Neighbor harassment... Is there anything I can do? (A 3 Year Saga)
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/kshucker OOP has given their permission to reposts this saga Neighbor harassment... Is there anything I can do? Originally posted to r/legaladvice & r/homeowners Editors Note: Prior to these posts, OOP made a post titled Potential neighbor harassment. What can be done? on Nov 29, 2016 (3 months earlier) which is unrecoverable, but is mentioned in the following post Original Post Feb 21, 2017 So, about 2 months ago, I posted here on r/legaladvice, that I moved into my first home and was warned by a friend who used to be a police officer, that my new neighbor would call the police for (what he said) everything you could imagine in the past. Dogs barking, loud cars, loud kids at the playground across the street, people walking on the sidewalk in front of her house, etc etc. My first post here was asking if there was anything I could do legally to keep her at bay from calling the police. This was about a week before I moved into the home and pretty much every response to me was laughing at me and telling me that if I wasn't a bad neighbor she wouldn't need to call the police. I took it with a grain of salt. Fast forward to moving day, and we pull up to the house in the Uhaul. About 30 minutes later, a police officer pulls up in his cruiser and checks in on us because they received a call from "somebody in the neighborhood". I asked what the call was about and he said he couldn't tell me, but we just told him we bought the house and had some friendly small talk and he was on his way. I'm convinced that it was our neighbor who made the call to the police. All we were doing was moving in! A week later it snows and I'm outside shoveling and so is my neighbor. I get to talking to her and within 30 seconds she starts bragging (more or less) about how she will call the cops on everybody and everything. I couldn't believe it. Google searched her name and an article popped up about a harassment charge she acquired 3 years ago. She got into a verbal altercation with a neighbor and she hit them with a spade shovel. She seems like a real upstanding citizen. Fast forward to present time. Last night it was unusually warm. I decided to get a fire going in our fire pit in the backyard. Before I could even get it lit, she's knocking on the fence and asks if she can talk to me. She says "I don't know what you guys are planning on doing over there, but there aren't too many people having fires with 10-15 mph gusts. If any of that smoke makes its way into my house, I'm going to have to make a call" I tell her that we were still going to have a fire and we'd be inside in about an hour. So, my question is, if she keeps threatening to "make calls" or have police show up at my door when I'm doing nothing illegal, is there anything I can do in terms of harassment or getting a restraining order? TLDR Neighbor calls the cops for just about everything, infringing on my privacy when I'm trying to enjoy myself. Nothing illegal is going on. Can I do anything about it in terms of harassment or getting a restraining order? UPDATE: Hello fellow Redditors, I'm the guy with the neighbor who won't stop calling the cops. Feb 24, 2017 (3 days later) I'll try and keep this short. I took all of the comments I read about what to do into consideration. Most suggested investing in a security camera system. As much as I don't want to do this, I'm going to have to. Today (2/24/2017), while I am at work, my S/O had to run to the store for something before work. S/O has to drive past our house to get to work from the store. S/O said that while passing our house our crazy neighbor lady is in OUR front yard with a leaf blower, blowing leaves around our yard, knowing that nobody was home in our house. Clearly on our property, no questions asked. I am fucking irate. Security cameras are being bought TODAY and being installed as soon as possible. At what point is trespassing, actually trespassing? I do not want her on my property but she was clearly on my property. A part of me wants to say she was doing what she was doing to get our dog worked up inside of our house. I'm desperately looking for some help here. edit: messaged the mods so this isn't locked anymore. edit 2: don't worry everybody. I'll update this story if anything else comes about after cameras are up and she's asked to not be on my property again. Update 2 - rareddit Apr 11, 2017 (6 weeks later) TLDR AT THE BOTTOM AS WELL And for the lazy who won't click the links, I'll give a quick overview of whats happening: Bought my first home in December, neighbor likes to call the cops for everything you can imagine, neighbor infringes on our privacy whenever we are outside and threatens to call the cops on us for no reason. Now bear with me here, I don't have exact dates to go off of since I am at work and on my lunch break. I will guesstimate the best as possible with dates. So we left my first update where me and my S/O caught our crazy neighbor lady in our front yard blowing leaves around. Nobody was home at the time and my S/O drove by the house and saw it. That's how we know. A lot of people suggested getting a security camera system and I said I would be getting one as soon as possible. Other financial issues came up and I had to put off the camera system for a few weeks. This is where the 2nd update starts. Fast forward from February to March 15th(?). It is around 9:45pm and I am out back smoking a cigarette. I see movement out of the corner of my eye and look over towards it and see this.... hand... throwing pieces of garbage into my yard over the fence. It's Crazy Neighbor Lady. She didn't know I was outside (just good timing on my part I guess). I played dumb and asked, "What are you doing Crazy Neighbor Lady" and she quick stops throwing the trash and quickly turns around to go inside of her house. As she gets closer to her door she turns around and says, "I'm sorry, what did you say?" With which I responded loudly, "What are you doing Crazy Neighbor Lady?" She says she was just outside checking out her yard... Now mind you, it's 9:45pm and it had just started to snow. We were projected to get 12+ inches of snow so I think her plan was to throw trash into my yard and then have it be covered up by the snow. I went over to where I saw her hand coming over the fence and found a random piece of plastic and a soda lid (think of the ones that you get from fast food places with your drink. The kind you poke a straw through). They were laying neatly on top of the leaves and mulch bed that they were thrown on. This had me LIVID. I caught her in the act and bought a security camera system that night on Amazon. It came within two days and I set it up over that weekend. I set all of the cameras up inside of windows looking out towards my property. It took only THREE DAYS of having the cameras to find her throwing more little pieces of trash onto our property. It's just little pieces of trash that end up in her yard. We live in a city along one of the busiest streets. It's unfortunate that people litter out of their cars but it happens. If I see any trash in my yard, I'll pick it up and throw it out. If Crazy Neighbor Lady sees any trash in her yard, she'll throw it into her neighbors yards so it's not her problem. Over the period of a month I catch her 3 different times on camera throwing trash from her property on to mine. She physically picks it up, comes on to my property and sets it down well on to my side of the front yard when nobody is home. To some, it may sound like I'm going to the extremes to try and screw this lady over, but given her past history that I've heard from other neighbors, I'm stomping out the fire (her) before it (she) can even get started. Last night, I catch her on camera for the 4th time coming on to my property to throw more trash into my yard. This time she has her dogs with her and are letting her dogs roam around without a leash in my yard. I had finally had enough and called the police to come out to look at my videos and see if there was anything I can do about her. Police officer comes out looks at the videos and I read him the journal of all of the interactions of had with her and he's kind of blown away with all of the work I've put into protecting myself. My neighbor is a huge PITA for my city's police department (she'll make calls to them for things like the kids being too loud in the playground across the street from us.. unnecessary stuff) and they have no problem slapping her with charges if legitimate charges can be made. I could have pressed charges against her for trespassing, littering and not having her dog on a leash, but I opted to just have the police officer go over to her house and give her a warning. I don't really have the time to take off from work to go to court. I told him to let her know that if she's ever caught on my property or throwing trash on to my property, then I will press charges. He was licking his chops to go over there and ream her ass out. The city police HATE her and like many others have probably mentioned, they take all of her calls with a grain of salt. Now I'm just waiting to see what the next chapter has in store for me. I'm sure she was told that she has been caught on camera so I'll have to wait and see if she tries looking for my cameras. BTW these cameras are fun to watch. It's like I'm living next to a 61 year old child. TLDR: Bought cameras, caught neighbor coming on to my property to throw trash on my property on 4 different occasions, finally got sick of her shit, called police, they verbally thrashed her [Pennsylvania] This is incredibly stupid, but my neighbor keeps calling the police because of leaves from my tree July 28, 2017 (3 months after prev. update) Per mods request, please keep comments on topic I truly would like to know what legal rights I have against this. Hello r/legaladvice. I feel like I'm starting to become a regular on this sub ever since I bought my house. Long story short, my neighbor will call the police if ANY leaves from my tree or ANY grass blades from me cutting my grass go into her yard (yes, she stands out there and watches me cut the grass). Last week we talked to one another with a police officers presence so we can try and work something out. Basically, the moment she sees a leaf in her yard, she gets pissed. I told her I'm not home all the time to constantly monitor every single fucking leaf that falls from my tree. Oh, the tree is on the OPPOSITE side of the yard from her. My yard is not littered with leaves and the police even said that my yard looks fine but she persists on calling the police out every time anything comes into her yard. I have done my research on the situation, as dumb as I think it is, but once a leaf falls from a tree, I'm not liable for what happens to it. That's what internet articles say at least. Could anybody produce any sort of Pennsylvania state legal documentation that says that leaves falling from a tree is not a crime? Lol. I can't believe I am even here asking this but I'm getting really sick of the police coming out for everything I do outside. I just want to present it to the police/neighbor so it stops. edit: Since this blew up a little bit, and others have asked what I have done to her for her to do what she is doing, I will give a little more information about the past few months. Within a month of moving into the house this past December, I was out back after dark (it was no later than 8pm) breaking down some boxes that we had left over from moving. I took a quick break from breaking them down and I see this hand throwing trash into my yard over the fence that separates our yards. I couldn't believe it. Up until this point, we had one interaction with one another and that was when we were both outside shoveling snow. I introduced myself and she introduced herself and immediately warned me that she likes to call the police on anything that she sees wrong in the neighborhood. Basically bragging about it. From that greeting to the trash being thrown into my yard, no interactions with one another. I bought a security camera system shortly after that to see how often she does it. We had bits and pieces of trash in our backyard shortly after moving in and it was always on the side of the yard that was up against her fence. We just thought that it was whatever trash that the wind picked up and would stop at the fence and we would pick it up whenever we would see it. Within 3 days of having the cameras, she's doing it again, and is on camera doing it. I waited for it to happen on 3 more occasions. After the 2nd time I had it on video, anytime I saw her outside when I was outside, I tried to say hello and talk to her about it, but as soon as I said hello, she would go inside. After the 3rd time of throwing trash into my yard and being unsuccessful at talking to her about it, I called the police. There was no reason for her to be throwing trash into my yard. The police gave her a warning. The trash in our backyard that we thought was getting blown there stopped as well. Crazy. After that, I had been nothing but nice to her and would say hello whenever I saw her. I really don't want to have problems, but I had to do something about the trash being thrown into our yard. Anytime I would say hello, I would get ignored... She even went as far as to say she was going to charge me with harassment if I didn't stop... What? Last week the police came out again for leaves in her yard. He suggested that we talk to one another while he was there to listen. She explained herself. She thinks that we are not maintaining our property well enough and is upset that we aren't outside to pick up every leaf that falls from our tree and doesn't want any grass clippings blowing into her yard. The police officer looked over at my yard and looked back at her and said there is nothing wrong with my yard and that it looks better than a lot of properties in our city. She said that she bought her house that doesn't have a tree because she didn't want to clean up leaves. Newsflash, every house on our block has a tree except for hers. She "just wishes" that we would take care of our yard better. Again, the police officer enforced to her that according to city law, our yard was fine. We agreed with each other that if we have any problems with one another that we would talk to each other first before getting the police involved. 8 days later she called the police again for grass and leaves being in her yard. As far as I could tell, there wasn't any grass left behind. And when I mean in her yard, I'm not saying it is in the middle of her yard. It is mere inches from where our yards meet in her yard. She has been nothing but a headache since we moved in and it's only getting worse. I have done nothing to her other than make sure that she stopped throwing trash in my yard. Why she started to do that? I don't know. Crazy neighbor is possibly killing my grass. July 17, 2018 (1 year after prev. update) I just posted this in r/lawncare and I’m not exactly sure which sub is the best to submit it to. Long story short, I have an absolutely crazy neighbor. I’ve talked about her in r/legaladvice because of her antics and how I should handle them. I’ve even had to get police involved in the petty stuff she does to have her knock it off. On to the killing of my grass. About a month ago, I notice that all of my grass along the fence between my neighbor and myself was completely dried up and dead. The dead grass starts about 6 inches from the fence and goes the entire length of the fence (probably 75 feet). Crazy neighbor lady’s grass is completely fine along the fence. The only thing I can think of is that she’s spraying something under the fence onto my side to kill my grass. Now I’ve got nothing but ugly weeds growing up along the fenc . Today, I noticed a brown circle (probably 2 foot in diameter) of dead grass in my backyard. It’s no more than 10 feet away from my neighbors fence. My girlfriend said she took our two small dogs out to go to the bathroom and they were rolling around and eating the dead grass from the same area. The only thing I can think of is that my crazy neighbor threw a cup of something over the fence to kill the grass, but I’m not sure why the dogs would be so interested in it. If it was something to kill the grass I’m definitely not cool with my dogs rolling around and sniffing and eating whatever is there. So question 1 is: What are some solutions I can do along the fence to stop the grass from dying? The only thing I can think of is some sort of decorative brick that runs the entire length of the fence and grow the grass back. Question 2 is: Does anybody have any sort of idea what could have caused the 2 foot circle of dead grass but also why my dogs were so attracted to it? We live on the outskirts of a city, so there isn’t much wildlife that could just waltz into the yard, urinate and take off. Plus, it seemed to have happened over night and is rather large. And yes, before anybody mentions it, I do have cameras. I just don’t have any watching the back yard. I’ll have to reposition them now. Final Update - rareddit Nov 3, 2019 (Nearly 3 years since 1st post) Editors Note: edited out previously rehash of prior posts I'm going to cover some things in this post that may have been talked about in my other posts (I'm not going through and re-reading all of them). We were warned that my neighbor has a problem with everything imaginable from the get go. We didn't realize how bad it really was until we were living next to her/them (60-something year old lady and a 40-something year old son. Majority of the problems was with her though). Over the past 3 years we learned a lot about them from various people. Mainly that my neighbor likes to stir up problems to get people pissed off at them. Then when people get pissed off enough, they retaliate against my neighbor and once that happens, my neighbor will take them to court. Believe me, I know it sounds fucking crazy, but that's how it is. Example: When I had the police out for her trespassing and littering in my yard, I could have had her cited for those two things, but the police talked me out of it and told me that she would take it to court and fight it, even if she was going to lose. Also, the people that live on the other side of her (her other neighbors), have been going back and forth in court for the past 15 years with her. I never got any specifics on what, but from the one and only time I talked to those people, that's what they told me. My thought process is that she wants to get money out of people from taking them to court. I've lived next to those people for 3 years and I have no idea what their motivation is in life or why they do what they do. So my neighbor likes to call the police and fire department a lot. Like.. a lot. I have a friend who took an IT job at the call center that receives calls for people calling for the police and fire department for the entire county. The people taking the calls told my IT friend that my neighbor is the most frequent caller in the entire county. The obvious thing to do is to let it iron itself out and the police and fire companies will realize that she's full of shit right? Wrong. I asked my IT friend how she can get away with calling that much. He said that when she makes a call it's not really specific enough to blow off, but specific enough to where there might be an actual problem. A gray area. Example: If somebody is having a fire in their backyard (legally, following all the laws of our city) she will call the fire department concerned about a fire because there's a lot of smoke in the neighborhood. This also goes for anybody that cooks out on their grill in the summer time (especially if you have a charcoal grill). She sees smoke, she calls fire department. The thing with her calls though is that 99% of the time they are bullshit, but if there was an actual problem and she called about it and nobody responded she would take the city to the cleaners over it. It gets old whenever the police and/or fire department show up to your door when you are doing normal every day activities. They were the most bizarre people to live next to. I've tried to figure them out but I simply couldn't. The best way I can describe it is this: You're playing a game with her whether or not you want to. And that game is home ownership. She makes the rules of the game. And when you break one of the rules of the game that she made up, she will have a referee look into it (police/fire). If the referees don't find anything wrong, she will get upset and start doing things like throw trash into your yard or kill your grass. The obvious answer to all of this is to stand my ground and I did. But once you fight back, things are only going to snowball with the neighbor. Which is why we decided to move. The people behind her actually just moved as well because of her. This was our first home and people always say that owning a home isn't easy. It's not, but living next to that neighbor made things so much worse. At one point early on while living there, I asked myself if we are bad neighbors. Nope, we just didn't do things the way she wanted us to. So we put our house up for sale and find somebody to buy it at full price and they would pay closing costs as well. We closed a few days ago and walked out with the check. We drove by the house we just sold and saw that the new people pulled right up behind my neighbors car (that's another thing you DID NOT DO. You do not park behind her car or she will call the police for you being double parked or something... it's a public street btw). We see that they are parked right behind her car. Me and my girlfriend looked at each other and laughed. We then get a call from our realtor asking if we still had the keys from the old house. Shit! Forgot to hand them over at settlement. I wasn't about to go back to the old house and drop them off so I had my realtor do it. She dropped the keys off and then called me again (she's aware of how crazy my old neighbor is). She says, "You're never going to believe this.. The people that bought your house already had a run in with the neighbor. They said she came out bitching about where they parked and that only she can park in front of her house and that if they don't move she'll have to call the police". The people that bought my house then said to my realtor "What's up with this Lady?". To which my realtor said, "I'm not real sure, my seller always said they were quiet people that kept to themselves". This is only the beginning of a long road for the people that bought my house. It wasn't even 30 minutes after they pulled up in front of the house and they already had a problem with the neighbor. I wish I could have told the people buying my house to not buy it because of the neighbor. I don't want anybody to go through what we did, but if I did tell people, then I would still be living the nightmare. Recommendations for privacy along this fence?
I’m a total gardening novice and would love some help identifying a good tree to plant all along this fence line. My main priorities are privacy and to make my yard a bit more pleasing to the eye. Ideally they will be tall to block the view of my neighbors house as much as possible. I also want them to be pretty compact, as fast growing as possible, and provide privacy year round. I plan to remove the rock and replace it with mulch. The yard gets south light and the photo I took is facing east. If possible, I’d also love to know approximately how much I could expect to spend on a project like this. I’m estimating the fence line I want to cover is 40-50ft. Thank you so much! submitted by /u/Then-Decision-8627 to r/DenverGardener [link] [comments]

