My older Vizio TV doesn't have a menu, how do I change my audio output to optical?
So my parents have a relatively old TV, an E-65 E-0 model. It has no menu, at all, like the remote that came with it has no menu button and and rven using a new remote with a menu button doesn't bring one up. It has vizio smartcast but it apparently can't connect without wifi, which I obviously can't do without a menu. I've tried to update the firmware with a thumb drive, in hopes that the update will enable a menu, but the update process itself didn't seem to work. That is all to say that I genuinely don't think this thing has a menu or ever will, so, with that in mind, how do I change my output to optical for a soundbar? There's an optical port and when I plug it in the cable lights up, but it doesn't seem to direct the audio through the soundbar. They wouldn't add a fully functional optical cable with no capacity to switch to it, right? If so, what am I doing wrong? For reference, my remote looks like the attatched image. submitted by /u/TheDwarvenGuy to r/VIZIO_Official [link] [comments]

Dolby Atmos passthrough signal "blinking" every few minutes on Ugoos AM6B+. Every other audio format works fine. Only happens with Atmos movies. Do I need a fiber optic HDMI cable?
I'm currently using shielded 48Gbps HDMI cables. They are 6ft (eARC, TV to soundbar) and 10ft (Ugoos to TV) long. Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar, LG C3 OLED TV. Every few minutes, when I'm watching a Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos movie, the sound will go out for a split second and then the Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos connection notification will re-appear on my TV. It's losing connection and then quickly reconnecting. Should I buy a $75 fiber optic HDMI cable to try and fix this or is it a waste of time? edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention, running CoreELEC + Avdvplus release 8. https://github.com/avdvplus/Builds/releases submitted by /u/No_Clock2390 to r/CoreELEC [link] [comments]

LG OLED G5 optical audio dropouts with external stereo DAC, any solution?
Hello, I’m experiencing a persistent audio issue with the optical (SPDIF) output of my LG G5 when feeding an external stereo DAC/preamp (Okto Research dac8 stereo), and I’m trying to determine whether there is any real solution or workaround. Setup: TV: LG OLED 77 G5 Audio device: Okto Research dac8 stereo (DAC/preamp) Connection: TV optical (TOSLINK) → Okto Research preamp Sources: Nintendo Switch via HDMI LG internal apps (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, etc.) Problem: Audio drops out briefly every 10–20 seconds (interval not constant). The DAC loses lock momentarily, then resumes. Video is unaffected. What I’ve already tried: Digital output set to PCM (not bitstream) Dolby Atmos disabled All Dolby formats disabled DTV audio format forced to MPEG A/V sync bypass enabled LG Sound Sync disabled No eARC, no passthrough, no “auto” modes Different optical cable The issue persists regardless of settings and occurs with both HDMI sources (console) and internal TV apps. Observations: The Okto Research preamp is a low-jitter, strict-lock DAC (no large buffer, no user-adjustable tolerance). This suggests the TV’s optical output has clock instability / micro-discontinuities, causing periodic loss of SPDIF lock. AV receivers seem to mask this (large buffers), but a “pro/audiophile” DAC does not. Limitations: The TV cannot output audio over USB to an external DAC. Optical → USB adapters do not provide true asynchronous USB audio. Using the TV’s optical output seems fundamentally unreliable for this DAC. Question: Has anyone found: A reliable way to stabilize LG OLED optical output to an external DAC? A known fix (firmware, service menu, etc.)? Or is the only real solution to avoid the TV’s optical output entirely (external streamer, HDMI audio extractor, eARC extractor)? I’m interested in real-world experience, especially with LG OLEDs + external DACs. Thanks. submitted by /u/Dupont3 to r/LGOLED [link] [comments]

Planning a fiber-optic USB-4 setup for ASUS Sage TRX50 — need help picking cable, dock, and DP1.4/240 Hz support
Hey everyone, I’m planning a somewhat unusual setup and need advice before I pull the trigger: I’m running an ASUS Sage TRX50 workstation that generates a ton of heat — enough that it makes my room uncomfortable. My plan is to move the PC to my basement mechanical room and then run a fiber-optic USB-C/USB-4 connection up to my den/bedroom where my monitor lives. Here’s what I plan to use: • An ASUS USB-4 PCIe Gen4 Expansion Card (thinking of buying one on eBay — link here: https://ebay.us/m/FX4oFi) • A fiber-optic cable / USB-4 Active Optical Cable between basement and bedroom • A USB-4 docking station up in the bedroom My monitor is an MSI 491CQPX @ 240 Hz, and to hit 240 Hz I need DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC (Display Stream Compression). I watched this video that shows fiber USB-C docking can work in theory — but it doesn’t have the details I need: https://youtu.be/UHMAlBJWGmM?si=-JaLKI0LiEBNlCx7 So — I have three main questions: ⸻ 1️⃣ What fiber-optic cable do I need? I know USB-4 exists, but there are different types and specs. Questions: • Should I use a USB-C fiber/USB-4 Active Optical Cable? • What specs (bandwidth/length) should I target for a reliable link over ~30–50 ft? • Any recommended brands/models that actually work with USB-4? ⸻ 2️⃣ Which docking station should I buy? I need a USB-4 dock that will: • Work with the fiber/USB-4 setup • Provide DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC (or DP Alt Mode) outputs • Support peripherals (USB, Ethernet, audio, etc.) ⸻ 3️⃣ Will it support DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC so I can hit 240 Hz? My monitor (MSI 491CQPX @ 240 Hz) requires DP1.4 with DSC to reach 240 Hz. Does anyone have real-world confirmation that: • A USB-4 dock can pass DP1.4 + DSC over a USB-4 fiber link? • Any limitations or gotchas with docking stations and high-refresh displays? ⸻ Bonus: If someone has done a long USB-4 over fiber run for a high-Hz monitor, I’d love to know what cable + dock combo you used. ⸻ Thanks in advance — there’s a lot of contradictory info online, and I’d really appreciate actual experience or solid recommendations! submitted by /u/Shanddude to r/threadripper [link] [comments]

