Quote from rick27607 : Looks good on paper; not seeing many reviews around to compare to some others like Anker and Jackery, and Ecoflow etc but willl give it a shot for the price and advertised technology. I ran my full size KitchenAid refrigerator on it for a few mins to test it out, absolutely no issues even when compressor kicking in and out.

How ‘Crimson Desert’ beat the critics and became a global hit
Don't think I've ever seen a Washington Post article about a game release before: >After launching to high sales but tepid reviews, South Korean studio Pearl Abyss has dramatically transformed “Crimson Desert” with nearly weekly updates. >For years, South Korea’s biggest game studios made money in places most American players never look, inside the PC cafe or on the mobile charts. Korean games have been huge, but they’re also, in the global console conversation, mostly invisible. >That changed March 19 when Pearl Abyss released “Crimson Desert,” selling more than 5 million copies since launch, 2 million in the first day and another million by day five. A month in, it’s retaining more players on PC than most multiplayer games. It is easily the fastest-selling South Korean game ever. >South Korea Prime Minister Kim Min-seok posted on X to say the game had “captivated the hearts of users worldwide with a living game world created entirely from start to finish using their own technology.” The game, he said, had “opened a new chapter for K-content.” >A large part of the game’s continued success after that first explosion of sales can be attributed to the near-unprecedented amount of updates and changes made to the game within one month. Since release, “Crimson Desert” has added massive rideable mythical creatures like wolves, bears and boars, new items, new quests, and new ways to move, control and attack. The game received a tepid critical reception at launch, but nearly all of critics’ early complaints about pacing and a confusing interface have been scrubbed out. No wonder the game is retaining more players than the 2022 fantasy classic “Elden Ring” in the same period of time. >Most game studios take months if not years to make similar changes. “Starfield,” published by Microsoft’s Xbox, took three years to make its most recent updates. French publisher Ubisoft routinely takes months to push major updates to its Assassin’s Creed games while charging a substantial fee. Pearl Abyss has achieved more than most within a month, all without charging an additional penny. >Will Powers, the studio’s head of publishing, said the breakneck speed of updates was informed by the company’s experience updating “Black Desert,” Pearl Abyss’s massively multiplayer online game (a genre staple for South Korean gamers). It has shipped a major update almost every Wednesday since 2015. “Crimson Desert” began as a follow-up. Instead, the company eyed the global console market and pivoted the game to focus on a single-player narrative adventure while bringing a “live service” feel to the adventure. >“That is not normal in the industry. That is normal here,” Powers told The Washington Post in an interview. >The post-launch responsiveness has looked, from the outside, like a road map being executed in real time. It mostly wasn’t. >“There was no official communicated roadmap with set-in-stone dates,” the development team told The Post through a written statement, with answers confirmed by co-founder and chairman Kim Dae-il. In contrast to games like “Highguard” — a competitive shooter that promised much in advance but shut down within 45 days — Pearl Abyss has rearranged its plans according to what players have asked for since launch. >“Everything, patch-wise, content-wise, has been iterated in real time based on feedback, based on response,” Powers said. “If you bake in a road map, you’re presuming. We are not baking in presumptions around what the players want,” he added. >That practice traces back to “Black Desert” and its customers who never left. >“There is no ‘Black Desert’ if there are no players, and there is no ‘Crimson Desert’ without ‘Black Desert,’” Powers said. “The DNA of the company is inherent in listening to players.” >The audience has been spoiled. Complaints in forum threads and articles are made outdated within a week. Too little inventory space for stuff you pick up? Pearl Abyss conjured up wardrobe closets, refrigerators and new ways to reformat the game’s “camp” to act as a hub for equipment. Does Kliff, the player protagonist, get too tired too quickly? Give them a few days, and the “stamina meter” is exponentially increased. >Players even discovered a hack to make Kliff zip across the skies with a special stab move in the air, which the team did not intend. Rather than removing the ability, Pearl Abyss made it a little less viable but gave it a fancy animation, letting Kliff twirl through the air gracefully. >“We’re not onerous about, if an idea didn’t come from us, then it can’t be in the game,” Powers said. “I think that’s something that [other companies are] too ego-driven a lot of the time to be able to accept other people’s ideas. It’s almost Silicon Valley-esque. A good idea can come from anywhere.” >Pearl Abyss is a sizable studio in South Korea, but it has a small footprint on the global scale. Kim told The Post in 2022 that he hoped Pearl Abyss could do for games what “Squid Game” and Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” had done for Korean television and film. It’s been an uphill battle in a games industry that’s become more volatile and risky over the years. >While most game studios have platoons of marketing teams across the world, Powers was part of a five-person squad monitoring online feedback. But he said that means less red tape. >“We are an indie publisher with a triple-A quality game,” Powers said. “We can actually have fun and we can do things. We’re more adaptable, we are more malleable. We can pivot faster, versus the AAAs of the world that are restricted by their brand bibles.” >The game took seven and a half years to make, on top of three years to create the company’s internal toolkit, the BlackSpace game engine. >With this much work, is the studio being overworked? South Korea is famous for its brutal work culture. Powers said work hours are normal because the studio is designed for making massive changes in short bursts. If anything, he said, the studio has been preparing itself for a decade to put on what’s essentially a performance that responds to its audience, like a live improv show. >“We needed to ‘yes and’ ourselves,” he said. >The creative engine driving all this, Powers said, is co-founder Kim, who serves as the game’s executive producer and director (and rarely gives interviews). >“He’s very much not the business person. He’s the creative mind behind all the ideas,” he said. “He still is incredibly integrated and active in developing the creative and tech behind it. He works in the weeds every day to make things happen.” >It was Kim, Powers said, who insisted that the game’s Korean cultural undertones be made overt, including its taekwondo-inspired martial arts moves, costuming, food and architecture, all fused into a bright Western fantasy frame. >South Korea’s entertainment industry has spent decades building up its soft power as a global cultural force. With “Crimson Desert,” Pearl Abyss has earned a seat at the table in the games industry as a major player worth watching. For now, players can expect more free updates and expansions as the company slowly shifts toward creating new content and adventures. >“This is just us doing what we do,” Powers said. submitted by /u/TheForbiddenLands to r/CrimsonDesert [link] [comments]

AC company ran lines through room instead of in the ceiling...
UPDATE 3 BELOW I foolishly paid the invoice before asking for photos or inspecting the job because I thought that it was straightforward and there was no way that it could be done so poorly as this. UPDATE: I don't know if I was being cheap when I picked a contractor. I found a nearby highly rated one on Google with 5.0star average and 152 reviews. Initially I thought he had thousands of reviews but I was mistaken. The job was to fix the AC because it wasn't working and I didn't know why. He determined there was a leak in the coil. He replaced that. Then, couldn't draw a vacuum and decided that there was likely a leak in the line set. So he replaced that. Then couldn't pump all the moisture out of the system so he replaced the accumulator as well. All the parts were under warranty except for the line set which was 400. At the end of the day, the total bill was 1000 for refrigerant. 400 for the line set and 2100 in labor. I've talked to other AC companies in the area since yesterday and they all have said that the price is just about reasonable for the Charleston area. I am waiting to see if I hear back from the company that did the work. Hopefully will get a call today. I have another company coming out in a few days to check and see what the work looks like and if they can fix it by running the line set properly. If I can't get ahold of the original company who did the work, I'll likely try to seek help from a lawyer. UPDATE 2: for everybody wondering if I'm the renter or the homeowner, I'm the homeowner. I live about 7 hours away which is why I didn't come and inspect the work immediately and wasn't there for the actual work being performed. I finally managed to make it back down and that's where I became aware of what was actually done. so, the AC company that performed the work is licensed, insured, and bonded. It wasn't a random contractor. but it is definitely somebody who purchased reviews on Google. the issues don't actually stop at how they ran the lines. I had. a real AC company with actual substantial backing come out to quote me on the repair work. he didn't think it would be much because he can just rerun the line set. turns out, he can't rerun the line set, because the line set calls for 7/8 in line and this contractor ordered and installed 3/4-In line. the braised joints are absolutely hilarious looking. on top of that, the new AC company drilled holes and checked the ceiling. It is a straight shot all the way across. plenty of room to run the lines in the ceiling. would have actually been. the easier way is what told me. secondly, there is a one-way f valve that the previous company installed on the 7/8 in line. it's installed in the correct orientation, but unfortunately it's a one-way. this system is a heat pump so it requires a two-way. So in the winter, I would have been calling an AC company because the heat wouldn't have worked. On top of it all, The thermostat line was still left through the foundation so that will likely go bad soon and need another replacement. The quote that the professional company gave me to fix everything was actually cheaper than the job that was performed initially. UPDATE 3: spent some time working with the new AC company on what to say to the previous one. put together a polite but legally spicy email. turns out the company I asked to do the inspection actually has a tech working for them that used to work for the company that performed the initial "work". he left because the owner was " slimy and screwed people over". they've been a voice of reason in this because I'm struggling to maintain my cool. anyways, sent the email and a text saying that I would like a refund to cover cost of doing the job correctly and repairing the drywall along with a quote for the work needing to be redone. after 48 hours of no response from initial company, that email garnered a call within 2 minutes. I didn't pick up and requested that all communication will be via email or text to make sure there are no further " miscommunications". the old company then texted saying that he told me he would be running the lines like this and his employees all witnessed him telling me that on the phone. maybe I'm just forgetful but I don't recall being told that. he then said that he would have come back and fixed it if I asked nice but becUse I'm "being this way he half wants to do it the hard way". so I feel like he is interested in taking it to court. I don't mind that at all. my phone records all my calls so I have actually caught him in a lie here. (my state is a single party consent state) I also have ample evidence that he did multiple things wrong which will very likely threaten his licence if he continues down this route. honestly, all I want is my money back to fix what was done wrong. that's it. I could let it go after that but it feels like he wants to either go to court or is trying to call my bluff. either way, I hope it works out. I really don't want to cripple his business because maybe he was just having a shit day And everything went wrong and he blitzed through the work to get home to a sick kid or something. I don't know his life. I don't want to know. I hope he's doing well, I just want my AC system to be installed with the right parts, In the right places and I want it done by someone I don't have to worry about sabotaging something that will cost me a bunch down the line. submitted by /u/SoothingHoneycomb to r/hvacadvice [link] [comments]

I work as a morgue doctor. Our janitor can stop a family's grief in two minutes, but his price is horrifying.