Hardy, low maintenance, well behaved privacy plants for fence line
Hello Gardeners, I have about 40 ft of fence along the back of my property that I'd like to grow some privacy plants along. My preference would be native alberta options, but this is not a requirement. Currently, there is a ton of leggy wild roses growing in that area, which makes walking through them unpleasant. I am looking for some suggestions that would fill in the following 1) low maintenance, low mess. I need something that responds well to aggressive pruning as needed. 2) Well behaved (no suckers thank you so much). There is a golf course along my back fence. I do not want something that will spread aggressively into the golf course and cause maintenance and relationship issues with them. 3) tolerant of growing adjacent to pines. The fence line has an unobstructed view of the sky, however it does not receive full sun due to being shadowed by the pine trees for a portion of the day. 4) no taller than 2m-3m 5) drought tolerant. Once established, i don't want to have to keep watering it submitted by /u/manlymann to r/Albertagardening [link] [comments]

Your kids don’t have to continue to play with my kid but they also can’t continue to play in my yard…
I’m going do a TL:DR here but I’m ok with being called an AH here because I’m not rewarding shitty behavior. I have big yard that all the kids in the neighborhood (all same age or 1-2 years older and younger than my kid) like to play in. Dead end street, we have a lot of fun stuff - trees and treehouse, creek, in ground trampoline, playground and in the summer I do sprinkler and slip and slide play situation (we have a well and it’s pretty shady). I own a double lot plus the additional empty lot on the side and the neighbors on each side have fences along their property lines and it’s marked by trees - creek in the back - pretty clear on ownership. Anyhow, when they were all younger (3-4yo) my kids speech differences were NBD (he has SCD) but as they’ve gotten older they tease him about it a lot. Anyway a month ago they made him cry and bullied him so I told them to go home. One of the kids said my kid was weird and they don’t like playing with him I said cool you don’t have to. The next day these kids came back to my yard to play and my kid came out and they told him to go away (in his yard lol) so I came out and told them to leave. Two of the parents came to ME to tell ME that I’m being unreasonable (?) to which I explained the situation your kids don’t want to play with my son (they made him cry they called him weird) so why exactly are they entitled to my home and my sons stuff? Please make it make sense?! Add: Thank you to all the people flagging the liability issues! We will get the tree fenced off - the trampoline is but we need a quote for the playground equipment in the back! Update: We have a temporary fence going around the treehouse and have put up no trespassing signs. We’re getting a quote for a privacy fence and we’re going to submit a permit to the town this week after we get it and my husband and father in law will get going on installation (FIL is a builder/contractor). submitted by /u/TurbulentBat8328 to r/Mommit [link] [comments]

