I’ve noticed a lot of gaming setups on YouTube and Reddit using MSI laptops. Is it mainly because of the performance, cooling, or pricing? Curious to hear from people who actually own one. WARNING: MSI just destroyed my $4,000 flagship laptop during an RMA and is refusing to replace it. (Raider 18 HX)
Update: 3/26/2026 So I exchanged it for a working floor model, but after about 2 weeks the floor model failed due to a bad fan and the GPU chip died (was getting 2fps - now well over 60, in many cases ever well over 120+ and butter smooth). I finally got in touch with an MSI representative through BBB, his name was Henry - and they finally offered me what I really needed and was asking for - a model swap with a new unit. I got the 5090 with the AMD instead. And Wholly cow the difference is MASSIVE!!!! I am very happy with the new AMD unit where I was miserable with the intel one. It doesn't crash all the time anymore. Finally I can load long CHATGPT history without crashing, and I can play games at smooth FPS (still had to make a minor tweak and disable V-sync and had a few very minor driver issues with AMD but all pretty minor in comparison - this is just a software bug probably with some of the drivers, I'll figure those out). So far it's working SO much better. I can actually get stuff done finally. Note the AMD model fans run a lot more/louder, but this a good thing, it means it runs cooler. I am totally okay with the louder fans since it seems to protect the computer better. And the games are buttery smooth compared to the Intel, so this confirms the intel chips have serious manufacturing flaws. -- TL;DR: Bought a $4k+ MSI Raider 18 HX (RTX 5090, Core Ultra 9). It was a lemon out of the box (constant BSODs, unusable DPC latency). Sent it in for RMA. MSI returned it to me with a scratched screen, a gouged chassis, and a "new" motherboard that is completely caked in dust. The original issue isn't even fixed, and now they are refusing to replace it. The Full Nightmare: I am a professional who needs top-tier hardware for Unreal Engine and live audio/video production. I dropped over $4,000 on MSI’s absolute top-of-the-line Raider 18 HX. Out of the box, the laptop was completely unusable. • Insane DPC Latency: Audio pops, clicks, and severe UI lag (over 3800µs spikes in LatencyMon from wdf01000.sys and iaStorVD.sys). • Constant BSODs: Repeated 0xC1 (SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION) and 0x1 crashes. • Overheating: The chassis gets scorchingly hot at idle, with fans instantly ramping to max. After exhausting every software fix (clean OS, BIOS tweaks, VBS disabled, fresh drivers), I sent it in for RMA. The "Repair" (Look at the photos): MSI claimed they replaced the motherboard. I got the laptop back today, and I am absolutely furious. They damaged my property: The screen is scratched, and there is a massive chunk of plastic gouged out of the chassis corner. They lied about the repair: I popped the bottom panel off to check their work. The "new" motherboard and cooling assembly are entirely caked in thick dust. They either gave me a filthy refurbished board, or they lazily slapped my old, dust-choked fans onto a new board. It’s still broken: Booted it up, ran LatencyMon, and immediately hit massive red latency spikes and crashes again. The Aftermath: I leave for a professional tour in less than a month and need a working machine. I contacted MSI to demand an Advanced Replacement because they actively destroyed my laptop. They refused. Even worse? When I tried to escalate the issue with a formal demand letter to their corporate support ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])), the emails literally bounced back as "Address not found." I am currently filing a BBB complaint and taking this up with Micro Center to try and force a buyout, but I wanted to warn everyone here. If you buy a flagship MSI machine and it breaks, their RMA department won't just fail to fix it—they will physically destroy it and leave you out to dry. Has anyone else dealt with this? Are there any MSI reps lurking here who can actually escalate a ruined RMA? submitted by /u/Active_Objective_491 to r/MSI_Gaming [link] [comments]

Is MSI a good choice for gaming?
