived in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre house WHILE the director Tobe Hooper filmed the movie. I was just a baby but I was in my baby bed or inside house when the outdoor scenes were filmed. When the inside scenes were filmed, we stayed somewhere else. Tobe Hooper wanted to use the house in his movie but hippy parents had been dodging the Vietnam draft and were growing a huge plot of weed to sell to the people around Austin. I was told a patch had just been planted and the first 5 inches had already sprouted. Tobe Hooper paid for the whole patch as if it was fully grown and ready to sale to have it all removed. He couldn't have mature marijuana plants in the outside scenes. It was the early 70s. No one would have put his movie in their theaters with bud growing in the fields. It would have made one more unique part of the film in my opinion. I'm 53 now and the youngest person in the history of horror film making, to live in the scene without the audience ever realizing. The cast that is alive still can validate my statement. We are not just in another drought year. We are in a long-term, accelerating ecological shift. Each summer is hotter than the last. Rainfall, when it comes- because it has come less frequently for almost 4 years now, is erratic and violent. Often more flood than soak. The land can’t drink fast enough to heal. And without sustained, above-average rainfall for several seasons in a row, there is no real recovery on the horizon. I’ve spent much of my life outdoors guiding kayak tours, tending farm beds, working with the National Park Service, and now employed at Zilker botanical garden. I’ve seen Central Texas in its full bloom of color and the quiet abundance of springs, creeks, and wild things. But what I’m witnessing now is heartbreaking. The rivers I used to guide visitors down are no longer navigable. Not by kayak. Not even by tube. So far I’ve bottomed out my kayak on the Pedernales, Upper Guad and Llano at peak flows this year. Springs that once bubbled clear and cold now sit dry beneath the sun. In many places, they’re reduced to a trickle or nothing at all. Creeks are stagnant or gone. Medina Lake is practically a dustbowl. Jacob’s Well doesn’t flow. The Edwards Aquifer is under its highest level of restriction ever. These aren’t just data points, they are signs of a living system in collapse. At the botanical garden, entire sections of the garden sit eerily still. It’s not a pollinator decline anymore- it’s collapse. It feels like absence. I don’t say this lightly, but in some pockets, especially during heatwaves, it feels like ecological silence has settled in. That kind of silence changes everything. As a gardener, I can tell you: the soil is stressed. The plants know. Many of our most resilient natives are showing signs of fatigue, blooming less, wilting sooner, seeding poorly. Neighbors are demanding we rip out our 8-year-old succulent patch because it “encroaches” on their side of a shared rock wall. We're heartbroken. We’ve lived here for a decade. About 8 years ago, we planted a beautiful, low-maintenance succulent groundcover on top of the rock wall that separates our yard from what would eventually become our neighbors’ lot. It’s lush, vibrant, and honestly one of our favorite little corners of the yard. The kind of thing you walk by and smile at. These neighbors moved in 6 years ago and never garden, never use their outdoor space, and suddenly decided the succulents are “encroaching” on their side. Their solution? Rip it all up so they can fill the bed with rocks and never have to weed again. So as I write this, our once-beautiful patch of green life is being pulled out—because apparently something living was too much for them to coexist with. cold weather is almost here, and while I myself prefer cooler temps over hot, this year I got into outdoor plants and flowers and I am not ready to loose all these beauties! I know they’ll come back next year (except for the tradescantia, not sure how that one will do over winter), but i am so sad to loose them over winter! I live in zone 7a, and I never expected my elephant ear, which I planted earlier this year, to actually BLOOM!!!! We had our first frost warning last night, but it’s still going strong!! Also, does anyone know how tradescantia do over winter?? I purchased a house last year and one of the things I loved about it was it had this cute shrub garden in the small front yard. There was a variety of shrubs including several dwarf mountain pine, a dwarf Japanese maple and another pine tree that was about 8 feet tall in the shape of a Christmas tree. Last year my wife and I decorated this tree for Christmas which is always something I wanted when I owned a home (outdoor living Christmas tree). My in laws have been staying with my wife and I for the past few months after the birth of our daughter. Today, completely unprompted and without asking me, my father in law decided to "prune" almost all of the trees in my shrub garden. This pruning included removing 80% of the foliage from the dwarf mountain pine near the mailbox, removing all the boughs from the Christmas tree-like one except for the top three feet or so, and