My PC gaming hobby is dead and I'm pissed about it.
I've been building my own PCs for over 25 years and while it's slowed to a snail's pace in more recent years with piecemeal upgrades (further encouraged by my choice to do watercooling because fun), it's always been satisfying to finish a build and have it essentially be my everything-machine for years on end. Especially because I tend to play games on the older side or with lower demands. My graphics card on this thing turns 10 years old this month and (again, due to the whole watercooling choice) I had been saving to upgrade it for like 2 years (they've been expensive for a while) - but now? I don't see that being possible in the foreseeable future, as so many parts have become astronomically expensive. So now, some newer games just...won't be accessible to me. It's cheaper for me to buy a new PS5 and a new copy of Clair Obscur than it is to upgrade one part. I have other hobbies, but I've never felt so angry by something blocking my ability to participate in any of them. I broke a leg that took me out of bike racing a few years ago, and that didn't make me *mad*, for example. But I'm fuckin' pissed about the prices of computer hardware. I'm livid about the idea that fuckass tech companies want to instead "lease hardware streaming" or whatever on their own machines instead of ones we build and own. submitted by /u/Sexweed42069 to r/Vent [link] [comments]

Getting jaded with pc gaming
I’ll try my best to make sure this post isn’t low effort, I genuinely want to have a discussion about this and this sub seems to be a lot more interested in talking about it. But I finally had that epiphany that makes me ready to just be done with pc gaming. The other day I decided to login to my pc (4090 and 5800x3d) on bazzite Linux with the latest nvidia drivers. I hadn’t played on it since re9 came out and I finished it and it was a great experience. Played at 4k pathtracing 90 fps. Amazing looking game. I got about half way through it again on insanity difficulty and stopped. When I went to play again Nvidia drivers have seemingly had a regression. Now anytime I try to play RE9 with pathtracing my game will freeze. Not a matter of if but when. Usually not long into starting the game. This has been reported in Nvidia forums and no fixes have been issued. Well no big deal I think. I guess I’ll start up one of my favorite games last of us part 2 on pc it looked amazing when I played it last except for more nvidia bugs that have to do with save files crashing the game. This has been an issue since last year but I assumed it would be solved by now. Well no, and new issues have been introduced more regressions and now anytime particle effects like dust show up they are extremely pixelated making it unplayable… I looked it up these issues have also been reported on and still no fixes yet. I finally had enough, I just booted up my ps5 and I’m halfway through the intro, no fuss, no regressions just pure gameplay… I already know some of the comments I will get as I’ve gotten them before and they are right to some extent: “Why are you using Linux, support isn’t there” “Linux can’t game, you’re fighting an uphill battle” The reason I initially switched to Linux half a year ago is because Nvidia issued a driver update on windows that would bug out the temp sensor readings on certain gpus causing high temps with no thermal throttling and updating caused a no display output bug. This then happened again 3 months later with another driver solidifying my decision. Not to mention these pt and upscaling issues for re9 have been reported on windows as well. I guess I’m posting here because I’ve mostly exhausted all my options. I struggled with windows for so long, Linux was a breath of fresh air, and Nvidia support for it is better than it’s ever been. Granted a lot of my games that I’ve tried still work flawlessly, cyberpunk2077 runs amazing on Linux now with full path tracing and no crashes. Silent hill f ran day one no issues. But the more and more that I just want to actually game, the more the pc seems to get in my way. I’m sure this post is one in a million and I’ve seen the sentiments before but I’ve never wholeheartedly agreed with them until right now. I just want to play the damn game and the ps5 is the easiest way to do that. submitted by /u/Chotch_Master to r/consoles [link] [comments]

Lost Interest in PC Gaming
During the work day, genuinely the thought that gets me through it is getting on my PC and playing all night. but when I hop on, I have zero motivation or just too tired to commit to any game. It’s more I like the idea of playing than actually doing it at this point. Hope this makes sense and if anyone else relates. submitted by /u/OkShirt1995 to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

