I struggle to find good clothes because I am usually a XL or XXL in most brands but have a heavy top so a lot of stuff just don’t fit. If I am able to find 3 fits in one day, that is successful shopping day. I also like to buy stuff that will last a few years and will be in good condition when I eventually donate them. I usually buy from westside or lifestyle. Brands that work well for me in lifestyle are code, rarism, and some times vero moda. What brands and stores do you buy from? What about street shopping? Hey ladies, I used to be a huge Torrid girlie. Then the 2024 elections happened and I’ve been trying to find Canadian retailers. One issue I keep coming across is many plus size retailers in Canada charge an arm, a leg, 3 kidneys, your left eye, and the soul of our puppy’s firstborn for basics. So I have to ask: where is everyone buying fashion forward clothing that isn’t going to break the bank or give off soccer mom vibes (looking at you, Penningtons and Addition-Elle)? Forever 21 is gone. The Torrid near me is cutting their hours (and the quality has gone down hill). Target is getting rid of their plus size area. Dolls Kill and For Love and Lemons unceremoniously just stopped selling their extended sizes without saying a word. Department stores are dying. TJ Maxx’s quality is ass. Layne Bryant has always been ill-fitting and boring. Walmart is location dependent and the quality varies wildly. Old Navy is fiiiiiiiine, I guess (yawn). Anthropologie’s sizing is so inconsistent that I’ve given up ordering from them. Unique Vintage and ModCloth are so far removed from who they used to be that it makes me depressed even going to their websites. Arula fricking VANISHED. I do work for myself, so I can push the boundaries on what is business attire. That being said, we own a truck repair shop, this is what I wear pretty much daily. I dress to make myself happy, even if this is a place where jeans and a hoodie would be fine too. For reference, I am 45 y/o. 5'9". Size 4xl. I like to show that even women on the bigger side of fashion can dress well. That we don't have to just wear long shirts and no structured outfits. I know I have struggled to find people to follow that dress the way I like to dress at my size. I won't lie, it does take alot of work to hunt down things vs if you are a 2xl or smaller. This is my random beef, but here’s what pisses me off about plus-size fashion and award shows: Bridget Everett looks absolutely stunning, but she’s in a Selkie dress that you or I could buy off the rack. Her show Somebody Somewhere(such an incredible show btw) was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy, and Jeff Hiller even won for his role in the show- yet no designers could, or wanted to, dress her? It’s not about her beauty, she looks incredible- it’s about the lack of access to high fashion for people in bigger bodies. As the title says, if we are cutting out one end of the body spectrum from modeling for being unhealthy, we should also cut out the other end for the same reason. We have toned down the use of thin models, because it would be unhealthy for the majority of women to try to attain that body type, yet we praise companies as "woke" for using overweight plus sized models, even though being overweight comes with a multitude of health problems. I would like to clarify that I'm not talking about all plus sized models. Most seem to be within a healthy weight range. However there are some companies I've seen using overweight women as models, and I would argue that normalizing this unhealthy body type is just as irresponsible. Plus-sized modeling has become a mainstream source of women's fashion , but where are all the plus-sized men models? I was watching Hulu yesterday when an advertisement popped up showing a group of plus-sized women dancing for an Old Navy commercial. I was thinking about the commercial for a brief moment and it occurred to me, "How come I've never heard anything about plus-sized male models?" Surely they must exist. I proceeded to do a quick google search of "plus-sized models" on my phone. I found out that 98% of the photos on google image were of plus-sized female models. I went to TheBodyPositive.org and you can see from the main photo on their website that about 40 girls were in the photo and about 3 guys. I looked up some podcasts regarding body-positivity and the only ones talking about it were women. Maybe males don't agree with what standards we should define beauty by or it's possible that we simply ignore the notion that larger sizes can be attractive. In any case, I found my observation to be quite intriguing and I'm curious to hear other opinions about it. And for all the haters, I just want to say that I have nothing against promoting positive body image regardless of how skinny or fat you are. Edit 1 Thank you everyone for all of the input. It was nice to have a large-scale conversation that I could read through while fighting this nasty virus. After reading through the comments, it's clear that industry standards for plus-sized beauty do apply to both men and women, just in different ways. I did not know that Big and Tall shops existed for men and have existed for quite a long time. I also forgot to take the Dad-Bod phenomenon into account. On the other hand, I saw a lot of comments that argued the idea that men do not care about their bodies or appearance as much as women do. Personally, I think many men care about their weight. Men don't express such insecurities properly because of traditional male gender roles which can limit and stigmatize the extent of our emotions. Therefore, it is a blind assumption to think that men aren't impacted by many beauty standards set by the industry as well.