I am a medical doctor, specifically a forensic pathologist. A few months ago, I landed my first official position at a large county morgue. After years of medical school, residency, and brutal hours, I finally had a steady job with a clear routine. The work is not glamorous, but it is necessary. I examine the deceased, determine the cause of death, and prepare the reports. It is quiet, methodical work, which is exactly what I wanted. The facility itself is located in the basement level of a massive hospital complex. It is a sterile, cold environment, filled with stainless steel tables, bright fluorescent lights, and the constant, heavy smell of chemical cleaners and formaldehyde. There are only three of us who work down here during the day: the senior medical examiner, myself, and the janitor. The senior examiner is a quiet woman who spends most of her time in her office reviewing files. We barely speak unless it is about a specific case. That leaves the janitor. He is an old man. His skin is deeply wrinkled, resembling weathered leather, and his posture is severely hunched. He wears a standard gray maintenance uniform that always looks slightly too large for his thin frame. He moves slowly, dragging a mop bucket down the long, tiled hallways, keeping entirely to himself. He never speaks to me or the senior examiner. He just does his job, cleaning the floors, wiping down the stainless steel tables after we finish our examinations, and emptying the biohazard bins. I thought he was just a quiet, isolated man working a miserable job. But within my first three weeks, I started to notice a pattern. The morgue has a small viewing room. It is a space where families are brought to identify the bodies of their loved ones, or to spend a few final moments with them before they are transported to a funeral home. It is, without a doubt, the heaviest room in the building. As a doctor, you learn to detach yourself from the emotional weight of death, but witnessing the raw, visceral grief of a mother or a husband in that viewing room never gets easier. People react to sudden death in terrible ways. They collapse on the floor. They scream until their vocal cords tear. They hyperventilate. They beg the doctors to tell them there has been a mistake. It is loud, chaotic, and deeply tragic. But I noticed something impossible happening whenever the old janitor was working near the viewing room. The first time I noticed it, we had received the body of a young man who had died in a motorcycle accident. His parents were brought down to the viewing room. Through the heavy wooden door, I could hear the mother sobbing hysterically. Her wails were echoing down the tiled hallway. It was the sound of a person breaking apart completely. I was standing near the reception desk, filling out paperwork, feeling that familiar knot of heavy pity in my stomach. The old janitor walked down the hallway, dragging his mop bucket. He stopped outside the viewing room door. He left his mop leaning against the wall and slowly pushed the door open. He stepped inside. I assumed he was just going in to empty the trash or clean a spill, completely oblivious to the grieving parents. I considered going in to pull him out and tell him to give the family some privacy. But less than thirty seconds after he entered the room, the screaming stopped. It did not taper off into quiet crying. It stopped entirely, as if a switch had been flipped. A minute later, the old janitor walked back out of the room, picked up his mop, and continued down the hall. Shortly after, the parents walked out of the viewing room. I braced myself to see their ruined faces, prepared to offer them water or a chair. But they did not look ruined. The mother’s face was dry. The father was holding her hand. They looked calm. They looked incredibly, deeply peaceful. It was a genuine, relaxed relief. They thanked the receptionist politely and walked out to the elevator. I stood there, completely confused. You do not recover from the sudden death of your child in two minutes. Over the next month, I watched this exact scenario play out dozens of times. A grieving family would arrive, broken and screaming. The janitor would slip into the room. A few moments later, he would leave, and the family would emerge in a state of profound, unnatural peace. I never heard what he said to them. I tried to stand near the door once, straining to listen, but all I could hear was a low, rhythmic whispering. It sounded like he was speaking a language I did not understand, the syllables thick and harsh. Whatever he was doing, it was erasing their grief completely. I asked the senior examiner about it one afternoon. I asked her if she had ever noticed how the janitor interacts with the families. She did not look up from her paperwork. She simply told me that the old man had been working in the morgue long before she started. She told me he had a "gift for comforting the bereaved," and that I should leave him to his business. Her tone was sharp and final, making it clear the conversation was over. But the pattern with the families was not the only strange thing about the janitor. There was also the rule about the night shift. There is a very strict, unwritten rule in our facility. No one is allowed to stay in the morgue past six in the evening. The official explanation is that the hospital cuts the ventilation and power to the non-essential basement sectors to save money, but that is a lie. The power stays on. The real rule is simply that the medical staff must vacate the premises before nightfall. Only the janitor stays. He is the only person authorized to be in the morgue overnight. I learned how strictly this rule was enforced during my second month. We had a backlog of reports due to a large pileup on the highway. I decided to stay late at my desk to finish typing up the autopsy notes. I watched the senior examiner pack her bag at five-thirty. She told me to make sure I left before six. I nodded and kept typing. At exactly six o'clock, the door to my office swung open. The old janitor was standing in the doorway. He was holding his mop. He looked at me, his deep, dark eyes locking onto mine. "It is time for you to go," he said. His voice was incredibly deep. I told him I just needed another hour to finish my reports, and that I would lock up when I was done. He did not argue. He simply stepped fully into my office, walked over to my desk, and reached down to the wall outlet. He pulled the power cord to my computer directly out of the socket. The screen went black, instantly deleting an hour of my unsaved work. I stood up, angry, prepared to yell at him. But when I looked at his face, the anger evaporated. His expression was completely blank, but there was a heavy, dangerous tension in his posture. He looked at me with a cold, predatory focus that made my skin crawl. "The work is done," he said slowly. "You leave now." I packed my bag in silence and walked to the elevator. He stood in the hallway and watched me until the doors closed. That incident planted a deep seed of suspicion in my mind. The unnatural comforting of the families, the rigid isolation at night, the strange behavior of the senior examiner, it all pointed to something deeply wrong happening in the basement of the hospital. I could not let it go. My scientific training demanded an explanation. I needed to know what the old man was doing when the doors were locked. The opportunity to find out came three days ago. We received the body of a young woman in the early afternoon. It was a tragic, sudden medical failure. Her family arrived shortly after. There was a large group of them, parents, siblings, a fiancé. The viewing room was filled with absolute agony. The wailing was so loud it penetrated the thick walls of the examination suites. I watched from the end of the hallway. The janitor, moving with his slow, dragging shuffle, pushed open the door to the viewing room and went inside. Less than a minute later, absolute silence fell over the room. The janitor walked out, picking up his mop. Five minutes later, the large family emerged. They were holding each other, talking softly, wiping away a few lingering tears, but the heavy, crushing despair was entirely gone. They looked relieved. They looked like a heavy physical weight had been lifted from their shoulders. I made my decision right then. I was going to find out what he was whispering, and I was going to find out why he had to be alone with the bodies at night. At five-thirty, I packed my bag just like always. I said goodnight to the senior examiner and walked out to the main hallway toward the elevators. But instead of pressing the button to go up to the lobby, I slipped through the heavy fire door leading to the old supply storage room. The storage room is filled with dusty boxes of outdated medical supplies, broken rolling chairs, and old filing cabinets. It has not been used in years. I squeezed behind a tall metal shelving unit, sat down on the cold floor, and waited. I checked my watch. Six o'clock passed. I heard the distant sound of the heavy main doors locking for the night. The hum of the daytime activity died down entirely, leaving the basement level in profound silence. The cold began to seep through my scrubs, making my joints ache. I listened closely for the sound of the mop bucket, or the heavy dragging footsteps of the janitor. I heard nothing. then, a new sound broke the silence. It was a heavy, mechanical clanking, followed by the squeal of metal hinges. It was coming from the cold storage room. The room where we keep the large, stainless steel refrigeration units that house the bodies before and after examination. I stood up slowly, my legs stiff. I pushed the fire door open just a crack and peered out into the hallway. The main overhead fluorescent lights had been turned off. The only illumination came from the faint, green emergency exit signs mounted above the doors. I slipped out of the storage room and walked silently down the tiled corridor. My heart was beating rapidly against my ribs. I felt a deep, instinctual warning telling me to turn around and find a way out of the building. But the need to know, the terrible curiosity, pushed me forward. I reached the door to the cold storage room. It was slightly ajar. I pressed my back against the wall next to the doorframe and listened. I heard a wet, heavy, tearing sound. It sounded like thick fabric being ripped apart by bare hands, mixed with a sickening, squelching noise. It was followed by a wet, rhythmic smacking sound. Someone was eating. I slowly leaned my head forward and looked through the gap in the door. The cold storage room was illuminated only by the small, internal light of one of the open refrigeration drawers. The drawer had been pulled all the way out. Lying on the metal tray was the body of the young woman who had been brought in that afternoon. Standing over the metal tray was the janitor. His pale, wrinkled back was facing me. He was leaning heavily over the body. Both of his arms were buried deep inside the abdominal cavity of the corpse. My medical training tried to process what I was seeing. He was not using a scalpel, or even using a bone saw or surgical retractors. The woman's chest had not been opened through a standard Y-incision. The old man had simply forced his bare hands directly through the skin, muscle, and ribs. I watched in absolute, paralyzing horror as his shoulders heaved backward. He pulled his hands out of the chest cavity with a wet, sucking pop. Held tightly in his long, blood-soaked fingers was a dark, heavy mass of tissue. It was her liver. The janitor raised the large, dark organ to his face. He opened his mouth. In the dim light, I saw that his jaw seemed to unhinge, dropping lower than humanly possible. His teeth were sharp, jagged, and completely black. He bit deeply into the raw tissue. The sound of his chewing was wet and loud in the quiet, echoing room. He swallowed a large piece whole, his throat bulging unnaturally, and then took another massive bite. I felt a violent wave of nausea hit my stomach. I clamped my hand tightly over my mouth to stop myself from gagging. My brain was screaming in panic. I stepped backward, pulling away from the door frame, desperate to run back down the hallway and find a way out of the basement. I was completely terrified. As I moved my foot backward, my heel caught the edge of a heavy, plastic biohazard bin sitting against the wall. The bin tipped over. It hit the tiled floor with a loud, hollow crash, spilling plastic gloves and empty syringes across the corridor. The sound was deafening in the silence. The wet chewing in the cold room stopped instantly. I froze. I did not breathe. I stared at the open gap in the doorway. A heavy, low growl vibrated out from the cold room. It did not sound human. It sounded like the noise a large predator makes deep in its chest when it is disturbed at a kill. "Who is there?" the deep, scraping voice asked. I did not answer. I turned and ran. I abandoned all caution. I sprinted down the dark hallway, my shoes slipping slightly on the polished tiles. I ran past the reception desk, heading blindly toward the back stairwell that led up to the emergency exit. Behind me, I heard the heavy metal door of the cold room smash violently open, slamming against the concrete wall. Then came the footsteps. They were heavy, incredibly fast, and accompanied by the sound of long fingernails clicking rapidly against the floor tiles. He was moving with terrifying speed. I reached the end of the main corridor and turned sharply into the autopsy suite. I thought I could cut through the examination rooms and reach the service elevator in the back. I pushed through the swinging double doors, plunging into the dark, stainless-steel room. I scrambled behind a large examination table, crouching low to the ground. I held my breath, pressing my back against the cold metal cabinet. The swinging doors burst open behind me. The janitor stepped into the autopsy suite. The dim ambient light from the hallway caught his figure. He was covered in dark blood from his chest to his chin. He was breathing heavily, the air whistling through his jagged teeth. I watched him from under the table. His posture was completely different. He stood tall, his limbs appearing too long for his body. His fingers dragged against the sides of the tables as he walked slowly down the aisle. "You did not leave," he whispered. His voice echoed off the tile walls. "You broke the rule. I told you the work was done." I pressed my hands against my mouth, tears of pure terror stinging my eyes. I was trapped. The only exit to the room was behind him. He walked slowly past the table I was hiding behind. He did not look down. He continued toward the back of the room. I thought I had a chance. If he moved far enough away, I could slip out from under the table and sprint for the swinging doors. I waited until his back was fully turned to me, the sound of his footsteps moving away. I shifted my weight on my knees, preparing to crawl. Suddenly, a massive, blood-soaked hand dropped down from above the table and clamped violently onto my shoulder. I screamed. He ripped me upward, lifting my entire body weight effortlessly with one hand. He threw me across the room. I hit a metal rolling cart, sending stainless steel tools crashing to the floor, and collapsed onto my back. The breath was knocked out of me completely. I looked up, gasping for air. The janitor was standing over me. His face was a mask of cold, predatory anger. His dark eyes were solid black, lacking any white sclera. Blood dripped steadily from his chin onto my medical scrubs. I scrambled backward on the floor, kicking my legs away from him, my back hitting the solid concrete wall. I had nowhere left to run. "Please," I choked out, raising my hands defensively. "Please don't kill me. I won't say anything. I swear." He looked down at me, his jagged black teeth exposed. The heavy, rotting smell of raw meat and old blood washed over me, making my stomach heave. He crouched down, bringing his face inches away from mine. "Do you know what I am, doctor?" he asked. His voice was no longer a growl, but a calm, raspy whisper. I shook my head frantically, completely paralyzed by fear. "I am a ghoul," he stated simply, "I consume the flesh of the dead. It is my nature. It is how I sustain myself." I stared at him, my mind unable to fully accept the impossible reality of the creature crouching in front of me. "I have lived in the dark spaces of humanity for a very long time," he continued, his black eyes unblinking. "For centuries, my kind dug in the dirt, breaking open wooden boxes, hunting in the mud and the rot. It was difficult, dangerous, and humans have always hunted us when they catch us." He reached out and grabbed the collar of my shirt, pulling me slightly closer. "But the world changed," he said. "Humans became organized. You built places like this. Massive, cold rooms where you gather your dead and lay them out on silver platters. You made it easy." "Why..." I stammered, my voice barely a whisper. "Why don't you just kill me?" "Because of the arrangement," he said. "I do not kill the living. Killing draws attention. It brings police, lights, and finally... hunters. I only take from the dead. Specifically, the liver. It is the richest organ, holding the deepest essence of the body. I take the liver, and no one notices. Your senior examiner signs the paperwork, attributes the missing tissue to decay or trauma, and the bodies go to the fire or the earth." The pieces began to click together in my terrified mind. The senior examiner knew. She knew exactly what was happening in the basement at night. That was why she was so strict about the six o'clock rule. She was protecting him, or protecting the hospital from him. "But what about the families?" I asked, desperation pushing the words out of my mouth. "What do you say to them in the viewing room? How do you stop them from crying?" The ghoul smiled. It was a horrific, skin-stretching grimace. "That is the price of the arrangement," he whispered. "A transaction. Grief is a heavy, toxic energy. It poisons the living. When I consume the essence of their dead, I create a void. I whisper the ancient words of transaction, and I pull their grief into that void. I take their pain, I swallow their agony, and I leave them with peace." He leaned back slightly, tilting his head. "I eat their dead," he said softly, "and in exchange, they do not have to suffer the weight of the loss. It is a fair trade. I get my meal, and your hospital gets a reputation for miraculously peaceful grieving processes. The administration ignores the me, the senior doctor turns a blind eye, and I eat in peace." "And now you broke the rule," he said, his voice hardening again. His grip tightened on my collar. " You are a loose thread." "No," I pleaded, tears streaming down my face. "I am not a loose thread. I understand now. I understand the transaction. You need me to process the bodies. You need me to sign the paperwork during the day so you can eat at night. I will help you. Just like the senior doctor." He stared at me for a long, agonizing minute. The dark, black eyes searched my face, looking for deception. I held his gaze, terrified, projecting every ounce of sincerity I could muster into my expression. I was begging for my life. "A new arrangement," he muttered softly. He leaned in close, his cold, wet lips pressing against my ear. "If you ever speak of this to the living world," he whispered, his voice vibrating directly into my skull, "I will not wait for you to end up on a metal tray. I will come to your home, I will tear you open while your heart is still beating, and I will eat you whole. Do you understand?" "Yes," I gasped, nodding frantically. "I understand. I promise." He released my shirt. He stood up slowly, the impossible height returning to his posture. He looked down at me one last time, a look of complete, predatory dominance. "Go home, doctor," he said, turning away. "The work is done." He walked back out the swinging doors, his heavy footsteps fading down the hallway toward the cold room to finish his meal. I lay on the floor of the autopsy suite for a long time. My entire body was shaking uncontrollably. When I finally found the strength to stand, I stumbled out of the room, ran up the back stairwell, and burst out into the cold night air of the parking lot. I have not been back to the hospital since. I called in sick for the last three days. But I know I have to go back tomorrow. I know that if I quit, if I run away, he will think I am going to break the arrangement. He will think I am a loose thread. I am writing this here because I need someone in the world to know the truth. I need this terrible secret to exist somewhere outside of my own head, because the weight of it is crushing me. I am a doctor. I took an oath to protect the living. And to do that, to survive, I have to feed the dead to a monster. Tomorrow morning, I will put on my scrubs, I will walk into the morgue, and I will nod to the old janitor with the mop. I will do what is necessary to survive, so, I will never, ever stay past six o'clock again. submitted by /u/gamalfrank to r/stories [link] [comments]

Quality of Midea fridge/freezer
It is time for a new fridge. My top priority is reliability. How are the Midea options that they have now? I know the Samsung ones from a few years ago were awful. Did the brand change improve matters? We want an ice-maker but are willing to forgo the dispenser to limit the moving parts that might fail in the next decade. submitted by /u/BroadLocksmith4932 to r/Costco [link] [comments]

[NEW] Limited 2025 Refrigerated Heat-and-Eat Side Dish - Trader Joe's Vanilla Bean Whipped Sweet Potatoes - $5.99 [available for a limited time] - I know it’s been in stores for a few weeks now but I haven’t seen any dedicated posts about it yet, any reviews?
