Sewing in hotel rooms: how do you handle noise, setup, and pressing?
I travel for work a lot (based in NYC) and I keep thinking I could use hotel downtime to sew instead of doomscrolling. I am not trying to run a business, just hobby sewing. The issue is I can't find a realistic setup that does not bother neighbors or feel like a huge hassle. I have a small basic machine I can bring and I don't mind hand sewing, but pressing is the main blocker. Most hotels have an iron but no board, and the provided surfaces are tiny or wobbly. I also worry about machine noise late at night and I really do not want to be that person. For folks who sew while traveling or live in tiny apartments, what practical tips have worked for you? Specific questions: 1) What projects are actually worth doing in a hotel room? Repairs, small bags, simple garments, pattern tracing, cutting only, or something else? 2) Any tricks for pressing seams when you do not have a proper board? Pressing cloths, a towel on the desk, a mini pressing mat, using the iron on low heat, or other setups? 3) How do you manage machine vibration and noise on a cheap hotel desk? Any padding, feet, stitch adjustments, or positioning tricks? 4) What are your travel kit must-haves to keep things safe and tidy? Any tool sizes or storage ideas that save space and hassle? I'm happy to do prep work at home and leave final assembly for later, but I would love a small routine that actually feels productive. Appreciate any advice or lessons you learned the hard way. submitted by /u/BugInside3797 to r/sewing [link] [comments]

AITJ for refusing to go along with a friend group's "tradition" where one person always gets the worst deal because it's easier for everyone else?
I have a friend group of six people and for the past couple of years we've had this really stupid pattern anytime we plan something together. If there is one annoying inconvenience nobody wants, it somehow ends up becoming one person's problem because it's "not a huge deal" and "someone has to do it." Things like taking the worst sleeping spot on trips, being the one to drive the longest route, making the extra store run, getting stuck with the pull out couch, or being the one who gets dropped off last even if it adds forty minutes. It is never officially assigned, but it always becomes this social thing where everybody looks around, jokes a little, and then the person who pushes back the least gets it. For a while that was usually me. I am not saying I got bullied every single time, but I definitely got the short end more than everybody else because I tend to be easygoing and I hate dragging the mood down over stuff that seems small in the moment. This came up again last weekend when we were planning a two night cabin stay. There were five actual beds and one awful air mattress that leaks a little and has to go in the living room where people stay up talking. Before I could even say anything, one of my friends laughed and said, "Okay, so OP gets the struggle bed, as tradition." A couple other people laughed too. I said no, actually, I wasn't doing that this time. They thought I was joking at first. Then I said I was serious and that I was tired of this fake tradition where being the most agreeable person means you get handed the worst option. One friend said I was making the vibe weird over "one silly sleeping arrangement." I told her it was not just one sleeping arrangement, it was the fact that everybody acts like fairness matters right up until being fair is slightly inconvenient. After that things got awkward. Someone said I could have brought it up in a nicer way, and another friend said nobody was forcing me, but that kind of proved my point because the whole setup depends on making the person feel rude for saying no. In the end one of the guys took the air mattress after a lot of huffing and the trip still happened, but now two people are saying I made a scene and turned a minor issue into a moral statement. I honestly think I just finally refused to play a role everybody had gotten too comfortable with. TL;DR: My friend group has an unofficial "tradition" where the most easygoing person gets stuck with the worst inconvenience. This time they tried to assign me the terrible sleeping setup on a trip, I refused, and now some of them say I made things awkward over nothing. submitted by /u/Droid7_Trombone to r/AmITheJerk [link] [comments]

