Why does everyone here despise being a merch? I can understand how some (almost all) of you guys truly feel about being a merch… maybe the pay is not enough for your area, and I understand. But what other job will give you unlimited OT, all around freedom without constantly being told what to do or hounded? Currently in the Pennsylvania/Delaware area im making more a week than most people with a full on degree… for just putting SODAS out on shelves… Before Pepsi I was a merch for 10 years at my previous employer. Went to my local Hobby Lobby a week or two ago to look for some craft things I needed, only to see the summer stuff and 4th of July stuff reduced to 1 small area, while the Halloween and Fall themed stuff was already taking up 8 different aisles. I'm rarely one to complain about stores putting stuff out early, but really? Decorations for holidays thats are almost 6 months away? I don't know about anyone else, but this strikes me as borderline delusional by their marketing team. I'm looking for a job so I thought of applying for a part-time Merchandising Execution Associate at Home Depot. I was wondering if anyone who knows or works in Merchandising could tell me more about what it's like? I saw the video online and it seems like you just make sure the shelves are stocked and put up displays, but is that all there is to it? Do you do that for all different departments or are you assigned to an area? How many hours can I expect to get if my availability is pretty open? I see people on here saying they barely get any hours or they get their hours cut and it's a struggle. Then I saw another thread about someone working 7 straight days with no day off. How often does that happen? Is it also as easy to get hired as people say? I see threads mentioning they just get an email about a job offer without ever interviewing. edit: The role I'm looking at is the Merchandising Execution Associate. edit 2: How does this compare to the Customer Service/Sales Associate role? I wouldn't mind working in the garden department or something like that but I don't see a Garden Associate role listed. How do these Sales Associate roles work? Am I just one of the guys who stands in one of the aisles and helps people/asks if they need help? Been posting a lot of side hustles on here based on my own experience over the years and this is my one for today....merchandising. It's a part time hustle that simply involves replenishing stock from companies that control their own inventory (ie. not restocked by the store staff). It can be a wide variety of merchandise, such as.... - Salty Snacks - Beverages - Chocolate bars - Greeting Cards - Impulse Display (gum, magazines, etc) You can, of course, be the main merchandiser who drives the truck with the full inventory, but I'm talking about being the part time restocker, as the head person can't go to every store every day to refresh stock, so they hire out locals who live near the stores to just go out and do it using extra stock they keep in the back storeroom. My job was to restock the chip aisle for just one company, but for all the grocery stores in town. A box of chips doesn't weigh much, so it was super easy and they paid for a minimum 3 hours per, even if it only took an hour to do. It was an easy weekend side hustle. Got a little busy during holiday weekends and football season, but nothing too crazy. The one I recommend though, if you can get it, is with Coca-Cola, as they pay the highest of all the companies, plus benefits, even for part time workers. In my area they are always hiring because they need people due to their products being in every store. The last ones they hired was a little old couple where he would bring out the cases and she would put the bottles on the shelf. They must have been at least 60, but they needed the work and it pays well. Merchandising can also include putting out signs and displays, but I only did that once. It's good money and I got a raise every year. That was years ago, but I still recommend it to anyone looking for an easy side hustle. I have done almost 3 weeks of training so far, each day shadowing a sales rep. My trainers are all great but I feel so stupid and slow everyday. It feels like it just isn't clicking. Everything I do is clumsy and slow. It's like I can't make any right decisions. I always feel I need to ask my trainer what to do next, I have no self autonomy, I question every decision. I have to fight the urge to just follow them around all day constantly asking what to do. They sent me to a Giant on my own and I was so lost. The backroom was packed unlike the other times we went together. No jack available, no room to put stuff anywhere. The job feels so overwhelming and I'm scared I'm just not going to cut it when I'm on my own. Are these normal feelings to have 3 weeks in? Being a Merchandiser is the worst job I have ever had, I knew what I was signing up for because I had someone in my family work at Pepsi as a Merchandiser early morning, long days, physical work. The work itself is not bad, boring but whatever pays the bills. The real issue I have with this job are 2 major things I'm a floater, so I show up to stores that other people service on their days off. Let me tell you not once did I have a backroom that was organized and neat, every