Description from traderjoes.com: Nothing gets us whipped up into a frenzy like a side dish that combines the best aspects of savory and sweet. So, you can imagine how excited we are to introduce Trader Joe’s Vanilla Bean Whipped Sweet Potatoes to our refrigerators. This hearty, heat-and-eat dish starts with a base of Sweet Potatoes and heavy cream, Whipped to a phenomenally fluffy consistency, which our supplier seasons with sea salt and nutmeg, and sweetens with brown sugar and both Vanilla Bean paste and bits of Vanilla Bean seeds. When you take it home, it’s just a matter of minutes in the microwave (or slightly longer in the conventional oven) before it’s ready to serve. Salty, sweet, and with a sumptuous, cloud-like texture, we love the depth of flavor it adds to any meal, be it as part of a holiday grazing board or a more mundane weekday dinner. Just be sure to pick up a package before too late, because it’ll only be around ‘til the end of the year. https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/vanilla-bean-whipped-sweet-potatoes-082044 submitted by /u/CookieButterLovers to r/traderjoes [link] [comments]

Are there no decent refrigerators left in this cruel world?
Yes I’m being dramatic…but also I’m so lost on what refrigerator to purchase! Obviously everything will have some bad reviews. TLDR: We have 2 refrigerators. Our main fridge broke recently. The other one is very basic bottom of the line, pretty small, works but we need filtered water and an ice maker. Need help or advice finding a new one! This is the situation: We’ve had our French door, water dispenser on the outside, whirlpool fridge for about 5.5 years. Now it won’t stop beeping and whatever the issue, I hear they only last 5-7 years anyways. Thankfully we have a backup fridge that is basic and usually holds drinks. Right now it’s holding everything and hanging in there. We want to buy a new fridge that has a water dispenser and an ice maker. My dream fridge would be the GE cafe or Bosch 800 series. Those sadly are out of budget right now. My lowest that I kind of liked was two Hisense fridge that are ~$1500. That’s a better price point, but I keep seeing nightmare customer service stories and someone’s whole door fell off. The in between I liked was the GE profile, but saw a couple reviews of the pitcher leaking or overflowing. I really liked this one but it’s about $2600 and I’d really like to be under that. My worry is if I go with the cheaper, it might be “you get what you pay for” situation. Does anyone have any advice or actually own the fridges in the pictures?? I’d love to hear your experiences with whichever fridge you have (the good, the bad, the ugly). TIA!! submitted by /u/Royal-Researcher2535 to r/Appliances [link] [comments]

An ACTUAL Ice/Poison Type Concept
Spotted the awful AI image on this recent Meme Review and decided I'd take it into my own hands to remedy this. So, here's an actual Ice/Poison 'mon drawn by human hands to throw into the mix. Initially sketched by yours truly, and I commissioned https://twitter.com/sunshineart_mon to give it a final rendition. Names are Chemicold, Flaskbite, and Germifroze for those interested, based on scientific flasks, refrigerated liquids, and germs/diseases. They're a line from my own little Fakemon project that I've been working on for two years now. submitted by /u/Peep_Plant to r/MandJTV [link] [comments]

This is my wedding cake which apparently became lopsided and collapsed before I got to see it. Any idea as to why?
I am NOT the Original Poster. That is Cool-Storm9367. She posted in r/Baking Do NOT comment on Original Posts. Latest update is 7 days old. Mood Spoiler: frustrating for OOP Original Post: April 22, 2025 Title: This is my wedding cake which apparently became lopsided and collapsed before I got to see it. Any idea as to why? Hi! This was my wedding cake standing in my reception area freshly delivered & placed before our wedding started. Our florist took this photo. At some point before reception began, I was told it unfortunately sunk in and collapsed. The picture shows it delivered intact and even standing at our wedding venue. But my aunt who bakes cakes for a hobby and says the top tier looks to already begun sinking. I guess I can’t tell if this was the bakers fault or the venue’s handling. Any idea of why this could’ve happened? We spent a lot of money for it and feel saddened. Image: OOP's wedding cake (before collapsing) Some of OOP's Comments: Oodlesoffun321: Just wondering who told you it collapsed and did you see it for yourself? Who assembled it? How hot or sunny was the area it was kept in? That might give you some insight as to whether it had proper supports, proper temp control, etc I'm sorry about your cake and congratulations on your wedding! OOP: I never saw the actual “complete” cake and we didn’t see how it collapse. I got this photo from my florist before she left (which was right before ceremony started). My planner told us it collapsed. The whole day was such a blur but I believe she let us know right before we were scheduled to cut the cake. Our planner took us aside and said she had to do some life saving measures to the cake because it started to become lopsided and ultimately collapsed after delivery. She said she immediately called the baker to explain this and the baker said this has never happened to any of her wedding cake she made before. My planner tried her best to fix the situation so we could still have a cake cutting moment but she put the top tier of our cake on top of another extra 8” basic non-decorative cake we ordered for additional guest servings which was a different color and it still was lopsided. My husband and I were shocked to see the cake that we cut vs what it actually looked like before it collapsed. It was a warm day (79F) but cloudy and not humid. LostInIndigo: Yeah you can see it’s already sagging to one side a bit. Was it kept cool during transport? What kind of structure did it have inside to support it? OOP: So I called my baker. I do not bake so excuse my lack of recall. She said it had 4 dowels for each tier, and then it had a board of some sort in between each cake plus an additional support below. She said the strong structural integrity was certainly there and it was made the day before and cooled before/during transport. It was intact when she delivered it and placed on the table. She said she delivered it and it was perfect. She is incredibly apologetic but is 100% convinced someone bumped into it and ruined the integrity. She credited her decade of experience, that this has never happened before, even for her summer wedding cakes in tented receptions. The weather was 79F, cloudy and no humidity. She is blaming the venue and thinks information is being withheld. To me, who doesn’t bake, the photo does seem to look like it is leaning. I guess Im looking for some return because it was $1000 cake and it didn’t even last 3 hours but she was so confident it was bumped into. She drove it 30 minutes to my venue though so it must’ve been a very significant bump…. a_simple_girl: Did the baker confirm the call from the wedding planner when she noticed the cake was collapsing? OOP: Yes she did. She said my planner called her after she left on the day of the wedding and even discussed with her the day after. My husband & I are a bit annoyed that the baker didn’t reach out to us to apologize after establishing a business relationship 20+ emails deep. I called myself today and I said “I’m sure you heard what happened” and while she is apologetic she is convinced it’s the venue’s mishandling. I-haveit-together: So the cake was sitting outside for hours? Before the ceremony started? I haven’t seen you answer that yet jw OOP: Yes it was outside essentially. Inside a tented reception but because it was warm & pleasant outside the pavilion walls were open. When I called, the baker was upset because my planner (who is affiliated with my venue) called the day after to discuss the unfortunate situation and said “Yes it can get quite warm inside the tent” and my baker said that should’ve been their responsibility then to know how to handle a wedding cake in a tent that tends to get warm. But at the same time the baker said “I’ve made wedding cakes for summer weddings in tented receptions and this never happened” so she has experience in tented receptions to know this herself so I don’t know :/ I don’t think anyone wants to take accountability to help the client feel better lol. Update Post: May 21, 2025 (almost 1 month later) Title: Update on my wedding cake that fell before I ever got to see it. Hey everyone! So last month I posted about my wedding cake my husband & I never got to see as it didn't even survive into reception shortly after it was delivered. When I first posted, the only photo I had was from my florist who just happened to take a photo of it before leaving. I had very limited information at the time of the post so I just wanted to provide an update as I have now talked to both baker/venue, received more photos, and overall got a better sense of the situation. I got a lot of helpful replies, a lot of questions, and a lot of feedback whether it was baker or venue (or both) mishandling. The photo I attached is what my photographer took during cocktail hour (~5PM). The 2nd photo is what my baker took right after she set the cake up in the tent before leaving (~3PM). Here's everything I know based on all the questions. My wedding reception was in a tent with walls open. It was a warm 79F day. The baker delivered the cake around 2:45-3PM PM an hour before ceremony (reception started at 6:00 PM and cake cutting was 9:00 PM). It was a 3-tiered cake with raspberry jelly filling inside. Upon receiving the cake, the venue & coordinator asked the baker about storage & handling and guided her to the refrigerator. The baker said refrigeration is not necessary and was adamant ("based on my 10 years of expertise" per her words) that it is okay to be left out until cake cutting. She set up the cake in the tent herself, took a photo and left (2nd image). After the baker left the premises, some time afterwards, the cake started to tilt. The coordinator immediately called and FaceTimed the baker to show her what's going on to determine a solution. The baker replied "this has never happened" to her cakes before, but said they can try to refrigerate it then. The cake was moved to the refrigerator. When it was later checked on it unfortunately fell apart, and it was "very wet" with "a lot of jam filling" per the venue. I gave the baker a call a few days after the wedding. The whole call was really just her fixated that someone bumped into it and is withholding information because "there's just no way" the structural integrity was not there. She put a lot of dowels including a center dowel rod and this has never happened to her cakes in her 10 years of experience including when she did summer wedding cakes in tents. Overall, while she was apologetic, she blamed the venue/florist/or whoever was near it for bumping into it. I got closure from my venue as well who was...well...shocked by her response in blaming them and they are adamant nobody bumped into it. They offered refrigeration upon receiving the cake and the baker did agree with the venue's report that she said it was not necessary for her cake. Overall it was such a crappy situation and I am bummed we never got our cake cutting moment (plus a $1000 cake that we planned for 6 months and never physically saw). I do feel like heat was the issue especially with the jelly filling making it more prone to heat insensitivities because even when I had the sheet cakes out the next day to serve at brunch, the frosting melted just at room temperature and it got really soft. In hindsight, I wish we would've done two things. One…schedule delivery way later. And two, just refrigerated it immediately. I understand my venue listening to the expert and her adamance saying "refrigeration is not necessary" when offered, but I wish it was ignored lol. Per the Bakery contract, once the cake was delivered and she left, it is not her responsibility anymore. She was apologetic and offered our $100 deposit back, and we declined. We are just ready to move on! Honestly when I saw my cake that my photographer took it gave me a good laugh. You just gotta laugh at this point lol. Image 1: falling cake Image 2: Original, upright cake Some of OOP's Comments: katbreadstick: Apologies, I’m not from that side of the globe, but is a $1,000 considered standard pricing for wedding cakes? I do think your cake looks lovely and elegant, though. Sorry that you never got to taste it. OOP: I know everyone is shocked at the cost….Trust me, I was too…well with everything wedding related. I just chalked it up to “wedding tax”. The sheet cakes were included + delivery. If anyone is wondering, this was my cake inspiration that I was hoping she would replicate, which I found on Pinterest. I didn’t write in my original post but I did post a poor review and that’s when she was more apologetic and offered our $100 deposit back. Aside from that, when I first called, she was quite adamant someone bumped into it and wiped her hands clean in terms of taking no accountability. :/ Candy_Venom: I dont understand why the bakery scheduler didn't ask when your cake cutting was and suggest delivery later? I remember when scheduling ours, the