5.1 audio from cox wireless box using optical out from hmdi splitter
I switched from Cox cable box to Cox wireless box. The old cable box had an optical 5.1 audio out I could connect to my older 5.1 receiver that lacks an HMDI port, and worked fine. Since the new wireless box only has an HMDI output, I bought an HMDI splitter to have 5.1 optical output to input to the receiver. The splitter I bought has three EDID Audio Mode settings: Support 2.0CH, 5.1CH and Pass Audio Modes. No matter which splitter mode I try, Cox Contour audio settings claim I only have the capability to receive stereo audio. Is there any way to get optical 5.1 audio from the wireless cox box to my 5.1 receiver? submitted by /u/unknown_lurker1957 to r/CoxCommunications [link] [comments]

You guys act like Hughie is all decent...
But there he is in the pilot upselling expensive cables and other unnecessary shit by straight up lying. It's the first thing we learn about him. So, this is pretty much everything in one. Bluetooth speakers. It's in stereo, so you can put it all around your living room, have some fun with it. You said you have a standard cable box, right? - Uh-huh. - Okay, then I need to get you an audio transmitter, aptX Low Latency. It makes it so there's less audio lag, and it's got a standard optical in. And let's hook you up with thousand-meg HDMI. Let's go with this one. Uh, it costs a little bit more, but the carbon's way more conductive. submitted by /u/Illustrious-Many-782 to r/TheBoys [link] [comments]

ELI5 Why did audio jack never change through the years when all other cables for consumer electronics changed a lot?
Bought new expensive headphones and it came with same cable as most basic stuff from 20 years ago Meanwhile all other cables changes. Had vga and dvi and the 3 color a/v cables. Now it’s all hdmi. Old mice and keyboards cables had special variants too that I don’t know the name of until changing to usb and then going through 3 variants of usb. Charging went through similar stuff, with non standard every manufacturer different stuff until usb came along and then finally usb type c standardization. Soundbars had a phase with optical cables before hdmi arc. But for headphones, it’s been same cable for decades. Why? submitted by /u/AwkwardWillow5159 to r/explainlikeimfive [link] [comments]

Optical Cables Are Confusing
I am deeply confused as to why my audio setup is acting the way it is, and with no luck googling, I turn to you Reddit for help understanding this confusing bit of technology. Recently my receivers HDMI EARC port broke, and being on a budget right now, I ended up for the time being switching to plugging in an optical cable. I have a 5.1 setup and so I wanted to keep using it as best as I could before I needed to replace the whole receiver as it still worked, just not the EARC. At first I assumed that optical cables had 5.1 audio, but when popping in one of my Blu Rays it came out to 2.0 audio. I ended up looking up why, and it turns out that optical cables couldn’t do HD audio from what I read. Sure enough, I tried playing a DVD and it worked, full 5.1 surround set up. So I started looking at all of my discs, to run a test. I have a decent chunk of them, a wide mixture of Blu Rays, 4Ks and DVDs. And each disc seemed to wield a different result. I didn’t text any mono tracks or stereo tracks, as I’m purely looking at surround tracks. Here’s what I was able to gather -All DVD surround tracks worked normally. -Dolby True HD tracks worked half of the time. Sometimes they’d output to all speakers, and some outputting to stereo or even mono. -All Dolby HD Master Audio tracks output to stereo. -All Dolby Surround 2.0 tracks output to 5.1 -All Dolby Atmos and 7.1 tracks output to 5.1 None of this is making any sense. I can get why some HD tracks work and some don’t, because of compression but why does Dolby Surround add channels that the disc says it doesn’t have? Why does Dolby Atmos work and Dolby Digital HD 5.1 doesn’t? None of it is adding up and I can live with this for the time being, I am just baffled at the logic of what is and isn’t working. Reddit if you have any ideas for why this is happening, please let me know. I’d love to understand this. submitted by /u/Sufficient-Breath987 to r/hometheater [link] [comments]