Trees or Bushes for Privacy, Fast Growing, Tall, Non-Deciduous
ETA - I definitely need low-maintenance (or no maintenance!) and am not looking to create a "solid wall". I sort of have about 10 feet of that with the awful privet trees that I loathe Hi, Everyone. I'm in Western WA, about 30 miles northeast from Seattle. I need to find fast-growing native plants for privacy on one side of my house. The total area is rather long. Currently, there's nothing but a row of maybe six privet trees (?) in the front that are too much for me to maintain and I'll be looking to have removed and replaced. But I also need to extend this "division" between myself and the neighbors on that side both in the front and along the fence in the back. I'm looking for minimal pruning, and something that isn't deciduous at least for the front yard. My home is at the back of a cul-de-sac on a very steep street, and the storm drain is located in front of my driveway. It's a bit of a struggle already for me to keep the drain clear of leaves on rainy days to keep so my garage doesn't flood. The areas get full sun most of the day. Thanks so much for any help! submitted by /u/ArcherFluffy594 to r/pnwgardening [link] [comments]

Neighbor Destroyed My Backyard!
EDITS: Wow, surprised by how many comments. Thanks for those of you that are helpful. Further clarification: - Survey- yes the back yard was previously surveyed and had survey stakes. We did this with a prior neighbor that we had a wonderful, amicable relationship with. We dealt with each other in a reasonable and respectful manner. You’ll notice a “hole” on the right side of the back fence. There was a huge Holley tree that dropped terrible leaves and berries. We both hated it. It was split 50/50 over the property line. We split the cost to remove it. Normal, wonderful neighbor communication. As it should be. - Clematis- some comment that it was going wild and on their property. The photo does show a big rose bush. That is definitely on their property and they had every right to remove it. Though it would have been neighborly to at least discuss it first to let us know since we did 100% of the maintenance on it and kept it cut back (sometimes it overtook a large part of the deck). The clematis trunk was against our fence, and we kept it maintained on our trellis. It was not “out of control”. We have landscapers that ensured it was well manicured. It was a wonderful part of our back deck. - Fence location- this was a prior owner. I hate them for what they did. Yes I could have immediately rectified it, but we have a 100 year old house. The list of projects and upgrades is long. Plus I would have destroyed the nice clematis. That project just stayed at the bottom of the list. We also always have had good relationships with all our neighbors. Of course now - YES 100% - there will be a new fence as tall as possible right up to our edge of the property line! For fun - check out the other error our idiot prior owner did with the right side of the fence. Totally on my side neighbor’s property right against their garage. I will be rectifying that as well, moving the fence totally on my property. What a pain in the ass! _______________________________________ ORIGINAL POST: I need help in determining the best course of action based on a situation I’m having with a neighbor. My house is on a very small lot. My entire backyard is a deck. The deck has a fence around it. A prior owner had installed the deck and fence. They ended up putting the fence around 12 inches from the property line on our side of the property (so there are 12 inches on the back side of the fence that is my property). Many years ago (I’ve been here 25 years), I believe at least 40 years ago, the person that owns my house planted a clematis vine on the back side of the fence, but on my property. This vine was quite substantial as it is so old. It was weaved in the trellis on the top of the fence along the entire fenced in area for the backyard/deck. There also were some other small trees along the fence line. I am disabled with multiple sclerosis, and I quite enjoyed the deck area and spent a lot of time there during the summers. A person bought the house behind us, and a few months passed and they started doing some cleanup work. I heard landscapers doing a lot of work near my beck fence. I went over and said - hey, DO NOT TOUCH my plantings next to my fence! We find out later from the landscaper that he told the owner that some of the plants were an issue, but the new owner said tear everything out! As a result, we have lost all privacy, and our fence has basically been destroyed by the removal of our clematis. We are devastated at the loss of our wonderful back deck area. The new neighbor basically poo poos any of our feelings and acts as if he did nothing wrong by clearing out “weeds”. Any ideas on what can be done? Here are a couple pictures. submitted by /u/RobWSeattle to r/treelaw [link] [comments]

AIO- for putting in a privacy fence?
I (35 F) Just want to start out by saying being a mother of boys myself I totally understand the total chaos that it can be. I have 4 boys close in age and I am very aware that they are feral. That being said I will get into the issue. A little background. We live on 60 acres and a little over a year and half ago the property behind ours was purchased by a family. The husband is building it himself and it's taking sometime to finish. The house has running clean well water that they get from the underground aquifer on our land. They had to pay us to drill a well that they ran to the house. However they have not put in a septic system, or a lagoon (where we live these are the only two ways to remove sewage). Grey water or water from sinks and showers can be diverted to garden or whatever. Because they don't have a septic or lagoon they have an outhouse all of that is fine (this will be important later). The family is a bit quirky, they homeschool their 4 boys, and they have a very laid back parenting style. The kids are allowed to kind of run wild with very little supervision. So about a year ago I was out in our back pasture right by where they built the house clearing brush from the drainage creek. Something I have to do every early spring so that the rain does not over flow the ponds and flood the pasture. I was working away listening to a podcast like I do when I'm doing this kind of work. When I happened to look up and saw their 3 year old son butt naked playing on their swing set. Surprising yes, but not overall alarming since it was their property and I mean maybe they were potty training and or whatever, and they do have an outhouse instead of a bathroom. I didn't think much of it and just finished my work and moved on down. however it didn't take long of me to realize that this is the norm for their boys. later that summer we had a big storm and the husband called to tell me that a tree branch had taken out a section of the barbed wire fence . I thanked him seeing as at the time we had 20 head of heifer calf pairs in the pasture. I came around and he helped me string up new barbed wire all the while behind him three of the boys ran around butt naked. The oldest being 8 and youngest being 2. They have another son that is 12 but he is introverted and keeps to himself, and clothed. I was slightly uncomfortable, and it was weird, but again their property their kids. It really doesn't affect me much since its the back pasture. Fast forward a month or two and I found the naked boys playing in the pasture that backs up to their house, swimming in the cow pond. Which is really dangerous. First of all these are not pet cows and if the heifers feel you are threatening their babies in any way they will charge and that is a big animal, also we put the bull in at the end of summer and that is really dangerous. Also the pond is not the cleanest pond. I mean the cows get in there and submerge, and not only that but we have seen alligator snapping turtles in the ponds on our land. But the fact they were swimming in the pond with no adult supervision at all. I'm not normally strict about people being on the property and their oldest has come over when we had moved the cows to the other pasture and he catches frogs and turtles at the pond. But there are just so many things that could go wrong and I would have never forgiven myself if one of the boys had gotten hurt. So I gathered towels and walked them back to the house. I could not find either of the parents so I sent a message just asking that the kids stay out of the pasture for safety and my peace of mind. Fast forward to early fall. The final straw was when my 14 year old son and a few of his friends were out in that back pasture riding dirt bikes, in the drainage creek and he said that two of the boys came over to the fence to say hi, but that he and his friends felt really uncomfortable because the boys were again naked. I messaged the parents and asked if she could make sure the kids were wearing pants or shorts. She did not take it well but I really wasn't sure how to better word it. She called my son a pedophile and that he just shouldn't be in the back part of our property. It is the best place for dirt bike riding and it is our property. I get that living in the country on land gives you some privacy and all but they decided to build their house and yard right on our fence line. They could have moved it more to the middle of their property and we would have a tree windbreak in between.I'm sorry but we all have a right to be there but if we had lived in town or the city she would have had lots more complaints over it. I told her that I would not be stopping my boys from doing things they love on a part of our land. Next thing I knew the police showed up at our house saying that they had a complaint that my son was peeping. Thankfully they investigated and talked to all of my sons friends who were there and nothing came of it. By then it was cold and we stayed in most of the time. So this spring my husband and I decided to bite the bullet and put in a privacy fence just along their property. It was very costly but we decided that it was in everyone's best interest. They are our neighbors and there isn't anything we can do about that. But we can separate the property with something more than barbed wire. But when the family behind us saw the fence going in they absolutely freaked out. saying we are ruining their view from their windows. They liked looking over our field and seeing the cows and etc. They and another neighbor(who isn't affected by the fence) are saying we are over reacting and they attempted to take it to court, but again it is our property and the fence is with in code. So nothing came of it. However it has become a pretty big discussion in the area and I'm really not a confrontational person so I'm second guessing the whole fence because the kids will eventually grow up and wear clothes. did we over react? submitted by /u/Old_Assumption6599 to r/AmIOverreacting [link] [comments]