woman specifically asked if there was a refrigerator at the restaurant for the cake or not, because if not, someone would deliver it later in the day. I had to call the restaurant we were having the dinner at to ask if our little cake would fit. they kept it in the fridge for us until dinner was schedule to start and we arrived. and honestly, I cannot believe that cake cost you $1k. I see a ton of mistakes on it. i know it can't be 100% perfect, but the piping at the top of the tiers is...messy and uneven. :-/ OOP: I was part of every email and my venue coordinator sent her a spreadsheet of our timeline including reception time & cake cutting time encouraging questions for timing/logistics. Our baker replied she will be there at 2:45PM, take about 30 min, and leave before guests arrive at 4PM. And yeah my venue had a big refrigerator for the cake but the baker declined it :/ I truly don’t know why. I posted another comment right before this what my inspiration photo was. thistoowasagift: As a former baker of wedding cakes: not only would I have been MORTIFIED, I would have refunded your entire payment and still made you an anniversary cake for free. (Not to mention, I obviously would have told you to refrigerate the cake, and I wouldn’t have delivered a cake with cracks in the icing as are clearly evident in her “promo“ pic.) You were conned and I’m angry even if you aren’t. OOP: Oh I was angry! But it’s just been a month already and my feelings are not raw anymore. After talking to her and hearing how prideful and confident she was on the phone, I knew we wouldn’t be offered any compensation for it. I left a bad review and I expressed I was angry she never reached out to me afterwards even just to apologize…I had to call her myself days later. She was only apologetic after reading my poor review and only for the fact that she never reached out first…that’s why she offered our $100 deposit back (stating she “wasn’t in the right headspace”). My husband & I are both upset but overall just want to move on and not dwell on this. That’s why I just laughed at the cake picture my photographer recently sent us because…yup…that’s our fucked up funny looking cake lol. I felt like that’s all I can do now. To a longer comment: Hi, sorry. I have over 500 comments and a lot of notifications so it’s hard for me to reply. The baker was sent a clear timeline of the day a few days prior via email. She knew reception started at 6PM. She knew cake cutting was at 9PM. The coordinator asked her to please reply to timeline email with questions on logistics and timing and the baker replied she would deliver the cake around 2:30-3:00PM based on that email. I don’t know anything about baking. Before a month ago I didn’t know tiered cakes were sensitive to heat. I didn’t even know what a “dowel” was. I had no idea jelly filled cakes are even more prone to collapsing/heat insensitivities for me to be proactive enough to “warn” my venue. That’s not on me…that’s on the professional with “decade of experience” The “cracks” are not noticeable walking by the cake and only when you zoom into the photos you can see what comments (presumably from those experienced in baking) are saying. The venue shouldn’t take a magnifying glass and scope the cake that the professional baker just delivered and personally set up herself. Once they saw an obvious lean, they called & FaceTime with the baker immediately. Sorry for leaving out the important detail about the timeline. The baker absolutely was aware of our timeline. submitted by /u/LucyAriaRose to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

AITAH for punching my stepdaughter after she played a prank on me that scared me? (New Update)
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/prankuser2046 AITAH for punching my stepdaughter after she played a prank on me that scared me? Originally posted to r/AITAH Thanks to u/soayherder & u/queenlegolas for suggesting this BoRU BoRU 1 TRIGGER WARNING: physical violence towards a minor, emotional abuse MOOD SPOILER: sad but relieved Original Post July 20, 2024 I know the title sounds bad but please read and throwaway, plus fake names. I (38M) married "Judd" (44F) a few years ago and I acquired a step daughter, "Abi"(14F) as a result. I dated Judd when Abi was 8, meet her when she was 9, and married Judd when she was 10. I'd say our relationship is ok, she doesn't act bratty towards me and respects me enough as her mom's husband. However there is one glaring issue about her and that is her pranking nature. Abi loves to pull pranks. Some examples are her hiding my car keys with what looked liked 100 dubs in a box. I found them quickly because she failed to notice my keys have duct tape on them. Another one is when she hid in the fridge (something I still find very weird) to scare the first person who opened it. Well last Wednesday, I arrived home and it seemed that I was the only one there. Only my shoes were at the doorstep and I even called out Judd's and Abi's names with no answer. This is somewhat normal as Judd sometimes works late and Abi stays at school for extracurriculars. So I screwed around with my dog ( a German shepherd and husky mix for anyone that will ask) for a bit and then I decided to relive my myself. When I got to the bathroom I noticed that the window cabinet was open. I though nothing of it at first and unzipped my pants but then I saw a shadow behind the shower curtains. I though the worst and immediately punched the figure behind the curtains. Well as everyone may have guessed it from the title, it was Abi. She was making a prank video and I had not noticed that she propped her phone up on the bathroom cabinet with two cups. I'm not gonna lie, I did not hold back. I punched her as hard as I could. Her nose looked broken and when I realized it, I flipped out and so did she. After maybe 5 minutes of freaking out I drove her to urgent care and informed Judd of the situation. Her nose was indeed broken and would need about 6-12 weeks of recovery. Abi won't talk to me and as for Judd, she thinks that my action may have been justified but also thinks I should have approached with more caution which she has refused to elaborate on. So AITAH? Update July 31, 2024. (11 days later) Well this blew up big time. Let's address a few things. Abi's pranking nature isn't just situated on me, she has pulled pranks on her friends, the neighbors and at school. The school has called Judd several times about this as they have resulted in mild vandalism. The refrigerator prank: she was 11 when that happened not a grown teenager. It was a brand new and very large fridge that my uncle bought and showed it off to every one. So she climbed in until he opened it again. Judd yelled at her saying that she could have suffocated in there and took her outside to scold her for a few hours. The video it self: The video doesn't show the toilet at all just the shower curtain, however the issue still remains that this was a massive invasion of privacy. The video has been deleted and Abi has admitted it was purely her fault. The update: Its been a chaotic week, Judd still refused to elaborate on how the situation should have been handled. I showed the post as a result and she did a 180 turn. She suddenly thought it may be time to stage an intervention and I agreed. We brought some of her friends as well as my cousin's wife, Jess. Jess is an officer from another state and Abi seems to respect her. In this intervention we state how we were each affected by her various pranks and how in turn they affected her. Jess also spoke about how much of these pranks border on criminal territory, meaning she could be arrested or face "retaliation". It seemed to have gotten to her and Abi cried a bit and promised to do better. When everybody else left, Jess stayed behind and brought to our attention about a disciplinary camp that we could send her to. The program is 6 weeks long and involves group therapy, individual therapy and constructive projects (whatever that means), and is held at a University campus. The program apparently has good reviews. Judd seems dead set in sending her to figure out her core problems. I'm a little hesitant about sending a kid away from home but I'm the step parent so I got no say. Edit/Update: Ok I swear Judd must be following my posts because now she's taking back what she said and is now thinking about doing what I and you fellow Redditors suggested in the first place, weekly therapy. So we agreed that I'm gonna find a therapist and I'm gonna front the bill for it since she didn't take this seriously in the first place. RELEVANT COMMENTS K_A_irony Sent away seems extreme. Have you looked into this program? Is it held at a religious college? She might just end up abused at some of these type of teen rehabilitation camps and also just exposed to kids that are worse. I realize it might not be your call but I would suggest try local therapy first WAY before sending a kid off. OOP And I agree, sending a kid away from home will probably just damage them more. But Judd seems intent on dishing out the harshest punishment immediately thinking that this will nip it at the bud. Or she doesn't want to be seen as an enabler. She changed opinions real fast when I showed her the original post. OOP on why he chose physical violence Well I though she was a junkie who invaded my home but ok. I'll be more cautious next time. Enlighten me, what steps should I take next time. ~ carolinecrane Wait, why do you have to pay for her kid's therapy when she didn't take her behavior seriously? That doesn't make any sense. OOP Because she "doesn't know how to find therapists". She just wants to send Abi away, beaglemama Hasn't she ever heard of Google? Sounds like weaponized incompetence. OOP The program is free, Jess said that she could enroll Abi in for free, that most definitely played a part in Judd wanting to send her there. NEW UPDATE * Final Update Feb 17, 2025 Well its been 7ish months and there have been a few developments. Lets address some more things before getting there. Up until recently I have been still getting DMs asking why is "this brat" still in my house, why am I friends with Jess and why did I name my wife "Judd" in my posts. I was drinking when I made my first post, I saved a draft and went back to it after a few hours of sobering up fixing a bunch of grammatical mistakes but clearing some got overlooked and it just stuck. I was planning on calling her "Judy". Jess and I are not friends, she married to my cousin who I do have a good relationship with as well as their two daughters and Jess's daughter. Jess has a serious problem with boundaries. As for why Abi was still living with me, you have to understand, I her stepfather, broke Abi's, my stepdaughter's, nose. If word got out it would look really bad, I would be seen as an abuser and may have even been arrested. Several comments have pointed this out how I should have saved that video for my own safety. I was pretty much going insane at that point and my wife thought nothing of it, thinking I should have just let this go until I showed her my original post. To be honest I wanted to keep the intervention that we had smaller that didn't involve her friends because I felt they did not need to know about it. I just wanted her grand parents and Jess to show up but I was convinced otherwise. Update(s) We decided that we would send Abi to weekly therapy. We were under the agreement that I would find and pay for it and if it worked my wife would pay me back. It did work. Abi improved by a lot, she has realized how much damage she has done and working to improve things. She has even begun to do volunteer work as well which I didn't think she would do. She as apologized profusely realizing how disgusting her "prank" was. She has also deleted her Tiktok account calming that's where she got all the ideas from. We decided we would get her a new smart phone for her birthday three months ago for the improvement she's shown (we took away all smart devices as punishment, I don't think I mentioned that before). As for me and my wife, I gave her an ultimatum, since therapy worked for Abi, it would be time we go to couples therapy or else we separate. We were having problems before this whole incident showed up and now it kinda has to be forced. Past two years we've been living more like roommates and her enabling behavior is finally causing things to fall part. She reluctantly agreed. It ended up being short lived. She spoke during our sessions how I take things out of proportion and I went too far posting the incident online. She revealed that she was indeed following my posts and that's why she changed her mind about the camp. Our therapist then asked us both if we loved each other at all. I was honest and said yes but its becoming difficult. My wife on the other hand said she was in love with the idea of me. I needed a minute if I heard that right and she went on how I was apparently a catch. I was younger than her, had a stable job and owned a house and she thought my loyalty was a bonus. I don't why but I asked her if she cheated on me and she said no. But it doesn't matter, she just revealed that she settle for me. I filed for divorce 2 months ago. We had a prenup so things are going smoothly other than her erroneously claiming some jewelry is hers but my lawyer seems to think that it should finalized within 1-2 months. So my STBEX has moved out along with Abi. My dog misses them, she just sits by the door waiting for hours for them to come back. STBEX is not happy about how things have progressed, she has been calling me a spineless bastard who couldn't just tolerate how things are and has been saying to everyone who will listen. But behind closed doors she's been blaming Abi for her divorce claiming it was her behavior that caused it. I know this because she has called me and texted me semi regularly. Abi is living with her grandparents because apparently her mother can't deal with her right now. I actually liked my in laws, they were real good people and they've apologized for their daughter's actions and even offered to reimburse me for Abi therapy sessions. They told me that they were gonna take care of Abi because it seems her mother has finally lost it. I spoke with Abi and assured her that this wasn't her fault, chances are we were gonna divorce regardless. She then told me that she didn't want me to leave and that I was the closest thing to father she ever had. This surprised me, I never really saw myself as a parental figure for Abi, I only really did the minimal. Outside of that I just paid for school events, supplies and would carve out sometime for her but I did leave it up to her if she wanted to spend time with me. I told her that maybe when she turns 18 we can pick up where we left off but until then I don't think we can see each other. Her mother would definitely try to keep her away from me and to be honest I need sometime away from Abi as well. Things are so quiet at home that its relaxing. So there you go, I don't even care if my STBEX finds this post. TLDR: Sent Abi to therapy, it worked but now me and her mother are divorcing and things are just falling apart. Yes, Climate Change Is Probably Going To Kill You