Ya know… you guys suck sometimes. [Rant]
I fully expect this to get deleted, but I’m stuck in this snowstorm with nothing else to do so I might as well vent a bit. Early today, I attempted to join in the conversation here on this sub and show off a budget vinyl player I got for $50 at Walmart recently. I mentioned how I’m a casual collector and just needed a new record player and how despite the low price or that it wasn’t exactly hi-if, I enjoy how the built-in speakers sound and that I was very happy with the purchase. All the comment I got made me feel like shit. Calling me a troll for posting something like that. Making me feel like I wasn’t appreciative of the medium for not having something better, and that despite the price I paid I wasted my money. I bought the mini player I bought because I live in a rented room and don’t have space for a large setup nor the money to justify it right now. I only have a small handful of records currently and I’m not necessarily looking for the best way to listen, just something to play the damn discs. But instead of finding people interested in what I found or giving me ideas or tips on how to continue to grow my interest in vinyl, I get calls a troll or a fake collector simply because I don’t have the resources or the room for a belt driven turntable or large hi-fi speakers. I deleted the earlier post because I don’t want to deal with negativity like that for simply trying to join in somewhere. Only reason I’m posting this is to just remind people that everyone has a starting point in a collection hobby and this was mine, and you all made it feel like it’s not worth it and it would be easier to save my money and just pay for $12 a month for Spotify or whatever it costs now. I’m not saying you can’t be critical or call people out when necessary, but what you say on here does affect how people perceive the community they want to join, and today, my perception is that a good portion of people here thing that if you don’t have a $500+ turntable and sound system, you’re not worthy to collect vinyl. That’s bullshit and you all know that. I like to think that in this world of dying physical media, the more people looking to be collectors in something like vinyl the better, even if all they have to play them on is a $50 turntable with built in speakers that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker I can listen to podcasts on. It might not be great, but it works. And that’s all I need it for. Rant over. I’m gonna take my no-name record player and listen to my vinyl of Tom Petty’s Echo album now. Because again, it might not be hi-fi, but it still sounds damn good and that’s all I need. TL;DR: I showed off my budget turntable early and you all called me stupid for it. Don’t do that. We all share the same hobby. Let’s try not to put others down for not having the optimal way of enjoying it. submitted by /u/MrKTE to r/vinyl [link] [comments]

What is your guitar setup/room looking like ?
So I have been playing guitar for a long time. I hit the infamous intermediate plateau and then got discouraged. Coming back into it from time to time. What I did notice is how comfort and practicality affect my will to play guitar. My appartement right now is very small with very Little room for improvement but I am moving soon. Here is a list of Little things i thought were tiresome, and put together, didn’t encourage me to play more : guitars sleeping in their case (not enough room to put them out) chairs with armrests amp too far from my computer and short cabled headphone resulting in a cable madness. If I move my head too much the headphone unplugs and I stop hearing the backing track. (My room really is inconvenient) Ideally I would like the act of picking up a guitar and start playing as easy and comfortable as possible. I am a big plug and play advocate and struggle with self discipline. The less steps and the more comfort the better. I am curious if more people are like me and how did you guys arrange your setup ? submitted by /u/Pousse_m0usse to r/Guitar [link] [comments]

Paying full rent while living with girlfriend and her “service dog” in one small NYC room – losing productivity and sanity. 23m, 23f
I’m really exhausted and need outside perspective. I live in NYC and currently pay 100% of the rent for our place. I share one small room with my girlfriend. She has a dog (she says it’s a service dog) that lives in the same room with us. The problem is that the dog: constantly runs back and forth in the room barks during the day and at night, waking me up while I sleep brings food into the sleeping area has accidents indoors (pooping/peeing in the room) interrupts me while I work I work from home part of the time and also do music and coding. The noise, movement, sleep interruptions, and hygiene issues completely destroy my concentration and recovery. My productivity is going down, which is scary because my work is how I afford the rent in the first place. I’ve tried to explain that: I can’t afford to pay the entire rent alone living with a dog in such a small shared space is overwhelming for me lack of sleep + constant noise is affecting my mental health and work Her response: she says she cannot leave the dog anywhere because it’s a service dog she says she cannot contribute to rent she gets upset when I raise concerns or show frustration, but the situation itself never changes What worries me most is that the constant overstimulation and lack of rest have started causing intrusive aggressive thoughts, which I know are wrong and not who I am. I recognize this as a stress response and a sign that this living situation is unhealthy for everyone involved — including the dog. I actively remove myself from the situation when I feel overwhelmed. I’m not trying to be cruel, and I don’t want conflict — but this setup feels fundamentally unfair and unsustainable. Questions: Is it reasonable to say I can’t continue living like this? Is it fair to expect rent sharing if the dog lives here? Does “service dog” change anything in a shared, single-room living situation? At what point is separating living arrangements the healthiest option? I’d really appreciate honest advice, especially from people familiar with NYC housing or shared living with pets. Only she helps me it with groceries and cleaning(sometimes cooking washing dishes) BTW she also tells me she has PTSD and dog helps her to prevent panic attacks TL;DR: I pay 100% of the rent in NYC while sharing one small room with my girlfriend and her dog (claimed service dog). The dog barks day and night, disrupts my sleep and work, has indoor accidents, and creates constant stress. My productivity and mental health are suffering, and my girlfriend can’t contribute to rent or relocate the dog. I’m asking if it’s reasonable to set boundaries or separate living arrangements. submitted by /u/yourbabedestroyer to r/amiwrong [link] [comments]

