Showcasing Mattel's Original Jasmine Dolls
I saw "Aladdin" in theaters in 1992 and what I wanted more than anything for Christmas that year was a Jasmine doll. I loved her so much- and when I grew up, I wanted to have her exactly as I remembered unboxing her on Christmas morning when she was new: shinning, shimmering, and splendid. So I tracked down her and some other older Jasmines eBay. They are as lovely as I remember and bring me so much joy. Original Jasmine. Jasmine's purple dress, rather than her default teal outfit, was always my favorite, and what I display her wearing. It's so gorgeous! I wish doll outfits still used whatever this pink material it is- it was very common on '90s dolls, now you don't see it anywhere. I also really love the sparkles printed on her outfit. For a time, that was a staple of Disney dolls and gave them an extra touch of magic, like they were all sprinkled with pixie dust. Turning her around, you can see a few quirks of displaying her- since I did not want to undo her in-box hairstyle and remove her original hair bands, I couldn't take out her teal headband. So, it's still in her hair; I simply do my best to hide it from view. And apparently one of the rubber bands has completely decayed from age- yikes! I'll add fixing that to my to do list. Arabian Lights Jasmine. I didn't own this doll as a child, but oh I wanted to! I don't have much to say about her because her beauty speaks for itself- but how wonderful I can enjoy not only her, but the original box art for these dolls! It's very nostalgic. Special Sparkles Jasmine. I remember seeing this doll in the Disney Store as a child and falling instantly in love. This particular doll is not my original, but a replacement I bought for display, because my childhood one grew dingy with time and love. She is a stunner, the most beautiful shade of blue and absolutely dripping in sparkles. A true diamond of a doll. submitted by /u/SapphireJasmine24 to r/DollDisney [link] [comments]

In 1997 Hollywood Reporter called this movie : "...Dimwitted generic monstrosity of misconnected gadgetry and soulless techno-gunk..."
‘The Fifth Element’: THR’s 1997 Review On May 9, 1997, the Luc Besson-directed sci-fi actioner in U.S. theaters. By Duane Byrge On May 9, 1997, Luc Besson unveiled sci-fi actioner The Fifth Element in U.S. theaters, days after the film premiered as the opening-night title at the 50th Cannes Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below: The four main elements of life — earth, air, water, fire — are threatened by a fifth element in Gaumont’s The Fifth Element, which Sony will distribute in North America. Unfortunately, the four main elements of this Gaumont production — noise, costumes, production design, special effects — are not invigorated by a necessary and woefully missing fifth element, namely a coherent and appealing story. While one can understand that the Cannes Film Festival bends over backward to program a French film for opening night, this Luc Besson project is a generally dimwitted generic monstrosity of misconnected gadgetry and soulless techno-gunk. It’s so chaotically clamorous that one fears its bombastic shock waves may have already caused the greats of French cinema (from Melies to Truffaut) to turn over in their graves. Unwittingly, Gaumont has served up a messy U.S.-style blockbuster movie, which, as we are constantly reminded by the xenophobic cineastes of the French embargo crowd, is a culturally corrupting influence. Undeniably, co-writer and director Besson has embarked on an ambitious, big-screen mission here and has spliced together story elements from a number of sci-fi or adventure forms. As usual, the more complicated the story, the more simplistic the conflict, and, once again, it’s the same special effects story, a battle between good and evil. And, true to mythic form, the savior of the world is a rather unlikely chap. In this case, he’s not the son of a desert-area farmer but a 23rd-century cab driver named John McClane, er, Korben Dallas. While there is nothing wrong with mixing tried-and-true story forms and whipping them into an entertaining and appealing scenario, screenwriters Besson and Robert Mark Kamen have put together a hyper-busy, threadbare and, ultimately, incoherent narrative that reduces The Fifth Element to the skimpy proportions of a fashion show for designer Jean-Paul Gaultier’s haute couture stitchings. Admittedly, Gaultier’s outre duds are interesting when worn by, say, Naomi Campbell, but on the players here, these peculiarities are off-putting. Nevertheless, there are some petits bon mots in the film, such as evil guy Gary Oldman’s neo-Hitler look. Narratively challenged, visually monotonous and aurally overpowering, The Fifth Element is a staggering accretion of all the wrong elements and some rather dopey ones as well. Wait until you see the disappointing design or the evil mercenaries: Cross Yoda with an ape and stick him in a rubber dog suit. It’s hard to fault the actors in this production, especially Bruce Willis, who has played this role so many times before with such well-oiled perfection and does look rather fearsome with his bleached hair. The other players are reduced to spouting expositional lines that do not even meet the low standards of most sci-fi dialogue or, a la Willis, they are limited to sporting funny hairstyles, Drape the Francois Mitterrand Medal of Protectionism on co-star Milla Jovovich for enduring bad dialogue, Band Aid-type costumery and a rag-doll hairdo. — Duane Byrge, originally published on May 7, 1997 submitted by /u/OatmealKittenz to r/fifthelement [link] [comments]