https://predicament.substack.com/p/what-most-people-dont-understand A lot of people do not seem to understand the implications of climate change. The majority of people do not deny that climate change is happening (well, at least outside of the United States), and most of them also understand that it’s us causing it through emissions of greenhouse gases and land-use change. But they still don’t understand that they will probably die from it. Here are the most likely ways you could die because of climate change: Food shortages Lack of fresh water Disease Mass migration Heat stress Conflicts from all of the above We have already left the Holocene, a 12,000-year period providing us with predictable temperatures and rainfall patterns, enabling agriculture, overpopulation and our current out-of-control ecocidal civilization. Look at this 10,000 year chart of CO₂ concentration: Now look at this 12 000 year population chart: Our ability to cultivate crops (grow food) at a global scale and grow our population to this point, was made possible by this stable climate (soon to be gone), fossil fuel energy, relentless resource exploitation, and our illusion of mastery over nature. When we started burning fossil fuels at large scale, our population exploded and so did the CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere, because our current civilization is built on fossil fuels. The Holocene is now over. We crossed the limits a long time ago and now the reckoning has arrived. There is no going back, not even if you buy an EV and some solar panels. Sorry. We were warned, but we didn’t listen. The media and scientists often speak of first-order impacts, such as the melting of ice sheets and rising sea levels, rising temperatures leading to heat waves and droughts, increased and stronger natural disasters, and so on. I suppose they don’t want to cause too much panic, or maybe they are just in denial of reality. Most people hear that and think: Sea levels rising by 1-2 meters by 2100? No problem, I can just move. Temperatures rising by 3°C globally? No problem, I live in a cold country and if it gets very hot I will turn on the air-conditioning. Another natural disaster? These things happen. We will rebuild. Loss of biodiversity? Sad, but who cares, doesn’t impact me. I am above nature and my food comes from the supermarket. What they fail to understand, among many things, are the second and third order impacts from climate change disruption. Most people are 100% dependent on governments, society and global supply chains working the way they are today. Food in the supermarket. Gas at the gas station. Water on tap. Electrical grid powering critical infrastructure and households. Well guess what, climate change is about to disrupt all of that. Sure, many of us will die from the first-order impacts directly, but most of us will die from the second or third-order impacts that will ripple through economies and societies, and it has already started. The Science and Magnitude of Climate Change Looking at the 400,000 year historical chart below, you will recognize that CO₂ concentration, global temperature and sea level have a positive correlation (they rise and fall together), and you can identify a pattern that repeats every 100,000 years or so. You may also notice that CO₂ concentration of 100 ppm has translated to around 5°C temperature change and a significant change in sea level. The causes of these natural patterns are from variations in the orbital eccentricity (100,000 year cycle), axial tilt (41,000 year cycle), and axial precession (26,000 year cycle). You can read more about these cycles here on NASA’s website. What has been going on in the past two centuries? Since 1800 atmospheric CO₂ concentration has risen from 280 ppm to 424 ppm, increasing by 144 ppm. Why? Because we have released approximately 1700 gigatons of CO₂ into the atmosphere, 1400 gigatons from fossil fuel combustion and 300 gigatons from deforestation and land-use change. But how do we know CO₂ causes temperature rise?! CO₂ and other GHG’s trap heat in the atmosphere, increasing global temperatures. This is very basic physics. Just have a look below. No debate to be had. Only an idiot would think otherwise. But how do we know it’s us?! Burning one kg of oil (gasoline, diesel, kerosene, it doesn’t matter) releases 3.1 kg of CO₂. You may be thinking, how can 1 kg of something release 3.1 kg of something? It’s because each carbon atom in the fuel combines with two oxygen atoms from the air, increasing the mass. The same applies to coal and natural gas. Burning 1 kg of coal releases 2.6 kg of CO₂. Burning 1 kg of natural gas releases 2.75 kg of CO₂. This is also very basic science. But CO₂ is plant food?! To put the recent rise in CO₂ ppm into perspective: the shift in CO₂ concentration between the last ice age and the Holocene was 100 ppm, and this change, driven by natural processes, happened over a 10,000 year period. This slow pace of change allowed animals, plants, and ecosystems to gradually adapt and migrate. But now, the rise in CO₂ is happening so rapidly, it’s as if an asteroid struck the planet. Forests are dying and burning, species are going extinct. They are not thriving in this climate. Nature doesn’t have the luxury of time to adjust to this kind of change, making it practically impossible for ecosystems and species to survive (including us). Unfortunately we are not stopping at 424 ppm, CO₂ concentration is increasing faster than ever before. Here is the keeling curve since records began: Here is an 800 000 year chart: We've clearly moved beyond the natural cycles of CO₂ variation and are now in uncharted territory. What we have done is absolutely insane. Even in the best-case scenarios we’re projected to peak at around 550 ppm%20by%202100.). That would lock in a climate shift equivalent to two ice ages, in the opposite direction, at a pace the Earth hasn’t experienced since the Permian Extinction event 250 million years ago. The last time we were at 550 ppm is estimated to have been at least 3 to 4 million years ago. Needless to say, the world was a very different place back then. Most people, including me, do not have a mental image of what this looks like, making it difficult to truly process what it means for life on earth. So let’s imagine the reverse, an ice age, which we an understanding of what it looked like. Imagine if we knew for a fact that in 75 years from now, in the year 2100, most of Canada, Northern United States, Northern Europe and the British Isles will be covered in a 1 km thick ice sheet. Governments, businesses, and people living in Toronto, New York, Chicago, London, Stockholm, would probably be in full panic mode, planning a move further south, causing real estate values to plummet and economic chaos when major cities are slowly being abandoned. Who am I kidding, most people would probably be denying it or counting on some tech-solution, because that is exactly what is happening today. Green growth! The good news is that an ice age is not going to happen any time soon. The bad news is that what is going to happen, and it really is going to happen, is the opposite of an ice age, and it’s going to be twice as powerful (in the best case scenario) and 100 times faster. This rapid climate shift is happening on a planet already in trouble from ecological degradation, with most of its natural defenses gone. Original forest cover gone, most species practically at the cusp of extinction, oceans and ecosystems destroyed from chemicals, plastics and pollutants. But we are probably not stopping at 550 ppm either. There are tipping points that could push us much further. The Tipping Points I hear a lot of talk from climate scientists about “if we pass this tipping point then this or that”. I’m not a climate scientist, but it seems rather obvious to me when reading the peer-reviewed scientific papers being published, that a lot of the tipping points have already been triggered and we are unlikely to stop them, at best, we can slow them down. Ice Melt and Albedo Effect - Tipping point 1.5–2°C As temperatures rise (and they are rising 4 times faster in the arctic) the ice melts, and the surface changes from white (ice) to dark (ocean/land). White surfaces reflect 80-90% of solar radiation, and dark surfaces reflect only 10-20%, absorbing more heat. This is an amplifying (positive) feedback loop, and this process started decades ago. More heat, less ice. This means global temperatures will continue to increase even if we were to stop emissions today (we wont). Melting ice also causes sea-level rise, and sure, it’s a bit further down the road, but even 1-2 meters of global sea level rise will collapse our civilization. Coastal cities will flood, destroying infrastructure and agricultural land, leading to food shortages, civil unrest, economic and political disruption. We have already locked in 7 meters of sea level rise. When all the ice has melted, the sea level rise will be 70 meters, that’s the maximum when all ice is gone. This will take some time, perhaps a few centuries. Boreal Permafrost Melt - Tipping point 1.5–2°C Boreal permafrost is frozen ground that has stayed frozen for a very long time. The vegetation (dead plants and animals) froze before it could decompose. When it thaws (unfreezes), it will decompose releasing CO₂ and methane. How much is stored? Estimates say 1500 gigatons of CO₂ and 400-500 gigatons of methane CH₄. Methane is 30 times more potent as a GHG. This would be an abrupt warming event. Obviously it won’t all be released at once, but scientists believe around 150 gigatons of CO₂ and 50 gigatons of CH4 will be released within this century. If 50 gigatons of CH₄ were to be released over 100 years it would be equivalent to 1250–1500 Gt of CO₂. So, about the same as we have already released in total since the Industrial Revolution. We are already seeing this happening at accelerating rates. This is a ticking time-bomb that could go off at any moment. We simply do not know when. Forest Dieback - Carbon Sinks to Carbon Sources - Tipping point 3–4°C Trees and plants absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, converting it to organic matter such as wood and plant matter. Plants and ecosystems sequester roughly 11-12 gigatons of CO₂ per year. Forests have acted as carbon sinks. When a forest dies, burns or is cut, that CO₂ is released back into the atmosphere. The Amazon currently acts as a carbon sink, sequestering 2 gigatons of CO₂ per year. In total the Amazon holds between 550 - 750 gigatons of CO₂. Due to deforestation, wildfires, increasing global temperatures and changing weather patterns, there is a very high probability that the Amazon shifts from being a carbon sink to a source within two decades. Every 10% that is lost, releases 55 - 75 gigatons of CO₂ – equivalent to 6-8 years of current global emissions. In addition to the release of more CO₂, adding to global heating, losing our forests would disrupt weather patterns, because they play a key role in the global water cycle. This would have huge impacts on food production and fresh water. Obviously, it won’t be gone in a day, it’s a process, but the trend is clear and shows no signs of stopping at the moment. Stopping deforestation would make a difference and at least buy us some time. What are the main causes of deforestation in the Amazon? 