completely killing the Japanese maple towards the right in the photo. He also pruned almost all the other shrubs, including creating a "hole" in one, but the three I mentioned are most distressing. When I saw this I was incensed. I am normally a calm person but this is enraging. The only explanation he could give for doing this is he thought they would grow back. At first he said he just wanted to clip a couple branches in the way, but went too far... It seems to me that restoring my garden to the way it was will be next to impossible as I think many of these shrubs are decades old (a google street view photo of the garden from 13 years ago showed it looking much like it did yesterday before the massacre; it is obvious the shrubs have been here a long time). I think this post was mostly to just get this off my chest as it happened this morning and I am still fuming about it after 2AM here. That massive crack in the door wasn't there before. I don't know what I'm supposed to do. So far they've punched a hole in the wall of the living room and tried to break down my door. I know I am egging them on a bit, but this is after months of them walking all over me. I need to just bite my tongue and find a new place soon. I swear the second I changed the password the fucker came running out to slam on my door. I changed the wifi password back so they can use it, even though they haven't paid me. If I call the cops best case scenario is they get held overnight, and these sketchy fuckers have promised me that I wouldn't be safe if that happened. They were consistently leaving dishes, garbage, and clothes all over the place. They smoke tobacco indoors and dont use an ash tray. This is because the other roommate reported them. My name was on that document too, so I freak out and call the landlord. I say "it's them smoking not me." The landlord asks "them? Is someone else living there?" At this point I am so beyond done with this shit so I just tell them yes, his brother has been living here. Then later that day they approach me furious, demanding I tell them why I "snitched on them" They're saying I made him homeless, etc, and at that point they start yelling at me for 2 dishes which were dirty in the sink which were mine. I mean, they are screaming me down saying "why don't you do the dishes? Huh?", and I straight up tell them "if I do the dishes and take out your trash, will you stop smoking inside?" "You ain't my dad!" Shortly after I kinda felt a little bad for reporting them for the brother living there, but then all those feeling vanish the night we get served the 10 day notice when they are sparking up in the living room, ashing on everything again. Fukushima was managed by TEPCO who ignored warnings about the risk of flooding emergency generators in the basement. Per Terawatt hour, coal causes 24 deaths, oil 16, and natural gas 4. Wind causes 0.06 deaths, water causes 0.04. Nuclear power causes 0.04 deaths, including Chernobyl AND Fukushima. The sun causes 0.02 deaths. Radioactive waste is a pain in the ass to remove, but not impossible. They are being watched over, while products of fossil fuel combustion such as carbon monoxide, heavy metals like mercury, ozone and sulfur and nitrogen compounds are being released into the air we breathe, and on top of that, some of them are fueling a global climate crisis destroying crops, burning forests and homes, flooding cities and coastlines, causing heatwaves and hurricanes, displacing people and destabilizing human societies. Germany has shut down its nuclear power plants and now has to rely on gas, coal and lignite, the worst source of energy, turning entire areas into wastelands. The shutdown was proposed by the Greens in the late 90s and early 2000s in exchange for support for the elected party, and was planned for the 2020s. Then came Fukushima and Merkel accelerated it. the shutdown was moved to 2022, the year Russia invaded Ukraine. So Germany ended up funding the genocidal conquest of Ukraine. On top of that, that year there was a record heatwave which caused additional stress on the grid as people turn on ACs, TVs etc. and rivers dry up. Germany ended up buying French nuclear electricity actually. The worst energy source is coal, especially lignite. Lignite mining turns entire swaths of land into lunar wastelands and hard coal mining causes disease and accidents that kill miners. Coal burning has coated our cities, homes and lungs with soot, as well as carbon monoxide, ozone, heavy metals like mercury and sulfur and nitrogen dioxides. It has left behind mountains of toxic ash that is piled into mountains exposed to the wind polluting the air and poured into reservoirs that pollute water. Living within 1.6 kilometers of an ash mountain increases the risk of cancer by 160%, which means that every 10 meters of living closer to a mountain of ash, equals 1% more cancer risk. And, of course, it leaves massive CO2 emissions that fuel a global climate crisis destroying crops, burning forests and homes, flooding cities and coastlines, causing heat waves, hurricanes, displacing people and destabilizing human societies. Outdoor air pollution kills 8 million people per year, and nuclear could help