May be a dumb question but I, personally, have yet to buy a laptop for myself, always used a family members to game, currently through an aging HP Envy M7 Notebook & I think essentially anything at this point, would be an upgrade tbh. I have heard MSI is preferable by a few friends & was wondering if a MSI Katana would be a good choice for a new laptop submitted by /u/FalseUniversity7835 to r/MSILaptops [link] [comments]

I water-cooled my gaming laptop
So my laptop has always had one big problem: heat. (MSI GF6611UE katana 3060 i7) It used to thermal throttle all the time. I even bought a “powerful” laptop cooler that pushed air into the chassis, but the side effect was brutal. The added air pressure made the stock fans wear out in 6–18 months, and I still had to underclock just to keep temps reasonable. Something had to change. The Idea 💡 Water cooling but for a laptop. I decided to build my own external water-cooling system, while keeping it as budget-friendly as possible. How It Works Inside the laptop, I added a flat copper pipe (hand-bent AC copper pipe, hammered flat after ~5 attempts over a month). This pipe sits directly on top of the existing CPU/GPU heatpipes, acting as a secondary loop. It’s connected to soft tubing that runs to an external 240mm radiator to cool the water. The cooled water then circulates back in. The Parts Radiator: 240mm Reservoir: an old plastic honey bottle 🐝 Pump: Silent fountain pump (rated for continuous 30,000 hours) Fans: 2x Arctic P12 PWM PST Fan/Pump control: Generic 12V PWM motor controller + 4-pin PWM fan controller Thermal interface: Upisiren thermal putty (fills gap between laptop pipes & added copper pipe) Mounting: 1.2mm aluminum wire (to tie the pipe in place) End Result It works surprisingly well — temps are way lower, no more throttling, and I don’t have to worry about killing my laptop fans every year. I could write a whole post about the struggles (pipe bending alone almost made me give up 😅), but I’ll save that for another time. Just wanted to share the project here. Note: Above text is organized into this neat article thanks to chatgpt. Edit: Adding more info 📊 Build Cost & Results A few people asked about parts and performance, so here’s the breakdown: Parts & Costs: Radiator (Amazon) – ₹3,200 Upisiren Thermal Putty (also used on memory chips) – ₹1,800 Arctic P12 PWM PST Fans (x2) – ₹1,200 AC Copper Pipe 8mm (local shop) – ₹600 Water Pump (AD20P-1230C from Techtonics) – ₹450 Pneumatic Tubes (12mm & 8mm, local plumbing shops) – ₹200 Pneumatic Push Fittings (Amazon) – ₹120 4-pin 12V PC Fan Controller – ₹450 1.2mm Aluminum Wire – ₹195 Generic PWM Controller (local shop) – ₹50 Wires, Switch, 12V Adapter (local shop) – ₹150 💰 Total Cost: ~₹8,500 Performance (Before vs After): Before: CPU thermal throttled at 95°C, clock speed dropped from 4.2GHz → 3.1GHz. GPU also throttled at 86°C, losing clock speed. This was with high-speed laptop fans and a KLIM Mistral Cooling Pad (now discontinued). After (Water Cooling): No more thermal throttling. Under benchmarks, CPU sustains turbo at 4.2GHz, with temps maxing around 90°C. In actual games, CPU never crosses 85°C (even in CPU-heavy titles). Yet to see GPU cross 72 degrees on 100% usage. submitted by /u/debjoy7 to r/IndianGaming [link] [comments]

I purchased an Acer Predator Helios 300 laptop in 2021 for $1500 in 2021. Honestly, it gave kind of terrible gaming performance for its specs since it had single-channel RAM but it worked fine for my simulations and college work. Recently when it crossed its 3-year mark, its motherboard is gone and repair costs are almost $650. This made me wonder why I even bothered purchasing a "premium" line product. Do gaming laptops generally have such a bad life cycle? Really stressed out rn because it was my main productivity and gaming setup. I can't expect my parents to buy me one ( currently left my job, father also laid off). Is it a brand issue or a use case issue? I am trying to avoid this mistake. Thanks Edit: Specs: rtx 3060 100W. Intel i7 -10840H 16gb RAM I was using my laptop for simply browsing and it stopped working. Now Acer service centre saying something is wrong with the motherboard. Edit 2: Thanks for all the suggestions. Really helpful! To anyone seeing in the future, to summarize: It seems I was a bit unlucky. a lot of people have laptops that have been running well for many years. A few people have pointed out that Acer and MSI are kinda shit in quality but others have refuted that. submitted by /u/manu_jain24 to r/GamingLaptops [link] [comments]