single account was always a f'ing mess. For the first 2 months I would always make it as neat as possible to try and help them out but now I think the people seem to just not care maybe because they think that the next person will take care of their mess, meaning me. For the last month I said F it and stopped doing that, waste of time not my problem. Ran deliveries and I was off to the next store, didn't even touch backstock. Boss man didn't like that so much. 0 forklift training! Might be different where you guys work I know some people don't even use forklifts but where I work it is a must. Product is always in the rack and needs to be pulled down. Only problem is I have never used a forklift in my life. Mind you I really tried my best to learn it on my own but just could never really teach myself how to use it. Since I'm not even certified I'm not even supposed to be on it. I talked to upper management and my boss about it for 2 weeks straight. Everyday non stop asking for training. I was promised time and time again but it never came. Got to the point where my boss said to me, "if you don't feel comfortable using the lift don't use it." Basically saying don't do your job. So I took his advice and store after store would reach out and complain to my company saying I wasn't doing my job. I then would get texts, phone calls, pictures of empty shelfs etc. In my mind I wanted to get to the 3 month mark. For some reason I thought it would get better, news flash it just got worse. With it being the start of 100 days of summer it is just way too much. When I gave my 2 weeks my boss gave me the option to have my own route and he said that he will train me on the lift. I then said show me how to use the forklift then I might consider staying. That was a week ago and still no forklift training. Actually next week (my last week) my boss decided it was a great time to take the whole week off. (PTO) If you guys are interested in becoming a merchandiser please make sure you get the proper training before they send you on the floor. Don't be so accepting and do what they want you to do, because they will throw you into hell. The second you don't like someone go to your supervisor and I'm telling you it should make a big difference. That's my number 1 piece of advice for someone that is interested in this job, put your foot down and don't get walked over. Know what you want and make it very clear. I started merchandising for Pepsi back in December and....it was ok for the most part. I was part time up until about March, I believe, then I got full time. Honestly, I just don't want to be a merchandiser anymore....it sucks. I genuinely didn't mind the physical aspect of it, but when you're busting your ass just to keep yourself on time for the next store, day by day, week by week, it starts taking a toll on you. I thought it'd be nice way to keep active; I've suffered from being overweight my whole life and that's caused severe depression and anxiety in me and I feel like this job is just making it worse. Every store I've worked, I've seen Coke, 7-up and Frito Lay with multiple people servicing the 2 big stores in our schedules: Walmart and Krogers. I've also seen multiple merchandisers for said companies servicing smaller, easier stores. But for some reason at Pepsi, we're on our own and when I was in training, I was taught to NOT be the guy asking for help all the time, as if having help is some for of taboo. And yet, as a part time, I was bouncing around various stores and would occasionally help out a full timer maybe once a week and the stores would look nicer and be done quicker because of it. I just don't understand why we can't have at least 2 people per route. ​ My start time is 5:30. I had a Walmart first and the load didn't get there until 8:30. I asked for help to keep myself on schedule and there was literally nobody available to help until 1:00 pm at best. So I busted out 7 pallets by 12:00 pm, essentially sprinting and burning myself out before my other stores, and even by then, I still had several carts of front cooler/single serve items that could've gone out but I ended up doing the bare minimum and leaving because I NEEDED to get to my next store to work the load. And not that it was his fault because he had his own loads to deal with but my help didn't really get there until 2:30 when I was almost done with the 2nd store and from then on we did the last 2 together which went quickly because we were together. But I didn't get home until 4:30 that day. And that's slowly becoming a normal thing now. Meanwhile, on my days off, when I make time to get groceries, I'll see multiple sales reps across the stores working it all together. I just hate this no help attitude for the merchandisers. You can work 7-12 pallets on your own and leave one case or forget one little shelf space or one little cooler and the sales reps will make you feel like the worst person because of it. I don't think I can handle it anymore. The pay and the benefits don't even feel worth it because of this stress I'm feeling but what else am I going to do? I kind of trapped myself, thinking this would be a simple enough job to just stock shelves but there's just a crap ton of obstacles that will get in your way in the process and its not an enjoyable experience.