The switch to PC gaming was...diabolical. 10/10 would recommend.
There was very little resistance. It took me a year to convince myself to part with my money for a PS5. I caved in 10 minutes for the GPU "on sale" 😶 submitted by /u/brutalbones to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

After losing my right arm I started designing a one-handed PC gaming controller so I could keep playing
sup guys 5 years ago I lost my right arm in an accident. the thing that hit me almost immediately was how difficult PC gaming became when every setup assumes keyboard in one hand and mouse in the other. i tried a lot of different workarounds but none of them really allowed full control, so I started experimenting and eventually built a prototype device called ERCHAM MK1 heavily inspired from devices like the Razer Tartarus keypad, the concept here was redesigned from the ground up specifically for true one handed control rather than just being a stationary keypad. the idea was simple: combine the keypad and the mouse into one device so a single hand can handle movement, aiming, and abilities at the same time. some of the design ideas: optical mouse sensor on the bottom so the device moves like a mouse programmable key layout similar to a gaming keypad stabilizing strap so the hand stays aligned with the controls ambidextrous layout so either hand can use it It started as a rough DIY project just so I could play again, but after tuning it for a while it actually works surprisingly well for things like FPS, MMOs, and games with lots of keybinds. Im curious what the PCMR thinks: If you had to play mouse + keyboard with one hand, what game would you try to optimize a setup for first? submitted by /u/Adventurous_Tie_9031 to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

Optimism posting: The next 2 years might be the "Golden Age" of modern PC gaming
Let’s face it: the hardware hike of PC gaming has been getting out of control. AAA developers are constantly pushing increasingly demanding graphics with diminishing returns, and PC gamers have been feeling pressured to keep up with the latest hardware every year. However, in the next few years, with PC components becoming unaffordable for most consumers and Nvidia pushing the release of the 60 series until 2027, this “pause” might just be what the gaming industry needs to cool down. It’s almost certain that the entire gaming world will be stuck in the current generation for the next two years, which is not a bad thing. Major developers will have more time to design and optimize their games for current-generation hardware. And in order to compete, AAA developers will have to shift their focus from “making the most graphically impressive game” to making games that are actually innovative and have good gameplay. The indie gaming scene will be affected very little, and amazing games will continue to come out despite hardware limits. After all, the real backbone of gaming is creativity, and creativity is never bottlenecked by graphics cards. I know a lot of you are worried about cloud gaming becoming the norm, but I don’t think it’s a real concern, at least not in the next two years. No matter how much the CEOs want to push cloud gaming, the infrastructure in the U.S. simply cannot keep up: The average American today can pay nearly $200 per month for internet service that is among the slowest in the world. Only 20% of American households had high-speed fiber in 2022. What are the billionaires gonna do? Invest in public infrastructure?? So, in conclusion, I think we are facing a new reality in PC gaming. This is a future neither consumers nor developers are familiar with or comfortable with, but it could be a positive change of pace for everyone. You might say that I’m just coping, and you would be right. It’s just that, with all the doom-posting lately around rising hardware prices, I think a little hope would be good for our mental health. submitted by /u/Cicada-Tang to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]

Built an offline 2008 Vista gaming PC
I wanted to put together an offline Vista rig similar to what I had as a kid, but better. All hardware (except the 2018 HDD) was released no later than 2008. Decided to only put XP and Vista-era games on there too, the wallpaper (which I actually used back then 😅) is also from 2008. Specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 4850 GPU, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, Gigabyte EP35-DS3R mobo, ASUS Triton 70 CPU cooler, Cooler Master Centurion 5 case, Altec Lansing VS2420 speakers, Dell E197FPf monitor, Microsoft Reclusa keyboard, Logitech MX518 mouse, Func Surface 1030 mousepad. submitted by /u/Gonarhxus to r/pcmasterrace [link] [comments]