Which privacy trees are best for noise reduction?
I have a 50 foot span along my back fence which separates us from our neighbors. Lately, their kids have started hanging out in the backyard a lot more with their friends, which is awesome to see in this day and age. However, with that comes the noise. It's difficult to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or read a book when kids are constantly screaming on the swings etc. when we bought the house, there were 20-ft emeralds surrounding the property, which have been okay for a while, but lately they are badly thinning out, and some have completely died. Now I'm thinking of replacing these trees with brand new ones, but I don't want to wait for years in order to enjoy privacy. I need the privacy immediately. I'm thinking of getting 10 ft emeralds or excelsas installed. several marketplace sellers are encouraging the excelsas because they say they are more dense, but from the pictures I'm seeing, they seem to get really thin as you go up the tree. Are these the best choice for me? or should I just replace them with the similar emeralds that I'm going to take out? if I get emeralds, how far apart should I space them in order to have a tight wall. I know that trees arent going to block out all the sound, but with the dead trees right in the middle of the yard, I'm noticing the neighbors' noise quite a bit this year. I'm hoping it will make some difference by getting new trees planted. Any suggestions please? should I go with the excelsa (Red cedar) the trees at 3ft apart, or perhaps emeralds at 2 ft apart? Or any other suggestions to get a quick privacy barrier setup? I'll leave a picture of my current setup where some trees are dead, some are dying and thinning, and some are on their way towards death. submitted by /u/Ok_Advantage7537 to r/landscaping [link] [comments]

Best trees for privacy (Colorado)
Just bought my first home, I’m in northern Colorado. I’m wanting to plant a privacy screen along the back fence. What evergreen trees or tall shrubs actually work well here in Colorado and can block some of the views? Or would doing this in a back year look odd? Appreciate any species recommendations or spacing advice! submitted by /u/hebdbd-chc to r/landscaping [link] [comments]

A developer is planning on digging a sewer trench along my fence line, will my trees survive
I tried my best to provide good angles of my trees and the property line. The developer is pressing me to sign an easement agreement so he can run a sewer to the 8 homes he is putting in around me. I'm trying to get an idea of how bad the impact would be. My trees consist of Siberian elm, mulberry, Austrian pine, berch, box elder maple and a few others I'm not familiar with. I realize many of these varieties are considered trash trees but they are mine and I love the privacy and shade they provide. I would guess they stand roughly 50' to 60' tall. The sewer line trench will be 10 feet deep. He claims everything will be restored like he was never there but from what I've read so far this will likely kill many of my trees over the next few years and make them more succeptible to wind fall. submitted by /u/rockpapersissorhands to r/arborists [link] [comments]

Suggestions for Privacy Trees from ADU
A few years ago our neighbor added an ADU unit over their garage. They rent it out. The front door entrance and stairs start at the front of the house at their driveway and is visible in our front yard and stairs go above our bedroom window in the front. They overlook the front, all of our side house and entire backyard too. Our neighbors rent it out to people and we would like privacy along the fence in our backyard for us and our kids as well as extend to the front yard. The front yard we are thinking of arborvitaes, but have a lot more room to plant. We have gates on both sides and use the other side as the main gate, but would like to still be able to use this side too. In the backyard, the space between our fence and house is only 5.42ft and we would still like some space for a small walkway to the gate. Any ideas for privacy trees that extend this tall and aren’t invasive? Also we usually won’t have all of this stuff stored on this side, it will be stored in a shed. We live in the PNW and are unsure what to put along the fence. Thank you for any ideas! submitted by /u/PrancingSeagull to r/landscaping [link] [comments]

Trapped Next to a Woman Who Won’t Stop Watching Us
We are a young couple who have lived in our condo for almost seven years. We both work from home and spend a lot of time at the house. We like to take our free time in keeping our home, garden, and patio beautiful because it is where we relax and enjoy our daily life. This neighbor, a woman in her late 50’s, moved in last May from a different state with her 25yo son. She also mentioned she changed houses every other year for a fresh start for the last 10 years. Almost immediately after moving in, she shared her phone number with my husband. He added me to the conversation so we were all included. Despite living with an adult son who was home most of the time, she constantly messaged my husband for random things. Internet questions. Borrowing tools. Asking when trash day was. Messaging when we were away to check where we were. If she saw us sitting on our patio talking, she would physically come over and ask my husband for help with something, even as late as nine at night. Even after my husband redirected all communication to the group chat where I was included, she continued messaging him privately with nonsense excuses. One example was claiming someone knocked on her door late at night. We checked our front camera and no one was there. It was clearly just a reason to text him. She later began asking my husband for job search help in a private message and mentioned that she had been jobless for several years, while also emphasizing that she was financially well off. She repeatedly asked to meet in person and even requested his help as a witness for the sale of her previous home in Florida, explaining that a non relative was required. He did that for her. After that, the requests for help continued. When my husband started to bring me along, she ignored me most of the time or talked over me whenever I spoke. She never made any effort to get to know me or never really engaged, despite my presence. Her attention and conversation remained focused solely on her “Beautiful” life and talking to my husband. Whenever I get a chance I work in the garden. If I’m alone in the garden, she would appear immediately opening her back door super loud. If I said hello first, she would give a quick response and then pretend to be busy on her side, sometimes raking concrete :’D or doing things that clearly did not make sense. We later caught her multiple times peeping through the fence lattice while my husband and I sat on the patio enjoying our evenings. A couple of months after she moved in, she placed a bird feeder near the open area next to our garden. I love roses and we have a small rose garden that we both put a lot of effort into. Soon birds were leaving droppings all over our patio stones, fence, and pavement. The feeding also attracted raccoons, mice (another neighbor mentioned), and deer. The deer began eating our rose bushes after feeding from her open feeder. We politely let her know about the situation. She messaged my husband saying she would take care of it and explained she was new to the area and did not understand bird feeding. She removed the feeder for a couple of days, then added two more later that same week. Over the next month she added back the original open feeder and another feeder with a camera facing our garden. These feeders were placed exactly in areas where there were openings she could stand at to watch us and directly behind the fence. Since then, our outdoor furniture has been spotted with bird seed and droppings. This was never an issue before she moved in. We also noticed that whenever I garden alone, she comes out immediately and starts slamming doors or objects loudly enough to startle me. This happens every time I go out alone. There is no slamming when my husband is present. He tested this by sitting somewhere she could not see him, and the slamming started as soon as she saw me alone through her camera. When we work in the front of the house, she suddenly develops a walking routine that only exists on those days and times. Same path. Same timing. When we work in the backyard, she suddenly acts like she is gardening as well, even though we had never seen her do so before. She often stops walking entirely and begins chatting with my husband instead. If we are not outside, she does not come out at all. Because she was repeatedly peeping through the fence and standing about ten to twelve feet from where we sit, my husband installed a garden camera and added a privacy screen along the top of the fence. After that, she changed tactics. She accidentally mentioned to her son that she keeps her camera on live 24/7 so she can watch birds. And we heard it while we were sitting on our patio. Our patio is about 10-15 feet from her bird camera and faces part of our garden. She recently started working last month and still keeps the camera live while at work. If she hears us outside or if we have relatives over, she will often leave work early and come home within fifteen minutes. It is consistent enough to feel intentional. We have repeatedly noticed that topics of conversation we discuss privately are later repeated back to us or mirrored by her. For example, we purchased a crepe myrtle tree and discussed planting it in our backyard, specifically mentioning how much I love the white flowers. The following week, she approached us and stated that she was thinking about getting a white crepe myrtle for her backyard. When I pointed to ours and asked, “Like ours?” She briefly looked in that direction and responded, “Oh, yeah,” before immediately changing the subject and directing her attention back to my husband, as if she had been unaware we had one. This is despite the fact that she stands in that exact area facing our patio and garden almost daily. In another instance, we set up a Christmas village in our bedroom, which she saw through the window when walking by. Later, she came over our patio and commented on us decorating outside and said, “We only do Christmas villages, ever since my son was little”. There have also been multiple occasions where private jokes or phrases exchanged between my husband and me were later repeated by her that she shouldn't know. This pattern has occurred consistently over time and contributes to the feeling that our conversations and activities are being monitored and mirrored. One night around 11:45 ish during a severe storm, she privately messaged my husband saying our privacy screen was moving. It raised the obvious question of how she even knew. After that, my husband decided to stop responding altogether because she continued messaging him privately at weird times despite repeated redirection to the group chat. Since then, her behavior escalated. She began slamming doors and banging walls inside her unit loudly enough to shake our building, often between six and eleven at night. She began coming next to our patio multiple times a week and taking photos from different angles, which started after we installed the privacy screen. She still pretends to feed birds at the corner of the fence immediately after we sit outside and peep from the edge of the fence, which we can see on our camera. Sometimes she pretends she is not there at all, then later our camera shows her quietly coming out through a different door to listen from the other side of the fence for as long as we’re sitting and talking. Maybe the days where her solar camera doesn’t have enough charge. If we have guests over, she walks back and forth staring into our house and pretending she has a new walking routine that only exists on those days. When we are inside trying to enjoy a calm evening, she bangs and slams repeatedly. Our condo is normally soundproof. The amount of force required to make that much noise feels deliberate. Over a 7 year span, we haven’t heard anyone else ever, including them when they first moved in. Our front camera has also detected her standing right at the edge of her property near our bedroom window, close enough to hear conversations. This happens almost nightly between 7pm to 1am. After adjusting the camera toward that area, she no longer stands that close, but we still hear her slamming doors coming out and standing nearby. She also started sitting in her blacked out minivan next to our patio from 1 minute to 30 minutes at a time, sometimes as early as 5 or 6 in the morning when it is still dark and as late as 11pm. Some days she opens her window for a couple minutes and records from different angles before leaving. Some days, she will be sitting there like 5ft away from me next to our garden watching from her car where I cannot see her because of her tinted window, which makes me feel super uncomfortable and left every times. This has become a routine. More recently, she began coming outside with her son and behaving almost like a couple, and standing or walking next to our garden camera. They speak loudly showing affection and her new love for the birds and next bird feeder. And asking questions like who they work with. It almost feels like they never talk inside their house for months and that this is being performed intentionally for the camera. This started the day after my husband and I were out walking together holding hands. Since then, whenever we go out for a walk, they appear a couple of hours later after work and do the same. On days we do not go out, they do not either. The timing is consistent enough to feel intentional. I genuinely believe the son is largely unaware of what’s happening and is simply following her lead. There is another older couple who live on the opposite side of her unit. They occasionally spend time outside together and have also experienced issues with her behavior. The husband mentioned to my husband that shortly after she moved in, she reported them to the HOA because their dog occasionally urinated near a large tree on her side of the property. He is aware of this report because he serves on the HOA board and has access to the records. More recently, my husband was nominated and elected to replace the former HOA president, which further confirmed this information. He also shared that on Christmas Day, while he and his wife were inside hosting guests, this neighbor out to their area and cut down their cactuses and a bush without permission. When they came outside and noticed what was happening, she immediately went back into her unit. This information was shared with us to provide additional context, as it suggests a pattern of behavior toward other neighbors and not just our household. She has also mentioned that she moves every one to two years, which appears consistent with ongoing neighbor-related issues rather than isolated incidents. Two days ago, I began receiving social media comments from a newly created account making assumptions about my appearance, marriage, and life, accusing me of using my looks to get what I want. The comments clearly came from someone who knows nothing about me, my life, or my relationship. She also comes out in the dark around five or six in the morning throwing bird seed everywhere, including right next to our side. When we are not home or on vacation, she does not feed birds at all, sometimes for weeks. When we added a small screen behind her camera and feeders, she stopped feeding. When we later moved the screen to that way later we can install a better one, she immediately started feeding again. Almost obsessively several times a day. Our night vision camera has caught her trying to hide in the dark while throwing seed behind our bushes. We love birds, but this has turned our space into a mess. We have spent a significant amount of money on deer repellent, pest control, constant cleaning, and repairing stained furniture fabric. There has not been a single peaceful day since she moved in. All we want is peace in our own home and the freedom to enjoy our patio without being watched, listened to, or intimidated. Instead, it feels like she has positioned herself to orbit our lives, our home, and our relationship, inserting herself into moments that should be private. Her constant presence and monitoring feel invasive. This no longer feels incidental. It feels like an ongoing intrusion into our private life. I am done being the “sweet” neighbor. I need serious advice on how to handle this from anyone who has dealt with something similar or knows how to handle situations like this properly. submitted by /u/Key_Truth7815 to r/neighborsfromhell [link] [comments]