My dead gaming laptop turned back on after 2 years
My laptop which is MSI GE722QD APACHE having a problem where it cannot be turned on even with battery or without battery. Then i sent it to the well known repair shop in my area and they said that the motherboard is dead and need to be replace but its quite expensive, so i bought a new laptop rather than to fix it. Today, i wanted to throw away the laptop and plugged in for the last time to check and guess what… it turned back on😭. So my question is, is it reliable for me to reused it back? And what are the causes for that? Im planning to fix the dead pixel screen but i dont know is it worth to do or not bcs the 17inch screen is quite expensive and im afraid if repaired, the same problem may arise. Thank you (I bought the laptop on 2016) submitted by /u/Motor_Pollution_7135 to r/laptops [link] [comments]

A friend of mine hit the jackpot on a gaming laptop order.
I've been building PCs for a good portion of my life now and have gotten several friends into it as well. Most of my friends are into gaming, with a majority having PCs they built themselves but a few have stuck to consoles. One of my good friends that's been a consoles gamer exclusively has been looking into getting a gaming laptop recently as he travels a lot for work and has wanted to be able to play some games with me and our other friends while he's in a hotel room. So a few of us went over some options with him, most of which we all found to be a bit expensive for what they offered, and he finally decided to pull the trigger and buy one. He told us he ordered an MSI Katana 15 for about $1,000. Not the best deal I thought but whatever, he'll be happy with it. I went over to his place after he got it to hang out and help him get things set up before he heads out of town. As soon as I saw him bring out the laptop I knew it wasn't what he ordered. Turns out MSI sent him their Titan GT77, a $5,000+ laptop. He panicked for a few minutes while he looked up his order and both the receipt and his bank statement show he paid $999 to MSI. Needless to say he's beyond excited and I was completely floored. I've had some shipping errors in my favor before (and some RMA's that have resulted in upgrades) but never anything even close to this big. Anyone else every have the order-screwup gods bless them with something like this? I feel like he's now used up all his luck for the next decade. Edit: Holy hell I wasn't expecting this to get as much attention as it has. Thanks for all the replies and stories! Some of you all have definitely been blessed my the order-screwup gods! Although I think the real winners are the ones that got the extra chicken nuggets (and the 4 bonus vaccums). I had the same idea as some of the suggestions offered and talked to my buddy about selling it, getting a cheaper (but still good) laptop and using the rest to build a desktop but he's more than happy with keeping the laptop. We also dug into the warranty stuff and amazingly the serial number on the laptop and receipt match so he signed up for the warranty and MSI's site is showing it as the GT77. I'm guessing this was more than just someone grabbing the wrong item off a shelf and there was some incorrect database entries, but he's fully covered under warranty. He takes off tomorrow evening for two weeks and is super stoked to be able to play some games with us while he's away. Gonna start up a co-op run of BG3. We also tested it out hooked up to his TV. He has an LG C3 77" that he plays his PS5 and XBox Series X on and my God does it look amazing with this laptop. The only thing I told him to keep an eye on were the thermals for it, as I know a lot of these higher end laptops can get pretty dang warm, but with what we tried out everything seems to be well within comfortable temp ranges. I'm still kind of in shock at the whole thing, and I know he's beyond happy but I don't think he really knows just how well he made out on this. I've been looking in to getting a new 4K monitor, here's hoping they ship me 4 of them when I do get around to ordering one. submitted by /u/DevOverkill to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

Newcomers to PC gaming: No, a $400 laptop is not going to run anything well.