I just started collecting!!
I just recently started collecting, what do we think? I really love the Water Lily one, I got her for Christmas and her dress is GORGEOUS. The rubber bands in all of their hairstyles have dry rotted and I’m debating opening the boxes to try and fix it, but I don’t want to mess them up somehow so I’m not sure. Any recommendations? Leave it or not? I also found the sixth doll in the Classique Collection and I plan on getting her soon! Just have to find the rest!! submitted by /u/PatientEnd1906 to r/Barbie [link] [comments]

Rubber bands alternatives for dolls?
Does anyone know if there are any alternatives/good quality rubber bands that don’t disintegrate or break? I want to use them for my dolls hairstyles but they only last a few weeks. I also heard the ones used for braces (the clear ones) don’t break, is that true? submitted by /u/Hisohkhaa to r/Dolls [link] [comments]

Rubber hair bands are THE WORST.
So I wanted to do a couple of dutch braids in my hair. I used small rubber bands to tie my hair and when I wanted to redo the hairstyle it was so hard to take out… I feel like I broke off so many hairs. I’m freaking out, since I’ve been so gentle on my hair and it has been looking much better. I’m probably overreacting, but it still makes me sad. Why do so many hair tutorials require these demonic hair bands?! If you do this every day you’ll damage your hair so much! (This is basically a small rant, I didn’t know which flair to use.) submitted by /u/bistdubeimirbach to r/longhair [link] [comments]

Any advice on replicating ancient Maya hairstyles/ponytails? I've tried rubber bands and hair ties but can't get that classic look.
Yeah so want to honor my K'iche' Maya Kik' by dressing as how my grandfathers did. I have zero experience with hairstyling, any ponytail I try to tie ends up flopping down like a limp dick and doesn't point up like the hairstyles you see in classic Maya art. I mean it just looks like a strip of cloth was used in most depictions but I don't have any clue how to tie it so elegantly and look proper. I've already shaved the sides of my head 'cuz I'm going for the full Zero Wolf look from Apocalypto lol. Any advice on how to recreate the amazing hairstyles from that movie would be appreciated. Can you keep the rubber bands in the hair when trying to get out the gel?
Haven’t washed any of my dolls hair yet but a lot of them are pretty crunchy. I got Phaedra and though her hair isn’t curled or anything her pigtails still have a lot of gel in them so I was wondering if I could keep the rubber bands in her hair while I washed it. I feel like I wouldn’t be able to get her hairstyle right again if I took the bands out, but I don’t know if keeping the bands in makes it harder to wash or anything. submitted by /u/merrisoftheferris to r/RainbowHigh [link] [comments]

