Greetings everyone. I'm one of the new part-time moderators here on r/sneakerhead and I thought I'd introduce myself by posting the sneakers I currently wear. They are numbered so if anyone has a question about a specific model and colorway, please refer to the number for everyone and I'll answer any questions. This rotation is cut down from my maximum number of pairs I had about 2021, with about 95 pair in their boxes stored in various closets. Two years ago my wife and I decided to remodel our master suite, mostly because after 20+ years of marriage we wanted a new king size bed, rather than a queen, and we'd saved a bit for it. I took that opportunity to purchase clear, locking, magnetic door sneaker cases. They came in packs of 12, and for my closet area I could fit 36 with 4 pair sitting atop the cases. A deal was struck. I'd cut down to 40 pair. It was timely since I have many nieces and nephews, and two are twins AND sneakerheads that had just turned 14 and were closing in on my shoe size. I took 20 pair to their party and let them each keep 5 pair each. All the rest went to eBay and easily paid for some updated matching wardrobe and furniture. I'm also one of the moderators of the reinvented r/SneakerFits that underwent significant changes over the past two years and I post my own Sneaker Fits there regularly. All of you are welcome to post a sneaker fit either here or on that sub, but it has more strict rules for the photographs and post, so please read them if you visit. When it comes to being a sneakerhead, I believe I bring a host of knowledge to this subreddit. I purchased my first pair of Nike Air Force 1 High in 1982 with money I'd earned doing yard chores. I wore Pony High tops the next year, then some Air Pegasus that didn't last. Then in 1985, well we all know what happened then, Jordans. I got BREDs and Chicago AJKOs. I was in the 7th grade and played football, basketball, and ran track - all horribly. My ONLY game was my shoe game. Throughout the rest of my school days I amassed an impressive early collection of Jordan, Air Force, Air Max, and my personal favorite every Nike Air Trainer, along with a few Reebok, PONY and ASICS. Mostly this was because I lived at a Summer Camp and Nature Preserve that my parents managed. It had a working farm and I got paid well at a young age for every type of chore. My Dad insisted he'd pay for decent school clothes, so we worked it out that I would simply go buy whatever I wanted, then he'd reimburse me for a rather basic amount. I was much better off that over 95% of my peers in Appalachia even though we didn't have MTV and my parents didn't make much money, they were smart with it. I even had one of my high school senior photos done with some of my shoe collection in 1990. Throughout my college years in the early 1990's grunge and Nike ACG were my choices, along with extreme poverty that is common for those on academic scholarships so I had to make Air Mowabbs last. Only after some post-graduate studies and a couple of years into my first job about 1998 did I resume buying sneakers on a regular basis. I am one of the earliest members of Nike.com, own a pair of the first round of Nike iD produced, and have on my career travels met significant people like my personal sneaker idol Tinker Hatfield, plus Peter Moore, PJ Tucker, and the kids from the 2023 Doernbecher Freestyle where I bought a signed pair of Garrett Amerson Nike ACG Mountain Fly 2 Low, number 4 in the photo above. While I truly like many Adidas, New Balance, ASICS, and countless other brands, as a collector I've always simply liked Nike. For a hobby I stick to Nike since it is only a hobby just like comic book collecting, which I do a little, and stick to Marvel, mostly X-Men. I also have a few classic cars, a tradition in my wife's family. She has a 1983 Chrysler LeBaron Town & Country convertible in Ivory and fake wood paneling - the one that talks to you and was seen in Seinfeld as the Jon Voight car. I have a 1959 Ford Galaxie Skyliner, the hardtop retractible in Sea Foam and Eggshell with the F/E 352 Interceptor - the one with dual Hairline and Galaxie 500 tags, no trunk, and a curb weight over 7,000 lbs as a 2-door. [Sneaker Collecting] Air Jordan 1 Mids: the budget model that I promise is interesting Mass market paperbacks. The toploader Wiis that don’t get internet. Universal Studios. Zella leggings. The Xboxes that don’t have disc drives. The 2DS. AAPE. We’re all familiar with the cheaper version of a supposedly better product. For some of us, it’s the only version we ever know. Shoes aren’t so different, but it’s not unreasonable to think there’d be choice footwear with which a “casual version” is out of the question. Some things are too precious to some billion dollar companies. Why do a budget model when Nike, purveyors of alleged cool shoes, are apparently committed to making their most recognizable SKU, the Air Jordan 1, easier to purchase? Newsflash, Walter Cronkite: buying Jordans is still hard So, the Air Jordan 1 is (say the line, Bart) probably the most exalted athletic shoe of all time. Every piece of sneaker journalism ever written will declare this at some point, and if you read that sort of thing I apologize for making you read that sentence again but I cannot yet, in all my pretense, argue otherwise. It really ought to be the first image on the Wikipedia page for sneakers, instead of not being there at all like it bafflingly isn’t. For decades and despite being one of thirty-five models, it’s the same shorthand for hip it was upon its 1985 release. But reiterating its popularity feels like running in circles (faster than a normal person, you see, because of these Air Jordans I’m wearing). Were it as famous and pervasive as I so claim, I wouldn’t have to, right? At the same time I feel like I must, because we live in a very different time for buying Air Jordans than we ever have. Once upon a time, it was about as easy as buying any other shoe. Even beyond the golden age, when Air Jordan 1s could be found sitting on outlet racks, buying a pair should you so choose was as easy as getting the concert tickets you really wanted. Just be there. And I say concert tickets, because that’s not so cut and dry these days either. There was, in times growing ever foggier, a point where buying Air Jordans was not the invisible lottery it is now. Sometimes it may feel like we’re inching back towards old times, but maybe that’s the economic recession talking. You’d hear stories about the new 1s or the new 4s dropping on a Saturday and all the cool kids showing up to school on Monday, sporting coolness’s standard issue. Buying 1s right now? Let me walk you through my process. November 19th, 2022. New Air Jordan 1s are coming up, and it’s a much celebrated ordeal to be sure. It’s the Lost and Found variant, a faux-retro take on the always desired Chicago colorway. I spilled my feelings on these in a scuffles thread (months ago, which means it basically never happened). I don’t love them conceptually or in practice, but come on, dude. It’s the Chicagos. If I don’t at least try, who am I? So I do a couple things: >set notifications for the SNKRS app, Nike’s side project for their more popular releases so the regular Nike site does not shit itself when you’re just trying to buy some socks. >Enter raffles. Supposing you live somewhere with sneaker shoppes, there’s a decent chance they’re also getting the Jordans, and they will also be running raffles. For your best chances, enter more than one. You may need to do some driving should you win. >Enter with multiple accounts. A hypothetical sneaker buying commission would deem this cheating, but it’s not cracked down the same as botting. Simple: have more than one account so you can enter a raffle more than once. Maybe get friends and family to enter on your behalf. I know people with double-digit accounts. Life’s a dirty game. This all sounds like a lot of effort for shoes. Debatably, anything beyond going to a store page and checking out is too much. And you could easily argue it’s all fruitless anyway, because guess what I don’t have. Nike must've caught on to this. People want Jordan 1s, but the steps taken to get Jordan 1s may mean coulda-been customers don’t bother. The problem goes like this: how do you meet demand with a product whose allure, critically, is a lack of supply? Too careful, and you run the risk of losing demand. How do you balance that, or, how do you sell Jordan 1s without necessarily selling Jordan 1s? The answer, as Nike found in the early 2000s, was to sell Jordan 1s. Not Jordan 1s, but Jordan 1s. Given the choice between the two of you… In economics, Shrinkflation