Planer or cheap planer jointer combo?
Im about to purchase a planer or a jointer planer machine, was debating which route to take. Im still a newbie when it comes to woodworking, only built a few pallet wood projects and currently building two walnut tables. I have a table saw and all the basic tools, next thing I wanted to purchase was either a good lunchbox style planer (Metabo DH 330 or a Dewalt DW 733), or a cheap planer/jointer combo like the Holzstar ADH 305/Scheppach HMS 1080. Budget isn’t really an issue, it’s mostly just space and weight. I don’t have a workshop I just work out of my balcony, so I can’t really fit big three phase industrial machines. The jointer planer combo machine does appear solid, but it’s the same copy paste chinese machine that many brands like Einhell, Scheppach, Titan (in the US) make. The reviews on these machines I have read extensively, and they are pretty crap apparently. Motors burning up, outfeed and infeed sections not flat, fence isn’t square… My issue with that is, that instead of getting a solid planer, I end up with a jointer/planer that does neither well. I am not a professional by any means, I don’t need mm perfect joints, but something that gets the job done and will last. I know I can make a jointer jig for a planer alone, but since I work with pallet wood thats twisted and bowed often, the convenience of just running two sides over to joint then to plane quickly seems pretty cool. Should I just risk it with the cheaper machine or go with a legit planer and just use it to both thickness and joint? submitted by /u/mightymato1 to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Since I’ll get a jointer eventually and a proper table saw. Most likely this year. Thinking of getting the Rikon 1HP wall mounted collector. Anything else I should consider? Planer recommendations
What planer would you recommend that I get as someone who is a hobbyist? I made a post earlier about a jointer/planer but the overwhelming response was just get a nice table saw and planer and forgo the jointer. I don’t want to overspend for no reason but the cost is not a huge factor. I have access to a sawmill so I’d love it if I could mill closer to a 20+ inch board… although most that I see looking through old posts are around 12” so if that’s the only reasonable option, that’s fine Is anything larger a reasonable option? For example the grizzly 20” (based upon a recommendation below) - would this be a good choice or is there a different direction? I’d like it to be mobile (base with casters - doesnt need to travel) submitted by /u/ThanksMuch4YourHelp to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Planer for a beginner...
I'd like to get a Thickness Planer to add to my tool set. I don't exactly need one right now. I'd just like one. I have a lot of ideas and a few plans. Just no time right now with some other home improvements taking priority and a 1 year old to help with watching plus work. I don't know if you can kind of do the same things as a planer by building a router sled for flattening which would be way cheaper... But way more difficult and time consuming. I have 3 in mind and can get them for the following prices brand new with various discounts I have access to. Craftsman CMEW320 $270 2 Blades 3 Year Warranty I liked the video review from 731woodworks but a lot of reviews mentioned issues with snipe so people typically fixing it by making projects slightly longer than needed. I have a lot of Craftsman corded and cordless that I like and was a weekend warrior they are great but the reviews regarding snipe have me hesitant. Hercules HE091 $280 3 Blades 90 Day Warranty Currently on sale for 30% off from $400 at Harbor Freight with the Parking Lot Sale. Good reviews but concerned about a 90 day review. Spending that much money for not even a 1 year warranty just feels hard to swallow, I know that's cheap for a planer though. Ridgid R4331 $404 3 Blades 3 Year Limited / Lifetime Service Agreement Kind of hard to justify spending this much on something I've never used before. submitted by /u/Aeyix to r/BeginnerWoodWorking [link] [comments]

Finally bought a planer and getting a load of boards ready.
I've been wanting a planer for a really long time so I finally got one. Now I'm just working on getting through my stash of boards for various projects. I had thrown out a lot of boards when I moved warehouses but have been restocking the supply. I ended with around 25 boards that are right near 5/8ths inch. And varying widths but mostly about 43 inch long. Granted I have a decent amount that needs to be cut off. I'll be drilling out the holes in the boards and sticking dowels in them to clean them up. After planing these I ended up with 7 x 5 gallon buckets of shavings. And now they are in the beds for a nice layer of mulch. I also used the jig in the photo to run the boards through the table saw and get the sides to 90 deg and straightened. Hoping to get a bunch of these glued up this coming weekend. I'll glue them up in 12 inch sections so the can run back through the planer to get them cleaned up. I just have to find where I put my doweling kit. Then I can start getting panels cut out of them. Can't wait to have time to get these going and then I can work on the night stand I've been drawing up. Tired of my extremely old and beat up night stand and it seems like a good project for these. Once I get the stock pile up a lot higher I'll get a few other pieces of furniture made. I have aback room in my shop that has AC so I'm storing the lumber in there for now as the main warehouse is always high humidity and I just pull the lumber out when I'm working it all up and getting things together. Later this year I plan on building a 25 foot shed that's 12 foot wide so that I can AC that and just do this kind of stuff in there and get a lot of my stuff out of the main warehouse. submitted by /u/FriJanmKrapo to r/BeginnerWoodWorking [link] [comments]

I screwed up and got this stuck in the planer. Any ideas on how to get it out?
So I got this stuck in the planer at work and I’d like to get it out before I have to tell my boss about it. One end is narrower than the other so it went in ok then got good and stuck. I tried to plane it down with the portable planer so it would go all the way through it I guess I didn’t take enough off and I think I made it worse. Help please! Thank you in advance! Also: I know this machine pretty well, I just did the yearly maintenance on it in the spring so if I have to take it apart I’m pretty confident I can do it if that’s the only option. Just hoping to avoid that if possible. submitted by /u/Mackey_Corp to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

How important is planer?
I have a hodge podge of power tools, hand tools...pretty much anything I want to make I can as long as it's not too complicated. But I don't have a planer. I can see how having one would have made some of my joins cleaner. How often do you use planers on your projects? Is it worth the investment? I'm so a smaller portable one (under $1k) instead of the more expensive ones. Any thoughts or recommendations? submitted by /u/No_Weird_4204 to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Do i need an expensive planer? Do i need a planer?
Howdy? Newbie home DIY guy with increasing tool collection coupled with decreasing time due to small children running about. Have done much work on new old house & learned a bit. Already have table saw, mitre saw, most significant hand power tools. QUESTION: I have been saving up for the Dewalt DW735x & now that i have the money i'm having deep troubles pulling the trigger. With a small family it is hard to justify the cost. If i buy i won't be able to get a jointer anytime soon. Would it not be better to buy one of the lesser models (porter cable, jet, wen) & have extra money for jointer? Big question: is the dewalt $230 more value for a newbie who might not even appreciate the difference between good & best? submitted by /u/fenario to r/BeginnerWoodWorking [link] [comments]
