No-Neutral smart switch with Doppler Radar & MQTT that started as a uni passion project, and turned into a startup. After your feedback on our OLED version, we’re launching Tap One globally today.
Hey r/homeassistant, A few weeks ago, I shared a uni project that I had turned into startup, a UK-made OLED switch with 9 sensors and 3 lighting channels. The feedback was clear: the tech was cool and the display was beautiful but it was too expensive for a whole-home rollout and people wanted a simpler version for bedrooms and hallways. To quickly re-introduce myself, my name is Rowan and I am a designer and engineer. I previously worked in Microsoft product R&D, and before that I studied Design Engineering at Imperial College London. Today we’re launching Tap One on Kickstarter. This version still has the same beautiful design, the core sensors and 3-gang dimming capability. The Specs: Local Connectivity: Works natively with Home Assistant The Sensor Suite: We kept the Doppler Radar (not PIR!) for motion/presence, plus Temperature, Humidity, Air Pressure, and Ambient Light. It’s basically 5 ESPhome-style sensors in a single wall switch. Hardware: MOSFET-based dimming (completely silent, no mechanical relays) and works on No-Neutral circuits (110V - 240V). Form Factor: Slim enough for 25mm UK/EU backboxes and standard US single-gang boxes. We are a small team doing full-stack engineering and manufacturing in the UK. We’ve moved from a high-res OLED that was in Tap to a capacitive glass interface with a customisable LED light bar to bring the cost down significantly for "everywhere" deployment. I'm happy to dive into the weeds on any questions you may have! AMA! Smart Switches
Two questions, 1) What is the best brand for smart switches? I've got one and it needs replaced as it constantly disconnects from wifi now and the only way to get the wifi portion working is to turn the breaker off then back on. 2) My kitchen light has two switches on it and I'm looking up what I need to do to get it put on smart switches. Suggestions? submitted by /u/SongRealistic2723 to r/homeautomation [link] [comments]

How to install a smart switch without neutral wire
I basically want to be able to control the lights with alexa and I can't jsut install a smart light bulb because I live with my grandparents and they don't know much about domotic, so they basically turn off the light using the switch, instead of alexa (There's a smart bulb already installed), so I researched and I need a smart light switch (So I can use both alexa and the physicall switch), but the thing is that my house is pretty old (I don't have a "neutral") and also the wiring wasn't done properly, so how do I install the switch without wiring anything new. Disclaimer: I'm not mixing neutral with live, it's just that the wiring wasn't properly done, I have already tested it, also when I remove the bulb, both wires at the light switch give me 0 volts (Using multimeter) which means the light bulb is acting as a bridge for the live to get to the light switch. Also, "neutral-less" smart switches are pretty rare in my country, so if someone knows how to bypass the neutral requirement, I'd be grateful submitted by /u/Klutzy-Cup9058 to r/smarthome [link] [comments]

Smart lights or just smart switch?
I'm replacing some recessed ceiling lights in my kitchen, and I was wondering if someone can recommend going with something like Hue ceiling lights (I already have a bunch of Hue bulbs with Google Home), or just using standard downlights and a smart switch, like an Eve perhaps? The simple lights are much cheaper, but going with them would limit the type of light/colour options I have. The Hue is cool, but maybe 4x the price overall? Anyone else been in similar situations? If so, which way did you go? submitted by /u/Appropriate_Guess614 to r/HomeKit [link] [comments]

Best smart light switch option when house is full of dumb switches
I want to replace switches in my in-laws house for them. They have a recently built home (so it has neutral wires) but it’s kitted out with regular dumb switches. A lot of them are 3-way switches. I got them an echo show previously so I need switched that are compatible with Alexa. Ideally I don’t want to replace every switch where it’s a 3-way if there is a way to just replace one switch and leave the dumb switch at the other location, it would be quite costly having to replace every 3 way with a pair of switched. Is that possible or do they all require an add-on? If it is possible do I then have to go and figure out which is the primary or will the switch work on either? I also want to avoid buying any additional hubs, so lights that will just work with Alexa directly preferred. What is the best way to achieve this in the most straightforward way? Edit: As they have a ton of can LED lights in the main living room and basement living area replacing all of these bulbs isn’t really a feasible/viable option. So smart switches is the preferred route. submitted by /u/axwell80 to r/smarthome [link] [comments]