is the practice of masking inflation with miniscule reductions in product offered. Example: Pringles cans are shorter now. Did you notice? Be it foodstuffs or home goods or any packaged finite, so long as the reduction in volume is small enough that the customer doesn’t notice, you can continue to sell without having to change the reliable, trusted price. In 2001, Nike invented… some version of this. This is the Air Jordan 1 Mid. The difference between the two, like shrinkflation albeit with a differing motivation, is to make the change small enough that a consumer won’t tell. Let’s prove it: That hyperlink you just clicked on was not a Jordan 1 Mid. That was a Jordan 1 High. This is a Jordan 1 Mid. What exactly make a Mid different from a High (OG) is hard to say, even if you know literally what. Occam’s Razor being that Mids are shorter than Highs but taller than Lows. While this works just fine, the degree to which Mids are a Mid is not so simple. In terms of size, we can look at the lace holes. A High will have nine, while Mids will have eight (note: J1 Mids released from 2001-2003 still had nine lace holes, but the height reduction remains the same). So we have a shoe that is purposefully shorter than its older brother, yet not by a totally obvious amount. The tongue also sees a change: Mids have a consistent Jumpman Air tag while highs have… well it depends, really. Sometimes it’s a half tag, sometimes it’s a full tag, sometimes there’s no Jumpman, you’ll have to ask Phil how he’s feeling that morning. This is where delineating shoe silhouettes feels like splitting hairs. In the collecting/resell space, however, the absence or inclusion of an extra lace hole is the difference between some hundreds of dollars and any interest at all from customers. To be clear, I don’t think the creation of the Jordan 1 Mid is a literal example of literal Shrinkflation. I bring it up to put us in the correct frame of mind. When you got a product where some scarcity is desirable, you risk deflating all interest. How much someone may want something can and is affected by how long they will have to wait. And what of the really early balkers? People who may want Air Jordan 1s in a wild hair moment, like after watching The Last Dance or Spider-verse, see what the average SKU tends to go for, and give up then and there? That’s money Nike could have earned, and the pennies that got away regularly keep Phil Knight turning in his bed (I’m imagining his bed has, like, gold leaf trim and a big swoosh on the duvet). Hence, the Mids. But why Mids? Why Mids?? Why Mids??? By pure release numbers, the Mid puts the High to shame. You’re spoiled for choice, and yet there’s really nobody who exclusively buys Mids. No hardcore Mid fans. And why would you be? It’s the uncanny valley of Jordan 1. Forget why someone would ultimately buy the Mids over the Highs (it’s money) why do the Mids still exist? Jordan 1 Mids are not the first of their kind. The mind goes to Vans, their crowd-pleasing sk-8s also packing a medium size. Doc Martens, those have a mid, same as Timberlands and Air Force 1s. Adidas, yeah, they’re doing mids. I won’t pretend I don’t get it. When McDonald’s is having me choose between seven fries and way too many fucking fries, I’m going medium every time. But Air Jordan goes retro high top and calls it macaroni; they are marketed as the ultimate of ultimates. Why sell a slightly less ultimate… thing? The most casual of casuals may buy Mids unaware they are a mass-market version, at least conceptually, but are those casuals expected to buy all these mids? One would think variety of this kind is flirting with collectors. Which would mean Mids are also intended for people already buying Highs. Those scary Sneakerheads you hear so much about. But do Sneakerheads like Mids? Sneakerheads do not like Mids In writing about the Mids last year for Input, Andrea Carrillo said, “scoring a High doesn’t just complete an outfit, it’s a stamp of victory, either in winning a raffle or having the funds to buy a shoe that’s often sold at lavish resale prices. Because of the work needed to secure a High, settling for a more available Mid is deemed a consolation prize and a laughable defeat…” That’s, fundamentally, that. Mids are exiled for crimes of not being their older brother, I’m sure a lot of us can relate. Regardless of what the shoe is supposed to be, the fact is Michael Jordan never wore Mids on court. That’s the rub a Jordan needs to have to legitimize itself fully. Michael Jordan didn’t wear Air Jordan 1s, he wore Air Jordans 1s. Keeping up? Maybe collectors’d like ‘em more if Mids were treated as a genuine option with regards to color, but they aren’t. You would think Highs and Mids would share colorways. You would think Highs, Mids, and Lows would all share colorways. You would think that. You would believe it to be true since choice Highs and Lows share colorways, choice Mids and Lows share colorways. And yet, broadly, all three levels seem to be off doing their own thing. If there’s a Mid colorway exactly like a High colorway, it’s by coincidence. Take the Chicago. Red, white, black. Real easy to do, yet Nike has a hell of a time doing it. It’s on purpose, I know, but having Chicago Mids would go some way towards proving the model as a genuine option. And there are Chicago Mids, assuming you can walk fast enough that nobody notices. The “Chicago” Mids aren’t Chicagos. You’ll notice the red heel is absent. Wouldn’t want the Chicagos to be utterly Chicagos, would we? Again, this is different from the multiple styles of a sk-8, because in that instance you can get the same colorway regardless of style. I imagine someone cracked on the Poscas could fix this Mid up quick into something more Chicago, but it’ll never be as tall as it’s more popular brother. Oh, but what about a reverse Chicago? Awesome, that means nothing about this shoe isn’t totally confused. See, now I just feel bad for it. Used the correct formula but got the wrong answer. Ah, great, this is more like it, Chicago with a red hell and a… black, toe box. Are Mid designers allowed to look at pictures of the Highs or do they have to construct these colorways from memory? Okay, the “Chicago Flipped.” What happened here is the black from the collar kinda sorta poured out into the… middle. And the swoosh is white now. The sole is white. Inspired! So, it's hard for the sneaker diehard to accept Mids as a genuine option because it’s hardly a serious one. These are colorways that cheated off the High’s homework and changed some of the answers so the teacher wouldn’t notice. All they had to do was remove one lace hole, and the fact that they won’t just do this leads me to believe that Nike does not want Mids to have any chance of stealing the Highs thunder, even though fundamentally they cannot. But there is another reason often cited in speculative sneaker journalism, and that’s material. It’s a long-held and dubiously true belief that Mids are made with cheaper materials than the Highs. The wording is never too specific, and most of which comes down to finger feel, but the main source of complaint is the leather. This I can attest to. The leathers on a Jordan 1 Mid do not age like the Highs. It is noticeably thinner, wrinkles like the pleather jackets at Urban Outfitters, and a rub of the thumb generates a very synthetic smoothness as compared to the squeak of something higher grade. Mids are either a vinyl-coated leather or a plasticky polyurethane. You (ought to) get what you paid for, and for most collectors that means paying a little more. Bringing us, begrudgingly, to the H word. It’s not uncommon to find someone, somewhere, simply citing lack of Hype as the reason for the radioactive reception of the Mids. This writeup could have ended a long time ago should we accept this as an answer, but I refuse. Because the more time you spend in the Hype circle, the less the word means anything. It answers nothing seriously because Hype is not something provable in text and hardly proven in data. The J1 Patinas sold out on SNKRS instantly, does that make them hyped? No. Hype=celebrity x (public appearances / pop cultural reference) + (resell value x (number of pairs sold / number of rereleases). Or something like that. And I’m no Nike employee, nor am I a salaried numbers guy. I’m sure the numbers guy at Nike ran the computer simulations and found irrefutable proof for Hype as a quantifiable thing. If Mids only came out today, I’m sure the conversation would go something like this: Numbers guy: Boss, Boss! The simulations are back. If we release too many Air Jordan 1s, our Hype will face an objective crash. Phil Knight: Hype? Numbers guy: The kids are saying it, sir. Phil Knight: …and if Hype goes down, that’s bad? Numbers guy: I don’t mean to alarm you, but if Hype figures dip below flips through clipboard twenty-one-point-twelve percent, we could be seeing Jordans in outlet stores. Phil Knight: Okay? Numbers guy: I mean outlet stores we don’t own! Phil Knight: clutches chest, braces chair Numbers guy: Worry not, Boss. The R&D guys have come up with a solution. Phil Knight: Release less Jordans? Numbers guy: We release more Jordans! They’ll look almost the exact same, but not enough that our most fiendish customers won’t notice! Phil Knight: This accomplishes what, exactly? Numbers guy: Lemme put it like this: imagine we release more Air Jordans… but we don’t! Phil Knight: Numbers guy, this is why I pay you more than the factory workers. Phil Knight: Not my Chilly Tee! But I digress. Mid? au contraire. Melody Ehsani is a fashion designer and creative director at Foot Locker. She’s also married to Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, just found that out. Anywho, she designed her own Air Jordan back in 2019 as a part of the Jordan brand’s Fearless Pack. Done for the shoe’s 35th anniversary, Nike tapped a who’s who of contemporary artists to take a crack at the classic 1, from the likes of Ghetto Gastro, Hiromichi Ochiai of Facetasm, Edison Chen, Blue The Great, and the aforementioned Melody Ehsani. Her work on these is honestly stunning. Separate colorways for either foot, an analog watch brace buckle, all sitting on a translucent, almost crystalline outsole. The writing around the heel reads “if you knew what you had was rare, you would never waste it” (sneakerheads love instagrammable quotes). It’s a lovely edition to the Air Jordan 1 lineage. Yes, and you call them Jordan 1s despite the fact that they are obviously Mids. Stockx has the Melody Ehsani Mids up for $900 minimum, as of writing. A veritable king’s ransom, for a model we’ve spent a couple thousand words calling lesser and unappealing. But how? It’s a Mid. We don’t like Mids, I thought. They’re a consolation prize, they’re the eight lace holed stepchild, not even fit for His Airness. Melody’s no amateur, she would know the difference and would have the authority to say no to a Mid, surely. What, are you all Mids too?! Here we witness the most obvious of epiphanies: if NBA gameplay can’t sell Mids, just… let somebody else. Lows see similar, though less severe, derision, and that didn’t stop the Travis Scott Lows from going beaucoup. Yes, not everything from the Fearless Pack is doing four figures, but they are all doing better than your average Mid. Bringing us to one more piece of Mid derision I neglected to bring up in the previous section. There is, undoubtedly, a stigma to the Mid that prevents choice collectors and heads of the sneaker persuasion from daring to lace up. It’s that Mids are widely perceived as a Women’s shoe. Couple reasons for this: Jordans are typically released in Men’s sizes. There are models that drop in exclusively Women’s sizes, but this is far from the norm, and when they do… there’s a bit of gendered Happy Meal logic to the colorways, if you catch my cold. Contrast this with the more prevalent release of the Mids, thus a greater quantity of smaller sizes, the fact that a shorter shoe may frame some body types better than others because, remember, the Jordan 1 High was created for a very tall man, and we start to see why someone, divorced from hype or other magic spells, may just prefer the look of a Mid in some totally uncomplicated way. Acknowledging that every model from the Fearless Pack was a Mid, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Melody, of all designers, was put to work on a Mid. To this end, you will find women in streetwear circles reclaiming the Mid as something more legitimate than it’s used to being. And broadly speaking, where Mids fail with regards to the Sneakeriest of Heads, they succeed with entirely different communities. Oh, and speaking of communities where sizes skew smaller as opposed to American standards, you wanna know where Mids have always done big business? Japan. So much so that Japan, as early as the Mid itself, would receive SKUs the rest of the world never got, like the 2001 “Japan Pack.” Oh, no, is it elitism again? My first pair of Air Jordans were Mids. One of the triple black colorways they’ve been doing for years. Everyone remembers their first. Mine were purchased back in high school with several weeks of part-time Jimmy Johns paychecks. Still have ‘em, too. And I have that in common with a lot of people. The uncomfortable fact many the sneakerhead may need to face is that most people are immediately disqualified from all of this. Putting aside the exclusivity and wait times and rolling many a dice, there exist markets where what is thought to be unappealing may be reclaimed as something totally viable, and if not, simply people who can never justify what’s demanded of any sort of “dream shoe,” even if it really is theirs. When I was rocking those mids and cutting your Country Club in half, even if it were naivety speaking, I wasn’t wearing “a consolation prize” or “a woman’s shoe” or “something that isn’t hype.” I was, however, wearing Air Jordans, and I think any court of law would side with me in saying so. It’s easy to forget, in any hobby, that we will all approach participation from different places. Maybe your D&D miniature is a LEGO guy, and the rulebook and character sheets are all printed off the internet, and the d6 is pilfered from the Yahtzee box. To this end, the Jordan 1 Mid isn’t inferior to the Highs for any totally objective reason (apart from material but that’s not the consumers fault). If anything, they may be better. Do not walk away from here still thinking Mids are an unrespectable Jordan. I've done a lot of kidding around, but I do not hate any Mid on the principle of being a Mid. That's not fair to the people who it appeals to, and not fair should sneaker collecting, or any hobby in larger terms, be something available to everyone. In September 2021, Michael Jordan was photographed while out in public (shocker). Eyes inevitably fall to what shoes he elected to wear, wherein Mids got their long-deserved rub. Here, on the feet of MJ, His Airness himself, were the heat-reflective Mids. In fact, in fact, Jordan preferred playing in them as opposed to the high ankle on the OGs. Wanna know how I know? In 2020, a game-worn, sample pair of Air Jordan 1s went up for auction via Sotheby’s. This is about as old as Jordans can get, stitched to MJs exact preferences. Dior Air Jordan 1 High Top Sneakers - Review TLDR: Decent enough for a cheap rep - super comfy and look pretty cool. But if you're intent on convincing someone you own the genuine pair, you've got bigger issues than these reps. So I've seen these Jordan 1 Retro High Dior's all over DHGate and I know a lot of you have too. I paid £53 including delivery and they took 23 days to arrive. On the spectrum of nike reps, these are on the cheaper end so I wasn't expecting much. Right lets be real for a minute, the genuine pieces sell for over $10,000 so you gotta ask yourself wtf you're doing wanting to fool people with some knock offs. I mean - are you looking for a pair to fool some sneakerhead or so that you can tell your friends they're genuine? If so - they're not going to respect you, they're going to think you're a f-ing idiot for spending $10k on shoes and walking around in them. Do you want to fool the stockx authenticator so you can fraud some unsuspecting buyer? If so, you're pond life and I don't care about your opinions. Or are you looking to buy a decent pair of Jordan's, like the style of these, and just want cheap reps that are good enough not to appear as obvious fakes. I fall in to the final category and that's who I'm writing this review for. Packaging What packaging? They arrived without a box but at least they weren't all squashed. Overview Right so there's a lot to talk about here - so lets talk about the positives first.... At first glance they look great.. They're Jordans. You can't go wrong. The swoosh is very good in terms of shape/size. The pattern is different to the original though and noticeable when comparing side by side. Here's an album of images of them. You can see for yourself that the size/shape of the details is all on point. The soles are great but some minor discoloration/dirt visible on one of them in a small area. The quality of materials is good - much better than expected. But the layers are definitely thinner than the real thing. These stupid little metal things are accurate too. I mean, they're