Hi does anyone recommend any plant that could thrive in the above conditions? My apartment entry has a little verandah with dodgy roof guttering above, water pools and drips pretty often, leaving frequent water and mossiness to develop on the ground. There's nowhere for me to connect a gurney to clean it easily. Owners corp know but only fix things if they might get sued about it, I think fixing the roof is too expensive for them to consider. I've been catching the water run off with potted plants, but some hate it and die, just because the water is gross I suppose . Anyone know a resilient mould chomping potted plant that might work? zone 9b. I have these black krim seedlings that sprouted 3-4 weeks ago. They currently sit next to a bright window inside and I take them outside for an hour a day. I’ve read that the next step is to put these in 4 inch solo cups but I’m wondering if I can skip that step at all? I have tried organic potting mix, indoor or outdoor or indoor/outdoor potting mixes, every soil brand I’ve seen at big box stores and local nurseries. Liquid plant food, miracle grow, eggshells. I have tried terracotta pots, basic plastic, eco plastic, recycled materials, glass, and of all shapes and sizes. I have tried every room, window, and sunlight level across 2 homes. I have tried indoors, outdoors, and a combination of those. I’ve tried moving the plants around hourly, daily, weekly. I’ve tried leaving them in one spot. I google every plant and follow their unique watering instructions. I follow their unique pruning advices. I follow their unique lighting needs. All I want is a pretty container garden and some cute, full window box flowers. I have not struggled with planting in raised beds. In fact, I planted in my raised beds and then abandoned them 2 years ago and everything is thriving there today. Roses, peonies, asparagus, columbines, lavender, lambs ear, chives… is it me? I have several large, heavy terracotta pots that are sitting unused because I don't want to have to bring them inside during a freeze in order to protect whatever is planted in them. Can anyone suggest plants (in addition to certain sedums) that are happy to be grown in containers and are cold-hardy enough to come back each spring, even with the burden of being in a pot and not in the ground? I have various options for sun exposure (full sun, morning sun, shade, etc.), and I'm willing to cover the pots with row cloth during freezes. I just can't move them indoors. Thanks in advance. Hi all!! As the weather is getting nicer, I’m excited to put some balcony plants, but I’m noticing any plant store walkable or metro to me only has indoor plants, and I don’t really trust Safeway to have high-quality stuff. I’d love to get a hanging basket or any sort of outdoor plants or bulbs that I can put in some pots that I have. There's a cat in my neighborhood, clearly someone's outdoor cat, not feral, has a collar, that started visiting my porch about six months ago. She'd just sit there for a while, watch me through the window, then leave. I started putting out a bowl of fresh water for her since it gets hot here in summer. She'd drink it, sit for a bit, then go on her way. This became a daily routine. Over the months she got more comfortable with me. She'd let me sit outside near her. Eventually she started rubbing against my legs when I'd come out. This morning I heard unusual sounds on my porch. I looked out and there she was with three tiny kittens. She sat down, the kittens explored the porch, and she just looked at me. Like she was introducing them. I sat very still and watched. The kittens investigated everything: the water bowl, the doormat, a plant pot. She kept them close but let them explore. After about 15 minutes, she gathered them up and they all left together. I feel like I just experienced something really special. Like she trusted me enough to bring her babies to my porch. My next door neighbors moved in about a year ago. We both have front yards, theirs being a bit bigger than mine. Both yards are fenced and when weather permits, I work on my porch and my dogs laze around (ie sleep and play but not being disruptive to the peace). That s something we ve been doing ever since we came here 4 years ago. Now my neighbors got a cat about 6 months ago and decided that this cat would be left to come and go. Their cat has made it a habit to get into the pots in my yard. I ve spent a great deal of time making that yard mine and my dog s so the pots contain plants that are dog safe (even comestible actually). My dogs will usually stare at the cat and get near it (no chasing, they ve been trained not to do that) and the cat will automatically retreat to their own yard. If it s in my yard when we come out, it will run away as well. I ve never chased the cat, nor do I let my dogs out to chase it or do anything to it. Earlier today, when I came back fron our morning walk, i found a note in from my neigbors demanding I keep my dogs inside because their cat doesn t like them and likes to be in my yard. I went to see them and told them in no uncertain terms that I would not comply to