Nitpick the dress code? I can do that too.
Our junior high dress code was a pain. Most teachers didn’t care so long as kids weren’t distracting. The principal of the junior high, however, insisted on enforcing every single rule. A friend of mine wore a long sleeve shirt under a tank top. The principal insisted she couldn’t wear the tank top because tank tops were against the dress code. But she couldn’t take off the tank top because her shirt was slightly see through, another violation. Instead of allowing her to simply wear the tank over her long sleeve shirt, she sent her home. I decided this wouldn’t stand. I studied every rule in the dress code to prove how stupid it was. I started off small and worked my way up. No open toed sandals. - This one was easy. I wore open toed high heels. Nothing in the rules against high heels, and the open toed rule only applied to sandals the way it was written. Shirts must be tucked in to pants. Belts must be worn through belt loops. - Knocked out two here by wearing a skirt. Skirts, or at least the one I wore, had no belt loops and wasn’t considered pants so I was not required to tuck in anything or wear a stupid belt. Backpacks must be plain colored with no pins/excessive accessories. - I picked up a briefcase from a resale shop and slapped it with every sticker I could find. Any random logo or inspirational sticker I had laying around got slapped on it. Technically, a briefcase isn’t a backpack. No costumes allowed. (I verified this, my school considered a costume to be anything only worn for a certain period of time or for a certain reason. If you wore it all day, it was an outfit, not a costume.) - I abused this one so badly. Once a week I dressed up as a lawyer, a clown, a hippie, a Shakespearean actor, a superhero, a camera man, etc. complete of course with as many accessories as I could handle. So long as I never took them off (this made gym class interesting), they weren’t considered part of a costume. I ended up letting kids pick out what I would dress as each week. No crazy hairstyles. - Kept my hair natural colors, and kept the styles as something that was at least popular at one point. Beehive took forever but was the most satisfying. Bonus points if I could find pictures of adults who were still wearing their hair like that currently. Shirts are not allowed to have logos or print, only patterns and consistent designs. - Consistent designs was my loophole here. No print, fine, but consistent print made specifically to look like a design? At this point, the principal was going mad and she didn’t let this one slide. She insisted I change, which I expected. Gym shorts must teach students knees or as long as their fingertips. - Guess who’s finger tips reach about three below her butt? Me! I went from wearing a shirt that said bite me all over it, to an outfit that included short shorts. But my shorts were still longer than my fingers. I even offered to change back into my other clothes. At this point in the year, we were almost done with school. Other kids were following my lead, and we were driving the principal mad. I decided to kick it up a bit further. I attacked what should have been the most basic rules. No sunglasses. - Rose colored glasses aren’t considered sunglasses because you can easily see through them. Still, the principal jerked them off my face and insisted I wouldn’t get them back until the end of the day. No tank tops. - I wore a dress with spaghetti straps. It wasn’t a shirt, so I wasn’t breaking a rule. Belts must be plain with no dangerous materials. - Plain it must be, so plain I went. I wore a shoe string as a belt. I wore a braided yarn string as a belt. I even wore a spandex band sewn to my pants as a belt. No crocs. - Crocs are not the only rubber shoe my friends. I found every off brand croc I could get a hold of. Finally, at the end of the year, I wore one of my most outrageous outfits. I wore a see-through dress (think bathing suit cover up) over leggings and a shirt that barely classified as a t shirt. I wore shoes with a four inch cork heel. I had on fake glasses (no lenses) and a four inch wide headband. I wore bangles up to my elbows and anklets on each foot. I had a box to carry my books in that was decorated with blinking battery powered fairy lights. I walked right up to the principal and gave her a smile. Kids paused to see what would happen. I waited to see what she would say. We’d had this conversation all year. She would point out the rule I ‘broke’ and I would prove how I didn’t. She sighed. Principal- Fine, but if even one teacher says you’re distracting to the class, you change clothes. We shook on it. Only thing I had to ditch was most of the bangles. They kept clanging while I wrote. In the end, I ended up getting the dress code rewritten and amended and the principal implemented a new procedure where dress code violations were not sent home, they were noted and students had to wear a piece of duct tape indicating the specific violation. (If you forgot a belt, you put a piece of tape on a belt loop.) Kids only started to get in trouble after three dress code violations in the same week. Since she lightened up on the dress code and how harshly it was punished, she stopped having trouble with kids breaking it all the time. It worked out for everyone. Edit because everyone keeps asking for photos. I am going to look, but this was several years ago (I’m done with college now) and besides the fact we didn’t take a lot of photos because this wasn’t exactly an odd thing for me to do, we’ve also had several hurricanes and floods that ruined most of my childhood ‘evidence’. (If photos proved my life, I was born at 18.) submitted by /u/TandyAngie to r/MaliciousCompliance [link] [comments]

A question about rubber bands...
How do y’all use them without ripping your hair out at the roots? My daughter & I have fine, dense, 3c/4a hair & I’d love to mimic all of the hairstyles i see online but i’m terrified of rubber bands. Do you oil/condition them before use? Apply grease at the root as a protectant? Tell me your secrets please! submitted by /u/worrybethdenberg to r/Naturalhair [link] [comments]