Cheap Gaming Laptop Pick two. You aren't going to get a cheap laptop that plays games well, you aren't going to get a gaming laptop for cheap. A tower PC is always the better choice for PC gaming. However: if you simply must have a laptop, but also want to game, there's a simple solution: Why not both? Buy a cheap laptop that does what you need it to, and buy a proper PC for gaming. You'll save money by not having to buy a whole new computer when you want to upgrade, and if you lose your netbook it's pocket change to replace and you still have a backup PC to work on (and backup your work onto, because you're diligent like that.) You can also play low-end games on your laptop if you want to game while traveling etc. So there you have it. We shouldn't need to go over this in another 240 threads, right? Right. edit: I'd just like to insert here that "anything" is a bit broad, and that gaming is possible on a cheap laptop if you stick to low-end stuff (and there's plenty of fun to be had in that area, my personal recommendation is Brutal Doom.) This thread was mostly a response to the regularly repeated threads where people ask if a netbook can run Skyrim on Ultra. edit 2: I'm getting a lot of requests for decent, cheap builds. Here's one created by /u/tamarockstar: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks Type Item Price CPU AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor $109.99 @ Newegg Motherboard Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard $49.99 @ Microcenter Memory Patriot G Series Sector 5 Edition 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory $49.25 @ TigerDirect Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $64.95 @ Amazon Video Card MSI GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB Video Card $119.99 @ Newegg Case NZXT Gamma Classic (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $29.99 @ Amazon Power Supply Fractal Design Integra R2 500W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply $48.00 @ Newegg Optical Drive Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer $14.99 @ Newegg Total Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available. $487.15 Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-22 01:22 EDT-0400 If you're up for a little extra, I personally would replace the 650Ti with a 660Ti or 760. The price does not include Windows, keyboard/mouse or a monitor. While you'll need to buy the first two, if you have a HDTV, you have a monitor (make sure you set it to game mode!) If you play on a HDTV, I would highly recommend also buying an Xbox360 Controller for Windows, so you can play in a more relaxed position. If you already have a wireless controller for an existing Xbox, get yourself a Wireless Receiver for it instead of buying a whole new controller (if you already have a wired Xbox controller, just plug it in and it will work.) Once you've got that bad boy together, you can get yourself a Chromebook for $200. and you're way better off than if you spent $1000-$2000 on an ugly, heavy, easily stolen "gaming" laptop. edit 3: For better bang for your buck, here's a couple of builds with AMD Radeon cards substituted for the NVIDIA 650Ti (thanks /u/CSSFlame!): PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks Type Item Price CPU AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor $119.99 @ Newegg Motherboard Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard $58.98 @ Newegg Memory Kingston Blu Red Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory $48.96 @ NCIX US Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $54.99 @ Newegg Video Card PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 XT 2GB Video Card $139.99 @ Newegg Case NZXT Gamma Classic (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $29.99 @ Amazon Power Supply Corsair CX 430W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply $22.50 @ Newegg Optical Drive Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer $17.99 @ Newegg Total Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available. $473.39 Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-23 01:07 EDT-0400 PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks Type Item Price CPU AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor $119.99 @ Newegg Motherboard Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard $58.98 @ Newegg Memory Kingston Blu Red Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory $48.96 @ NCIX US Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $54.99 @ Newegg Video Card MSI Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card $179.99 @ Newegg Case NZXT Gamma Classic (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $29.99 @ Amazon Power Supply Corsair CX 430W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply $22.50 @ Newegg Optical Drive Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer $17.99 @ Newegg Total Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available. $513.39 Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-23 01:07 EDT-0400 submitted by /u/ExogenBreach to r/pcgaming [link] [comments]