their demands and that my dogs are in their own yardand are not attaccking nor chasing their cat. Their response? I m taking my dogs on walks / for training 2 times a day minimum, they know I take them for hikes during the weekend so they don t need to be out otherwise. Their cat is mostly outdoors and it s cruel of me to deprive it from going in my yard especially sonce it likes lying down in some of my plants... I told them to start taking care of their yard and add the plants their cat likes. In return I got a door slammed in my face with a threat to call animal control on me next time their cat runs from my yard to their... Now I m trying to figure out my next move while wondering where in hell does the entitlement potion they seem to be drinking comes from and who produces it .... ------ update ------ First of all, Thank you everyone for your comments, advice and sharing some of your encounters with the entiltled kind. After getting through all the comments, I ve decided to go with quite a few of your suggestions 1 - I ve changed the angle of one of my cameras but also have ordered an additionnal one that will be positioned to track all of the front yard 2 - I ll be upping my lavender, rosemary and geranium game as well as keep on researching other plants. Also, as suggesting by many, I ll sprinlke / throw catmint seed on their lawn when they re not looking and get my other neighbors in on that as well. 3 - today I m definitely getting oranges and using peels as repellent. I m definitely grabbing pinecones too on our next hike to add to the arsenal. I ve started researching safe use of essential oils as well. I ve also started with the fork suggestion. 4 - I ve re-checked the local bylaws. There may not be any leash laws for cats, but it s actually stated that cats are to be contained on their owner s property. So I ll give a call to animal control to start a documentation trail and ask them if they could issue a warning to the neighbors along with a "kind" reminder of the law. I also want to adress a question / comment that has been made a few times : " How come your dogs don t go after the cats but one of them will hunt birds and you re having trouble stopping that?" My dogs have been around my friend s cats since they were puppies and were righfully taught that cats are not prey or toys. It s ok to be around the cats, cuddle or play but not with the mouth. Not easy to teach but feasible. As for the second part, anyone who s had or has Huskies / Alaskans or a stubborn dog in general knows that some battles are longer to win especially when prey drive is involved. It took 6 years of evolving and expanding to get to it is today, but it was worth it so my cats have a wonderful safe outdoor space and we have also have a beautiful calming place to sit with them. A catio should be for you too if you can! The rest of the garden is never sat in! 😂 The real plants are in the pots, the rest are artificial. There’s cat nip, cat mint, grass and an olive tree. Of course there’s nothing that is dangerous in there, nothing to get caught up in. It’s all super safe. The lights are all solar and there’s a polycarbonate roof on the rear half, I will be extending it soon. My outdoor cat killed a magpie a few weeks ago, we found it in the garden, my idiotic cat thought it would be a great idea to do this with the magpie’s entire flock watching him. They are now out for heavy revenge. The other day he was outside doing what he usually does (using our plant pots as his very own garden of Eden bathroom) then all of a sudden we heard the vicious clicking of magpies, when we looked outside there were 6 magpies sitting on our fence and swooping down at him. Clearly pissed that he killed their mate. (Which totally fair) my cat thinks he’s a big man so was trying to swipe at them on their decent from the fence but missed them everytime, he then came running to the door and slid inside looking at us like he had been picked on 3 times today all cause of his trousers. My cats a bit of a dick so we get why they’re going for him but is there any way to make them stop? I mean fair game since he killed your pal but the shiny eyed birds are waking us up at 5 am on the dot pecking at windows looking for him. When he goes outside and again he’s being swooped on. He’s taken to hiding under cars up and down our street but they are still trying to get at him. We have an outdoor garden, which my mother loves, but doesn't always have the time to care for properly. So it falls on me to do so. Now a big thing to note is a common reason potted plants can die is, surprisingly, overwatering. This is why I inspect the soil daily, and skimp on watering for the day if it's clear that the soil is still moist, and needs a bit of drying. Enter my elder sister, who I suspect is mostly doing this for a power trip, though I won't discount simple ignorance completely. I won't get into all my grievances with her, but in summary, I've been told by my parents to do as she says, purely because she's older than me, and therefore always in the right. I've explained my reasons to her as to why I don't water everyday. So