going in the bin but if they're your thing then whatever. And the toebox! The blessed toe box! There's always someone on this sub ready to shit all over the toe box. I've read the word toe box so often on this sub that it's completely lost all meaning. Personally, I don't think theres a problem with it. Faults In terms of negatives... The stitching isn't exactly high quality and the edging is noticeably poor.. I've owned genuine high tops that look like this but I imagine the real $10k pairs are a little tidier. The shape is great but the the high top around the tongue on the left shoe is a little warped. Maybe through shipping but probably not helped by cheap construction. You can see they kind of fold outwards a bit in this photo. The Dior Air logo is slightly different to the original which appears more pronounced depending on the angle you view it from. There's a couple minor errors in stitching/shape... Firstly the leather flap that holds the bottom 3 most laces has a straight horizontal stitch across it, whilst the original is slightly curved. Also the flap with the Air Dior logo on it that holds the top 2 laces also has a straight stitch down it in the wrong position compared to the original. Fit They feel great. Super comfy. I've been wearing them around the house for the last hour and my cats think I'm really cool. My dog is less impressed. Since August 2007 at least 21 detached human feet have been found on the coasts of the Salish Sea in British Columbia, Canada as well as Washington, United States. The feet include several matched pairs that were found at different times. The first case dates back to 1887. The Severed Feet Mystery: On the 20th of August 2007, a girl visiting Jedediah Island from Washington picked up a size 12 Adidas running shoe. She opened the sock and to her shock, there was a man's right foot still inside. It was concluded that the foot became dis-articulated due to submerged decay. The Adidas shoe was produced in 2003 and mainly distributed in India. The remains were identified as those of a missing man who had suffered from depression. The feet include several matched pairs. The most recent discovery was on the 1st of January 2019. An unnamed person on Jetty Island in Everett, Washington called the authorities and reported that they had found a boot with a human foot inside. The coroner was able to match the foot to Antonio Neill, who was missing since the 12th Of December 2016. Before the more recent rush of feet being found in the area, there have been earlier reports of similar cases dating back more than a century. In 1887 a leg was found in a boot on a Vancouver beach, leading to the place of the discovery being called Leg-in-boot square. The Vancouver Sun reported on the 30th of July 1914, that recent arrivals from Kimsquit found a human leg in a high boot on a beach near the Salmon River, now known as the Dean River. According to Simon Fraser University entomologist Gail Anderson, extremities such as the hands, feet, and head often detach as a body decomposes in water but rarely floats. Decomposition might cause the feet to come detached from the body because the ankle is relatively weak. While buoyancy caused by air either inside or trapped within the shoe could allow it to float away. However, finding only the feet of a person and not the rest of their bodies have been deemed as unusual. Finding two feet has been guessed at " million to one odds" and has thus been referred to as "An anomaly" by one of the police officers. Some of the severed feet found have been identified. Here follows a list of the 20 most recent feet found dating from 2007 to 2019. On the 26th of August 2007, a man's right foot was discovered by a couple on Gabriola Island The foot was disarticulated due to decay. It was waterlogged and appeared to have been taken ashore by an animal. It probably floated ashore from the south. The shoe, a size 12 white Reebok, was produced in 2004 and sold worldwide but primarily in North America, and the type has since been discontinued. On the 8th of February 2008, A right foot in a size 11 Nike was found on Valdes Island. The remains were identified as a 21-year-old Surrey man reported missing four years prior, whose death is considered "not suspicious", indicating either misadventure or suicide. This type of shoe was sold in Canada and the United States between February 1, 2003, and June 30, 2003. It has been confirmed that the right foot found on February 8 on Valdes Island and the left foot found on June 16 on Westham Island belonged to the same man. On the 22nd of May 2008, A woman's right foot was found on Kirkland Island inside of a blue-and-white New Balance sneaker. The fourth foot was discovered on an island in the Fraser Delta between Richmond and Delta, British Columbia. It was also wearing a sock and sneaker. It is thought to have washed down the Fraser River, having nothing to do with the ones found in the Gulf Islands. The shoe was a New Balance sneaker manufactured in 1999. In 2011, the fourth sneaker found in Kirkland Island was identified as being part of a pair of blue and white New Balance sneakers belonging to a woman who jumped from the Pattullo Bridge in New Westminster in April 2004. On the 16th of June 2008, a man's left foot was found by two hikers on June 16, floating in water in Delta, Westham Island. It has been confirmed that the left foot found on June 16 on Westham Island and the right foot found on February 8 on Valdes Island belonged to the same man. On the 1st of August 2008, a right foot inside a man's black size 11 shoe was discovered by a camper on a beach near Pysht, Washington. It was covered in seaweed. The site of the discovery was less than 16 km from the international border in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Testing confirmed that the foot was human. Police say the large black-top, size 11 athletic shoe for a right foot contains bones and flesh. This was the first foot of the series to be found outside of British Columbia. The RCMP and Clallam County Sheriff's Department agreed on August 5 that the foot could have been carried south from Canadian waters. On the 11th of November 2008, a known woman's left foot was in a shoe that was found floating in the Fraser River in Richmond. The shoe was described as a small New Balance running shoe, possibly a woman's shoe. A forensic DNA profiling analysis indicated that it was a genetic match to the foot discovered on May 22 on Kirkland Island. On the 27th of October 2009, a right foot was found in a size 8½ Nike running shoe on a beach in Richmond. The remains were identified as a Vancouver-area man who was reported missing in January 2008. On the 27th of August 2010 a woman's or child's right foot, without a shoe or sock was found on Whidbey Island, Washington. This foot was determined to have been in the water for two months. Detective Ed Wallace of the Island County Sheriff's Office released a statement saying the foot would be tested for DNA. However, there was no match found in the national DNA database. On the 5th of December 2010, a foot was found on the tidal flats of Tacoma, Washington about 40 km south of Seattle and 225 km south of Vancouver. "The right foot was still inside a boy's size 6 'Ozark Trail' hiking boot, and likely belonged to a juvenile or small adult," police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. On the 30th of August 2011, a foot was found in a man's white and blue size 9 runner, floating next to the Plaza of Nations Marina in False Creek, attached to the lower leg bones. It had disarticulated naturally at the knee due to the water. The sex of the victim is unknown. On the 4th of November 2011, a man's right foot inside a size 12 hiking boot was discovered by a group of campers in a pool of fresh water at Sasamat Lake near Port Moody. In January 2012, this foot was identified by the British Columbia Coroner's Service as that of Stefan Zahorujko, a local fisherman who went missing in 1987. Police believe the foot separated naturally from the body and do not suspect foul play. On the 10th of December 2011, a Human leg bone and foot were found in a black plastic bag under the Ship Canal Bridge, Lake Union, Seattle. The medical examiner has not found a cause of death or identified the body. On January 26, 2012, the remains of "what appears to be human bones inside a boot" were found in the sand along the water line at the dog park near the Maritime Museum at the foot of Arbutus Street, in Vancouver. On the 6th of May 2014, a Human foot was found in a white New Balance shoe along the shoreline of Centennial Park near the Pier 86 grain terminal. The New Balance model 