60-80% is for cattle ranching (beef) 10-20% in soybean production (used for livestock feed) 5-10% is logging When people say, stop eating beef, you really should stop. It’s in your best interest even if you don’t care about the animals, which you also should. Look at them: It’s not only the Amazon that is in trouble. All of our tropical rainforests, boreal forests, and temperate forests are experiencing die-off’s and degradation due to heat stress and droughts from climate change, invasive species and fungal infections, and deforestation from logging and agriculture. Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) - Tipping point 2–4°C The AMOC is a system of ocean currents that plays a critical role in regulating the Earth's climate. It's part of the global "conveyor belt" that redistributes heat and influences weather patterns worldwide i.e. temperatures and rainfall. How it works: Warm surface water from the tropics flows northward through the Gulf Stream. Warm water reaches the Arctic and North Atlantic, it cools, becomes denser, and sinks to the deep ocean. The cold, dense water then flows back southward, creating a continuous circulation. The AMOC keeps Northern Europe and North America warmer than they would otherwise be. It also plays a massive role in monsoons (rainfall) in Africa, India, South East Asia and South America, as well as the temperatures in these regions. It also cools down Antarctica, when it goes, we can expect the melting to increase at the souther pole. The AMOC is slowing down because of melting ice sheets and increased freshwater, which disrupts the balance of salinity and density in the ocean. You see that little blue blob in the North Atlantic? If the AMOC severely slows down or “collapses”, a possibility within a few decades, the Northern Hemisphere would see abrupt cooling of 5-10°C (paradoxically), sudden 1 meter sea level rise along the US east coast, and there would be large shifts in rainfall patterns across Africa, the Amazon and beyond. It would disrupt modern civilization and food production at a scale few can comprehend. If you think that sounds like good news, because it would counteract global heating in some countries, slow down the permafrost thaw and stop the Arctic ice sheets melting, think again. Global warming wouldn’t stop, it would simply be redistributed with even more extreme and unpredictable consequences. Think about the impacts on food production and fresh water, the basis of our existence. A total disaster. Coral Reef Bleaching and Ocean Acidification - Tipping point 1.5–2°C Coral reeds are carbon sinks, just like the Amazon. Losing the coral reefs means decreasing the oceans capacity to absorb CO₂, making ocean acidification and global warming even worse. It’s also about biodiversity and loss of food-webs. Coral reefs cover only 1% of ocean floor but support 25% of marine species. Many marine species rely on reefs for habitat and food. Losing the coral reefs would lead to many extinctions and disrupt entire ocean ecosystems, that we depend on. Again, expect food shortages. The coral reefs are already bleaching and dying. Globally we have lost 50% of coral reefs since 1950. If current trends continue, most coral reefs will be functionally lost by 2050. What About The Green Transition? So the plan is to electrify our cargo ships, airplanes, cars, semi-trucks, tractors, excavators, bulldozers and so on. At the same time we will create the materials needed for continuing our way of life; steel, aluminium, concrete, cement, plastics, glass, copper, rubber, and textiles, without using fossil fuels – since we are phasing them out, right? First of all, let’s consider if we even have enough materials to build out this green transition. Dr. Simon Michaux at the Geological Survey of Finland has done some research on this crucial question. Let me just cut to the chase: we do not have enough materials even if we had all the time in the world to do this transition. But we don’t have any time left. And building out this green transition would require vast amounts of fossil fuels for mining, manufacturing and transportation, tipping us over 2°C either way. This is what we are doing now. Secondly, let’s consider what is needed to manufacture most of our materials used for products and infrastructure. Most vehicles (cars, trucks, ships, airplanes) and machines require steel. How is steel made? With coal *steel from melt scrap can be done with electric ace furnaces, but this is small scale and requires complete system change. Almost every product requires plastics. How is plastic made? Petroleum *30% of plastic today is from recycled materials, can it scale? How are our roads made? Asphalt (petroleum) or concrete (cement - oil and coal). These are just some parts of the economy, but you probably get the point. Electrifying transportation is not enough. We are not going to save the planet by electrifying some parts of the economy. Even the most basic products have some input from fossil fuels. Thirdly, how do we transport all of these materials and products around the world? Cargo ships use bunker fuel (oil). Airplanes use jet fuel (oil). Trucks use diesel (oil). Tractors use diesel (oil). Mining involves many different vehicles such as dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, haul trucks, and they use diesel. And how is this transition going? It’s 2025 soon, have you seen any electric semi-trucks on the road? I haven’t. I see an endless amount of diesel trucks transporting stuff around. I see governments expanding airports with new runways. What. the. fuck. I have also not seen any electric cargo ships or airplanes. Have you? How long does an EV battery last? Maybe 10-20 years. Then what? What I have seen is record amounts of fossil fuels being burned, we have data on this. But we have the technology to do this!? We may have some of the technology. We do not have the materials and we certainly do not have the time. We are already at 1.5°C and will be at 2°C soon enough, nothing is going to stop that. Finally look at politics today. Does it seem like there is a will to do the above? Denial and right-wing politics are on the rise. Trump just got re-elected, unfortunately it wasn’t rigged, this really is what the people want. What are some second-order and third impacts? As mentioned at the beginning of the article: food shortages, lack of fresh water, disease, heat stress, mass migration and conflicts. Just in terms of natural disasters, think about the recent storm in Valencia. It wiped out crops, farms, and infrastructure. Homes and livelihoods destroyed. Where are they going to go? Can they afford to rebuild their homes and replace everything that they lost? Did they have insurance? Do they even have a job now, or was their workplace wiped out as well? Worked in the tourism industry? Good luck. All of that equipment would need to be replaced, and the land restored, if they plan to grow food in the region at the same scale, and a lot of people depend on that food. And this is just the beginning of climate disruption. Rebuild Valencia? What do you do when this happens every year because temperatures are going to increase and storms will keep getting worse, much worse. That’s where we are headed. When Hurricane Helene ripped across the southeastern US, it caused flooding and damage to infrastructure in areas that are not used to it. In Western North Carolina the destruction was massive to homes, infrastructure, and farms. Many people lost everything, including their homes and jobs, and didn’t have insurance. Where are they going to go? With what money? They spent days without power, cell phone service, and running water. Imagine not being able to flush your toilet for weeks, or months. That’s the kind of weird shit (pun-intended) you could be dealing with in the future. No power means no refrigeration, your food will spoil, that is, if you can get your hands on any food because the supermarket has already been raided, if you can even get there with the roads being blocked or flooded. Imagine there’s no FEMA or government coming to rescue you because they are overwhelmed by the amount of disasters and do not have the resources to rebuild and save everyone. Or your government has already partially collapsed and is being run by fools. The insurance industry is already pulling out from many high risk regions, such as Florida and California. No insurance means you can’t get a mortgage on the house, which means it’s more difficult to sell, which means the value goes down, and if it gets wiped out in a storm, that’s it. You lost your home and you are left with nothing. Imagine a country with 30% unemployment. With 50% unemployment. Or maybe 50% homelessness. How does that not fall apart? These are just a few examples, and how you need to start thinking about climate change. There are an endless amount of second and third order impacts from climate change alone that it’s impossible to list and discuss them all. The economy will collapse in one way or another (read my article on the end of growth) and you could see your savings wiped out quite suddenly. Climate migration, resource conflicts, political instability, health system strains, civil unrest, hyperinflation, food and water shortages. These are all coming, sooner than you think. Climate change is one symptom of a much larger problem that some call overshoot, a combination of overpopulation and overconsumption. There is no easy way out. It’s a predicament. A lot of people do not seem to understand the implications of climate change. The majority of people do not deny that climate change is happening (well, at least outside of the United States), and most of them also understand that it’s us causing it through emissions of greenhouse gases and land-use change. But they still don’t understand that they will probably die from it. Here are the most likely ways you could die because of climate change Link to article: https://predicament.substack.com/p/what-most-people-dont-understand submitted by /u/eco-overshoot to r/collapse [link] [comments]

AITAH for punching my stepdaughter after she played a prank on me that scared me?
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/prankuser2046 AITAH for punching my stepdaughter after she played a prank on me that scared me? Originally posted to r/AITAH Thanks to u/soayherder & u/queenlegolas for suggesting this BoRU TRIGGER WARNING: physical violence towards a minor Original Post July 20, 2024 I know the title sounds bad but please read and throwaway, plus fake names. I got tired of looking at my ugly faux-stainless refrigerator- and project review
So, I’m trying to make my house into the dollhouse pink wonderland of my dreams without spending gobs of cash. I did sink a little money into my kitchen to make it more functional and get the pink floors of my dreams. But I was left with the awful fridge the place came with. It wasn’t even real stainless steel, just painted a metallic gray with black trim. That was definitely not the vibe. Would I like an actual pink fridge from Big Chill or Smeg or whatever? You betcha! Do I have several thousands of dollars to buy it? Yeah, no. I saw lots of people on Pinterest covering up their fridges with peel and stick wallpaper so I thought I’d give it a go. This is the mostly finished result of my efforts. Let me know what you think. The materials- one can of pink spray paint. I’m not sure it matters which brand, but make sure that it is good for use on plastic. It should say that on the label. I used Rustoleum brand. The wallpaper is Ismoon Floral Boho Peel and Stick Wallpaper. I used one big roll. I don’t think I can use Amazon links in the posts, but I think if you search for that on amazon it should come up. You’ll also need a plastic scraper thing for smoothing on the wall paper and something to cut the wallpaper with- scissors for cutting pieces off the roll and something more like an exacto knife or razor for trimming along the edges. The process- Make sure to clean your fridge with a good degreaser and then use the spray paint according to instructions on the can to paint the plastic trim. Then, when that is done to your satisfaction and dry, get prepared to curse. This particular brand of peel and stick is the worst I have ever worked with. It’s not really repositionible because it gets super stuck to the surface on first touch. Then, when you pull it off, it stretches out. I ruined a couple pieces that way and there are a couple of places where there are wrinkles and imperfections due to this, mostly in not as obvious places, like the edge/bottom. Despite being super sticky, there are other places where it bubbled up and I had a hard time smoothing those out with my scraper. The results- well, I like it better than the faux stainless. Would I do it again? With a different, more amenable brand of peel and stick wallpaper? Probably. It certainly was way more cheap than buying a new fridge. I paid $6 in spray paint, $23 for the wallpaper and invested in about three hours of torturing myself with peel and stick wallpapered. I may come back in several month to tell you how it held up to use. Is this renter friendly? If you don’t paint the trim pieces like I did, maybe. Depending on the peel and stick brand you use. Some of them come off more easily than others. Others will leave residue or not want to come off at all. I wouldn’t risk your security deposit unless you are certain of the performance of your peel and stick. submitted by /u/GreenNerdieBirdie to r/femalelivingspace [link] [comments]

I'm Not The Vice Principal Anymore? Ok! + NEW UPDATES!!