Small room 4.1 setup
L/R: 8361 SL/SR: 8330 Sub: 7360a Calibrated using GLM Running through a Denon x3800h. All speaker outputs go through subwoofer for bass management. Basically the Denon was an expensive multichannel preamp but well worth the value. No need for a center channel thanks to coaxial drivers and the extremely forgiving sweet spot. Space was designed around one but I’ve sat two people here, three would be cutting it. Listening position is about 1.7 meters away speakers space equivalently for a perfect equilateral triangle. All walls have DIY acoustic panels with about 60mm of fiberglass stuffed in them with a small air gap. Using the room without the panels, imaging capability is severely hurt and makes these speakers sound worth much less than they are. For any two channel listening I use the WiiM digital coax out connected to the Genelecs. Skipping several steps of A/D conversion, which from my experience makes a marked difference in quality. submitted by /u/pitason36 to r/hometheater [link] [comments]

AITA for giving my daughter $60 a week, but my son nothing?
I (45F) have two kids, 17F and 15M. We moved earlier this year to be closer to my parents as my parents health is declining. My daughter was excited about the move, but my son has struggled to adjust. Due to the move, my job shifted to hybrid, and I needed a work-from-home setup. My bedroom is too small, and the only options were the lounge or one of the kids’ rooms during school hours. I proposed this to them - my son flat-out refused (“no way in hell”), but my daughter offered her room and half-joked about charging me rent for the space. I thought it was fair, as I get a $20/day work-from-home allowance. I agreed to give it to her if she was okay with me setting up a small office in her room. I work from 8:30 to 5:00, and she usually starts homework right after I finish, so it’s worked out well. Now the issue: my son is pissed that his sister is getting $60. I don’t do regular allowances, just canteen money (about $10/week) and other needs as they come up. I told him he had the same opportunity and was now shit out of luck. He got angry and brought up the move, saying he never gets to see his friends. (For the record, I drive them back to visit every two weeks for visits) I told him I understood his feelings but said I wouldn’t tolerate being spoken to like shit. He then started an argument with his sister too - going in on her for being an opportunistic bitch and she called him a whiny little asshole. To cool off, I offered one of them the option to stay at their grandparents for the night - not as a punishment but to break the tension. My son opted to go & while dropping him off, my mom told me I was favoring my daughter and should be paying them equally. My dad disagreed, saying my son had the chance and was shit out of luck. AITA? ETA: The conversation took place over the course of the afternoon, and I didn’t immediately agree to the deal with my daughter. I offered it to my son first, who reiterated “hell no” and “get the fuck out of my room”. I also should mention the reason I have the smallest room is due to the lack of insulation in the ceiling and flooring making it damp, and as we’re heading into winter I wasn’t sending either kid in there. The room also fits a single bed, and a set of drawers - with essentially no other space at all. We own the house in Auckland NZ, and I don’t have the spare cash to get it insulated at the moment (or even fit any of my equipment to work from home in there). submitted by /u/Murky_Willingness763 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Summary of my budget friendly setup: Proxmox/TrueNAS/HomeAssistant/Jellyfin/Sonarr/Radarr/Filesharing/etc. all in one small form factor, low power package. Xeon CPU and ECC RAM in a mini-PC-cube!
I initially wrote this for another sub but I was told you guys might also appreciate it: The past few years I had a Lenovo M73 tinyThe past few years I had a Lenovo M73 tiny running as my server/NAS but the reasons for an upgrade were adding up over time: Jellyfin – the iGPU of this old 4th gen i7 does not support most HW transcoding formats NAS – Since my Data was steadily growing I needed more disks and since cloud backups were becoming more and more expensive with growing storage I wanted to keep my data out of the cloud. This requires ECC RAM though which is not supported by most mini-PCs and thin clients Overall – i was a constantly juggling RAM allocation with a max of 16GB and with a growing amount of VMs the age of the CPU started to show badly So I started researching hardware that would fit my needs which was not easy and took me much longer than expected... What I wanted: A server CPU which could handle enough threads, supports ECC RAM for data integrity and has an iGPU that supports most transcoding formats for jellyfin Some way to attach at least 6 SATA drives for TrueNAS A small form factor since I don’t have too much space at my place Low power consumption because power is expensive here Sounds like a unicorn, right? Most NUC sized mini-PCs