Hey there, since here are so many cool projects, I wanted to share one of mine too. I had my old tv for a good while now and it moved several times with me. After I moved into my house, I placed it the same way it always was, but now it felt kinda small due to the largr rooms. I also got tired of the annoying cleaning-process because of these angled feet and also wanted to get rid of seeing this cable-mess. So I decided to build a TV-wall that should solve all my "problems" pic 1: before - after pic 2: my old "setup": Ikea Besta, black surface (always dusty), 42 inch TV, speakers don't fit besides the tv, so they had to stand partially behind the TV, playstations got dusty and had problems to cool down, because they were partially enclosed. pic 3 - 4: I bought a wider version of the Ikea Besta (could've build one my own, but I wanted something with smoke-glass and had trouble to find some affordable stuff). I cut out triangles in the bottoms and the shelves to create airflow later. Then I designed and 3d-printed some covers to hide the hollow sections. I also integrated some anti-dust-meshes into these covers, but for some reason I didn't take photos of them. pic 5 - 6: My idea was to integrate some noctua fansto both sides, which start to pull air through the cabinet when the temperature hits a certain point. So I cut some holes into the sides, mounted them and got some covers for a cleaner look. pic 7: For easier cable management i driled some holes into the inside walls and got some variable covers, which hide the hollow walls but are big enough to fit plugs through them. pic 8 - 10: I cut the socket-are out of the back-wall, screwed it to the wall, installed the tv-mount and gave it a first look... still cables, much emptyness and black surfaces. (my door-frame got painted white later and it doesn't look that rough anymore) pic 11 - 12: Bought a black MDF board, cut it to the correct size, created 3 (+1) sections and screwed some light-ash strips to it to create the optics of these wood-foam-panel-thingys. I also integrated a shelf to create a cleaner look and give the whole back-wall more rigidity. pic 13 - 16: I also made a light-ash countertop, installed everything on the wall and finished my cable-cover (pic 14). The cover is also black MDF with enough space to hide my cables. to prevent it from bending and breaking, I added some metal-strips to the top and bottom and glued magnets into previously drilled wholes. Those will snap to the magnets in the backwall to hold it in place. pic 17: For better audio-management I needed a specific audio-extractor for which I 3d printed a mount to hide it behind the TV. pic 18: Inside the cabinets are my electronics and above the PS5 you can see a heat-sensor (shiny metal thing), which controls the fans. This works absolutely perfect, whenever the temperature goes above 35°C it activates the fans, which cool the interior down to ~30°C. When the console gets turned off, it cools to 27°C and then it stops running. pic 19 - 20: finished look. I guess it turned out pretty nice. My home is still pretty empty and I am really bad in decorating, so I am sorry for this pity decoration. In the future, I will get some better speakers, but for now they work just fine. Also my subwoofer sits inside the middle cabinet and I am happy, not to have stuff standing on the floor anymore. Have a nice day, everyone submitted by /u/iBeryl to r/DIY [link] [comments]

The struggle was real
I remember with my first computer, an Apple IIc (that I still have), that to hook it up to the Brother Daisy wheel printer, the store had to build a cable for it to work. Man that printer was loud. My older brother who was in college at that time said professors would not accept papers printed in dot matrix and to get the Daisy wheel for a typed style. I did later get the Imagewriter printer so I could print images and banners of course. submitted by /u/boybrian to r/GenX [link] [comments]

Why are optical ports not more widely used on audio equipment?
Why are optical ports not more widely used on audio equipment? Optical ports are neat, they "do" digital sound and optical cables are nice and discrete. submitted by /u/baghdadcafe to r/audiophile [link] [comments]

Reminder: Today is the only day of the year that you can resynchronization your optical cables.
Optical desynchronization, more commonly known as complex duplex reflux, occurs when the demipolar polymer bonds of interplexing optical components begin quantum tunneling into sympathetic audio outputs by generation of virtual or "phantom" acoustic frequencing. Optical cables can be easily deplenarized through insinuation of new resonances generated by simply steeping the infarcted audio components in boiling water for six to eighteen hours (depending on altitude), this effectively affiliates electron transmission into a more reflective attenuation, reducing overt interstitial quaffling vis a vis the bass solubility or "deep zone" of your cable's Kurchiov range. If you choose to boil your optical cables, first clean your cooking utensils in food grade soft soap, set a kitchen timer, and make sure to use only the highest grade audiophile certified water. AwdioSlutns2U sells the finest purified audiophile grade water on the planet, enhanced with the vitamins, minerals, and active biotics your optical cables crave. (Now with fulvic acids!) For the low, low price of just $99.98/gallon you can bu- (You don't need to resynchronize your optical cables, I made that up.) submitted by /u/MaximumEffort433 to r/audiophile [link] [comments]

Monoprice… I love you. 15 feet of Optical Audio with a crush-proof, aluminum sheathing for $7.99. I’m not sure I could crush this cable with pliers.