Hi Reddit I need your help with a Smart Switch - Elijah
EDIT: I should have had this first, thank you everyone, but It also needs to work with NO NEUTRAL Wire :) TLDR: Linus is making me make Smash Champs smart and I need to know if this product exists.... The Switches at Smash Champs for the court lights are 1500W of LED Lights. Is there a smart switch of SOME SORT that can work with Z-Wave/Zigbee/2.4 Ghz. Can't be dimmer needs to just be an on off Switch. I thought something like these would work since they say "Max Power 2400W@240V" but my understanding reading those specs is that wouldn't be for LED lights, rather something like a kettle or heater. IF I'M WRONG IM SORRY DONT BREAK MY KNEES. If it straight up doesn't exist cool, what's an alternative? Thanks guys, I promise I am also trying to look into this myself but I'm a busy lad and already melted one switch so I just need some help :) submitted by /u/BocaBola_ to r/LinusTechTips [link] [comments]

Smart home gadgets are a downgrade from a $1 light switch
If your home stops working when the Wi‑Fi hiccups, it isn’t “smart.” I like tech. I work in it, I’ve set up the bulbs, routines, voice assistants, the whole ecosystem. After a couple of years living with it, I’m convinced that for most people, “smart home” is a step backward in reliability, usability, and sanity compared to a dumb switch on the wall. A light switch has near-100% uptime, zero learning curve, and works for guests, kids, and grandparents. A “smart” setup adds latency and friction; you open an app, wait for a handshake, repeat a command, and hope the scene runs. It introduces extra points of failure like cloud outages, vendor sunsets, firmware bugs, and orphaned products. It creates maintenance chores, from re-pairing devices and replacing coin batteries in sensors to debugging automations after an update. It can be hostile to guests; the lamp won’t turn on because the physical switch was flipped “wrong,” or the only control exists on your phone. It also brings lock-in and privacy costs, including data slurping and subscriptions for features that used to be free. There are legitimate use cases. Accessibility needs, leak and CO2 sensors, a smart thermostat with sane local control, timed bathroom fans, and perhaps occupancy sensors in closets or hallways can be genuinely helpful. But most of what’s marketed as “smart” solves problems that a one-dollar hardwired switch, a mechanical timer, or a pull chain already solved permanently. No one talks about resale or longevity either. In seven to ten years, a normal switch still works. Will your cloud-reliant light ecosystem, proprietary hub, and that third app with the purple icon still exist? Or will the next homeowner inherit a house that can’t turn on a light because the company folded? For the usual replies: This isn’t anti‑accessibility. If voice or automation lets you live more independently, it’s a game‑changer. I’m talking about the average, able user replacing dependable controls with fragile ones. It’s also not “no automation ever.” I’m against “everything must be smart.” If it can’t be operated instantly, locally, and manually in the dark by a guest, it’s a downgrade. submitted by /u/Gold_Palpitation8982 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

What are your highest ROI Home Assistant devices? Which sensor/switch/plug/device do you feel provides the greatest value in your smart home?
I was reading /u/Neat-Intiative-6965's recent thread "Give me your most invisible automations" and it got me thinking about the idea of highest ROI devices. We all have smart home gear that's more "wow that's neat" than "wow that's so useful." What I'd love to hear about are the things you've added to your Home Assistant system that have provided a huge ROI in terms of usefulness and user satisfaction. For example, someone might say... they frequently forgot to take the trash out but then they epoxied a $10 vibration sensor on their garbage can lid and now Home Assistant bugs them the night before trash day if the can hasn't been rolled out to the street. Or maybe somebody bought a smart switch and wrote a little routine to automatically turn the basement lights off based on motion or time so they don't have to argue with their kids anymore about remembering the turn the basement lights. That kind of stuff. So what do you consider your highest ROI HA investment? submitted by /u/ReverendDizzle to r/homeassistant [link] [comments]

Wiring smart 3 gang switch
I know that I should employ a licensed electrician to do this job for me, but was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me out. I've just purchased a 3 gang smart switch and am now confused looking at the different colours and extra wire. My understanding is that from the mains blue is going to be connected to "A" and white to "N". On switch one the red wire currently connected with the blue on the old switch will go into "A1" The red on the second and third of the old switch will go into "A2" and "A3" Where does the red wire from the mains that is connected to the first old switch in the common go to? Do I cap it with the red that is connected to the common on the last switch? Pls help. I think I'm way over my head on this!! submitted by /u/imudaman to r/diynz [link] [comments]