save those lives, on top of a habitable planet with decent living standards. If we want to decarbonize energy, we need nuclear power as a backbone in case the sun, wind and water don't produce enough energy and to avoid the bottleneck effect. I guess some of this fear comes from The Simpsons and the fact that the main character, Homer Simpson is a safety inspector at a nuclear power plant and the plant is run by a heartless billionaire, Mr. Burns. Yes, people really think there is green smoke coming out of the cooling towers. My children really wanted pets and so did my partner. They got a mixed breed puppy from the pound and two kittens. As these animals grew, none of the humans in my house did anything to care for them besides play w/ them and cuddle. I got up at 5:30 a.m. to walk the dog before work; I cleaned the kitty litter boxes out, I took them to the vet, I had to buy & serve all their food & cleaned up their eating areas afterward. People would just "forget" otherwise. Naturally, I also had to clean up after them when I'd arrive home & inevitably no one had bothered and there were messes all over the floor. If I "made" my partner or kids do it, they'd half-ass it to the point it where they may as well've not bothered. Same way with plants. Partner wanted house plants & to start indoor herb/vegetable garden. Had fun with it 1st week, then totally ignored. Dead leaves, spilt soil, bugs, etc. now proliferate in the "garden area." If I don't water & groom the plants it doesn't get done. I am busy & these are not my chosen hobbies. I like animals well enough, but they're a lot of work & when they aren't attended to, destroy the house. I grew up with a family that hoarded pets & our house was always nasty & smelly & embarrassing. I swore when I had my own place it would be different. The cats pee/spray everywhere if I can't get to the litter box in time & the dog chews up stuff & leaves big messes on the floor if I don't walk it. I'm the only one who'll walk him when it gets cold. We have a fenced in backyard. I bought a dog house & announced he'll live outside from now on, til they can prove they can take care of him better. Same with the cats. They're now "outdoor kitties" til my humans can show me they're ready for indoor ones. Of course, if the weather is extreme I'll let them in. Plants are all going out. I'M DONE. AITA? New Remarks: Hi. I've read all the responses and am now going to stop with comments back b/c I get the overall consensus. I'm going to copy/paste here what I put in another comment: I have no idea how to "re-home" these adult pets beside Facebook or Craigslist and you don't know really who's going to take them, you don't know anything about the people showing up, they could be going from a bad situation here to even worse. "Rehoming" adult pets is not as easy as everyone is making it out to be. I don't have abundant resources of time or energy to address this; it's causing problems and this is the best solution I can come up with, for now, to calm everybody down. I've tried for over a year to do the best I possibly could for these pets, but I just can't anymore. I don't know know how to "force" other people to do the right thing and be more responsible. Pets aren't just for snuggles and cuddles, they require a lot more attention and devotion. And yes I have tried punishing my children and withholding privileges for lack of care. I told my partner they weren't ready for pets. He brought them home anyway. If finding other homes for them is the best long term solution, then I'll look into that, but I'm not taking them any place they can be put down and I don't want them walking away with just whoever. I have a nice, landscaped backyard with a big, covered deck and patio where he'll have a dog bed in addition to the dog house I bought, and the cats will have little cat cozies, too; it's not like I'm tossing them into the jungle. We live in a temperate climate and of course I'll bring them inside when the weather's inclimate. Where I live, which is in a "countryfied" area where most people have a great deal of lot acreage and live down private dirt roads, it is not unusual at all to keep outdoor pets. Many, many people love and care for their pets, but it is very common for them to not have animals in the house. I didn't want it to be like that, but I don't know what else to do. My pets, including the cats, have been indoor/outdoor all their lives, the cats were not exclusively raised indoors. Now those are my excuses, and I won't give any more. I completely understand that many people feel like animals should never live outside. I am listening to everyone here who is saying just give them away, giving them away is better and even to people saying return them to animal control/the pound, where there's a possibility if they aren't adopted they will be euthanized. Even though I do not see it like this. That's definitely the majority opinion here. So, I appreciate all these responses and will give more thought to this. But that's all I have to say for now, and honestly I have gotten some very horrible inbox messages calling me all kinds of names as well as "suicide" warnings so I'm sorry, I have to bow out.