don’t have server CPUs and don’t support ECC RAM but I found this baby at an unbeatable price... The unicorn Mini-Server-PC-cube: Topside: 1/2 32GB ECC RAM sticks, M.2 6x SATA controller Bottom side second 32 GB RAM stick, NVMe SSD, SATA SSD At first I gotta say I was a bit skeptical but after talking to the seller for a bit I decided to just go for it and I was not disappointed! This little fella has a Xeon 2176M CPU, 64 GB of ECC RAM, 2x Gbit ethernet ports, Wi-Fi (which we won`t need) and 2x M.2 slots. (you also get that machine with better Xeons but as you will see, this one will be enough for most people) The case is machined from aluminum and is much sturdier than expected and even though the space inside that tiny cube is used up very efficiently nothing gets too hot in day to day operation. Since I was skeptical about the ECC capabilities of the mainboard I even bought MemTest86 pro which has error injection capabilities to test ECC RAM and yes, I can confirm, all tests passed and ECC is working as intended. Now what about the storage needs I was talking about? Since we got 2 M.2 slots and I only need one for the Proxmox host install I got a 6-port M.2 SATA controller. According to my research the ASM1166 chipset should work fine for TrueNAS and ZFS which I can confirm. Since we don’t want to have 6 high capacity datacenter HDDs dangling around I got a SATA backplane which does not only store my drives neatly but also has cooling and easy hotplug capabilities with each drive sitting in its own quick access tray. SATA backplane Yesss, these 2 form a perfect micro server-tower Now you might say, the CPU is not the latest and greatest and while there are better CPUs available to order with this mini-PC I want to show you what mine is doing. Proxmox host: TrueNAS VM with PCIe passthrough SATA controller Home Assistant VM (5 year old setup with around 150 devices) Jellyfin LXC with iGPU passthrough (capable of providing multiple 4k streams or countless 1080p) openWRT LXC (does all the routing and provides policy based routing to route filesharing over VPN) Jellyseer LXC Sonarr LXC Whisparr LXC Radarr LXC qBittorrent LXC Usenet client LXC Heimdall LXC Full featured Win11 VM with 16GB RAM (my new work PC so I can remote desktop in there from everywhere and continue where I left) And this is the resulting hardware utilization with all 24/7 VMs and one 4k video stream running (keep in mind the windows VM is using 16 GB of RAM), so I`d say the system is future proof enough: Utilization at typical 24/7 load and 1 4K Jellyfin-Stream Since my data is of critical importance to me I demoted my previous server to offsite backup which is running Proxmox, a TrueNAS VM for nightly NAS replication, ProxmoxBackupServer for VM backups and another openWRT container which holds the wireguard tunnel to my home and does all of the routing. If people are interested I can explain this setup in more detail in another post. Hardware summary: [Moved to comments] screw this! It took me a lot of time to write this and I dont get anything in return for it. When I try to post links for the stuff so people can find it either the comment or the whole post gets removed because mods are too lazy to mod. https:// !!! www. !!! aliexpress .com/item !!! /1005006369887180.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.3de11802b3gUnu Delete the post or not, I dont care... To this I want to add that the only thing I would do differently now is that I would maybe get a M.2 – SAS controller instead of a SATA controller and a SAS backplane. When buying used datacenter HDDs there are a lot more SAS drives around and the prices tend to be better. Even though we literally have no power outages I still plan on adding a UPS at a later point and I sadly forgot to hook up my power meter at the last system reboot but I will add real life power consumption data later. I`d guess it is at around 50-60 W without the storage. Conclusion: Is this the perfect high availability data center? Ofc it is not but if you are on a budget or you simply dont have enough space for a large server tower and want awesome power efficiency this is the perfect setup imho. It is running everything I could wish for atm and still has room for much more so I am happy with it. [Power use data following tomorrow] submitted by /u/_dakazze_ to r/homelab [link] [comments]

26m need tips for my small apt living room, what do I need to change.
I’m not the biggest fan of my furniture, most of it was given to me for free or built by me when I got my place a few years ago. Thinking about getting a sectional or some other seating setup. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I hate the dingy apartment carpet so much. submitted by /u/oAloha to r/malelivingspace [link] [comments]

Latest edition of my setup. Small screen is my laptop. Not many middle of the room setups on here, but I really prefer it. Plus I had floor outlets so no wires running across the floor which is nice.

It's kind of a jank setup (my room is very small) but I am proud to say I am now a PC gamer!