of course, she took it upon herself to water on my "off-days", despite clear evidence of the plants beginning to die of root rot. At some point she straight up told me, right when I'm about to have breakfast, to drop it, and water the plants immediately, and every single day. despite me watering them just yesterday. Sister: "It's your duty, not mine. Water them every single day. They are not getting enough water, which is why they're dying." Me: "The soil is still quite damp, and a rich brown. They actually need drying a bit." Sister: "Don't assume anything. That's just the surface." Parents: "Do as she says. We'll keep your food warm." At that very moment, I've stopped caring. I've since begun to do exactly that every day. Rain or shine, the soil will get their fill, even as the plants begin to wilt and wither from overwatering, begging to be dried out for a bit. At some point, they asked a professional for a second opinion, and had already suggested overwatering as the cause of the sudden malady inflicted on the garden. They either did not believe him, or didn't catch that detail, but they did swap out the soil of the potted plants. Many people enthusiastically bring home a pretty houseplant for the first time, and proceed to water it every day to keep it happy. While understandable, you're setting yourself for heartbreak and frustration. It is natural to assume that the one thing we know we have to do to plants should be done often, and the more often the better, but root rot is usually not fixable and will slowly kill your lovely plant. Underwatering, on the other hand, can be fixed very easily. As a rule of a thumb, once a week is perfect for most plants. Missing the outdoors and ending up with about 60 houseplants through a year of lockdown, I have learned that majority of them prefer to be left to their own devices. Here is a rather conclusive guide working for vast majority of widely available plants: give them a sunny spot. Seems obvious, but we might be tempted to place them for aesthetics out of sun. There are plants that don't mind (ferns are the best example), but most do. Give them sun or grow light. Remember that more sun makes them dry up more often (so on a sunny window sill, water once every 5 days, in a shadowy corner, once every week) once every 2 weeks, take a soft cloth, slightly wet, and clean the leaves. Dust sets on them as well, and it makes it harder for them to undertake photosynthesis properly. It is also a rather soothing activity. Everyone wins. get a plant food. They are usually cheap and you can also make your own, and they can make your plant grow like crazy. Don't overfertilise tho - about once every 3 months enough. Too much fertiliser is a thing, and it can burn them. Don't fertilise in the winter. ⚠️ on the topic of eating, many houseplants are toxic to pets if ingested. If you have pets, particularly playful ones, make sure to research ahead to avoid trouble! Don't rush to repot. I know you want to put them in these cute pots you got, but keep them in nursery pots for at least a month. Many plants experience environmental change shock between you taking them from the store and bringing them home, so don't make it harder for them, they will thank you with many happy years in those sweet pots of yours. speaking of pots, always have drainage. Try not to put plants straight into a decorative pot without drainage - get a bigger planter and put it in with nursery pot and tray. chop of leaves that go yellow - they won't go green again, and the plant is wasting resources on it. if cactuses or succulents, you still have to water them, albeit rarely. Many people recommend cactuses as the most beginner houseplants, but you can absolutely kill both cactuses and succulents, and not only as a beginner (I'll be the first one to admit I've killed a few). But even if they do not die on you, they will not look as lush as when bought in few months unless quite a lot of care is given. If you really want an unkillable plant, get a pothos or peace lily. They both droop when thirsty (so they give you a clear indication as to when to water them), have a lovely chunky foliage, are quite cheap and very sturdy. Another great ones are snake plants. Most cactuses and succulents would go on 4th and 5th place on the "hardest to kill" list. your plant may experience a bit of a shock after about half a year since you bought it, as the fertiliser given in store usually runs out around that time. Don't panic, it is not dying, just give it a little love and plant food and it will be happy again. Follow these and you should be just fine for the majority of plants. Houseplanrs are awesome decorations that can light up any place, and more than you think are extremely low maintenance. It is a nice hobby for the soul, and don't stress if you kill one, happens to everyone every now and then. Some species are drama queens, and some specimen of no-fuss plants are ungrateful bastards. That being said, most will comply, because they want to be alive just as much as you want them alive. Here is a little guide on what to expect from common low maintenance species.