flipper next door cut down all trees along shared fence - what now?
I'm getting a survey done, but that won't be able to be done until January. They bought the house several months ago and it's been a nightmare sense, obviously. They started by clearing out every tree along the property line, even some growing through my chainlink fence. I'm 99% certain the fence is on my property, as it's connected in the back and to the side of my house, and not connected at all on the neighbor's side, but it isn't clear and I didn't get a survey done when I bought the house two years ago. Most of the trees were pretty young, no more than 6" diameter trunk, but there were at least 10 cut down. Privacy's completely been destroyed in the front and back yard. I did manage to contact the owner of the house today, and when I asked if they'd done a survey, she was very defensive and said I'd have to get my own. submitted by /u/Nyanunix to r/treelaw [link] [comments]

People wanting access to my private property to fish on the river
Location: Michigan I recently bought a house in northern Michigan with ~5 acres and 500 feet of frontage on a nice river known for fishing. It seems our property is considered a prime spot! After moving in, we were visited by our next-door neighbor and the mayor of the town, who asked if they could fish on our property. I was away and my wife agreed, mentioning that they should text or call us beforehand. We have a recused pitbull and we want to make sure she’s leashed when people are outside, as well as wanting to know who’s on our property and when. Since we’re new to the area and want a positive start with our neighbors, we talked and felt it was best to allow them to fish. Last weekend, while walking along our property, my dog alerted me to someone by the river. It turned out to be an older gentleman fishing along the bank. I greeted him by saying good morning and took my dog inside, assuming it was legal for people to walk along the river. I now know that it's still considered trespassing to be on the bank. I personally don’t care if people fish along the river as long as they stay down by the waters edge. There's a steep incline from the ledge by the river and about 10-20 ft up to the rest of the property so I didn't think it was very accessible. My dog won't go down there so I'm not worried she'll go after anyone down there. Later that day, my dog was going nuts because someone had driven their side-by-side across the property from the road, down our trail through the woods and down towards the river. They had cleared small trees in the woods to make the trail wide enough for them and then parked facing our house a hundred feet away. I went to confront them and met a younger man (maybe early 30s). I asked his name and if he had gotten permission from the previous owners and explained we are the new owners. He claimed they had permission from the new owners, turned away from me continuing to fish and called his dad over. The way he acted seemed very disrespectful. His dad ended up being the older guy I saw that morning, also the mayor my wife met before who was more polite. My wife and I reiterated our stance: we’re okay with them fishing, but we need to know before they just show up. I realize now that I should have also mentioned we don't want them driving or cutting the trees on our property. To maintain our privacy, I’m considering installing trail cameras, signs, and possibly fencing the entire area if they show up unannounced again. I also reviewed the county GIS and it shows the mayor owns a larger frontage of river downstream from us, so I don't think it’s even necessary for him to come up to our property. It's also to hopefully discourage littering. I've seen many beer cans and bottles along the river, assuming that floated there from upstream but I've also found beer cans and little plastic vapes up on the 10ft edge. The water never gets high enough to carry it up there. It's probably not the mayor or the neighbor but if his kid acted like that, I wonder if he thinks he's allowed to come up and do whatever. How can I go about this to protect our privacy while also keeping the peace with the locals and the mayor? I want to set clear boundaries without causing any animosity. Thank you for any advice. TL;DR: The mayor and his son showed up on my property unannounced, drove on it, and cut down trees to fish. We gave them permission to fish, but I’m concerned about the boundaries. submitted by /u/Cirrusously to r/legaladvice [link] [comments]