This was my favourite saga from 2022 and now we have two new updates, including a sex schedule? My last day obeying orders and getting yelled at posted by u/Disgruntled_Veteran in r/teachers on June 27, 2022 Context from r/ProRevenge Ok, So this happened at the end of this school year. I posted what was going on in the r/Teacher group and several of the people there told me to post what happened in here. This story is in four parts and I apologize for the length. I also apologize for any teacher slang I use as it is like second nature to use it just like military cargo was when I was in the military. Basically, I was told that all the Assistant/Vice Principals in the district (other han at the high school) were being let go and a “teacher-on-assignment (TOA)” was going to take our jobs. I was not heart broken over this, but was treated badly by the new admin team taking my job and my principals job. Also, I tried to help my staff on my way out and it seems my bosses cared more about their images than my staff’s happiness. So here is the story. Part 1: So none of the other admin in my district had received our contracts for the coming school year yet. I was wondering what was going on, but I heard rumors about a pay scale shift and that was the reason for it. I found out Wednesday what is actually happening. Every assistant principal and vice principal in the district (why we have two different titles, I have no idea) is not getting renewed contracts (except the ones at the HS), their positions is being eliminated, and their jobs are being replaced with a new position that pays a teachers salary + a $2000 stipend. They are replacing the APs with “Learning Coordinators”. Apparently, the budget is the given reason, but I also heard rumors from someone at the district office. Each of us APs/VPs were scheduled to meet with one of the Asst. Supers Wednesday. We though it was about our contracts and we were correct. When I arrived, the “Acting” Superintendent was there with the head of HR. I was told about the elimination of my position, but not the reasons why. I was then given an option for the coming school year. I could go back into the classroom, I could work in the district office, or I could apply and interview for the new positions that is replacing my job. WTF! I wouldn’t care one lick if I was told that my position had been cut completely and I needed to go back into the classroom. I love the classroom. I miss teaching full time. However, to tell me to apply and interview for a job I already have is bullshit. We were told to give the district our answers by Friday and they would draw up contracts or schedule interviews. Wednesday afternoon, I went to see Tony who is an Asst. Superintendent and one of the few decent leaders in the school district. I heard from Tony that there was an internal shake up, but he wasn’t allowed to talk about it or even give me a hint about what happened. However, one of the Asst. Supers was being “reassigned”, aka demoted, to being the principal of my current school, my principal was not coming back due to health reasons, the Superintendent was “released from his contract”, and my school’s new Learning Coordinator position had already been filled. Who filled it? A school counselor from one of the high schools who just happens to be a friend and lackey of the Asst. Sup. that is now the new principal. So, early this morning I gave them my answer. I decided that I didn’t need until Friday to decide. I tried to make sure I sounded professional, but I made sure that my message was getting across by speaking with authority. I went in to the Acting Superintendent’s office and told him that I thought that laying off a bunch of people so they could hire others to do the same job but at less pay was bullshit. I told him that the way the school district handled certain situations was idiotic. I then gave several examples. I next told him that he was going to ruin a perfectly good school with an amazing team of educators by putting a lazy, mean, parent pleasing person in as its new principal and letting her put a lackey in as her second in command. I said that she was as useless as a screen door on a submarine and as mean as Dolores Umbridge. I finished the 3 minute speech by stating that I will work my ass off and finish the school year strong. I will prep things for the next school year so that the TEACHERS have an easier time. I also let him know I would never work at or recommend the district to anyone ever again. Then I left letting him know that I expect an amazing Letter of Recommendation by the end of the school day Friday afternoon since I earned it for my service the past few years. So what am I going to do now? Well, I called up an old friend Wednesday who is currently a principal at a STEAM charter school thats part of a chain of Charter STEAM schools and asked if he had a teaching position available? He’s been asking me every year for the past 5 years to come work for him. He told me he had three openings and I could have my pick of them. So next year, I will be a…. drumroll please: 6th Grade Teacher! And I am very happy about it! I even get to design my curriculum as long as it meets state standards! I could apply elsewhere for admin positions, but I think I need a break from school leadership. I need to love my work again like I used to as a teacher. Yes, there were/are many challenges and sometimes I hated going to work, but i do love being a teacher. I feel bad for my current staff because the regime change will hit them hard, but there is nothing I can do about it. I wish I could help them. The most I could do would be to take a teaching position at my current school, but then I would be miserable with them and be helpless to do anything to aid them. So, for myself and my daughter, who I love more than anything, I am making the move to a new school and going back to what I enjoy doing. Teaching. I am even bring my daughter to my new school to start next year as a 5th grader. I asked her if she wanted to stay at her current school or go to the STEAM school with me and she wants to go with me. She was excited since she has visited there several ties and loves the technology room, the robotics class, and the science labs. Plus she is friends with some of the kids there already. As a goodbye to myself staff, I am going out this weekend and I am going to buy some nice letter paper and scratcher tickets. I am going to write short, individualized goodbye to each of my staff members and at the end I will include the following words: “I’m giving you some scratcher tickets. My hope is that you are as lucky scratching them as I have been lucky to have worked with you.” So thats it. I have to finish my contract, but at the end of June, I am free. I am looking forward to teaching full time again and having a boss who will let me just do my job and not interfere. I don’t think I want to work in administration again, but maybe after a few years I will decide to work as an AP again. Note: Sorry for any spelling/grammar/punctuation errors. I am writing this while making my morning rounds. PART 2 So I put together goodbye gifts for all my staff and I'll be handing them out Friday (their last day with kids). They have a bunch of goodies that I posted about weeks ago. I was think this weekend about how to give the finger one more time to the district office and help my teachers out. Even in a small way. So I came up with it Sunday night. My district requires each teacher to attend additional training throughout the year. These are outside of the regular staff development trainings. They are run by district staff, SPED teachers, and admin. The training normally last 1-3 hours and the teacher gets a certificate for the time spent in the training. Each teacher is required to attend 24 hours of these before the end of the school year. Most teachers take them over the summer(if they are offered) so they don't have to take them during the school year. So I yesterday morning, before work, I was making copies of the certificates for all the courses I have run here the past few years. Classroom Management Strategies, Lockdown Procedures, Social Studies Strategies, Math Strategies, Reading Comprehension, and Environmental Print. I am going to fill them out with each of the teacher's names and number of hours. I am adding all the times I EVER spoke to the staff about these topics and putting down hours to correspond (rounding up to the nearest hour...ish). Wouldn't you know, each of those topics was 3 to 5 hours in length. Each staff member will have exactly 24 hours worth of training. I filled out the dates of the training for the 2022/2023 school year. Oh and I have an attendance sheets with ALL of their names and have them marked as being present. *Note: I checked with district and since I am still an administrator into the summer, I am allowed to run these training over the summer before I leave. Now, they can have their summer to themselves and not worry about taking classes during the school year. They can if they wish, but 99% of teachers here hate the mandatory training hours. I hope the staff likes the present. Since Friday, I am no longer a school administrator. I technically have another week to work, but I took vacation during that time because…. well, screw them. Now, I spent the last week packing up, giving aide and comfort to my (now former) staff, and causing problems for the new administrators who are assholes. Now, besides giving the entire staff a year free from additional PDs, I wasn’t planning on causing any more problems. Just quietly leave and drive off into the sunset. Shane style. But no. Apparently I don’t deserve a quiet week. The new principal (demoted from Asst. Super.) and her new Teacher On Assignment (TOA) decided, for some reason, to be rude to me. There was only one response to that… I aimed to misbehave! How were they rude to me you ask? First off, they ordered me to hurry and clean out my office. Apparently, the TOA wanted to start redecorating my office. I was literally told “Get all your personal stuff out of here ASAP. She wants her office now!”. I still had a week to work there and actual work to do. Second, the new principal tried to steal my personal chair and my personal office supplies and decorations. That chair was a gift to me from a friend. I found her just wheeling it out of my office and into her’s. My desk supplies and a banner from my wall were stack on its seat. I told her that it was my personal chair. Not the districts. She said “ok”. The very next morning, I found it missing. She had moved it into her office after I left for the day. Third, I was given a list of tasks to complete by Friday by the TOA (who is in no way, shape, or form my boss). These were not my job to do and are in fact the incoming admins duty to complete. Stuff the new admin are supposed to do. Things like: put together a new staff packets, schedule next years PDs, fill out and submit request forms, ect.. Finally, I was talked down to every single day by the new admin team. I was spoken to as though I were the hired help and they were the Royal Bitches. Seriously, I speak to a waitress that messes up my order with 20x the amount of respect that they showed me. They actually tried to get my attention by snapping their fingers at me. Like that would work. *Note: The new principal also has made some pretty anti-LGTBQ+ comments. I don't like narrow-minded people. So, I decided to to as I was told. I was a soldier, so I know how to follow orders. I removed EVERYTHING that was my personal property. That included my chairs, decorations, the stress relievers (punching bag, ect.), the fridge from the office, and the file cabinets in my office. Yes, I bought government surplus cabinets because I didn’t have any. All my files and all of my former principal’s files were in there. I had even bought the manila folder I used in it. So, I took ever piece of paper out of my cabinets, removed them from my labeled folders, and stacked them on the floor into one large pile. There is no order to how they are stacked. I took my chair from the principals office while she was in a meeting with parents. I just walked in and rolled it out. She stopped talking to the parents to ask what I was doing, and I responded that I was taking my personal property out ASAP as I was ordered to do. I had an old medium sized fridge I had placed in the office work room for office staff to store their food in. But it is mine, so I took the fridge. I brought in right out the front door and loaded it into my truck. I even took the new admins food out of it and left them on the table. Its my fridge. I warned the rest of the office staff I was taking it, but forgot to tell admin. Darn. I copied all my digital files over to a flash drive and then deleted everything off my work Google drive. Any thing I personally created or designed. Copied all my emails too. I informed the staff that if they need time off next year and need it approved, to submit the forms to me this week. I got several and they are all now approved. I got this idea from someone who messaged me here on Reddit and suggested I do this. Thanks for the advise. I approved every supply list item the staff submitted and even drove to the district warehouse to pick up some items personally. I even approved funds for a second-hand kiln for the art teacher. She found a good one on Craiglist. I had repaired my desk with bolts and tool from home. I took the bolts back. The desk is now lopsided again. The closet door was broken when I got there. So I repaired it. I have now put it back as it was when I was hired. The two way mirror to the detention room was mine. I had gotten it from a friend at another school (different district). It allowed me to watch ISS and detention students from my office without them seeing me. It popped that right out and took it home. Now the TOA has a hole in the wall the detention kids can look through. I had put together all the lockdown buckets and fire drill bags myself with my own money. I took all of them back. This I felt bad about, but i will give them out to the staff at my new school. I put a rush order on all classroom and building repairs and have an approved order to have every classroom repainted. I assembled new staff packets and the new school year binders. Besides the basics of what is required, I have included throughout the binders in random places: Dilbert cartoons, Famous Harry Potter quotes, The lyrics to Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me”, “I Kissed A Girl” by Katie Perry, “All Star” by Smashmouth, and “We Built This City” by Starship. A map of the area where I marked all the good places to eat lunch off campus, Funny Farside teacher comics, Cheesy “Teacher Jokes”, The union contact info., Crosswords, sudoku, and word searches A list of educational lawyers.... just in case. I also included in the binder the admin Wifi password for them since that signal is stronger for some reason. I went ahead and wrote out the PD schedule for next year. Oddly, Every Wednesday is listed as ”free time” or “work in your classroom”. I’m sure they will change it, but I don’t know when they will find out what it says. I had a master list of donators and partners in the community. It was posted on a whiteboard in my office. I got over four dozen businesses and people in the community to help with various things or donate over the years. I spent a lot of my time building relationships with them and making deals. I took a photo of it and then I erased the list. And took the whiteboard since it was mine. Friday, I flew the LGBTQ+ flag instead of the state flag. I also placed LGBTQ+ flags in each classroom in case the staff want to display them. Then I got yelled at...... three times. The first time was when I took back my chair. I was told it was unprofessional to just take it without asking. Especially with guests present. I responded with “Yes, it was unprofessional to take MY chair without asking.”. The second time was when the TOA found the refrigerator gone. She said that it was community property. I told her “No, its my property and I was told to take all my property from the campus.”