622 athletic shoe was white with blue trim, size men's 10½. This model of shoe was first available for sale in April 2008. In September of 2018, a Foot was found within a light grey Nike Free RN shoe on the shore near the 30th Street beach access point in West Vancouver. The size 9 and a half shoe was manufactured between 1 February and 17 April 2017. It was believed to have been worn by a male and had a blue sock. The victim is believed to have been under the age of 50. The latest recorded case was on the 1st of January 2019 a Foot was found in a boot, later tied via DNA to Antonio Neill, missing since December 12, 2016. In December 2017 the British Columbia Coroners Service said that foul play had been ruled out in all their investigations by the authorities. According to the Canadian authorities, all the feet found came from people who were either killed in accidents or committed suicide and that the feet detached during the normal decomposition process. Most of the feet were found in sneakers and the coroner concluded that the sneakers were responsible for both keeping the feet buoyant enough to wash ashore and for protecting the feet against decomposition and scavengers. Sea scavengers are known as lazy feeders and they prefer to eat the softer parts of our bodies first for example the soft tissue and ligaments around our ankles. This would cause the feet to become detached from the victim's bodies. The other reason we have seen an increase of feet appear since 2007 is because the newer footwear designs are more buoyant. Despite the official cause being released there are still those that believe it might be the work of a serial killer or something more supernatural. A Comprehensive Summary of Australian Men's Online Clothing Retailers Hi everyone, Almost 7 years ago, I made a spreadsheet of almost all the mens online stores in Australia, based off a list from /fa/, which currently lives in the sidebar of aMFA. I've now updated it, as well as added additional information (shipping fees, number of brands/products stocked, location etc.) to be a more useful resource, and also removed the shitty 4chan slang. Beyond the Basic Bastard: Workwear and Americana Beyond the Basic Bastard: Workwear and Americana This is the first thread in a series of threads about building your wardrobe in a specific direction after you have become content with The Basic Bastard Wardrobe. For the first iteration, we’re going to be going over one of /r/malefashionadvice’s original loves: workwear. MFA and workwear have had a long and storied relationship, but in recent years it has taken a backseat to things like SLP. Despite that, workwear is still a somewhat popular look that is easily accessible and easy to start wearing when you are coming from the Basic Bastard. This thread is not meant to be a comprehensive informational guide on the roots of the Americana & Workwear aesthetic. While that is an interesting topic, and is something I am interested in researching further, this is mainly meant to be an introductory wardrobe expansion guide for those that are new to fashion. Characteristics I should start by specifying that there is arguably a difference between Americana and workwear. Americana is a style inspired by heritage American clothing, while workwear is a style of clothing that draws from clothing worn by manual laborers. So while a greaser look might not perfectly fit into the aesthetic of workwear, and a french work jacket is not technically Americana, the aesthetics share so many similarities that making two separate guides would be difficult and unnecessary. From here on out, I will be calling the combination of the two aesthetics “workwear,” even though it would be more technically correct to include both each time. Traditionally, workwear has tough materials and roomier cuts. It is commonly associated with fabrics like denim, flannel, and canvas. Common footwear choices include leather boots and shoes. Common features of garments include tough materials, multiple pockets, and utilitarian roots. These garments were originally created for or chosen because of a combination of durability, utility, and price. A long time has passed since then, though, and fashion brands have drawn inspiration from and appropriated these looks for decades. Aside from manual laborers, plenty of garments have been taken from various militaries and incorporated into everyday fashion. Examples include M43 jackets and breton shirts, among many many others. Ideally, the modern versions of these clothes are made in their country of origin or another first-world country, and their durability should be on par with the originals. Buying Common Items Jeans: The most common and ubiquitous of any article of clothing under the workwear umbrella. You know what they are. Made of denim and usually blue, these pants eventually break-in and fit the wearer’s body like a glove. They can be worn with any casual outfit and you don’t have to feel bad about wearing them in the yard or spilling sauce on them. You probably already have these, but if you find yourself wanting another pair, consider trying a more roomy cut like the Levi’s 501 or Unbranded 601. Buy from: Levi’s, The Unbranded Brand, Sage Denim Also see: Building the Basic Bastard: Jeans White T-Shirt: A workwear classic, this workhorse wardrobe staple can be worn on its own or layered. For added authenticity, try a heavyweight t-shirt. Just like jeans, a denim jacket is a workhorse jacket than can be worn with anything except for jeans of a similar color. Buy from: Levi’s, Uniqlo, Tellason, Taylor Stitch Also see: Your favorite ___ for $___: Denim Jackets Chore Coat: The term “chore coat” is more of a blanket term for work jackets that otherwise don’t really have a name. Often characterized by having many pockets, both inside and out. A great outer layer that can be layered very easily. Buy from: Apolis, Pointer, Carhartt and Carhartt WIP, J. Crew, Etsy Flannel Shirt: Can be worn as an inner layer in winter and an outer layer in spring and fall. These shirts are versatile and useful to have, on top of just being plain comfortable. Popular patterns include buffalo plaid and blackwatch. Buy from: L.L. Bean, Portuguese Flannel, Woolrich Also see: Your Favorite ___ for $___: Flannels Denim and Chambray Shirt: Try throwing one of these on instead of the usual OCBD. These add a bit of texture to the outfit and can be worn either as an overshirt or a base layer. Buy from: Spier & Mackay, Levi’s, J. Crew, Taylor Stitch Henley Shirt: Originally a rowing shirt, these are great for when you want to add something with a little more character than a t-shirt and a little less than a button-up. Buy from: Target, L.L. Bean, Pistol Lake, 3sixteen Boots: Boots are mostly worn in Fall, Winter, and early Spring when the weather is cold. They are usually brown, and they look good with pretty much anything (are you seeing the pattern here?). They can take a beating and will last a long time as if you take care of them. When in doubt, throw these on with a pair of jeans. Wolverine and Red Wing seconds can be found in the $200 range somewhat often. Keep an eye out on Sierra Trading Post and /r/frugalmalefashion for those sales. Other Items These items aren’t as overtly Americana/Workwear, but are still popular and versatile items to have in one’s wardrobe that either have roots in or fit in with the style. Leather Jacket: A classic choice for a stylish-yet-rugged jacket, leather jackets can be worn for a greaser look, or can be worn in a more sleek style. Plenty of fast-fashion stores have fake leather jackets, but those will fall apart quickly and/or age very poorly. For something that will last longer and look good doing it, leather jackets are an investment. Pea Coat: Originally a naval coat, these are great pieces of outerwear that are cozy and versatile. They aren’t the best choice for warmer climates, though. Buy from: Banana Republic, J. Crew, Target Military Jacket: Though there is not just one military jacket, I am using it as a general term to cover different types of jackets, like an M43 or M65 (note the standing collar compared to the M43). Pocket and collar layout and design may vary, but generally these are olive or brown jackets with plenty of pockets. Some stores may also call them field jackets. Buy from: Uniqlo, Banana Republic Fatigue Shirt and CPO Shirt: Inspired by vintage military shirts, these shirts most easily worn over a t-shirt or button-up when it’s a bit too cool for just one layer. Buy from: Stan Ray, Schott, Military surplus stores Work Pants and Fatigue Pants: Try wearing these instead of the usual chinos. Often these pants have a