[New Update]: Neighbor is acting erratically over me building a fence in the front of my house.
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Genuh Originally posted to r/neighborsfromhell Previous BoRUs: 1 [New Update]: Neighbor is acting erratically over me building a fence in the front of my house. NEW UPDATE MARKED WITH ---- Trigger Warnings: mental health issues, possible dementia, controlling behavior, harassment, slander, trespassing Mood Spoilers: frustrating and scary RECAP Original Post: March 19, 2025 —- I will update as things occur check below for updates—— We used to get along great with our next door neighbor. For context she is an older polish women who lives alone and is very OCD about her grass. She will pick up leaves as they fall down from the tree and pick up leaves off her grass even if it rained. Anyways she has a front fence that she didn’t run all down her property line. She stopped it at the front so her whole right side of her home is exposed next to ours. Then picked up the fence when her back yard begins. We had more than a few times where strangers would enter the side of our house and actually try and enter our home. So my husband decided to put up a front fence. At the time my neighbor was redoing her backyard fence and she knew my husband also wanted to do his backyard fence so she recommend her guy. As she followed up to see if my husband called the guy to get the work my husband told her that he did and that he also asked the guy for a quote for the front as well. She immediately lost it!!! Since then she has been acting so crazy! It started with her calling the Alderman and she wrongfully accused us of taking her land. The Alderman came and spoke with us and sided with me and my husband. The problem is that she wants to use our front walkway that’s on the side of our house to access her right side of her property. (the side that she didn’t fence) So she fenced her self out and has always just went on our property to access her side. She’s mad cause with our fence she can’t just walk in and go to her side of her house anymore. We told her we would give her a key and she said NO!!. Since she accused us of stealing her land we didn’t feel comfortable about allowing her to come and go off our property anymore but she didn’t care. She called a handy man to install a security camera and he worked on our side of the property and she didn’t ask. I asked the guy to please inform her for any future work she will need to ask us for permission before she enters our property. The security camera was to watch us because she was so paranoid we would build a fence. This Saturday we had the company begin work and she totally lost it. She harassed the workers telling them to stop work and she was accusing us of stealing land. She threatened to report them to the city and to call the inspector on us. My husband had to stay outside with guys as they worked and when he went in she would come back out and harass them. Then SHE CALLED THE POLICE!! 4 police cars came. I don’t know what she told them but it was not the truth because the cops sided with us and told her to stay inside and not bother us. Then Sunday she paces looking at our fence posts staring! She looked at our fence posts like 10 times on Sunday and then she was pacing our backyard and we have her on camera just staring and pacing and starting in. So creepy. Then Monday she is walking and starting again and she stops on of our neighbors and starts complaining to him about our fence right in front of our house. She continues pacing and staring through the day. Then later that Monday a guy comes and she walks him to our house and he starts looking at our posts. My husband came out this time and asked the guy who is was and why he was interested in looking at our property. He told us that he is a realtor and a good friend of hers and he came because she called him telling him that we stole her property from her and accused us of putting posts on her property which was all lies. We immediately showed him our proof and he agreed with us and tried to mediate with her explaining that we are legally able to build and that she can extend her fence so she is not blocked out. She just said NO! No! And didn’t want to do that. So my husband just left we made sure everything was recorded. Then today! She came outside and stared at our property again just pacing. She did the same in the backyard. Then she went to the front and started flagging down neighbors who she never talks too and starts to complain about our fence calling us bad people and that we are stealing her land. She is acting so malicious. What do I do? It’s crazy Update: so I called the police to see what she accused us of on Saturday. They said that she alleged we were encroaching on her property and blocking her egress. The claim was noted as false by the police. Here’s a rough drawing of me and my neighbor’s property. Hopefully it helps better visualize drawing of property Update 3/20/2025: it snowed and the neighbor came out with her hair curlers in her hair and her pajamas and slippers no jacket so she was in some hurry and went to the front of our house to stare while she was on the phone. Not sure what information she needed from staring at our posts, maybe she needed our address. Looks like she’s trying to call someone else on us. She is straight loosing it as she knows the fence will be completed as soon as weather is better. Relevant Comments OOP clarifies the drawing of the fences and has added a picture for the better visuals OOP: Sorry yes the drawing isn’t the greatest. But to help explain she has a 6ft iron fence in the front of her property. It goes all the way down the left side of her house but on the right side she stopped the fence at the beginning of her house and curved it in. So it leaves the right side of her house not fenced all the way untill the end of her house. She then continues the fence and curves it in when her garage begins. Here’s a picture to help. She is upset because with our front fence she can’t go on our property to get to her side. Everyday she is out staring and calling people to her house to look at it and complain. https://imgur.com/a/tSXRCJv Commenter 1: How old is she? Should Adult Protective Services be notified of her sudden erratic behavior? OOP: She has to be about 70-80 years old. I thought about calling adult protective services too but I’m not sure I’m kinda on the fence. I’m waiting to see if she persists and if she does anything else. But I do believe her behavior now is just weird idk… Commenter 2: I don't think it would be a bad idea to consider. Dementia escalates out of nowhere. One day someone can be very amenable. The next, raging over perceived slights like a lunatic. Does she have any family that looks in on her that could intervene? She's been told by multiple authorities that she is in the wrong, yet she persists with this troubling behavior. OOP: Thank you for that information. It seems like it could be happening to her. She doesn’t have much family. Just one sister who visits sometimes and her son that lives in Poland. I fear if I report her she will do something vindictively and make a false report to DCFs about our children. I wouldn’t put it past her because she keeps lying. She told us her tenant hit her once and we believed her so we called the police. The police came and left basically and it turns out she just wanted to kick them out cause they didn’t pay rent. She then ended up pretending to sell her house to get them out. OOP should get a land survey done to make sure everything is on her property OOP: Yes we have. Everything is 100% on our property. + Yes 100% our property! Her new back fence is actually a few cm on our Property and her left side fence is leaning over to her neighbors. She is actually stealing property. She is accusing us of things she is doing. + We have a survey done our fence is on our property. That’s why she can’t claim that she is now claiming we are stealing her land because she fenced her self out from her side that is about 13 inches of land that has a bunch of rocks. She could run her fence down especially when she re did her back fence this summer but she chose not too. She just doesn’t want us to have a fence cause she has been going on our property for years to get to hers so she feels entitled and she likes being able to get work done in the side of her house without asking us. We never said anything cause we had a good relationship with her before but looking back we should have set boundaries earlier she was clearly taking advantage and acting like she owned our property. Commenter 3: Does she have another way to get in her house? She can go in her front gate? Or what. Seems like cheaper to build a gate in her own property than all these cameras etc OOP: Yeah she has her own front entrance and her own front fence. There is no door and nothing but rocks and 13 inches of property that’s not fenced. She complains she doesn’t have the money but she built a whole new back fence. She just doesn’t want too because she won’t have enough space to fit on the side and have people do work OOP on having security cameras around her house OOP: Yes we have cameras. That’s how we are able to catch all her creepy behaviors. We tried and avoid her we just watch from our cameras to make sure she doesn’t go on our property. When our concrete posts were first put in she went outside to rake the grass in front and was doing it so violently it was weird and then she goes and rakes at our cement on our property!! She is so angry. Then we ask her to not come by our property and she goes “ leave me alone, you bother me please” she says that infront of the neighbors to try and play victim but she’s the one starting all the problems. I told my husband record all convos and stay in view of camera when you talk to her OOP on why she asked the company to relay a message to the neighbor OOP: Yes, because her main language is polish. She speaks very limited English. Luckily our fence company’s workers all speak polish including the owner. What’s crazy is she’s had it explained in her language multiple times too and she still just says “ No NO” or “ Nie” in polish. I’m actually learning a little now trying to figure out how to effectively communicate the message but everyone who speaks with her says she is crazy. Even the polish police officer who was talking with her said she is crazy OOP filing a harassment claim OOP: I’m pretty sure I will file a harassment claim. I’m willing to give her one more chance. She does anything else and I will do it. I have so much video of her doing everything I describe. Even audio recordings too. I need to be extra careful cause she is a liar. She is getting so desperate she is now making a claim that a post that is on her property in the alley was put there by my husband and she wants him to remove it. My husband showed google map pictures proving that post has been there before we bought the property ( we bought it in 2018) and it’s been there for 20 years. It’s all rusted too. Keep in mind she has lived here for 30 years so she knows she was lying. She is literally looking for anything even if she has to lie. Me and my husband were parking in front and was watching from her window with the phone in her hand. OOP on why she asked when the neighbor thinks OOP was stealing her property OOP: From what I gather (because she speaks mainly polish and we have people translating usually) she believes that because we are building our front fence she can no longer walk down our property to go to the side of her house. The side of her house is 13 inches and a bunch of rocks. She likes to clean the leaves and to dig a moat to move snow so it’s not touching the side of her house. Keep in mind she could have put a fence straight down but she chose not to because she needs to be on our property to even fit on the space. Had she fenced all the way down she would have to squeeze through and couldn’t bend down or dig out her moat. Now in the beginning we were considerate of her feelings and that’s why we offered her a key to go and come as she pleased to do what she needs on the side but she said no and started calling everyone on us to try and make our fence project stop. She also has a front yard fence on the other side of her house she completely fenced her neighbor off from the side of his house. He can’t get any work done cause her fence is right up to his side of his house. She only cares about herself and I was too nice to worry about even considering her in the first place. If at any point she wants to acces to clean or do what she needs we would allow her to pass there so idk what she is so mad about we don’t want it. In fact we wanna put a fence straight down our line just to make that point clear. OOP's location on where this is taking place OOP: I am in IL but not Evanston. I’m more in the city. But Evanston is not far from me.   Update: April 10, 2025 (three weeks later) Update: Our fence has been up for a week and a half. The neighbor surprisingly did not bother the workers when they put the panels up. I was so surprised so that’s why I didn’t really do an update because I was like okay.. this is over! Finally she must have come to her senses!! Yeah I was wrong! 😑 On Tuesday I was coming home from picking up my child from school and some man ran out his car and shouted if I was the owner of the home. I asked who he was and he stated he was from the city building and code enforcement while also briefly flashing his I.D at me. I then proceeded to tell him that I am the owner and why was he here. He stated that he received a complaint about a building violation and that our fence is too tall and we must cut it down from 6ft to 5ft (Keep in mind my neighbors fence is taller than ours btw) I told the inspector that 3 licensed contractors that we contacted all informed us we didn’t need a permit, but that if they were wrong we would gladly comply of course and or apply for the needed permit. He stated that there is no possible way the city would approve it. And i told him we will work with the city and find a solution, we don’t wanna cut corners and wanna do it right. My husband then comes out and gets informed on what’s going on and then my husband asks the inspector for his email or business card so we can follow up and work together to fix it. The guy refused to give us any card or email to follow up with him. He told my husband “all the information is on the city website, why do you need my information for?” He was very rude. I know how to talk with people so I told him. “ look I get you come across a lot of people who argue back and give you a hard time so your on guard, but I assure you we don’t wanna argue and we wanna fix this issue” he then calmed down and told us he has kids too and he understand why we need a fence etc… he then told us he would give us 48 hours to get a permit and then he left. Once I got home I reviewed the camera footage and the inspector entered our property and did not ring the door bell to try and speak with us. He just trespassed and was walking around looking at our property. He didn’t measure anything. Nothing! So I began to get suspicious… I then remembered when my neighbor threatened us and the workers saying she had an inspector friend and she was gonna report us. On top of that why didn’t the inspector wanna give me any information to follow up??? So weird. Then he tells me to get a permit in 48 hours? He didn’t even tell me which one! And if he said the city would not approve it why didn’t he tell me to apply In 48 hours…?! Things just seemed off. Idk So then I went to do my research. I contacted my alderman’s office and asked for assistance in applying for a permit. I wanted to make sure we did the right steps. After we apply for our permit I asked the representative if they could look up the complaint for me because the interaction with the inspector seemed suspicious. She agreed and looks up the report. There was a report made 17 days ago by our neighbor (before our fence panels were up) that our fence was not on our property line. The report said nothing about fence height. She also told me there was no inspector assigned to the case and that it was still open pending investigation… so that’s weird… idk maybe he was legit and didn’t update the case but it’s all not adding up. So the alderman agrees this is weird and states that they are going to get someone from downtown involved to speak with my neighbor because she is harassing us and it’s just too much! The report she made was false. Our fence posts are on our property lines we have our plat survey that proves all of this. In addition to all the other things listed in my other Reddit post that she has done. So today I’m just minding my own business like I usually do and I get a notification on my camera. I see someone sticking their hand through my fence pointing at my back and moving down my fence repeatedly doing the same thing. So I go outside and calmly ask the women “ do you have any questions about my fence that I can help you with? I see that you’re sticking your hand through and pointing” she tells me “ I’m your neighbor down the block, I was just speaking with your next door neighbor