It takes a lot of nerve to order a cookbook, badly damage it, and then return it. I've taken out library books where people write notes next to the recipes. A meatloaf recipe said to add a chopped onion and some green peppers. Perhaps they should publish their own book. I've also found recipes cut out. In this case, write it down or snap a picture of it.

WELL - I'm overwelmed with all the responses. I can't keep up with them, so if I don't answer it doesn't mean your response isn't important to me. It will just take a while for me to digest everything everyone has written. THANKS! for all your replies!! I'm 83 years old. My grandmother died almost 40 years ago. When I was a kid, and even as a young man, I really liked her meatloaf. She didn't prepare it to be eaten warm/hot, but rather cold as a sandwich meat. It was very thick/heavy and very dark in color. It was almost the consistency of salami. But it was meatloaf made from beef and perhaps a small amount of pork. I never saw a written recipe that she had. I'm sure she made it so many times she knew it by heart. It was so good on fresh white bread with Hellman's mayonnaise. I have tried to replicate it over the years but have never come close. My family has been eating a lot of ground beef and pork lately, largely because they're the best bang for my buck. I'm running out of ideas from what I've been typically doing (eg: spaghetti, meatloaf, or tacos). As a lot of you know food is expensive right now, I was lucky enough to get a deer. I ground it up for ground meat. Basically when you cook it you just think it is normal ground meat, especially when you do recipes with spices like tacos. My issue is with me wife, we have two kids that are under 7. The oldest is fine eating it but my youngest hates it due to my wife. The first time I made some meatloaf with it my wife commented that it’s Bambi. She doesn’t hate the taste just when she knows it’s deer. I know this because she liked the tacos and then refused to eat it after my wife made another comment about Bambi. She was two tacos in already. My wife doesn’t like to eat it but I would think she would see that this is to save money and the food is fine. That our kids need protein and meat is so expensive right now. I have talked to her before but she keeps doing it. I want my daughter to actually have some red meat in her diet since we can’t afford to keep buying it. It came to a head today. I made some meat sauce and pasta. My youngest was already eating it and my wife came in and made a Bambi comment. She refused to eat the rest of her dinner. I had enough and told her I expect her to start working overtime for food since she stops people from eating the deer meat. My grandmother was born in 1925 and had a doctorate in home economics. I just learned that her recipe was chosen by Heinz or Hunt's or some other big brand in a contest and then used on their bottles. Anyone happen to have any knowledge of it here? The dream would be one of the bottles, but I'm interested to know what the recipe may have been as well! Thanks in advance. UPDATE for anyone checking back: Both KraftHeinz and Conagra (Hunt) have replied that they have no archives and no way of identifying the recipe. No family members have admitted to having the recipe. I plan to taste test the two likeliest recipes (identified by the helpful folks in this thread!) and will report back with any additional news. Thank you all for your interest and your help! UPDATE: Several months after posting we made the three most likely vintage meatloaf recipes to see if anything rang a bell with my dad. We made the Heinz Classic Meatloaf, which seemed like the strongest possibility, the Hunt's 15-Minute Meatloaf, and the Meatloaf, Barbecue Style from 1957 which uses Hunt's tomato sauce. He said nothing rang a bell, but he did remember that the original had green bell peppers in it (like the Heinz Classic). My grandmother had a doctorate in home economics, so I feel like adding something green is probably something she'd do.