distinct style of pockets. Though work pants and fatigue pants are different types of pants, I have lumped them into one section because I felt that they are not all that different. These types of pants may also have more pockets, and usually will be straight-cut rather than slim. Buy from: Carhartt and Carhartt WIP, Stan Ray, Dickies Breton Stripe Shirt: A shirt with a bit of character and a nautical heritage and vibe. Put one of these on with anything. They’re comfortable and more fun than an average t-shirt. Buy from: Muji, Armor Lux, Saint James Cable Knit/Aran Sweater: Aran sweaters were originally worn by fisherman from the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. These are more eye-catching than a normal crew-neck sweater, and are ideally nice and thick. Buy from: Inverallan, Aran Crafts, Howlin Cap-Toe Sneakers: I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention these sneakers. An American classic, these sneakers can easily find their way into any outfit. Buy from: Converse, PF Flyers Moccasins: An alternative to boots that can be worn comfortably during the Spring and Summer, moccasins are a great choice for casual leather shoes, and can be worn more easily in a workwear wardrobe than something like sleek chukka boots or derbies. Buy from: L.L. Bean, Rancourt, Quoddy Brands Disclaimer: Some of the brands in this section, especially the ones featured in the one-dollar-sign budget tier, will likely sell many other things besides clothing that fits the workwear aesthetic. $ First, check places like thrift stores, military surplus stores, etsy, and eBay. Items like jeans, flannels, fatigue shirts, and work jackets can all be found for cheap. Carhartt: A classic workwear brand, Carhartt makes jackets, pants, sweatshirts, and more. Their cuts are a bit boxy, so if you find yourself wanting something that has a more modern and slim fit and you have money to spare, check out their WIP line, which is mentioned in the next budget tier. Dickies: Rugged work pants in a variety of fits at a great price. What’s not to love? They also make work jackets and shirts, but their pants are what they do best. J. Crew: J. Crew sells a large variety of clothes, some of them fitting the workwear wardrobe more than others. Most notably, the outerwear section has many items that fit the aesthetic, from pea coats to military parkas. Check back during Fall and Winter months for the best selection. J. Crew’s clothing is a bit overpriced at retail, so make sure to buy on sale at 30% off or more, which they run often. Levi’s: You know them for their jeans, but Levi’s also has plenty of other pants, shirts, and jackets (including denim jackets, of course) to complete a basic workwear wardrobe. L.L. Bean: A heritage American brand with a previously too-lenient return policy, L.L. bean makes solidly constructed clothing and accessories for traversing the great outdoors at very reasonable prices. Ralph Lauren: Though many MFA members (myself included) prefer other brands, it would be wrong of me to leave Ralph Lauren out of a heritage workwear brands list. RL of course makes polos, and also has a wide range of other shirts, pants, jackets, and more. $$ Bleu De Paname: A brand that makes great work jackets and pants, Bleu De Paname takes inspiration from French workwear. Carhartt WIP: The fashion-oriented brother of Carhartt, the WIP line is based in Europe, and makes classic workwear and Carhartt garments in more modern cuts. Jackets are less boxy, pants are a bit more tapered, etc. Gustin: Gustin is a brand with a crowd-sourced business model. The quality is great for the price paid, but be aware that you will have to wait for multiple months to actually receive your product. Gustin makes every core item in a wardrobe, from jeans and button-up shirts to leather jackets and white sneakers. Stan Ray: A brand that originally gained notoriety in the fashion world for their fatigue pants, Stan Ray has branched out to make more types of pants, jackets, shorts, and hats. Taylor Stitch: Taylor Stitch makes clothing that would be good for any Basic Bastard, and they have a solid selection of shirts and pants for a workwear wardrobe, including chambray, denim, and flannel shirts, as well as plenty of overshirts and a couple types of work pants. $$$ 3sixteen: Known for their great denim, 3sixteen also makes other staple pieces like shirts and jackets. Folk: A English brand that makes clothing that is workwear-inspired rather than strictly workwear. Great small details and more minimal than most of the other brands listed. Rogue Territory: Like the other brands on this list, Rogue Territory makes anything a wardrobe could need besides footwear. Their Supply Jackets are their most well-known item. Universal Works: A UK-based brand that makes contemporary workwear. They have plenty of great pieces for any Basic Bastard and Basic Bastard graduates alike. Has a decent amount of colours and also has Waterless Protection. Shoe Guide v2.0 I really enjoyed working on the new Spring/Summer guide a couple weeks ago, and it's a slow morning at work so I thought I'd take a crack at updating the Shoe guide as well. I like the FAQ format of the current guide, but there's a lot it leaves out. I've organized this into four sections - (I) sneakers, (II) casual/in-between shoes, (III) dress shoes, and (IV) storage & care. I won't address boots, since they have their own guide. I tried to keep budget in mind, but if you're just starting to upgrade your footwear, I realize the cost can be eye-opening. Well-crafted, high-quality shoes can last for years though, and no one is suggesting that you drop $1200 this weekend. Invest in your shoe wardrobe slowly, focusing on craftsmanship, durability, and versatility. A couple days ago, someone asked about a cheaper version of this pair of blue suede blucher mocs from Oak Street Bootmakers. I think my reply is relevant here too - I'm a firm believer in getting what you really want, even if it means saving and waiting. You're not going to be able to wear navy blucher mocs until Spring anyway, so that gives you 3-4 months to save for them. Let's say you could afford $100 right now - I'm sure you can find a way to squirrel away an extra $40/month until May. When spring hits, are you going to regret not having these shoes or are you going to regret not having had that extra $10/week? As always, suggestions for additions and revisions are welcome! I. Sneakers In general, you should look for sneakers that are classic and simple. There's always a risk of looking juvenile in sneakers, but you can minimize it by wearing the right ones. I recommend avoiding sneakers with more than two colors and anything that was made to play a specific sport (unless that sport was tennis in the 1950s). If you're in high school, you've got a lot more leeway here. Canvas sneakers/plimsolls - Very simple footwear that's more appropriate for spring/summer than fall/winter (although that depends on where you live, of course). Solid colors like white, navy, tan and gray are the most versatile. Vans, Chuck Taylors, Jack Purcells and Keds are the easiest to find, but less common brands like SeaVees, Spring Court, Superga, PF Flyers, Tretorn and Feiyue are worth hunting down if you want something more unique. Low-top athletic shoes - This is a tough category, because it's easy to go wrong. If you stick to classic shoes in simple colors and avoid over-detailing and technical features, you're on the right track. J.Crew carries some New Balance and Adidas options, but you also can't go wrong with simple Nikes, New Balance 574s, Onitsuka Tigers, or Sambas. At the high end, Common Projects and MMM GATs are fantastic, but if you know what those are, you don't need this guide. High-tops - Out of all the sneaker categories, these are the most likely to look juvenile, so I'd say avoid unless you're already sure they fit your style. Nike Blazers and Supra mid-tops in solid colors are the most versatile choices (high-top Chucks too, but that's really a different style than most people associate with high-tops.) I'm also a fan of the mid-top hikers that New Balance has been doing the last couple years (J.Crew pairs here, classic gray). There's an entire sneakerhead culture built around Dunks, Raf and RO, and this intro guide isn't meant for any of that. Check out Kicksonfire, slamxhype, hypebeast, or the SF Official Baller Sneaker Thread for more on that style. Avoid - Actual running shoes and Vibram Five-fingers toe-shoes - unless actually running! To preempt a backlash, no one is telling you not to wear athletic shoes for sports, but wearing shoes like this with jeans or chinos is a style