and she has a problem with your fence” I let her know that the neighbors claims are bogus and that we now have a permit for the height of our fence and I have a survey of our property proving we are on our property line. I told her that the neighbor is crazy and if she has any concerns to please speak with me. As I turn I see my neighbor in her bushes by her door. She was outside the whole time and stopped the neighbor as she was walking her dog to complain about our fence and spread false claims again! Then the neighbor leaves and immediately stands and stares at our house looking at the permit displayed on our front door. This is getting crazy.. and I really didn’t wanna do tit for tat. But I reported her illegal basement apartment. Which is not a false allegation because her zoning does not allow for a basement apartment, she also does not have 2 entrances. I really didn’t wanna do it but she is really pushing me to become a person I don’t wanna be. I want this all to be over already! Praying she can finally understand reality soon. I will update if anything else happens. Does anyone speak polish that can translate an audio file for me? It’s between the neighbor, my husband, and the crazy neighbor. Additional Information from OOP who has received the translation of the audio file OOP: I got the translation!!! Here it is if you’re interested. Women - is my crazy neighbor Man - is her realtor friend she called over to look at my house and complain. It looks like he was trying to actually help us and she was getting mad at him. He was mostly trying to mediate with her allowing us to close the back fence that has always been closed for over 20 years but now that she is mad she is not allowing us to close it because she owns a couple inches of property next to her garage that is unfenced and open to our property so in order to close it off from the alley we need to close it on her few inches of property or else someone can slip through. Easily. She is just using that as leverage ( doesn’t matter to us we can just fence it straight down our property if we have to and she will have awkward fenced in boxes on the side of her house and she can’t get in. Makes no sense she is just using that as leverage cause it’s all she has. That’s the back story on the back lol and below in the transcript WOMAN: it’s mine[…] MAN: yeah but you use this[…] […] M: the rats were running in front of the garage[…] W: he should catch those rats M: okay, today… W: (curses) i’m sorry… the rats were running M: does it bother you? why? W: yes it bothers me and (he?) will destroy it? because he is so mean and (it?) will… M: but he asked you and you agreed W: no, nobody talked to me about it. they just put up the fence [ENGLISH PART] W: (cries) jesus [eng: no no] M: and now what’s bothering you? that it’ll be open or that it’ll be closed? W: what that? M: so if he closes it and puts (something), it’ll be safer for you and for him W: but..but it’s mine M: why does that bother you? W: it bothers me because i’ll have the entrance there(?) M: where? W: from that side M: but from that side you blocked the entrance yourself […] W: i’m going home because it’s too cold… are we going? M: wait a second… W: no, no i don’t want to talk to him. i’ll talk to someone else. i’m going to go to the city hall M: what do you want them to do? to […] put here(?)? W: i’ll to sort this out. i’m not giving up M: to be honest i’ll tell you, i live in a building far from the downtown and i’ve (done something?) to my neighboors too. they have (something near their house?) […] W: but why are you talking to them? you came to see me. M: you know what, i think you could stand your ground but it doesn’t make sense because he- W: yeah i’ll stand my ground and he will do the same. you know what? nobody asks me (for my permission) and do what they want M: he said that he asked (for permission) W: you know what… i’m sane M: but why do you need the entrance to the garage from this side? W: […] they did everything […] nobody asked me… […] it’s mine M: but you should look and see what you did to the neighbors […] (something with the entrance) W: this have been like this since the begining, do you remember? M: but today someone could come to you and tell you (to take down something?) W: then i’ll take it down M: that would satisfy you? W: you know what, i’m going home […] M: if i were you i would let him (to do that thing) W: and i won’t M: […] but it’ll be safer […] and he will put a fence here W: no! M: so you will have- W: no. nobody asked me and i won’t allow it, so… i’m going home, i’m cold M: i’ll go with you soon W: […] you shouldn’t be the one sorting this out [ENGLISH PART] Relevant Comments OOP on the suspicious inspector who stopped by the house with the badge OOP: He had a badge he flashed really quickly but he came in a personal car. He also didn’t ring the door bell. He just came in looked around and then went to sit in his car about to leave until he saw me parking and walking in. In regards to the fence we did look it up, if the fence is 6ft tall it must be 80% see thru. Which ours is. But we went ahead and got the permit anyways. I looked up the permits on my neighbors house as well as her zoning and she is 100% renting an illegal basement. + Yeah people working for the city can be rude in general what really made me suspicious is no contact info? No proper information? No citation? Like how do we follow up? He told us we don’t need a permit for a 5ft fence so we need to cut ours down but then told us to get a permit?? Either he didn’t know what he was doing or maybe in some way he was trying to help us out towards the end. Idk. Is it common practice to not give any info about a violation and no contact info to follow up? Even my alderman said he should have given us his business card and a notice of a violation. We’ll see if he comes back. He also came in a personal car too. + Exactly! That’s why I was so confused. He told us we had to cut our fence down to 5ft because we don’t need a permit for that and then told us to get a permit? Like why are we getting a permit? Especially when he said the city wouldn’t approve it? I left that interaction so confused. OOP on the neighbor kicking up a fuss over the fence OOP: She is mad because she can’t walk through our property to reach the side of her house. Long story stort she closed herself off with her fence. And always just walked on our property around her fence to get to her side. We offered her a key at first just trying to be good neighbors. But now she will have to fix her fence and run it down because she is causing too much trouble over a problem she created by her own fence. + Yes! She is just upset cause she lived here 30 years and somehow that means she can use our property whenever she wants and we were nice enough to not even care. Then we wanna put up a fence to protect our family and property and now we are the bad guys! OOP on drawing a cease and desist letter through her attorney for the neighbor OOP: My husband is already in the works with this. Seems to be the best option at this point. + I agree, thats why we are kinda using it as a last resort. I don’t believe she is rich by any means, and again I don’t wish her harm no matter how annoying she may be. I just need her to understand that we are not doing anything illegal. All her accusations have been proven false and she still keeps accusing us. I feel like it’s a matter of she thinks since she has been here longer she has the say of what goes on… nothing else makes sense. She is full of hatred and it’s disgusting. The other day ( I have this on video) she walked by and spit on my fence post. Like what?! Then today she is sticking her hand through the back yard fence and ripping pieces of our grass out. I have all this on video too. Like the level of hate you need to have for someone to do these petty things is crazy… and we never disrespected her we got along great with her for years. All that changed is we informed her we were building a front fence and she immediately changed. OOP on the illegal basement apartment the neighbor was renting OOP: She rents the basement. We discussed all solutions she refused all. Our contractor offered to give her a quote on the swinging gate for her side but she said NO. She is dead set on us just not having a front fence. It’s sad that there are people out there that are this unreasonable. We are going above and beyond to try and reason with her but she is just being malicious. Today she called over someone who was walking there dog and proceeded to touch our fence and tell them lies again! My husband had to go out and politely just make it clear that we are not taking her property. We don’t engage unless she touches are property and today she did… Again… she keeps acting like we are bothering her and she is some poor old helpless lady whenever we go out to explain and tell people the truth. They shouldn’t also be touching our property. If they were talking by her property I wouldn’t care what they say… but they make it my problem they touch my gate and start sticking their hands through..   ----NEW UPDATE---- Editor's note: the body text for Update #2 was saved before it got removed Update #2: April 29, 2025 (2.5 weeks later) I know it’s been a few weeks since my last update. A few of my neighbors actually found my Reddit post, so to protect the privacy and security of myself and my neighbor I removed my old Reddit posts because there was pictures and videos that i didn’t want getting shared to neighborhood platforms. I mainly made my post to vent and get feedback and didn’t intend on it getting so popular it made it around the world and back to my block lol but I do appreciate the support and advice from everyone! Updates: So a lot has happened in the past 2 weeks. To start the workers came back to paint our fence and weld some mesh on the fence. Our neighbor freaked out and thought the workers welded our fence to her post. She called our mediator (representative from the alderman’s office) she came out to check and immediately saw that we did not connect her fence post to ours. Then our neighbor got mad and started demanding for us to personally show her our fence plans and permits (we had our permit on our door). She got more mad and used a racial slur towards me and my family and keep in mind she said the racial slur about us to the representative of the alderman’s office! So it has been documented. That same day an officer from the city department from Building and code enforcement showed up to our house AGAIN! it was a different guy this time, he told us that there was a report made alleging we were building a whole new garage without a permit! We haven’t changed our garage at all it’s the same as when we bought our home and it’s clear to anyone it was not just built!! The building inspector immediately closed the case. At this point our neighbor is being malicious and is making false reports to harass us. What really worries me is that if we ever wanna sell our home these reports stay on record even though they are false and dismissed. After this we did a FOIA (freedom of information act) for any 311 reports for our address. She made 3 reports to the city DOB ( department of buildings) all made in March and all made before our fence panels were even put up! She alleged we built a new garage, that our fence posts was not on our property line, and that we had installed a side fence without building permit. All false allegations. Keep in mind we had just the posts up March 18 and our panels didn’t get put on till April 5th. We also didn’t build the side fence she is talking about.. yet.. so she did a complaint in advance assuming we have no permit. Can’t even make this stuff up it’s insane! Then she made a false allegation to a police officer and told them my husband was yelling and screaming at her and throwing his hands up intimidating her during a time she was talking to her neighbors, then the said neighbor walks to her car at the same moment her and the cop are talking and my neighbor points telling the cop to go ask the women (our neighbor from across the street). The cop goes over and talks to her and the woman tells the cop my husband didn’t do what was alleged. Then the cop goes back over and tells my neighbor that the witness to the alleged incident says nothing like that happened. I also had the video and audio recording of that conversation. My husband went outside because she involved 3 neighbors at this point calling them over talking about our fence and us. He went outside to talk to the other people and not her. Even his body language in the video was not aggressive and he was not talking to her directly at all. After he told the neighbors what is happening (our side) he left and let them continue talking. Yet she wants to actually lie and try and put him in jail. So glad I have every interaction recorded. Same day she gets very erratic and upset that things didn’t go her way, that she comes outside while I’m outside and starts singing / humming like an opera singer.. she has never did this before and it was just weird. I ignore her as I always do and just let her be. Then she decides to go inside and get her purse to pretend like she is going somewhere and goes across the street intentionally avoiding crossing in front of the neighbor who told the truth to the cops (they were outside on their porch) I assume she is now upset with them because they told the truth. Then she goes and talks to their next door neighbor who was just watering her grass! She proceeds to talk about our fence and us to them! I saw it all plain as day because I was outside. I let it go because I wanna avoid her as I always do but it was so annoying. Then she leaves and liteally 5 min later she comes back in her house. She just went around the block and pretended to leave to just talk to another neighbor about us and just slander us and paint us as bad people. I honestly cannot understand this behavior. Then same day she calls someone over to come look at our backyard… I literally can’t catch a break with her. We arnt doing anything wrong. Our fence is permitted by the city! She is just mad that she can’t walk down our property as she did for 28 years to reach the side of her house that she fenced herself out from and she can fix but she refuses and instead blames us. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Talk to a lawyer but send her a cease and desist letter and if she continues you can report her for harassment and attempt a restraining order or file charges for harassment OOP: We are working with a lawyer now. We tried mediation and APS. And she is not willing to be responsible or seek help. We did the best we could do to try and be understanding and get through to her but at this point it’s very clear she wants no resolution. Instead she prefers to harass us, slander us, and make up false claims to 311 and 911. We have proof of her lies and when she is confronted she still denies it. Even when it’s on video! Can’t reason with someone like that. Commenter 2: CALL. ADULT. PROTECTIVE. SERVICES. She’s not rational. Is there any way she could retaliate that would be worse than this?? She’s not well. OOP: We have and unfortunately they can’t do much. She refused help and would not give any contact information for her loved ones. She will keep escalating because she is upset. She feels we need her permission to do things on our property… she is becoming very bitter. Yesterday my kids used chalk on our sidewalk that is enclosed in our fence and she took her water hose this morning and hose’d the chalk off through her gate onto our property! I don’t want to understand the level of hatred she has grown to have for us it’s honestly so sickening. Privacy Trees Illegally Removed by Neighbor
As the title suggested, when I was not home, my neighbor took down my fence and removed 3 fully grown 20-30' tall trees that were on my side of the fence along our property line. It was sickening and highly illegal - but she and I are now working on a possible resolution, that she would replace these trees with hopefully better ones on her dime. I asked r/arborists for replacement trees suggestions, but someone suggested that I come here to consider an alternative resolution. Some background: I'm in California. Bought my place 3 years ago. The previous owner told me the volunteer trees started growing 15 years ago on my side of the fence, and reached 30' tall. They gave excellent privacy from the neighbor's 2nd floor windows. The trunks of the trees are clearly on my side of the fence, perhaps 1 inch of one stump protruded onto their property line and a branch began leaning onto the fence. None of the other trees were even touching the fence at all. The neighbor basically had the fence removed, gave the tree company the impression that she secured permission from me (I absolutely did not), and they cut everything down in an afternoon. If I do go the legal route, how difficult would it be? What would the legal costs be? What sort of compensation should I be entitled for? Any other things I should know about? I'm trying to see what option would be best for me. Thanks in advance. submitted by /u/AlamedaRaised to r/treelaw [link] [comments]

