I went to a Buc-ee's in northern AL in late 2022 on my way back from cave diving in north central Florida. IIRC, it was pretty new. Too damned big and busy. I got gas, but went to a Love's to get snacks. I really like Love's. I stopped at locations in various places on road trips over the past 10 years or so. Bathrooms are clean. My favorite gas stations are Kwik Trip in WI.

My son will be 12 months old when we take our first family vacation since he was born, and I'm already stressed about the drive. The problem is that he absolutely HATES car rides. It starts with complaining, then yelling, then crying, and eventually full on screaming until he's coughing and struggling to catch his breath. We're planning about a 5 hour drive, and then obviously we'll have to do it all over again on the way back. Please give me all your survival tips. 😭 We generally don't do screens, but for difficult car rides we're willing to bend the rules, so I'd also love recommendations for age-appropriate shows/videos that might hold a 12-month-old's attention. Things we've already tried: • The Happy Song • New toys introduced during the drive • Snacks • Frequent stops • Ms. Rachel • A proper convertible car seat (not an infant seat) • Having one parent sit in the back with him All of these help for a few minutes, but none of them are getting us through a 5-hour drive. A couple of things that make this even harder: He's a terrible sleeper, so even if we perfectly time the drive around his naps, they're usually pretty short. Leaving at 4–5 AM isn't really an option. If he wakes up to get into the car, his night is over. There's basically zero chance he'll continue sleeping in the car. So we're mostly looking for strategies that help an awake, opinionated almost-1-year-old survive several hours in the car. 😅 Flying isn't really an option because it's very expensive and doesn't save as much total travel time as we originally thought. Has anyone been through this and found something that actually works? Please save our sanity. 🙏😭 Edit: For everyone saying we just shouldn't go - It's the only opportunity for us to have something like this for a very long time. and the only place available to vacate in my country that offers the proper conditions for it. Weather, prices, safety, views and facilities. I wish I could have something closer but we can't, and we REALLY need that vacation after a long, difficult year. Last summer was the first time my daughter (age 2 at the time) got to see my parents, sister, and her cousins. My parents surprised us with a check to cover our cost of the vacation because my sister (with six kids who lives in Florida) gets stuff all the time from them and we never ask for or get anything. We live on the outskirts of Houston, so it will be a 1,000 mile drive there and back again. We will spend at least four nights there, one night in between, and hotels are expensive. It will be at least six night in motels. We will fully take advantage of the motel breakfasts provided, and maybe take a little extra for snacks during the day. (Please don't judge us.) On the way there and while we are staying, however, we can't afford to get fast food or do restaurant dining for a minimum of $30 a meal for me, my husband, and our three year old. I only just got hired as a school bus driver two months ago and was not able to get summer school routes because of seniority claims. We will be able to take two medium sized coolers with us in our truck and we can restock with ice as needed. I would love suggestions for meals and snacks we can easily pack up for the trip and that are VERY EASY to put together on the fly. My daughter and I are a little less picky than my husband, but I don't want to just give her chips, bread, or macaroni and cheese. A healthy addition of bread is fine, like two slices of bread a day. I would like her to have a good mixture of fruits, veggies, and protein without an overload of carbs. My husband will eat what I provide, but if there isn't anything that satisfies his sweet or savory tooth, he will put stuff on the credit card. Hey everyone, I’m currently planning a ~15-day road trip (super excited but also a little nervous lol). Most of my checklist so far is based on shorter trips I’ve done before, like weekend drives or 3–5 day trips. But since this one is a lot longer, I’m starting to worry that I might be missing things that only really come up on long trips. I’ve got all the basics covered (clothes, mattress, toiletries, snacks, cooking gear, navigation, etc.), but I feel like there are probably some “long trip gotchas” I haven’t thought of yet. Hi mamas! I’m having Post-Taking-a-Stand guilt and wanted to get some thoughts. Background information: my husband struggles with intense anger issues. A few years ago, he had a major outburst and ended up in therapy and starting medication. That helped immensely, and he’s put in a ton of work. He became much more patient with our two kids (now 3 and 4.5, both girls) and more open to talking through issues instead of just blowing up. That’s not to say he’s ‘cured.’ (IDK if that’s even a thing with anger.) Lately, he’s been stressed at work and has been short with everyone. We had planned a trip to his parents’ house for Christmas/New Years, about 7 hours away by car. His siblings and their spouses and kids would be there as well, and they live all over the country so it’s a rare occasion that they’re all gathered. I like his family fine, but visiting them is a trigger for him (his mom is a stressor). Additionally, traveling with the kids is a big trigger. The last time we attempted a road trip was June; we drove about 5 hours and stayed in an Airbnb with husband’s family (almost all of the same people as this recent occasion, but not everyone). My husband lost his temper majorly in the middle of the night when 3yo couldn’t sleep, and it was utter hell managing a trip on no sleep, dealing with inlaws, and dealing with my husband being furious the whole time. This trip, we were doing well. It was a happy family road trip vibe, the kids were excited. We were listening to Frozen and singing and snacking. Fun times. Then we stopped for a bathroom break about halfway through the drive. I took our 4.5yo to go potty, and my husband stayed in the car with 3yo (it’s easier for me to take them one at a time, lol). When I got back to the car, my husband immediately jumped out and SLAMMED the car door so hard it was like he was trying to break the door. My 3yo was screaming hysterically and when I opened the door she said through tears “Daddy told me to shut up!” After getting her to the potty and getting her calmed down, I was not happy with my husband but didn’t want the kids to witness any more of a scene than they were already, so I bit my tongue and my husband started to drive. He was driving angrily, and it was starting to snow. I gripped the car handle instinctively, and husband slammed on the brakes and shouted “WHAT???” I told him he needed to calm down, and I said I needed to drive for now. What followed was an absolute tirade laden with insults, every curse word in the book (which caused 3yo to start shouting the F word!), specifically calling me a POS over and over. I stayed totally calm. Zen. Again - trying to let my kids see one calm adult. My silence made him angrier, and the insults kept flying. Suddenly it was about how selfish I am, how the kids abuse him all day every day (he works, I’m a SAHM). I wanted a recording of it because I felt like no one else would believe how quickly it escalated. And I wasn’t responding! When he finally paused, I quietly told him we couldn’t continue the trip, and that I wanted to take the kids home. I started crying as I spoke, but I was still quiet. He kept going ballistic. I called my FIL (a lovely person, for the record) to explain what was going on and to apologize for the girls not coming. I offered to bring them myself another time. FIL was super understanding, as he knows the background with my husband. Mainly, I just felt that I couldn’t continue to put my girls through that. They can’t see their father treat their mother that way, or talk about it them the way he did, or hear all those curse words (I love cursing, don’t get me wrong - but not around little kids). And I knew that if we proceeded with the trip, he’d only get worse and worse. I just needed to bring them home and reset. My husband started begging me to change my mind, but I calmly told him no several times. He then asked to be taken to a car rental place so he could drive to ILs, and we drove to a Hertz place, but then he changed his mind. So we all drove back home. I keep replaying the thing in my head, and when I reason it out, I feel I did the right thing for myself and my kids. I checked the sidebar to see if there was already a thread for snacks, but didn't find one. If there is already a thread like this, please link me! I'm going to be traveling for about 12-14 hrs in the car this coming Thursday, and I still want to try and stick to my 1200 calorie maximum. I find that the issue I have is feeling full and combating boredom on road trip days. I'm making sure that when it's not my turn to drive I have plenty of entertainment (books, video games, movies) to keep myself from feeling bored, so there's one problem solved.