disaster. Be wary of fashion sneakers from places like Diesel and Lacoste too - they're often flashy and way overpriced for the quality. There are so many good, simple shoes that there's no reason to pay for the fashion company markup. I'm sure someone will point out some reasonable ones, but they're the exception. Unless you're at the beach (or CA/FL), avoid sandals. Additionally - and I realize this is probably a controversial opinion - I'd avoid black sneakers completely, unless you already know that they fit your style. Black isn't a versatile color, despite what most people think - it doesn't match dark indigo denim, for example, which is what you'd probably be wearing with sneakers most often. Additionally, in menswear, black is associated with evening and formal events, which makes it a poor match for sneakers. II. Casual/In-between Shoes Lots of guys focus on sneakers for casual shoes, but in almost every case, they'd be better off moving up into this category. These are shoes that are still casual (almost all of them would look great with jeans, rolled-up chinos and shorts) but look more mature than sneakers. Again, opt for classic styles with a history - it's harder to go wrong with something that's been around, virtually unchanged, for 75-100 years. These'll generally cost more than sneakers, but not as much as well-made dress shoes. In many cases, they're resoleable (like dress shoes), which extends their life dramatically. Loafers - Not dress shoes - they're for loafing. Bass makes affordable loafers (and has a long history with this type of shoe), Rancourt and Oak Street make mid-range models, and shell cordovan Alden Leisure Handsewns are the holy grail. Types include full-strap, pinch-penny, beefroll, tassel and venetian loafers. I love beefroll loafers, but that's a personal preference. Bucks - in white nubuck or tan suede, with a red brick sole. Classic spring/summer footwear, perfectly appropriate with jeans, go-to-hell chinos or shorts (sockless). To wear white bucks the most traditional way, you've got to go all-in preppy or pick up a seersucker suit. To use an oxymoron, white bucks are the most traditional go-to-hell shoes. Tan bucks are a little easier to wear, imo - they look great with jeans, for example. There are brighter-colored options, but not until you have other footwear basics covered. Desert boots/chukkas - Clarks Desert Boots (CDBs) get mocked as the MFA-hivemind item, but the fact of the matter is that they're a pretty good in-between option. Beeswax leather and taupe or sand suede are the most versatile choices. Lots of other companies make chukka boots too - from low-quality $40 pairs at Kohls to $700 shell cordovan Aldens. Blucher mocs/canoe mocs/camp mocs - A more grown-up alternative to boat shoes. These generally have a charcoal or red sole, 1-4 eyelets, and no collar lacing. GQ tells you why they're classics. LL Bean makes affordable pairs, Quoddy and Yuketen make higher-end pairs (in Maine). I've beat the hell out of this pair of Quoddy Canoe Mocs in chromexcel for three straight summers and they just keep looking better and better. IMO, that's the advantage of paying for quality up front. I'm biased, because these are my favorite casual shoes. Here are some other photos - Blue chromexcel Oak Streets on Simplethreads, LL Bean, LL Bean Signature, Sebago Campsides, Oak Streets in navy suede with red brick sole. Boat shoes - Like desert boots, these probably don't need an introduction. Wear Sperry Top-sider A/Os in Sahara without socks and you'll look seven guys out of ten in the summer (for good or ill). If you want to go higher-end, Sperry has done some designer collaborations (Band of Outsiders, recently) and shoemakers like Alden, Allen Edmonds, Quoddy and Russell Moccasin all make boat shoes. Avoid - Sneaker/dress shoe hybrids like the ones from Sketchers, Rockport and Clarks. You know what I'm referring to. They're overdetailed, overcomplicated and overpriced, and they're invariably worn by guys who think they're stealthily getting away with wearing sneakers when dress shoes are required. There are so many better options for in-between shoes that there is literally no excuse to buy these. The Basic Wardrobe 3.0 THE BASIC WARDROBE by Renalan PREFACE With over 50,000 subscribers, it was high time for another update. Now with reduced vulgarity and expanded options and ideas for the introductory wardrobe. This guide applies to all ages, body types, social standings, or self-perceived personal archetypes. This guide lists the basics and fundamentals of the mens wardrobe and will point to some budget-minded options for this. Read this guide understanding that a lot of noobs can't afford $150 shirts. Remember though, generally, you get what you pay for. Fit is king, nothing can make cheap clothes look better like a good fit, and conversely, nothing can make expensive clothes look cheap like a bad fit. Tagged clothing size varies widely by manufacturer, a small isn't always a small and a large might be a medium. Check out the guide to 'How Clothes Should Fit' for more info. SECTION I – PANTS Jeans - The blue jean is a classic part of American workwear and a staple to any man’s wardrobe you can imagine. Anyone can wear these. Stick with a dark indigo wash. Avoid bootcut jeans, nobody has calves that flare out larger than their thighs. Levi’s 511 – Clean Dark - $39.99 – Slim fitting, tapered leg for the skinnier guy. Levi’s 508 – Rigid Envy - $39.99 – Very similar to the 511, but with more room through the thigh, but still retaining the taper past the knee. Recommended for athletic guys. Levi’s 501 – Clean Rigid - $42.99 – The 'original' denim cut, the cut has grown larger throughout the years. The original 501 fit closer to what the 511 is today. These are more suited for guys with bigger legs. Chinos - Colloquially known as 'khakis', khaki is the color and chino was the material originally used. Levi's makes trousers in most of their jean cuts in varying colors. As a beginner, avoid cargo pockets and pleats. Flat front pants are much more flattering. Dockers Alpha Khaki - $39.99 – These fit slim, close to the 511, black is less versatile than you think, consider navy or the earth tones. Dockers D1 Slim Fit - $39.99 - These fit like 514s, a bit tight in the seat and straight past the knee. Black is less versatile than you think, consider navy or the earth tones. Cords - AKA Corduroy pants. Lots of people wear these as kids. Again, the fit rules that apply to jeans also apply here. Make sure the wales (the thin strips) are small. Levi's makes a lot of these in their jean cuts for similar prices. Shorts - Avoid cargo pockets. Slim, plain front shorts work well during the summer and hotter months. Check out J. Crew Factory and Land's End Canvas for some budget options. SECTION II – THE SHIRT Someone said that a shirt’s collar frames the face, which is important because people look at your face. For this reason I prefer V-necks over crew necks. Graphic tees you ask? Wear them at your own risk, they generally give off an air of immaturity. Mossimo V-Neck Tees - $7.99 – Multiple colors – you can find these at target, they’re slim fitting and v-necked. Similar Tees from LEC: Crew and V There are however other shirts available too, collared button down shirts. Learn to like collared shirts, they can really make your image more mature. LEC Polos - $9.99 – Multiple colors, another basic, less versatile than collared button downs. Button Ups – Stick with long sleeved versions for now. Keep em’ close to the body, off the rack shirts will typically need tailoring. Thicker and heavier weaves are more casual (oxford and twill) and lighter weaves more formal (poplin and broadcloth). There are exceptions to these rules, but this is just a guideline. Make sure your undershirt doesn't show. Lands End Canvas - $20-30 – They have sales on all the time, the shirts aren’t the slimmest, but safe. Alfani Red “Dress Shirts” - $20-$30 - “Sport Shirts” - $20-$30 – These are decent slim shirts on a budget, dress shirts are usually longer and have to be tucked in. Prices vary between $20-$30 and a lot of sales go on. Bar III “Dress Shirts” - $30-60 – More from Macy's, higher quality than Alfani. H&M - $15-30 - H&M doesn't do e-commerce, but they are a very prevalent mall store and carry many different types of button downs. They typically range from $15-30, they are generally slim fitting. J. Crew Factory Button-Ups - $15-40 - J. Crew's outlet store, 30% off sales are relatively frequent. Quality is supposed to be below J. Crew's mainline. Fits are typically a bit boxy, consider sizing down. SECTION III – THE LAYERS “Winter is coming.” So what