Privacy Trees Illegally Removed by Neighbor - Suggestions on Replacement?
As the title suggested, when I was not home, my neighbor took down my fence and removed 3 fully grown 20-30' tall trees that were on my side of the fence along our property line. It was sickening and highly illegal - but she and I are now working on a possible resolution, that she would replace these trees with hopefully better ones on her dime. These trees need to be tall enough to block out her 2nd floor that looks into my backyard, and needs to grow on a 6' x 20' strip of land adjacent to my garage and her driveway. This would be in the Oakland, California, suburbs. A few that were suggested: Italian Cypress Podocarpus Pittosporum silver sheen Prunus Caroliniana Compacta Camellia Sasanqua I'm personally leaning towards the Compacta and the Italian Cypress. I was told planting 15-gallon of these varieties can grow to 15-20 feet within 2-4 years. But am open to any suggestions. submitted by /u/AlamedaRaised to r/arborists [link] [comments]

You want me to cut down my trees? No thanks, enjoy the view of the leaves.
Our older neighbor sold his home to a middle-aged couple. Within the first day they managed to piss everyone off (for context-they left a boat trailer in a dangerous spot in the road despite warnings from neighbors and having two driveways and a spot where a trailer could go, left one dog outside all night to bark at every new thing for a month, let their other dog poop on everyone’s front lawns, and let it chase after people in their own yards, etc). After thoroughly pissing everyone off, they decided to ask us to cut down all the trees/bushes along our fence line because the trees were blocking their view. They live at the bottom of a hill. The only view they have is the rest of the hill and other peoples houses. When we told them no, they asked us if we could at least trim the branches down more so they could see through them, and then walked away. We haven’t trimmed a single thing in months. Theres no power lines to worry about in the area either, and everything is within our fence line. We even let the area beside the patio grow up some so they absolutely no view besides leaves. We actually like it better, because it saves us the cost of a privacy fence we were planning to install. Be a dick as soon as you move in and expect people to cater to your needs? Nah. Enjoy nice view of leaves from your back porch. ETA: we have cameras and we were regularly trimming them before they asked us to cut the trees. submitted by /u/tiredofthebs23 to r/pettyrevenge [link] [comments]

Neighbor wants privacy fence on our side of property line
A house that I inherited is about 12 feet from the neighbor's house. It is on a slope and there is a 3.5' rock retaining wall. We think the property line is at the base of this wall. They have a flat 6' pathway along the edge of their house, and we have 4' of pathway marked by a short 2.5' split rail fence, then the 2' of the rock retaining wall. This worked fine with the neighbors for decades. In the rear yard, there is a 5' fence that we built on the property line for a short section, and then we moved it into our property about 3' where this retaining walls starts. However, this only is for the back yard. There is no fence running between the two houses. Fences normally look better when they are on the top of a retaining wall. The new neighbor has a huge landscaping project where they cut down every tree and bush, brought in a bulldozer and graded the whole yard flat, installed a lot of bricks, paved paths, patio area, and a fire pit. Part of the reason it feels much less private is that he cut down three mature trees that blocked the view down the hill. He told us he wants to remove the current 5' fence that has slats that you can see through, and replace it with a 6' privacy fence, and he wants to extend it along the path between the two houses. He says he needs it for privacy and to protect his children against loose dogs or wild animals that could jump down over the retaining wall with the low 2' fence. We think that's weird. But moreover, it seems like it would give us 4 ft of space between the house and this new fence and that would be like a dark corridor. I don't even know if they could somehow destabilize the wall by digging deep holes at the top of the wall. Is there any design idea he could do on the property line at the base of this retaining wall? I do understand he has a problem installing a fence that would be private at the base of a 3' wall submitted by /u/Helisent to r/homeowners [link] [comments]

WIBTA if I built a privacy fence, even though it would ruin the neighbour's view?
Hi folks! First poster, long-time lurker here. This is a bit longer to give some context. Last year we (family and I) bought a beautiful 1.5 acre property. We have a pond and old growth trees, fruit trees, a creek, and lots of birds. It really is a dream-place. Here's the problem(s): (1) we are separated only slightly from a busy road, (2) we had privacy on one side with about 15 ft of brush, however we recently woke up to chainsaws and were told that the man who owns the lot next door was clearing it for development, removing all semblance of privacy (3) We have nosy neighbours on the other side who have been VERY particular about the property line, and us not affecting their property. There has been several small, petty incidences in the short time we've been here. They have a cute fence along the backyard side of the property, which while aesthetically-pleasing provides no privacy or security. They are an older couple who manicure their lawn to perfection, whereas we much prefer the look and feeling of wildflowers, gardens, and natural spaces (nothing out-of-control or ugly). (4) I have been building a large vegetable garden, however several times the neighbours have simply stood in their yard and watched. The man is often shirtless doing so, and I am becoming increasing uncomfortable being in the backyard without looking like I'm completing tasks and well-dressed (no going in the yard in my pj's for me). (5) We have a young golden retriever who, so far, has been restricted to a small dog run in the front yard. He gets very agitated when he can see us in the backyard while he's stuck inside, and I have tried a tie-out for him to join me in the garden but he gets wrapped around trees so often that it's equally frustrating as him whining inside. The anxiety of having to keep up appearances in my own yard is becoming a lot, and I'm constantly worried that my dog will end up on the road, or that he and I will never be able to enjoy the beautiful yard together. SO: this recently sparked a conversation about forking out the money necessary to build a fully secure privacy fence around the property. We are limited to 6 feet in our county, which is enough for us. However, I'm concerned about how the act will come across to the neighbours. Our backyard is lovely, and it actually goes around the back of the neighbour's yard. They get a full surrounding view of our trees, pond, and subsequent pleasantness. If we build our privacy fence, it would render their aesthetic fence useless/odd-looking against another, taller fence. We would almost certainly be reducing the value of their home by removing the feeling of openness and views in their backyard. However, my dog would be free to enjoy the whole property and our yard would feel private and secure. I don't want a forever soured relationship with them, but I'm also at a loss with figuring out another solution to the problems listed above. So reddit, WIBTA for building this fence? submitted by /u/DotNew9484 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

[Fort Thomas, KY] Did a property survey and explained my plans to my neighbor about installing a privacy fence. May be getting into a property line dispute. What are the laws surrounding easements I need to worry about (if any) and what are my rights regarding trees bordering our properties?
I purchased a home in Fort Thomas, KY (located in Campbell County) last year and this summer we plan to install a privacy fence surrounding our property (I checked and privacy fences are permitted by our local laws). The previous owners had a fence, but the rear portion did not extend across the very back of the property and instead stopped some 20-30 feet away. We had a property survey done to determine where the back property line was (since the old fence didn't run along it) and learned that our property extends back farther than we originally thought. The neighbors behind us, who have lived in their home for about six years, were surprised as well, and are now raising concerns about our plans to install the new fence. There are two specific concerns that the neighbor has raised. Our property line sits four feet from their concrete driveway. When discussing the matter with our neighbor he brought up something which he termed "easement to an existing structure" (a term I'd never heard) and claimed that since his driveway is a structure which existed prior to my plan to install this fence, there are laws/ordinances pertaining to the distance any structure I build must be from his existing structure. I couldn't find much online about this term, but it's possible I don't have the right legal vocabulary to search properly. When it comes to property lines, is there an easement I need to be concerned about and, if so, what? I checked my Warranty Deed and it states "The subject property is subject to easements, covenants, conditions, and restrictions of record and/or in existence." How do I determine what these might be? Along the whole back portion of my property, including along the property line, is much foliage. In particular along the property line, there is a lot of overgrown honeysuckle and other smallish trees that kind of form a green privacy barrier of sorts between us. In order to install the new fence, much of this foliage needs to be cleared. My question is about what I am allowed to clear. I've heard that if a tree is on my neighbor's side but branches of it extend over to my side, I am allowed to trim those branches back. Is that true? And what about trees that sit directly on the property line? Who is allowed to do what with them? I really don't want to remove something I'm not legally allowed to and have my neighbor get more upset. When Monday rolls around I plan to engage the local government in some way to learn more, but in the meantime I thought I'd get a head start and see if anyone here knows anything or has had similar experiences. Thank you. EDIT: Thanks to those who have responded. Didn't think lots of people would be interested in a property dispute on a Friday night. I'm going through and responding where necessary now. submitted by /u/Iswitt to r/legaladvice [link] [comments]