. The third time was when I was in the parking lot leaving and they found the piles of papers. The principal flagged me down and told me to clean it up. I told her I was off the clock and that the district never reimbursed me for the cabinets so I had to take them with me. I am expecting a call from HR today asking for my assistance setting everything back up since with all my stuff removed and erased, the admin team has to actually put in some hard work. I’d come in. For my consultant rate. $75.00 an hour with a minimum contract for 12 hours. Update: I Don't Work Here Anymore. Posted on July 12, 2022 So, as some of you know, I left the world of being an administrator a few weeks ago. I tried to leave behind some nice .... gifts when I left. I wasn't looking to cause problems my last few weeks, but the new admin team treated me in a way that was unacceptable. So I decided that Malcolm Reynolds had it right when he said "I aim to misbehave.". Well, the Tuesday after I left, I received a call from HR. I ignored it. I then left for a road trip with my daughter where we went to San Francisco for a few days and went to two Giants games. Unfortunately, they lost both games. While we were on our trip, they called and emailed me at my personal email account (my work one was deleted by them). I ignored the calls and never opened the emails. My daughter and I then went to Disneyland for a few days of fun and then returned this past Friday. I then checked the voicemails and emails. I was asked, begged, and then ordered to come to the HR for important meetings. "It is very important that we speak to you as soon as possible." is what they said repeatedly. So Yesterday I went in to the district office wearing cargo shorts, a shirt I got at Disneyland, and flip flops. I don't work there so I don't need to dress up. When I arrived, I was originally treated like a visiting VIP. The HR manager and her assistant tried to butter me up like a Pillsbury biscuit. After a few minutes of them trying to make small talk and me then letting them know I had plans to go to lunch in 30 minutes, they got to the point. They wanted me to turn over a few things took with me that, though they belonged to me, they said were sorely needed at the school. They gave me a list from the new principal which included, but limited to: My chair (Seriously!) My refrigerator and appliances My community contacts board (People/businesses that I build relationships and partnerships with) My personally designed forms and worksheets Two way mirror My Lockdown Buckets and FireDrill Bags They also wanted copies of every record I kept and notes I took on the staff and students. The notes I took on the staff were so I could personalize gifts for them and have conversations with them on their interests. I said "No" to all those requests. I told the ladies that the furniture and appliances were mine that I brought in. I stated that the chair was a gift to me from a friend and that the new principal can afford to buy her own chair. I also stated that I left any official school/district documents there and any I took with me and/or deleted were of my own making and my intellectual property. I also stated that my contacts were developed over the years on my personal time and at personal cost to me. I also stated that everything I took, that I had submitted reimbursement, was never reimbursed. I kept my records and pay stubs. I never saw a red cent from those submissions. They offered to pay me for some of the items and gave me a rough figure of what the district would pay me to return the fridge, the forms, buckets, bags, mirror, and contact board. I told them that I did not want to hand them over to the new admin team since they had treated me so poorly. The asked me again and tried to reason that some of those things could be interpreted as school property. I told them that The were welcome to try and force me to return anything that was legally mine to them, but I would be willing to fight it in court. I also told them that those two new administrators made me uncomfortable and that their treatment of me could be considered making a hostile work environment. Especially when they tried to make me do their jobs for them. I then gave the HR team my lawyers info. * Note: I dated a lawyer after my divorce for a few years and we are still good friend and she has offered herself as my "forever retained lawyer" that I can use her name and she'd help me if she could. I rarely use her name, but when I have needed her legal advice, she always comes through. I also help her with physical chores when she or her family needs help. I then wished the lady a good school year in the term to come and left. I doubt I will ever hear from them again. Update: Karens With Power Are As Dangerous As They Are Annoying Posted July 27, 2022 Ever notice that there are always people out there that just have to break beautiful things? The people who see a sand castle and stomp on it or the idiots who visit Stonehenge and carve their names into it. Why? Note: The new principal is the kind of person who smiles when things go wrong because she has already thought of someone to blame it on. So as some of you may know, I am starting my new job in a week in a half. I haven't heard back from my old district since I met with their HR department after my road trip with my daughter. But Monday I heard from the senior secretary (aka Office Goddess) of my old school. She's been at the school for something like 20 years and knows everything that is going on there. Its her turf. She cares about the kids and the staff and she is great wonderful AMAZING! Well, I got a call from her and she asked if I would do a welfare phone call to one of my former staff members who we will call Beth. I asked her why does she want me to call and why me instead of the someone who still works there. I don't work there any more and I am sure someone at the school would be better suited for it, like a counselor. Then she told me why she wanted me to call. So the new principal and TOA have made many several changes to the school in their short time there. According to the Office Goddess, they have: - Eliminated the House System. (The old principal and I created 4 Houses to have the kids compete year round for points with prizes for the top house each year.) - Moved 8 teachers to different grade levels at the last minute. Including moving a teacher who has spent her career (15ish years) only teaching Kinder to teach the 6th grade. - Cancelled several staff activities including the monthly breakfast bash and the Welcome Back competition (usually laser tag or bowling). - Ordered special office desks for themselves that can be raised and lowered depending on if they want to sit or stand. (She said that the ones ordered run something like $500 a pop) - But worst of all, the moved the librarian, Beth, to teach Middle School ELA. Now Beth is a very kind and well like staff member. She is hard working and also adaptable. She is also certified in Early Childhood Ed., Elem. Ed, and Secondary ELA. She also has cancer. She has been fighting it for a few years now. I've watched her struggle and keep fighting it. I've also watched a healthy athletic woman of about 130 lbs drop to a pale shadow of that which couldn't weight more than 90 lbs soaking wet. Beth was a teacher for years at my old school, but a while back, when she found it hard to teach while going through chemo, I made her the librarian and fought to keep her at her teacher salary. The district fought me saying an aid was cheaper and could do the job. I wrote a post on here about it a while back. Officially, Beth is the school's media specialist, library arts teacher, and an ELA support specialist. Unofficially, her job is to basically reads to the younger students, encourage them to read, helps older students with their research, and helps older students learn how to cite their work. The position also gave her plenty of time to rest, let her go to medical appointments easily, and gave her a bathroom next to her desk since she needed to go more often now. Plus it kept her pay the same and kept her health insurance going. It was a rare example of a true win win. I had an amazing librarian and she got paid, benefits, and a lighter work load so she could heal. Well, the new principal, in all her Jar Jar Binks wisdom, has decided that Beth would be better off in a classroom again and that parent volunteers should run the library. Its saves money and puts Beth where she is useful according to the admin's twisted sense of logic. And yes, they know of Beth's condition and why she is in that post. Beth found out Friday about the reassignment. (Yes, it is legal as her contract doesn't specify librarian. Just teacher and her pay scale level.). Beth tried to explain the situation to the idiotic woman who, if you gave her a penny for her thoughts, you'd get change back. But she doesn't seem to care. She says that Beth will be just fine in the classroom and will really help the kids academically. So I called Beth yesterday and we talked for about half an hour. She told me that she may have to resign because she can't keep up with the rigors of teaching middle school ELA in her condition (which is not improving unfortunately). She is supposed to go through another cycle of chemo treatments soon. I told her I wish I could help her. She said she may just become a substitute and work when she can. She said she is covered under the husband insurance already, but ours was better. I feel really bad for her. I suggested that she go to HR and let them know that if she is moved back into a full-time classroom that it would have a negative effect on her health and put her at risk. I also told her to get notes from her medical providers stating her case to stay in her less stressful position. I then gave her the name and phone number of a lawyer that specializes in educational law. I also let her know that I would help her find work if she wanted me to. I have already reached out to a few people I know. I contacted my ex-wife's sister-in-law who works for a non-profit that provides digital literacy and citizenship programs for people who come to the U.S.. She said she might be able to hire her on to give remote lessons via Zoom. So lets keep our fingers crossed. This is a perfect example of what happens when people with the compassion of Ted Bundy and the ego Donald Trump are put in-charge of others. The new admin team cares more about the budget and losing like they do something rather than whats best for the staff and students. I don't know what day in history it was when educators stopped leading schools and the politicians and the parent pleasers looking for a pay increase took over, but it was a dark day for us all. I wish I had a happier story to share, but my old school is going to Hell in a handcart according to the Office Goddess. I wish all of you a great coming school year. I Feel Loved: Update To I'm Not The Vice Principal Anymore? Ok. No Problem. Posted Sept 13, 2022 So here is an update to what has happened at my old school. I will say that their action make me proud, fill me with energy, and make me feel a little loved. Now, I haven't heard from anyone in the school for the past few weeks. I have been really busy with my new teaching gig. I love my class by the way. Well, it turns out that my misbehaving spread like a wild fire amongst the staff. My friend Tony let me know while we were watching a baseball game this weekend. Here is a summary of what has happened. I also heard from 2 of my old teachers. Here are the highlights. The new principal enacted new policies. Here are 3 that pissed off the staff. - Every teacher has duties everyday at least once a day. (I NEVER made my teacher work duty.) - Every teacher is required to have Zoom meeting with all their parents at least once a quarter. - Every teacher must do 2 of the following: sponsor a club, be on a committee, or coach a team. - Lesson plan (For the next week) reviews with the TOA every Friday during prep periods. - No office referrals for anything considered to be a minor infraction no matter how many times it happens. - Teachers must sign in every morning in the office and out at the end of the day and record the times. - No leaving campus without approval. - Teacher will need to cover for other teachers that are out. 2) During the first day back meeting where she shared these changes, she apparently spoke harshly, authoritatively, and wouldn't allow the teachers to speak their mind. A "My way or the highway" atmosphere. 3) In response to the above and more, together over a dozen teacher took their "Welcome Back Baskets" (A school mug, cheap candy, Post-its, and pens) and slammed them on the principal's desk and voiced their displeasure. She threatened to write them up. They threatened to quit. This was their first day back from summer break. 4) The new principal got tired of them mentioning that I never made them do these things, so she lost it and "Disgruntled_Veteran isn't here any more. You are not to mention him anymore. I'm in charge here and he can take his retarded ideas and shovel them up his ass!" Apparently, she immediately regretted saying that an tried to back peddle. 5) Half the teacher who heard the above went to HR and filed complaints about being yelled at, the uses of the word retarded, and even claimed they felt "sexually harassed" by her statement about shoving thing in my ass. I don't know how serious HR took them. 6) Multiple staff members threatened to not renew their contracts at the end of the year. They said they can get teacher jobs anywhere due to the shortage. One even threatened to give her 30 days notice right there. 6) Multiple staff members complained to the union who contacted the district and stated that the policy changes that were not in place last year and not in their contracts. 7) Two staff members complained to the union and HR about the principal removing the LGBTQ+ flags from their classrooms. They aren't in FL. 8) The Superintendent had a meeting with the principal. Tony couldn't get into all the details, but basically she was told that if she doesn't drop the bullshit, stop pissing the staff off, and gets any more serious complaints that she will be removed from her post. My old staff members said that for the past two weeks, she hasn't left her office. She never see her and only the TOA is sending emails. I guess only the TOA is running Wednesday meetings and she is clueless on what to do and wastes a lot of time. So the staff stood up for themselves (and me to a point) and they came out on top! I am very proud of them. According to a comment, u/DisgruntledVeteran advised Beth is now working somewhere else, with a health plan and kindness. Admin Wants Sex Schedules posted February 18, 2023 So my last school school, as well as its district, are real shit show. Some of you might have seen my post in the past about when I left the vice principal position there and the new school administration didn't take it so well. Well, I've been so busy lately that I hadn't really chatted with any of the people from that school in the past month or two. Life, right? Well, last night I ran into a couple of coworkers at TGI Fridays. They asked me to join them and promised me some fantastic information. How could I refuse? So apparently the principal of their school, a recently demoted assistant superintendent, has been gone for the last 2 days. Apparently at the Wednesday staff meeting she made the comment that there were currently five members of the staff who were pregnant. She then mentioned that she is struggling to find people to be able to cover the maternity leave for the teachers that I'll be out before the school year ends. And also that it would be difficult to find coverage at the beginning of the school year for anyone who's going to miss the first few weeks or month of it. She then said something really really stupid. She said: "If anyone here is planning on trying to have a kid or planning on doing anything that could get you pregnant, can you please talk to me first so we can see if it'll fit into the schedule." Now, maybe she meant it as a joke. However, she's not very well liked it that school and that was enough for several members of the staff, including two of the pregnant ones, to go down to HR and complain right after the meeting. Thursday morning the principal was not there and they were told by the instructional coordinator that she would be off campus until further notice and all inquiries and problems should be directed towards her instead. Come friday, still not back. Then some people did some digging and it turns out that the principal may be on a suspension for making comments of a sexual nature towards the staff and asking them to coordinate their sex schedules with her. As far as my former co-workers know, they have no idea when she's coming back, but her instructional coordinator has already told them that many of her meetings next week are canceled and that she'll be taken over several of the planned meetings. So as a warning to all administrators out there, don't ask us to tell you when we plan to have sex. Sex Schedule Principal is Back Posted February 25, 2023 I was having a game night last night and some former colleagues from my old school came by for some Cards Against Humanity and Munchkin. I asked if their boss came back yet. And they gave me the run down. So she returned on Wednesday. Exactly one week after the incident. She showed up to the Wednesday staff meeting. And she wasn't alone. Someone from HR and an asst. superintendent was with her. Before the regular meeting began, the principal gave a short speech. Somewhere in it was a brief "I'm sorry" followed by repeated remarks about not taking every joke seriously and coming to her directly if there is a problem. Neither HR nor the asst. super spoke up or stopped her. At some point in the rant, two of the most veteran teachers grabbed their stuff and walked out of the room. I guess HR followed them out, spoke to them, and brought them back in a few minutes later. After the cesspool of a speech was over she continued to run the meeting like nothing happened. the HR rep and asst. super sat in back watching. Apparently, several people went to the HR rep after the meeting to voice their problems with them going directly to her or that they shouldn't take jokes seriously. They were all told to schedule an appointment to speak to HR if they have concerns. Those same people then went to the principal's office to complain about her "apology". She told them to schedule individual meetings with her through "her secretary". She doesn't have a secretary anymore. That person resigned months ago and was not replaced due to the budget. The principal forced the front office receptionist to act as her personal secretary. This just goes to show that the principal, a recently demoted asst. super, has something on the higher ups or the district itself. Something that is allowing her to keep her post for the rest of the year. If she does any other stupid stuff and I hear about it, then I'll share it. I guess the scuttlebutt is that no matter what, she will not be offered a position for next year. I heard she is already applying for other admin positions as they appear online submitted by /u/mermaidpaint to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]