do you wear? I like sweaters and cardigans, maybe a hoodie here or there. Check out the Fall or Winter Wardrobe guides if you want more info. Merona V-Neck - $22.99 – Collars frame the face, same thing from t-shirts applies to sweaters. LEC Sweaters, Cardigans - $20-35 - Cardigans are very versatile for layering. They definitely give off a more mature vibe than other sweaters. American Apparel Cardigans - $20-30 – Simple and basic, what is said above applies. American Apparel Hoodies - $20-30 – Some people say hoodies are immature, but a slim fitting solid hoodie doesn’t really look that bad. These are for you college kids and youngsters. J. Crew Factory Knits - $25-50 - Again, sales are frequent. Check here for cardigans, v-neck and crew neck sweaters. SECTION IV – THE SHOES Before I learned how to dress myself, I had a pair of ratty ass athletic Nikes, some flip flops and some bulky ass dress shoes. What you want to look for is a slim, rounded toebox that accentuates the shape of the feet. Avoid clunky soles, bulky toeboxes, square/pointed toes and pointless/gaudy stitching. Shoes are often the most expensive part of an outfit, so I’m only going over some cheap basics. Canvas Sneakers - Converse Chuck Taylor All Star - $45 - Vans Authentic - $45 – These are basic low-top canvas sneakers, they usually look good with jeans and other casual outfits. I recommend Optical White for Chucks and True White for Vans. Desert Boots - Clarks - $60-80 – I have developed a loathing for these boots now, but they actually do look decent and I’ll recommend them again. Beeswax is a good color. They go well with jeans and chinos. Brown Boots -LL Bean Katahdin Engineer Boots - $159 - A solid, made in USA no-frills boots. It doesn't have the sleekest toebox, but it is supposed to be built rugged. Can stand up to some weather by adding snoseal, but the soles aren't lugged. Would go great matched with jeans. They go great with jeans or chinos. Go for a shade of brown to get the most mileage out of your shoes. SECTION V – ACCESSORIES Accessories, the little details, sometimes these make an outfit, but leave that to the pros. Two basic accessories that can work for any man are a belt and a watch. The Timex Weekender - $40 – Ah, the NATO-strapped Timex. The hardest circlejerk that MFA has ever experienced, but for good reason. It’s a good looking watch, with a lot of options for being you in the strap. Just please don’t post a picture of it when you get one. Black faces are more casual than white watch faces. 4 STR / 4 STA Leather Belt - $35 – I got a decent leather belt from this store on ebay. The wider the belt the more casual, brown is generally more versatile than black, if you wear leather shoes, try to match the color with your belt. CLOSING THOUGHTS Here are a few brick and mortar/mall stores which you can easily find some reasonably priced basics in person. H&M - Cheap, fast fashion, clothing is touted to last only one season. Gap - I feel like the design of Gap clothing isn't as nice as some other retailers, but the quality is decent and sales are frequent. Zara - Cheap, fast fashion, higher quality than H&M. J. Crew Factiory - J. Crew’s factory line. Uniqlo - Only available in New York, much more availability outside of the US. The Basic Wardrobe 2.0 PREFACE I’ve been seeing a metric fuckton of posts about dressing college students, high school seniors, and whatnot. The current sidebar guide to the basic wardrobe might be slightly dated and it doesn’t really cover where to get these so called basics, so here it is an updated guide. This guide applies to all ages, body types, social standings, or self-perceived personal archetypes. This guide just lists the absolute BASICS and will point to some budget-minded options for this. Yes, I know about other articles of clothing like chinos and cords, but this guide is for the noobs. Read this guide understanding that a lot of noobs can't afford $150 Gitman shirts, or $300 for sick Ervell knits. Remember though, generally, you get what you pay for. Before you say this guide isn’t for me I’m in middle school, high school, college, graduate school, fucking read the guide. Side note: Fit is fucking king, nothing can make cheap clothes look better like a good fit, and conversely, nothing can make expensive clothes look like shit like a bad fit. Tagged clothing size varies widely by manufacturer, a small isn't always a small and a large might be a medium. SECTION I – THE BLUE JEAN The mother fucking blue jean, the most basic piece of workwear and staple to any man’s wardrobe you can imagine. Anyone can fucking wear these. Levi’s 511 – Clean Dark - $39.99 – Slim fitting, tapered leg for the skinnier guy. Levi’s 514 – Tumbled Rigid -$ 37.99 – Slimmer than you’re used to, if you’re actually skinny, go for the 511s. Levi’s 501 – Clean Rigid - $42.99 – A cornerstone of fucking Americana, the original ass cut, which has been recut as shit. The original 501 fit closer to what the 511 is today. Wear these if you’re a bigger dude. SECTION II – THE SHIRT Someone said that a shirt’s collar frames the face, which is kinda fucking important cause people look at your face. For this reason I prefer V-necks, plain ass fucking V-necks, maybe some solid colors here and there. Graphic tees you ask? Wear them at your own risk, you’re probably half as cool as you think and when you wear a graphic tee you look a third as cool as half you think. Mossimo V-Neck Tees - $7.99 – Multiple colors – you can find these at target, they’re slim fitting and v-necked. There are however other shirts available too, collared button down shirts. But you say, “Collared shirts are too mature for me, I’m too young for that.” I say, “Bullshit asshole, nobody likes the tuna here, unless you’re still swimming in your mom’s womb, you’re old enough to wear collared button downs. Mossimo Polos - $9.99 – Multiple colors, another basic, less versatile than collared button downs. Many types are availables, these ones from target are easy. Button Ups – Stick with long sleeved versions for now, wait till you grow some balls before you make the transition. Keep em’ slim fitting and close to the body, off the rack shirts will typically need tailoring. Generally speaking, thicker and heavier weaves are more casual (oxford and twill) and lighter weaves more formal (poplin and broadcloth). There are exceptions to these rules, but this is just a guideline Lands End Canvas – They have sales on all the time, the shirts aren’t the slimmest, but safe. Alfani Red “Dress Shirts” - $20-$30 - “Sport Shirts” - $20-$30 – These are decent slim shirts on a budget, dress shirts are usually longer and have to be tucked in. Prices vary between $20-$30 and a lot of sales go on. SECTION II – THE LAYERS Like Ned Stark loves to say, “Winter is coming.” So what the fuck do you wear? I like sweaters and cardigans, maybe a hoodie here or there. We’ll save the pea coats, blazers and trenches for the heavy hitters. Merona V-Neck - $22.99 – Here I am again, all up on your shit about collars framing the face, same shit applies for sweaters. V-necks are pretty sweet, crew necks are pretty awesome too. LEC Sweaters, Cardigans - $20-35 - Cardigans are versatile as fuck for layering. They definitely give off a more mature vibe, but think of the people who wear em’ James Bond, Mr. Rogers, Jimmy Carter, manly as fuck. American Apparel Cardigans - $22 – Simple and basic, what is said above applies. American Apparel Hoodies - $30 – These are raw as fuck. Some people may say hoodies are immature, but I don’t think a slim fitting solid hoodie really look that bad. These are for you college kids and youngsters. SECTION IV – THE SHOES Ah shoes, fucking shoes. Before I learned how to dress myself, I had a pair of ratty ass athletic nikes, some flip flops and some bulky ass dress shoes. Shoes are great, however shoes are kinda fucking expensive, so I’m only going over some cheap basics. Canvas Sneakers - Converse Chuck Taylor All Star - $45 - Vans Authentic - $45 – These are basic ass low-top canvas sneakers, they usually look good with jeans and other casual outfits. White is usually the safest color, I recommend Optical White for Chucks and True White for Vans. Boat Shoes - Sperry Authentic Originals - $75 – Boat shoes, some people say they’re kind of a southern fratty thing, but they’re a classic and they can fit in wherever you can wear canvas sneakes. Classic Brown is a great color, $75 at Zappos. Desert Fucking Boots - Clarks $60-80 – These are fucking parroted left and right here and I’ll recommend them again. The Beeswax are inoffensive looking chukka boots at a reasonable price. They go well with jeans and chinos.
