What meat thermometer do I get for my husband’s birthday?
Help a clueless person out. My husband’s birthday is coming up and he loves cooking steaks so I was thinking to buy him a meat thermometer. Except I have no idea what features to look out for. He usually cooks porterhouses and scotch fillets if that helps. Most of the online recommendations seem to suggest fancy ones for slow cook BBQs, however he doesn’t cook them on a BBQ, he does them indoors on a stainless steel pan. I’m located in Australia so a local/ Amazon recommendation would be good. Hope this is the right sub to ask this question. submitted by /u/zeFortifiedMind to r/Cooking [link] [comments]

Advice on choosing a wireless probe thermometer system?
tl;dr: Suggestions on how to select wireless thermometers system with 4 probes that has a dedicated base unit display (bonus if info can also display on phone app away from home). I currently have a folding instant read compact probe thermometer that I use daily, and will be keeping this. Also have a 4-probe remote thermometer system that I use for roasts in the oven and meats in my pellet grill, where each probe has a meter long cable plugs into a "base" that displays temp of all four probes at once. There's a also a wireless "remote" unit that pairs with the base; I can carry the remote 500 feet away, and it can be set up with alarms for minimum and maximum temps. The cons of this system are the tangle of cords; also, each probe has only one sensor (at the tip), so the tip of the proble must be in the center of the meat...I'll get different readings even if it's an inch away. My understanding is that modern wireless probe thermometer has multiple sensors in each probe, so it'll give better readings. There's also the convenience of not having the probe cables draping over other stuff I'm grilling and getting caught when I move stuff around. At the very least I want a remote probe system to have a dedicated base that gives me the reading of each probe, as well as alarms/alerts when the temp gets outside the range. I sometimes do overnight brisket cooks on my pelet grill, so I sleep with my current base which will alert me if the heat dies or if there's a huge flare up or fire (hasn't happened yet!). A nice plus is being able to have the new system pair with an app on my phone if I want to make a run to the market during a cook (pellet grill is set up far enough away from house to mimize any danger from a fire). At a minimum, I want two probes; four probes is better than two, but I can always buy two sets of two-probe systems I guess. I've seen a two probe system on Amazon for as cheap as $40 with most of the features I mentioned; most of the 4-probe systems I've seen are about $150 or less. Anything under $200 is fine, but obviously I'd rather pay $100 if it has the same features and quality. Any advice on what system to buy or on what other features I should be looking at? submitted by /u/DeadBy2050 to r/pelletgrills [link] [comments]

He's not going to eat these porkchops. 😐
About a month ago I made a post here because my boyfriend didn't want to eat the porkchops I cooked for dinner. Well tonight I made porkchops again and he's not going to eat these either because we broke up and he moved out. I'm so much better off and I just wanted to thank you all for the kind words and advice, it was very eye opening to me. I wish that I could invite you all to dinner 🥰 ETA : Couple of notes: 1- The yellow stuff is smashed potatoes with cheese on top. 2- I swear that butter on the broccoli melted right after that picture LOL ETA part two: Some people have asked for recipes. I'm not a fancy cook and it isn't anything very special or original but here goes: For the porkchops, I take them out of the fridge 30 mins before I cook them so that they are room temperature. I salt them when I take them out too. Then I mix some flour with seasonings. This time I used salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and chili powder. I dredged the porkchops in the seasoned flour before frying them in a little oil over medium high heat. I do two or three minutes a side to get nice color then I drop the heat to low, put a lid on it and cook until my meat thermometer says they are 145 F inside. I remove them from the heat and let them rest three to five minutes, covered. For the smashed potatoes I boil the potatoes in salted water until they are fully cooked. Then I oil a sheet pan, smash the potatoes with a potato masher. You're not trying to make puree, it's not mashed potatoes, you are just smashing them once or twice each. Then I drizzle them with olive oil, add whatever seasonings I want and bake them in a very hot oven (425 or 450) until they are crispy (ten or fifteen minutes, watch them!) The kids wanted cheese on them so I put the cheese on two or three minutes before I took them out of the oven. submitted by /u/moonrabbit368 to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

Most reliable but affordable instant read thermometer?
Any suggestions on a reliable but affordable instant read thermometer? Specifically for cooking meat. I have recently gotten into brining my chicken breasts and it's been great! However, it can be hard for me to tell if the chicken is done or not because of how juicy the brine makes the chicken. My boomer in law doesn’t like that I use a meat thermometer.
Title says it all. He wants me to use my finger to poke the meat and decide when it’s done, which is fine, but to me the thermometer is superior to a finger poke, and I just like it better. Don’t understand why he cares so much. Edit: I’m seeing that a lot folks are getting caught up in which way is the “right” way, and those of you are missing the point of the post. Both ways work. The point is that I prefer my way and that is incensing to this particular boomer who thinks his way is the only right way. Second edit: I’m in agreement that thermometer is superior for sanitary and food safety reasons, which is why I prefer it. However, for someone that is skilled at finger poke, it does work a good percentage of the time, albeit not 100% of the time, and I realize that many restaurants use this method, and many restaurants use thermometer. Again, it seems like some of you are digressing into which method is the “right” way. Unless there’s a bunch of boomers on this thread, I’m starting to wonder if righteously discrediting the legitimacy of others’ methods is more widespread than just the boomer generation. submitted by /u/Ok_Entertainment5017 to r/BoomersBeingFools [link] [comments]

do you use a meat thermometer every single time?
I've been searching this sub for meat thermometer recommendations, got a few good ones so far, but I just never see anyone actually use them and of course my parents never did either. is it just something you get used to seeing? are thermometers only for amateurs? are there tips or anything I should be knowing? I can't lie, fear of undercooking meat has pushed me away from cooking meat altogether and I need to change that. Any kind of material- youtubes, guides, etc- for being able to cook meat by eye/feel/etc would be super handy. thanks! edit: awww! thanks for all the warm responses, I feel way less self-conscious using one now. Why is it so frowned upon to use a meat thermometer?
What's the harm? Relying only on feel and touch just seems like a big dick flex and even the best chefs get temps wrong quite often. Many times I've gone to nice steakhouses and my med-rare comes out medium or medium well. I've watched every episode of Hell's Kitchen and I don't think I've ever seen Ramsey touch a steak on the pass and determine if it's cooked properly. It's only after he slices it open that he yells at the kitchen. And there are many other instances that meat has been sent back because it was cooked wrong, so that means it made it past Ramsey or his sous chefs temp checks. submitted by /u/clarkkent1521 to r/HellsKitchen [link] [comments]

I don’t know who needs to read this, but if you do not own a meat thermometer go buy one now.
I got by for 5 years cooking without one. I never had food poisoning and food turned out good. I don’t know why I didn’t buy one. Was it pride or the challenge of guessing the doneness of meat? Perhaps it was growing up watching my mother and grandmother just naturally knowing the doneness of meat. 5 years ago I bought my first meat thermometer and never knew why I waited so long. The dishes you can make to perfect doneness completely remove any embarrassment that you may feel you would receive being seen using one. It seems obvious to me now, but a meat thermometer should be the first thing a person buys before learning to cook. You will be much more happy with your meals. You out so much effort into cooking, why risk over or under-doing a meal? submitted by /u/Totes_meh_Goats to r/Cooking [link] [comments]

The thermostat in my old utility vehicle is just a pull out meat thermometer.
